LEAKEY ISD APPROVES COST OF LIVING INCREASE ............................ Page 4

In an effort to promote child safety, the Texas Department of Health Services, Methodist Healthcare Ministries and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension hosted a Summer Safety Seminar June 25 at Lindberg Park. The goal of the Summer Safety Seminar was to promote the health and wellbeing of the community by educating the children, parents, and grandparents in order to help reduce the risk of dangerous situations that may arise not only through the summer but throughout the year. The children had a great time learning about safety. Lesa Parry, Wesley Nurse with the Methodist Healthcare Ministries presented bicycle helmet safety by playing with the Egg Head. Smashing eggs to illustrate the need for bicycle helmets is always fun! 35 bicycle helmets were fitted and given to the children at the fair. The also learned about internet safety from the Camp Wood Library ladies, fire safety from Josh Cox of the Nueces Canyon Fire Department, how to dial and communicate with 911, water safety from Clint Graham with the Texas Parks and Wildlife, and Chris Sheridan from the Real County Sheriff’s Department spoke to

the children about the dangers of drug usage. To finish up the morning there were door prizes and hot dogs for lunch. We have many people to thank for the successful safety seminar! First – thanks go to the parents and grandparents that brought all the children to the park. We would like to also thank the exhibitors for their great participation. Presentations were provided by Texas Parks and Wildlife, Real County Sheriff’s office, Nueces Canyon Fire Department, Camp Wood Library, Methodist Healthcare Ministries, Department of Homeland Security, Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas Department of State Health Services, and Texas Department of Family Services. In addition a huge thank you to the sponsors of this event. Participating sponsors were First State Bank of Uvalde, City of Camp Wood (Mayor, City Council and City Staff), Bealls, Dairy Queen, Rudy’s, Applebee’s, Wal-Mart, HEB, Nueces Country Smokehouse, and Medina Electric Co-op. We look forward to seeing many more of you next year!! Real County Deputy Sheriff Chris Sheridan pictured with drug dog Oso.

Water News and River Flows River flows were taken on the Frio River on July 22nd and Nueces River on July 23rd with most of the flows down from last the measurement. A simple reminder if you are at your favorite swimming hole and it is around a culvert and you notice blockage, do not try to clear the blockage; it could be dangerous. Now the other side of that coin; I know we all like a good deep hole to relax in, but do not move rocks into the culverts and block them as this causes many problems when we get a rise in the river. Fulgham’s Crossing just south of the Alto Frio Baptist Encampment had a flow of 10,777 gpm (gallons per minute) last measurement and now has a flow of 10,623 gpm. This is less than a 2% drop in the flow during one of the “hottest”

By Elaine Padgett Carnegie This week AP has had the best coverage of all the issues and so I have taken all updates from them. Conservatives slammed Speaker Boehner plan for $1.5 billion to address the illegal immigration crisis on Wednesday, June 23rd. months of our summer. This site looks “OK” for now but one of the culverts has a lot of debris in it; the three culverts on the Rio Frio end have quite flowing again. The Leakey Springs Crossing had a flow of 4,247 gpm last measurement and a flow of 4,147 gpm this reading (which is about a 3% reduction of flow); this crossing seems to have this fluctuation quite regularly it is hard for me to see any change as it always looks the same. The Mill Creek Crossing surprised me this measurement; it is flowing about 15% higher than the last measurement, there are once again culverts on the south end of this crossing that have no flow reading, this crossing has a flow of 5,721 gpm this measurement up from the flow last measurement of 4,975 gpm. continued on page 3

Barack Obama to rescind the 2012 executive order that they say ignited the crisis. “This is a problem created by the DACA law,” said Louisiana Rep. John Fleming. “The president did it by himself.” Fleming referred to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which delayed deportations to children who were brought to the U.S. by their parents when they were young and who have remained here illegally. “It’s a huge PR disaster for him — and he can fix it by simply reversing what he did and by telling people that he is

Ventura Hernandez Rodriguez, known to all as Bennie, was an amusement operator in Castroville, Eagle Pass, Hondo, and San Antonio while in school. He was 18 years old when his country called him. On December 7, 1944, he reported to Fort Hood to get his basic training for Army infantry. At Fort Mead, Maryland, he was issued heavy equipment and clothing for winter, ready to go to Germany as special services. Before he could be shipped out, VE Day occurred. He was then issued mosquito nets and light gear and was sent to Camp Stoneman, California, for two weeks. He was put on a ship, one man among 5,000 men. In 28 days,16 ships with 5,000 men on each and protected by 4 destroyers, went to Manila. Attached to the 123 infantry division, they searched at night, men in a close line, looking for mines. They went to Baggio, Japan, then Luzon in the Philippines. On August 6, Hiroshima was bombed; August 8 Nagasaki was bombed; Japan surrendered on the 15th. From there, special services men were ordered to pick up weapons, bayonetts, rifles, and other arms to be confiscated. After that was accomplished, he was assigned to the 42nd General Hospital as a guard. At that time, he became a tourist off hours, visiting all the large cities in Japan. In November, he was sent to

Jenny Beth Martin, co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots, declared: “No border bailout, period.” “The first thing that needs to happen is for the president to stop sending signals to the rest of the world that if you get on our soil, you’ll be able to stay on our soil,” she said. “It doesn’t cost any money to do that. What the president’s asking for is a blank check,” Boehner said. “Without trying to fix the problem, I don’t know how we actually are in position to give the president any more money.” “While we can always use more money for border security, we have a president who doesn’t allow the border to be secure,” the three-term congressman said. “I’m very skeptical that any of the money would be spent on any improvement in border security in long

Rick Perry announced the deployment of up to 1,000 armed National Guard troops to the Mexican border, he was speaking to voters in Iowa as much as Texas. His worry is the arrival of more than 57,000 child immigrants. continued page 2
