Girls Softball Wins Class “S” Championship...Again The Girls Softball Team took home the Class “S” Championship for the second year in a row. It was a triumphant finish for the Lady Crusaders. They ended their season with a 24-3 record, winning semifinals and finals against East Granby and Notre Dame, respectively. “We had great team chemistry,” said Meg Dwyer ’05, Director of Student Activities and Softball Coach. “We had really strong senior players including Lindsay Barton, Rebecca Anderson, Lauren Dwyer and Mackenzie Dolishny. It wasn’t about number at bat or number of outs. The seniors taught the other members about what it means to be part of a team.”

oly Cross announced that Catherine Xeller will be the new Director of Guidance. Ms. Xeller, who has been a member of the Guidance Department for the last seven years, will succeed Ed Generali. A native of Branford, CT, Ms. Xeller first heard about Holy Cross upon graduation from Southern CT State University (SCSU, B.A., Psychology & M.S., School Counseling). Her professor, Mr. Generali’s sister,
work on ear training and analyzing the complexities of music. “Then, students can start composing and producing their own music,” she said. Ms. Brazauskas studied classical piano from age five through high school. She later studied opera and found a new passion: singing. “I felt like I formed a better connection to people through my voice. Being

Over time, she has ascertained that an effective counselor needs to have an overall sense of compassion, empathy, and self-discipline to ensure every student has a positive experience.
able to move someone by music is rewarding for me.” She attended the Hartt School of Music and earned a B.M. studying two different styles of music: opera and jazz vocal performance. “I love classical, jazz and electronic music,” she said. “I want my students to learn every type, utilize and create their own style. It is so gratifying to see the kids learn.”
Since her arrival, Ms. Xeller has become one of Holy Cross’s most beloved faculty members. She is known for her dry wit and great work ethic. “Our kids are awesome,” she said. “They all have their own stories. It is fun to be a part of that story.” Ms. Xeller will lead an office of four including Sister Pat Jamele, Mr. Generali (who will stay on part-time) and Jodie LaCava McGarrity ’93, former Director of Admissions and Public Relations. “I have really big shoes to fill with Ed,” said Ms. Xeller. “I am really excited for the new school year, working closely with my team and growing the department.” september 2016

Developing
citizens Community Service is a part of Holy Cross’s DNA. It holds as much weight and gravitas as the Academic program.
h
oly Cross students, like those in other schools, donate countless hours of service to members of the immediate and extended local communities. These service initiatives occur throughout the year, even when school isn’t in session. Many take place concurrently with others. However, there is one major difference that separates Holy Cross from many other schools. “Our kids aren’t required to do service hours for graduation,” said Meg Dwyer ’05, Director of Student Activities. “They donate their time because they want to do it; not because they have to do it.” This key value has lived through legions of Crusaders. “We know that we are fortunate to have what we have,” said Lindsay Barton ’16. “We want to give back to other people.” Several on campus groups including National Honor Society (NHS), Peer Ministry, Student Council, Senior Life Board, Athletic Council, Crusade for a Cure and Student Activities have raised money and awareness for a variety of causes. Over the past year, the Holy Cross community donated toys, clothing and food to various organizations in the Greater Waterbury area including Apple Rehab, Children’s Community School, St. Vincent

DePaul, Middlebury Food Pantry and Greater Waterbury Interfaith Ministries. “Knowing you are helping others makes you feel better about yourself,” said Drew DaSilva ’16, Treasurer of the NHS. Every Wednesday morning, NHS members make sandwiches for local soup kitchens. “This has been a tradition,” said Rebecca Anderson ’16, NHS President. “Former NHS members will definitely remember gathering in the cafeteria every week for this. I got involved in community service because I wanted to do more than just academics. As Holy Cross students, we receive so much from our teachers. When you receive care like that, it makes you want to give back.” Athletic Council President, Lauren Ferry ’16 echoes Rebecca’s sentiment. “Holy Cross teachers have the best intentions for their students. They stay after hours and come to our games. They love to see us grow and develop.”

This past summer, 33 students (freshmen through juniors) and faculty embarked on a weeklong service trip to Virginia Beach through Catholic Heart Work Camps. During the day, the group provided manual labor to a local homeless shelter. They assembled furniture, worked in a food pantry, handled grounds keeping and sorted clothes and toys at a thrift store. In the evening, through various programs, students discussed why their faith calls them to serve those in need. “Our kids were awesome,” said teacher, Kyle Piatak. “It was fantastic to see them take five days out of
their own summer and be Christlike for people.” Community service at Holy Cross is not defined by one isolated event. It is a constant priority and passion that lives and breathes throughout the school year. “At Holy Cross, we are not just preparing students. We are developing citizens,” said Ms. Dwyer. “That is keeping with our original mission.” “I love community service,” said Cliff Hodak ’18. “I feel great doing it. It is always important to give back to the community. If everyone does a little part, it adds up and makes a huge impact.”

Alumni Field
Terri Ann Parks Named Director of Admissions
This past spring, President Frank H. Samuelson, Jr. ’73 and a committee of twelve alumni announced the development of Alumni Field. This ambitious endeavor honors nearly fifty years of Crusaders who have played competitive athletics for Holy Cross.
Holy Cross High School is proud to announce that Terri Ann Parks will take on the position of Director of Admissions, effective September 2016. A Waterbury native and Southington resident, Mrs. Parks will succeed Jodie LaCava McGarrity ’93 who held the position since 2004. Rafael Hamawi ’14:
Learning Immunology This past summer, he participated at the Building Diversity in Biomedical Sciences research program at Tufts University. He worked on an immunological exploration entitled Investigating the Regulation of Myosin during T Cell Activation. “We imaged and examined cells,” said Rafael. “We used immunofluorescence to image cells to identify the position of tropomyosin in an activated T cell.” The project focused on how tropomyosin regulates T cell activation. Tropomyosin is involved with the motility and remodeling of the T cell cytoskeleton when the T cell is activated.
W
hen Rafael Hamawi ’14 was fourteen, his grandmother passed away after a long battle with cancer. “I always wondered what was going on inside of her,” he said. “Watching her, I felt helpless. Seeing what she went through made me want to help others so that they didn’t suffer like she did.” Rafael, a Waterbury, CT native, always had a love for the sciences. A collection of personal experiences led him to where he is today as a junior studying biology at Assumption College. He has spent the last few years studying, working on internships and shadowing physicians.
“I studied two tropomyosin isoforms to identify which tropomyosin protein recruits myosin to the actin cytoskeleton in T cells,” he said. “My studies suggested that both of the tropomyosin isoforms are responsible for recruitment however further studies need to be conducted in order to confirm if it is both or one of the tropomyosin isoforms. Overall, this project is important so that we can understand T cell activity and formulate enhanced treatments that can attenuate T cell signaling in patients with T cell hyperactivity or autoimmune diseases.” Rafael is very passionate about the research aspect of the medical profession. He will apply for MD and dual MD/PhD programs in Biomedical Science in his senior year of college. These programs will allow him to work on both research and clinical work. He is already getting exposure to real world medical environments and situations. “When you get into this setting, it becomes more real,” he said. “It’s really cool when you put together information you learned in class or in a text book. Treatments are complex and vary between patients. However, it is a much more relaxed setting than you think. Grey’s Anatomy makes it more dramatic.”

the Inaugural Chris Corbett ’93 5K Race “Christopher D. Corbett, a Gentleman. Christopher entered Holy Cross High School with the values taught to him by his loving parents firmly etched in his heart. To the delight of his teachers and the admiration of his classmates, Christ conducted himself throughout his four years with integrity, quiet self-assurance, determination and courage to emerge as an accomplished scholar and a leader among his peers. His concern for others, his ability to listen, and his even-tempered sense of judgement made Chris the one to look to in any situation. In many track and cross country team meetings, I glanced at Chris for his nod of assurance, knowing that he had the team’s ear as well as this coach’s confidence and trust. Chris was a gentle man.” —Brother James KanE, C.S.C.
