HOLY CROSS HIGH SCHOOL
CROSS Words – 2
From the President Dear Friends, I am pleased to inform you that Mrs. Margaret “Peggy” Leger was recently appointed the seventh Principal of Holy Cross High School. I am delighted that Mrs. Leger has accepted the offer to lead Holy Cross. We have worked together in administrative capacities for many years, and if there is anyone who knows what Holy Cross is all about, it is Peggy. She is well versed in all aspects of the school operation and we will not skip a beat in this transition. On another note, I would also like to share some information with you on our 40th Anniversary Challenge. Last year’s annual giving campaign was the most successful in the history of the school. We had an increase in new donors and an increase in the average gift size. This was very encouraging for us given the current economic climate. However despite this growth we did not meet the challenge. The good news is that our very generous benefactor matched our total and has agreed to match $100,000 for the 2009-2010 school fiscal year.

During these challenging times I am pleased to report that: • We had the lowest tuition increase in the past ten years. • There was no reduction in the amount of financial aid awarded – although there is never enough to meet the need. • We did not reduce faculty thus maintaining the integrity of class size. • Our academic programs were not compromised in any way. • Our outstanding athletic and cocurricular programs remain completely intact insuring that there continues to be something for everyone. In short, an Education in the Holy Cross Tradition is alive and well. I believe this is testimony to the fact that you believe in Holy Cross and what we provide for our young men and women both in and out of the classroom. This cannot happen without your generosity. I want to thank you for your support and hope that we can count on you as we pursue our quest for excellence in all we do. Sincerely,

Vice President for Advancement Dear Fellow Alumni: It’s hard to believe that our alma mater is now over 40 years old. I am truly blessed to be a part of such a great community on a daily basis. In my capacity as the Alumni Director, I am in constant touch with alumni. Whether it’s a personal visit, an email, a letter or a phone call, I enjoy listening to them share their fond high school memories and the impact their Holy Cross experience has had on their lives. Many things have changed over the years at Holy Cross but one remains the same ~ the Mission, educating hearts and minds. Many alumni, including myself, enroll their children here hoping they will have as enriching an experience as we did. Whether you have a child here or not, Holy Cross shaped you in some way and your support will provide that same opportunity for current and future students. This year, it is my hope that each graduating class will increase its participation in the Holy Cross Fund. Your generosity will make that happen. Together, let’s continue the Tradition of Holy Cross.
The Holy Cross Fund This past year we celebrated our 40th Anniversary with a $250,000 Matching Gift Challenge. While we did not reach that goal, we did have the most successful Annual Fund ever. We raised just over $150,000 which was matched by an anonymous donor who has agreed to extend the match through this year. We will get another $100,000 toward this year’s Annual Fund once we’ve reached that amount. In total we will receive the quarter of a million dollar match over a two year span. This year we are hoping that each class will reach a 20% participation level making the Holy Cross Fund even more successful than last year and allowing us to continue to address issues of financial aid, capital improvements and curricular resources.
New Principal Appointed This past August, Mrs. Margaret “Peggy” Leger was appointed the seventh Principal of Holy Cross High School by Tim McDonald, President. Mrs. Leger began her 29th year working at Holy Cross, having served in a number of different capacities during that time. In the fall of 1980, she was hired as a teacher in the Physical Education Department and coach of Cross Country and Track. She began her career in administration in 1982 as Assistant to the Director of Students, in addition to her teaching duties. In 1986, Mrs. Leger became the Assistant Principal/Director of Students
and continued in that position for twenty-two years. In the fall of 2008, she took on the role of Assistant Principal for Academic Life. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Springfield College, and a Master’s degree in Secondary School Administration from Fairfield University. In addition to her teaching and administrative duties, Mrs. Leger is a member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS), the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) and the ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development). In response to her appointment,
Mrs. Leger stated, “I am very appreciative for the opportunity to lead Holy Cross High School as Principal. We have a wonderful faculty and staff who are dedicated to preparing their students for success in life after high school. With the collective effort of our school community, I am confident we will continue to provide an excellent valuesbased Catholic education in a caring and nurturing environment. As we move forward and face head on the challenges private education is presented with today, my experience at Holy Cross leads me to believe that not only will we meet these challenges but we will gain strength from them as we perpetuate our mission of cultivating the hearts and minds of young people to become responsible members of society.”

2009 Spring Musical In May, the Holy Cross High School Student Theatre presented the musical comedy, Barnum. This production traced Bridgeport’s own PT Barnum on a tune-filled, circus cavalcade of a life from the “Prince of Humbug” to the Ringmaster of The Greatest Show on Earth. Barnum presented the fantastic life of showman PT Barnum through his triumphs
and failures, through his exhibits and endeavors against the background of the loving bond between Barnum and his ever-patient and loving wife, Charity. Barnum (played by Pat Mullen from Watertown) led us on a romp through his experiences as THE SHOWMAN of the 1800s. Along the way, we met his loving and skeptical wife,
Charity (played by Vikki Thomas from Waterbury); his 160-year old first attraction, Joice Heth (Sarah Cantito from Waterbury); his most famous attraction, Tom Thumb (Patrick Downey from Torrington); and his “respectable” exhibit the soprano, Jenny Lind (Kaitlyn Bogue from Oxford). We followed the exploits of the Prince of Humbug as he sold his vision of the world to the people of America; his belief is that “There’s a Sucker Born Every Minute” and it’s his job to keep them entertained. The story was kept together by two narrators, the Ringmaster (Chris Brown from Naugatuck) and the Blues Singer (Lianna Squillace from Torrington). The cast was filled out with jugglers, tumblers, stilt walkers, marching bands, circus people and citizens of the great
United States all willing to be humbugged by the Greatest Showman alive. Barnum was directed by Mr. Paul Whealon, a faculty member at Holy Cross, ably assisted by Mr. Ralph Cantito, Mrs. Peggy Johns and Mrs. Thelma Stepan. Choreography was created by Ms. Aimee McKirryher, vocal direction by Ms. Marti Peterson and orchestral preparation was by Mr. Joseph Jacovino, Jr. Technical and backstage responsibilities were handled by Mr. Dennis Killian and his three student stage managersCarmichael Gugliotti (from Wolcott), Katharine Ryan (from Middlebury) and Paul Dente (from Wolcott). A mark of the professionalism that Holy Cross Student Theatre fosters is that 100% of the cast, orchestra and backstage personnel are students from Holy Cross.

CPR at Holy Cross High School Holy Cross’ Physical Education and Health department is going into its seventh year of the American Heart Association’s CPR in Schools program. It all started with the community and financial support of St. Mary’s Hospital and the Waterbury Ambulance Association. Thanks to Dr. Steve Holland of St. Mary’s Hospital this program is viable and continues to grow. He has acquired grants over the years to provide additional CPR manikins (both infant and adult), an AED trainer and the daily materials needed to run the course. Each year St. Mary’s has also made a commitment to the program that insures we have enough CPR books to use as a resource with the students. In addition, the training of the Health and PE staff has been provided through St. Mary’s and the Campion Ambulance group. For the past three years, the American Heart Association (AHA) has also given us a grant which has allowed us to provide each sophomore that we train with a kit to bring home and train members of their family as well as their friends. Since this program started at Holy Cross approximately 1,200 students, teachers and coaches have been trained. Nearly eightyfive percent of this number chooses to become certified in CPR for two years by the AHA. When one adds in the kits that the students take home to train family and friends, the number in the Holy Cross community who have had exposure to CPR training approaches 2,400 people over the last six years. By January 2010, three quarters of the school population will have been trained in CPR. In addition to the four Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) located around the building, Holy Cross is in good hands when it comes to first response to a heart attack situation.
