The Spirit of ‘45 Albert Austin “Pete” Schaefer was born in Utopia in 1924 to Albert Earl and Bertie Pearl (Guess) Schaefer. As a young boy in school, he broke horses, had a true love of horses. He went into the Army at the tender age of 17; was given his high school diploma. He served three years in the service, even managed to do cowboying in the service. When he got out, he married Stella Hobbs and they had a daughter, Oveta Schaefer. Pete went to body school on the G I Bill at SWTJC. Close friends at school were Joe Buckoviney, Brooks Hicks, Ira Sansom, and Chilton Stoner. The marriage was short lived and after the divorce, his daughter, Oveta, lived with his parents. The Schaefers raised her in their home like a daughter.

Pete then went to work at a gas station for H. Ray. In 1949, H. Ray introduced Pete to Frances Burdett, who was from La Pryor. She was working in a diner across the street from the station. They were soon married. The result of that union was three boys and three girls. Pete opened a body shop, first on Garden Street. Later, he moved to a location near the present day Church of the Nazarene. In 1982, he handed the business over to his son Steve. It was Steve who opened up his shop in North Uvalde at 213 E. Antonio Street. Pete retired and ran goats and horses. On the side, he tinkered with tractors and lawn mowers. He was a natural mechanic. He also loved to play the fiddle and was in several swing bands; The

Nueces Play Boys, Texas Stage Hands, and Rambling Texas to name a few. His brother Raymond played the bass fiddle and Louis Wimberley joined on the guitar. He also taught Glenn Schaefer of Sabinal how to play the fiddle. Glenn’s daughter, Glenda Story, and her son, Chris Story, carry on the musical tradition. Pete’s nephew, Michael Hocker, was learning how to play when Pete passed away two years ago. Once, his son Steve recalls that Porter Waggoner made a visit and invited their band to play with him. After a discussion, Raymond confessed that he was afraid to fly and Pete decided to pass up that opportunity, preferring to play with friends like J. T. Gary and his brother.

remainder of the school year. The Peabody family, wife Cathy and their three children plan to relocate to the immediate area this summer. “My wife and I vacationed with our families in the area while growing up, and we are so happy to have the opportunity to move where we both have such great memories. We are ecstatic to have the chance to share those memories and places with our children” Peabody stated. Sabinal ISD is hosting a meeting for the parents and community to greet Mr. Peabody on Wednesday, May 20 starting at 7:00 PM in the school’s cafeteria. “We pride ourselves as being a small district with BIG ambitions” where teachers teach in classrooms with 16 or less student per teacher, and students have some of the best technology found in any school district in Texas,” Grill stated. “We hope that parents in the surrounding communities will consider Sabinal ISD for a wellrounded, quality education for your child” Grill summed up.
