Leakey ISD Board of Trustees Hire New Superintendent continued from front page
He then served as a campus principal at the secondary level in Kermit ISD, Comfort ISD, and Snyder ISD, where he also served as the Director of Human Resources and Operations. Mr. Yeschke is currently Superintendent of Schools in Rocksprings ISD. According to Mr. Reagor, the Leakey Board must wait twenty-one days, after naming Mr Yeschke as its lone finalist, before it may act on an employment contract. Reagor anticipated that the Superintendent’s contract would be an action item at the Tuesday, March 27, 2018 meeting. Mr.
Yeschke plans to begin transitioning into his new role at the end of the current school year. Leakey ISD’s current Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Barbara Skipper, congratulated Mr. Yeschke and pledged her support in the transition. Dr. Skipper describes Mr. Yeschke as “community minded”, having being a long time Lions’ Club member. Dr. Skipper started with a 1-2 year commitment with Leakey ISD and five years later she is winding up her work at Leakey and beginning her own transition back into retirement. Skipper has been
a vital part of building the new school facilities and reaching the goals set five years ago including growing school population to the most it has ever been. She said that “she thanks the Leakey Board for the opportunity to work with the amazing students in Leakey.” “We appreciate her hard work here in Leakey and wish her much success and happiness in her retirement,” commented Reagor. Any questions or comments regarding the lone finalist can be directed to the Leakey ISD office or to the board president.

According to the CDC and other tracking it looks like the flu is very slowly declining. Last week I was still seeing several students with flu like symptoms in my office at school. I have noticed that most are presenting with headache, sore throat, cough and body aches, which is different than the previous weeks where I had many with sinus symptoms as well. I hope everyone is getting well and going to be able
to enjoy the upcoming Spring Break. President Trump has called a war opioid addiction and as part of that has asked us to look in our medicine cabinets and pull out all out dated or unused narcotics. This includes anything with oxycodone, hydrocodone or meperidine. If these are used after a procedure such as dental work, minor outpatient surgeries, major surgeries or after an injury, they are not meant to be taken long term. If you have these drugs or any other dangerous or additive drug that you are no longer taking please consider getting them out of your medicine cabinet. These drugs are dangerous if used inappropriately and can lead to lifelong addictions and legal
problems. Surveys have shown that young people who have tried these drugs report getting them out of their home medicine chest. This effects all communities and the inappropriate use of these drugs is not just a danger to our youth it is a real danger to us all. Becoming addicted to these kind of drugs can happen to anyone and can tear lives apart. We have all seen the deaths caused by over use of these types of drugs. People that were not seeking to kill themselves, just seeking pain relief but had developed a resistance so they took more than the recommend dose resulting in death. For proper disposal you can take your unused drugs to the Sheriff’s office and they will take care of the disposal.

Lots going on both last Friday and this week. Because it was Read Across America Week, Librarian Monica DeLeon asked 6 guest speakers to come on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. to read a story, one speaker for each grade level. For Pre-kindergarten and 2nd grade, Nurse Sandy Feller from the Sabinal Clinic was the selected reader and was accompanied by San Juana Musquiz. Kindergarten children enjoyed a story by Brother Monty Benson. First grade classes were read a Dr. Soos book by Mayor Charles D. Story. It was fitting that our Mayor read a Dr. Soos book on the anniversary of the author’s birth. Pastor David Sprott read to the third grade classes. Reverend Glenn A. Luhrs read a story to the fourth grade classes. The fifth grade classes enjoyed a story read to them by high school teacher Jessica Clark. The Scholastic Book Fair is going on this week: hours are from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. except today when the library is staying open until 6 p.m. This week is also designated as Texas Public School Week and what better time to have a Book Fair and all the festivities connected with it. Also, the elementary children’s Spring Concert is set for March 6. To top it off, the picnic with parents is set for Thursday, March 8, from 11 to 11:30 a.m.
Rabies Clinic
On March 21 at Veterans Memorial Live Oak Park, there will a rabies clinic. Protect your animals, and yourselves, by taking them to get their shots. Cost for the rabies is $12. Other shots are also available.

An ordinary man with an extraordinary mission Like many of you, I’m very sad about Billy Graham passing away. Those who are younger will probably not have the familiar connection with him like some of us older folks, but nonetheless, I’m sure his books and recordings will continue having a beneficial impact on future generations. Throughout my childhood, I remember my parents always dialed in our old television set to watch Billy Graham evangelistic crusades and even though as a typical child I thought church services were somewhat boring, I would still sit and listen. In fact, I may not have realized it at the time, but I’m convinced his messages had a positive effect on my spiritual calling and helped influence me into a life of ministry. Here is one of his more popular statements, “Being a Christian is more than just an instant conversion, it is a daily process whereby you grow to be more and more like Jesus.” He had such a mesmerizing voice and would speak with such passion that you could not help but feel this was a truth that was being relayed from heaven. I believe his sense of urgency along with expounding the ever-important subject about Jesus being crucified and where we are going to spend eternity caused his audience to be riveted to their seats. I recall when my grandparents would come to visit and if Billy Graham was on, my dad would tune in as his parents also appreciated Mr. Graham’s ministry. My grandmother would pull out her

handkerchief and every now and then she would wipe a tear from her eye. I did not understand what was going on at the time but after I grew up I realized she was being blessed and moved deep within her soul. In the church where I grew up, we had prayer alters around the stage and everyone was invited to come and kneel down and it was common to see them weep. Some would cry because of a crisis and some were repenting and asking forgiveness and yet others were often filled with joy. I believe this is a wonderful and natural reaction as we sense God’s presence we can express how grateful we are for who He is. The determination to find a special place to meet with God and fall on our knees before Him can open our spiritual eyes to how much we desperately need Him. We need more messages about yielding our will and inviting Christ to be the Lord of our life as Mr. Graham would always point out. At the funeral, Franklin Graham presented this quote from his father, “No matter what your problem is, if you and I could sit down and talk, I would want to tell you one great truth: God loves you, and He can make a difference in your life if you will let Him. God loves you so much that He sent His Son into the world to die for your sins. When we open our hearts to Christ, He forgives our sins and comes to live within us by the Holy Spirit. He also gives us strength for the present and hope for the
future.” It’s estimated that in his lifetime he preached to live audiences totaling over 215 million people in 185 countries. This along with his books and resources is more than anyone else has ever relayed the gospel of Jesus. He knew what God wanted to say and was used as a vessel of honor to demonstrate the authority of God’s Word. Billy Graham was not perfect and I’m not trying to portray him as a saint, but it’s obvious he truly loved people and had a burden to make sure everyone knew about salvation and eternal life. He was an ordinary man that God used to accomplish an extraordinary mission! It’s never the charismatic personality, intelligence or ability of humans that can change another person, but rather it’s the power of divine truth that convicts the conscience and allows God to transform a life. The opportunity for you to be forgiven and to accept the Lord is available right now as I close with this last quote, “God proved His love on the cross. When Christ hung, and bled, and died, it was God saying to the world, I love you.” To receive the free CD “Keeper of my soul” with scriptures and songs about faith, hope, peace, healing and encouragement visit: billyhollandministries.com

JUST FOR GRINS
by John Kerr, Director of Foundation Camps jkerr@hebuttcamp.org
Goo Goo for Gaga! There’s a new game in town. It’s called gaga ball, and its popularity is sweeping the country, and the canyon for that matter. The game is a favorite for most campers, and it is constantly played during Outdoor Ed, Youth Camp, Family Camp, and Foundation Camp retreats. Whenever campers have a few moments of free time, they quickly migrate to 1 of the 3 gaga ball pits that we have located in our various campsites. I don’t mind telling you that I played a big part in bringing gaga to camp. I built all 3 pits with my own 2 hands, and I take great pride in watching campers enjoy the game. However, lately, I’ve been feeling the negative impact of gaga ball, and I admit that I might have made a big mistake in promoting the game all together. Now parents, let me put your mind at ease- the game has nothing to do with Lady Gaga (thank goodness). In fact, judging from some of the outfits she wears, I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t last 12 seconds in a gaga pit. Actually, the game was introduced in the Middle East. The Israeli translation for the word “hit” is “ga,” and since “hit hit ball” sounds ridiculous, the originating nation’s name stuck. Currently, throughout the world, there are pockets where gaga is played and adored by both children and adults at camps, schools, college campuses, and backyards. So what exactly is gaga ball? Well, I’m glad you asked! The game is usually played in an octagonal-shaped pit with walls that are approximately 30 inches high. Any old softsided ball will do, but a volleyball makes a good gaga ball. It combines the skills of dodging, striking, agility and jumping. The object of the game is to hit opponents with a ball below the waist while avoiding being hit. Players hit the ball with their hands only, and once a player hits the ball, he or she must wait until the ball touches someone else or the wall before hitting it again (no double touches). Blocking with hands/ arms is allowed, but kneeling on the ground is not. If you get touched by the ball below the waist, you’re out, and you must exit the pit until the next game. However, one of the benefits of gaga, is that games usually last less than 5 minutes, and then everybody jumps back in the pit for another round. The game has many advantages. For example, you can have zero athletic talent, yet still excel in gaga ball- my favorite aspect of the game! Kids don’t have to worry about the stigma
of being chosen last for a kickball team. In fact, kids who often struggle in more traditional athletic games often find themselves the last one standing in the pit, and therefore, the game is great for building self-esteem and confidence. The game also builds community. You can have 35 campers standing in an area that is 20 feet across. There is usually a lot of screaming, squealing and laughing during a game, and this can melt the ice, even with the most introverted individual or group in a matter of minutes. The game thrives on encouragement, relationships and fun, and when I ask departing campers what was their favorite part of camp, GAGA BALL is, without question, the most common answer. However, I would be irresponsible and remiss if I wasn’t honest about some of the negative physical impacts that gaga ball can have on campers, especially those over the age of 40! Have you ever seen that old Time Life Magazine pictograph of the evolution of man? You know, the one where the first image of early man is a hunched over primate with long arms and a small brain progressing eventually to modern man who stands erect with a normal brain? Well, because the game must be played in a stooped over posture, I’m pretty sure that if gaga ball continues to sweep the world in popularity, it could have a reverse effect on the whole evolutionary process whereby modern man eventually reverts back to a bunch of hunched over primates with long arms and small brains. Heck, I don’t even believe in evolution, but if you watch me after a few rounds of gaga ball, I look like the first image in that pictograph! Maybe I’m on to something here with this early man analogy. Maybe I should admit that I made a mistake, and warn the world of the degenerating effects of the game. Think about it- even the name gaga itself suggests that is was created by cavemen. “Hey Og, you wanna play some gaga?” “GAGA!” Plus, most gaga players look like they’ve been walking around dragging their knuckles all day. You see, you can hit the ball harder with a closed fist, but you skin your knuckles up pretty good. Come to think of it, a camper who still wants to play gaga after skinning his/her knuckles, implies that they actually might have smaller brains! Gaga ball- it may cause the deterioration of modern man, but it sure is fun!

Students in the nutrition class at Big Springs Charter School created a fabulous chicken alphabet soup and rosemary lemonade. With the prevalence of flu, colds, and upper respiratory illnesses, students enjoyed creating a nutritious comfort food that is super easy and relatively fast to make. Sauté’ the celery, carrot, and onion for 5 to 10 minutes. Add thyme, poultry seasoning, chicken broth and bouillon. Bring to a boil. Add the noodles and chicken and cook on low for 20 minutes. Serve warm. The chicken soup contains 24 grams of protein along with a variety of vitamins and nutrients. Rosemary Lemonade 2 cups lemon juice 1 cup sugar (or stevia sugar substitute) 1 long sprig of fresh Rosemary 4 cups water Bring two cups water and lemon juice to a boil. Add sugar and stir. GRANNY’S KITCHEN BACK TO BASICS....BAKING BREADS “New Stuff” in bread making are rare or nonexistent. The process, 6,000-years-old hasn’t changed much since standardized yeast came on to the market in 1859. The introduction of the gas stove, the electric mixer and the food processor made the process easier, faster and more reliable, but still did not change the basics! Here are some recipes for you to try your hand at. Nothing beats the smell of a kitchen wafted through with the aroma of baking bread!
Banana Bread
1/2 cup butter 4 very ripe bananas 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup white sugar 1 egg 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups cake flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat to a low simmer until browned, and foamy, 7 to 10 minutes. Set aside for 15 minutes. Measure 1/3 cup of browned butter; reserve remaining. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a loaf pan. Mash bananas in a large bowl; stir in brown sugar, white sugar, egg, vanilla extract, and remaining butter. Whisk flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg together in a bowl. Fold flour mixture into banana mixture just until all ingredients are moistened; pour into prepared pan. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean, about 45 minutes.
Old Fashioned Refrigerator Rolls 3⁄4 cup shortening or salad oil 1 cup boiling water or scalded milk 2 eggs beaten 3⁄4 cups sugar 2 teaspoons salt 1 cup cold water 2 cakes yeast or 1⁄2 tablespoon dry yeast 1⁄2 cup lukewarm water 1 1⁄2 cup flour Combine oil and scalded milk. Combine sugar, salt, and beat in cold water. Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water. Let dissolve ten minutes. Combine the three mixtures and add flour. Knead dough until shiny and doesn’t stick on unfloured board. Cover and chill 1 1⁄2 -2 hours. Shape and let rise 1-1 1⁄2 hours. Bake in 400° oven. Cloverleaf 15 minutes. At end of the week, roll remaining dough sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon to make cinnamon rolls.
Buttery Crescents
1 (0.6 ounce) cake compressed fresh yeast 1 Tbsp white sugar 1 1/2 cups milk 1 cup butter 1/2 cup white sugar 3 eggs 5 cups bread flour 1 teaspoon salt Crumble the compressed yeast into a small bowl and mix in 2 teaspoons of sugar. Set aside. In a small saucepan, heat milk until a skin forms on the top. Remove from heat and set aside to cool

slightly. Place 1 cup of butter and remaining 1/2 cup of sugar into a large bowl. Pour the hot milk over them and stir until butter is melted. Let the mixture cool to just above body temperature. Beat in the eggs, one at a time mixing well after each one, then stir in the yeast mixture. Add 3 cups of flour and mix until well blended. Gradually mix in the remaining flour, mixing as well as you can. The dough will be sticky. Cover the bowl with a towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour. After the dough has risen, punch down, cover, and refrigerate overnight. Divide the dough into four pieces. Use one piece at a time, leaving the rest in the refrigerator. On a lightly floured surface, roll the piece of dough out into a 12-inch circle. Spread about 2 tablespoons of butter over the surface. Cut into 8 wedges, as you would a pizza. Roll each wedge starting at the wide end and ending at the point. Place onto a lightly greased cookie sheet and bend the ends so that they are crescent shaped. Cover with a towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled. This will take about 2 hours because the dough is cold. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Wednesday, March 7, 2018 WINTER STORMS-Winter storm Riley that wreaked havoc last week, taking lives, and property damage that has yet to be calculated, is followed by yet, another winter storm. The Northeast is bracing for its second winter storm in a week after one that hit Friday caused the deaths of at least nine people and left hundreds of thousands without power. The next winter blast in the Northeast U.S. is expected to strike Tuesday night as a storm from the Midwest moves in, with a winter storm watch in place for much of the Northeast from Pennsylvania to Maine. The forecast shows around 6 to 12 inches of snowfall for the areas under blizzard warnings in the Plains and through parts of the Northeast. Twenty states from Montana to Maine are under winter storm alerts and 50 million Americans in the path of heavy snow and strong winds Monday through Wednesday.
