The Maldives are considered one the three best places in the world for diving with their spectacular natural landscape, all with luxury and first-rate service to make it one of the most sought-after destinations on the planet.

Playas interminables de arena tan fina como la harina y tan blanca como la nieve, pero mucho más cálida; aguas que de lejos son turquesa o azul marino (nunca mejor dicho) y de cerca transparentes como cristal limpio; vegetación de palmeras, cocoteros, árboles del pan e higueras de Bengala que besan el mar y dan sombra a hibiscos y buganvillas; una fauna formada por mariposas, enormes murciélagos fruteros y pequeñas iguanas sobre la tierra y tiburones de distinto tipo y tamaño, mantas raya, curiosos napoleones, atunes, tortugas y millones de pequeños peces de infinitos colores bajo el agua. ¿No es esto el Paraíso?

No es ninguna novedad comparar Maldivas con el Paraíso. Una vieja leyenda dice que la mano invisible de algún dios tomó un pedacito del Edén para espolvorearlo sobre nuestro planeta, con tal acierto que cayó justamente en forma de una guirnalda formada por 1.200 islas sobre el océano Índico. Los hombres llamaron a ese archipiélago Maldivas, y no es casualidad que en sánscrito ese nombre signifique justamente guirnalda.

La descripción sin caer en superlativos, lo que es tarea complicada, dice que se trata de 26 atolones con una superficie total de solo 298 km2 (España ocupa más de 500.000), con 1200 islas, de las que solo unas 200 están habitadas, la mayoría con un solo resort en cada isla que para poder acoger a sus huéspedes han creado como enormes patas de araña decenas de villas sobre el agua, lo que es uno de sus principales atractivos. Es el país más plano del mundo que apenas supera el metro y medio en las cumbres más altas. Para compensar, tiene los mejores fondos marinos que hacen las delicias de los buceadores expertos y los aprendices de snorkel que se deciden a explorar sus profundidades, especialmente en Baa Atoll, declarado Reserva de la Biosfera por la UNESCO. Siempre rodeadas por una maravillosa laguna de tonos turquesa, se pueden encontrar algunas islas con largas lenguas de arena que se pierden en el mar o vistosos arrecifes de coral que se han convertido en hogar de millones de peces de colores y algunos de sus hermanos mayores, incluso el majestuoso tiburón ballena.

Endless beaches of sand as fine as flour and as white as snow, but much warmer; water which from afar is turquoise or marine blue (never more appropriate a term) and from close up as transparent as clean glass; vegetation of palm and coconut trees, breadfruit and banyan fig trees that kiss the sea and provide shade to hibiscus and bougainvillea; wildlife formed by butterflies, enormous fruit bats and small iguanas on land and different types and sizes of sharks, manta rays, inquisitive Napoleon fish, tuna, turtles and millions of small fish with infinite colours under the water. Isn’t this heaven?

It is nothing new to compare the Maldives to Heaven. An old legend says that the invisible hand of a god took a little piece of Eden to sprinkle it on our plant, with such success that it fell right in the shape of a garland formed by 1,200 islands in the Indian Ocean. The men called the archipelago the Maldives, and it is no coincidence that in Sanskrit the name means garland.

Always surrounded by a wonderful turquoise lagoon, it is possible to find some islands with long tongues of sand that disappear into the sea and stunning coral reefs that have become the home of millions of colourful fish and some of their older siblings, including the majestic whale shark.

Todo ello con el atractivo de que esos maravillosos fondos intactos están en general muy próximos a las playas por lo que incluso quienes bucean solo con tubo y sin bombonas también los pueden disfrutar. El sol del trópico, el agua transparente, las aguas cálidas y las extraordinarias formaciones de corales se estiman en más de 3.000 arrecifes de coral las hacen parecer un acuario gigante.

Aunque aparentemente el plan en cualquiera de las islas es similar: playa, buceo, tumbona, buena comida y bebida, alojamientossuntuosos,conciertosdebodu-beru,excursiones en dhoni al atardecer, visitas a islas desiertas o poblados de pescadores...larealidadesquemuchosdelosresortstratande ofrecer propuestas más originales. Por ejemplo ya hay varios de ellos que han instalado restaurantes bajo el agua pudiendo contemplar la abundante fauna marina mientras se disfruta uno de los 400 vinos diferentes que ofrecen, o alojarse en una villa sobre el agua y darse un chapuzón... bajando desde un tobogán en la habitación, dormir en una habitación burbuja en la playa, nadar junto al tiburón ballena, poder jugar al golf, al tenis o al pádel y luego relajarse en completísimos spas.
