You Need to Know about the World’s Most Innovative Sleep-Rejuvenate Technology! Two cells in biophotonic ‘cell to cell’ communication. Just think, in your body there are 70 trillion cells doing the same as these two cells!

It will absolutely improve your quality of life*, night and day, asleep and awake, no kidding...

Discover this Amazing Holistic Health Breakthrough:

How to rejuvenate your whole body like never before...while you sleep! Are you in one of these 6 groups of people who will benefit from this totally unique* sleep rejuvenation system? 1/Persons who are holistic/preventive/anti-aging oriented: It is amazing...the health benefits that occur when the biophotons emitting from your 70 trillion cells are absorbed by the Celliant technology (in your new ‘sleep rejuvenation system’) and re-emitted back into your body, due to the enhanced and up regulated very clear ‘cell to cell’ communication in the coherent light (biophotons) reflected back into your body (read the website!)

4/Persons with Poor Sleep/High Stress: Substantially improves sleep efficiency, less nocturnal wakening, feel more rejuvenated in the morning 5/Persons with Chronic Pain: Reduces pain, improves overall comfort level

2/Persons wanting more energy upon awakening & throughout the day: It is not placebo...the increased biophotonic activity re-emitted back into the body has the effect of you feeling more energized, because you do have more energy!

6/Persons with Certain Specific Health Issues: Arthritis, fibromyalgia, peripheral vascular disease associated with diabetes, diabetic neuropathy, other conditions associated with poor circulation and low energy

3/Athletic/Active Persons: Improves performance, faster recovery, less fatigue. Triathletes love it!

*Biophotonic worldwide patents. Numerous clinical studies.

What’s All The Excitement About?

Following is the brief background why you really ought to embrace this breakthrough technology for the 1/3 of your life you are sleeping and maximize your rejuvenation (You can not afford not to?!) Biological Physics (Biophysics,Quantum Physics) and Biological Photonics (Biophotonics, NanoPhotonics, PhytoBiology, NanoTechnology, Quantum Biology, Quantum Coherence) have grown from their infancy in the 1960’s to an almost $100 billion a year global industry today, in Biophotonics alone. What BioPhysics/Biophotonics have discovered in the last 50 years, is that the 70 trillion cells in your body each emit faint ‘laser like’ light from all 70 trillion cells, this is called biophoton (or biophoton emission), of a very special character, which is very crucially ‘coherent’(also known as quantum coherent light). This is the secret ingredient you need to take away, biophotons are coherent light, and this ‘up regulates’ the ‘cell to cell’ communication in your body in profound holistic ways, catalyzing your biochemical processes! This powerfully enhances ‘cell to cell’ communication (in your entire Living Matrix/ connective tissue system on a whole system basis), biophotons being the catalysts commanding and orchestrating the 100,000 biochemical reactions per second in each of your 70 trillion cells. It is the coherent light of the biophotons emitted from the nucleus of the cell that is at the crux of where the exciting health benefits come from, in this case all happening while you sleep on this amazing sleep rejuvenation system!

Celliant is a world patented technology which is infused into fabrics and textile and latex in the sleep rejuvenation system, absorbing the energy of the biophotons emitted from your body while you sleep, and re-emits the energy back into your body, in effect conserving and recycling your biophotonic coherent light (laser like) and enhancing your ‘cell to cell’ communication in your entire 70 trillion cell whole body ‘Living Matrix’/connective tissue system, by way of the biophotonic ‘up regulation’. Key benefits being; increased homeostasis, increased oxygen in the tissues, increased circulation, increased ATP production, more energy through the day, better and more efficient sleep, less nocturnal awakenings, less aches and pains, less chronic pain and a long list of other health benefits too long to mention here. To put it plainly, pretty much everything about your body works better with more ‘cell to cell’ communication, with more biophotonic coherent light re-emitted and recycled back into your whole body Living Matrix/ connective tissue system.

Your Freedom to Choose, Our Mandate

I

know many women who line up for an annual mammogram. They may grumble at the inconvenience, but they don’t stop to question whether they are actually doing their body more help or harm. Maybe they will after reading this issue. Then there are other women who have questioned mammography over the years. There is something about the thought of exposing one’s breasts to high doses of radiation, itself linked to cancer development, that doesn’t resonate well with some people. Rosalie Bertell was one of these women, and her rationale for speaking out against mammography stemmed from her background as an internationally recognized environmental epidemiologist and cancer researcher. She was very vocal about the risks of radiation, including radiation from mammograms. Not surprisingly, she drew criticism from mainstream colleagues for daring to criticize the institution of accepted methods of cancer detection. Longtime members and friends of Health Action Network might recall Rosalie’s name. More than 20 years ago, HANS hosted her for a seminar in Vancouver that was hugely popular. And

for years, back before Internet ruled the information roost, we included Rosalie’s articles in our information package on mammography, one of the educational products we distributed. I truly could not count the number of packages we used to send out by mail. Women’s health lost a great advocate last June, when Rosalie passed away at the age of 83. Hers was a vital voice that made many women stop and question conventional practices. These days, it is wonderful to find many of her articles and references online on websites such as the Cancer Prevention Coalition at www. preventcancer.com. And I think Rosalie might have been pleased that the latest Canadian Task Force on Preventative Health Care recommendations on mammograms calls for increased caution due to the inherent risks. I hope you enjoy this issue of Health Action, largely inspired by Rosalie. Dr. Sharon Gurm’s article on mammography and breast health (page 6) is thorough, well-researched and a fitting tribute to show how times have indeed changed. Women have more options to embrace, as Christine Barham found out for herself with her first thermography session (page 7). British Columbians are fortunate to

Breast Cancer Screening: What Are My Options? by Sharon Gurm, ND

B

ased on a systematic review of the latest evidence on breast cancer screening, the Canadian Task Force on Preventative Health Care has determined that the harms associated with routine mammography far outweigh the benefits. Evidence in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (November 22, 2011) does not support mammography screening and indicates that screening is not only ineffective but it is also harmful because of the false-positive tests, overdiagnosis and overtreatment. The authors stated, “There was no evidence that screening with mammography reduces the risk of all-cause mortality.” Overtreatment includes aggressive mastectomy and other life-shortening interventions. In a review of statistical data among countries with organized breast cancer screening programs, it was found that the risk of breast cancer actually increases by one-third as a consequence of a 50 percent rate of overdiagnosis.

What are the new guidelines for 2012? The Canadian Task Force on Preventative Health Care issued updated guidelines for breast cancer screening. Key recommendations include: • No routine mammography for women ages 40 to 49 because the risk of cancer is low in this group while

the risk of false-positive results and overdiagnosis and overtreatment is higher Routine screening with mammography every two to three years for

women ages 50 to 69 Routine screening with mammography every two to three years for women ages 70 to 74 • No screening of average-risk women using MRI • No routine clinical breast exams or breast self-exam to screen for breast cancer These recommendations are consistent with those of the Canadian Cancer Society, which suggests women 50 to 69 should have a mammogram every two years. They are also congruent with national guidelines in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. •

Case for personalized screening recommendations The recent evidence on the harms of routine mammography has initiated considerable debate among medical experts as to what is the best approach for breast cancer screening―especially for women in their 40s. It demands

a closer look at how primary care physicians are making screening decisions for patients. Rather than follow a basic protocol for screening based on age, it may be more appropriate to make informed decisions based on individual risk and patient preference to develop a personalized approach to mammography screening. Women with the following factors have a greater risk of developing breast cancer: first-degree relative with breast cancer history, BRCA-gene mutations, past or current smoker, obesity, nulliparity (not bearing offspring) and past or current use of hormone therapy. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis identified which risk factors for breast cancer are specific to women in their 40s and to what extent that, in turn, could assist in making individualized informed screening decisions (Annals of Internal Medicine, May 2012). The researchers concluded that extremely dense breasts and first-degree relatives with breast cancer (that is, mom or sister) each doubled the risk for breast cancer in women ages 40 to 49 years. Prior breast biopsy, second-degree relatives with breast cancer, or heterogeneously dense breasts (dissimilar density in one breast relative to the other) were each associated with a 1.5- to 2.0-fold increased risk. Current use of oral contraceptives, nulliparity, and age 30 years or older at first birth were associated with a 1.0- to 1.5-fold increased risk. continued page 8

My First Thermography Exam by Christine Barham

I

am not one to worry about potential health concerns, but I do believe in prevention. Nine years ago, my grandmother―Nana―was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was by her side for every doctor’s appointment and radiation “treatment” appointment. Nana disliked most the numerous mammograms she endured―the intense pain and discomfort associated with having your breasts “squished like a pancake” and subsequently exposed to radiation. During this journey with Nana, I decided there must be a better way. I did not look forward to those “routine” mammograms that the medical community recommended for every woman starting in her 40s. So when my naturopath suggested that I get a thermography scan as part of my breast health plan, I jumped at the chance. Being in my early 30s, I am at a great age to establish my initial thermography baseline.

What is thermography? Thermography is a screening tool that identifies physiological changes in breasts that may be abnormal. The thermographical images are produced using a special infrared camera that measures the amount of heat emitted on the surface of the body. While a thermography scan is not a replacement for having a mammogram, it effectively tracks vascular and breast tissue changes over the years without the potentially harmful cumulative effects of radiation. Kind of like a first line of defence before moving on to more invasive tactics such as a mammogram. All things considered, I was looking forward to my first thermography experience. What to expect I booked an appointment with Port Moody Naturopathic Health and Wellness and was given pre-exam instructions designed to help keep the breasts at a true continued page 9

Although the study did not consider the effects of multiple risk factors (further research to study the combined effects of these factors on overall risk is warranted), identification of these individual risk factors may be useful for personalized mammography screening. Making screening decisions based on a woman’s individual cancer risk has the potential to save more lives than current conventional practice. Risk-based screening can refocus efforts onto the women who are most likely to benefit from screening, while minimizing associated harms in those who are not as likely to benefit from mammography screening. It is also important to respect the preferences of individual women. Joint decision-making with the patient will ultimately help lead to better outcomes. Non-invasive methods of assessing breast health Breast thermography is a nonradiation, FDA-approved screening tool that utilizes infrared sensors to detect changes in breast tissue based on alterations of heat patterns. Thermal emissions (or heat) reflect the metabolic activity of the corresponding tissue. Cancerous and pre-cancerous cells will emit more heat than normal cells because they are more metabolically active and are recruiting blood supply to grow. Tumours emit more heat than surrounding tissue due to their increased blood supply (angiogenesis). Whereas mammography, CT, MRI and ultrasound are structural tests that rely on physical changes producing a lesion, thermography detects the physiological changes―predominately asymmetrical circulation―within the breast. It can be used in place of, or in conjunction with, structural or anatomical testing like mammography and ultrasound. Breast thermography is a clinically useful tool to detect changes in tissue even before a tumour forms. Radiographic assessment such as mammography can only detect changes once a sizable tumour has formed. Certain types of breast cancer― such as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), the most common type of breast cancer― are often undetectable by mammography, whereas thermography can clinically be very useful in the diagnosis of DCIS.

Dense breast tissue is difficult to evaluate with mammography, and inconclusive mammograms lead to further structural evaluation, in turn exposing the patient to greater harm. Dense breasts can be evaluated with thermography for heterogeneity and other characteristics that can assist in personalized screening recommendations. If thermography reveals a pattern that is questionable, further screening may be a consideration depending on the preferences of individual, their age and their risk factors. How often should I be screened with thermography? Once a baseline thermography has been completed, the usual recommendation for those at low risk is every 12 to 24 months. If thermography reveals tissue change that is consistent with a moderate

“Radiographic assessment such as mammography can only detect changes once a sizable tumour has formed.” risk, you may be advised to have repeat screening at six to eight months and possibly in conjunction with structural testing (that is, mammogram, ultrasound). If high risk, screening may be repeated in three months with the addition of further assessment involving structural testing. What are the benefits of thermography screening? For most women, dismissing the idea of routine screening for breast cancer is frightening―despite the evidence of associated harms. Thermography offers an opportunity for non-invasive screening and provides valuable clinical information to assess breast health and cancer risk. If a thermography scan reveals early abnormal tissue change, the main components of a treatment strategy will generally consist of relatively simple interventions such as diet and lifestyle modifications in the effort to achieve healthy hormone balance and reduce inflammation. Earlier inter8 | Health Action | www.hans.org

vention means less chance that abnormal tissue will become cancerous and greater likelihood that the changes are reversible with appropriate treatment. Before age 40, mammography is not an option for most women, again, due to the associated harms. However, thermography can begin as early as 20 years of age and may be a consideration in young women who are at greater risk. In fact, studies have demonstrated that treatment such as diet and lifestyle changes in your 20s are even more likely to reduce the future risk of developing most chronic diseases, in addition to reducing the risk of breast cancer. We emphasize that screening with thermography is only part of a complete breast health check and breast cancer risk assessment. It is not recommended for initial, stand-alone screening. Where is breast thermography offered? There are a number of certified thermographers in the Lower Mainland of B.C. Be sure they are using advanced technology for digital thermography. Research the qualification and credentials of the thermographer. As with any assessment tool, there can be substantial variation in results that depend on the technician’s skill, routine calibration of the machine, correct patient preparation and room temperature. Patients must be advised to avoid exercise, smoking, alcohol, tight clothing, beauty products, tanning, physical therapy and large meals in the hours before the thermography scan. Thermography is currently not covered by the standard Medical Services Plan of BC. Some extended health insurance plans may cover its cost, so check with your individual provider. Most primary care providers (MDs and NDs) will support their patients’ use of breast thermography. Once results are analyzed, you can request for a detailed report of findings to be sent to you and/or your primary care physician(s).1 H Dr. Sharon Gurm practises at Port Moody Naturopathic Health and Wellness, which offers thermography services provided by the Thermography Clinic, Inc. four times per year. www.portmoodynaturopathic.com (604) 949-0077.

continued from page 7

body temperature. This provides for a more accurate physiological image. The instructions included: • Avoid using all body lotions and beauty products on the breasts and surrounding area on the day of the exam; this includes using deodorants/antiperspirants. • No prolonged sun exposure or use of tanning beds within five days of the exam. • Do not wear a bra or restrictive clothing to the exam. During my appointment, I was seated in the private imaging room kept at a constant, yet not uncomfortable, cool temperature. I removed my clothing from the waist up then sat motionless for 10 minutes to bring my surface body temperature down. Again, this allows for a more accurate r esult. The female thermography technician took the first images consisting of different views of the breast. For the second, or functional, set of images, I first placed my hands in icy water for one minute to invoke a specific vascular response. When the

body senses that it may be stressed due to cold temperatures, normal, healthy blood vessels will constrict, forcing the blood away from the breasts and deeper into the body’s core. But abnormal blood vessels that feed abnormal cells will not constrict. The blood in abnormal vessels will stay in the breasts and will be much more visible to the infrared camera with the lack of blood from the normal v essels.

“I feel relieved and empowered that I can now keep track of this important aspect of my health.” The whole thermography exam took only about 30 minutes―and I can happily say it was completely painless and without radiation! After a few days I returned for a followup with Dr. Sharon Gurm. It was good news! The thermogram did not detect

any abnormal findings, though it did indicate that my hormone levels could be out of balance. Both sets of images were normal, with my left and right breasts showing symmetrical images, which is a key factor in determining the results. I now have a good baseline to compare my future thermography images to. If any changes from this baseline occur, further diagnostic testing could be considered. I feel relieved and empowered that I can now keep track of this important aspect of my health. I only wish that my Nana could have had this same valuable opportunity to play a more active role in her health when she was younger.1 H

Methoxychlor sprayed on fruits and veggies, and cattle to kill insects; Kelthane sprayed on cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, strawberries and apples; Kepone sprayed on bananas, tobacco, ants, roaches; Lindane sprayed on crops and found in head lice treatments; Chlordane sprayed on home lawns and gardens, and also to kill termites. Atrazine sprayed on weeds; Pesticides enter the body through the digestive system, skin and lungs. Cattle for beef production in Canada and the USA are given zeranol or estradiol and testosterone or trenbolone acetate. These hormones are estrogenic and the testosterone can be converted to estrogen.

Eat organic fruits and veggies and avoid spraying weeds. Check your local farmers markets for organics. Vancouver farmers markets can be found at eatlocal.org.

There are high amounts of hormones (estrogen and progesterone) in Canadian dairy products. Phthalates or parabens are another source of xenoestrogens found in shampoos, conditioners, makeup, shaving creams and deodorants. Methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, propyl paraben and butyl paraben are estrogenic and are found in skin and body lotions. Bisphenol-A and phthalates are used to make plastics and line tin cans. Remember to never microwave plastics, which releases xenoestrogens into your food. Nonylphenol and octylphenol, found in household cleaners, laundry detergent and dishwasher detergent, are broken down by the skin’s bacteria and absorbed. Benzyl acetate, benzyl alcohol, ethanol, A-terineol, ethyl acetate, camphor, chloroform, linalool and pentane are broken down by the skin’s bacteria and absorbed. Herbicides are used to keep sea lice under control. Dioxins, used to bleach tampons, pads and toilet paper, and in fragrances and deodorants, are all estrogenic.

Synthetic estrogens like prempro, DES and Premarin, Cimetidine (Tagamet) and BCPs all contain toxic estrogens. These hormones when flushed out of our body are put back into the water system, which in turn are introduced to fish and shellfish, which again in turn we eat. So the cycle continues.

Buy hormone-free beef products. Check in with your local neighbourhood butchers or whole foods grocer to see if they carry hormone-free beef as well as Choices, Capers and Whole Foods. Again you can find organic (hormone-free) milk at specialty stores. Go to www.ewg.org to see which cosmetics contain toxic estrogen compounds. Health food stores stock safe alternatives for makeup, shampoos, skin creams and products. Instead of using plastics, purchase glass and use stainless-steel drinking bottles. Look for cleaning products that do not contain these chemicals. Use a dryer ball.

Avoid farmed fish. An alternative to tampons that is also environmentally friendly is the Diva Cup. I cannot say enough good things about it. 100 percent silicon—no rubber, latex, plastic or BPAs—they are reusable, making them cost effective while saving the environment. Avoid synthetic estrogens. There are several alternative birth control methods. Check out my post on Female Birth Control Methods at www.drnataliegroenewoud.com.

hat are all these xenoestrogens that everyone is talking about? Xeno sounds like some sort of intergalactic reference. Do these estrogens come from Mars? Umm, no. But they are definitely foreign and what we absolutely know is that our bodies are no place for them to land. Xenoestrogens are estrogen mimickers that are similar enough to human estrogens that they fit into the same cell receptor sites. They are very difficult to eliminate from the body, and if they are not eliminated they are stored in fatty tissue, such as the breasts, and contribute to estrogen-dominant conditions such as: • Breast cancer • Uterine cancer • Fibrocystic breast disease • Ovarian cysts • Infertility • Endometriosis • Premature sexual development • Uterine fibroids • Heavy periods Today, the sources of these xenoestrogens have become so dominant in foods and products that we are constantly being bombarded with exposure to them. Xeno detox To the right is a chart of common estrogenic sources and how to avoid them. It is frightening to realize how many of the products we use in our everyday life, but there are alternatives! The best way to get rid of xenoestrogens is to not even

introduce them in the first place. However, in addition to avoidance, it is essential that we eliminate them from our bodies. The best supplement to eliminate xenoestrogens is indol-3-carbinol (I-3-C). I-3-C is derived from the cruciferous family of vegetables (broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage). It activates the liver’s

Save Our Right to Choose Homeopathy by Marie Lamey, DCH

H

omeopathy is once again under attack and needs your support. In its 200-year history, homeopathy has faced much adversity but has continued to thrive thanks to the support from the millions of people that have benefited from using it. Homeopathy is a safe, natural and highly effective system of medicine based on solid principles. It is also the second most popular form of medicine in the world. The American Medical Association (AMA) was formed in reaction to the growing popularity of homeopathy, chiropractic and osteopathy in order to protect the interests of physicians with the help of the pharmacies who supplied them. The attempt to destroy homeopathy by the AMA almost succeeded as it wiped out many schools and hospitals that were its foundation. This time the attack comes from a skeptic group that has launched a classaction lawsuit against Boiron Laboratories and Shoppers Drug Mart. The product in question is the popular homeopathic flu remedy Oscillococcinum. The basis of the lawsuit is that Oscillococcinum is mislabelled because it does not contain measurable amounts of its stated active ingredients. Now, for anyone who knows anything about homeopathy, this is no surprise. One of the premises of homeopathy is that the remedies are prepared in diluted mixtures, sometimes to the point where there is no trace of the original substance left. It is these therapeutically active micro-doses that can effectively treat disease symptoms by stimulating the body’s own natural system of healing. Health Canada has given homeopathic remedies approval under the Canadian

Food and Drugs Act and issued a Natural Product Number (NPN) or Homeopathic Medicine Number (DIN-HM) for this product. This number lets the public know that the product has undergone and passed a review of its formulation, labelling and instructions for use and permits the manufacturer to market the product in Canada. Boiron Laboratories has performed clinical trials on its product, Oscillococcinum, and found it to be effective, as have the many Canadians who can attest to its efficacy. The repercussions of this lawsuit would be that all homeopathic remedies would be affected as they are all labelled the same way, which is on a scale

“Homeopathy is the second most popular form of medicine in the world.” of dilution. Needless to say, this would greatly affect your health freedom and accessibility to homeopathic remedies― which are safe, effective and affordable. The power of homeopathic remedies never ceases to amaze me. I recently travelled to Ontario for my sister’s wedding and had the misfortune of getting food poisoning the night before the wedding. I was in terrible shape and was suffering from persistent nausea throughout the whole wedding ceremony. We decided to find a pharmacy that carried homeopathic remedies and after driving for 20 minutes and three stores later, we found one that had the remedy I needed―Ipecac. By the

time we arrived back at the hotel about five minutes later, the nausea was gone and I was able to enjoy the rest of the evening. If I was unable to find a pharmacy that carried homeopathic remedies that day I would most certainly have suffered as a result. If there were no access to them at all, we all would suffer. As a Canadian and a consumer of natural health products that need to be protected, your support is needed. Two passionate and enterprising homeopaths in Ontario, Karen Wehrstein and Maria Ringo, have formed a grassroots, member-funded organization called the Canadian Consumers Centre for Homeopathy (3CH). Their goal is to preserve freedom of choice in health care for everyone, which includes the freedom to manufacture, sell, buy and use homeopathic remedies. They have put a petition on their website and are looking for 5,000 signatures to silence the skeptics and their quest to deny you access to natural health products and homeopathic remedies. You can find the petition at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/219/574/043/, which currently has more than 1,600 signatures and testimonials. Or visit the 3CH website directly at www.homeocentre.ca. On behalf of the BC Society of Homeopaths, I strongly encourage you to sign the petition and share it with all your friends and family. It only takes a few minutes of your time, but together we can send a message that says, “Hands off our health freedom.”1 H

Prostate Cancer: A Personal Journey by Linda Baker

I

knew the minute my husband walked in the door that the news wasn’t good. Prostate cancer, the specialist had told him, and had given him a website for reference, and that was that! We hugged but shed no tears. I was all, “Let’s get this thing fixed!” For about three years, I’d been seeing a Europeantrained practitioner, and I owed my current health to her guidance as well as to cleansings, supplements, chiropractics, massage, meditation and more. After years of painful symptoms and declining health, I’d already embraced the benefits of complementary healing options. With a family history of cancer, my husband was still skeptical but agreed to see my practitioner, who put him on high doses of antioxidants. He was referred to an esteemed clinician-scientist and urologic surgeon at the Vancouver Prostate Centre. Between our surgeon and holistic practitioner, we were in good hands. My husband took his supplements and decided on the basis of the surgeon’s assessment to have his prostate removed. My husband was young, just 52, and otherwise in good health. He is not very talkative, so it’s challenging to sense when he’s under stress. But this was a nobrainer. Still, I couldn’t figure out why he was so cool to the holistic information I kept sharing. It felt like he just wasn’t engaged in this process. Surgery was scheduled for before Christmas. Meanwhile I was trying everything possible to get him engaged in his own healing. One day I asked if he’d go to yoga with me in hopes that the energy

work might release something. He said yes, he’d try it. But it was clear he wasn’t committed, so we didn’t end up going. I persuaded him, though, to attend a two-day workshop at Inspire Health Integrated Cancer Care in Vancouver about complementary cancer therapies. He didn’t seem convinced by the successes of complementary therapies, but he took it all in and said understanding what others there were dealing with—from breast cancer to brain cancer—helped him gain perspective.

“One morning, we argued. We never argue, so this was a big deal.” One morning, we argued. We never argue, so this was a big deal. I remember how carefully I chose my words. It felt as if my whole life was on the line. I said it seemed like he was just going along with whatever others wanted him to do, and that until he looked this thing in the eye and took control of his own healing, I believed the cancer would keep coming back. He said, you just don’t want me to have the surgery. And I replied, no, I want you to take control. And whatever you decide I will support you 100 percent. The words went back and forth, the energy got bigger, eventually he broke down and cried, the first time since his diagnosis. He said the surgery was too soon, just a few weeks away. He didn’t

want to be an invalid over Christmas, a big family time in our household. He asked me to call and cancel the surgery. The doctor had said this was a slow-growing cancer so a delay wouldn’t make things worse. Besides, the supplements seemed to be slowing or stopping further growth of the cancer cells. We hugged each other tightly that morning. Christmas was relaxing and fun. In the new year, he mentioned maybe it was time to reschedule the surgery. Of course I’d have preferred my husband not be cut open, that the supplements would do their work and while he’d die with prostate cancer, he wouldn’t die of it. But this was not my journey. It was his. The surgery was scheduled for February. And I booked us another trip to his favourite destination, France, for the end of April, this time using all our points to go business class. The look in his eyes when I delivered the news that his surgery was scheduled―and so was France!— was pure relief. His surgery went ahead and he was home in two days. The doctors at the Vancouver Prostate Centre were surprised how well he was healing just a few days later. My husband switched to supplements to promote healing and we monitored his progress over the next six weeks. Our France trip that year was the best ever. He loves planning trips, so pouring over gite options, car rental packages and Michelin-starred restaurants was the perfect pre-surgery diversion. And relaxing in Provence over good wine and even better hilltop views clinched his recovery.

“I was trying everything possible to get him engaged in his own healing. ” 16 | Health Action | www.hans.org

Guys,This One’s for You —Prostate Health by Brenda Gill, ND

T It’s been 10 years since his diagnosis. So far, so good. Naturally, I sometimes worry about him. He knows that he didn’t beat cancer, that it was cut out of him. But overall, he doesn’t seem to worry about it like me, and I’ve realized that my fear isn’t helping anybody. Life is good. We eat healthy, non-processed food. We try to get more exercise. Our two kids are happily married, we have 2.5 grandkids, we’re not rich but generally OK. We laugh a lot, we love hanging out together but enjoy time alone too. And we’re both writing three times each about each traumatic experience in our lives, to help purge ourselves of old negative energy. I’ve long imagined that a team approach to healing and wellness would be most logical, that each discipline, like naturopathy, chiropractics, energy manipulation, western medicine, TCM, ayurveda and more, would contribute to the patient’s healing strategies. My husband’s current doctor, though dismissive of complementary healing, is at least diligent about regular testing. I’m still learning all I can about healing, and I try to share it with my husband. And our natural practitioner’s insights continue to be a crucial part of his journey, and mine. We process all the knowledge as best we can, we work at replacing old habits with new ones, and have faith that the universe is unfolding as it should.1 H Linda Baker is a curious, creative thinker whose journey this lifetime has so far included a successful interior decorating business, managing a chocolate factory, labour relations, event management and fundraising, and, above all, writing, public speaking and teaching, and the spiritual quest to manifest her authenticity and life purpose.

he prostate is the gland that supplies fluid to the semen and can become swollen as men age. This is due to an increased concentration of the hormone dihydroxytestosterone because of reduced breakdown and increased prolactin (protein hormone) levels. This can overproduce prostate cells and cause swelling, which in turn obstructs the neck of the bladder and decreases urination. The typical symptoms that indicate the bladder is being affected are difficulty starting or stopping urination; increased frequency of urination; decreased flow of urination; dribbling after urination and pressure in the bladder area. If you experience any of these symptoms, the prostate may be swollen and you should be getting a prostate exam and possibly have a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test done. Watch beer intake and stress levels Two factors that lead to this imbalance are too much beer and stress, which both influence hormonal balance. Therefore, it is important to keep beer consumption minimal (and possibly drink wine instead) and work on ways to handle stressors more effectively. Indications that stressors are affecting you may include: • Mood swings • Difficulty falling or staying asleep • Irritability/anger • Anxiousness/nervousness • Decreased energy • Irritability/anger • Lack of motivation/drive • Overall decreased sense of well-being/happiness Nutrients for men’s health Zinc. This has been shown to reduce the size of the prostate, since it is paramount in many parts of hormone 17 | Health Action | www.hans.org

breakdown and metabolism. The highest levels of zinc are in raw seeds such as sunflower, sesame, pumpkin, flax and hemp seeds. If you supplement with zinc, it should be combined with copper, since they keep each other in balance. Vitamin B6. This is also extremely important for hormone metabolism and liver detoxification. B6 is found in whole grains, eggs, fish, poultry, dried beans and liver. If buying a supplement, it is essential to use a B6 complex that has all the rest of the B vitamins, since B6 needs the others to absorb well. Remember, always buy capsules or powder. Tablets only absorb about 10 percent. Essential fatty acids (EFAs). These have been shown to significantly improve symptoms, probably due to an underlying deficiency. EFAs are found in fish and raw seeds as well as flax, hemp, evening primrose and soy oils. I often have men take about one tablespoon per day of flax or hemp oil, or you can make a salad dressing with them. Amino acids - glycine/alanine and glutamic acid. These have been shown to relieve symptoms. They are found in whole grains, avocado, poultry, fish, beans, legumes, lamb and buffalo and other red meats. Keeping equivalent protein intake to carbohydrates (being mostly veggies and fruit) usually keeps these levels stable; however, you can buy amino acid powders and liquids. These guidelines should give you a head start on preventing prostate problems, but if you are experiencing symptoms, you should consider an appointment.1 H

Salvestrols—Nature’s Defence against Cancer: Linking Diet & Cancer Book review by Julie Cheng

“Eat your vegetables.” ―Mom (various dates)

W

ith humour and meticulous research, author Brian Schaefer has written a reallife medical detective story about the remarkable discoveries made by respected scientists in England who are on the trail of a cancer cure. Their discoveries could well lead to a targeted cancer therapy that―unlike chemotherapy, which is toxic to all cells―causes cancer cells to die and leaves healthy cells alone. They also likely prove that mom was right. The scientists are Gerry Potter, a professor of medicinal chemistry who has designed cancer-fighting drugs, and Dan Burke, a professor of pharmacology and specialist in enzyme metabolism whose research group at the Aberdeen University has discovered a “rescue” enzyme found only in cancer cells. Professor Potter created a drug that targets this rescue enzyme known as

CYP1B1 (pronounced sip one be one). The drug is activated by CYP1B1 and causes cancer cells to die. Healthy cells are left alone. This promising new drug, called Stilserene, is currently winding its way through clinical trials―a process that could take seven to 14 years before the drug becomes available for use. Meanwhile, Professor Potter turned his attention to finding a natural foodbased compound that had the same action on CYP1B1. Extensively analyzing fruits, vegetables and herbs, researchers found a new class of compounds that behaves like Stilserene. Professor Potter called these compounds salvestrols. What are salvestrols? Salvestrols are part of a plant’s immune system. Different salvestrols exist; some are antioxidants, some are polyphenols, some are phytoestrogens. In plain language, Schaefer shows us how salvestrols work. “CYP1B1 may be an adaptation that enables us to borrow

the plant’s defence mechanism and make it part of our own defences. … We eat the salvestrol rich plant and those same salvestrols enter our cancer cells and induce their death through metabolism by CYP1B1.” More reason to eat organic This breakthrough theory explains the mechanism behind the diet-cancer link. Schaefer writes, “A central message to take from this mechanism is that dietary change can have enormous and long-term consequences for the improvement of your health.” However, salvestrols are depleted in our diet through modern practices like pesticide use and food processing. That’s why, to lower cancer risk, it’s necessary to eat fruits and vegetables that are organic. Salvestrols comes with a list of salvestrol-rich plants, dietary recommendations from Professor Potter’s Green and Red Diet, and sample recipes, as well as a glossary and extensive references. www. salvestrolbook.com H

InspireHealth Victoria Update by Brian Schaefer

I

nspireHealth opened its Victoria clinic last October to serve residents of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. It was a great occasion for many on the Islands who had previously been travelling to Vancouver to participate in InspireHealth integrative cancer care programs. When the clinic first opened, it was a quiet place to visit while it established itself in the community. But it’s no longer as quiet as it once was. There are now around 100 people registered with InspireHealth Victoria. The clinic is focused on teaching people how to reconnect with good health and the body’s innate ability to heal, and how to change focus from a “fear of dying to a joy of living.” Since opening, InspireHealth Victoria has increased the resources they offer to those with a cancer diagnosis, their caregivers and those who have recovered from cancer and want to prevent its recurrence. In April 2012, clinic staff ran their first two-day program called the Life Program. This program teaches everything one needs to know about their cancer journey and the years that follow,

including how to make informed decisions about treatment, how to improve health through evidence-based advice on nutrition and exercise, how to deal with stress by using meditation, mindfulness and visualization and, finally, how to take charge of your mind. Program participants also learn about recent research findings on self-care and new research going on at InspireHealth. Most importantly, they learn to assemble all of this information into a plan for reconnecting with their innate ability to heal. A team of medical doctors, a nutritionist, exercise therapist, psychologist, acupuncturist and a naturopath, along with other support people, provide talks and experiential sessions, leaving the participants with a renewed sense of hope and optimism and an effective set of skills and knowledge to help them through. Already the Life Program is booked up two months in advance! This program and InspireHealth Victoria itself are supported by an expanding list of weekly classes such as restorative yoga, cancer recovery exercise, meditation and group acupuncture. There are

also care partner support groups, lymphedema information sessions, nutritional support sessions, eating and cooking for optimal health and a class titled Nourishing Life: Ancient Chinese Exercise. On top of this, there is a weekly Fireside Chat from 3:00 to 4:00 pm every Monday, open to the public, where an InspireHealth doctor leads a discussion on cancer recovery and prevention. Under the direction of Dr. Ron Puhky and with the hard work of a dedicated staff, InspireHealth Victoria has quickly established itself as a place where people receive the knowledge and support they need to take charge of their health and improve their recovery. It is now firmly established as a place of knowledge, healing, compassion and support for Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands―a place where you can truly make the transition from the fear of dying to the joy of living. InspireHealth Victoria, serving Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, is located at #212-2187 Oak Bay Avenue in Victoria, B.C. (250) 595-7125 info-vic@ inspirehealth.ca. H

Be Calm with Reiki by Cress Spicer

L

ong hours at work, family obligations, traffic jams, financial issues and an unhealthy diet can all create extra stress in our lives and eventually create imbalances in our physical, emotional and mental health. By realizing that we are stressed out, we can choose to eliminate the stressful situation or use stress reduction techniques such as reiki, yoga and exercise. Reiki has been found to be very beneficial for stress reduction and relaxation by activating the body’s ability to heal itself on all levels: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Reiki is an ancient form of Japanese healing that works with the universal life force energy (called reiki). The reiki practitioner allows the life force energy to flow from their hands through to their client, which assists in activating the healing response in the client’s body.

Powerful, gentle and non-invasive, reiki can assist the body to return to balance and promote health and well-being by increasing the levels of life force energy in the body. Many clients have found that reiki sessions help reduce symptoms of anxiety, digestive disorders, insomnia and chronic stress. Some clients say they could feel the tension melt as the heat of the reiki energy moved through their body. One study by Annie Goldman Shore, PhD, called “Long term effects of energetic healing (reiki) on psychological depression and self perceived stress,” published in Alternative Therapies magazine, concluded that six sessions of reiki were very effective in relieving symptoms of both stress and depression. One year later, retesting showed that the positive results of the six reiki sessions remained intact. In hospitals in the U.K., reiki practitioners

Managing Stress at the Root by Monty C. Ritchings

I

f you were riding in a car at speeds over 100 miles per hour driven by a person sending a text message, how would you feel? Absolutely terrified, right? Would you consider yourself to be stressed? If you were trying to juggle your job, raise your kids, interact with your spouse and trying to keep your finances up to date, how would you feel? Absolutely terrified, right? Would you consider yourself stressed? These two examples show that totally unrelated experiences can result in very similar feelings. But are they really unrelated? On the surface, there appears to be no relationship, but if you look deeper into the emotional relationship they both have at least one similarity: you are being impacted by and reacting to external experiences that you have no control over. When dealing with stress, it is essential to include healthy activities such as eating good food, getting lots of sound sleep, participating in good relationships, drinking plenty of clean alkaline water and getting lots of physical exercise. However, these are only supporting activities for truly managing stress in your life.

Understanding the root cause of stress and how you react to stress will actually affect the amount and manner of stress you feel. As shown in the above examples, there is a strong relationship between feeling fear and feeling stress. Do all people stress about the same things and in the same manner? Absolutely not. Look at the people closest to you, for example. Each of you get stressed about different situations and react in very different ways. This is a good thing, isn’t it? Could you imagine if you all reacted the same way at the same time? So why the difference? How you react to stress is based on the beliefs that you developed as a child. These beliefs are locked in your subconscious mind. In other words, how you learned life as a child is still expressing today in your adult life. The outer cause may be different but if you look at the emotional experience, they will be the same. It’s very likely that most of us experienced many scary occurrences in our childhood, so it only makes sense that when similar activities happen in our adult lives, we react the same. At least until we learn to change our reaction to the root cause.

Recognizing the root The old adage, “One cannot change their past, only how they react to it,” is the very basis of how to manage stress effectively. By learning to recognize when stressors appear or, even better, when they likely will appear you can become more vigilant in redirecting the emotional relationship and expression. Being aware of bodily changes, you realize that you are entering the “stress zone” and can make a choice to alter the path of expression. For example, rather than spazzing out of control, take a breath, step back and make a conscious choice to stay in a managed state. Tools for learning how to consciously manage stress require taking a proactive position. It requires learning how to recognize how you react to stress so that you become aware of your condition as early as possible. After all, it is much easier to manage a little situation than a much bigger one. Managing stress is essential to healthy living. Healthy living is also about managing stress. Book Review

Nature’s Pharmacy—Evidence-Based Alternatives to Drugs Book review by Trudy Peskett

I

f you are looking for a light read, you will not find it with Nature’s Pharmacy—Evidence-Based Alternatives to Drugs. What you will find is an impressive compilation of often hard-to-find research studies chronicling the benefits of natural medicines, whole foods and herbs. Nature’s Pharmacy brings back the lost art of referencing. What began as a few educational sheets for customers at The Organic Grocer, a whole foods market in Surrey, B.C., has evolved over the years into a 500-page valuable reference for consumers and professionals alike. Author Pamela Duff, RN, CSNC, and a longtime HANS member, has her own health story to partially credit for this book’s evolution. She was forced to retire early as a registered nursing director. “Stress, improper eating habits and lack of rest deteriorated my health to such an extent that I basically went home to die,” she writes in the book’s introduction. Eventually, though, she regained her health through natural therapies and knew she could never go back to solitary c onventional methods.

Today, she says her health and quality of life are better than they were 20 years ago. And the experience has allowed her to study health, nutrition and medicine as well as pursue a career in guiding people towards better diets and wise supplement use. From Acid Blockers and Cholesterol-Lowering to Prostate and Vaccines each chapter in Nature’s Pharmacy offers resources for the serious health seeker. Anyone who has ever tried to track down an elusive reference after reading an article online will appreciate the book’s concise details. A free index is available on the book’s website at http://www.innvista.com/books.htm. The book also discusses commonly prescribed drugs and over-the-counter medications, the nutrients these drugs are known to deplete, and suggested alternatives complete with studies backing their benefits. At $35 (including tax), Nature’s Pharmacy is a book you will keep in your health library and refer to time and time again. Available at www.innvista.com. H

Supplements Are How Safe? • You’re 900 times more likely to die from food poisoning than nutritional supplements. • Compared to supplements, you’re 300,000 times more likely to die from a preventable medical injury during a hospital stay. • Adverse reactions to pharmaceutical drugs are 62,000 times more likely to kill you than food supplements. • You’re more likely to die from being struck by lightning or drowning in your bathtub than having a lethal reaction to herbs or supplements. The Mind-Body Connection to Self-Healing by Adam DreamHealer (McLeod)

Y

our mind-body connection is your most direct and powerful access to your own healing potential. By strengthening both the mind and the body you maximize the potential of this vital bond. To strengthen your body, every cell has to efficiently take in essential nutrients, including oxygen. Breathing techniques and physical exercise stimulate this process, sending messages to your mind that you are serious about optimizing your physical condition. These small changes send signals to every cell in your body that you are willing to change. To strengthen your mind, consider the following. Your brain, the physical mechanism of the mind, is the most complicated computer ever created. It is estimated that you have 100 billion nerve cells in your brain with the capacity to create one million new neuronal connections per second. What is most amazing about your brain is its adaptability. It conforms to your own thought processes through expectations, and is always rebuilding, repairing, rewiring and thereby recreating itself. A thought is translated in your brain, then your brain programs modifications to your body to accommodate that thought. What you think is what you get. To optimize your well-being, reprogram yourself to maximize the functioning

of your immune system. Before this can happen, you have to want to change. You might even say that you are willing to do anything to achieve wellness. This desire has to be sincere and focused because change requires both your attention and your intention. Your mind and body will recognize whether you are ready and willing to make changes. If you truly are, you will interpret your intentions to heal as genuine. If

“You can’t fool yourself, but you can change yourself.” you are not, the intentions are not sincere and will be viewed and dismissed by your body as background noise. “What the mind dwells upon, the body acts upon.” ―Dennis Waitley If you are attempting to feed yourself the same old unproductive self-talk and thought patterns, think again. For instance, if you are telling yourself that right after summer vacation you will start an exercise program, what you are really saying is that these changes are not important enough for you to start now. You are attempting to fool yourself, and that will never work. You are too smart for that. You can’t fool

yourself, but you can change yourself. New research in molecular biology shows that environmental factors such as intentions affect your health by directly affecting your metabolism. So how can you use this knowledge to your a dvantage? The first step to change is awareness. Understand how your environment influences you. Become proactive as to how you interpret events in your life. Your perception of their influence is ultimately what affects you, rather than the events themselves. Your sincere intention must be your singular focus. Become self-reflective and totally honest. Focus on how you think. Understand how each thought flows into another thought, and how your thoughts interact with one another. Intention aligns your conscious awareness with your subconscious thoughts and beliefs, getting every cell working toward the same goal. Your conscious intention must be synchronized or aligned with your subconscious intention. This is a pivotal point in strengthening your mind-body connection regarding your healing intention. Your perception makes a huge difference. “Believe that you have it, and you have it.” ―Latin proverb Change any habits or patterns that are not in synchronicity with your healing program. Absorb only information that is helpful to you in your healing.

Let yourself know that you are seriously focused on the path toward change. Each of us has the capacity to focus our intentions and energy when given some guidance. Our thoughts and how we choose to perceive them are governed by our intentions. By tapping into this innate resource, you can always improve your health or any aspect of your life. We just need some simple directions to maximize our awareness and focus our intentions. Visualizations are powerful tools we can all use to create our reality. Visualizations strengthen neural pathways and connections that are beneficial to us. Visualizations are mental exercises aimed at harnessing the power of your intentions. In an effort to understand healing with intentions, I have studied molecular biology and healing at university for eight years. Currently I am in my graduating year of a four-year post-graduate program to become a naturopathic doctor. For the last 10 years, I have held workshops to teach others how to become self-empowered in their healing. My focus is to merge the latest cutting-edge science with the wisdom of my aboriginal forefathers about subtle energy, blended with the channelled insights I’ve received about distant energy healing. Individuals are guided step-by-step in their own self-work within the context of the group. Then I merge the auras of all participants into one coherent frequency when holding group healings. The whole gathering resonates as an ordered energy, creating the ideal conditions to amplify healing intentions. Often participants experience a jumpstart in their healing as they direct their own immune responses. Experience self-empowerment as you transform your reality with the power of your own intentions. Your goal is to activate your own healing mechanisms as effectively as possible. Take responsibility, take charge, take action and be selfempowered.1 H

Take a Leap to Realize Your Dreams by Trish Lim-O’Donnell I have learned, that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. ―Henry David Thoreau

W

e don’t proceed with our dreams or move confidently in the direction of our dreams like Henry David Thoreau admonishes because we fear failure. We have embraced this word “failure” into our language and thus our reality so that it paralyzes us with trepidation when we really want to move towards what we love. For any one of us wanting to live our dreams, we need to absorb this knowledge―understanding that if you don’t do this, you die inside. This feeling of sheer, fearless certainty comes usually after much agony of spirit and mind. There is no easy way around it. You must know intuitively inside, without a doubt, that you need to do this. So many of us want to stay safe and comfortable. We’re taught to think of safety and security, to value that regular paycheque. It is part of our human conditioning so it is hard to break free. Some of

us will go through many years at a work thinking the security is good, only to discover there is no fulfillment, purpose and meaning in it. At some momentous juncture in our human/spiritual life, we seek truth and discover our lost selves. This is our turning point, when the fear of failure, the fear of others’ approval, the fear of losing your security or what you love is far outweighed by what’s driving you inside to move forward. This turning point connects you to a greater meaning beyond the individual self. It moves you towards happiness and peace. Courage is not even a consideration. Rather, it fuels a soul-searing drive to complete an internal vision of what life is about and enables us to zero in on what we need to do to attain that vision. All of us have diverse capacities in gifts and also capacity for risks. We are here to embrace others when they seize the chance to fulfill their dreams. Courage or fearlessness in human spirit exists essentially to inspire and invigorate us. We can all take delight then in what we can do rather than focus on what we can’t. For those whose path is not “do or die” there is comfort in knowing that a simple, normal life can bear sweetness

and comfort. Sweet acceptance for who you are and what you can do in your life to fully engage yourself remains your prerogative. No use beating yourself up over anything. It has no value to you or to the earth. The goal of getting past our fears should be to keep ourselves inspired and engaged in our lives. If you are not, discover what you need and want so that you feel you are living your best life. Anything short of that will cause us to be disenchanted and lose faith in ourselves and in our fellow human beings. Finally, as we get older or more connected spiritually to what is fulfilling inside, we will cease to care about failure. I learnt as a Landmark Education Program graduate that “failure only exists in language, there is only result.” With that, we can cease fearing an outcome that can stop us in “actioning” what we want, we can finally break free from that block and move joyfully in the direction of our dreams.1 H

Get a Charge Out of Earthing by John Harbarenko, BBEC

T

hroughout history, humans have lived in direct physical contact with the earth. However, our modern lifestyle and the mass adoption of synthetic plastic- and rubber-soled shoes have changed this relationship dramatically. In 1998, a retired cable TV executive named Clint Ober sat on a park bench in Arizona, watching tourists pass by. He noticed that almost everyone was wearing plastic- or rubber-soled shoes. Having worked with electronic equipment throughout his career, he understood the electrical significance of insulating materials such as plastic and rubber―and that such shoes would insulate us from naturally occurring electrical energies found on the earth’s surface. Ober set out to answer the question, “Does being disconnected from the electrical energies found on the earth’s surface impact human health and, if so, how?” The book Earthing is the result of more than 10 years of research. It highlights studies that show a direct connection to the earth’s ground energy does, in fact, have a powerful and positive influence on the body, including reduced inflammation and improved circulation.

bromyalgia, lupus and multiple sclerofi sis. In February 2004, the cover article of Time magazine, entitled “The Fires Within,” talked about the many effects of chronic inflammation. When we are in direct contact with the earth, an electrical transfer occurs. Our bodies absorb sub-atomic particles called electrons. These negatively charged electrons appear to absorb the positively charged free-radicals that cause chronic inflammation.

Reduced inflammation Medical science continues to show how chronic inflammation can lead to chronic pain and can be a contributing factor in conditions such as asthma, autism, cancer, cardiovascular disease,

result of the red blood cells acquiring a greater negative charge through earthing and thus being able to better repel other red blood cells. Renowned cardiologist Stephen Sinatra, MD, who has 30 years’ practising in medicine, has said, “I regard earthing as the greatest health breakthrough in all my years in medical practice. Regular grounding (another name for earthing) restores the body’s natural electric state, calms the nervous system, reduces inflammation, and improves circulation. No pill on earth can do what mother earth does!”

Infrared photos, taken 30 minutes apart before (left) and after grounding, show a rapid resolution of inflammation and help illustrate the impact of earthing on chronic pain and stiffness

Improved circulation Studies also indicate that direct contact with the earth results in improved blood circulation. This is the apparent

“Regular grounding restores the body’s natural electric state, calms the nervous system, reduces inflammation, and improves circulation.”

Does earthing work? If you ask my wife, you’ll receive a resounding yes! One year ago, I returned 27 | Health Action | www.hans.org

home from a conference for building biology—the study of how our humanmade environment affects health—with a “bed sheet that you plug into the earth.” I explained to my wife that, just as we’d taken steps to reduce exposure to human-made energies (electromagnetic frequencies or EMFs), it was also important to remain in contact with natural energy sources so prevalent on the earth’s surface. Since the birth of our youngest son almost two years prior, my wife had put up with aching, sore legs and feet. Remarkably, that pain was replaced with a warm tingling sensation within an hour of lying on our new earthing sheet. In the morning, the pain was gone and has not returned. At first skeptical, my wife now firmly believes in the positive effects of earthing. To experience earthing for yourself, simply go barefoot outside for 30 to 60 minutes and see what a difference it makes on your pain or stress level. Sit, stand or walk on grass, sand, dirt or concrete. These are all conductive surfaces from which your body can draw the earth’s energy. Wood, asphalt and vinyl are not conductive surfaces, and as such will not work. Spending a lot of time barefoot outdoors is not always practical or even possible for many people. Earthing products such as conductive sheets and mats allow us the convenience of connecting to the earth while we work, relax or sleep indoors. Earthing is safe and natural for people of all ages, but it is not medicine or a substitute for medical treatment. If you have a medical condition, see your physician or health care provider.1 H
