FRIO CANYON CHAMBER POISED TO PURCHASE RODEO ARENA by Julie Becker

The Frio Canyon Chamber of Commerce has recently entered into a contract to purchase the Leakey Rodeo Arena. The sale is contingent upon the sale of the current Chamber office building located on Hwy. 83 in downtown Leakey. Chamber members voted at the April meeting to purchase the arena and sell the current building. Chamber member and former longtime Chamber Treasurer, Glenn Bradley spearheaded the drive to purchase the arena. Bradley said “This is a good move for the Chamber; it will move the Chamber forward in truly promoting the local businesses.” He went on to say “Though it will be some time before events

can be held there, the possibilities are endless to promote tourism in the Frio Canyon.” The Chamber website states “Our goal is to promote support to our community and to make the public aware of the beautiful Frio River and Texas Hill Country. In turn, this will help enhance the area as a whole and improve the quality of life in this area.” Chamber members strive to utilize the cooperation of members to move the economy of our a canyon forward. The purchase and sale transaction of the two properties is scheduled to close at the end of July. Look for great things in the future from the Frio Canyon Chamber of Commerce!

The Spirit of ‘45 Everesto “Everett” Torres of Hondo, enlisted in the service right out of high school at Lackland Air Force Base. He was trained as a radio operator in Billoxi, Mississippi, to do international Morse Code. At first, he did not like doing the job he was trained to do, but he got used to it and it was alright, he said. He also did voice mail and teletype, the cutting edge of technology of that day. First place he was sent to was Okinawa, where he stayed for 18 months. His off-island site was Sweetwater, Texas. He was a radio operator there for about a year. Other places he served in the service were Korea and Guam. He had no complaints about his service time, and no

regrets. However, he decided not to re-enlist. He was discharged in Seattle, Washington. When he was discharged, he came home to Hondo and started painting, homes, businesses, whatever was needed. He painted inside and outside, floating and taping, using a brush and roller, even using a spray gun, all that was needed to get the job done. In 1977, tired of the fumes, he retired. Still if something came up, he would tape and float if need be. He still maintains his home in Hondo. He has four sisters, the closest one living in San Antonio. Of his immediate family, he has four sons and one daughter, all still working.

River flows were taken on the Frio River on June 23rd and Nueces River on June 24th with all of the flows down slightly from the first of the month. The crossings are all looking cleaner, thanks to the recent rainfall, however, there is still a lot of debris in front of and inside many culverts. This is a great problem to have. A simple reminder if you are at your favorite swimming hole and it is around a culvert and you notice blockage, do not try to clear the blockage; it could be dangerous. Now the other side of that coin; I know we all like a good deep hole to relax in, but do

not move rocks into the culverts and block them as this causes many problems when we get a rise in the river. Fulgham’s Crossing just south of the Alto Frio Baptist Encampment had a flow of 18,357 gpm (gallons per minute) last measurement and now has a flow of 12,648 gpm. This site looks cleaner than it has in months but the three culverts on the Rio Frio end have quite flowing again. The Leakey Springs Crossing had a flow of 5,022 gpm last measurement and a flow of 4,375 gpm this reading; continued page 4
