Dear Alumni and Friends of Holy Cross, As we prepare for the upcoming school year we are also making plans to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Holy Cross High School. I’d like to make you aware of two significant aspects of our celebration. These are the 40 th Anniversary Holy Cross Fund Challenge and the Green and Gold Gala.

Funds from our annual giving campaign (The Holy Cross Fund) help maintain the day-to-day excellence that sets Holy Cross apart from so many other schools.

A generous alumni has offered a Challenge for this year’s Holy Cross Fund. If our annual giving from all other donors reaches $250,000, we will receive a match of $250,000. This 40th Anniversary Challenge is designed to build institutional capacity by broadening and deepening the base of support from all our constituents.

Whether you have recently given, given in the past, or you are considering a first time gift to the Holy Cross Fund, this is a wonderful opportunity to give back to Holy Cross. Look for more information about this year’s Holy Cross Fund and the Anniversary Challenge.

40th Anniversary Green and Gold Gala The Green and Gold Gala is our annual auction dinner dance sponsored by our parent clubs and supported by the Advancement Office. This year’s event will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the school and will be held on Saturday, March 21st at the Aqua Turf in Southington, CT. For this 40 th Anniversary celebration we plan to welcome more than 800 people and have a live and silent auction second to none. We are hoping to have at least one table from each graduating class. It is not too early to reserve a table. Also, we will be seeking donations as auction items as well as providing sponsorship opportunities. More information will be available soon. PLEASE SAVE THE DATE. The real celebration is in the lives of the many young men and women who have passed through these halls and the lives of those who have yet to come. There is nothing more important than securing the future of Holy Cross and the very special experience that is an Education in the Holy Cross Tradition. Please watch for news of different events that will celebrate the past and welcome the future and continue to support us in our efforts to make Holy Cross “Different Where It Counts.”

Advancement Office Notes Holy Cross Fund The 2007-2008 Holy Cross Fund wrapped up on June 30 th. We appreciate the generosity of all who contributed. A summary of the Holy Cross Fund will be included in our Annual Report which will be published at the end of the year.

Regional Alumni Receptions Mr. Bob Greene ‘79 and Mr. Tom Monnerat ‘79 recently hosted a reception in New York City at the New York Athletic Club for Holy Cross Alumni from the area. Tim McDonald, President and Cary Razza Fappiano ‘85, Vice President for Advancement and Director of Alumni Relations, joined the alumni for a night of reminiscing.

Mrs. Lisa Bucciaglia Prior ‘82 opened her Victorian home in Boston to co-host a reception with Ms. Liz Massicotte ‘82, Mr. Tom Holloway ‘86 and Mr. David Hoey ‘85. It was a quaint gathering that allowed for the sharing of fond memories and group discussion.

Amadeo Rinaldi Retires After 39 years Mr. Rinaldi joined the Math Department at Holy Cross High School in 1969. Throughout his tenure, he served in various capacities, most notably as Assistant Principal for Academic Life and most recently as Interim Principal. His work ethic and dedicated service was highly regarded by both his students and his

colleagues. Mr. Rinaldi’s contribution in and out of the classroom were an integral part in maintaining the Holy Cross Tradition and making Holy Cross what it is today. We are truly grateful for his wisdom, loyalty and friendship. We wish him all the best in his retirement.

Crusader Clippings Holy Cross High School Commencement – Sunday, June 1, 2008 At the thirty-seventh Commencement Exercises of Holy Cross High School, 204 students graduated with 98% going on to college. The class amassed close to $2,000,000.00 in scholarships and grants. The following Special Awards were presented: The Valedictorian Award was presented to Victoria Parkes for maintaining the highest grade point average during her four years at Holy Cross. She will be attending Boston College.

The Salutatorian Award was presented to Sherise DeLeon for maintaining the second highest grade point average during her four years at Holy Cross. She will be attending North Carolina State University.

The Sister Margaret Bannon, CND Service Award is presented annually to the senior girl who has demonstrated outstanding service to the school community. Sarah Herlihy is the recipient of this award. She will be attending the University of Chicago.

The Holy Cross Fathers’ Club Award is given each year to the senior boy who has demonstrated the most service to the school community. The award was presented this year to Eamon Downey. He will be attending New York University in the fall.

The Holy Cross Mothers’ Club Award is presented annually to the senior boy who has demonstrated the most academic improvement from freshman to senior year. This year’s recipient was Joseph Jacovino III. He will be attending the University of Connecticut.

The Monsignor Henry E. Flanagan Award is presented each year to the female student who has improved the most academically from freshman to senior year. This award was presented to Gianne LaManna. She will be attending Southern CT State University.

Summer Sports Wrap Up The 2007-2008 school year provided another excellent year in athletics culminating with an appearance in the State Championship game for our baseball team. The team lost that game but proudly represented our school with class and dignity.

Overall our teams compiled a 205 and 82 won/lost record, won 3 NVL Titles and 4 Copper Division Championships. 559 of our 800 students participated in interscholastic athletics last year.

Many graduates of the Class of 2008 will be participating in sports at their respective colleges next year. Holy Cross High School Senior Plans To Play Division I Soccer Chelsea Smith signed a letter of intent to play Division I soccer next fall at Quinnipiac University. Chelsea, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Smith of Terryville, was this year’s winner of the NVL Girls Soccer Outstanding Senior Award.

HOLY CROSS HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCES COMMENDED STUDENTS IN THE 2008 NATIONAL MERIT® SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Holy Cross High School is pleased to announce that the following students have been named Commended Students in the 2008 National Merit® Scholarship Program: Victoria Parkes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Parkes of Terryville, CT; Kristin Burr, daughter of Mr. Michael Burr of Thomaston, CT; and Katherine White, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas White of Naugatuck, CT. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented to these scholastically talented seniors. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation were recognized for their exceptional academic promise. These students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.4 million students who entered the 2008 competition by taking the 2006 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

“The young people named Commended Students in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program are distinguished by their strong academic performance in this rigorous competition,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “Our nation’s pursuit of educational excellence can be furthered by publicly honoring these outstanding students and by acknowledging the important role schools play in fostering their development. We hope that this recognition will contribute to their educational opportunities and encourage all students to strive to realize their potential.”

HOLY CROSS HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS FROM THE INCOMING FRESHMAN CLASS OF 2012 Mr. Timothy McDonald, President of Holy Cross High School, has announced the following students as Scholarship Recipients for the incoming Class of 2012 at Holy Cross High School.

Patrick Downey has been awarded the Brothers of Holy Cross Scholarship, a full tuition scholarship. Patrick, son of Mr. & Mrs. Patrick Downey of Torrington, graduated from St. Anthony School in Winsted.

Daniel Creem has been awarded the Anniversary Scholarship, a full tuition scholarship. Daniel, son of Mr. Neil Creem and Ms. Cynthia Creem of Waterbury, graduated from St. Mary School in Waterbury.

Christopher Buza has been awarded $2,500 for earning one of the highest scores on the Holy Cross High School Entrance Exam. Christopher, son of Mr. & Mrs. Arnis Buza of Naugatuck, graduated from St. Francis of Assisi School in Naugatuck.

Jordan Morrissey has been awarded the Board of Directors Scholarship, a full tuition scholarship. Jordan, son of Mr. & Mrs. William Morrissey of Naugatuck, graduated from City Hill Middle School in Naugatuck.

Mary Malley has been awarded the Faculty Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $2,500. Mary, daughter of Atty. and Mrs. Mark Malley of Plymouth, graduated from St. Peter-St. Francis School in Torrington.

Each year Holy Cross High School awards scholarships to deserving students of the incoming freshman class based on high academic achievement (based on middle school grades and performance on the Entrance Exam), good character, recommendations and personal accomplishments. The scholarships are renewed yearly on the condition that the student maintains at least a 90 average.

The Holy Cross High School faculty, staff and student body would like to congratulate all Scholarship Recipients and Welcome them to our community!

2008 HALO AWARDS The Seven Angels Theatre presented its 5th Annual Halo Awards to outstanding local high school theatre programs. For the two productions that Holy Cross presented this year (The Merry Wives of Windsor in the fall and Man of La Mancha in the spring), Student Theatre was nominated for 16 awards.

Congratulations to all members of Student Theatre who were nominated and to the following award recipients: Outstanding supporting actor in the fall drama The Merry Wives of Windsor...Wade Perkins Outstanding actress in the spring musical Man of La Mancha...Katie M’Sadoques Best small group in a musical for their “chapel” scene in Man of La Mancha...Steve Mraz, Kaitlyn Bogue, Kyle Humphrey and Vikki Thomas

Alumni News Peter Pronovost, Class of 1983 One of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people!

Peter J. Pronovost, MD, PhD has been chosen by the editors of Time Magazine as one of their 100 most influential people for 2008. His work in innovating ways to improve patient safety and care are changing the way, not just the US, but how the world thinks about medical care. Dr. Pronovost is a practicing anesthesiologist and critical care physician, teacher, researcher, and international patient safety leader.

He is a Professor in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (Departments of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, and Surgery); in the Bloomberg School of Public Health (Department of Health Policy and Management) and in the School of Nursing. He is also Medical Director for the Center for Innovation in Quality Patient Care, which supports quality and safety efforts at the Johns Hopkins Hospitals.

In 2003, Dr. Pronovost established the Quality and Safety Research Group to advance the science of safety. Dr. Pronovost and his research team are dedicated to improving healthcare through methods that are scientifically rigorous, but feasible at the bedside. Dr. Pronovost holds a doctorate in clinical investigation from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

The author of more than 200 articles and chapters in the fields of patient safety, ICU care, quality health care, evidence-based medicine, and the measurement and evaluation of safety efforts, Dr. Pronovost is also a frequent speaker on the topics of quality and safety leadership and implementation of large scale change.

Golf Tournament The Annual Crusader Classic Scholarship Golf Tournament was held at the Country Club of Waterbury on June 23, 2008. We had a great turn out with over 140 golfers.

Class Notes Class of 1984 Dale Desaulniers lives in Boynton Beach, Florida, with his family and has been working as the Human Resources Manager of the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority.

Besides helping to “Go Green” throughout the South Florida region through mass transit from Miami to West Palm Beach, Dale is also a partner in a pool cleaning business.

Class of 1986 Christine (Cornell) Ieronimo recently returned home from Ethiopia where she and her husband, Michael, adopted a 2-year-old little girl named Eva. Eva joins Christine, Michael and their three children Jack, Alex, and Diana.

Class of 1988 John Cornell and his wife, Debbie, adopted a 2-year-old little girl, Charlotte, from Ethiopia one year ago. She joins John, Debbie and their daughter, Anna Grace.

Over 60 Years of Collective Service Three employees retired from Holy Cross at the end of this past school year.

Mrs. Patricia Dalton of the Science Department leaves after 8 years; Mrs. Helen Bosticco, Attendance and Guidance Secretary, leaves after 20 years; and Mrs. Elaine Mazzei of the Math Department leaves after 33 years.

The Holy Cross Community shares in wishing them a happy, healthy, and rewarding retirement. Their contributions have helped make Holy Cross the school that it is today.

They are true educators in the Holy Cross Tradition and have had a tremendous impact on the lives of the young men and women as well as those of their colleagues. We are all most grateful.
