Religion professor Chad Spigel, students uncover historic mosaic that depicts soldiers, men, elephants on the floor of a synagogue. For the fourth year in a row, Trinity University religion professor Chad Spigel spent the month of June involved in an excavation that uncovered parts of a mosaic on the floor of a fifth century synagogue in the village of Huqoq in Israel’s Lower Galilee. Two Trinity students also took part in the dig by taking measurements and recording data as part of the painstaking process to delicately move dirt and stones from the site until walls, floors and even mosaic tiles came into view. The mosaics are an extension of a panel found last year and, for the first time, the scene they uncovered included elephants, animals not included in any of the books of the Hebrew Bible. Professor Jodi Magness of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, director of the excavation, has advanced the idea that the new images might depict a Jewish legend about the meeting between Alexander the Great and the Jewish High Priest, different versions of which appear in the writings of Flavius Josephus and in rabbinic literature. Spigel said other researchers think it might portray stories from the book of Maccabees. “We will have to hold off on interpretations until we can do more research,” he said. In addition to Magness and Spigel and their respective universities, sponsors are from Brigham Young Trinity students Sara Breshears, left, and Daniel House, right, join religion professor Chad Spigel, center, at the Huqoq dig site in Israel’s Lower Galilee. Girl Scouts at Disney World The Junior and 6th grade Cadette Girl Scouts headed to Florida for their big Disney World trip. For most of the girls this was the first time they had flown on an airplane but they all loved it and are now experienced flyers. The girls camped out at Fort Wilderness where they all participated with the Chip and Dale Sing-Along and watched “Toy Story” under the stars. The next day was an all day excursion to the Magic Kingdom. Almost from the minute they got into the park, they were meeting

Alejandro “Role” Castillo was born at home to Esebio and Josefa Gonzales Castillo on West Main Street in Uvalde in 1917. He was told that he could not go to school until he had shoes. Dad provided them. He went two years and then his parents were told that Role couldn’t learn. So, at the age of 9, he went with his dad on the sheering crew. He gathered the wool, working under relatives. Some of Uvalde’s families they worked for were the Pulliams, the Smythes and later the Horners. He also picked cotton and did some fencing repair. During the depression, there was very little transportation and not much work. He went with his dad to Bakersville, California, lived with relatives, doing migrant work and sheep sheering. He got drafted into the army October 14, 1941, inducted in Los Angeles. First training was at Camp Roberts, CA, then on to Fort Ord, and finally to Fort Lewis, Washington, where he completed his infantry training. He was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division. At San Diego, he got amphibious training. They learned how to disembark large ships onto

smaller landing crafts, and how to assault the beaches. In September of ‘42, the 3rd Infantry got aboard trains and went to Camp Pickett, Virginia. He was 25 years old. Next up was North Africa followed by the Sicilian campaign, and most of his fellow soldiers were wounded, killed, shot down, or stepped on land mines. His turn came to be point man and he was fortunate to find an empty town, a ghost town. There were only 4 of his squad left when they advanced to Salerno, Italy. Over and over, incident after incident, Role realized that he was spared, “Gracias a Dios”, while the men around him were not. On October 27, 1943, he and several others were sent on a scouting mission. Machine gun fire from German soldiers fired upon them. He was hit on the left foot and another man was wounded on his leg. They were carried back to the Allied lines. continued page 2
Water News and River Flows River flows were taken on the Frio River and Nueces River on September 15th with the flows showing a lot of variation once again. The rains following the Labor Day weekend made a difference at the crossings; for a very short time; and the rains that came on September 12th look to have made a little difference in some locations while having little to no impact in other locations. The forecast for the next few days is looking promising, but don’t count those raindrops until they hit the rain gauge. Fulgham’s Crossing just south of the Alto Frio Baptist Encampment had a flow of 3,851 gpm (gallons per minute) last measurement and now has a flow of 3,707 gpm. This is approximately a 4% drop in the flow. The Leakey Springs Crossing had a flow of 1,796 gpm last measurement and a flow of 1,751 gpm this reading which is about a 3% reduction of flow. The Mill Creek Crossing is flowing about 10% higher than the last

measurement, there are culverts on the south end of this crossing that have no flow reading, this crossing has a flow of 5,678 gpm this measurement up from the flow last measurement of 5,090 gpm. The Frio River Place Crossing this week has decreased since the reading last month. This measurement was 5,408 gpm and the last reading was 7,513 gpm or about a 28% decrease in flow rate. As you can see some of the flows were up while others were down and I believe this is due to the amount of rainfall across the area. continued page 3

characters like Mary Poppins and Mr. Penguin. They saw Tigger and Pooh had a street dance with Mr. and Mrs. Incredible and got to meet and have their picture taken with Goofy and Donald Duck. Not to mention all the rides they enjoyed such as Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, Peter Pan’s Flight and of course It’s a Small World and Dumbo. But the most popular was the Haunted Mansion.
