THE WINE SELLER
T
HE WINE SELLER IN APPLE VALLEY has become a local hot spot in the HD, and owner Wendy Miller wouldn‘t have it any other way. Intimate, tastefully comfortable, and a favorite among wine lovers, the Wine Seller is a wonderful place to spend some time sipping, talking, and just relaxing. Miller, who took over the Wine Seller almost two years ago, often sits with patrons to talk about what’s going on in their lives, and she genuinely cares about her customers. You’ll find her and the staff friendly and knowledgeable whether you’re purchasing a bottle of wine for home or just sitting to enjoy a craft beer. The bar area is large and the wine list is extensive. They often have local breweries, such as Hangar 24 in Redlands, come in for tap take overs giving HD residents the opportunity to try different craft beers locally. The seating areas are extensive with two sides of the bar offering bench, bar and table seating for any size party, and on weekends they have live music. The Wine Seller also takes reservations for larger parties such as company, Christmas, or special events. Expanded a few years ago to not only offer a full wine store and selection but also a full bar offering craft and specialty beers, the Wine Seller’s inviting tone makes it easy to relax as it sits upstairs in the Apple Bear Center giving customers views of West Apple Valley. Sign up for their Wine or Beer clubs and meet monthly for tastings and special events.

A STORY TO ROCK YOU If you are looking for an exciting book to take to the poolside or the beach during these warm upcoming days, you are in luck! Writer and radio personality Susan Landers has released her latest book, Shame’s Ballad: Second Verse. It is a tale of family secrets, jealousy, and danger set in the steamy South during the eighties, with a rock and roll twist. The story is the sequel to her first novel, Shame’s Ballad, which features characters so lovingly well-crafted, we tend to wonder and care about what became of them long after we have finished the last chapter. Happily for all of us, she reprises them in this new novel, including Alexander Drake, the troubled rock star, who, in this harrowing reprise, must come to question everything about his past and break free of almost everything that has defined his world to this point,
while juggling the responsibilities of fame and loyalty. With this new book, Landers magically reunites us with old friends, and it was worth the wait. Landers writes about the world she knows, having been an on-air radio personality for thirty years, most recently at 96.7 KCAL Rocks. She has been immersed in the world of Rock music, and knows of what she writes, having met and worked with some of the best-known voices of our time, including Julian Lennon, Hall and Oates, and Ambrosia. Her experiences, her affability, and her observant nature have allowed her a glimpse into a glitzy world most of us can only wonder about, and because of that, the story has a sense of authenticity that will transport you to another time and place--a world wrought with tension, intrigue and danger--but also love and hope.
APRIL IS NATIONAL POETRY MONTH, and Barstow Community College observed the occasion by hosting its 30th annual Desert Heritage Writing Contest, as well as featuring readings and workshops by local poets. The contest recognizes the most promising young writers in the region, and is an impressive reminder of the level of local talent that surrounds us here in the High Desert. — Elisa Urmston

HD EDUCATION
EDUCATION 101: Back to School
Organization Tips for a Successful School Year
W
hen the school year begins, students need to quickly get back into the swing of things. Staying organized from day one can ease the transition. While every individual needs to tweak his or her routine to best suit personality quirks and study habits, here are a few tried-and-true organization tricks that will work for most anyone:
GET SCHEDULED While the word “bedtime” may have no meaning on summer vacation, during the school year, it’s vital. A regular sleep schedule can mean better quality sleep and higher alertness at school. Likewise, a morning routine can help students focus and prep for the day. Family members should share their schedules with each other to ensure everyone gets to practice, club meetings and other activities on time. Install a household calendar or bulletin board in a central location to ensure everyone stays in the know.
STOMP OUT CLUTTER Lockers and backpacks need to stay organized. Whether notebooks, binders and textbooks are arranged by sequence of the day, subject or color isn’t important so long as the system works for you. To create more storage space in your locker, add durable, stackable locker shelving. For on-the-go book hauling, look for a backpack such as the Five Star Expandable Backpack that features two expanding compartments providing additional space, along with protected storage for laptops. Its patented zipper allows you to quickly get inside your backpack while it’s hanging in your locker. Ergonomic patent-pending straps distribute weight to comfortably support a heavy load. To cheer up your locker with a boost of color and add a place for quick reminders and mementos, try the Five Star Magnetic Mirror + Push Pin Board. Its slam-resistant magnets will keep it
18 High Desert Living magazine
affixed to the inside door of your locker. There isn’t much time between classes, so a mirror is a welcome locker feature when there isn’t time for the bathroom. Organizational tools such as these can keep your ducks in a row all year long. Also remember to set time aside weekly to clean out your locker and backpack, throwing out candy wrappers and crumpled notes.
PERSONAL ORGANIZATION Students need to be able to keep more belongings than ever with them throughout the day -- traditional school supplies, paperwork, flash drives, calculators and other electronics. A binder that can contain it all will give students a chance to make sure their lives are in order, not just a class at a time. For a secure method of carrying supplies, look for the Trapper Keeper Zipper binder, with pockets and dividers to keep items organized, and the Five Star Zipper Binder + Expansion Pocket, which features storage for textbooks and a tablet, and has an adjustable strap that allows you to carry the binder messenger style or on your back. At home, it’s easy to get distracted from important tasks like studying and homework. Create a dedicated work space away from televisions and other distractions. Make sure the area is comfortable, well-lit and conducive to great work. Story from Statepoint.

THE MANY FACES OF
LAUGHTER
COMEDIAN JOE “JT” TURNER ADAPTS TO ANY AUDIENCE • ELISA URMSTON
22 High Desert Living magazine
SUMMER 2015
V
ictor Borge once observed that laughter is the shortest distance between people. Comedian Joe (JT) Turner is a live wire of fun energy, and he is shortening those distances one performance, one quip, one joke at a time. Catching his act one Thursday night at the Green Tree Inn, I arrived early to a packed house. Before he took the stage, Turner was greeting the audience members individually, with a warmth that made people feel like old friends. I was curious about how exactly, one can just get people to laugh on cue. Turner explained, in terms that I, as a musician, understood: it’s like when a singer learns what songs fit his or her voice. At first, it can be hit or miss. However, once you figure out what your “voice” is, he said, you’re set. I would add what Turner humbly overlooks-- that there must be talent and keen observational powers in place as well, and Turner has that in abundance. Having never attended a comedy night, I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I can be notoriously skeptical. One person’s humor, after all, can be another person’s groan. After hearing his first joke, I was on board. His humor is at once insightful and sharp, gentle and universal, and he managed to keep the crowd laughing by exploring our common humanity. It’s clear he likes people. He bonds with the crowd by getting them involved, and sometimes getting them on stage and involved in playful banter. Everything from the communities we live in to the antics of family members were fair game, and he riffed on these themes, delighting the audience at every turn. His set was polished and seamless, with a high-energy delivery. It was easy to see why he has such a large and loyal following. As I left that night, I thought how fortunate we are to have such wonderful talent here in the HD--Turner has performed all over the country, in storied venues such as the Improv-but he calls this desert home, and we are the ones who are lucky enough get the last laugh. You can follow Joe on facebook.com/ Joejtturner or twitter.com/@jtthecomedian and you can call 760-927-5656 for booking information All photos Fink Photography

HD HEALTH MATTERS
BACK TO THE BASICS A
S MANY OF YOU ALREADY GUESSED, this column is going to be about a few basic health principles. I These principles should be easy to understand and more importantly easy to implement today. It has been said that those who adapt and implement new ideas quickly and efficiently are more successful in work, education, health, etc. So let’s get to the basic principles.
PRINCIPLE #1 GET THE BAD OUT Often people get the wrong idea about health, supplements, exercise, etc. People just want to know “what do I take for ______?”. What they are also saying is that “I do not want to change a thing, even though my lifestyle, eating habits, and exercise habits maybe the source, or contributing to, the problem.” Let’s get real folks, there are no magic medicines, supplements, diets, or workout DVDs. Often people think that they can get away with not changing their eating habits and lifestyle and still achieve their health goals; To make it plain and simple it doesn’t matter how many vitamins you take and how much you exercise, true health will not be achieved if you eat 1-2 meals of junk food every day, junk food being high calorie meals with low nutrients (like value meals, soda, pizza, donuts, cappuccinos). I do not care how many multivitamins, B vitamins you take, it is not going to push your health beyond your 5 day per week ice cream habit; sorry if I offend anyone here. I think the easy thing to do is familiarize yourself with food labels and make sure your food passes the “does this make sense?” test. In other words you want foods that do not have preservatives, hydrogenated oil or trans fats, food colorings, chemicals, MSG, added sugars, and other words you typically can not pronounce. You are looking for food with few ingredients, foods that likely will spoil if not eaten in a week or so. For example, you may be surprised to find the following: sugar in salsa and spaghetti sauces, food coloring in peanut butter/pickles/mac and cheese/vitamins, and much more.
24 High Desert Living magazine
PRINCIPLE #2 GET THE GOOD IN Getting the good in is easier than you may think. I would like to make a simple generalization here and not get into the details as to why. You should be eating 5060% of your daily food intake as raw fruits, vegetables (preferably more vegetables than fruits), nuts, seeds, and oils (like olive oil and coconut oil). Protein should be limited to about 1-2 five-ounce servings of chicken or turkey per day and eggs. Preferably everything should be organic and low glycemic load and low glycemic index. Notice not on this list is tortillas, chips, breads, pasta, red meat, and dairy; not that these can not be healthy, but in general the brands, quality, and types the average American purchases are not healthy brands. All that being said, make it fun. You can do great tasting smoothies and include vegetables like beat leaves, swiss chard, kale, spinach, mixed with fruit, nuts, cinnamon, protein powder, water and ice. Sometimes I personally like to walk through the produce section at the store and find something I have never eaten before and buy it and try it. You might be pleasantly surprised with nature’s vast variety of flavors, colors, and textures.
PRINCIPLE #3 MAKE SURE YOU ARE DIGESTING IT This may sound simple enough, but there is a lot to digestion. If you are experiencing pain in or around your stomach/liver/ colon with symptoms of burning, bloating, belching, constipation, diarrhea, and are not having a minimum of one bowel movement per day you likely have digestive issues that need attention. Another sign is if you use antacids daily for a long period of time. This principle is important in that we need to make sure you are digesting the good food you are eating, allowing the food to nourish your body so you can be the healthy and active person you desire to be.
PRINCIPLE #4 GIVE IT TIME This one is likely the most difficult for most Americans. We are a society of “fast” and immediate. We don’t want something in
5 minutes; we want it now. Well, getting unhealthy likely took years to do and getting healthy will likely take years to achieve, especially with the fine tuning necessary when you include all the food sensitivities, genetics, and other complicating factors. Getting healthy through these principles is achievable but it requires thought and team work (including professionals like personal trainers, nutritionists, etc). Families need to help each other out, share recipes, encourage healthy choices, and be supportive. Unfortunately there is not a cookie cutter recipe available, with no special fruit or vegetable from some ancient Asian civilization. Every person is different and their demands are different, so the diet and lifestyle necessary to achieve optimal health will likely be different. Please keep in mind this is not an attempt to treat. Hopefully this article sparked some interest; and if so please consult with your healthcare practitioner who specializes in dietary and lifestyle modifications for further evaluation and guidance. Keep in mind, if there is ever a time in history to be healthy, now is the time, our healthcare delivery system is going through changes, with costs to the patients increasing (through higher deductibles, copays, monthly premiums and less coverage). If you think being healthy is time consuming and expensive, try being unhealthy and sick. See you next issue when we continue our healthy lifestyle learning.

DR. BRAD AND DR. CLIVE HANNON Everyone likes sugar even when it’s disguised in many of the foods we eat. Avoiding sugar in our diet is a tricky business, but Dr. Brad Hannon, chiropractor and life coach, is on a mission to educate people, especially, his patients on the perils of hidden sugar. Sugar is found in many of the foods we eat even when we least expect it. It is found in such varied foods as Bush’s Baked Beans – 3rd and 4th ingredients, Hunt’s ketchup – 2nd ingredient, Jiff Peanut butter – 2nd ingredient, Grey Poupon mustard, Campbell’s cream of mushroom soup and even in seasonings such as McCormick’s garlic salt. For some time now fat has been seen as the number one factor to consider when dieting. But Dr. Hannon says, “Fat is not the worst problem we have. There are good fats, such as olive oil and coconut oil. Stress may be the number one factor in health, today. Many people are overwhelmed by it. One of the best ways to fight stress, though, is by changing your lifestyle.
one who manipulates the spine to treat various disorders, but that is not the whole story. We work as life coaches, too.” Doctor Hannon’s mission – and he takes it quite seriously - is to provide support and guidance for patients through lifestyle changes. They work to strengthen three aspects of a patient’s health: structure, nutrition, and the emotional aspect of life. Dr. Hannon is president of the San Bernardino County Chiropractic Society. He graduated from Southern California University of Health Sciences Doctor of Chiropractic Program. Dr. Hannon offers classes that help in the fight against disease by encouraging and supporting a healthy lifestyle. Some classes are free; others may cost from $15 up to $70. The classes include nutrition, how to prepare food, and how to sustain healthy eating habits. HANNON CHIROPRACTIC (760) 949-0996 | http://hannonchiropractic.com

DR. NAYYAR Dr. Nayyar is passionate about improving the health care delivery system in the High Desert. Originally, from his native India, he did his residency in neurology in New York. He arrived in the H.D. in 1986, and began his practice while urging his family to enter the medical field and whether consciously or not, he has and is contributing more than most as his sons, daughter, and daughter-in-law take his lead. His son Rahul Nayyar is finishing his work in radiology while his wife Sonia is working in neurology. His son, Samir Nayyar, is an orthopedic resident, and his daughter, Megha Nayyar, is in her final year of medical school at USC. He wants to see the delivery system work more efficiently and that includes more qualified, well-trained physicians. About eight years ago, Dr. Gallegos joined the practice and took over seeing patients so Dr. Nayyar could manage Choice Medical Group; however he still does the neurological testing.
www.hdlivingmagazine.com
A religious man, Dr. Nayyar along with Dr. Vir Nanda, Dr. Rakesh Grover, Dr. Rajeev Yelamanchili, and Dr. Raman Poola were instrumental in bringing to fruition the Krishna Valley Temple on Apple Valley Road. Later, he was able to fulfill a promise he made to his daughter through the development of the Krishna Cultural Center, expected to open in 2016.. Making his daughter’s dream come true was not only something he wanted to do as a father, but a further step in providing the community a place where Indian culture could be celebrated. Doctor Nayyar is a visionary with a dream to improve the health care delivery system in the Victor Valley. Choice Medical Group is doing its part by providing roughly 200 physicians, five urgent care facilities, express referrals, fitness classes and health education classes. Their motto: Doing our part in our community to keep you healthy. Though, Choice Medical Group offers a full array of health solutions, Dr. Nayyar is dedicated to improving the health care delivery system in whatever way possible.

Dr. Manouchehr Lalehzarian
urology
We are excited to introduce Dr. Manouchehr Lalehzarian to our team of physicians. He is committed to providing quality medical treatment, to promote your good health in a professional and caring environment. We spoke with Dr. Lalehzarian, and he had the opportunity to share his professional and personal life with us.
“One of my sons once said, ‘Daddy I can’t walk into a hospital and see people cry because of their illnesses. It’s too sad!’ I then told him ‘yes son it is sad, but you need to see things in another perspective...’ ”
Medical Profiles
Dr. Lalehzarian, what made you decide to become a physician?
When I was 7 years old I was at home watching a movie. In the movie a man was on a boat when his stomach began to hurt. He then yelled out for the captain. He told the captain his stomach was hurting. The captain then called another man over, this man then poured alcohol over the man’s stomach and told him he had appendicitis. He performed surgery on this man and removed his appendix. The man thanked the doctor and showed his appreciation. Manouchehr Lalehzarian, M.D. This was when I decided I wanted to become a doctor and cure people.
Why did you choose urology as your specialty? While I was in college. I decided I would go into urology, because I realized there is always a cure. When a patient visits his cardiologist or pulmonologist they can help but in the end there is no cure for those diagnoses. In urology if a patient has prostate cancer you remove the prostate and he is cured. If the patient has cancer in the kidneys. You remove the kidneys. So you see there is always a cure. When I was younger I told myself I would cure those who are ill and this is how I can do that.
What can someone do to prevent from visiting your office, when surgery is needed? Patients wait too long to visit a doctor for their exams. Especially men, they feel they are too macho, that there is no need to get a prostate exam. Women are much better at getting exams that prevent cancer. They go to their regular pelvic and mammogram exams. I advise patients not to prolong exams and just get them done.
At the beginning only a few would attend. Months later this support group grew. More and more would join. Once we had over 30 join our support group. I was speaking with Senator Joe Bacca he thought I should have a title in this group. So that was when he appointed me the Chairman for Prostate Cancer Awareness and Education in California.
Please tell us about your family. You have three children? I have two sons in UCLA Undergrad. I have a daughter in high school. This is her last year. Once she graduates I will have all three in college.
Do your children want to follow in your steps and become physicians as well? One of my sons once said, “Daddy I can’t walk into a hospital and see people cry because of their illnesses it’s too sad!” I then told him “yes son it is sad, but you need to see things in another perspective. One day I had a patient’s family member approach me and thanked me for helping her father. I gave her father another 10 years to live. When I heard that I really felt like I changed someone’s life for good and the feeling of helping others was great!” after I told my son this story. He decided to go into the medical field.
When you’re not with your patients what do you enjoy doing? What are your hobbies? I don’t have much free time, but when I do I enjoy gardening. I feel it relieves stress and anxiety. As far as hobbies I love playing Backgammon.
Can you tell us about your official appointment? Years ago I wanted to start a support group for those with prostate cancer.

interventional cardiology
Dr. Mohammad Aslam, MD, is a Cardiovascular Disease (Cardiology) Specialist in Victorville, California. He attended and graduated with honors from university in 1972, and has 43 years of experience. He is affiliated with The Heart Center at Desert Valley Hospital.
Dr. Aslam, why did you choose your specialty? During my rotations as a medical student, I became very interested in cardiac procedures, especially angiograms. Now and everyday I love the challenge that comes with the field of Interventional Cardiology.
What is your most important piece of health advice for seniors? Be familiar with all of your medications. Their purpose, your prescribed dosage and frequency, side effects and potential interactions with other medications you may be taking. Also, limit the intake of salt and sugar. These can become as dangerous as any drug if left unmanaged or abused. Closely managing these behaviors could potentially effect both your outcome and longevity.
Mohammad Aslam, M.D.
“Obesity is the mother of all American Health Problems.”
America's Heart Disease Burden from: www.cdc.gov/heartdisease/facts
Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing over 370,000 people annually.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.
Every year about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack. Of these, 525,000 are a first heart attack and 210,000 happen in people who have already had a heart attack. About 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year–that’s 1 in every 4 deaths.
If you live in the High Desert and you suffer a heart attack, there is a highly skilled Interventional Cardiologist you can count on to be ready and prepared for your cardiac event. Local High Desert residents are extremely fortunate to have a physician of this caliber so close to home. “We have made a significant investment in order to bring our patients a Heart Center that is unparalleled in the region. We are very fortunate to count Dr. Aslam as one of our leading heart surgeons to the most advanced and comprehensive cardiac program in the High Desert,” states Desert Valley Hospital CEO, Fred Hunter. Dr. Aslam is married with 3 grown children; a Dentist, an Internist and a Pharmacist. Dr. Aslam is well traveled and has seen over half of the world. When he is not with his patients he enjoys reading, golf and hiking.
Our goal is to provide patients with exceptional care for heart and vascular disorders, from prevention and diagnosis to treatment and rehabilitation. We provide a unique experience for both patient and family by bringing together the finest in medical expertise and research in the context of a tradition of compassionate care for every individual.
“We deliver a treatment plan designed specifically for each individual patient.”

World Gym…
literally!!! 32 High Desert Living magazine
W
orld Gym is one of the coolest gyms you’re ever going to experience. Run by High Desert natives Jacob Lewis & Mark Lyons, it’s easy to see that his style is a hands on approach. Careful planning and plenty of creativity has brought to fruition his concoction of industrial/techno design and ergonomic comfort for the athlete in all of us from youngsters to seniors. Just entering the building is an experience. You feel the energy immediately. The atmosphere is louder, the equipment is different, and well… fun. The World Gym logo, a monster gorilla, lurks on the wall just slightly to the right of the entrance. It’s a huge ape for a huge gym. It’s one of the first things – besides the front desk – you see when you enter the gym. Makes you want to flex your muscles like Jay Cutler, four time Mr. Olympia, and Jeremy Beudia, 2014 Mr. Olympic Physique. Both have trained at World Gym. The lighting is more like something you would find in a club, and a back wall can change colors when a live DJ pumps out tunes from an overhead stage. Feel like a rock star while doing some serious workouts.
SUMMER 2015
This is not just a gym; it’s a full service fitness center. Knowledgeable personal trainers will guide you to your most fit self. Workouts can be arranged for any and every schedule. Kid’s World provides activities for your child while you get the worry free workout you want. The child care staff has undergone first aid, CPR, and AED (automatic external defibrillator) training, plus background checks. Children six months to twelve years are welcome at Kid’s World. Children 12 and older, with parental permission, can get their own membership. Numerous classes that include Status cross fit and aerobics, are offered on a regular basis. Check with a trainer to find out what classes are available. Tanning, sauna and steam rooms offer a way to relax. Free weight training is available, and cardio workouts can be adapted to your needs. Silver Sneakers and Silver-n-Fit are programs for seniors. World is, also, a weight loss center for those who want to lose weight and trim body fat. In the front of the store you’ll be pleased to find a full selection of supplement and full-nutrition products. You can find workout gear, as well. Display cases in front of the center house names like Isopure, Muscle Milk, Crossport, Lean Body, Oh Yeah, and the ubiquitous Smart Water. Lewis has good reason to be proud of World Gym. It has been awarded the title of Best of U.S. Design Styles, and voted the Best of Desert for 2014-15 gym and fitness. There are two World Gyms in the HD and plans for a third. The larger gym is located next to Costco in Victorville, and a smaller one is located on Bear Valley Road near Apatite Street. World Gym evolved from the original Joe Gold’s Gym. It then grew to world-wide prominence with gyms in Canada, Mexico, Central and South America. Other countries include Australia, Taiwan, South Korea, India, Egypt, and Russia. There are over 200 locations worldwide and Lewis foresees upwards of 350 in the next five to eight years. World Gym is a twenty-four hour gym open seven days a week. However, Kid’s World child care is open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday. Child care is restricted to 2 hours a day. Kid’s World is closed all day Sunday. Kid’s World membership is $19.99 a month. Adult membership is $19.99 per month. No contracts required. — By Tere Kidd

LOCAL DINING SPOTLIGHT
Louisiana Cajun Seafood House
L
ouisiana Cajun Seafood House (LCSH) is the High Desert’s best choice for Cajun style seafood. Located on Main and Maple in Hesperia’s Starter Bros shopping center, it has gained a loyal customer following. With their friendly atmosphere—including eight big screen televisions for the big game—and their quality seafood procured from around the world, they invite their customers to “dig in and have fun.” Get there early for happy hour Monday through Friday, and when you buy any drink, you can get one for a penny. They have also updated the classic jukebox with the new digital format, Rockbot. By downloading the free app, you can pick from over 3 million free songs to play while you eat. Not only is LCSH noted for their quality food, but they are also making an impact on the community by sponsoring scholarships for local students and holding fundraisers for the Family Assistance Program. It is truly a unique dining experience in the High Desert, so we asked Bill Webb and Gina Shepherd from Louisiana Cajun Seafood House and Sandra Ganis from Ganis Consulting to help introduce this seafood restaurant to the desert community. Here’s what they had to say:
36 High Desert Living magazine
SUMMER 2015
How did LCSH get started? LCSH saw the need for a seafood house in the High Desert. Our seafood is delivered from all around the world, and the owner created a secret special Cajun sauce. LCSH is a unique and different kind of seafood house. This is a place where people come to ‘dig in and have fun.’
What is a favorite dish among customers and staff? Alaskan King Crab is a customer favorite because they are pre-split and the crab is thick and juicy. It is also very reasonably priced. We see the staff eat a variety of everything. They try different things from our menu with the different Cajun sauce.
How is LCSH involved in the community? We first joined the Hesperia Chamber of Commerce and became a leadership sponsor. Supporting our local Chamber helps to support business in our community. We then became premier sponsors for the Family Assistance Program, formerly known as the High Desert Domestic Violence Shelter. We financially sponsor monthly fundraisers and held some in 2015—they were very successful. We also helped to add a play room to the shelter. We also sponsored a student for a scholarship from the Don Ferresse Foundation. We plan to sponsor the veterans dinner the Don Ferresse Foundation has every year as well as the Santa’s sleigh toy drive. We have sponsored families from Rose of Sharon, as well. At the 2015 San Bernardino County Fair, we sponsored the Kellie Pickler concert. Giving back is important and we encourage others to do the same. Find a cause and support it. It’s a great feeling to give back and to see how we can change lives for the better.
What makes LCSH special? Other than striving for 100% customer satisfaction, we have the coldest beer in town. With our Bottoms Up beer it’s always served cold and stays cold. Our happy hour special is Monday-Friday from 3-5 p.m. Buy one drink and get the second one for a penny.
If readers only knew one thing about LCSH, what should it be? We want our customers to feel welcome and to receive the best service ever. Our customers are important to us. They deserve a great place with great food and great service. It’s all about our customers. — By Katie Chavez

A
NYONE WHO KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT ME is aware that I am passionate about animals, writing, and…of course… wine. Well, it just so happened, recently, that whilst perusing the wine section of a local grocery store, all three of my passions merged. I was strolling along, browsing for something new—was stopped in my tracks by a bottle of wine with what looked like a picture of my own dappled German Shepherd mix on the label, staring me in the face, smiling wide. It was a red blend, and…I just had to have it. Investigating further, I saw several other adorable wet-nosed mugs on other varietals beaming back at me. As I studied the bottles of Chateau La Paws more closely, I read, “We Proudly Support No Kill Shelters.” If I wasn’t completely sold before, I was now. I turned to my husband and said, “I’m really hoping this wine is decent because I need to write about this.” As soon as we got home, the bottle was opened, and I took a sip…and smiled. Yes. Chateau La Paws definitely deserves the spotlight. With sixteen years of winemaking experience under his belt, winemaker Marty Spate united his enthusiasm for wine making with his great affection for dogs, creating a beautiful marriage. He chose to partner with North Shore Animal League America, a great leader in the no-kill movement and one of the most successful rescue/ adoption organizations in the world. Chateau La Paws and Diageo Chateau & Estates have committed to donating $100,000, this year alone, to fund the invaluable work the NSALA does to rescue, foster, and find homes for their lovable boarders. Whether you prefer a refreshingly rich and fruity Chardonnay, a big and bold Pinot Noir, or their “medium-bodied mix-breed” Red Wine Blend, your support of Chateau La Paws will not only please your wine loving palate, but you’ll also be supporting a wonderful cause. And, as you ogle over the cuteness that graces their adorable wine labels, know that those faces are actual NSALA shelter dogs that have been saved. I am proud to endorse such a worthy cause, and I hope you will enjoy doing so as well. SUSAN’S CORNER
No-Kill Shelters: Time to “Save Them All” by Susan Landers
B
As many as 9,000 animals are killed in America’s shelters daily.
EST FRIENDS ANIMAL SOCIETY and North Shore Animal League America are part of the growing trend of animal welfare organizations that believe it is worth trying to save every animal that comes their way. There are still far too many high kill shelters operating, including many in Southern California, but with a growing awareness of the emotional intelligence of dogs and cats, as well as other four-legged sentient beings, and the moral obligation many animal lovers feel about those with whom we share the planet, no kill shelters are on the rise. If you have read this issue’s Wine Trends by Stephanie Morris, you will already know about the winery that lends their support to North Shore Animal League America. Though headquartered on the East Coast, NSALA reaches across the U.S. to assist shelters in other regions of the country. Through education, advocation, and innovation, they are spreading the No Kill message far and wide. For information about NSALA, see their website at http://www.animalleague.org/ Best Friends Animal Society’s Sanctuary in Utah is leading the way in creating awareness of just how possible it may be to accomplish their mission to Save Them All.® By sharing resources and supporting shelters across the country and participating in nationwide rescue efforts, like taking in and rehabilitating the Michael Vick dogs, Best Friends has shown just how effective people can be when resolved to do better by their fellow creatures. Seeing the victims of Vick’s torture as redeemable and worthy of a second chance at life, the newly dubbed Vicktory dogs became examples of the ability for dogs to survive trauma and move on with the right care and love. Want to learn more about Best Friends? See their website at http://bestfriends.org/ home.aspx According to Best Friends Animal Society, as many as 9000 animals are killed in America’s shelters daily. DAILY. Anyone who has ever loved a dog or cat will tell you just how individual they are in personality, so just imagine 9000 individual animals dead every day. Let’s help Best Friends and other no kill organizations do something to reduce that number drastically. Through legislation, at local, state, and federal level, there must be more enforcement of animal cruelty laws, including those that seek to prevent hoarder situations and backyard breeding that gets out of control. There must be more resolve to educate children and adults to respect, care for, and protect animals and to view them as fellow creatures deserving of life, not as disposable things. We must do more to increase shelter adoptions and decrease the sale of animals for profit. Through Best Friends Los Angeles’ no kill initiative NKLA®, Los Angeles saw a 50% decrease in shelter deaths in three years. By encouraging pet shops to transition to adoption centers working with local shelters, more healthy pets will go to loving forever homes to live the lives they deserve. Adopt, don’t shop and make a difference for a loving shelter companion animal.
