Kaydie Light, a fifth grade student at Nueces Canyon, along with other outstanding students from across the United States, will take part in an extraordinary leadership development experience, the 2015 Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC): Foundations of Leadership I, an

Envision program. The program provides a historical view of leadership and encourages young scholars to develop their own leadership skills and strategies for success in the 21st century. “The Junior National Young Leaders Conference enables students to recognize their own leadership abilities in the context of great men and women from the past and present,” said Marguerite Regan, Ph.D., the dean of academic affairs for JrNYLC. “They return home with new confidence in their ability to make a positive impact in their school and communities. Washington, D.C., serves as the perfect backdrop for this inspiring program to generate a new generation of U.S. leaders.” At the six-day conference, Kaydie will take part in fun and exciting workshops and participate in simulations to confront the challenges faced by historic leaders from the nation’s past.

Scholars also explore historically significant sites such as Harpers Ferry National Park and the National Mall to explore museums, monuments and memorials dedicated to U.S. founding fathers. JrNYLC also takes students on an in-depth journey to view leadership challenges through the perspective of critical periods in American history: the Civil War Reconstruction, World War II, the Great Depression and the Civil Rights Movement, for example. “The students gain greater sense of themselves, their

roles to preserve American democracy and their responsibilities as tomorrow’s leaders,” Regan said. He went to the Briscoe community school and graduated in 1940. He went into the Army Air Corp, got his basic in the cavalry, rode horses and mules at Fort Bliss, El Paso. From there, he switched to air plane mechanic and went to Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls. For a short time, he was sent to Greenville Air Force Base then on to Kearns Utah AFB where he was processed to go overseas and went to Oahu, Hawaii. His permanent duty station was there, but he was on a combat mapping squadron, mapping fortifications of the Japanese. He was with the 86th Combat Mapping Squadron, which was out of the 43rd, and was there from November 1943 to June 1945, working on B 24’s. his job back with his company, but in Borger, not in Wheeler. He was with Southwest Public Service for 8 months, got married, but was dissatisfied with his job. He went to work at Phillips Petroleum working as an electrician in a synthetic rubber plant, was there 4 months. He decided to reenlist and was made a staff sergeant. He went to Enid, Oklahoma, working on B25’s at the pilot training school for Chinese cadets. Most of them, he recalls, went back to China to enlist in the Communist Army. When Enid was closed, he went to Barksdale Field Shreveport, near Bossier City Louisiana. He was then line chief of B 25’s. Next up was Chanute, Illinois, where there was a mobile training field near Rantoul. There they built mobile training units to be used on other bases. Then he went to Bergstrom Air Force Base at Austin, Texas, where he was on a training unit for C 54’s. When Goodfellow Air Force Base was reopened in San

Angelo, he was moved there and was on the flight line for 9 years, working on planes for basic pilot training, leaving there as a Master Sergeant. Next up was Elmendorf Air Force Base at Anchorage, Alaska. By summer 1958, Congress opened up two new classifications, Senior Master Sergeant and Chief Master Sergeant. He made Senior Master Sergeant by September 1, then by December 1,1958, he was Chief Master Sergeant, the first to make that rank. He went back to Kelly Air Force Base in 1960, and retired from there in 1964. He moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas, bought a farm, and had it 15 years, had 150 head of cattle. He then went back to Wheeler for 4 years, then moved to Rough Canyon on Lake Amistad, Del Rio.

From 1987 to 2001, he travelled in a 5th wheel, then moved to Fort Clark.
