Year 11 Awards 2015 Hosted by Viking FM’s Steve Jordan, the HCUK 14-16 College 2015 Leavers Awards ceremony celebrated the first cohort of 16 year olds who have left Hull and Goole Colleges after two years of GCSE and vocational study; the majority of only 100 pupils in the country to achieve these qualifications in a full-time college setting. Graham Towse, Hull College Principal said: “Our awards ceremony was a fantastic event and provided the Group with the opportunity to congratulate our first cohort of 14-16 year olds who have made the most of an exciting college experience with us. “We are very proud to be one of only a few colleges in the country to enroll 14 to 16 year olds and be at

the forefront of such a cutting edge provision. “Our students have all achieved something really special and we look forward to continuing our success with the next 14-16 cohorts.” Some of the students who shone at the ceremony included Ellen Beckett, who won the Engineering Star Award for her focus, dedication, investigation and drive. Ellen has secured an Engineering apprenticeship at Hull-based company Kintech – becoming the first female in the company’s 150 year history to work on the shop floor. Liam Bailey won the Construction Star Award on account of his outstanding effort and commitment to his course, reflected in his progression to an electrical

installation apprenticeship. Another pupil progressing to an apprenticeship is Tamara Seabrook who is embarking on a Procurement and Business Administrator apprenticeship with Reckitt Benckiser. Mario Sequiera won the Performing Arts Star Award for his dedication and enterprising skills and ability. Mario set up his own production company in year 11 and ran a weekly club in College to practice his art and produce a final performance. Liam Brodie was awarded the overall Star Student of the 14-16 College – Class of 2015. Liam came to Hull’s 14-16 College to gain stability in his education and to start his vocational pathways early.

He received his award on account of his dedication, teamwork and support and his positive and reflective attitude to learning in everything he did. Liam is now studying A Levels. Suzanna May, Head of 14-16 College said: “The students at the 14-16 College had a chance to try out vocational pathways and focus on their career choices early. “The focus on the development of employability skills such as punctuality, teamwork, drive and resilience has supported the students to gain some amazing apprenticeship opportunities. We wish all the stars of the 14-16 College the best of luck for the journey ahead of them at post 16.”

End of year success for 14-16 students This summer saw the College’s first cohort of 14-16 students celebrate their GCSE results. Here are some of our students’ successes.

Ellen Ellen has worked remarkably hard in preparation for her exams and has done herself proud, rising 3 levels of progress to achieve Cs in English, Science and Film Studies, as well as a Distinction in IT Skills and a Pass in Business. She gained a Pass in Engineering and has been accepted onto the apprenticeship programme with HCUK Training and is on track for her dream Engineering career. “Not in a million years did I expect a C in Science! I’m stunned and shocked by my results and I can’t believe how well I’ve done. I really changed when I came to the 14-16 College, I really knuckled down and worked hard. I’m so pleased!”

Lydia & Jack Lydia and Jack both achieved 3 Cs in English Literature, English Language & Science and D in Maths and were thrilled with their grades, allowing them to study Applied Science and A Levels in Sociology, Psychology and Biology. Lydia applied to the 14-16 College after a recommendation from Jack and enrolled with us after a period of home schooling and says “I was really worried I wasn’t going to pass but I got a C in English Language AND Literature! I’m also really pleased we’ve both done well in our vocational courses. One of the best things I have ever done is come to the 14- 16 College full time!” Jack joined the College as a shy, quiet student and the last 2 years have seen him overcome some significant personal issues to become a confident and hard-working young man with great prospects. Jack says “I’m really proud of my overall results, if I hadn’t moved to the College there is no way I would have achieved this. I wouldn’t have been successful if I had stayed at school.”

Luke Luke has achieved an impressive array of results, allowing him to progress on to his first choice. Bs & Cs across Maths, English & Science, as well as Passes in his vocational areas of Art & Hospitality and a Distinction* in IT Skills have meant Luke can now study A Levels in Business, Maths, English Language and IT. Big congratulations to Luke! “I’m most proud of my Maths grade B as when I first joined I was working at D/C level. I can finally feel the weight lifted off my shoulders knowing that I’ve passed and that I’ve achieved more than enough to progress in September.”

Mario Star student, Mario, achieved great things with the 14-16 College, including Bs in English Language & Literature and a ‘magnifique’ grade A in French! An active performer, Mario joined us originally to study his passion, Performing Arts, where he achieved a Distinction* at Level 2 and started his own theatre production company. Since then he has passed Art and gained a Distinction* in his ECDL IT Application Skills. Congratulations to Mario for gaining a place on the Level 3 Business Diploma at Hull College! “I am particularly proud of my A in French and really happy that I’ve got the grades to progress onto a high level course. I’m looking forward to starting my Business course in September.”

Jordan Jordan didn’t expect to do so well in his exams so was understandably thrilled when he saw his C grade in Maths, his Pass in Construction and his Distinction* in IT. His grades and his hands-on practical skills gave him what he needed to be accepted onto a Fabrication & Welding apprenticeship. “I am really pleased about my grades – the hard work I put in really paid off and my results were better than expected. I’ve got the results I needed to for my next steps and I’m currently on an apprenticeship trial at MH Industrial. I wouldn’t have got these grades in school, I’m so glad I moved to the 14-16 College.”

Golden Apple Success for the 14-16 College

On Thursday 3rd December, the Hull Daily Mail held its second Golden Apple Awards at the Willerby Manor Hotel, to celebrate education across our region. The School of Construction had an excellent night - winning in two of the nine categories. The School won the Community Award for the work it does in local schools through the 14–16 Job Club; an initiative set up to develop 14-16 construction students’ employability skills and readiness for work through live community projects in schools across Yorkshire & the Humber.

This is the second year that the School of Construction has won awards at this event; in 2014, 14-16 College Construction tutor, Darren Storrer, was named Teacher of the Year and student Connor Cutsforth took Apprentice of the Year. The night was a great success and showcased the work that both staff and students alike put into courses and their studies at the college.

Post 16 Student Ryan Gagg also won Apprentice of the Year. Ryan is currently completing his Level 3 in Electrical Studies and an apprenticeship with KWL.

Hull Global Entrepreneurship Week

November 2015 saw nine 1416 students attend the Global Entrepreneurship Week Secondary School competitions at The Guildhall. Eighteen teams took part from schools across the city and had the opportunity to meet some young inspirational entrepreneurs. The morning task consisted of building a bridge out of 4 newspapers and a roll of tape, the bridge had to be high enough for a football to roll underneath it, and sturdy enough for a large box of books to balance on top of it for 10 seconds. Only 3 Schools managed to successfully complete the task with our students being one of those teams! In the afternoon students had to be creative and develop a media wall

8

for 20 classrooms in a new school and stick within a £60,000 budget, our students were shortlisted (top 6) to pitch our idea to the judges in front of 180+ students. Overall our students came 3rd out of 18 Schools and were awarded £150 to be shared between the students! The 14-16 College team were: • Lucy Crossland • Katherine Whincup • Lloyd Jackson • Lauren Bibby • Sadek Ahmed • Terry Johnson • Ashley Bamford • Ben Selway
