IF YOU MISSED IT, YOU MISSED THE SHOW!! The REAL COUNTY JUNIOR HORSE CLUB RODEO
by Julie Becker photos by Jeff Lavender
This past weekend rocked! The Real County Junior Horse Club put on an awesome Rodeo. Lester Meier Rodeo Stock Contractor brought great stock and the cowboys followed. Jody and Shannon Sutherland lead the work crew and put on one of the best rodeos I have ever seen. Denise did a great job keeping the books. The crew from the Real County Junior Horse club was lead by none other than Helen Hubbard. Helen has been running the rodeo so long she can do it with her eyes closed. Her husband L.V. Hubbard was chief cook, and man can he cook. The burgers were awesome and no one can pass up a good burger. Thanks go out to all the gate workers, Miss Frio River and Frio River Princess for selling programs, and all the concession workers. Slack on Friday night lasted into the wee hours but all went well. Milton Woolf was running movie theaters in Del Rio when he was called up in 1944. He got his physical, trained another man how to do his job for a few months, then was sent to San Diego in March, 1944. Because of his experience running movies, he was designated to be an electrician, first job was to repair a pump that was 3 foot under water. After going through boot camp getting shots, blood tests, he then was sent to Coronado Island where he learned how to run landing boats. Then he was sent to North Island, slept on the deck of his ship, and was sent to Pearl Harbour for two weeks. He was sent to Kauai to Barking Sand Air Base on Kauai. He was assigned to the Navy Amphibious Squad, nicknamed the suicide squad. His training was done with an LCMS 2 landing boat that would hold 50 men. He landed many men on islands all over the Pacific. He received his discharge at Ft. Wallace, Texas. He then went to Del Rio, visiting with family for several months. When Garner Field was abandoned by the government, a tri-county college was started. With the G I Bill, Woolf was in the first class at SWTJC. He took preengineering classes. He skipped a year to start his own electrical business, which is still in operation today. In 1948-49 he went back to school to complete his degree. His business did electrical work for schools, churches, gas stations, and ranches from Edwards County through Zavala County. He sold appliances, did air conditioning as well. Because of his health, his son-in-law took over the air conditioning part of
the business and his son takes care of the electrical part. However, he is on the job, taking messages and phone calls for his son.

COULDN’T PASS THIS PICTURE UP!
This picture was sent in by reader David Searcy. This is what the hail storm a couple of weeks ago looked like from the Alto Frio Baptist Encampment. This is an amazing photo of what was brewing up. Searcy said he has home in Leakey on the Frio and enjoys his time here. Searcy said “On June 12, I had just driven through all the lightening show on my way toward Concan from San Antonio. There was a line of cars heading back to Sabinal faster than I was heading west. And I was the only one going in that direction! My surprise was when I arrived in Concan and saw the emergency vehicles behind Andy’s and blocking River Road. I figured it was either a tornado or high winds with lots of hail by the amount of leaves and debris on 83 as I headed north to Leakey. The bolts of lightening were something I had not seen since I was traveling in Alabama during those bad tornado storms in 2011. I didn’t sustain any building damage but my neighbors and I lost plenty of limbs from the cypress along the river. Thanks to Mr. Searcy for taking the time to send in the picture!
or asphalt. The project will start at the intersection of Ranch Road 336 and Hwy. 83, at the Texas Department of Transportation office. The project will cover the roadway of Hwy. 83 to the intersection of Ranch Road 337 in the first phase and continue from Ranch Road 337 to Ranch Road 1120 to complete the second phase. Threlkeld said one half mile of Ranch Road 337 West will also be paved. She also said TxDot will hold a public meeting in Leakey this fall to discuss the project with the community. Projects such as this one have been completed in sister cities throughout

our area. Sabinal underwent months of road construction to their main thoroughfare and the outcome had mixed reviews. Upon first glance the improvements are astounding, but with further usage of the roadway, problems arose with the curbs that jet out into the roadway. Sabinal citizens complain they are dangerous. Leakey will have to endure the headache of road construction but in the end the new roadway will most certainly be worth the wait. Be patient when the construction starts, which Threlkeld said will be in the spring of 2015.
