elcome to the second edition of our 14-16 College Newsletter.

Since January, students have made improved rates of progress as we move towards GCSE Science exams and Work Experience in July. A range of trips and visits have been provided to all students to enrich their lives and learning at the College and parents and carers continue to give us feedback about how our students are getting on, which we value and use to improve our offer. Student Summary Reports will be posted to you soon, followed up by Parents’ Evening and our full subject reports in June. Parents are urged to get in touch as soon as possible if there are any issues arising from work at the 14-16 College that you would like to discuss.

I hope you have had the opportunity to read our recently published Ofsted report, which can be found on the Ofsted website under Hull College. The Ofsted Report details the great progress we have all made so far and confirms our own views about further improvements to be made. Once again, we thank you for your continued support and look forward to a very positive summer term ahead.

Young Writers

The Power of Poetry Competition Students from the 14-16 College Goole site recently entered the Young Writers’ Power of Poetry competition which provides the opportunity for the successful students to have their work published in a special anthology. The judges selected entries for publication based on perception, imagination, expression and creative use of language and two of our students were successful - Oliwia Wantoch-Rekowska and Megan Foster. Further prizes for this competition include £1,000 for first place and 4 x £250 cash prizes for the best schools. Students also have the chance to be picked as one of 12 finalists across the UK and could win and iPad. Oliwia and Megan’s work will appear in ‘The Power of Poetry – Poems From The North East’ and will be kept at the British Library and further libraries across the UK and Republic of Ireland. Congratulations to both 14-16 College students - winning this competition is a great accolade for them and the College!

Premier Night Out! Earlier this year our home team, Hull City AFC, provided the 14-16 College with 25 reduced price tickets for the evening home match against Southampton on the 11th February. The tickets were allocated to students as part of a team building event in the College’s social calendar. The students had a fantastic time and behaved impeccably, an absolute credit to the College. Student Ellen Boughen, who attended on the night, wrote a short review of the match: “My experience at the KC stadium was great, watching Hull City playing against Southampton. I was very lucky to be taken there along with my friends as a school trip. When we arrived the

stadium was packed full of fans, the atmosphere was roaring with music and people singing their football teams songs. This was not the first time I had been, but that did not affect how much I or everyone else enjoyed it. My friends and also the college staff were sat in the North stand and we had a brilliant view. Next to us were at least 1000 Southampton fans. Before the match started we were also able to watch the teams train and get warmed up for the match. Unfortunately though, the score was 1/0 to Southampton.”

Student Profile - Mario Sequeira Mario Sequeira joined the HCUK 14-16 College from Endeavour High School in September 2013 and quickly proved himself to be an outgoing, motivated and dedicated student. Mario is currently enjoying his academic classes as well as his vocational options. Mario is studying Catering as one of his Yr10 options and has recently been working in the College’s training restaurant, Charlotte’s, gaining experience with real customers to build customer service and food preparation skills. Mario’s real passion, however, lies in the Performing Arts, which he is studying as his main two-year vocational specialism. The 12th February saw the first production of Miami Hustlers, a play written, directed and produced by Mario. It was widely advertised around the college and on BBC Radio Humberside. Mario even spoke on air to Radio Humberside’s own David Burns about his acting aspirations and how the

14-16 College has provided him with more opportunities and freedom to follow his dreams: I have always been interested in acting, ever since I was young and my goal is to become a professional actor. The facilities and tutors at Hull College and the theatre in the Horncastle Building have been very helpful and I now get to run a small theatre company (Future Productionz) with the help of the 14-16 College. We even have our own website. The production was well attended and supported by College staff, including attendance from the Hull College Group Chief Executive and Mario’s College mentor, Gary Warke. Mario is currently working on a spoof of film ‘The Godfather’ called ‘The God Daddy’ which he aims to put into production as his next project and he is also trying to get involved in acting workshops for local primary schools. Have a look at the Future Productionz website here: http:// futureproductionztheatre.webs.com/ All staff and students wish Mario future success with Future Productionz.

Educational Visit to The Deep In April, our students had the opportunity to visit The Deep for an educational visit, designed to enrich and develop their analytical abilities. The educational workshops were delivered by The Deep’s team of experienced in-house teachers. In the maths workshop, students followed aquarist, James, through his working day at The Deep. The students used their maths skills to solve some of the reallife problems faced by marine biologists. Calculations included volumes of water, medication for new fish, salt needed to recreate the marine environment and time needed to allow temperatures to rise. The science workshop focused on mankind’s impact on the oceans over time, specifically the problems caused by increasing levels of CO2, as well as a presentation and practical experiments to explain ocean acidification. In addition to the educational focus of the day, the students were also able to explore The Deep and see the new penguins, a productive and fun day out for everyone!

Refugee Boy at Hull Truck In February, our students went to see Refugee Boy at the Hull Truck Theatre. The play brings together the work of two of the UK’s most prolific and revered poets, Benjamin Zephaniah and Lemn Sissay, in a heart-breaking and hilarious production that uses creativity to celebrate diversity, to bring people together, share stories and dispel myths & prejudices and helps to cement the principles and morals we embed in our education at the 14-16 College.

Upcoming activities War Horse Trip Our Group 5 English students will be going on a visit to the Bradford theatre on 2nd June to watch The War Horse play.
