The Frio Canyon Chamber of Commerce held a fund raiser Memorial Day Weekend to benefit the local American Legion Post 489. The Chamber would like to thank the Event Committee, the Chamber Volunteers, Miss Frio River and Princess, Local Boy Scout Troops and their Leaders, Hondo National Bank and American Legion Post 489; and we want to especially

thank the Community for turning out and contributing. We are pleased to announce that the Chamber is able to present a check in the amount of $900.00 to American Legion Post 489. Frio Canyon Parks Association Dedicates Katherine (Kitty) Harrison Pavilion The Frio Canyon Parks Association will be dedicating the new Outdoor Pavilion on Saturday June 14th at 10 a.m. The Pavilion will be called the Katherine (Kitty) Harrison Pavilion in honor of the lady who did so much for the community as well as the park. Everyone in the community is invited to attend. The Frio Canyon Park was established in 2001. The property was donated by the City of Leakey for the building of a community park. A group of volunteers wrote to the L.C.R.A., Lower Colorado River Authority/Bandera Electric Cooperative for a grant to build the park with a walking trail, playground, picnic area, soccer field, and a Little League and Softball field. It was important for the children to have a ball field in Leakey instead of driving to Utopia for practice and games. It took a lot of work to clear the area of wire and other building trash and to completely renovate the old laundromat into a Park Building. It also

took generosity from many of the community members and businesses to establish this park in Leakey. The park is NOT funded by the City of Leakey or Real County. All the funding to build and keep the park in good running condition, add new amenities, repairs and cleaning is done by the help of volunteers and donations from the citizens of Frio Canyon. The trees were all donated as well as the flower garden, benches and picnic tables, chairs, tables, the cement block concession stand and toilets, the flagpole and the announcer’s building. We would like every family in Frio Canyon to become members and help us keep the park beautiful place to play and visit. Dues are only $10 per year per family. MARK YOUR CALENDAR for Saturday, June 14th at 10 a.m. for the Dedication of the new outdoor pavilion. Refreshments will be served.

Real County Commissioners Hear From Local Libraries Real County Commissioners held their regular monthly meeting on Monday June 2, 2014. Mary Forman opened a presentation from the Real County Libraries, both the Leakey and Camp Wood Libraries. Forman told Commissioners there are regulatory changes coming in the next few years that will affect both libraries. Wood Library told Commissioners they have been working more this year with the students from Nueces Canyon ISD and are working on a pre-school program for the library. Eileen Bell, Director of the Real County Library in Leakey told the Commissioners the Leakey Library has ten home school families that utilize the library along with a chess club that meets weekly at the library.
