Muy buenas Hilario, un placer tenerte en nuestras páginas. Regresas a Sotogrande después de un par de temporadas ausente, ¿cómo está siendo tu vuelta a las canchas de Sotogrande?

Así es, estuve en 2021 con BN Polo, la realidad es que disfruté mucho de una temporada increíble, hacía cerca de diez años que no venía a Sotogrande. Es increíble ver cómo sigue creciendo y evolucionado el torneo cada año, como las canchas son mejores aún y ver cómo progresa el torneo y la competitividad. Aquel año se escapó la Copa de Plata en una gran final… por los pelos, contra Ayala [ríe]. Esperemos que este año puede quitarme esa espinita y levantar uno de los trofeos.

Vuelven los 22 goles a Sotogrande esta temporada en el Alto HCP, ¿supone un gran salto de calidad y el destino a nivel de polo profesional?

Absolutamente. Ha crecido mucho en infraestructuras, en calidad, en número de equipos en el Alto, en espacios para el torneo y atención a los equipos y los polistas. Se nota esa dedicación, sólo hace falta ver el fixture con los equipos participantes tanto en el Alto, como en el Mediano y bajo. El torneo crece año a año y eso se ve también en la calidad de los equipos y grandes organizaciones presentes, que venga a jugar Dubai, Park Place o Marqués de Riscal dice mucho del nivel que se está consolidando en Sotogrande. Y con el Mediano pasa igual.

Hello Hilario, it is a pleasure to have you among our pages. You are returning to Sotogrande after an absence of a few seasons, how is your return to the pitches of Sotogrande going?

Indeed, in 2021 I was with BN polo, the truth is that I really enjoyed an incredible season, it had been ten years since I had come to Sotogrande. It is incredible to see how the tournament continues to grow and evolve each year, how the pitches are even better and how the tournament and competitiveness progresses. That year you missed out on the Silver Cup in a great final... it was so close, against Ayala (laughs). Let’s hope I can get that monkey off my back this year and win one of the trophies.

The 22 goals are returning to Sotogrande this season in the High HCP, is it a big leap in terms of quality and the destination in terms of professional polo?

Completely. It has grown a lot in terms of infrastructures, quality, the number of High HCP teams, spaces for the tournament, and the care of teams and polo players. That dedication is felt, you only have to see the fixture with the teams participating in both the High, and Medium and Low categories. The tournament is growing each year and that is also seen in the quality of the teams and great organisations present,thefactthatDubai,ParkPlaceandMarquésdeRiscal are coming says a lot about the level that is being established in Sotogrande. And the same goes for the Medium handicap.

Este año compites con Park Place, una organización con la que llevas unido varios año, ¿cierto?

Asíes.Arranquéhace5/6añosconParkPlace,desdesusinicios en el Alto, y tengo que agradecer que Andrey [Borodin] ha sido muy generoso conmigo, con mi familia y la organización es una maravilla. Es una apuesta firme y constante por tratar de tener los mejores jugadores, los mejores caballos y una estructura de más alto nivel internacional.

Enlazas una temporada de mucho éxito, con esa victoria en el US Open…

Una temporada espectacular, Desde hace tres años veníamos jugando el Alto en Estados Unidos y siempre pasábamos muy cerca;disputamosfinalesyestábamosaunpasodelograralgo grande.Porsuerteesteañoseconsiguió.Hansidotemporadas de mucho trabajo, de esfuerzo y como te comentaba, de una gran apuesta de Park Place por situarse como una de las mayores organizaciones de polo y su constancia en buscar las mejores herramientas para siempre ser competitivos en todas las copas en las que participa. Se merecían todos ellos esa victoria y un US Open es una manera fantástica de ver recompensado ese trabajo.

ThisyearyouarecompetingwithParkPlace,anorganisation you have been with for several years, right?

Indeed. I began 5/6 years ago with Park Place, since its beginnings in the High handicap, and I have to thank Andrey (Borodin) who has been very generous with me, with my family, and the organisation is wonderful. It is a firm and constant commitment to try to have the best players, the best horses and a structure at the highest international level.

You are arriving right after a very successful season, with the victory in the US Open...

A spectacular season, for three years we had been playing the High category in the United States, and we always came very close; we competed in finals and we were a stone’s throw from achieving something great. Luckily, we achieved that this year. They have been seasons with lots of work, effort, and as I was saying, a great commitment by Park Place to establish itself as one of the greatest polo organisations and its perseverance seeking the best tools to always be competitive in all the cups it competes in. Everyone deserved that victory and a US Open is a fantastic way to see that work rewarded.

Obviamente, y más aún en las exigencias que se mueve Park Place. Siempre aspira a tener los mejores caballos, las mejores herramientas y cuando un equipo te da todo para ganar existe esa responsabilidad de estar en liza. Park Place siempre se presenta a competir, sale aganar.Nosiempreseda,peroeslaideadeesta organización.

Anivelfamiliar,¿Sotograndetambiénesunlugar distintoenlatemporada?

Estados Unidos e Inglaterra son temporadas, por contexto, en las que estás muy metido en la dinámicadelacompetición.EnSotograndeseda lacircunstanciadeunirtodoesoyqueademáses lugar maravilloso para la familia. Hay sitios muy lindosparasaliracomer,disfrutardelaplaya,jugar al golf y pasar momentos distendidos también fueradelacanchadepolo.Esalgoquesedisfruta deunamaneraespecial.

A very demanding season?

Obviously, and even more so with the demands of Park Place. It always aims to have the best horses, the best tools, and when a team give you all that to win there is the responsibility to compete. You know that it is a sport and sometimes, the ball ends up outside the goal instead of inside; but winning is always the aim.

With that challenge, Park Place is coming to Sotogrande?

Park Place is always present to compete, it goes out to win. That doesn’t always happen, but that is the aim of this organisation.

On a family level, Sotogrande is also a different place during the season?

To provide some context, the United States and England are seasons where you are really immersedinthecompetitiondynamic.Sotogrande brings all of that together and it is also a wonderful place for family. There are really beautiful places to go out to eat, enjoy the beach, play golf and also have relaxed times away from the polo pitch. It is something that is especially enjoyed.

Ycogeraireparaunafuertetemporadaargentina.Cuéntanos un poco más sobre el planteamiento de ‘La Hache’ para la triple corona, junto a ‘Sapo’ Caset, Pablo Pieres y Fran Elizalde.

Con muchas ganas. Es un gran proyecto, un equipo con muchas ganas, con cuatro jugadores que pelean y que tratan de organizarse, con una mentalidad ganadora muy importanteyanivelparticular,esmuyespecialparamíjugar para ‘La Hache’, que es el club que fundé hace diez años y poder competir la Triple Corona. La clave es esta unión y el sueñodelucharporganarelAbierto.

¿EstámásabiertalaluchaporlaTripleCorona?

En ese sentido, cada vez está más parejo y equilibrado. Hoy sevenmásequiposconorganizaciónparaganartorneosen la Triple Corona y más abajo también, se ven más equipos con todo lo necesario para subir el nivel y alcanzar a los de arriba.Sevedesdehacedos/tresaños,conLaEnsenada,Cría LaDolfina,etc.Dóndeyasejuegadeigualaigual,nosepuede desestimaraninguno.

¿Ytuscomienzosenelpolo,Hilario?

Conelpolomeiniciéenelcampo,conmipadreymihermano. Mipadresiempresededicóaentrenarcaballosdepoloylos dosleayudábamos.Comenzamosacompetirenla‘Potrillos’ yotrostorneossimilares,con10/11añosyunpocomástarde, con 16, apareció la oportunidad de ir a Holanda a jugar en Centroeuropa unos meses, junto a Salva, ahí fue la primera ocasióndetomarelpolocomoalgoprofesional,quepodíamos dedicarnosaello;anteriormenteeraunaafición.Comenzamos aviajarytodofueevolucionandodeunamaneramuynatural.

¿Cómotediviertescuandoestásfueradelascanchas?

Me encanta pasar tiempo con la familia, obviamente, pero dónde más disfruto es cuando nos vamos todos al campo, estoyconmishijas,conloscaballosyestarenlanaturalezaes comomástranquilomeencuentroyfeliz.

And to pause for breath before an intense Argentine season. Tell us a little more about the approach of “La Hache” for the triple crown, alongside “Sapo” Caset, Pablo Pieres and Fran Elizalde.

Lots of enthusiasm. It is a great project, a team with lots of enthusiasm, with four players that battle and that try to organise themselves, with a very important winning mentality and on a personal level, it is very special for me to play for “La Hache”, which is the club I founded ten years ago and to be able to compete in the Triple Crown. The key is that union and the dream of battling to win the Open.

Is the battle for the Triple Crown very open?

It that regard, it is increasingly even and balanced. Now, there are more teams with the organisation to win tournaments in the Triple Crown, and lower down too, there are more teams with everything necessary to increase the level and reach those at the top. This has been noticeable for two/three years, with La Ensenada, Cría La Dolfina, etc. Where they are already playing on an equal footing, you cannot rule anyone out.

And what about your beginnings in polo, Hilario?

With polo, I got started in the countryside, with my father and brother. My father always worked training polo horses and the two of us helped him. We began competing in the “foals” category and other similar tournaments, aged 10/11 and a little later, aged 16, the opportunity emerged to go to Hilland to play in Central Europe for a few months, alongside Salva, that was the first chance to take polo as something profession, to devote ourselves to it; before that it was a hobby. We began travelling and everything gradually evolved very naturally.

How do you have fun away from the pitch?

I love spending time with family, of course, but where I have most fun is when we all go to the countryside, I am with my daughters, with horses, and being in nature is when I am most at peace and happiest.

Many thanks and good luck for this season, on our part we have done everything possible, for the last two seasons we have interviewed the successive champions of the Gold Cup (“Sapo” Caset in 2021 and “Jeta” Castagnola in 2022).
