FORMER DEPUTY REQUESTS APPOINTMENT TO REAL COUNTY SHERIFF POSITION by Julie Becker

............................ Page 2

SECOND CASE OF EBOLA IN TEXAS ............................ Page 7

Former Real County Deputy Don Gass will seek the appointment as Real County Sheriff. Gass was a Real County

Deputy until March of this year, when he retired from his position after 16 years of service to Real County. Gass was a Jailer Administrator and Deputy for Uvalde County before coming to Real County. Gass and his wife Carrie are long time residents of Real County, as well as several of their children. Following yesterday’s Commissioners Court meeting Gass turned in his application and necessary documentation to apply for the appointment as Sheriff. Gass holds a current Peace Officer’s License, Jailer License and Dispatcher’s certificate. Commissioners voted to accept current Sheriff James Brice’s resignation and set forth a process to fill the position.

Brice resigned at the half way point in his term, therefore Commissioners will appoint someone to fill out the remaining two years of his term. Commissioners stated they will post the position in the local papers, take applications and possibly interview prospective candidates. Real County Judge Garry Merritt stated the decision could be made at a special called meeting or at the November or December meetings. Gass has remained active in the community though he and his wife temporarily relocated to south Texas for work. Gass has stated his desire to fill the position as Real County Sheriff comes from citizen requests and a desire to maintain the community safety that he sought to secure as a Deputy Sheriff.

Gass has strong ties to the community, seeing three of his children graduate from Leakey ISD. Gass’s community involvement runs deep, as a part of several organizations that support children in outdoor activities. Gass said “If appointed to this position, I will work as hard in the position of Sheriff and I did as a Deputy and will expect the deputies to do the same.” Readers, please remember this is not an election. If Don Gass is the candidate you wish to support for appointment to fill out the term of the current Sheriff, please contact your County Commissioner or Real County Judge Garry Merritt.

Chapter 41 Election Asks Voters to Maintain Local Control

National Friends of Libraries Week ........................... Page 11

LEAKEY, TEXAS – October 13, 2014 – Early voting starts next week for the Chapter 41 Special Election being held in Leakey ISD. If passed, the proposition will allow the District to maintain local control by giving the Board permission to purchase attendance credits, bringing attendance up to an acceptable level. If the proposition fails, the State of Texas will get to choose how to equalize wealth in the district and may either detach property or consolidate Leakey with another school district. Leakey has been categorized as a Chapter 41 district since 2008, and has been sending money back to the state every year since. The reason the State is requiring LISD to have this one-time election is because the amount of money the District sends back to the State each year (called recapture) now exceeds the amount of state aid the District receives annually. “This is really just a formality,” states Interim Superintendent, Dr. Barbara Skipper, “that the State is requiring us to perform. It will allow our District to maintain local control, and we will continue to make

payments as we have all along.” The State takes local tax dollars recaptured from “property rich” districts, such as Leakey, and redistributes the funds to “property poor” districts throughout the state. This funding policy has been highly debated for years, and many chapter 41 districts have challenged the constitutionality of the “Robin Hood” plan. In 1995, only 35 districts (1%) were considered Chapter 41. In 2013, the amount of Chapter 41 districts hit 374 (37%), contributing over $1 Billion dollars in recaptured tax dollars annually to the State. To date, almost $17 Billion dollars has been collected and redistributed. Recapture is now the 6th largest source of funding for the State, excluding sales tax. Early voting will be held Monday – Friday, October 20th through the 31st, at Tinkum Hall – part of the Methodist Church Annex. Hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Election Day is Tuesday, November 4th, from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, at the School Library. A photo ID is required. Your vote counts!

IT’S NOT OVER ‘TIL SAL SAYS IT’S OVER!! by Julie Becker

I know, I know, it ended almost a year ago, but local businessman Sal Vetrano and his wife Winnie took a trip to Sicily and I can’t pass it up! Sal wore his Real County Centennial shirt for a picture showing the town of Chiusa Sclafani where his father and grandfather were born. Real County - 100 years in Sicily! Chiusa Sclafani was founded in the early 1300s by the Count Matteo Sclafani. Sal gave the shirt to a new friend, Giusy, who

operates the Oscar dei Sapori restaurant in Chiusa Sclafani. The “Where in the World” series was a very successful tool used to promote the Real County Centennial, Real County turned 100 years old in 2013. What a year we had, we partied, we sang, we danced, we did it all! All to celebrate our heritage, that for most of us, is ingrained into our souls. When the rest of the country seems in complete disarray, Real County, Texas stands strong!

Henry Cannon was born in 1923 under the stars, on the side of the highway, near San Diego, California, where he was raised. He attended school until the 10th grade and quit in order to work and help support his family through the Great Depression. The Civilian Conservation Corp had a camp at Ocean Side, California, and it was there that he found a job for $1 a day, planting pine and holly trees. On December 7, 1941, World War II broke out for America with the sinking of their fleet in Pearl Harbour. He wanted to join the Navy, so in order to get his choice of service, he slept on the street, waiting his turn to sign up. He recalls his sister bringing him sandwiches to eat. By December 13, he was in the military and instead of the usual 6 weeks training, they got only 3 weeks. They drilled in civilian clothes while training and used wood for rifles. Soon he was shipped out on the USS Tennessee to the South Pacific. That ship saw 16 battles, 16 engagements, and the names Midway, Iwo Jima, the Philippines, Serengeti Straits of Gibraltar, rolled off his tongue. On April 12, 1945, he was hurt, thrown into the air, and spent his nights sleeping on the top deck, refused pain medication, preferred to handle the pain himself. He was in bad shape, head wounds were treated last,

by Billie Franklin

and that meant he had to wait. He became a disabled veteran with 10 % disability. He was placed in an Army hospital in Saipan. By November 25, 1947, he was discharged. Back in California, jobs were scarce and he walked the streets. He learned that in La Jolla, California there was a new Veterans hospital. He was there for a month and a half, found out that he had

kidney damage, and the doctor said he would never be able to work again. They awarded him a 50% disability. Later he was awarded at 100% disability. He has had 5 operations for cancer, from asbestos wounds. He began working out of San Diego, truck driving, and finally in construction, but when they were to build a dam in Guadalajara, he decided it was time to fulfill a promise made under fire. Recalling his promise during battle made to another sailor, a man from Texas who was buried at sea, he moved to Fort Worth, Texas. His first job was for Bill McDavis Pontiac as a salesman. “I can sell snow to the Eskimos” he said. He soon was their top salesman. He went back to California where the Teamsters Union ruled. He refused to work for Jimmy Hoffa and in 1964, came back to Texas. He has worked all over the state and has lived a full life in spite of his health problems. Other accomplishments during his lifetime, were his love for dancing, having won many dance contests; he fought professionally in 1947 in the Golden Gloves; has been a used car salesman, still is; began riding motorcycles at age 15 and still does. He also flew to Washington, D C in September of this year, where he and another WWII veteran were able to place a wreath on the World War II memorial.
