Last year the Frio Canyon Chamber of Commerce stepped up to the plate and purchased the Leakey arena so our community could continue to use it for local events. To further support the community the Chamber gave the Real County Junior Horse Club a ten year lease for their Thursday night playdays and the July Jubilee Rodeo! Wow talk about coming together for the betterment of the community! The Real County Junior Horse Club became an official organization “to further the participation of youth in activities on horseback, and related activities” in 1975. . Thousands of hours of labor were donated by men and women of the horse club. The first rodeo performance was a Saturday daytime performance in honor of our country’s Bi-Centennial Celebration and they have

been going strong ever since. Pictured are last years awards! Take a look at those saddles! Looking forward to a great year this year! The Spirit of ‘45 “Bill”, William Edwin Chamberlin, was born on Saint Patrick’s Day, 1920, in East Concord, New Hampshire. He was the first son born to Harold Curtis and Ruth Marion (Bachelder) Chamberlin. His birth was preceded by an older sister. The family had two daughters and four sons in all. He was a member of the graduating class of Concord High School, graduating in June, 1936. He liked to party and stay out late, had a motorcycle which he wrecked. From that wreck, he suffered skull damage and had to have a metal plate put in his head. He lost his driver’s license permanently in the state of New Hampshire due to his folly. He was working at a hotel in Concord, but when World War II broke out, he joined the Army. He got his basic training at Camp Lee, Virginia, where he met his future wife, Dovie Maddalean Boultinghouse of Utopia, Texas. She was in the W.A.A.C.’s at the time. They were married September 11, 1943, in Uvalde, Texas. The result of that union was three children. They presently have 4 grandchildren, 12 greatgrandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Bill served in the Army Engineering Corp in

the Pacific, was in the battles of the Bismarck Archipeago, New Guinea, Southern Philippines, Luzon, and the Battle of 60 33 WD 45. He received an honorable discharge from the Separation Center at Fort Sam Houston on October 5, 1945. Medals awarded to him were the Asiatic Pacific Campaign with 4 bronze stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal with 1 bronze star, and the Good Conduct Medal. His mess kit that he carried was etched by him with all the places he was during the war and can be seen at the Aviation Museum on Garner Field Road in Uvalde. Since he had lost his driver’s license in New Hampshire and was married to a Texas girl, there was no doubt about where they would live. Because the hiring of veterans was foremost following World War II and with his background in the service in engineering, he was hired in November, 1945, at the Texas Highway Department in Uvalde. He worked many of those years in Edwards, Real, Uvalde, and Zavala Counties. He was hired as an apprentice inspector and his first job was on the overpass in North Uvalde. continued page 3
