DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION UVALDE DE LAS ENCINAS CHAPTER WINS NATIONAL AWARDS Regent Betty Lawrence received notification that the Uvalde de las Encinas Chapter has won three National Awards in the Commemorative Events Category to be presented by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution at the Continental Congress in Washington, D.C. in June 2016. The awards are as follows: First Place for the Best Vietnam War Display, Third Place in the Best Multi-Events honoring Vietnam Veterans, and a Special Award for the United States of American Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War to Betty Lawrence for the chapter being the State Winner of the Texas DAR Commemorative Events Category. This chapter previously won several awards at the state level. They were as follows: State Winner for Commemorative Events, Excellence in Documentation of Chapter Service for Veterans Activities, Outstanding Commemorative or Promotional Event for Vietnam War 50th Commemoration – Public Relations and Media, First Place for Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Traveling Display, First Place in Excellence in Honoring the Largest Number of Vietnam Veterans – 587, Excellence in Support of Veterans’ Day Program at the Uvalde County Fairplex, and member Billie Franklin for Outstanding Accomplishment of Recognizing 587 Vietnam Veterans. The Uvalde de las Encinas Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Display was presented in the El Progreso Memorial Library during the month of July, 2015. The Display consisted of Vietnam History and background as well as a list of area Vietnam War Veterans as complied by member Billie Franklin. Also three Vietnam War restored jeeps and replica ammunition and artillery loaned by Vietnam War Veterans were on display in the lobby. After July, the display minus the jeeps and artillery traveled among area towns to be shared with veterans and their families. The traveling display appeared in Brackettville, Camp Wood, Carrizo Springs, Crystal City, Del Rio, Leakey, Pearsall, Sabinal, and Utopia. The Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Display appeared at the Veterans’ Day Program at the Uvalde Fairplex on November 11, 2015. The chapter members registered each veteran and presented them with a goody bag. The chapter awarded

each Vietnam War Veteran in attendance a certificate in appreciation for their service, and presented the Vietnam War Commemorative Flag at the assembly. The Uvalde de las Encinas Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution has been designated as a Commemorative Partner by the United States Department of Defense Office of Commemorations to assist this nation in properly thanking and honoring our Vietnam Veterans and their families. The chapter’s goal is to thank and honor all Veterans of the Vietnam War Era regardless of location, living or deceased, including personnel who were held as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action, for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States and to thank and honor the families of those veterans. Editor’s Note: 587 veterans, the miles, the hours, the days, the typed words, all of this you can not put a price on, but Billie Franklin gave them freely to assure their stories were not lost. We are very proud of her!!
