Munawar Shariff explores the bond the horse shares with the rich heritage, culture and development of the UAE
The Arabian horse is very tightly bound to the culture, heritage and history of the entire Arab world. They have played an integral role in the history of the region from its development and trade to security and war. Sharing the Bedouin way of life with the camel, the horse was a more prized possession with the highest ranking noble families owning most of the finest breeds. According to an article published in The National, archeological ruins in Maliha - a village near Al Dhaid, close to Sharjah in the UAE - have revealed, in excavations over the years, the remains of a pre-Islamic settlement in which a large tomb was found to have the remains of horses buried with their owners. A horse’s bridle decorated with metal rings and gold plates was found to date back to around 300BC. This is just one of the many traditions illustrating the ancient bond of the loyal animal with the nation and region. 13
Since His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, opened the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse in Dubai in the 1980s, horse breeding, racing and appreciation was back in the forefront paving the way for the equestrian heritage to continue

The establishment of the Godolphin in 1992, (the Maktoum family’s private horse racing stable) and the subsequent founding of the richest race in the world - The Dubai World Cup - in 1996, the horse was again a permanent part of the image and progress of the nation. Since its inception in 1996, the Dubai World Cup has escalated on all fronts - be it the logistical procedures relating to the visiting horses, to other aspects. The most notable being the Meydan Grandstand and Racecourse. This architectural masterpiece is a complete city by itself so to speak. It has the majestic Meydan racecourse, a business destination, lifestyle choices and a uber luxurious 285-room hotel with 95 per cent of the rooms facing the racecourse. Lifestyle choices include an IMAX theatre, a museum, gallery, marina and many restaurants. The Grandstand has a capacity for over 60,000 with a Rooftop Sky Bubble area which can seat upto 4,500 guests. Returning to the horses, Meydan has world class receiving barns, horse stables, an all-weather surface practice track with lounges for jockey’s and horsemen. Being a vision and creation of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, it had to be top notch. HH Sheikh Mohammed is himself a celebrated endurance horse rider having won the recent individual and team gold medals at the 2012 FEI World Endurance Championship held at Euston Park in Suffolk, United Kingdom in August in which 152 riders from 38 countries participated. “Great achievements and victory can only be attained through hard work, persistence, and a sound race strategy. Our two14
year experience in competitions helped us claim the world title,” HH Sheikh Mohammed said in an interview with Arabic daily Al Khaleej.
The Arabian Horse It is a globally acknowledged fact among horse lovers that the Arabian horse is the most beautiful breed among all horses. With characteristics that include agility, intelligence, loyalty, strength and endurance, this breed was and is till date owned by only the most discerning of owners. From pre-Islamic times, the Arabian breed has been highly sought-after. The purity of lineage has been the greatest asset to be preserved in the Arabian horse. Some owners of Arabians allege to have the real pure breed with lineages going back hundreds of years. The pure breed of the Arabian known as the Asil (pure blood) is an endangered breed with only about a 100 of the 7002 registered Arabian horses in the UAE being Asils. All belong to senior royals. The Asil (meaning purebred in Arabic) is a highly prized possession because of a number of characteristics, foremost being the horse’s strength of character and performance capacity given the harsh desert environment where the horse’s owner has only his animal for support and transport. The bedouin manner of breeding is being increasingly lost in modern times leading to a crisis of endangerment of this fine breed of horse. According to the Germany-based Al Asil Club (of which the late His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s stables are members as well as a number of other royal stables), there are approximately 500,000 Asil arabian horses in the world today but in reality out of these Asils are only about two per cent. The Arabian can withstand great hardship in the desert environment being able to go upto three days without water and on very little sustenance. It is due to this characteristic of the Arabian that they are used more in endurance races than thoroughbreds (which are faster but cannot endure long periods of races.) From days gone by they are prized possessions with many horses being led into the family tent in the presence of children because of the horse’s gentle nature in the olden days. There are a number of myths dating back hundreds of years about the Arabian horse. According to the article in The National, one story relating to the Arabian horse is about a time in 1812, when Napolean went to Russia. He was severely defeated losing much of his army and horses. Only about 2,000 horses remained out of 180,000. All of the 2,000 were Arabians. 16

2. ISLAMABAD POLO CLUB & EQUINE SPORTS CENTRE Polo - the sport of kings - originated in North West Frontier of Pakistan thousands of years ago. Regular competitions of wild polo and International standard games are regularly organized up north and in big cities. Although there are numerous polo clubs in the country, the one that has attained a level of excellence is the Islamabad Polo Club. It is the only polo club in all of Asia that is located along the banks of a lake.
