For years now we have prayed and prayed some more for rain, and now it rained and then it rained some more! Though the time frame was a little too close together, the results have been a blessing to our area. In the past thirty days reports vary, but most have Real County at over 10 inches of rain. While other parts of Texas were ravaged by flash flooding, deaths, missing persons and countless property loss, Real County Sheriff Bruce Carr said “ I want to thank all our First Responders, Sheriff’s Office, EMS, Fire Dept, DPS, Game Warden, TXDoT, County Road crew, and Electric Co., for braving the storm

Because of this we had no loss of life attributed to the flooding.” Pictured is the Frio River on Saturday May 23 at what locals call second crossing or the Pecan Farm crossing on Ranch Road 337 East of Leakey. The Nueces River was also blessed with over 10 inches of rain, which brought the river to the brim. Forecasts call for more rain this week so get ready and as always remember to be Thankful!

Leakey ISD Board members look on as Jan Faulkner leads re-elected board member, Shawn Gray, and new board member Tammie Dugat in the Oath of Office at the May 18, 2015 school board meeting. Gray will begin her third term as a Leakey ISD Trustee. Dugat will fill the position held by Alberto Gonzalez. Gonzalez did not seek re-election to the position. In the past two years LISD Trustees have carried a heavy burden, facility renovations. Throughout the process, Trustees have changed, but the focus has remained the same, the safety of
the children of LISD and the need for a more updated campus. Prior to the bond issue acceptance and construction of the new building, students were accustomed to leaking ceilings, running from class to class in the rain, non-working science labs and the dreaded mold. The Leakey ISD Board of Trustees (current and immediate past) have accomplished what others were unable to do. Thank you to the administration, faculty and board members for putting our children first in their education!

The Spirit of ‘45 First generation American Sal Vetrano was born in 1930, in Queens, New York, to Salvatore T. Vetrano of Sicily and his World War I bride Evelyn Fullenbach of Germany who arrived in 1920 in Brooklyn, New York. As a young child, Sal went to school in Brooklyn and attended ENY vocational high school. He majored in boat building. He graduated in June, 1947, and July 1 he went into the Navy. He attended the Great Lakes, Illinois, boot camp. He graduated in September, had leave from boot camp, and was then sent to Memphis, Tennessee. There he helped reactivate the air base. By November, he was transferred to the Memphis Naval Air Base and by March was at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, waiting for seat duty. His ship was the USS Missouri, a ship special to President Harry S. Truman. While in Norfolk, Virginia, the president and his family came to visit the USS Missouri, spent the day aboard ship, and gave a gift of silver service with the seal of Missouri decorating each piece. Sal recalls the visit fondly.

When the ship was taken out of dry dock, the men were instructed to take 3 days of clothing and they would return to the ship yard. They were to load ammunition. Instead, they did not leave, and he was assigned to the deck force. He was assigned to the surrender deck and his battle station was three 16 inch main battery guns. He was left pointer, meaning he raised and lowered the guns, and fired the guns manually. The men won the Efficiency E and each member of the ship got $25 prize money. In 1949, he transferred to the electrical division, out of the deck force. Next, they took midshipmen from Annapolis to Europe, teaching them seamanship. In June 1950, they picked up midshipmen and docked in New York. He got to visit his mother on liberty. When he returned to the ship, he found that he was going to Korea and to war. At Norfolk, Virginia, they loaded their ship and then left. By the last of June, they were headed to the Panama Canal loaded with fuel, headed into a hurricane. continued page 9
make a difference in the lives of thousands of families in need.” Providing aid in times of disaster is the cornerstone of H-E-B’s Helping Here philosophy, which promises to stand by communities during times of need. In the wake of the floods affecting H-EB communities, company Partners (employees) are distributing more than 5,000 Disaster Relief Cleanup Kits to residents returning to their homes. These kits contain most needed items like trash bags, paper towels, bleach, all-purpose spray cleaner, gloves, sunscreen and insect repellent. More than 15 H-E-B stores near impacted areas are providing additional direct relief and needed items. For 110 years, the company has demonstrated its commitment to communities in crisis by donating financial support, emergency supplies, drinking water and food, as well as providing efficient ways for customers to assist those affected by a natural disaster.
