Training the Airways, Next Generation The next generation of aircraft cabin crew are being trained at the Learning Zone by the Travel and Tourism department. The course is a Level 2 Cabin Crew qualification and is being run as a night class in the purpose built crew room at the KC Stadium. The course is running one night a week for one year and sees the students studying six units such as: Airline Health, Safety and Security, Aircraft Emergency Situations and Cabin Crew Service. The course is the only one in the region currently being offered at an FE College.

All this is being done by qualified in-house tutors within the Sports, Public Services Travel and Tourism (SPSTT) school.
Course leader and Tutor Claire Davison, who put the course together, said it has been put in place due to a demand from past and present students who wanted a career as cabin crew and couldn’t access the first step in their training.

New exhibition opens this week HSAD is pleased to announce ENERGIES re-united, a joint exhibition of paintings, prints and drawings by Geoff Keen and Andi Dakin. All are welcome to come and view the exhibition. Hull School of Art & Design Foyer, Wilberforce Drive, Hull HU1 3DG Exhibition runs from 6-28 February Open to General Public: Monday – Friday, 10am4pm. Both men are Artists with a long experience of exhibiting and are members of Kingston Art Group and are involved in teaching. Andi Dakin says: “Astronomical photography and gazing up into the starry night sky has stimulated my interest in celestial energies and forms. I have made Artwork in response to similar qualities in subaquatic life forms and micro-organisms. I work on highly polished zinc plates, using aquatint, shellac, methylated spirit and nitric acid. “A corrosive alchemy, acid, is repeatedly poured onto the plate; areas of aquatint are removed and reinstated, generating subtle and extreme textural and tonal variations. The prints taken from the plates have a sense of space and light, time and movement; they speculate on a history of evolving relationships between solids, voids and passages of varied and indeterminate density. “The chemical process connects with the drama of galaxies being born, the implosions of stars, the dynamism of heavenly bodies and the immeasurable energies of force, heat and light. “They are micro-emulations of fragments of the beginnings of everything.” Geoff Keen has been making abstract paintings for more than twenty five years. They were inspired initially by some deconstructed drawings of derelict buildings and stain glass window. Exploring painterly ideas allows him the freedom to explore new ideas and experiment with shape form and colour. The rhythmic gestures and brush strokes are used in a very direct way, questioning value and judgements and reflecting on the influence of other art forms from outsider art to children‘s scribbles. He says: “Resolution is sought within the painting or drawing itself, each gesture is layered against another, seeking to generate interesting and stimulating relationships with the space in the painting. Each gesture is the result of rehearsed sequences of movement. Seeking a moment of inspiration to separate it from the mundane or ordinary and make it exceptional.”

Students experience political debate first-hand Welding students took a break from the workshop to experience a live council debate at Hull City Hall. The group visited the council chamber ahead of a communication skills element to their course, which involved delivering a presentation to their class and speaking about themselves for five minutes. The course element was geared toward providing the students with employability skills. The students observed the debate, before meeting Cllr John Black, portfolio holder for development, where they discussed future job prospects in the city. He also took feedback from the students on their experience in the chamber.
Core Foundation Catering visit to Wings Restaurant Core Foundation Catering visited Wings last week to sample their International Cuisine. For some members of the group this was their first experience of eating out, so the informal buffet style was a good way to introduce them to a restaurant environment. The group displayed good manners and chatted informally over a long and tasty lunch. They sampled Indian, Thai, Italian and Chinese foods. Some students tried Sushi for the first time. The students were able to observe people at work in a range of Hospitality and Catering roles, from reception staff to chefs at ‘live’ cooking stations.
A good time was had by all!
Visit for art students Fine Art staff and students are set to participate in the Whitechapel East Coast Fellowship Symposium, curated by Helen Kaplinsky. Four students participating are and presenting research in the form of work made in response to material from the HTBA archive by Fran Cottell. This symposium is also in collaboration with students from the Goldsmiths MA in Curating course.
Employability event a success The College welcomed more than 500 visitors this week, for an employability event hosted in association with Job Centre Plus (JCP). A number of College staff were involved in the event, which ran smoothly and proved beneficial for many of those who had been referred by JCP. Those invited were all young unemployed people, aged 16-24. Hosted in the Horncastle building on Wednesday Feb 5, from 10am to 3pm, staff across a number of departments helped set up for the event, hosted the guests and ran the taster sessions – these were focused on four key employment sectors – care, hospitality, business, and renewables – and were designed to give the invitees an idea of what the different sectors involve. Overall, the day was a real success and was attended by local media – both BBC Radio Humberside and BBC Look North. Thank you to all staff who played a role in organisation and delivery.

Help raise awareness of Student Voice sessions Tutors are asked to ensure their part-time students are aware of drop-in seswsions where they will have the opportunity to meet Lizann Lowson (Interim Director of Student Services) in an informal setting. This is their opportunity to speak to the Interim Director of Student Services and discuss any issues (positive or negative) that they may have about the College.

Warm clothing appeal Could you help some of the poorest people in Hull keep warm? People have been urged to donate for coats and jackets for destitute men, women and children, and a collection is taking place within the college. Search your wardrobe – do you have any warm clothing that you no longer wear? Just one fleece or jacket would help. We are collecting clean, warm clothing in good condition for the Red Cross in Hull and Open Door. If you can help, please drop off donated items in QG 311. Community Safety Conference The college is to host a Community Safety Conference next week. The event will be hosted by The Faculty of Business and Science in association with the Hull Community Safety Partnership on Thursday February 13. Quest Speakers are the Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside Matthew Grove and Humberside Police Chief Inspector Iain Dixon. The aim of the lecture presentations is to apply the theory of community safety to the strategy and practice of the Police. Discussion of the Police and Crime Plan and its wider implications to the city of Hull will be followed by an overview of violent crime in Hull; how it is recorded; explanation of targets; how crime is managed and strategies for prevention. It will be held in The Riverside Theatre, Horncastle Building, 9.45am for 10am start and concluding at 12.15pm. This event is free and open to Hull College staff, students and the general public. Open event tomorrow A final reminder that the College’s first open day of the new year will be held on Saturday February 8, from 10am to 2pm, across all three College sites – Hull, Harrogate and Goole. The event will involve staff across a wide range of departments, is an ideal opportunity for potential students to discover our courses, speak to staff and see our facilities. Current Year 9 pupils and their parents or guardians will also be able to talk to us about the HCUK 14-16 College. At Hull, all College sites will be open throughout the day, including Park Street, Canon Street and Queen’s Gardens, and free minibus between the locations will be operating all day. Staff at all three sites are thanked in advance for their participation and support.
Still time to vote HSAD students to success There’s still time to help two Textile students win a prestigious design competition, run by sofa.com. Jodie Biglin (B.A.) and Paige Cavill (FdA) created their own fabric designs, before digitally uploading them so they could be envisioned as finished pieces of furniture. The winner will be chosen on the basis of the number of votes per design received – please show your support by following the link and voting for the girls. Only 15 finalists selected nationally so fingers crossed we are in with a good chance of a prize winner. They are currently accruing a high number of votes.
