Everyone Can Develop Lifelong Literacy Skills Many people think of the literacy skills we learn when we are young. Whether we need to strengthen our existing skills, or we wish to take it to the next level, there are ways we can continue to develop literacy skills throughout life. One way to develop higher-level language skills is to learn a new language. The public library offers a wonderful learning tool, Mango Languages, available for free with your library card. Mango Languages offers dozens of languages to learn in fun, colorful, and interactive ways, including English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). You can create an account to track your progress. You can use the online version or the app version, and it’s easy to get started at HCPLC.org/OnlineClasses. If you or someone you know would like to develop knowledge and skills often needed in life, there is also the public library’s online resource Worldbook Lifeskills 101. This resource covers personal finances, obtaining your first place, applying and interviewing for jobs, and completing routine maintenance around the house. All lessons here are easily readable for adults with developing literacy skills who need an extra insight into the daily demands of life.
? u Know o Y d i D
There is free tutoring available to adults with under-developed reading skills and English for Speakers of other Languages (ESOL) provided by volunteers from the Hillsborough Literacy Council (HLC). HLC can meet with adults who need basic literacy skills or survival English in any library branch location and online. Likewise, they say that the best way to learn is to teach, so we encourage anyone over 18 to consider becoming a literacy volunteer. If you or someone you know needs HLC services or would like to volunteer, please contact the HLC at 813-273-3650 or email AdultLiteracy@HCFLgov.net.
