Ramon Cortez of Hondo was in the Army from 1942 to 1946. Drafted, he received his training near Riverside, CA, then on to Camp White, Oregon, in the Agate Desert, which had the misfortune to be referred to as the Alcatraz of boot camps, then trained at Camp McCoy for combat tactics. Finally he was sent to Camp Lee, Virginia, near Richmond. In Camp Lee, he was one of many prison guards for 12,000 German prisoners of war. It was there that Ramon picked up quite a bit of the German language, which he can still recall to mind. He spouted off a joke, half in German, half in English, one half of which I did not understand! Many of the German prisoners became U S citizens after the war because of the good care they were given, as opposed to POWs in other countries. According to the Associated Press, the

His personal awards include the prestigious Defense Meritorious Service Medal, The Air Medal (two Strike/two Individual Action), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards) and various unit and campaign awards. Members of the U. S. Navy including fellow Master Chiefs attended the ceremony along with Master Chief Bond’s parents, Ralph and Monica Bond and siblings from Emporia, Kansas, his in-laws, Art and Penny Maguire of Leakey, TX. and many friends. A reception was held at the Chief’s Club. Scott is currently residing in Pensacola with his wife and their 6 year old son, Maguire (aka Mack).

German and Italian POW camps are an “all but forgotten part of history.” He went on the G I bill to school for a while and was on a milk delivery route. His brother-in-law taught him about electrical work and under his teaching, Ramon became an electrician. His company was Cortez Electric, located in Hondo. Most of his work involved new homes, building the middle loop on poles and electricity to houses. He retired because of his age, which made it unsafe for him to use ladders any longer. On August 31, he will celebrate his 91st birthday.
