Summer of Success for Hull College Group A message from Hull College Group Chief Executive Gary Warke As we enter a new academic year, we have an opportunity to reflect on some fantastic successes across the Hull College Group over the summer.

Siemens awa training cont

One of our biggest announcements was that of Siemens awarding a key contract, worth around £1million, to Hull College Group to develop a ‘best in class’ facility to train workers for the company’s new wind turbine blade factory in Hull. We have placed special focus on our students’ achievements, from our 14-16 GCSE success stories to our annual FE Awards and the start of our HE graduation ceremonies which take place across the region and recognise the achievements of all students who achieve a Higher Education qualification with us. There have been a number of key appointments made over the summer; Caron Wright joined Goole College as the new Principal following Lynne Richardson’s retirement, Andrew McCarroll joined the Group as the new Director of Quality & Standards, having gained a wealth of experience in teaching and management positions in colleges in North Wales and Liverpool, and most recently, we have welcomed Alastair Thomson as the Founding Principal for University Campus Scarborough. The Group frequently seeks to improve its educational facilities and provision within the region; we highlight a new £6 million pound redevelopment for Harrogate College which has been secured, which will expand the College’s offer in those subjects supporting the visitor economy, heritage crafts, cultural and business economies, making Harrogate College a centre of excellence for the region. We will also be investing at Goole College in a new welding workshop and a new CITB Internet Test Centre. HCUK Training, our commercial arm, is developing a unique qualification and training pathway for local and regional businesses and their employees to develop key logistics and supply chain skills. Sporting partnerships are continually being forged with the Group; in the last edition of The Review, we covered the exciting news that Harrogate College had started working with Harrogate Town Football Club to offer every student at the College the opportunity to benefit from the Club’s sports training and expertise. In this edition, we cover the news of Hull College launching a brand new elite boxing academy in partnership with the Luke Campbell Foundation and the work done between students and tutors at Hull College and Hull FC players to record a new charity single. We continue to showcase a number of positive and successful highlights across the Group and we look forward to continuing to do so throughout the 2015/16 academic year.

n September 2015, Hull College celebrated receiving a key training contract with Siemens to develop a facility to train workers for the company’s new wind turbine blade factory in Hull. The contract, worth around £1m, will see the conversion of an existing college facility to deliver training to the blade factory workforce over the next two years and support the company’s ongoing training needs as it establishes a new industry for the UK in the city. As part of the deal, Hull College Group will invest £400,000 to upgrade and re-equip a Construction Skills Centre - to be renamed the Hull College Group Composites Training Centre. The facility will become one of just two in the UK which specialises in manufacturing skills using composite materials – the other being the National Composites Centre in Bristol. Siemens’ blades are a composite of balsa wood, glass fibre and resin. Siemens selected Hull College Group from four local

training providers following a thorough bidding process. This involved the training providers visiting Siemens’ blade factory in Aalborg, Denmark, and Aalborg Technical College, which has a longestablished training relationship with Siemens. Under the deal, a successful training programme from the Aalborg College will be replicated in Hull, with the Hull centre becoming a sister training facility to the Danish operation. All 800 operational staff hired to work in the blade factory will undergo five weeks of training at the Hull College facility, with the first recruits trained from March 2016. Hull College Group Chief Executive Gary Warke said: “We are delighted to be chosen by Siemens to be their

preferred partner to deliver a highlyskilled workforce to meet their training requirements for the significant investment in the renewables sector in our local economy. “Investing with Hull College Group, enabling the development of an industryleading facility and committing to put 800 people through training here is a massive demonstration of Siemens’ commitment to the city and local community.” Siemens’ UK Head of Skills Martin Hottass said: “Hull College Group’s bid was the strongest overall in terms of quality of provision, as well as having the most suitable facility for delivery of the training. They put together a very convincing bid and were able to demonstrate they have

the quality of staff and infrastructure to deliver the training we require.” Siemens’ Hull Project Director Finbarr Dowling said: “Wherever Siemens operates we seek to contribute to building a skills infrastructure to support the successful and sustainable development of our business and the wider economy. “Our relationship with Hull College Group is a perfect example of this. By awarding this training contract we are enabling the development of skills that would not otherwise exist locally. As well as supporting our training needs, it will deliver significant value to the local economy and community.”

End of year success for 14-16 students This summer saw the College’s first cohort of 14-16 students celebrate their GCSE results. Here are some of our students’ successes.

Ellen

Jordan

Ellen has worked remarkably hard in preparation for her exams and has done herself proud, rising 3 levels of progress to achieve Cs in English, Science and Film Studies, as well as a Distinction in IT Skills and a Pass in Business. She gained a Pass in Engineering and has been accepted onto the apprenticeship programme with HCUK Training and is currently looking for a placement so she can get started on her dream Engineering career.

Jordan didn’t expect to do so well in his exams so was understandably thrilled when he saw his C grade in Maths, his Pass in Construction and his Distinction* in IT. His grades and his hands-on practical skills gave him what he needed to be accepted onto a Fabrication & Welding apprenticeship.

“Not in a million years did I expect a C in Science! I’m stunned and shocked by my results and I can’t believe how well I’ve done. I really changed when I came to the 14-16 College, I really knuckled down and worked hard. I’m so pleased!”

“I am really pleased about my grades – the hard work I put in really paid off and my results were better than expected. I’ve got the results I needed to for my next steps and I’m currently on an apprenticeship trial at MH Industrial. I wouldn’t have got these grades in school, I’m so glad I moved to the 14-16 College.”

Lydia & Jack Lydia and Jack both achieved 3 Cs in English Literature, English Language & Science and D in Maths and were thrilled with their grades, allowing them to study Applied Science and A Levels in Sociology, Psychology and Biology. Lydia applied to the 14-16 College after a recommendation from Jack and enrolled with us after a period of home schooling and says “I was really worried I wasn’t going to pass but I got a C in English Language AND Literature! I’m also really pleased we’ve both done well in our vocational courses. One of the best things I have ever done is come to the 1416 College full time!” Jack joined the College as a shy, quiet student and the last 2 years have seen him overcome some significant personal issues to become a confident and hard-working young man with great prospects. Jack says “I’m really proud of my overall results, if I hadn’t moved to the College there is no way I would have achieved this. I wouldn’t have been successful if I had stayed at school.”

Luke

Mario

Luke has achieved an impressive array of results, allowing him to progress on to his first choice. Bs & Cs across Maths, English & Science, as well as Passes in his vocational areas of Art & Hospitality and a Distinction* in IT Skills have meant Luke can now study A Levels in Business, Maths, English Language and IT. Big congratulations to Luke!

Star student, Mario, achieved great things with the 14-16 College, including Bs in English Language & Literature and a ‘magnifique’ grade A in French! An active performer, Mario joined us originally to study his passion, Performing Arts, where he achieved a Distinction* at Level 2 and started his own theatre production company. Since then he has passed Art and gained a Distinction* in his ECDL IT Application Skills. Congratulations to Mario for gaining a place on the Level 3 Business Diploma at Hull College!

“I’m most proud of my Maths grade B as when I first joined I was working at D/C level. I can finally feel the weight lifted off my shoulders knowing that I’ve passed and that I’ve achieved more than enough to progress in September.”

4

“I am particularly proud of my A in French and really happy that I’ve got the grades to progress onto a high level course. I’m looking forward to starting my Business course in September.”

Harrogate College will earmark the £6m funding for safeguarding the future of vocational education; focusing on a curriculum that meets the local priorities identified by local market intelligence and the Local Enterprise Partnership. The project will also extend the College’s existing higher education offer in response to a desire to secure increased employment opportunities. Hall Construction Group has been announced as the main contractor for the project. Founded in Hull in 1887, the family owned multi-skilled construction company has a wealth of experience in new builds, refurbishments, extensions and alterations of further and higher education buildings.

Hull College students tell Minister of optimism for the future during Siemens visit Hull College students have told the Energy Minister of their optimism for the future as the huge Siemens investment opens up new jobs and opportunities. At the start of October, a group of Level 3 Engineering students met Andrea Leadsom, Minister of State at the Department of Energy & Climate Change, at a Hull College facility which will be used to train all 800 operational staff employed within Siemens’ new wind turbine blade factory. Students Thomas Brodie, 17, Lee Budgen, 20, Matthew James, 19, James Nell, 18, Joshua Owens, 17, and

12

Andrew Williams, 22, told the Minister they were excited by the opportunities opening up with Siemens and other investors in the energy sector. Hull College Principal Graham Towse said: “We have a wellestablished track record of training young people and more mature workers with the skills to support a diverse spectrum of industries. The dedicated Composites Training Centre for Siemens is the latest example of our development of high-quality, bespoke training facilities and provision. “We were delighted to have the opportunity to introduce the Minister to that facility,

in advance of her visit to the Siemens site at Alexandra Dock, and pleased that she could spend time meeting some of our engineering students and hearing how positive they feel about the opportunities opening up for them and others.” Chris Elliott, Curriculum Leader for Engineering Technologies at Hull College, who hosted the visit to the training facility, said: “The students were excellent ambassadors for Hull College. They came over as very confident, sincere and interested in what the Minister told them about careers within the energy sector and keen to be part of the opportunity that Siemens offers.

TheReview • Hull College Group • Stakeholders’ Newsletter

Our students recognise that Siemens coming to the city is a great opportunity for young people to develop a career with one of the biggest and most respected companies in the world and one that will help to shape the future of the region’s economy and the UK’s future energy requirements.” The Minister, whose specific responsibilities include new energy infrastructure, energy security and the electricity and gas markets, was in the Humber region to find out how the Energy Estuary is powering the UK’s renewables revolution.

HCUK Training to launch Logistics Gateway to tackle skills shortage HCUK Training is developing a unique qualification and training pathway for local and regional businesses and their employees to develop key logistics and supply chain skills which will add measurable business value and enhance individual career development. It is estimated that in the period 2012-2020, there will be 87,000 vacancies in the UK Transport and Storage sector that will remain unfilled due to potential applicants not possessing the required soft skills. This will cost the sector £633 million (at 2011 prices) in lost economic output. HCUK Training’s Logistics Gateway, to launch in the New Year, aims to address this

problem by adding value to business operations through the development of core skills in the workforce.

companies, in logistics and supply chain activities to gain competitive advantage by investing in their staff.”

Emma Yorke, Managing Director of HCUK Training said: “The Logistics Gateway will offer more than just great courses – it will provide professional development and bespoke and standalone training to support individual business needs.

HCUK Training has already made real impacts on operational efficiency. In 2013, a group of middle management students made operational savings of £172,000 in an Express Logistics organisation.

“The extent of investment around the Humber means there is a thirst for fresh talent and new energy to make those investments a success.

By 2020, the figure for lost economic output in England due to soft skill shortages is estimated at £6,477m, with the

figure for Yorkshire and Humber estimated at £458m. The Logistics Gateway will also offer ‘soft skills’ training in communication, performance management, interpersonal skills, decision-making and initiative-taking.
