DAR MEMBERS BEGIN NEW YEAR Members of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Uvalde De Las Encinas Chapter, met at the El Progresso Library in Uvalde at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, with 17 members and three guests present. Regent Betty Lawrence called the meeting to order, welcomed guests Chris Lacey, Rosie Mangold, and Alan Carmichael, and led the opening ritual. Virginia Davis also welcomed the group to the El Progresso Library. The DAR President General’s Message was read by Jakelynn Crawford and stated that this year is the 125th anniversary of DAR and reminds us that DAR was intended as a service organization. Remember that October 11 is a day of volunteer service to our communities. The National Defense Report was read by Karen Collins, and said that by the end of fiscal year 2018, the active Army expects to have drawn down in size from 490,000 to 450,000, according to a July 9th Pentagon report. In 2012, the regular Army had 570,000 soldiers. The service will also cut 17,000 civilian employees. Texas bases affected will be Fort Hood and Fort Bliss. Registrar Patsy Edwards reported the chapter has 63 members. One member has died (Helen Stevens). Billie Toleson from Pearsall was welcomed as a new member, and a ceremony of installation was held. Rosie Mangold and Chris Lacey were introduced as prospective members. Regent Lawrence announced the times of meetings, and asked members to report volunteer hours and fill in their conservation reports. The display to honor Vietnam veterans will be in Camp Wood and Utopia in October, after having been in Leakey and Brackettville during the month of September. The next DAR meeting will be on the third Saturday of October, the 17th, at the El Progresso Library. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership. For more information, contact Betty Lawrence at 830-278-6163. Members honored September as Constitution Month and September 17th as Constitution Day. Uvalde members had County Judge Bill Mitchill sign a DAR Proclamation and Camp Wood members attended a City Council Meeting where a Proclamation was signed by Mayor Jesse Chavez. The program was presented by member Kristi Powers, and was about the Constitution and the Citizenship Process. Questions from a United States Citizenship test were distributed to members who worked in groups to answer the questions immigrants have to complete before becoming US citizens. Each year local emergency service organizations send out their annual letter requesting donations to keep the agency afloat for another year. This year, First State Bank of Uvalde was first in line with their donation to the Leakey Volunteer Fire Department. This all volunteer organization runs mostly on local donations. Monetary donations are received from the County and the City of Leakey donated a pump truck unit this year. During the fall and spring months motorcyclist enjoy our

communities, our views and if need be our emergency services. They of course do not realize when they are in need of emergency services, a dad is called away from his son’s football game, a mom stops cooking dinner, a grandmother leaves her quilting group, all to answer the call of a stranger in need. This year as you decide to give your donation, please consider giving locally. Support the Leakey Volunteer Fire Department!

And so begins the first of what has been said to be many changes to the small community of Leakey, Texas. Above is the new location for the Family Dollar Store being built on Hwy 83 South in Leakey. While this construction is contained for the most part to a side road, the beginnings of the major road renovation of Hwy 83 is in full swing. Though the storm drains are only the beginning of the con-

struction they have given us a look into the future and it’s not pretty. Several complaints have been levied against the project so far and have somewhat been addressed. The haul trucks are following some protocols, such as tarping their loads, removing excess material from tailgates and in general a more controlled atmosphere seems to be in place. As is months past, I encourage local citizens

to learn new paths to their daily destinations. Since we are just getting started and the project will run well into the fall/winter of 2016 or possibly into 2017, alternate routes are a must. The storm drain construction will continue to 3rd Street (Church of Christ) and will then move out to 337 West. With the location of the Post Office and the Nutrition Center, citizens will have to be alert at all times. Be safe out there!

The end is near. Fourteen months ago, we were greeted each morning with the sound of heavy equipment and jack hammers shaking the office building as construction crews demolished the old concrete block classrooms. Today, a new two story building stands and the promise looms that completion is near. Together we can say, “We did it!” What a milestone for the small town of Leakey, Texas. The school is the driving force for the future of our children. We laugh, we cry, we create many lasting memories together. To commemorate these events in our lives, we have the inception of a “memory lane” walkway. Memory Lane will develop over time between the original 1922 quarried stone office building and the new state of the art structure. It will travel from the old cafeteria under the historical oaks and end at the entrance to our new gymnasium. You have the opportunity

to place your memories in Memory Lane. Working with BRICKS R US, Student Council members of Leakey ISD will offer engraved bricks to pave “Memory Lane.” You may consider displaying your family name, business name, memories of graduation, an anniversary or the birth or loss of a loved one. Each 4” X 8” red clay brick will be laser engraved in all capital letters highlighted in black and will hold three lines of text with a maximum of 18 characters per line for a cost of $50. A sample brick is on display in the office building engraved with “Go Big Red” and “Class of 2016.” Applications to purchase a memory bricks are available from Student Council members or on the Leakey ISD website under Memory Lane. We appreciate your support.
