ISTORIC ROUTE 66 IS FAMOUS FOR ITS QUIRKY LANDMARKS-- the vintage themed motels, mom-and-pop eateries, and funky roadside attractions are practically synonymous with the Mother Road. Here in Oro Grande, we have one of these extraordinary treasures in the form of Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch--an internationally renowned place (when I was there, I met a couple from Stuttgart and another from France) that found-objects artist Elmer Long has made his raison d’être since 2002. In doing so, Long has elevated the once- mundane into something truly magical. Here, a seemingly endless, dream-like grove of approximately 200 steel “trees”, festooned with a rainbow of repurposed glass bottles clink and whir like giant wind chimes in the afternoon breeze. Each tree is topped with odd upcycled materials, such as bicycle wheels, typewriters, sewing machines. Meanwhile, other antiques, old road signs, antlers, and unusual found objects seamlessly integrate with the surrounding desert. Linger and savor the way the light and wind play with the bottle trees and the way the various human cast-offs combine to create a serene, otherworldly jungle of transcendent outsider art. Be sure to show your appreciation by leaving a donation in the little box marked “tips.” — Elisa Urmston

HD WILD LIFE
YOGA & TAI CHI
Perfect for Every Body DESTINATION YOGA is a place to experience the calming and healing benefits of yoga practice, no matter who you are or where you are in life. Sick or well, old or young, male or female, Eastern or Western—this is a place for you. And don’t worry. You don’t have to be perfect or able to get into pretzel positions to practice yoga. Everyone can begin. Just come as you are. After all, yoga is about progress, not perfection. Destination Yoga opened in 2002, the first yoga studio ever in the High Desert, serving students from Victorville, Apple Valley, Barstow, Hesperia, Oak Hills, Lucerne Valley, and Big Bear. It was founded by Cheri Light, whose love for yoga inspired her to launch the studio. The goal was to offer yoga to everybody, to make its practice more approachable. Since the beginning, her mission has been to teach a fusion of styles, to guide students in a way that allows them to challenge themselves and make modifications when necessary. From Beginners’, Kids’ and Seniors’ classes to Pilates-yoga hybrids and Power levels, Destination Yoga classes are taught with an emphasis on positive motivation so students can experience yoga in mind, body and soul. In the West, the word yoga has often been interpreted to mean union between mind and body. Yoga physically tones, firms and strengthens your entire body. It increases body awareness and flexibility and also cleanses your system. However, there are more than just physical benefits from yoga. Increasingly, people are turning to yoga practice for stress relief and to create a peaceful life. In other words, yoga is not just about twisting and turning. It’s about listening, and moving into a place deep within you and being guided from there. Harmful thoughts and feelings start to subside, and a new sense of self begins to take hold. Then, negative habits tend to be more easily overcome. Yoga is thousands of years old, yet it
16 High Desert Living magazine
is new every time you practice. It’s a way of being rather than something you do--a way of uncovering and discovering who you really are. Like yoga, tai chi is a quiet form of movement that not only tones the body and improves balance, but also quiets and sharpens the mind. Created over a thousand years ago by Shaolin monks, the movements were intended to emulate the graceful movements of wild creatures. It was kept a secret for many years. Nowadays, you will see large groups of people practicing the slow, graceful moves at sunrise and again before sunset in public parks from San Francisco to London to Beijing. It is a gentle form of exercise anyone can do. Here in the High Desert, instructor Chris Urmston has been teaching tai chi for over ten years at various venues, after studying for many years with masters Ben Toro and Bill Fleming. He tells me it is a wonderful method for improving patience, focus, and serenity. His students say they have found it to be an important way to combat stress, and improve their general sense of wellbeing. It is possible to keep your body more fit and flexible through these graceful movements which are combined with breathing techniques. It does not tire you out like other exercise regimes--in fact, most people experience just the opposite; they feel refreshed and alert. Chris will help you, in his words, “walk in balance and harmony.” — Elisa Urmston with Bill Light

HD HEALTH MATTERS
Toxins 101: Are we really that
Toxic?
22 High Desert Living magazine
Recently, the Environmental Working Group, in partnership with Rachel’s Network, commissioned five laboratories in the U.S., Canada, and Europe to analyze umbilical cord blood collected from 10 minority infants born in 2007 and 2008. Collectively, the laboratories identified up to 232 industrial compounds and pollutants in these babies, finding complex mixtures of compounds in each infant. This research demonstrates that industrial chemicals cross the placenta in large numbers to contaminate a baby before the moment of birth. Of the 287 chemicals found in newborn umbilical cord blood, 180 cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause developmental problems. The dangers of exposure to these chemicals in combination has never been studied. We detected 287 chemicals of 413 tested (69 percent) in umbilical cord blood samples from 10 newborn babies, with a range of between 154 and 231 for each child. We found 101 chemicals in all babies tested. The National Human Adipose Tissue survey, or NHATS, conducted by the EPA, analyzed human fat samples in 1982 and 1987 from cadavers obtained throughout the nation. This study found that 100% of the samples contained 4 industrial solvents and 1 dioxin. In more than 90% of the samples, there were nine other chemicals. In the first nationwide tests for chemical fire retardants in the breast milk of American women, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found unexpectedly high levels of these little-known neurotoxic chemicals in every participant tested. In the first ever testing on glyphosate herbicide in the breast milk of American women, Moms Across America and Sustainable Pulse have found ‘high’ levels in 3 out of the 10 samples tested. The shocking results point to glyphosate levels building up in women’s bodies over a period of time, which has until now been refuted by both global regulatory authorities and the biotech industry. Your pathology report will include the results of a hormone receptor assay, a test that tells you whether or not the breast cancer cells have receptors for the hormones estrogen and progesterone.
Hormone receptors are proteins — found in and on breast cells — that pick up hormone signals telling the cells to grow. A cancer is called estrogen-receptor-positive (or ER+) if it has receptors for estrogen. This suggests that the cancer cells, like normal breast cells, may receive signals from estrogen that could promote their growth. The cancer is progesterone-receptor-positive (PR+) if it has progesterone receptors. Again, this means that the cancer cells may receive signals from progesterone that could promote their growth. Roughly two out of every three breast cancers test positive for hormone receptors. The good news? Research has found that eating organicn foods reduces pesticides that are detectable by urine samples. To summarize the above points, we can safely make a few generalizations: • Humans store toxins in fat cells. The next time you eat a piece of animal fat, think about what toxins might be stored in that animal fat and what that is going to do to your health. • Umbilical cord blood has been shown to have toxins in it, thus exposing the child to who knows what. • Breast milk has been shown to have toxic chemicals in it as well. These toxins often mimic the hormones in our blood, which likely increases our risk of some cancers, disrupting our hormonal balance, and having an overall negative effect on our health. • Finally, we see that eating organic foods reduced a family’s toxins in their urine. How does the body gets rid of toxins? The short version is that it is done through our liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymph and skin. In an attempt to simplify the understanding of a complex process, most of the time when we discuss the elimination of toxins, we are really talking about the liver. Our current understanding of the liver detoxification process is that it happens in two phases: first collecting the trash and secondly taking the trash out. There are key nutrients to support this process, such as B vitamins, folic acid, glutathione, antioxidants, vitamin E, vitamin C, selenium, sulphur, amino acids, and more. I am not suggesting going out and purchasing these
SUMMER 2016
nutrients, I am just attempting to show the complex biochemical pathways involved in the detoxification process. Our body’s natural detoxification is something we all take for granted; our body is more complex than we fully understand, and it does some awesome work every day. what is your #1 asset? If you answered your 401k, your home, your boat, or your money, well, you are wrong. Without health, what good are any of those things? So, now that we have established that our health is our #1 asset, what do you base your health on? If you answered how you look and feel, you are, again, wrong. Basing your health on how you look and feel can be misleading. Many times people find out they have cancer when they feel fine, and often the first sign of cardiovascular disease is a heart attack or stoke, and by that time, it can be too late. Do you just put a piece of tape over your car’s check engine light? No, of course not. That is just the wrong solution for the problem. We need to find the right solution to fix the problem as to why the light came on in the first place. Similarly, we need to find the right solution to our health problems. Here is the problem-- we know better how to take care of our cars, of which we will own many in our life time, than we know how to take care of our own vehicle, our body, of which we will only own one. We need to base our health choices on the facts. Do you think eating good clean organic foods can provide the fuel for health and healing with less toxicity? Do you think your emotions play a role in your health (for example, how is your digestion when you are stressed)? Is your structure a part of your health? If you answered yes to all these questions, then great-- now you understand the philosophy behind getting healthy. Chiropractors are educated in health and healing without drugs or surgery by supporting the body’s innate God-given ability to heal, and we want
to help you thrive by addressing your structural health, emotional health, and nutritional health. There are two paths. One path leads to increased health, the other to increased risk of disease. What path are you on? The path you are on boils down to the choices you are making. We can’t keep putting toxins in, on, or around our body and expect no consequences. So what are you going to choose to do differently? When will you start? When will you take action? Many people have good intentions, but few people take the first step and implement steps, stick to the course, and finish strong. How will you achieve your health goals? Who will help you, guide you, and hold you accountable? The journey of health is a lifetime commitment, not a destination. If you don’t take action today where will you be in 10-15 years? Here are few steps to consider today: 1. Limit exposure to toxins by eating organic, growing your own food, and switching to less toxic cleaning products 2. Nourish the body by eating real unprocessed foods 3. Keep a healthy percentage of body fat 4. Support your organs’ proper function with supplements and foods from the cruciferous vegetable family 5. Get checked by a health care professional who focuses on health care, not sick care 6. Make sure you have daily bowel movements to get the trash out It’s important that we focus on the rules of health, not the exception to the rule. Everyone has that distant relative who eats bacon and pizza, drinks alcohol daily, and smokes a pack of cigarettes daily and has lived to be 90+ years old, but they are the exception to the rule. They are the outliers. The majority of people will not be that fortunate.

Silverwood Lake & Lake Gregory: Refreshing Summertime Fun-Time! By Stephanie Morris SUMMERTIME! YEAH, BABY! WOOHOO! The kids are out of school, the sun is flamboyantly grandstanding, and the itch to get out there and play is strong! Summer in the HD is exquisite, no doubt. But, let’s be real; it’s hot, and it’s dry! Unless you have a pool gracing your backyard, you may be craving a little sweet relief from the swelter. And, the kids— such joys to have around, really…until the ever-cyclical ballad: “We’re booorrred” becomes their latest hit single. There’s just not enough Calgon in the world. The thing is, not everyone has the means to whisk their families off for a two week sabbatical in Hawaii. Wait a minute; weren’t we just really excited about summer a couple blinks ago? Well, no worries! Refreshing, yet reasonable, summertime fun-time is more easily attainable than you might think. It’s less than an hour away, in fact! We have two very accessible utopias in our own neck of the woods: Hesperia’s Silverwood Lake and Lake Gregory in Crestline. www.hdlivingmagazine.com

CAMPING AND LODGING Family and group camping sites are plentiful and include a table, barbecue grill, and fire ring. Sites 97-136 provide RV hookups, and bathrooms and showers are conveniently located. Leashed or caged pets are welcome! Online reservations can be made via ReserveAmerica (www.reserveamerica.com, (800) 444-7275. HIKING/BIKING/HORSEBACK RIDING The renowned Pacific Crest Trail (spans 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada) runs right through the park and is available for foot and horse trekking. The park also includes 13 miles of paved trails appropriate for hiking and bicycle use. WATER PLAY Boat rentals are available; however, it’s wise to make reservations well in advance. The marina and launch ramps can be found at the south end of the lake. Commercially designed water floats, wakeboards, water skis, and aquaplanes are permitted on the northern part of the lake only. Swimmers and sunbathers may enjoy the two swim beaches located near the southern end of the lake. For those interested, there are also scuba/snorkeling and windsurfing opportunities. Lifeguards are on site Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. FISHING Because of the high volume of boating traffic that occurs in the summer, the best fishing conditions are really found in the spring or fall. From February to June, trout is abundant, but the lake is also teeming with largemouth bass, catfish, crappy, bluegill, carp, and striped bass, available throughout the year.
Silverwood Lake
Just 11 miles east of Interstate 15, by way Highway138, you’ll happen upon a little piece of paradise. The view upon approaching Silverwood Lake is that of a picturesque oasis, indeed. The shimmering water serves as a looking glass, superbly showcasing the grandeur of the majestic San Bernardino Mountains. Formed by the construction of the 249-foot Cedar Springs Dam in 1971, it was originally created as a regulating reservoir, an undertaking designed to meet the water demands of the Inland Empire and San Bernardino. As the California Aqueduct and precipitation drainage from our local mountain range fills the lake, the dam releases a calculated flow, contributing to the Mojave River. Covering 976 acres, with 13 miles of shoreline, the multifunctional Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area provides numerous opportunities for family fun.

SUMMER 2016
Lake Gregory
Once nicknamed “Summer City Amongst the Pines” and “The Swiss Alps of the West,” the mountain community of Crestline was granted many monikers until it received its official title in 1906. The heart of Crestline, Lake Gregory, was constructed in the mid-1930s, thanks in part to the generous contributions made by Arthur Gregory, a wealthy businessman from Redlands. Ridiculously heavy rains filled the newly formed lake in merely three days! Today Lake Gregory Recreational Park serves as an enchanting escape. With swimming and waterpark activities located on the west side of the lake, the south shore offering optimal fishing opportunities, a fitness trail encircling the lake, and events and celebrations occurring all summer long, Lake Gregory provides a much needed, pine-forested retreat from oppressive summer heat and the urban norm. And, here’s the best part—from Hesperia, via Highway 138, it’s a mere 40-45 minute journey away! WATER PLAY AND BOATING Lake Gregory’s Waterpark rocks, literally. Sitting in the middle of the lake’s swim cove dwells a massive, inflated, floating water-play structure, designed for climbing, sliding, spinning, rockin’ and rollin’. The waterpark also provides swings, jumps, winding water slides, and diving platforms for thrills and spills. If you have tiny tykes, The Zero-depth Water Play Park may be a more suitable option, as it provides a safe play environment, complete with colorful and intriguing water-spray toys. The waterpark opens Memorial Weekend, and if you plan on visiting regularly, you can save a little money by investing in season passes. Lake water tests are done weekly during the summer months, and lifeguards are on duty, so parents can breathe easy and swimmers can bask with confidence. Those seeking to relax and unwind may prefer sunbathing or taking a stroll on the sandy beach. Or, better yet, rent one of their pedal boats, aqua cycles, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, row boats, or electric motor boats, and enjoy a leisurely tour of the lake. If you own your own boat, small human or electric powered boats and float tubes are welcome on the lake.
www.hdlivingmagazine.com
FISHING Lake Gregory is well-stocked with brown and rainbow trout, making it one of the finest fishing holes in the San Bernardino Mountains. If you stop by the boathouse docks, you can take a gander at the fish pens where they raise fingerlings and care for tagged derby fish. Fishing tickets can be purchased at a discounted rate at the Boathouse and Beach Office located on the North Shore, but anglers may also purchase tickets at various Fishing Pay Stations around the lake. A great kick off for summer, The Lake Gregory Classic Trout Derby competition takes place on May 28th. With prizes, live entertainment, drawings, food, and drinks—it’s a blast! EAT DRINK AND BE MERRY Located on the edge of Swim Beach, the Cove Café provides another incentive to visit Lake Gregory. A top notch eatery in a beautiful setting, it’s worth the drive just to dine there. The Cove Café is popular for their delicious gourmet sandwiches, handcrafted sauces, sides, and salads. It’s refreshing fare ideal for warm summer days. Now, if you fancy fine dining in an outdoor resort setting, make sure you visit Lake Gregory Beach Club. Visualize lounging lakeside, a glass of select wine or beer in your hand, a fire crackling nearby. There’s a live band singing your song, a delicious meal on your plate, and the beautiful San Bernardino Forest surrounding you. What a great way to enjoy life. Oh, and don’t worry about membership dues; it’s not an exclusive club. Everyone’s welcome!

K
imberly Jarrard, Broker/Owner of RE/MAX Freedom, was raised on a small Ranch in Hesperia and is a 34 year resident of the High Desert. Kim believes that the hard work and family morals is what makes her who she is today. “I am grateful for so many things, mostly for the hard love that I received as a child as it taught me the work ethic that I know today”. Since deciding to go full time in real estate Kim has been one of the High Desert’s top producers. She believes in old school customer service, serve the client and success will follow. Before Kim took up a career in real estate she was a Master Trainer at a gym. Kim says “It was so rewarding and when I got into real estate I searched to find out how to serve the client best. I needed to find the meaning, the reward. The same fulfillment as when I changed a client’s life in the gym”. It took some time but Kim soon realized that this is the largest purchase or sale of most people’s life. This is a big deal! If the client is going to trust her with this responsibility, the biggest financial responsibility of one’s life, she couldn’t let them down. It was then that she realized her place. Real Estate is not about the money you earn, it’s not about “getting” the listing or how many houses you sell. It’s about the client you serve. Kim wants to be your Realtor for life! She is satisfied with the amazing clients that she has had and the ability to serve them. Kim is always there to serve her agents and clients. Kim sold over 24 million in home sales last year, the highest dollar volume of sales in the High Desert and satisfaction comes when clients call her multiple times to help them upgrade, invest or refer her to their friends. “It brings me such satisfaction to watch the families grow and to be part of so many lives, it is what drives me”. Kim believes in having the right real estate agent means having an agent who is committed to helping you buy or sell your home with the highest level of expertise in your local market. This also entails helping you understand each step of the buying or selling process. This commitment level has helped Kim Jarrard build a remarkable track record of delivering results.

ORGANIC FOOD WITHOUT COMPROMISE
DOWN HOME GRILL
“Because our family eats here too” is a saying that drives the customer service, menu, and ingredients that go into every meal at organic restaurant Down Home Grill. Located in Victorville on Ridgecrest Rd. and Bear Valley Rd., Down Home Grill owner George Sillas has put his heart into a restaurant that puts quality above all else. With a menu of organic beef and eggs, gluten free, and GMO free meals, Down Home Grill is a rare and wonderful thing in the High Desert. George’s devotion to providing the best quality food possible is evident when he discusses the importance of eating better and living better. “I had my kids in mind,” he says, explaining that he wanted food that he felt good about his children eating. “Your kids can come here and get a grass-fed burger. They can have gluten free, GMO free pancakes with real maple syrup, and even organic eggs.” He wanted to create a standard of quality food that was lacking in our desert community, but he still took a risk by leaving his previous job and benefits to open a restaurant dedicated to organic food and local suppliers. Before opening on November 5th, a day where they handed out 1500 free organic burgers, George remembers people suggesting he only offer one organic burger on his menu to cut costs. But this was not good enough for him, and he stuck to his original plan. “I know that people want quality, and I could not do that if we had normal burgers and then organic as an option.” It was all or nothing. That led George to find a farm in San Luis Obispo where he gets all of his grass-fed beef. Within 24 hours of placing an order, the beef is butchered, packed, shipped, and delivered to Down Home Grill. He is emphatic that people need to know where their food is coming from. Other suppliers and therefore other restaurants “have beef that comes from various locations. We have no idea where that food is coming from.” George’s goal is to soon make the entire restaurant organic, but he is well on his way by starting with the details where others might compromise: the ketchup is organic, real sugar packets
36 High Desert Living magazine
are provided instead of artificial sweeteners, real maple syrup is for the pancakes that his kids love, and they even use coconut oil to cook with on the grill. Next on the list is organic chicken. Another option for people is gluten free—not just for one item, but across the menu. He explains how people do not yet understand gluten free or the need for it in his restaurant, but his family’s own experience with gluten free eating has made him aware of the benefits a gluten free diet can have. Far too often, families who eat gluten free have limited options when eating out, but not at Down Home Grill. The hand pressed burgers, the kids menu, the salads, and even the deserts like fried Oreos are all made with idea that there is no compromising. He explains that anyone can say they have quality products, but that means little if they are not even positive where all of their suppliers get their food. “I want to call a burger organic without loopholes. It feels good.” Not only is George’s compelling dedication to his restaurant’s quality organic product good for his customers, but it is also good for a community. He encourages people to “vote with your dollar” and consistently buy food that has a higher standard, that is GMO free, that is organic, that comes from local growers and that is going to be better for your family. By doing this, we as a community will get better quality food and more choices. Down Home Grill is paving the way for this higher standard of quality. “You feel good feeding your family good food.” For George, the accomplishment is of it happening. Having a thriving restaurant where his family and members of the community can eat quality food without cutting corners is a reward bigger than any other. If you are ready for an uncompromising meal, stop by Down Home Grill, breakfast through dinner. — Katie Chavez

SUSAN’S CORNER
Body Shaming Shames Us All BY SUSAN LANDERS
T
HE WORLD HAS ALWAYS BEEN A MEAN PLACE. Some people revel in their ability to find low and mean things to say and do to others. This is the way of the world, some say. Sticks and stones…right? Well, not really. Words and images really can hurt and cause lasting damage; social media only makes the pain spread further and last longer. Body shaming has always existed in one form or another; whether an average woman’s struggle to live up to impossible cultural beauty standards or a certain presidential candidate making fun of a journalist’s disability, body shaming is wrong in all its forms. Shaming others says more about the shamer than the target of the shaming, yet any time we do not call out the one making rude remarks or creating images meant to marginalize or humiliate certain people or body types, we are all implicit in the shaming. Whether done by an individual person or a business, body shaming is wrong, low, and should not be rewarded. If the shaming is weight related, it should be remembered that humans come in all shapes and sizes. Rude and hurtful remarks or visuals are sometimes disguised as ‘concern’ for health, even though studies have proven time and again that constant dieting is harmful and perpetuates obesity rather than cures it. The recent studies of The Biggest Loser contestants show that losing weight quickly means most will gain it back with interest, and the cycle is repeated with an industry making billions because of it. Beauty standards, for men and women, change from century to century and culture to culture, and few people can live up to them. With the proliferation of media, these standards become more deeply engrained in our minds. With Photoshop, a fantasy becomes something impossible to attain, and seeing should not be believing, but we do believe, and worst of all, our children believe causing body dysmorphia, eating disorders, and low self-esteem. From the time we’re children we’re taught that it is what’s on the inside that counts, not to judge a book by its cover, and that beauty is only skin deep, but when beauty is rewarded for its own sake, and it proliferates our TV, movie, and computer screens, it’s hard not to feel that what is on the surface is what matters. Our children are being raised in a visual world with messages bombarding them to value particular body types and beauty ideals that are not attainable by more than a tiny percentage of the population, and rather than seek health and fitness regardless of their body type, they will sometimes go to extremes or give up completely, becoming unwilling to accept and love themselves for who they are and not what the genetic lottery blessed them with. Some businesses and groups are seeking to turn the tide, like Dove’s “Real Bodies” campaigns or groups promoting the “All Bodies are Good Bodies” slogans, but it is an uphill battle to create love and acceptance for all body types and all bodies, but it is a worthwhile effort to end bullying, sow the seeds of kindness, and value one another for what we do and not what we look like.
