We are delighted to have become the fifth college in the country to achieve Foundation Degree Awarding Powers in November which means we will now be able to develop and award foundation degree programmes more swiftly to meet the highly specific needs of our students, equipping them even more comprehensively to get the job they want and the career they aspire to. We were the first large college to be inspected under Ofsted’s new inspection framework in November and we were delighted the inspectorate recognised our good teaching, our high aspirations for all our learners, our highly effective and innovative partnership working and our significant strength in preparing all our learners with good employability skills and training to meet the needs of the local economy. Once again, we are proud to have a number of achievements to celebrate at all levels; our students achieved tremendous success at the WorldSkills UK finals, with student Josh Hunter being crowned the UK’s Best Young Bricklayer. Hull College Group leads on preparing students for Future Employment Hull College Group has been praised by Ofsted and recognised for preparing students for employment though effective development of their employability skills. The inspection team visited the Group’s three Colleges at Hull, Harrogate and Goole as well as examining the Group’s employer based learning programmes which are delivered by HCUK Training on a national basis. When the inspection team visited in November 2015 they observed lessons and spoke to students, staff and governors, as well as met with local stakeholders.

• Teachers are well qualified and use their knowledge and vocational expertise effectively… Information and learning technology are used innovatively to enhance learners’ knowledge and understanding • Learners and apprentices receive high-quality, impartial advice and guidance which ensures they have a good understanding of their career options and what they need to do to achieve them

Ofsted judged the overall effectiveness as ‘’good’’ with strengths in all areas of leadership and management, teaching, learning and assessment, personal development, behaviour and welfare and outcomes for learners.

• For 14 to 16 year old pupils current progress is very strong, as are attendance and retention. Almost all of the pupils who completed in summer 2015 have progressed to further education or training

Key findings from the recently published Final Inspection Report include:

• Apprentices enjoy their learning; due to the high standard of their work, their employers see them as indispensable team members

• The Group works very successfully with a range of partners and stakeholders and Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) to ensure that provision is exceptionally responsive to local and regional priorities. This ensures learners have excellent opportunities to progress

• Staff have successfully secured destinations data on three quarters of their leavers. This reveals that more than 90% progressed to a positive destination, such as sustained employment or further education

• Learners benefit from having access to industry standard equipment, enabling them to produce good standards of work and prepare them well for future employment • These (employability) skills help those without employment to gain work and those with employment to gain greater responsibilities or promotion. The employability passport, which

4

has been created with input from employers, is a highly effective way of helping learners track the skills they are achieving

Hull College Group Chief Executive Gary Warke said: “We are delighted with Ofsted’s judgements of the Group and the many strengths they have identified. The highly positive report recognises that throughout all areas of provision our students are making good progress and being prepared for the world of work.”

Motor Vehicle student awarded national accolade at Silverstone The home of British motorsport has witnessed Formula 1 greats, such as Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna, crowned as winners climbing onto the rostrum to the cheers of the crowd. Now, Silverstone has seen one Hull College student follow in their footsteps to scoop her own top accolade. Elizabeth Hodgson has been crowned Body Repair Student of the Year at the famous racetrack. To complete her studies, the 21 year old has had to make a round trip of more than 120 miles, setting off at six-thirty in the morning from her home in Robin Hoods Bay, North Yorkshire.

“I would also like to say thank you to and all the other staff at the college and of course to my friends and family that have helped me throughout.” Elizabeth was nominated for the award by David Paine, Course Tutor for Level 3 Body Repair, at Hull College.

The ceremony, organised by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), was hosted by HRH Prince Michael of Kent and recognised the talents and skills of students within the motor industry across the UK.

He said: “This is an amazing achievement for Elizabeth and the award is testament to her hard work and determination. She thoroughly deserves to be up there with the best in her chosen vocation.

Elizabeth was one of 14 winners chosen from more than 120,000 IMI learners, 30,000 IMI accreditation holders, and management professionals from across the motor industry.

“I am incredibly proud that a Hull College student has been recognised and has received this prestigious national award.”

Elizabeth said: “I am really proud of myself for achieving the Outstanding Body Repair Student of the Year award. It is an amazing feeling to win and I am still getting to grips with the fact that I have been named as the best student in body repair from across the UK.

10

“I certainly couldn’t have achieved this without the amazing help Hull College gave me throughout my course. Big thank you to my course leader David Paine and fellow tutors Paul Wisker and Paul Wiles.

This is not the first time Elizabeth’s talents have been recognised. Earlier this year she took part in the national IMI Skill Auto 2015 Competition held in Coventry. She was one of only seventeen body repairers selected from more than three hundred applicants and the only female body repairer to make it through to the regional heats.

Education pioneer from Hull honoured with commemorative plaque

A commemorative plaque paying tribute to pioneering teacher and missionary Margaret Moxon who paved the way for education for girls in New Zealand during the 1800s was unveiled at the Centre for Digital and Green Energy at Hull College.

who played a crucial role in education for girls in New Zealand, leaving a legacy which still continues to this day.

Born on the 18 August 1808 in Sculcoates, Hull, Margaret took a great interest in missionary work while at school. Following her marriage to teacher George Kissling, the couple travelled to Sierra Leone to teach at a mission school and then in New Zealand for the Church Missionary Society. They opened a school in Auckland for Maori girls, training them to be suitable and supportive wives for Maori men training to be ministers. The plaques form part of the Lord Mayor’s Centenary plaque trail, launched last year, which commemorate pioneers, campaigners and ground-breakers that came from Hull and were influential in the city or across the world.

“We are delighted that we are able to honour Margaret with a plaque at the site of her birthplace, now the Centre for Digital and Green Energy at Hull College, and I would like to thank the college for allowing us to place this memorial on their site.” There are a number of other heritage plaques across Hull, each telling their own story about the city’s heritage. The Centenary plaques differ in that they will have an interactive feature for the modern day. A new App is in development and in the future people with a smart phone or smart device will be able to download the App to find out more about the person being commemorated.

Former Lord Mayor, Councillor Mary Glew, who leads the initiative, said: “Margaret was a Hull born and bred missionary

Hull College Group celebrates first cohort of 14-16 year olds H

ull College Group hosted their first ever leavers’ awards ceremony for students in their 14-16 College in November.

Hosted by Viking FM’s Steve Jordan, the ceremony celebrated the first cohort of 16 year olds who have left Hull and Goole Colleges after two years of GCSE and vocational study, thus becoming some of only 100 pupils in the country to achieve these qualifications full-time within a college setting. The 14-16 College was established through an initiative of Professor Alison Wolf whose March 2011 report considered how vocational education for 14 to 19 year olds could be improved in order to promote successful progression to jobs, higher level education and training routes. Five 14-16 Colleges opened in 2013, one of which being at Hull and Goole College which was formally launched by Professor Wolf. This offered pupils the choice to complete Years 10 and 11 at the colleges instead of staying at school. They joined both Hull

College and Goole College to study full-time and take high level vocational qualifications alongside GCSEs in core subject areas, including English, Maths and Science & IT. Gary Warke, Chief Executive of Hull College Group said: “The Hull College Group is proud to lead the way in 14-16 college education; providing our students with not only the GCSEs they need to progress but also a rich vocational offer not available within secondary schools. “Our awards ceremony was a fantastic event and provided the Group with the opportunity to congratulate our first cohort of 14-16 year olds who have made the most of an exciting college experience with us. “Our excellent teaching staff deliver an outstanding educational delivery and our students have all achieved something really special. Harrogate College Fashion student a finalist in The Clothes Show Live Holly Greenwood studying in her second year on BA (HONS) Fashion has been selected as a finalist at The Clothes Show Live, Young Designer Competition 2015. Beginning as a summer project, the brief for The Clothes Show Live Young Designer Competition was to design an outfit suitable for a top fashion blogger attending Tokyo fashion week. It had to be a full outfit consisting of jacket, top, trousers, bag and shoes measured to a size 10 model. Entrants had to then submit a project book, design illustrations, flat drawings and two mood boards to the panel and then cross their fingers. Submissions were shortlisted to ten finalists who saw their designs come to life on the catwalk at the Birmingham NEC on 6th December 2015. Holly entered the competition as suggested by course tutor Annabel Smith, to gain experience in working with a live brief and to add to her growing portfolio of work. Holly says her inspiration came from street style and she immediately immersed herself in researching a variety of fabrics, patterns and textures that could be combined into a winning outfit. The Young Designer Competition, sponsored by Olympus Pen offers entrants the opportunity to get a taste for life in the fast paced fashion industry, working with models, to a tight deadline and also on a catwalk. Holly said: “I didn’t think I was in with a chance of becoming a finalist, but my hard work over the summer has paid off and now I get to see my outfit on the catwalk! The skills and techniques that I learned in the first year of my course have massively helped me get to where I am right now.” Annabel Smith said: “I’m extremely proud of and excited for Holly. She has put an incredible amount of work into this project and gained a lot of valuable experience from it. I can’t wait to see her outfit come to life!”

Harrogate College Design student wins opportunity to work in house building industry An Interior Design student at Harrogate College has been chosen to work with a Yorkshire based interior designer to create a brand new show home for leading housebuilder Miller Homes. The housebuilder, along with designer Jeanette Holmes, hosted a competition with second year degree students from the College asking them to design an interior scheme for the master suite at its forthcoming Chene Hall development in the village of Killinghall.

Sadie, 23, from Harrogate, designed a scheme that had a muted colour palette, elegant furniture and soft furnishings that would be ideally suited to the five bedroom ‘Thames’ style show home. Sadie will now work alongside Jeanette to bring her scheme to life and gain an understanding of how a show home interior is brought to life.

“We were amazed at the amount of effort the students had clearly put into their schemes and the variety of the ideas that they presented to us,” said Jan Hanaby area sales manager Miller Homes Yorkshire. “All had a very clear direction but one scheme, created by Sadie Mae Martin, really embodied the brief we had set fulfilling all our wishes.”

British Potato Industry Competition winner The Catering and Hospitality department at Harrogate College was approached by the British Potato Industry, and invited to take part in an exciting competition which offered students on the Level 2 Professional Cookery course the fantastic opportunity to have their dish cooked for up to 900 people at a dinner held at the Harrogate International Centre (HIC) in November 2015. The British Potato Industry have an expanding educational strategy to get young people cooking with and eating more potatoes, so they challenged Harrogate College catering students to come up with a main course that shows off the versatility of the potato. After creating a recipe, the students cooked their chosen dishes for a group of judges in the Harrogate College Metro Restaurant that included Principal Debra Forsythe-Conroy and Nick White, Head of Marketing for AHBD Potatoes. A vast array of skills and techniques were used by the students to come up with some excellent dishes with the winning dish being chosen as British Bubble ‘n’ Squeak with Crispy Belly Pork and a Red Wine Jus, by Frazer Coulby. “Frazer’s dish was not only visually stunning, but the combination of classic flavours made it a stand out winner.” – Nick White, head of marketing for AHDB Potatoes. All participating students also got the opportunity to work behind the scenes at the event, to help prepare the winning dish in the HIC kitchens, providing valuable hands on experience which can go towards their qualification.
