The Frio Canyon Chamber of Commerce hosted their 1st Annual Fire On The Frio BBQ Cookoff this past weekend at the Chamber Arena in Leakey, Texas. The Chamber had a great turnout with a total of 13 teams. The Cookoff had a total of five categories, Ribs, Fajitas, Chicken, Brisket and Beans. With lots of cookers and lots of fun, the day was filled with laughter and great times had by all. The Chamber of Commerce was excited to host their first event at their newly purchased location. The grounds were in great shape with all the wonderful rain we have been blessed with and the teams were ready to go. Each of the teams submitted their entries in the hopes of winning the prize money, trophy and bragging rights to the 1st Fire On The Frio championship. Governor Abbott Speaks With Garland Mayor, Receives DPS Briefing On Garland Shooting Following the attack in Garland, Texas Sunday evening, Texas Governor Greg Abbott spoke Tuesday morning to Garland Mayor Douglas Athas to offer full support. The Governor also received a briefing from Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw on the ongoing investigation into the shooting.
Following Governor Abbott’s call with the Mayor and briefing from DPS, he spoke with and expressed his gratitude to Garland ISD security officer Bruce Joiner, who was shot by the gunmen while providing security at the event. The Spirit of ‘45 In 1920, Howard Wakefield, Sr. was born in Superior, Wisconsin, and spent his early years there. At the age of 4, his parents, Ben and Marie (Roe) Wakefield moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma. He worked for his dad who did sand blasting, and at the age of 14, Howard was driving eighteen wheelers. At about that time, he also took a bicycle trip back to Wisconsin, living off the generosity of people along the way. It was in Tulsa that Howard graduated from high school. At the age of 20, he went into the Army and was there for two years. He was then transferred to the Army Air Corp, serving as airplane mechanic crew chief of the 147, a transport plane. He then went into the Air Force and retired after 23 years. Next, he went to work for Gus

Nuetze, having had a course while in the service, and learned more about, air conditioning and refrigeration. Eventually he had his own business, Modern Refrigeration, in Uvalde, and later Carrizo Springs. He retired from this at the age of 72. Howard was married to his wife Billie and lost her after 18 years of marriage. He has three children, and eight grandchildren. He knew Nadine Chapman Chenault of Uvalde, met her in 1948 while he was working at Laughlin Air Force Base. Nadine lost her husband Jack in 1968 which ended their 22 year marriage. She and Jack had 3 children, have 4 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. She was living in Uvalde, and he was living in Carrizo Springs, and
they were married in 1989. They compromised by moving to Fort Clark Springs where she still resides, keeping in close touch with both his and her children. The first years of their marriage, they travelled in a recreational vehicle. She likes to brag that they went to every state in America, excluding North Dakota. They went to Old Mexico twice. When they went into Canada, in Quebec, their French was non existent and they had some difficulties there, she laughs. Nadine lost Howard in 2008, ending a marriage of 19 years. She continues to live at Fort Clark Springs and enjoys her many friends, a wonderful church family, and all the memories that she and Howard made over the years.
