OFF THE GRID and OUT OF THIS WORLD

T

UCKED INTO AN UNASSUMING CORNER OF APPLE VALLEY IS AN ADVENTURE IN FLAVOR — a family-friendly, unique experience for those of us craving something fun and special. Founded in 2011by the Schneider family, Off the Grid Brewing Company is a labor of love, created not just for fun, but as a legacy designed to give back to the community they grew up in. When you visit this warm, down-home, comfortable establishment, anyone who serves you will be a Schneider — John Sr., brothers Mike, John and George, or one of their friendly spouses. This young family takes pride in their venture and they want your experience to be special. Their menu — an adventurous and growing collection of 15 lovingly crafted microbrews — features a lively, robust Imperial Red ale (Trailblazer) a lovely golden Hefeweizen Dawn Patrol), and a deliciously different Cold-brewed coffee lager. The Schneider family is always looking for ways to push the limits of flavor excitement. This is not some slap-dash process. A brew can take three to six weeks to ferment before it’s ready to be transferred into kegs. As I spoke with Sabrina Schneider about all the things that make Off the Grid so special, the delicious aroma of oatmeal stout was wafting out from one of the four gleaming fermenters. It was heady and swoonworthy. She observed that there is a generosity of spirit between the local brewers that enriches and inspires their entire community. Off the Grid wants you to remember that they welcome all ages in their establishment. Because it is a production company, not a bar, you can bring the entire family to enjoy a brewing tour where you can learn about the alchemy and artistry of beer, and be entertained by live music or comedy in a fun, low-key cozy environment afterwards. If you’re all about taking your adventure out into your own wilderness, make sure to pick up one of their tough, trademark metal growlers of your favorite brew to go, so you can have your own Off the Grid adventure. — Elisa Urmston Off the Grid is bringing fresh, hand-crafted microbrews designed for taste, smoothness, and quality to the High Desert Thursday and Friday from 4-9 pm, Saturday, from 12-9 pm, and Sunday from 12-5 pm.

LOCAL HEALTHY FOOD SPOTS

ARE YOU GOING TO EAT THAT? HEALTHY HD LIVING

S

O, WHAT’S FOR LUNCH? Did you see the recipe I shared on Pinterest? Who’s catering your party? Frank just posted another foodie picture again! Nom, nom, nom… Food — it piques everyone’s interest. It’s always on our minds (sing it, Willie!). It’s the center, most popular attraction at events, and it comforts us like no other friend. The aroma alone can bring back the fondest of memories. And, well…it’s kind of a necessity. Now, what if I had used the term “diet” instead? If you look up the word, the first definition that pops up is usually somewhat comparable to what I found on the MerriamWebster site: “Food and drink regularly provided or consumed.” Well, okay — that’s not so bad. Of course, that’s when it’s considered a noun. When used as a verb, it suddenly takes and ugly turn: “To eat less food or to eat only particular kinds of food in order to lose weight.” Bah! Dislike. The thrill is gone… But, does it have to be? Eating well isn’t just a fad, and it’s not always about losing weight. It doesn’t have to be difficult or tasteless, and definitely shouldn’t throw you into deprivation distress. However, a healthy diet is essential for those striving to maintain good physical and mental health. It’s just a matter of a shift in mindset, seeking options, daring to attempt diversity, and asking questions. That being said, you should probably be warned. If you let folks know that you’re looking to change your diet, there’s a huge chance you’ll be bombarded with wellmeant advice, whether you want it or not. Vegetarian, gluten-free, high-protein, vegan, low-carb,

16 High Desert Living magazine

dairy-free, Paleolithic, low-fat, grain-free, Atkins, sugar-free, clean-eating—the list of popular plans can go on for pages... and I’d bet the ranch (I have a ranch?) that your friends will try to convince you that their plan is the absolute best. However, every plan labeled healthy is not necessarily healthy for every body. Really, your diet plan should be just that: your diet plan. It should be customized by you and your doctor, specific to your own personal needs. Figuring out what works best for you is probably the hardest part. The rest is…cake, as long as you can locate tasty, healthy fare and you can navigate recipe directions well enough to prepare a few good meals. So, where do you find such fine fare? Here, in the HD, we actually have wholesome, Facebook-nom-nom-worthy alternatives accessible to help us keep our diets on point and our taste buds well-pleased.

HEALTHY HD EATS For superior selection and quality, BJ’s Health Foods, located at 12125 Balsam Rd in Victorville, offers an extensive range of organic, all-natural foods and supplements. After a successful shopping spree at BJ’s Health Foods, you won’t feel the least bit deprived. Imported produce is often picked way too early, sprayed with chemicals to heighten the ripening process, and then shipped

to stores. The High Desert Farmer’s Market provides locally grown, farm-fresh produce that has been ripened naturally, which means they’re highly rich in nutritional value. In addition to outstanding produce, you’ll also be happy to know they offer homemade baked goods, handmade organic soap, and much, much more. A favorite of many shoppers, Tonyan Coffee can also be found at the market, and indeed, it’s organic as well! And, if you’d like a little help learning how to prepare your fresh purchases, the High Desert Farmer’s Market offers information to educate the public on smart ways to purchase, store, and prepare delicious fresh food. Located at 18422 Bear Valley Rd (Victor Valley College lower campus), you’ll find the market available on Thursday mornings, between 8:00 and 12:00. To find out more and get some great recipes, browse highdesertfarmersmarket.com. Craving fast food? We’ve got your back…or, your taste buds! Make your way to 12120 Ridge Crest Rd, Suite #101 in Victorville, and you’ll discover Down Home Grill. Tasty, homestyle, and prepared with the freshest ingredients, Down Home Grill offers organic grass-fed beef, organics eggs, and a variety of non-GMO and gluten-free choices. Vegetarian selections are available, as well, such as their mouthwatering portabella mushroom burger, veggie burgers, and a selection of salads. And, ah…the fresh cut fries—so good! If you’re trying to cut back on fried foods, their diverse menu provides many options, such as the Pineapple Habenero Alaskan Salmon and Quinoa dish. It’s topped with a delicious glaze, completely glutenfree, and created without the use of high-fructose corn syrup. Reasonable, guilt-free family dining—they’ve got it down. Chain restaurants such as Flame Broiler, Panera Bread, and Juice It Up also offer healthy choices. In fact, numerous restaurants, including fast food eateries, offer healthy menu options nowadays. You just need to seek them out, or simply ask your server for recommended selections.

HEALTHY COOKING/BAKING HABITS Once you’ve figured out how you should eat and have done some strategic shopping, it’s really not that difficult to adjust your own cooking habits to ensure a healthier regimen. I was told by my own doctor that I needed to be on a high protein/ low carb diet. As a lover of all carbs, sweet and savory, I have to admit I felt a bit abused. But, then I went online, did a little research, and found countless dinner recipes that turned out to be quite delicious. I learned to make almond flour (grind almonds to a fine powder-that’s it), and I’ve discovered delightful recipes for breads, cookies, brownies—all sorts of magnificent treats. An avid chip lover, I sought options and found Beanitos (chips made from beans). They’re not only tasty and quite marvelous with guacamole, but they’re also an enjoyable source of protein. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfortable box to try new and healthy alternatives; a few simple changes can make all the difference. You may find yourself pleasantly surprised and, in the process, extend your life…and possibly the lives of those who love you most. — Stephanie Morris

Perfect for Every Body

JANN BROWNE’S DOWN-HOME DREAMS Singer/songwriter Jann Browne, perhaps best known for her hit songs “Mexican Wind,” “You Ain’t Down Home,” and “Tell Me Why,” as well as a successful stint as the lead female vocalist for the band Asleep at the Wheel sat down for a few minutes with me to get us all caught up on what she is up to these days. EU: Thank you for making a little time to let us know what you’re doing with your music and your life. JB: Thanks, girlfriend. Yep, I’ve been busy singing, playing, and doing enough to keep me content. I’m contemplating a new album and a European tour, because I still have a lot of fans and friends there. EU: ARE YOU PLANNING ANY US TOURS TO PROMOTE YOUR UPCOMING ALBUM? JB: I don’t do a lot of stateside work; the road is not calling me these days. I’d like to focus more on small tours, writing, and rescuing animals. If things go according to plan, the album will be released in about six months, maybe on vinyl, even. I’ve always wanted to do a vinyl record. When I came on the scene, the vinyl era had just ended. I have a few 45s that fans still find on eBay now and then, but the idea of an entire vinyl album is a wish-list thing.

18 High Desert Living magazine

EU: You are not just famous for your feisty brand classic American Country music, but your love of animals, and you mentioned rescuing animals earlier in our conversation. Would you like to talk about that? JB: Yes! I just applied for a 501c3 (a non-profit organization status), and I’m looking to get out of the Sandbox (Browne’s humorous term for the desert) and relocate to a 15-20 acre ranch where I can focus on rescuing not just dogs, but other critters. There are so many animals in need and hurting, and I lose sleep over it. My goal is to have a sanctuary—I’m passionate about it. EU: Back to the music… is there anything you might want to tell us about the creative process of making your new album? JB: Well, it’s been a year since I’ve had an iPod, a CD player, or even a radio in my car! I’ve purposely isolated myself from the music out there, so it’ll be interesting to see what develops without any external influences. EU: So stay tuned, then? JB: Yes! Stay tuned.

HD HEALTH MATTERS

EMBRACING PLAYING BY THE RULES

22 High Desert Living magazine

WHEN IT COMES TO RULES, MOST PEOPLE CAN BE PLACED INTO ONE OF THREE CATEGORIES. Group one is those who like rules and find that they are beneficial, helpful, bring structure, and provide safety. Group two consists of those who don’t like rules and feel that they are restrictive, intrusive, and not applicable. Group three people are kind of a middle ground in that they recognize that they may not like the rules and didn’t make the rules themselves, but also understand that they have to play by the rules. So lets think of a few rules that we all know about—things like speed limits, the golden rule, no hands in soccer unless you are the goalie— but think about this for a minute: what would a sporting event be without rules? Imagine going to a football game where the players run out of bounds, kick the ball randomly, throw the ball back and forth constantly, put too many players on the field at one time… I am willing to bet that fans wouldn’t enjoy the game as much as they do currently with the rules providing a level playing field, and referees tasked with the role of unbiased enforcement of the rules to the best of their ability. So we should all agree that rules are good.

So now that I got you thinking, “where is he going with this?” and, “what does this have to do with health?” Let’s switch gears. Group one folks will love to know that our health, for the most part, can be based on the rules we follow; good or bad. Yes, our body likes to go to bed every day at the same time, wake up at the same time, eat meals at the same time, and exercise at the same time. Our body operates to its peak performance with simple rules that state we need proper nourishment, for fuel, repair, hormones, and more. There really is no going around the fact that these simple rules are what are necessary for optimal health. There are no special supplements, drugs, home remedies, or special work outs to cheat the fact that we have to put time and money into developing, and executing, rules to live by. Recently, however the FDA has approved a new device that its critics have stated, “the device is an enabling device, not a helping device.” The device is intended for obese people at least 22 years old who have not been able to loose weight through other approaches, excluding surgery. The device allows patients to suck out about 30% of the food they just consumed, before calories are absorbed into

FALL/WINTER 2016

HERE ARE FEW HEALTH RULES TO LIVE BY TO GET YOU STARTED: • No Trans fats • Participate in some amount of • No food additives activity daily • No GMO food • No sugary drinks • No artificial food coloring • Buy organic • No added sweeteners • Decrease stress • Eat more vegetables • No artificial sweeteners • Set bed time and wake up time • Stop eating foods that are not • Get about 8 hours of sleep tolerated well (it surprises me how many patients continue • Chew your food thoroughly • Plan you meal times to eat dairy with a lactose • Food prep intolerance) the body. What they do is implant a tube into your stomach which is connected to a valve at the skin. About 20–30 minutes after a meal the patient will go to the restroom and connect an external apparatus and open the valve and allow their food to drain into the toilet. They will flush water back into the stomach and repeat for a second drainage. The FDA approved this device after reviewing a study that showed patients using the device for one year lost an average of 12.1% of body weight while the control lost

www.hdlivingmagazine.com

3.6%. Please consider that 12% weight loss in one year is not really that much, and secondly that the study didn’t mention what kind of weight was lost. Was it fat? Was it muscle? Was it water? The FDA warns of side effects including “occasional indigestion, nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhea” as well as side effects from the placement of the tube such as sore throat to bleeding, pneumonia, and irritations around the valve. Again critics are concerned that in reality patients will eat what ever they want and just suck it out. Who thinks this is the most appropriate solution for this problem? Lets think more deeply about what is going on here. I don’t want to sound too callused, but in short people often are not taking responsibility for their own health, for their own choices. We have a choice, every day, what we eat, what we drink, who we talk to, how we spend my money. Americans are looking for an external solution for an internal problem. The reason why many of these programs, surgeries, drugs, and supplements fail is because we are taking the same person, with the same thinking, same values, same will power, same weaknesses, same emotions, same support system, and putting them into different programs. Truth is, these individual need to change their insides before they can expect to see long lasting changes on the outside. Our mind, emotions, environment, habits, values, morals, purpose, strengths, and weaknesses will dictate what choices we make. I was speaking to another doctor this past week and we got around to discussing the rules of health that we both personally live

by. He went on further to share that he and his wife are just about to the point they don’t like to take vacations much anymore because it gets them so far off track. The vacations disrupt their sleeping habits, their exercise routines, their eating habits, their supplement habits, and that by the time they get to the end of their trip, they feel lethargic, deal with more brain fog, feel weaker, experience less restful sleep, and are generally less healthy. The take away message here is that we all need to establish rules for our health that we live by. Think about these questions: do you want to be healthy, feel your best, balance your blood sugar, have mental clarity, increase your functional ability? What rules do you need to establish and live by to increase your health? Who is knowledgeable enough to help you choose which rules to implement and how? What support structure do you need to help you with these new health rules? What emotions could be holding you back from succeeding in your new health rules? What do you value the most? Is your health a top priority worthy of investing your time and money into? Look, our goal is not to try to live forever; only God knows the number of our days, but what we want to do is to add life to our years.

HD LOCAL PERSONALITIES

THE SANTA FE DRIFTERS Your local gunslingers at work! has appeared in over 150 movies, TV shows and commercials including Django Unchained, Street Eyes, Night Crew, Blood Sun Town, and Tales of the Frontier to name but a few credits. Gunfighters compete at shows such as the San Bernardino County Fair. Accuracy is tantamount to authenticity. Boots (They must be round-toed), weapons, and all other aspects of the show must be authentic or if reproduction, the items must be approved by the judges. Judges can disqualify a gunman who does not comply. Guns must represent the period in which they were made and must be real and appropriate for the period represented. Bullets must be original. Even the poker chips, if that is part of the skit, must be correct for the period. The gunfighters can be disqualified if all elements of the skit are not authentic, and if the skit is not completed within the time limit, which is usually 18 minutes, that counts against the group. The Drifters recently won top honors in the following FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO EXPERIENCED THE EXCITEMENT of the Santa Fe Drifters gunfight at the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds this year, you may have gotten the idea that you were watching a bunch of guys goofing around, having a good time Old-West style. Well, you are right about that, they love what they do and have a great time doing it, but goofing around they were not. These guys are professionally trained stunt men, willing to suffer bruises, cuts, broken bones and occasionally even risk their lives to portray the Old West gunfight. What appear to be easy antics on the surface require years of practice and schooling, and all are trained on gun safety with a review before each show. The group’s organizer, James A.E. Fuentez says, “there’s no room for daredevils.” Fuentez, who has worked in movies and commercials, as well as, shows and competitions, says that one of the most dangerous stunts is the high fall. He related that one of his colleagues missed what is called the landing bag breaking his leg in two places. Fuentez, himself, has been set on what is called “full-body fire” which besides being dangerous is one of the more difficult and uncomfortable stunts. It involves wearing protection so that he doesn’t catch on fire, but the heat is tremendous, and the stuntman must hold his breath at least 30 seconds, while running around covered in flames, to avoid injury. Fuentez was born into the business. His father was a stunt man, who taught him the ropes. Pun intended? Well, maybe…Who knows? Fuentez, who is also known as Drifter, has been in the business for more than 30 years, and takes great pride in his work. He

The skits are comical, and their names reflect that. Among them: Born Loser, Fire at Will, and Drinks On Me, and the award-winning Card Sharks skit. The group will perform for various functions including weddings — also known as the “Shotgun Wedding” — and other events. Tere Kidd CONTACT INFORMATION James A. E. Fuente: (760) 680-6720

MIRROR MIRROR? WE ALL HUMBLY ENTREAT: Who’s the fairest of them all? Well, maybe not all, but our hope is that we’ll be able to look at ourselves in the mirror and be happy with what we see. We are all looking for Snow White in our reflection, and dread finding the ancient witch, a.k.a. the queen. In our youth, we tend not to appreciate our young faces as much as we should. That precious gift bestowed by our parents is something we take for granted, and we engage in all sorts of maneuvers to make ourselves more appealing. At this point, most of us rely on the help we can get from a salon and a good beauty routine. Most of us, especially females, try all sorts of make-up, hairstyles, exercise, diets, and clothing to make ourselves as appealing as possible. That’s where Mirror, Mirror comes in. When Kim Plasch, who has been in the beauty business for 14 years, happened to pass a building that had been vacated by another salon, she saw a great opportunity to go one step further with her career and become the owner of a salon. She, of course, took a look around the property on Outer Highway 18 in Apple Valley and was so enchanted by what she saw that she immediately took it. “I didn’t even talk to my husband. I was that excited,”

www.hdlivingmagazine.com

Plasch explains. She gave the building a makeover (pun intended), and created a beautiful contemporary space, including a blow dry bar, to accommodate her clients. She has created a truly pleasant experience offering complimentary wine or beer, coffee or tea to ensure your comfort. Open for over a year now, Mirror, Mirror includes all the essential services, such as pedicures and manicures, as well as on-staff esthetician Frank Flores, who works with Dermalogica, a line of skin care products and she expects to bring on board a barber soon to complement her crew of hair stylists. Mirror, Mirror, also, offers a limited line of clothing Plasch describes as bohemian or gypsy. Experience Mirror, Mirror for yourself, where their motto is “You’re the fairest of them all.”— Tere Kidd

Joshua Tree Adventures

W

HEN IT COMES TO DESERTS, many people think that when you have seen one, you have seen them all. They envision vast sandy moonscapes—places to cross in order to get to destinations beyond the gravel and greasewoods. Just an hour’s drive from the Victor Valley, however, is a place that will inspire wonder in the most jaded of wanderers. Joshua Tree National Park is a desert wonderland where two ecosystems—the Mojave and the Colorado Deserts— meet. It is a mecca for those who love hiking, camping, rock climbing, wildlife viewing, or experiencing a relatively light pollution-free star gazing experience. Strange, beautiful rockscapes and wondrous, lush desert plants combine to create an otherworldly place that is transformative. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, as the temperatures can vary drastically from place to place in the park. Joshua Tree National Park covers a diverse range of climates and elevations, ranging from 536 feet above sea level to 5814 feet above sea level atop Quail Mountain. Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks, and recognize that cell phone reception can be spotty at best. Safety is, after all, your responsibility.

While you’re in the area, be sure to stop in and visit Pappy and Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace — a desert tradition since 1982 — where you will find live music, good times, cold drinks, and a mouthwatering menu of mesquite-grilled delights (I recommend the Santa Maria steak, served with their amazing potatoes, but they offer vegetarian fare, as well). If those hallowed adobe walls could talk, they would tell you about the musical icons who have graced the intimate stage, from Robert Plant to Eric Burden to Paul McCartney. When I played there, Rory Calhoun was a frequent guest, as were Victoria Williams and Jim Lauderdale. You might not always spot a celebrity when you visit, but you will have a memorable evening. Pappy and Harriet’s is open Thursday through Sunday, from 11:00 am until 2:00 am, and they are open at 5:00 pm for dinner on Monday. They are closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

KELLY SMILE DENTISTRY OF APPLE VALLEY Dr. Kelly Hong DDS 18064 Wika Rd #101, Apple Valley (760) 946-6077 www.mydentistapplevalley.com

www.hdlivingmagazine.com

DR. KELLY KNEW AT A VERY YOUNG AGE SHE WOULD BE A DENTIST. She still recalls that day when her grandfather‘s grumpy look was replaced by a new smile. It was his new set of teeth that made him smile. She said to herself “I’ll give everybody new teeth so they can be happy”. Dr. Kelly came to the U.S. as a bright eyed teenager without two nickels to rub together, with only her dream of making it in this great country and fulfilling her goal of becoming a dentist. Along the way her dream grew to becoming the dentist to the stars and becoming the best cosmetic dentist she could be. 12 plus years later, she now successfully owns two practices. She believes her embrace of technology is what separates her from the average dentist; as evidence by the state of the art equipment in both of her offices. She is also proactive and believes that being a dentist is a never ending learning experience through the countless hours of continuing education to stay on top of her craft. Patients come from all walks of life and from all over the Country and beyond. The biggest compliment comes from her own patients when they refer their friends and family. Dr. Kelly has seen her share of stars and witnessed many frowns turn to smiles. “I think I am most proud of my philanthropy work. I’ve been privileged to travel to third world countries and help children and the elderly smile again. I can honestly say that their smiles are what keep me going. My grandfather is 92 years old now and he is still smiling”!

WINE TRENDS

LOCAL HIDDEN TREASURES: SYCAMORE RANCH WINERY & VINEYARDS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A WINE -LOVING LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT TAKES POSSESSION OF A RUSTIC APPLE FARM in the scenic San Bernardino Mountains? Enchantment. Abundance. Magic! When Richard and Elizabeth Krumwiede purchased their Crestline, Dart Canyon property in 1999, they knew they held 3.5 acres of something special, but they had no clue it would morph into a picturesque fount for award winning wines and hard ciders. Richard initiated the endeavor with some creative landscaping, clearing and terracing the grounds. He then began cultivating, planting Zinfandel and Syrah vines. Soon the lush terrain was rich with grapes, accompanied by raspberries, blackberries, cherries, pears, and bountiful apples trees. The first batch of wine they produced wasn’t quite palate pleasing; however, the hard cider they generated rocked from the get-go! As their vineyard and vinification techniques flourished, a vital co-op was formed, and together they began purchasing premium grapes from vineyards of the Paso Robles /Central Coast AVA areas. All the while, Richard honed his expertise and skill via the Winemaking Certification Program at UC Davis. When you take fructiferous land, superb grapes, and priceless support and you blend it with experience, passion, and education—well, the result is a phenomenal fusion and a recipe for topnotch wine! Now, a bona fide licensed and bonded winery, Sycamore Ranch Winery & Vineyards produces some of the finest, award winning wine in the area. Judges at the Orange County Fair Home Wine Competition bestowed the Sycamore Ranch team with Double Gold ribbons for their 2013 Primitivo, 2014 Primitivo, and 2014 Syrah. They received Gold status for their 2013 SGM (Syrah/Grenache/Mouvedre) and Silver for their 2013 Zinfandel, 2014 Rhone Ranger, 2014 Petite Syrah, and 2014 Grenache.

The

Wine Seller If you’re a hard cider fan, you HAVE to try their Big Moon, Razzlelberry, and One Frog ciders. Made onsite with a medley of farm-fresh apples, they are refreshingly dry and crisp and dazzle the taste buds like no other hard cider I’ve sampled. The bottles alone are a work of art, thanks to the creativity of local Crestline artist, John Arthur. But…Sycamore Ranch Winery & Vineyards, isn’t just about substance and proficiency—oh no! The glorious landscape is stunningly beautiful as well. It’s so captivating, in fact, that its vineyards, orchards, and lavish gardens have been featured in Sunset Magazine, as well as Organic Gardening Magazine. And, Richard and Elizabeth aren’t so bad themselves! Wine snobs, they are not. Quite the contrary, they are welcoming, personable, and fun hosts. If you’d like to sample a little taste of heaven for yourself, give them a call at 909-338-1725 to set up a tasting appointment/tour and get directions. At this time, to ensure guests their undivided attention, they will accommodate small groups of 6-8 people. You can also email inquiries to rwk@ sycamoreranch.com and locate them easily on Facebook. For those interested in the artwork of John Arthur, be sure to pay a visit to http://www.johnarthur.com. — Stephanie Morris Cheers!

WINE RECOMMENDATION Celebrate autumn with Sycamore Ranch’s 2015 Ranche Rosé! Light and airy, ripe and juicy—Ranch Rosé’s lovely bouquet of ruby grapefruit and hints of strawberry is complementary to most any fall fare, and its brilliant color will add flare to your party and elegance to your glass. Its composition is 60% Syrah, 40% Granache. So, so good.

SUSAN’S CORNER

THE SADDEST TRUTH: BY SUSAN LANDERS

So, occasionally, my friend and H.D. Living Colleague, Stephanie Morris and I take little one day adventures—daycays, if you will. We have gone to San Diego more than once, up to Ventura and beyond to Santa Maria and Ojai; we’ve travelled up HWY 395 as far as we could to spend time having fun and still get back home before dark—that trip took us through Lone Pine to Bishop and on to Lee Vining before we turned back to head home. These trips created some of my very favorite memories. Last year, Steph and I spent a day in Lake Arrowhead Village, a very short hop as far as driving goes, but it feels miles away from my real life world. While in Arrowhead, we happened to stop inside a doggie bakery to buy some treats for our respective four-legged kids, and Steph remarked on the fact that some dogs live awful, abused, horrible lives while other dogs get *this* as she waved her hand at all the baked goodies made just for dogs. I remarked that this is the inherent unfairness in the world--Steph and I got to have terrific, loving families growing up, and we get to live our lives the way we want, doing what we want, and some people are born into abusive homes or oppressive cultures that would punish us for our gender. While we were free to pursue college degrees, some girls and women are threatened with physical harm, even death, for daring to want education or an independent life. While we are free to choose whom to marry or not to marry at all, to have children or not, some women must marry and bear children as a means of survival and have little to no choice in whom they marry. While I am beyond grateful for the wonderful things I have in my life, it gnaws at me that not everyone can have the good things I and my friends and my dogs have just because of an accident of birth or a collision of bad circumstances. Why did I win the wonderful parents and siblings jackpot? Why do I get to have literacy, meaningful work, a roof over my head, clothes on my back, and food on my table when so many others do not? How did I get so fortunate? It’s overwhelming to think about because the problems of poverty, illiteracy, human rights abuses, and so many other issues are enormous, beyond what any one person can do to fix, so we do what we can, but it is a pebble in an ocean of badness. Sometimes I cry at the injustice, horrors, and awful things we see going on--so much so that I just want to hate the whole world and hide in a cave. But, all I can do is go on trying to see the beauty, love, and goodness that live beside the wicked, bad, and nasty. I go on doing my little, random acts of kindness when the opportunity presents itself, offer what financial and physical support I can to people who are doing real good in the world for animals and others, and continue to be overwhelmingly grateful for all that I have been given. I think that is all we can do, but I just wish it were enough.
