Mission and Purpose The MISSION of Holy Cross High School is to assist in the total Christian education of young men and women. To accomplish this, Holy Cross High School, in cooperation with parents, provides a framework which fosters integration of the spiritual, intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth of each individual. Holy Cross High School is an integral part of the mission of the Catholic Church. Our special role at Holy Cross High School is founded on the love that Jesus Christ has for us. We believe this love will lead us to an awareness of the uniqueness of each person in the Holy Cross community. The school’s PURPOSE is to foster the development of conscience and a sense of responsibility in each member of the school community. We trust that the awareness of Christ’s love for us will lead us to a Christian commitment which manifests love and concern for all.

The President’s Year in Review Dear Friends of Holy Cross, As we embark on this new school year, I want to reflect on the school’s progress over the past year as well as look to the future with respect to the pursuit of excellence in the Holy Cross tradition. As a community of faith, we prepare our students through academic, social and spiritual learning experiences that form and transform them. Our Catholic Identity and Holy Cross Mission are woven into the fabric of every aspect of school life. Prayer services are held each morning in Memorial Chapel and school community liturgies are celebrated on holy days and special occasions. Our Thanksgiving Eve and Graduation Liturgies welcome our families, alumni, and the greater Holy Cross Community. In this Year in Review, we highlight many of our activities and achievements during the 2012-2013 school year. I want to mention just a few: Student Government is very much a part of school life, helping to oversee our more than 40 clubs and activities. This year a group of students again attended the Holy Cross Student Leadership Conference at Holy Cross College in Notre Dame, Indiana. Brother John Paige, who was the first athletic director at Holy Cross, Waterbury, is the President of Holy Cross College and looks forward each year to connecting with our delegation. Our student representatives also dined with Brother Harold Hathaway, past principal and first president of Holy Cross High School, who now teaches at Holy Cross College. Our students continue to be involved in numerous community programs such as our annual “Holy Cross Day of Service” in which students spend time at a local nursing home. Some of our other activities include: Crusade for the Cure Club, Role Model Dinner, Can Do Can Drive, Digs for Diapers Volleyball Tournament and Lighting the Way. You can read more about many of these in the pages that follow. Our athletes achieved great individual and team successes, as well as recognition for sportsmanship and academic achievement. Boys lacrosse enjoyed its second season and continues to grow in participation. Girls lacrosse began this year and seems to be as popular as the boys program. Golf and Cheerleading each won state championships in their respective divisions. Our highly competitive interscholastic athletic program continues to provide rich experiences for our students. This fall, our graduates are once again heading out to outstanding colleges and universities, having amassed over $3 million in scholarships and grants. They will be attending Boston College, Bentley, Emory University, King’s College, Providence College, and Tufts University, just to name a few. Our ‘Reunion Weekend’ brought many alumni together over the Thanksgiving weekend to reconnect and reminisce. The Class of 1972 celebrated their 40th Anniversary, becoming the first class to reach this milestone. This class started many of the traditions that we continue today. They began a new one this reunion year by establishing a Class Gift to raise money for the Holy Cross Endowment Fund, which provides financial assistance. Many of those who attended the reunion recognize how much their high school experience benefited them and want to help others have access to that same opportunity. Advancement efforts continue to reap benefits for the school. Last year we exceeded our goal for the Holy Cross Fund, increased the number of major gifts, and saw an increase in bequests. Finally, in an attempt to address the difficult economic climate of the past few years, Holy Cross introduced a Guaranteed Tuition model beginning with the 2012-2013 school year. It provides families with a consistent tuition throughout the student’s four years at Holy Cross, giving them the ability to plan and budget for this expense. It has been very well received. The environment that prevails here comes together by design, including outstanding teaching and a school dedicated to making an education in the Holy Cross tradition accessible, regardless of financial resources. I encourage you to periodically visit our website to keep up to date with our ongoing activities and to see how we continue to Make a Difference.

Crusade for a Cure
Founders Week
It was year three for the Holy Cross Club ‘Crusade for a Cure’ who raised money all year for the American Cancer Society. The new club participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at White Memorial in Litchfield on Sunday, October 14th. The walk is a 3.1 mile walk to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research and treatment. Over 60 students, faculty, parents and alumni attended the walk and fought back against breast cancer. Crusade for a Cure was hard at work during the month of October to raise breast cancer awareness. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, they had a “Dig Pink” Volleyball game where several faculty members, who won their battle with breast cancer, were recognized. The students also planned a “Pink Out” Football game at the Stadium where they raised money through a “Pink Out” bake sale and sold bracelets. In June, students and faculty participated in the American Cancer Society’s Annual Greater Waterbury Relay for Life held at Crosby High School. The team raised money through a car wash, by face painting, and by selling watermelon and Crusade for a Cure T-shirts at the Relay. The team logged many miles and had great fun doing it. It was a very successful year!
March is the time when we, as a Holy Cross community, honor our Founders, Blessed Basil Moreau and St. Marguerite Bourgeoys. During Founders Week each day was celebrated differently. Spirituality Day included a special liturgy with Archbishop Cronin; Fine Arts and Service Day showcased our students’ artwork and musical talents, as well as including a school-wide assembly focusing on the importance of reaching out to those in local, state, national and global communities; Club and Class Day was dedicated to showing club or class pride by following a “color” dress code; and on Athletics Day students wore a shirt or jersey from their favorite team and were served stadium type food at lunch. It was a fun week of celebrations!
Project Hope Every year, the Brothers of Holy Cross ask students attending Holy Cross high schools to participate in a national competition known as Project Hope. Students have the opportunity to explore their gifts and talents in writing, film, and music. Project Hope 2013 asked students in our Holy Cross secondary schools to respond to questions that related to both the worldwide celebration of the Year of Faith and our own Holy Cross spirituality. There were close to 350 submissions to the contest representing 10 Holy Cross schools from California to Connecticut. Holy Cross is so pleased to announce that two of our senior students, Tiffany-Marie Golek and Zachary O’Rourke, came in second place. We congratulate them on their success!
Lighting the Way Halloween Happening
4
In October, students participated in the 10th Annual Halloween Happening. This wonderful event has brought smiles to hundreds of children, as well as their family members, who trick-or-treat around the school. Over 400 Holy Cross students helped convert classrooms to different themed rooms, decorated the hallways, and turned the cafeteria into a magical place complete with Disney characters. They created a safe environment which allowed young neighborhood kids to collect candy, enjoy arts & crafts, and participate in a variety of different Halloween games.
Students are making a difference in Ethiopia at the Gimbichu Health Clinic. The project began as the Holy Cross community welcomed back alumnus Christine Ieronimo ‘86 in March. She shared how she became involved with a village in Ethiopia and is now committed to assisting Pathways to Children, a non-profit organization that works to help underprivileged children in India and Ethiopia. After Mrs. Ieronimo’s moving presentation, the Holy Cross Student Government began a new service project called “Lighting the Way for a Better Tomorrow”. Students and faculty raised money through the sale of paper flashlights to help purchase school supplies and a generator for the health clinic so that 24-hour care could be provided for patients.
National Merit Commended Student
Pilgrimage to Montreal A number of students and adults from our various Holy Cross Brothers’ schools made the annual pilgrimage to St. Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal in July 2013. There were representatives from Holy Cross High School in Flushing, NY; Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, CT; Holy Cross High School in San Antonio, TX; and Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron, OH. St. Joseph’s Oratory, one of the largest Catholic shrines in North America, is a great basilica with a giant copper dome built in honor of St. Joseph, patron saint of Canada. The massive edifice, high on the slopes of Mount Royale in Quebec, belies its simple origins as the dream of a humble lay brother named Brother André. Pilgrims still come from all over North America to pray for healing at Saint André’s shrine. Students Joseph O’Rourke, Claire Buckley, Meredith Narowski, and Matthew Araujo, chaperoned by Mr. Louis Howe, Campus Minister, represented Holy Cross, Waterbury. Joe said this about his experience, “My pilgrimage to Montreal was easily one of the best experiences of my life. Not only did I explore a different culture and way of life, I also was fortunate enough to meet new people from across America as well. Many of the other students and teachers had amazing stories to share with me that taught me how to cope with stresses in life and become a better human being. I wouldn’t change anything about my time in Montreal.”
Leadership Conferences In September, 60 Holy Cross students went to Leadership training at St. Anthony Church in Prospect. This conference was organized specifically for student leaders at Holy Cross in Waterbury. The conference was run by students with the help of two faculty members. Students learned about their different leadership styles and how it is important to have a balance of personalities in all of our student organizations. The students reflected on the question “What do we stand for as Holy Cross student leaders?” and used their ideas to develop goals and plans for the academic school year. This past summer, five students and two faculty members went to South Bend, Indiana for the Holy Cross Institute Student Leadership Conference. Seniors Stephanie Brown, Garret Goral, and Melissa Grocki, along with juniors Claire Buckley, Tyler Gargano, and Anthony Porzio, spent the week with sixty other Holy Cross students from around the country. These Holy Cross leaders spent time reflecting on their roles within their school communities and also enjoyed participating in a day of service.
Principal Margaret Leger announced that Lauren O’Loughlin was named a Commended Student in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented by the principal to this scholastically talented senior. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation were recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2013 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013 competition by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) “Recognizing academically talented students plays a fundamental role in the advancement of educational excellence within our nation,” commented an NMSC spokesperson. “The young people recognized as Commended Students represent some of the best and brightest minds in the country as demonstrated by their outstanding performance in our highly competitive program. We sincerely hope this recognition will provide them with additional educational outlets and motivate them in their pursuit of academic achievement.”
Role Model Dinner This year a new tradition, the Role Model Dinner, was started by the class of 2013. Each senior was allowed to invite one individual who has served as a role model in their life, to a dinner at the school. Seniors invited their mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, family friends, teachers, and coaches to this wonderful evening. There was a slide show of pictures with each senior who attended and their role model. Selected seniors shared stories of how their role models shaped their individual lives. It truly was a great night as seniors took time to thank someone who has helped them up to this point in their lives. Seniors were reminded by Principal Leger that while that one person by them at dinner had a significant impact, every senior needed to thank all the people who have supported them over the last four years.
Can Do Can Drive The student body collected 350lbs. of food and donated it to the Middlebury Food Pantry.

The Arts Student Theatre The Holy Cross High School Student Theatre presented two productions this year. In December, the students performed a stage adaptation of the classic film, It’s a Wonderful Life, in the Holy Cross auditorium. The cast was composed of nearly 30 students with the main roles played by Ryan Holub, Jillian Bendtsen, Julia Daniels, Nick Cavallo, Alison Hudson, Travis Karas, Matt Araujo and Emily Badger. In May, approximately 40 students presented the 1971 musical Godspell. The two main characters were Jesus, played by Ryan Holub and Judas, played by Nick Cavallo. The remainder of the cast was made up of HC students who represented Jesus’ disciples. The shows were directed by faculty member, Mr. Paul Whealon, who was assisted by faculty members, Mrs. Lori Conetta (It’s a Wonderful Life) and Ms. Lyn Nagel (Godspell). Choreography and dance direction for Godspell was created by Mr. Ralph Cantito ‘74, vocal direction by Mr. David Irvine and orchestral preparation by Mr. David Gardino. Technical and backstage responsibilities for the fall production were handled by Mr. Ian Diedrich and his student stage managers, Tom O’Donnell and Julia Flaminio, who also assisted on the spring musical along with many other students.

Four students graduated with the Class of 2013 and will be attending the University of Washington, the University of Colorado and Northeastern University. All of the international students come to Holy Cross to study for the duration of their high school experience, with aspirations to continue their postsecondary education at colleges and universities in the United States. President McDonald
Receives Prestigious Award
I
n March, the Association of Catholic Admissions and Advancement Professionals of New England (ACAAP) presented Tim McDonald, President of Holy Cross High School, with the William A. MacNeill Award at their annual conference at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. The William A. MacNeill Award is presented to a current ACAAP member whose contribution to a member organization and/or to the profession encompassed by the membership reflects honor on ACAAP, its mission and its purpose. The recipient will have served in the advancement or admissions profession for a reasonable length of time and be honored for a pattern of service and performance rather than for unusual success in a single event. The award honors William MacNeill, the first President of the organization formerly known as New England Association of Catholic Development Officers (NEACDO), for his 30+ years commitment to Catholic school advancement and for the inspirational example of leadership and knowledge he has embodied to all in the profession. The award was presented to Mr. McDonald by David Erwin, President of ACAAP and Director of Development at Cambridge Montessori School who said: “Our recipient has served the students, faculty, staff and families of Holy Cross High School for more than 40 years. Known throughout the 40 year history of Holy Cross by many titles and capacities, our recipient leads Holy Cross today as their President, more importantly, as the fiber that connects the people and programs of Holy Cross. Tim McDonald with David Erwin, President of ACAAP He provides the living example, inspiration, and spirit of the school’s mission to all who are served and touched by Holy Cross. Every alumnus of Holy Cross knows our recipient. They know him in different capacities and many could say that he had a positive and direct impact on their lives. He has the respect of the entire faculty, staff and Holy Cross community. His strong leadership, dedication, and commitment has brought Holy Cross to where it is today. He has preserved the mission and the Holy Cross Catholic tradition of educating hearts and minds and has always had Holy Cross as his number one priority. He is a visionary, engaging, and always advances the mission of the school. The community is blessed to be led by a strong educator and a great man. As President, he has built a strong and energizing Board of Directors, attracted significant leadership and challenge gifts, assembled an experienced, talented and dedicated team of advancement professionals and has built a solid base of support upon which Holy Cross will build its future. Most importantly, as the advancement program grows in strength and Holy Cross continues to grow in stature as a premier Catholic high school, our recipient is setting the stage for the future through careful strategic and succession planning. In other words, for more than forty years and beyond, his priority has been and always will be the stewardship of the mission of Holy Cross. I am honored on behalf of ACAAP to present the 2013 William A. McNeill Award to Mr. Tim McDonald.” Tim McDonald has served as President of Holy Cross since July 2007. After he began his teaching career at Waterbury Catholic High School in 1968, McDonald joined the Holy Cross High School community in 1971 serving as a member of the faculty, coaching staff, Dean of Students, Principal and Vice President for Advancement.
