POOL MAINTENANCE 101 SIMPLE TIPS TO KEEP YOUR POOL CLEAN
F
or many homeowners, there is nothing better than inviting friends over to cool off from the sun’s warm rays in the comfort of their own backyard pool. But as every pool owner knows, keeping their pool clean and maintained for everyone to enjoy can take a bit of work. Here are some ways to keep your investment in its best shape all season long.
KEEP UP WITH SHRUBS If your backyard pool sits near trees and bushes, be sure to keep them trimmed throughout the season. This will help avoid additional debris from flying into your pool, which can create extra cleaning work for you. If possible, consider replacing these plants with those that create less of a mess.
CLEAN THE SURFACE OFTEN Get rid of unattractive stains at the waterline with a quality surface cleaner. For best results, use the cleaner with a pool brush and rub from the top of the waterline to a few inches below the mark.
CHECK LEVELS REGULARLY Be sure to monitor your pool’s chlorine and pH levels at least twice a week. The best time to do this is in the evening and several hours after the last swimmer has left the pool. If a rain or wind storm has occurred, wait about eight hours before testing.
REDUCE MAINTENANCE DUTIES Besides providing increased comfort to swimmers, more homeowners are choosing saltwater chlorinated pools for ease of use and reduced maintenance. If you’re looking to spend less time keeping your pool maintained, consider installing a saltwater chlorination system, which eliminates the need for buying, storing and handling chemical chlorine. Saltwater chlorinated pool owners also enjoy the benefits of less irritated skin and eyes, as well as a significant cost savings verses their chemical chlorine counterparts. To learn more about saltwater chlorinated pools, visit www.swimincomfort.com.
RUN FILTRATION SYSTEM DAILY Water in constant movement is less likely to collect debris, such as dust, body oils and bacteria. Be sure to run your filtration system as much as possible throughout the summer to keep water as clean and clear as possible.
KEEP EQUIPMENT TIDY Pool skimmers are used to pick up yard debris, insects and other undesirable items that can fall into the water. While skimming the pool is typically needed before every swim, you should also clean the skimmers on a weekly basis, or as needed. A clean, maintained pool will help you get most from those carefree days of summer.

L
ocation, location, location is a common phrase among property experts. The perfect location can make a house a home. When Gary and Helene were searching for a new home, they knew that the Oak Hills property they ultimately purchased was the only one for them. Gary recalls telling Helene, “If I can’t have this house, I don’t want to live here.” They explain that it is the location of the property, and the way the house sits on the two and a half acre lot, that makes it perfect for the outdoor life they desire. With seven children and seven grandchildren, Gary and Helene wanted to create an outdoor setting that could be enjoyed by family and friends of all ages. Their home is beautiful, decorated by Helene and filled with Gary’s woodwork, but it is their yard, their outdoor space, that is inspired. This is the story of how the homeowners created a grand backyard oasis by hand: The trees, the lawn, the antioxidant garden, the orchard and the yard art. No landscape designers, no gardeners or pool keepers, just Gary and Helene.
AN IDEA OR TWO Upon first look, this yard is expansive and full of life, but looking beyond the glistening pool reveals details of hard work and what Gary calls, “an over active imagination.” Atop a hill is a rather large gazebo. A staircase leads from the lawn up to the gazebo in a sweeping fashion. From here, the entire yard can be absorbed. So picturesque is this area that family weddings have been enjoyed here. Across the lawn there is small gathering area complete with a fire pit. But it is not the fire pit that is most intriguing; it is the rock wall fountain that is truly magnificent. Gary had an idea, and he built the wall so that water would gently spill over the top and filter down the uneven edges of the stone. Not far beyond that are large Roman style columns with wisteria growing around them. Gary and Helene saved these columns from being thrown out. In fact, much of what is found in their yard has been salvaged from being discarded.
miniature scale is a clue to its function. Each grandchild has a key to the playhouse where hours of fun are had and height measurements are meticulously recorded. Just beyond the playhouse is an expanse of grass. Its free form and gently rolling hills function for fun. Admittedly, a lot goes into maintaining the lawn, but Gary explains: “when all of the grandchildren showed up, took off their shoes, went running through the grass and had so much fun, it was priceless.” The lawn is fun for the big kids as well. It also operates as a fairway where golf can be enjoyed. At the end of the lawn, surrounded by extensive flagstone, a custom pool sits. They were not sure that a pool was something they wanted, but it turned out to be a therapeutic area for them to relax after yard work. AN APPLE A DAY The idea of having fresh fruit just outside your backdoor is a nice thought, but it is not often a reality. In this yard, a mini orchard makes this property not only beautiful, but functional as well. There are apricots, cherries, peaches, pears and apples, and in the “antioxidant garden” blackberries and boysenberries reign supreme. “Take a bite and see if that’s one of the best apples you ever ate,” Gary says as he chooses one from the tree. He reassures me that their yard is pesticide free. And yes, the apple was delicious. Noting that it is something kids don’t readily do anymore, Helene values the fact that their grandchildren have the experience of picking their own fruit and later enjoying the jam that is made from it. BOULDER REASSIGNMENT AND 300 TREES Nothing is taken from the land, only moved. With the help of a tractor, they have shaped the land to accommodate the many ideas that surface. Once the pool was built, the leftover earth was reassigned to another part of the yard to help create a patio. Boulders that once lived in the backyard have been reassigned to the front. They help create a “rockalanche”—not to be confused with an avalanche.
THE PLAYHOUSE, THE POOL AND THE GREEN For cherished visits, Gary and Helene knew that their grandchildren needed a place to call their own. A playhouse seemed fitting. With a concrete foundation, sturdy walls, finished siding, a well decorated interior, and a private patio, this playhouse looks remarkably like a real house. Only the

This idea of reassignment gives the yard a feeling of constant renewal. They describe themselves as the authors of the canvas. Because of this, they have the liberty to change anything at will—no matter how hard it may be to relocate boulders. Additionally, original trees on the property, including Joshuas and junipers, have had the opportunity to thrive among all of the additions. There are about three hundred trees on the property, including some sequoia redwoods. HEART AND SOUL “If I’m the heart of the yard, then you’re the soul,” Helene tells Gary as they take me past the pool to the side of the yard that is more of a blank canvas. This section of the property — though it is lush with large and thoughtfully maintained junipers — features works in progress. There is a fountain and a pond in the works, footpaths to be laid, yard art to complete and surely boulders to be reassigned, but this area is full of potential. It is the next endeavor. As Gary and Helene describe how they came upon unique materials and their plans for the blank canvas, there is a sense of excitement with the prospect of what can be. In many ways this is probably the same excitement they had with the very first endeavor. It is the joy of creativity and hard work. 14 YOUR HOME Quarterly magazine
All the creativity and hard work started with the brick wall that surrounds the property. Gary wanted to build it himself, and though it seemed like an impossibly daunting task, it was accomplished one brick at a time. That is how they tackle each project. When I asked them how people should begin an outdoor project, they said to just start. Having the courage to try may lead to great things. Gary and Helene, the authors of the canvas, have created and will continue to create an outdoor space that is a labor of love. Their kindness is infectious and their genuine enthusiasm for creating a spectacular environment is inspiring. This yard is proof that projects big and small can be accomplished with an idea (a few boulders to reassign) and the good sense to take everything one brick at a time.

A TOUCH OF THE CREATIVE HARDWOOD FLOOR TRENDS
T
he recovering U.S. housing market has led to increased demand for certain luxury items, including hardwood flooring. Exciting trends are influencing the marketplace and for today’s consumers, there are more hardwood flooring options than ever before. “Savvy consumers want variety and flexibility in their flooring choices,” says Linda Jovanovich of the American Hardwood Information Center. “With American hardwood species running the gamut of color, and because hardwood is a product that can adapt to many different decorating styles and dÈcors, hardwood provides a degree of diversity, as well as long-term value, that cannot be matched by other flooring materials.” From the trend-watchers at independent market research firm, Market Insights Torcivia, and the National Wood Flooring Association, this look at what’s trending now.
A TOUCH OF THE CREATIVE • Using multiple wood species is very popular, typically using one species in the main field of the room, then introducing other contrasting species incorporated as a border or other subtle design element in the room. • Mixed media incorporates hardwood with other flooring options like stone, tile, carpet, or even metal. This approach often helps to define different seating or functional areas within a large, open space. • Installing wood floors in a non-linear format is increasing popular as well. Custom parquet patterns can achieve this look, but even traditional linear floors can accomplish the same goal by installing the linear pattern on a curve. • Consumer preferences are gravitating toward darker species,
like walnut, over the more traditional, medium colored white and red oak. In many cases, however, existing oak floors are being refinished and stained to achieve this look without replacing the floor. • Buyers are moving away from the traditional 2º” strip floor to wider plank flooring, 3” and wider. Random width planks are also popular. This creates a very casual look, while utilizing more of the raw materials during the manufacturing process. • Distressed flooring - hand-scraping the boards to achieve an antiqued look, and at the same time hiding small imperfections that can appear in flooring over time, like small scratches or dents. This distressed effect that can also be achieved in the factory.
STAINS AND FINISHES The National Wood Flooring Association, www.nwfa.org, also reports that flooring manufacturers are introducing new lines geared to satisfy the emerging trends toward gray stains and finishes - ranging from very subtle to very dark - and metallic finishes. Metallic finishes? These wood floors incorporate softly shimmering metallic accents by embedding the metallic materials into the hardwood. The result is a pronounced grain that shimmers softly in contrast to the rest of the wood. It is difficult to predict if this trend will catch on longterm, but it has become increasingly popular, particularly on the West Coast.
GET INSPIRED As the U.S. economy continues to recover, more and more consumers will enhance their living spaces with flooring, cabinetry and other luxury items made from American Hardwoods, the ultimate in value, versatility and style.

MAKE AN ENTRANCE ORGANIZE ENTRYWAYS WITH DECORATIVE STORAGE
A
n entryway is the first impression guests have of your home, yet it can quickly become a chaotic mess. Most entryways serve multiple functions as the receptacle for all things you and your family members shed as they walk through the door, from coats and backpacks to keys and mail. With these simple tips, you can transform this unruly space into an organized and attractive area that welcomes all who enter. Begin by de-cluttering. Clean out any storage areas and items that don’t belong, keeping only the essentials in the entryway. Minimizing the excess and creating a sense of order helps relieve stress so you get out the door faster. Create zones for like items. Make designated spots for shoes, coats, bags, hats, etc. Capture your on-the-go essentials such as sunglasses, keys and wallets in a single space. Allocate space for bulkier frequently-used items such as backpacks and lunchboxes, as well as shoes. Don’t forget pets, with an area to collect treats, leashes, toys and other care items. Remember to allow room for outerwear and seasonal items such as coats, boots, scarves and umbrellas, which you can rotate as the weather requires. (When not in use, store items away in airtight containers in the basement, garage or attic.) If defining space for all of these items seems unmanageable, consider a storage solution that helps organize your possessions while adding a touch of color and flair. For example, ClosetMaid’s Decorative Storage products are easy to assemble and come in a variety of configurations (three, six or nine cubes). Pair the units with an array of colored fabric bins to create a custom solution that perfectly matches your decor.
Introduce a reminder area. Consolidating items requiring action will help you keep on top of household deadlines and activities. Use a mail organizer to sort bills and file away items to read later. Add a dry-erase board with a calendar to make notations about daily and weekly events to keep the whole family on the same page. It’s also a great place to personalize with family photos and children’s art projects. Lorie Marrero, professional organizer and author of The Clutter Diet, also recommends creating an errand shelf. “You can put things to be returned to other places or people. Library books, store return items, and borrowed things can go here and wait to be collected when you leave,” Marrero suggests. With a little elbow grease, you can quickly de-clutter and organize your entryway, creating a smooth path for every member of the family in and out of your home.
