to the online edition of the Enrichment Team’s Beacon Magazine.
This issue of the Beacon will take a look back at 10 years of Enrichment Activities (What were you doing 10 years ago?), what we’ve been up to, some ideas about upcoming activities, 14-16 College and Studio School activities, Equality, Diversity & Citizenship celebrations, Sports Relief mile and lots, lots more! Finally we would like to welcome Aaron Tyson to the team. Aaron has joined the team recently and you will certainly see him around the site in the team colours in the near future. Come and talk to any of the team when you see them around and about to find out more about the activities we can provide,
or what you’d like to see us doing in the future. The team consists of: Garry, Dave, Stacey, Hayley, Richard, Tom, Hayley and Aaron on the Hull and Goole sites. Jo and Hettie are our team members at the Harrogate and Goole sites.

This year Hull College Group Student Services Enrichment Team are celebrating a decade of Enrichment to literally thousands of students - past and present. Yes, it is ten years since the team first put on those distinctive uniforms making them instantly recognisable to students (and staff) everywhere across campus. Originally formed as Club 1618, how times have changed; we now provide enrichment to students from age 14 with no upper age limit, and right across all college main sites, including of course Goole and Harrogate campuses, as well as the satellite sites in Hull such as Park St, KC Stadium Learning Zone, and Cannon St. We also must mention our very successful provision to students at Sirius Academy, Energy League (now HCUK 14-16 College) and the Studio School which have been developed alongside this new and exciting provision. This in turn has demonstrated the team’s flexibility, experience, and ability to adapt to new and changing times.
Originally formed on a trial basis as a pilot to support student attendance and retention and add value to our curriculum offer, student services enrichment has gone from strength to strength, embracing an incredibly diverse range of activities and events over the years, including co-ordinating the common rooms, sports such as football, exercise classes and gym, arts and crafts, gaming, talent competitions, and various trips locally, regionally and nationally such as exhibitions, clothes show, shopping trips, etc. Increasingly our services, as well as responding to student feedback and retaining elements of fun and adventure, also support key student outcomes such as the progression passport and employability seal. A number of team members have successfully moved on to pastures new taking their skills and experience to new roles both inside the Group and externally. Garry Hadley and Dave Bennett are the longest serving members of the team, racking up 10 years each, though of course you wouldn’t know it to look at them! The team, with an incredible and diverse range of skills and experience, now consists of the 9 members with 7 based at Hull College providing a service to Hull and Goole students and 2 team members based at the Harrogate campus. The team, however, works flexibly and supports enrichment delivery across all the sites.

Garry Hadley is the longest member of the Enrichment team. He says: “I have seen many changes over the years. We have evolved immensely and with the addition of many skilled, enthusiastic and efficient colleagues, we are able to offer a more diverse professional service. Is been a roller-coaster of a journey that has seen us ascend from a dusty old cupboard to award winners. We have successfully made a positive impact on many learners’ lives over the years, and our vision is to continue to do so as we adapt to keep up with the times.” Dave Bennett said: “I have been a part of the Enrichment Team for 10 years and can say with my hand on my heart that this is the best job in the world. Where else would I get to take part in some of the fantastic trips and events, from London to Scarborough and from Blackpool to Spurn Point? I have been all over the country for the Group, including to dozens of theme parks and great and unique places. The Enrichment Team have abseiled off the Hull College roof, Zip-lined through forests, watched a fun day end in a huge firework display on Blackpool beach and walked the hallowed turf of the big 4 in the Premier League. We have watched Hull City take on the country and win at Wembley in the play-offs for promotion. We have taken part in some college shows and celebrations that have rocked the City, for example the Pink Tribute Act, and also stood in respectful silence with all our friends on Remembrance Day.” Sue Winterton, the Group Team Leader, is proud of the Team’s achievements and especially how the services are now rolled-out and integrated across all three sites: Hull, Goole and Harrogate. “From the initial Club 16-18 origins, we now provide enrichment for all ages from 14 years upwards and across all the group’s sites in Hull, Goole and Harrogate. We are even involved with our partner Academy Sirius, whose choir have joined in and sung at some of our Carol Concerts. We have also recently gained a new team member.”
Let’s let him introduce himself: “Hi everyone I’m Aaron and I’m the newest member of the enrichment team. I have been working for the college for 7 years now in a number of different roles. I have been a fitness instructor and worked in Scholars Gym and was been heavily involved in running of the business. Alongside this I have worked as a Learning Advisor in the SPSTT department. I have a keen interest in sports and I’m looking forward to bringing plenty of sporting activities to the team. Come have a chat with me when you see me.” Student Services Manager David Greenway said, “It’s always a pleasure to look back at the Enrichment Team’s achievements, and rightly so as there have been many, and so much to be proud of. They have supported and inspired many students over the years, and many of these students have very fond memories of their times spent on Enrichment activities and events, or socialising in the common rooms. However, as a service we also want to continue looking ahead to the future and how we shape our services, and meet the needs of our increasingly diverse student population. These are exciting times and we want to help shape them and ensure we remain as relevant today as it was 10 years ago”.

This is a very exciting year for both the Enrichment Team and also Hull College Group, as we became one of only seven colleges that were able to welcome our new 14-16 College students! The team provide the 14-16 college at both Hull College and Goole sites with enrichment activities. The students kick start the day in breakfast club. We also provide enrichment over the lunch period where we have a number of pool tournaments as well as gaming sessions (Xbox, Wii, etc.), Arts and Crafts, Professional Nail Art plus much more. This will then be followed by an after school club where the students can unwind after their day at college by having a few games of pool or competing against one another on the games consoles. (Well they can do homework if the really want to!)
Once again the Enrichment Team will be providing our services across at Studio School which is sponsored by the Hull College Group. The school is aimed at students between the ages of 14-17 who are looking to pursue a career in business and enterprise. Last year our enrichment activities were really successful and the students thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent over there with them providing them with such activities as the gaming (Wii, Xbox, etc.), crafts, quizzes and the school also attended our two football tournaments which we organised for Health week and Equality & Diversity week. A huge bonus for our enrichment activities is that we now have a pool table within the school, which gives the students even more choice over their dinner time! The Team would like to wish all students and staff from both HCUK 16-16 College and Studio School our best wishes for the academic year and also all the best in their future with the college.
Sirius Academy The enrichment team run some activities at Sirius Academy, the most popular of which is Nail Art and the Team would like to thank Laura, Hollie & Serena for all all their hard work. The students come over to Sirius once a week to staff the nail art club, using their skill and expertise they create fabulous nail art on the students who attend. It’s so popular they’re now looking for a bigger room!
A snapshot of what’s happened so far this year
Pink Party
The Enrichment Team worked alongside the Student Union in order to throw a Pink Party to raise awareness and also money for Breast Cancer Care. The party helped to raise £228.10 for the charity! At Hull College events included a pink tombola, raffle, nail enamelling courtesy of the beauty students, pink food, pink cocktails and theatrical makeup courtesy of our students and there was plenty of pink clothing on show! Thanks goes to the Level 3 Hair and Beauty students who helped us raise money on the day by painting everyone’s nails and face painting. Another thank you goes to Carolyn Waudby who along with her students baked a number of buns and sold them on the day to help raise money. One final thanks goes to the members of staff who donated a number of fantastic tombola prices, which one again helped to raise more money for the charity. This was an absolutely brilliant day, everyone enjoyed themselves along with some very happy students winning some fabulous prizes. Well done everyone and thank you to everyone who participated!
Remembrance Day On Monday 11th November the Enrichment Team provided a Remembrance Day Service at the Queens Gardens site which ran from 10.45am. This service took place outside the William Wilberforce statue at the front of the college. The order of service was read by Hull College Group’s Chief Operating Officer Lee Probert. This was accompanied by a moving rendition of Reveille by Jan Davidson with her bugle. The Team would like to send our thanks to both Lee and Jan for their wonderful contribution to the service. The service was also facilitated at Harrogate, Goole and Park Street with amazing respect shown by all who attended. There are plans starting to form now for next year’s big event when it is the 100th Anniversary of the start of World War One. Please get in touch if you would like to get involved in any way. There was an amazing turn out for all the services and the Team would like to take this opportunity to thank all the students and staff that turned out and helped to contribute to a moving tribute to our fallen heroes, as the full service and also the two minute silence was respected throughout.
Guide Dogs Demonstration
To coincide with Mental Health Awareness Day, the Enrichment Team organised for a Guide Dogs Trust demonstration to come into college for students at the college to see how they are trained. The demonstration took place in the Chester’s Reception, as the weather outside was too poor for the dogs to be able to perform. The lead demonstrators for the Guide Dogs Trust set out an obstacle course for the dogs to guide them around without any help which the dogs did successfully from start to finish. Students were able to have an insight into how these magnificent guide dogs perform on a daily basis which allowed them to have a greater appreciation for the work they do. The students who attended were allowed to have pictures and interact with the dogs after the demonstrations had taken place which they thoroughly enjoyed, as well as the free tea, coffee and biscuits!
Health & Wellbeing week
The TOM foundation Road Safety event was organised by Judi and her team and was a great success in Health & Well being week. Another success in this week was the cycling velodrome event which challenged you to ‘Race around the interactive Pedal Powered Velodrome’ with the first one over the line in the fastest time judged as the winner. Well done to Joel and Shannon - the eventual winners.

Come along for the announcement of the results of this competition, the Get Moving Goole poster competition (the posters are currently being printed up from the winning designs) and also the Progression week quiz, whose winner is based at Goole. Well done Goole! - Who also succeeded in sending one of their students on a funded trip to Auschwitz as part of Holocaust Memorial Day events These great events and trips also took place at Goole during the last term;
Christmas Service @ Harrogate
Harrogate College’s first ever Christmas Service took place in the run up to Christmas and was hailed a great success. The service was organised by The Enrichment Team with the help of Reverend Helen Bailey, and told the traditional Christmas story with some light hearted celebration thrown in for an enjoyable service for all! Acts included a Christmas Medley & a duet from Performing Arts students, a Christmas song & video complied by Tutor Peter Beck & his band and Student Union VP Rebekah Lleweyn’s take on funny Christmas traditions around the world. With mince pies baked by the Catering students on offer to attract the crowds, the service ran smoothly and Julie Stephenson commented ‘It’s the start of a new tradition!’ Rev. Helen Bailey said ‘It’s a fantastic thing to be a part of, and a lovely way to finish the term and remember the real Christmas story’. The Enrichment Team would like to thank all staff, students and visitors for their support in making this event a success, and are looking forward to bigger and better things in 2014
Macmillan Coffee Morning The Enrichment Team at Hull ran an excellent Macmillan Coffee Morning alongside the Student Union. This took place in the HE Centre at the Queens Gardens site, where students and staff could make a small donation to the charity in order to receive a coffee or tea of their choice alongside a number of cookies, biscuits and doughnuts. It was a great event for a great cause and monies raised will go towards helping the charity. The Enrichment Team at Harrogate also held a successful Macmillan Coffee Morning last week as part of the nationwide event. The team offered home cooked goodies, hot drinks and a sweepstake for a small donation to staff and students. The event, which was held over two days, raised over £70 for the charity. This will be donated in person to Macmillan when a representative visits the college this week to plan more fundraising events. Well done and thank you to everyone who participated.
Ice Skating Trip Students from Harrogate enjoyed a fun day out in Leeds seeing the sights, ice skating and tackling a giant ice slide. The Enrichment Team organised the annual trip to the Ice Cube situated in Millennium Square. The students demonstrated impeccable behaviour and it’s safe to say, a mixture of talent on the ice! The falls were spectacular, but in true grit everyone got up and carried on. Student Antony Fulford commented ‘It was a great laugh and I’d definitely be up for it again .’ The Enrichment Team praised the student’s behaviour and look forward to the next trip as the weather warms up, which is Paintballing..
Harrogate Rugby Team Harrogate College’s new Rugby Team took part in their first two tournaments in the run up to Christmas. The team, set up by The Enrichment Team at the request of the students have only been training since September but showed fantastic sportsmanship and great potential. The team’s performance impressed RFU coaches and they have been invited back next month for another tournament. Joinery student Kurt De Vos said ‘I love it - the team gets on well and the coaches are great’. The Enrichment Team thanked the RFU for their generosity and dedication to establishing the rugby team at Harrogate College. Students and staff a like can’t wait for future games, and of course the traditional rugby dinner afterwards (sausage & beans!).
Progression Road Show There were a number of different events put on during the week which included such things as Enterprise Pathway, Employability Information Burst, Careers Wall, Skills and Careers exercise and also information on how students could land themselves an apprenticeship. This was a very popular road show with lots of positive feedback for the different events, especially the ‘Which hat will you wear?’ (organised by the IAG teams at each site) also the mock interview panel sessions and the Progression Information burst sessions. Goole was the first of the three events and eventually came out with the prize for the week’s quiz, which will be awarded on April 3rd at their prize giving event. Some mock interviews were rolled over to the following week, due to their popularity and this was appreciated by the students involved. The same format was run at Queen’s Gardens on Wednesday and these events were really well received with both students and tutors as it opened a lot of the students’ eyes as to the variety of options that are open to them once they complete their courses. The progression week road show arrived in Harrogate on the Thursday with a host of workshops and activities for the students to explore their options for life after College. Students had the opportunity to test their readiness for employment with CV clinics and mock interviews which provided essential feedback. The Enrichment team ran ‘Information Burst Sessions’ which followed a speed dating format and gave the students 5 minutes with experts on several potential pathways like apprenticeships and starting up their own business. Students across all schools attended the event and found it ‘opened their eyes to what was available to them after college, and the fact help is available in college that students didn’t know about.’ Other events included ‘Dressing for Success’ video screenings which informed students of the importance of personal presentation and a fun career & skills workshop with IAG Staff. The week engaged around 130 students at Harrogate, which is fantastic seeing it’s the first week of this kind. Director of Student Services Teresa Chalmers praised the enthusiasm shown across all three sites and looks forward to this becoming a regular event on the calendar.

? p u g in m o c s ’ t a h W Money Skills weeks at all sites Coming soon for Money Skills weeks 31st March to the Easter break: Hints and Tips to save you Money. We never have enough money for everything so we’ve decided to start collecting all your best money saving hints and tips so we can share them with everyone in college, with the best being put into a list through our Enrichment Team facebook page and we’ll also put it on Moodle for you. The themes we will put together are: - Beauty & Fashion - Leisure activities - Cheap Holidays You will be able to vote for the ones you think the most useful. You can cut them out of newspapers or magazines, they could be Granny’s favourite tips or you can use your own. Let’s get saving some money! Bring them along to one of the team or send them to swinterton@hull-college.ac.uk and we’ll do the rest! Happy collecting! There will be lots of other activities going on during these two weeks - so keep looking at our facebook page and keep up to date with all our activities.
Equality, Diversity & Citizenship Week at all sites The Enrichment Team are going to be challenging students during that week to undertake random acts of kindness this could be ‘Make an appointment to donate blood,’ ‘Tell a close friend or family member that you love them,’ ‘Donate a can of food to a local food bank,’ or ‘open a door for someone’. We will be handing out cards stating a random act, which we hope you will succeed in completing during that week. We would like a photo of you or a selfie taken during the act of kindness so we can create a collage of kindness. If you want to get involved either by suggesting to us some acts of kindness or want you and your mates to given some cards so you can be involved - please get in touch.
FIFA 14 Competitions We will be holding FIFA 14 competitive matches across all sites after half term. This will give students chance to compete against all their college friends in competitive matches on FIFA. All results will be recorded and put into league tables for each site. Winners of these leagues will then compete against other college sites in a world cup finals tournament. To join in simply come to a FIFA 14 session and join in.
Sports Relief Mile We are looking at holding a Sport Relief mile in the interior of Queens Gardens. This will consist of walking, hopping, running or jogging around Queens Gardens and round the fountain twice for Sports Relief. It will cost ÂŁ1 to enter and all entry fees must be paid before the event. We aim to get as many people as possible taking part so come join in! Enjoy dressing up? Well why not come in fancy dress? Do your thing!
Scholars Gym We are also starting Gym sessions for all students in March. We will be putting on these sessions on Wednesdays 9.30am till 11.30am and Thursdays 5.30pm till 7.30pm. Scholars Gym is situated in the impressive Learning Zone at the Kingston Communications Stadium, Scholars offers you a well-equipped and air-conditioned fitness and health facility. Scholars Gym provides top of the range cardiovascular and resistance equipment supplied by Olympic branded Technogym. Experienced and dedicated staff will be on hand to offer assistance to help achieve a healthier life style by developing personal exercise programmes. Mini World Cup in Equality, Diversity and Citizenship Celebration week
This year we will be hosting this at Goole College with three 5-a-side teams from each site competing for the honour of getting their team name on the perpetual trophy for the year. Contact Garry Hadley or Aaron Tyson if you want to be involved. There will only be a few places up for grabs so get in on this quickly if you want to there!
Upcoming events @ Harrogate - Yorkshire Warrior - a team from the college will be taking on the 10 mile, 30 obstacle gruelling assault course in a bid to raise money for charity.
