Julia and Tom

Julie Sublett and Thomas Rittenhouse September 4, 2010 | Valle Crucis, NC

Our story...

Our wedding weekend was full of love. We had guests from a dozen states joining us to celebrate our new life together. We didn’t make it easy on our traveling guests, as we chose Boone, NC for our destination wedding. I chose the High Country because I lived in Boone while Tom and I began dating and I fell in love with the area. A big storm blew in right before our rehearsal. Our ceremony was planned outside, so it seemed like the most obvious option was to wait out the storm. Twenty minutes later Keith Ward, the owner of Dutch Creek Trails, summoned Tom and I outside. There was a complete rainbow across the

pasture. The “pot of gold” so to speak, was lighting the little mound Keith mowed to be our altar. This was the start to our wedding weekend. I’ll boastfully say one of the most beautiful aspects of the wedding was my wedding dress. It was purchased in 1969 by my aunt, Debbie Langley. It was then worn by her five younger sisters, my oldest cousin, and my older sister. I am proud to say I am the ninth woman in our family to wear the dress. Rodica Lazarian of Atlanta, GA altered the dress for my sister in 2007, and put her magical touch on it one more time for my September wedding.

We used the barn loft for the groom and groomsmen to get ready. The ladies and I took over an abandoned white house across the way for our preparations. From both locations we could watch the guests come in and make themselves comfortable with refreshments while they waited. Keith’s brother drove the guests across the creek to the ceremony site with his tractor and hay wagon. I waded Dutch Creek and my father and I began our long walk through the pasture, down the aisle of rose petals, to the altar.

After the ceremony, guests were shuttled to the Apple Barn, only a mile away. They were provided with hors d’oeurves and an old family recipe, “Bourbon Slushes,” while waiting for us to arrive. While guests were dancing, my aunt Carol took it upon herself to provide props for a make-shift photo booth. Fake mustaches and cowboy hats began taking over the reception, and no one got away without having their photo taken. We cut into our “Chomp” cake, and passed out cupcakes from Stickboy Bread Co. The big, shark, Chompy, was symbolic at the start of our relationship… when “Chomp” was used before saying “Love.” “Chomp” is what’s engraved on the inside of our rings. After the reception guests gathered back at Dutch Creek Trails for an after party and bon-fire while we snuck away to our nearby honeymoon cabin. We ‘chomped’ our wedding.

Meghan and Stuart

Meghan Lumsden and Stuart Presnell October 23, 2010 | Linville, NC

Our story...

After spending two years traveling back and forth between Nashville and Raleigh, Stuart and I were tired of the long distance and ready to get married. When it came to choosing a location, we struggled between having a wedding in our hometown of Raleigh, or flying off somewhere for a destination wedding. We spent several days looking at different options and still couldn’t seem to find the right fit that was “us.” Then, out of nowhere it seemed, the answer came to us. We would often drive to the mountains to meet in the middle, so why not meet in the middle again and have our wedding in a place that was still close to home, yet in a world of its own, that still felt like a destination wedding? We visited Linville after talking to Stuart’s mom, who had often vacationed there and quickly fell in love with the breathtaking scenery that Eseeola offered.

When the anticipated weekend arrived, along with all of our family and friends, we were blessed with one of the warmest Octobers in recent history. We did everything from playing golf and tennis, to hiking Grandfather Mountain and going to the shooting range. The big day began with a delicious brunch at the lodge, where Stuart and I were kept separate so we couldn’t sneak a peek at one another. We each got ready with our friends, then made out way to the camp, which was covered in autumn’s most vibrant colors. We exchanged vows on Eseeola’s hillside framed by what I am convinced is some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, complete with geese flying overhead and Grandfather Mountain’s silhouette overlooking. We made our way up the hill to the flower-covered pavilion, where we dined

on everything from mountain trout, to shrimp, to tenderloin. Stuart and I really wanted to add some personal touches to our wedding to make it ours. A canvas was set up where everyone could add to a painting for our home, which turned out to be fantastic. As the sun dipped below the mountains, everyone grabbed a scarf or pashmina off of our metal “tree,” in one of our colors of coral and green, and watched as fireworks lit up the sky. Our band, Skate Rink Jukebox, kept everyone on the dance floor the entire time. Inevitably, our evening had to come to an end, and we wound down the night by eating Krispy Kreme donuts, which was where Stuart and I had our first date. The wedding could have not been more perfect, and we departed under a showering of rose petals and made our way to our new life together.

Jamie and Chris

Jamie Bencze and Chris Rademacher December 31, 2009 | Blowing Rock, NC

Our story...

Chris and I went to high school together in Florida. In our sophomore year, we both changed schools and lost touch. Fifteen years later we were reconnected – he was living in Phoenix, AZ, and I in Boone, N.C. We met again one Thanksgiving weekend. One highlight, aside from getting reacquainted, was a walk around Bass Lake in Blowing Rock. It was there, eight months later, that Chris proposed and I accepted. As we began to plan our wedding, it was important to us that the ceremony and celebration expressed our personalities. Incorporating family and friends was a big part of how we did that. The mink stole I wore belonged to my grandmother, so it was a special way to be reminded of her. Chris and I share the same initials as my parents do, so we incorporated a monogram that my uncle, a graphic artist, designed for them to use at their wedding. We were blessed to have one of Chris’ best friends sing our favorite song, “To Make You Feel My Love,” as we began our ceremony. Later in the ceremony we signed our marriage license, while a song another uncle wrote and recorded for us played. I loved that

we chose to face our guests during the ceremony, rather than our officiant facing them. This created such an intimate feeling and allowed us to feel more like shared this special event with them. We decided New Year’s Eve would be the perfect date – we could begin our new lives as husband and wife by ringing in the new year with our family and friends. We knew winter weather could bring challenges for a celebration in the mountains, but as it turned out, the snow created the beautiful backdrop of a winter wonderland. We married at 2 p.m. on New Year’s Eve at Banner Elk Christian Fellowship. The early afternoon ceremony allowed Chris and I time for some photos, and gave all of our guests an opportunity to relax our before our reception began later at

Chetola Resort. It continued until after “the ball dropped,” ringing in the New Year. We chose Chetola Resort because it provided an elegant mountain lodge atmosphere that seemed perfect for a winter wedding in the High Country.

combine our wedding celebration with the New Year’s Eve party vibe we were hoping for. I have had so many guests share with me what a great party our reception was – that was exactly what we wanted.

Great photos were important to us, and I knew from the moment I met with Katie Langley that she had the style we were looking for. She captured all the important moments and provided photos that will be precious mementos for years to come. After spending some time with Sheri from Bless Your Heart, I felt like I had a clear vision for the reception. She designed all of our bouquets and arrangements, which were reused at the reception. She also provided great ideas as my sister, my mom and I designed the centerpieces. Our cakes were incredible, and we were very impressed by the offroading scene JoAnn Hallmark molded Chris’s groom’s cake into – it looked amazing and was delicious.

One of the most challenging things for me to do in anticipation of the wedding was preparing physically. I wanted to be in the best shape possible so I would look and feel my best on my wedding day. All Out Fitness Boot Camp got me into the best shape of my life. I spent five days a week during the four months leading up to the wedding working out with Valerie at boot camp – running, cardio, strength building. I pushed myself like I never had before and it paid off – I lost 15 pounds and six inches off my waist! I felt incredible on my wedding day!

U.S. Party Patrol provided the soundtrack for the reception as well as the energy to 18 • highcountryweddingguide.com

Jenny and Phil

Jenny Dubberly and Phil Pilewski August 7, 2010 | Blowing Rock, NC

Our story...

Since Phil and I met in Raleigh and dated for two years before moving to Seattle deciding where we would marry involved extra thought. With guests coming from more than 10 states, we knew that travel would be difficult and we feared some special people wouldn’t be able to make the trip. I grew up in the High Country and since my family still lives there, Phil and I enjoy regular visits. When we began visiting local venues, we realized that we wanted our guests to experience this area that holds a permanent spot on our list of favorite places. We quickly decided that a wedding in the High Country was exactly what we wanted. Donna at Did Someone Say Party made shopping for my dress a wonderful experience. In fact, I never would have found “the dress” had she not handpicked it and convinced me to try it on. I remember leaving the store and turning to my mother to say, “Donna made trying on wedding dresses feel exactly how it should feel.” Not only did she make it such a pleasure to be in her store, she offered support at every turn to ensure that everyone was ready for the big day. The High Country is lucky to have her.

Sweet peas hold a special significance to my family. My deceased grandmother nicknamed my mother “Sweet Pea.” In turn, my mother has called me the same name all my life. On one of our visits to the SweetGrass property during the planning process, we were surprised and excited to discover “Sweet Pea Lane” near the wedding site. It felt magical. When Sheri heard the story, she made sure to include white sweet peas both in my mother’s nosegay and in my bouquet. On our wedding day, we arrived at Sweet Grass to find little surprises everywhere. With the kissing ball at the boathouse and a chandelier of hydrangeas anchoring the center of the reception tent, Sheri created beautiful vignettes throughout the grounds that felt as

When we began planning the ceremony and reception, we had a clear vision of what we wanted to feel on that day. Our florist, Sheri Furman of Bless Your Heart, used the term “comfortable elegance.” She understood perfectly the mood we wanted to create. 21 • highcountryweddingguide.com

though every area was designed specifically for each person to pick and choose his or her experience. Buddy Fore catered and coordinated the reception, and was a pleasure to work with from the moment we first spoke. Not only was the menu carefully chosen, the food was amazing. Buddy and his team made sure the guests received special attention and service, and his creative eye and attention to detail resulted in just the presentation we wanted. Buddy stayed throughout the reception to make sure everything went just as we had requested, and his presence added so much fun to the evening. We often wish we could relive the feeling and experience, so we feel fortunate that Jonathan Burton Photography captured our wedding day. Months later, we still marvel at the work. We have often said some of our best memories were when Jonathan would steal us away to take advantage of a certain lighting or scenery. During those quieter moments, Phil and I were able to truly be “in the moment” and take it all in. I will never forget the view from afar as we watched our family and friends gathered in one space to show their love and support.

So many special pieces stand out as little miracles, as it all came together for a perfect day. From the invitations – designed together by my brother and family friend, a wonderful artist – to the minister who stood as a groomsman beside my parents 38 years ago – to the cherished siblings and friends who stood next to us as our bridal party, we felt as though we were in a special dream.

We were grateful to and honored by for the family and friends who made the trip. It felt like a true destination wedding…in my own hometown. We are also thankful for the special events given by dear friends and family throughout our engagement at The Inn at Crestwood, The Village Café, and Rowland’s Restaurant at Westglow Resort and Spa. Each of these special memories are a true gift from the people involved in creating them in our lives. The meaningful details were magnified because Phil and I had the people who mean the most to us gathered together as we vowed to love and cherish one another for the rest of our lives.

Megan and Paul

Megan Robertson and Paul Corkery June 12, 2010 | Boone, NC

Our story...

I have an infatuation with Ireland and never anticipated meeting the man of my dreams while studying abroad. But, while studying abroad in Cork, Ireland during the fall of 2006, I happened upon a lovable Irish guy named Paul. After meeting in August, we started dating in November. We developed a strong friendship and eventually realized we were falling deeply in love with each other. Our love perseverd uring more than three years of a long distance relationship. Paul proposed at the stroke of midnight one New Year’s Eve in Kerry, Ireland. Fireworks and church bells filled the small Irish village just after I said “yes.” It was more magical than I could have ever imagined. I lived in Boone and Blowing Rock my whole life, so we went back and forth on having the wedding in Boone or Ireland. We eventually decided on the High Country.

Our wedding incorporated several Irish themes and traditions, in the hope of making Paul and the Irish visitors feel more at home here in Boone during the festivities. For us, the most important aspect of our wedding was the photography and we chose an incredible photographer, Katie Langley. We were also blessed with the best wedding planner, Elizabeth Hempfling. We celebrated our wedding with 225 of our closest friends and family at the first-ever reception in the Summit Trail Solarium at Appalachian State University. The Solarium allowed us to bring our outdoor wedding indoors, with trees and waterfalls surrounding our guests. Most of Paul’s family and friends were able to travel from Ireland for the wedding so it was a unique celebration for both families. Everything about our day was perfect. 43 • highcountryweddingguide.com

Lori and Jack

Lori Strickland and Jack Sharp August 21, 2010 | Blowing Rock, NC

Our story...

Jack and I were neighbors in Wilmington, N.C. We met one day as I walked my dog around our neighborhood we shared. Throughout our relationship, we always loved visiting his family’s camp in Blowing Rock, NC. The very minute I saw the camp’s open-aire, dirt-floor chapel nestled in its beautiful valley, I knew we would get married there. When he proposed, we lived in Texas but there was no question where the wedding would take place. We had a grand vision of a wedding filled with friends, family, music, and food at Camp Sky Ranch. The camp had been started by Jack’s grandfather, and was family-operated for over 60 years. Everyone in their family had some part in its history of serving the special needs population. We knew we’d feel close to his grandfather, (whom he never met) and grandmother there; and undoubtedly, closer to God. When we discovered my mother’s illness the following winter, however, plans changed. I moved back to North Carolina to help take care of her while Jack stayed in Texas to work. Planning the wedding we wanted and taking care of Mom proved to be too much for me. I tearfully decided that we should keep it as simple as possible, and simply invite our parents and siblings for a short ceremony and a nice dinner afterward. I did, however, refuse to compromise on having a great

photographer. I had already decided that I wanted Katie Langley to document our wedding, no matter how small. The months went by as I planned the new version of our wedding. With every step, I felt a pang of sadness knowing I wouldn’t be able to celebrate the most wonderful day of my life with those that were happiest for me - my closest friends. I wasn’t even sure that my mom would able to attend. She battled cancer throughout the course of the summer, and her recovery would take at least two months.

Jack Sharp Sr. founded Camp Sky Ranch in 1948 as a summer camp for special needs children. 47 • highcountryweddingguide.com

We weren’t sure if she would even survive, much less be able to make the five-hour trip. I continued to stay with her as Jack prepared to move back to N.C. I had purchased tickets for a concert in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The concert was two nights before our wedding, and everything was set for our simple ceremony with dinner following at the Gamekeeper. We were sitting in our car outside before the show when Jack told me that he had something to get off his chest before we were married. I listened as he told me that we were going to have the wedding we wanted all along. He had continued planning our original wedding in secret since the day I tearfully decided to simplify. Our closest friends would indeed be there! We were not eating at The Gamekeeper. Rather, the restaurant would be catering the reception in the dining hall of the camp. Bless Your Heart was providing decor and flowers for myself and my bridesmaids! He told me there would even be a bluegrass band playing for our reception! We traveled to Blowing Rock the next

day, and I met Elizabeth Hemphling, who whose team coordinate the wedding, and Sheri Furman, of Bless Your Heart, they were both already hard at work turning the valley into wedding bliss. I found myself relieved that I hadn’t needed to make any planning decisions during those few difficult months, but could still rest easy knowing it would be perfect. The day of our wedding, I had not seen any of the decorations, and I was blown away when I stepped into the shabby chic cabin where we would dress. Sheri had tied inspirational poems from the ceiling and covered the old bunk beds with burlap and cozy quilts. Everywhere I looked there was a bud vase with flowers. There was an antique mirror and a wicker rocking chair where my mother sat as my best friends helped me slip into my dress. The chapel was decorated beautifully in simple decor. After my daddy walked me down the aisle, Jack and I recited our own, heartfelt vows and were, at last, married. We didn’t notice at the time, but our guests told us that the rain stopped and the sun came out as we said our vows to one another.

We were served family-style at one large table beautifully decorated with burlap, flowers and apples. The food, wine and desserts were fabulous and I was overwhelmed when I learned that the Gamekeeper owner, Ken Gordon, had helped Jack pick apples from the camp’s property to make the chutney for the meal. His wife, Wendy, hand-crafted a beautiful wedding cake and several other delicious desserts.

The Lost Ridge Band played as we ate and mingled. Katie Langley captured every moment, every smile, every kiss. She documented the beauty that our vendors, who now felt like friends, had created. We felt love everywhere that day. Our wedding was without a doubt the most wonderful day of my life. My husband planning and surprising me was the best gift anyone has ever given me. Five months later, I still feel overwhelmed to think about the blessing God bestowed upon me that day. My mother was not only able to attend our wedding, but is still recovering well. I have a wonderful new family, and we have the opportunity to bring Camp Sky Ranch back to life. After Jack’s collaboration with Ken and Wendy during our wedding, we were able to see the potential for Camp Sky Ranch as a venue not only for weddings, but family reunions, church retreats, day camps and the like. We were always saddened that the camp had closed two years beforehand and felt that it should be utilized to its full potential. With the help of Ken and Wendy Gordon, Jack and I plan to create a 49 • highcountryweddingguide.com

non-profit that raises awareness and money through special events to help fund the tuition needed to send former campers back to Camp Sky Ranch. We want to continue serving those same individuals with the same spirit that his grandfather began the camp with. In the future, we’d like to create a community for those individuals. We envision a small portion of Camp Sky Ranch as an organic farm where they can live or work and see the fruit of their labor for themselves. They will be able to help farm the land, tend to animals, and take produce and animal products to local restaurants or the farmer’s market for sale. We want to continue the Sky Ranch legacy for generations to come. For more information and to learn how to support Camp Sky Ranch, visit www.campskyranchevents.com.

Meredith and J.D. Meredith Adams and J.D. Ross June 19, 2010 | Banner Elk, NC

Our story...

J.D. and I grew up near each other in Hickory, N.C. We vowed to live happily ever after on June 19th, 2010 at The Farm at Banner Elk. J.D. proposed to me on a snowy winter day on the Blue Ridge Parkway not far from our wedding location. The wedding planning quickly began with a colorful vision. Peacock jewel tones caught my eye; they were vibrant and rich for a summer wedding. Looking North for a cool day in June, we found our dream location in Banner Elk, where rolling mountains opened up to a pondside, ceremony. A gorgeous rustic shelter with stone fireplace had all the features needed for the perfect reception. We immediately started praying for a sunny day! The bridal party appeared over a hill as the hammer dulcimer played a lively folk melody. It proceeded down a path cut through gorgeous, knee-deep, purple wild flowers. The weather was perfect for the event, our dog and ring bearer, Ozzy,

took a few opportunities to swim in the pond. The groomsmen, bridesmaids, and flower girls all wore handmade dresses and vests in vibrant peacok tones including turquoise, deep green, a rich gold, and navy blue. The flowers were whimsical mixed with feathers and twigs.

The ceremony started as the flower girls joyously skipped over the hill with mossy baskets of red rose petals flying through the air! We said our vows, had our kiss, and immediately ran through a tunnel of loving family and friends for our getaway in a vintage, turquoise Chevrolet pick up truck.

We both love vintage items that have a story, so the table settings were a collection of old books, cameras, type writers and other items that helped tell the story of the bride and groom. Messages about the our love and interests were typed and in frames on the tables. A local group of jazz musicians and Pappy’s Barbeque got the party started quickly! The cake was made by a local ASU student almond flavored with butter cream icing - and topped with a model, vintage truck similar to the one used in the ceremony. We found it on a previous excursion to the High Country at Mast General Store in Valle Crucis. We danced, the bride lip synced a song for her new groom, and we watched a gorgeous sun set over the pond and hills. To finish off the ceremony, we released Thai Sky lanterns into the dark night sky, and asked the guests to send their prayers, hopes, and dreams up for the bride and groom’s future together. 54 • highcountryweddingguide.com

Brooke and Casey Brooke Jenkins and Casey Hough May 22, 2010 | Blowing Rock, NC

Our story...

Casey and I met in Winston-Salem in January 2007 through a mutual friend. After dating for over two years, we went to Boone one weekend where Casey proposed out on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Beacon Heights. Boone and Blowing Rock hold a special place in both of our hearts since we are ASU graduates and love the area. We began searching for wedding venues in the High Country and Casey discovered Westglow Resort and Spa. Although we both attended Appalachian State, we had never been to Westglow and fell in love with it upon our visit. Our wedding weekend began with all of the guys playing a round of golf at Boone Golf Club while the girls attended a bridesmaids luncheon at Westglow, hosted by my aunt and cousin. The rehearsal dinner took place at Kidd Brewer Stadium on ASU’s campus and was catered by the Daniel Boone Inn. The morning of the wedding, the girls shared breakfast and proceeded to have hair and make-up done by the Westglow Salon. It was extremely foggy and rained on and off throughout the day. About one hour before the ceremony, the sky opened up and the sun was shining! Our ceremony took place at 4:30 p.m. on the outdoor courtyard overlooking Old John’s River Gorge we were surrounded by family and our closest friends.

57 • highcountryweddingguide.com

After the ceremony, our guests proceeded to Westglow’s Daingerfield Mansion, where we enjoyed views of the famed Grandfather Mountain profile. Guests were greeted with freshly squeezed lemonade, wine spritzers, hor d’oeuvres, wine, beer and music from a baby grand piano. After the cocktail hour, our guests transitioned back to the tented courtyard area. Our ceremony site was transformed into a beautiful reception. where our

wedding party was announced to The Black Eyed Peas, “I’ve Got a Feeling,” and special dances followed. Guests were invited to enjoy the most delicious buffet, created by the Westglow culinary team. It consisted of Caesar salad, saffron poached Tazmanian salmon with tomato-cilantro orzo and lemongrass-coconut sauce, grilled vegetables, pinot noir marinated and grilled flank steak with roasted potatoes, and wild mushroom applewood-smoked bacon sauce. After we cut a delectible lemon cake with raspberry jam filling and buttercreme icing in the gazebo, guests were left to enjoy the remainder of the evening with dancing and music! We knew our special day would be simply wonderful, but because of our family, friends, location and all of our incredible vendors, our day was more than perfect! It was very humbling and we felt blessed by everyone and everything that made our entire wedding weekend truly feel like a dream come true.

1. UNIQUE STYLE

9 Wedding

“Take advantage of the online blogs, wedding magazines, and professionals, all great resources to help get a plan in action. Incorporate things that two of you love to do together. Create your own style and vision based on who you are as a couple such as your favorite foods, hobbies, colors, music, places you have traveled together, and more. Make an effort to set aside time and pull photos together of color schemes and decor ideas. Consider your venue as blank canvas and you both the artists creating your masterpiece.”

Elizabeth Hempfling, Events by Elizabeth Ashley

2. GUESTS ROOM “Be sure to have a solid guest list before choosing a venue. There is nothing worse than inviting more people than the venue can accommodate. If you find your dream venue but it can’t accommodate your numbers, you may have to compromise and cut your guest list or search for another location.” Jennifer Williams, Westglow Resort & Spa

3. GRACIOUS FLEXIBILITY “Changes are inevitable. If you can go with the flow and be at ease with change, your guests will never know the difference. Remain flexible and everyone will think you are the most gracious of brides. Expect hiccups, last minute changes and adjustments. If the organization and preparation are tightly in place, then the last-minute challenges are not nearly so worrisome.” Heather Hutchison, The Wedding Specialist

Planning Tips 4. BUDGET-MINDED

“If you have a tight budget, be sure to calculate all of the costs of your wedding attire. Gown prices start at around $100. If your budget is $1,000, be sure to choose a bridal store that has gowns within your range. Don’t forget to factor in the veil and headpiece, which can run from $50 to $500 -- as well as your shoes, lingerie, jewelry, and alterations.” Donna Cook, Did Someone Say Party?

5. FOOD FACTOR “Decide if your reception will be formal, a seated dinner, or a buffet. Seated dinner is often less expensive than an open buffet. If you choose a buffet, remember that stations are best so your guests don’t have to stand in long lines.”

Rachael Mills, High Country Wedding Guide

6. PHOTO PATIENCE “Be patient to receive your photos. Remember that it often requires the photographer more time to edit your pictures than it does to shoot them, especially in the digital age when some are shooting upwards of 4,000 pictures per wedding. A photographer is likely to edit down 500-600 final pictures, with each picture individually corrected for color and contrast. This is a very time-consuming task that should not be rushed.” Matt Powell, Matt Powell Photography

7. THOUGHTFUL FLOWERS “As a designer, what I am looking for from the bride is to hear her heart. I want to listen to her thoughts and ideas and I want to learn the vision she has for her wedding day. I want to collect all the parts and pieces and give them back to her in that one single moment.” Sheri Furman, Bless Your Heart

8. MAKING MUSIC “Check out the band’s playlist and ask if the musicians are willing to play or learn your personal favorites. Also, don’t forget to discuss what the band will wear when performing and if an iPod with your selections can be played during the breaks. Be sure to discuss overtime costs in case you don’t want the party to end. As for the DJ, it is important to get a sense of his or her personality. Ask for a past client list and ask specific questions about the DJ’s performance. Heather Hutchison, The Wedding Specialist

9. HONEYMOON SAVVY “There is a myth that you can save money by booking a honeymoon online when actually you can save more with a travel consultant. Consultants have rates not available to the general public, as well as bulk rates. Suppliers build costs into every vacation, including online. Honeymoons booked with travel consultants get maximum facilities on reasonable rates. Honeymooners pay no extra money by using a travel consultant and they can often find better pricing and provide more personal service than any website. Suppliers are actively courting them and offering value priced promotions. ” Wendy Snider, Gateway to Vacations 62 • highcountryweddingguide.com

Megan and Luke

Megan Cline and Luke Hutchinson October 2, 2010 | Blowing Rock, NC

Our story...

Luke and I met in 2003 while attending ASU and working at the popular Woodlands Barbecue in Blowing Rock. Six years, two dogs, and three moves later, Luke proposed by the Christmas tree of our new home in Raleigh. We knew right away the High Country would host our celebration. Our families and many of our closest friends live there, and we were sure out-of-towners would enjoy a weekend in God’s country. Autumn in Boone has always been our favorite time of year. ASU football, the crisp air and the colorful leaves makes us feel at home. We wanted our wedding to reflect our love of Boone’s surroundings – our beloved Mountaineers, the rocks of Hebron, the water of the Watauga River and, of course, the breathtaking views. After reviewing many locations, we fell in love with the Inn at Crestwood. Not only did they offer the scenery we longed for, but also the charming inn fit our rustic vision and the staff was a pleasure to work with. I started and ended my dress search at Did Someone Say Party. Donna was so fun to be around and extremely helpful; suggesting different dresses, cuts and fabrics until I found the one. She made sure I was 100 percent happy with every detail and made herself available to help in any way. We started our weekend with a delicious rehearsal dinner at the Best Cellar. Here, Luke’s father surprised us with a beautifully handcrafted sign bearing our names, which was hung on the ceremony

arbor with floral garland. Susan Wright of Shady Grove Gardens somehow took our rambling ideas and skillfully extracted our vision. The moment I first saw the bouquets and centerpieces my jaw dropped. “Exactly!” is all I could say. Our wedding day was one of pure joy. Excitement and celebration filled the air and we had not a care in the world. Our day-of coordinator, Megan Harvey, relieved our stress and had everything under control. We had our closest friends and family standing by our sides, bright blue sky and views for days – but in that moment, it was only Luke and I. 65 • highcountryweddingguide.com

We celebrated late into the night, feasting on southern favorites, dancing to great tunes and making memories in our homemade photobooth. Guests were given Yosef chocolates and we took a Woodlands Barbecue family photo since many of our guests worked there at one time or another. We were so blessed to have the talented Katie Langley capture the day. She was full of energy and creativity. Katie was always there to capture a smile, laugh or tear. Looking back, it all passed so quickly, but we now relive the experience through her work. We are grateful to our friends and family for ushering us into this next stage in life, and will always remember the day we were married on our mountain. 66 • highcountryweddingguide.com

Hali and Jim

Hali Collins and Jim Pyles June 26, 2010 | Boone, NC

Our story...

After Jim proposed to me, he whisked me away to a weekend retreat in the mountains. That same day, I saw my dress hanging in the window of Did Someone Say Party bridal shop. I knew right away I wanted to get married in the High Country. I am from Michigan, but I relocated to Winston Salem three years ago and had no clue about venues in the mountains. When I purchased my dress, I saw the magazine High Country Wedding Guide and it helped me through every step of planning my dream mountain wedding! Choosing a photographer was the main priority on our list. Once I talked to Misty and Ryan from Pixels on Paper, I knew the search was over. Their pictures from previous weddings were gorgeous and they quickly became friends. We recited our vows to each other at First Baptist Church on King Street in front of 100 guests. Reverend Rick Webster surprised us when he asked us to each bring a salt shaker from our parents home to the ceremony and had us each pour our salt into a bowl as a way to start our new life as one.

After the ceremony, we headed to downtown Blowing Rock for pictures. It was amazing walking with our 12-person wedding party and have locals stop and congratulate us. The Meadowbrook Inn was home to our out-of-town guests, as well as the location of our reception. Guests were treated to my favorite meal: barbecued chicken, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, and green beans. Each place setting was topped with a glass bottle of old-fashioned Cheerwine as a party favor to take home. I thought it was a great way to honor my new home in North Carolina and give guests from Michigan a taste! Looking back, we were so happy to have spent time with our family and friends who traveled so far just to be with us on our special day. We had fun dancing our first dance to “Stand by Me” and then joining our guests on the dance floor for “YMCA.” We enjoyed the signature bride and groom drinks, “Collins Blue Bomber” and “Pyles Pink Pterodactyl.” I could not have asked for a better day! 69 • highcountryweddingguide.com

Ella and Brandon Ella Stout and Brandon Peterson May 22, 2010 | Spruce Pine, NC

Our story...

Brandon and I were engaged at Elk River Falls, and like most girls, immediately after the engagement I began thinking about wedding plans. The High Country has been our home since birth, and we decided this was where we wanted to get married, surrounded by our family and friends. We knew from the beginning we wanted to incorporate rustic wood products and butterflies in memory of two special family members who passed away and couldn’t be with us. Brandon’s father spent most of his life in the woods as a logger and saw mill operator. When it came time to plan the wedding, we could think of no better way to remember him and the special influence he had on our lives, than to use the product he spent his life working with. With the help of Dale’s Forestry Services we were able to acquire unique natural wood focal points.

The butterflies were placed in honor of my maternal grandmother, who spent 36 years in the public school system teaching math and science. The life cycles she taught in science helped bring about a fondness of butterflies that she carried throughout her life. Through these details, we were able to celebrate the lives of two very special people and remember most importantly that we can have a “transformed life made possible through the cross of Jesus Christ,” 2 Corinthians 5:17. On our wedding day, I was truly blessed because I felt completely stress free. I was so excited to walk down the aisle with my mother and father and marry the man God gave me. Words can’t describe how beautifully everything fell into place. From the programs to the flowers, to the delicious meal and cake at the reception, to the music and photography. I wouldn’t have changed one detail. Each of our vendors allowed Brandon and I to enjoy our day, while they each fulfilled their responsibilities to the last detail. We will never be able to thank enough the family, friends, and vendors who shared our new beginning with us. 73 • highcountryweddingguide.com
