It’s All about the Cells

T

he older I get, the more I appreciate my mother’s wisdom. Mom, a.k.a. “Grandma” to my own three girls, was a force to be reckoned with— especially when it came to matters of health. In her latter years, she was never far from a blender, which she used to whip up smoothies full of parsley and other greens. Underlying this habit was the understanding of the importance of nourishing the body.

When your cells are weak, it’s harder for your body to withstand illness and trauma. When your cells are weak, it can affect you not only physically but also mentally, emotionally and even spiritually.

This message comes back time and again in my life, most recently with an injury sustained to one of my family.

So this edition of Health ­Action takes us back to the basics of cell health.

Good nutrition is the foundation. In ­Jason Sebeslav’s article on probiotics, he asks, “Should hospital staff be washing their hands with yogurt rather than antibacterial soap?” We’ll leave it to ­Jason to discuss that point in depth, but there is no doubt that we need good bacteria in our bodies. Sondi Bruner’s article on the best diet to treat candida

addresses how to fight off this fungal threat to cellular integrity.

Free radicals also damage the cells and cause disease and premature ­aging. Inflammation caused by damage is the subject of Dr. Pamela Hutchinson’s ­article on page 10 on brain health.

How do we protect ourselves? Diet and lifestyle is the message I get. In other words, do whatever we can to protect the cells.

External threats to our cells can ­include electromagnetic radiation, so you will find the latest information on the smart meter issue on page 8.

Although the regulatory ­problems facing the natural health product ­industry aren’t a direct threat to our cells in the same sense that fungus or free radicals are, they’re arguably an indirect hazard. Sometimes Grandma’s parsley drinks just aren’t strong enough and we need various nutritional supplements that strengthen our cells. So what would happen to us if those supplements disappeared? Shawn Buckley, president of the Natural Health Products Protection Association, carries on this conversation with his editorial on page 6, ­“Safety Is a Dangerous Word.”

Safety Is a Dangerous Word

ost consumers of natural health products have already noticed that products are disappearing.

For most it is not a crisis yet. If a product they were using disappears, they can usually find a substitute. Because of this, many are rather complacent. Until you cannot get something you need for your health, there simply is no crisis. Some even support the Natural Health Products Regulations that are driving natural products off of the market because they ­believe the government’s assertion that this is necessary for our “safety.”

I confess that I get quite upset when people tell me the Regulations are necessary for our “safety.” Indeed, I am now of the opinion that the word “safety” when used by politicians and bureaucrats is the most dangerous word in the English language. It is the only word that overrides critical analysis in the population and leads the average citizen to willingly give up freedoms.

I am also currently having some real difficulties with Health Canada’s use of safety as a justification to ­demand that natural products be removed from the market. In my law practice I give ­advice to people facing enforcement ­action by Health Canada’s Inspectorate.

It is common for Health Canada to write a ­demand letter that states that a ­consumer has complained about a product or products that are unlicensed. The sections of the Regulations requiring ­licensing are set out in the letter. Then there is a demand to stop selling all of

the products by a specific date. Incidentally, at times the letter does not arrive before the arbitrary stop-selling date.

Health Canada never discloses the identity of the “consumer.” Nor will they give any useful details of the complaint. This does not, of course, comply with the legal duty of procedural fairness, but the law never deters Health Canada. I always take these assertions of complaints with a grain of salt. ­Several years ago I was defending ­companies

At the time I believe those cases were all of the court proceedings Health Canada had against natural health companies. If I recall correctly all were begun by a “consumer” complaint by a person who is a professional complainer and who publicly admits he is funded by the pharmaceutical industry. This meant, in effect, that all of Health Canada’s court actions to take down natural health products at the time were really at the behest of the ­pharmaceutical industry.

stop selling because a “consumer” has complained about a lack of a licence is quite curious. We know, for example, that the same products can be sold in the U.S. without a licence and that the ­Canadian requirement for a licence is relatively new. By my estimate ­roughly half of the natural products on the ­market are still unlicensed. For Health Canada to pretend that there is a ­serious health risk because a product does not have a licence is stretching things. Indeed, the same unlicensed products in the U.S. are presumed by law to be safe.

To put the problem in perspective, what Health Canada’s practice means is that I could complain to Health ­Canada about any unlicensed product. Without knowing how many people take the product or what health benefits there are, Health Canada would then ­blindly demand that the product be removed from the market. There could be thousands of people who rely on the ­product to manage serious health conditions.

Many could be taking the product under the supervision of their doctors.

In ­effect, my complaint would override the medical decisions of everyone taking the product. My complaint would also override the advice of their doctors. This can only be described as ­reckless and dangerous.

Indeed, the persons who receive these demands to stop selling run a ­significant legal risk if they blindly follow Health Canada’s demands. In Canada one cannot put a treatment on the

­ arket, have people come to rely on m it and then remove it without warning.

If injury or death results, they can be convicted of criminal negligence. The ­penalty for criminal negligence causing death is life imprisonment. Any letters providers of natural products receive from consumers who tell of the benefits of their products need to be taken seriously and safeguarded. There is a clear legal duty owed to those people.

Health Canada not only ignores the risks of removing health products from the market, they brag about it. People who have complained to Health Canada about losing access to natural products have sent me Health Canada replies. In some of these replies, Health ­Canada actually brags about the number of natural products they have forced off of the market. Apparently overriding the health decisions of individuals and their medical practitioners is something to brag about. But don’t worry. It’s for your own “safety.”1 H

Smart Meters­—BC Groups Turn Up the Heat What you can do

pposition to the BC Liberals’ Clean Energy Act and wireless smart meters continues to grow around BC with 31 municipalities supporting community-wide moratorium and “opt out” choices. These local government resolutions represent over 1.4 million people. You, too, can request your local council pass similar resolutions supporting democratic and human rights; contact Sharon Noble of the Coalition to Stop Smart Meters at dsnoble@shaw.ca for more information.

The Citizens for Safe Technology ­Society (CST) has started a human rights ­action and is calling for individuals with medical reasons for refusing a wireless meter to download the Doctor’s Information Package in the CST Smart Meter Action Kit at www.citizensforsafetechnology.org. Medical letters can be submitted directly to una@ citizensforsafetechnology.org for inclusion in the human rights action.

The Coalition to Stop Smart Meters and CST have also filed a complaint with the BC Utilities Commission ­requesting a stop to the smart meter regime, claiming in part that the Clean Energy Act has no provision for wireless smart ­meters and its installation is therefore outside the scope of this Act. Many groups and individuals are registering their right to participate in a public hearing, including COPE 378. Any individual or group may exercise their right to participate by contacting the

BC Utilities ­Commission, referencing Andrea Collins, the Citizens for Safe ­Technology Society and BC Hydro via email to Commission.Secretary@bcuc. com.

A new campaign started in February called “I Love Democracy More Than Smart Meters” aims at reaching as many signatures as possible on the CST Petition, which will be presented in the BC legislature in Victoria. The petition

“Many people want to know how to refuse a wireless smart meter.” can be signed online or in hard copy, and can be found on the CST website on the right side of every page, https://cstorg. wufoo.com/forms/q7x3s5/. Please note that this is a continuation of the petition and you are not required to sign it again if you have already done so.

Preregistration for the initiative ­petition under the BC Recall & Initiative Act is continuing at www. stopsmartmeters.ca, and we encourage everyone to support this effort, which has the ­power to compel the government to ­eliminate smart meters with an official vote (similar to HST) that will take place in 2014.

Many people want to know how to protect their analogue meter and refuse a wireless smart meter. First, download

the letter of non-consent from the CST Smart Meter Action Kit. Email the letter following the instructions and then send it by registered mail to BC Hydro and Corix (the installers). Second, download the No Trespassing notice, which must be signed and dated and affixed to your front door as well as on the meter. This notice fits nicely into a large Ziploc bag to protect from moisture. If you have a medical letter or other notices refusing the smart meter, these should also be posted beside your analogue meter.

There are many different ways people are choosing to “lock up their meters,” from wire baskets to works of art.

A growing number of people are choosing to stay strong in the face of aggressive installation tactics and they are insisting that all correspondence be in writing for legal reasons. Many find that taking a video and/or recording telephone conversations provides protection and documentation. If BC Hydro is requesting a personal meeting, you will find a form letter you can use under “Reply to Hydro” on the CST website. Polite refusals to Corix employees are recommended. The Coalition has started a harassment and intimidation incident report that is automatically filed with political leaders and public health and safety personnel. American Academy of Environmental Medicine Opposes Smart Meters In a January 2012 letter to the California Public Utilities Commission, the board of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine stated that the Academy opposed the installation of wireless smart meters in homes and schools.

Here is an excerpt of their concerns.

“Chronic exposure to wireless radiofrequency radiation is a preventable environmental hazard that is sufficiently well documented to warrant immediate preventative public health action.

“Existing FCC guidelines for RF safety that have been used to justify installation of smart meters only look at thermal tissue damage and are obsolete, since many modern studies

show metabolic and ­genomic damage from RF and ELF exposures below the level of intensity which heats tissues…More modern literature shows medically and biologically significant effects of RF and ELF at lower energy d­ ensities.

“The current medical literature raises credible questions about ­genetic and cellular ­effects, ­hormonal effects, male ­fertility, blood/brain barrier damage and ­increase risk of certain types of cancers from RF or ELF levels similar to those emitted from smart meters. Children are placed at ­particular risk for altered brain development, and impaired learning and b­ ehaviour.”

Heart Health and Brain Health. Think There’s No Link?

Think again.

T

he idea that we need to think about brain health like we do about heart health has hit the mainstream as baby boomers begin to feel the effects of poor brain health. Memory problems, mood disorders, lost words, forgetting facts once known well―many are facing these problems and wondering if this is just the tip of the iceberg.

For some, these symptoms are the beginning years of decline into dementia. But for others, it is simply aging, which is not to say it cannot be avoided or at least limited. And for those who are at the crest of clinical cognitive decline, ­evidence shows that early action can limit the ­severity of illness.

When we think of heart health, we think of things like doing aerobic exercise, eating less animal fats, controlling our blood sugar and limiting stress. Remarkably, or maybe not-so-remarkably, these same changes benefit the brain.

The major culprit Growing evidence indicates that chronic inflammation, a major ­player in heart and vascular disease, is also one of the main contributing factors to the ­development of dementia and mild

“All of us have lowgrade inflammation going on in our bodies all the time.” c­ ognitive decline. In fact, laboratory tests for inflammation are one of several factors we can use to estimate someone’s relative risk for developing vascular or Alzheimer’s dementia.

Chronic inflammation can be caused by food allergies, high stress, poor sleep, or a high fat or high sugar diet. All of us have low-grade inflammation going on in

our bodies all the time. It is a byproduct of cellular metabolism. However, if we don’t have what we need to cool it down, calm it down or quench it―like antioxidants and good omega-3 fats—then it burns at a higher rate and, over time, this causes ­degenerative conditions in the heart, the cardiovascular system and the brain.

It probably won’t surprise you that low-grade inflammation is also going to have an impact beyond the heart and mind.

Our joints, muscles, liver, kidneys—in fact, every tissue is affected by inflammation. Reducing inflammatory pressure in anyone will pay dividends beyond whatever “dis-ease” initiated the interventions in the first place. The question is, how do we do this?

Top Risk Factors for Alzheimer’s Disease Alzheimer’s may be prevented through simple lifestyle changes such as increasing physical activity and quitting smoking, suggests a new study published online in The Lancet Neurology.

Through statistical analysis, lead ­researcher Deborah Barnes, a professor at the University of California in San Francisco, and her colleagues found that ­seven known behaviour-related risk ­factors combined account for 50 percent of the more than 35 million cases of dementia worldwide: 1. low level of education – linked to 19 percent of cases

2. smoking – 14 percent 3. physical inactivity – 13 percent 4. depression – 11 percent 5. midlife hypertension – 5 ­percent 6. obesity – 2 percent 7. diabetes – 2 percent Another recent study online in Neurology that relied on over 7,200 ­responses to the Canadian Study of Health and ­Aging suggests that engaging in healthy behaviours could help lower risk for ­Alzheimer’s and dementia. Researchers said that single risk factors ranging from eyesight quality and dental issues to ­arthritis and heart disease tended to be

less important than overall general health.

Moreover, leading an active and healthy life when younger likely leads to better brain health when older.

According to Medscape Medical News (July 15, 2011), “This study makes perfect sense because all the deficits that the researchers looked at—even problems such as badly fitting dentures— cause ­inflammation,” commented George Bartzokis, MD, professor of psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles, David Geffen School of Medicine. “And inflammation can hurt the brain.”

like blueberries, blackberries and plums over light-coloured fruits like bananas.

These provide potent antioxidants that help quench inflammation-causing free radicals. They are also alkalinizing foods, and alkalinizing the body helps to reduce inflammation.

2. Drink green tea or matcha green tea. One to three cups a day will drastically increase the amount of inflammationfighting antioxidants in your system.

3. Limit land animal fats and ­increase fish oil, olive oil, flaxseed oil and hemp seed oil. Land animal fats, like those found in beef, chicken skin, ­butter, milk and other dairy products, contain fats that encourage the production of ­inflammatory mediators that encourage free-radical damage to body cells.

Shifting the balance of fats we consume away from land animal fats to the omega-3 and -6 fats in fish and seed oils makes a big difference in the amount of inflammation your body can produce. In addition, your brain needs these healthy fats to function properly. Ginkgo Biloba:The Longevity Herb

H

ave you lost a little spring in your step? What about a little bounce in your brain? As long as you don’t have any serious medical problems, exercising and eating right will ward off the physical signs of aging.

Mental fitness can be more difficult to maintain―unless you know the secrets of ginkgo biloba.

Ginkgo biloba is a herbal star that has been used safely for over 3,000 years. One way gingko increases longevity is by helping to rid your body of cell-destroying free radicals. The extract from the tree is a free radical scavenger and antioxidant. It inactivates free radicals, protects the genetic material in cells and helps slow down aging.

How does ginkgo fight aging? First, it widens blood vessels so more blood can flow through. Scientists have isolated compounds called flavonoids in ginkgo extract. These flavonoids force the blood vessels to relax, which allows them to carry more blood.

Second, it keeps platelets in the blood separated by blocking platelet activating factor or PAF, which triggers blood clotting when you have an injury― a good thing. But PAF can also cause the platelets to clump too much within your blood vessels. Medical doctors often prescribe blood-thinning drugs for people as they get older to avoid thickening

of the blood. By blocking PAF, ginkgo acts as a natural blood thinner.

Third, ginkgo keeps the bad LDL cholesterol from clumping up on the blood vessel walls, keeping the veins and arteries wide open for maximum blood flow.

As you age, your body has a ­harder time sending the brain all the blood it needs to properly function. Imagine the drain pipe from the kitchen sink. Over time, water drains through the pipe a little slower―this happens in everybody’s kitchen. If you pour in a little drain ­opener, the water starts to flow ­faster.

That’s ­exactly what ginkgo can do for your blood flow to your brain.

Sprouting to the Next Level

he unassuming sprout, long relegated to hippie-sandwich-filler status, is now taking centre stage.

It has taken a long time to do so: As far back as the 1920s individuals have made claims about sprouts as a way of alkalizing the body and promoting a biogenic diet (“bios” = life, “genic” = creating). In 1997 a doctor from Johns Hopkins Uni-

versity named Paul Talalay stated that, “Three-day-old broccoli sprouts consistently contain 20 to 50 times the amount of chemoprotective compounds found in mature broccoli heads, and may ­offer a simple, dietary means of ­chemically ­reducing cancer risk.” Now, we see hundreds of websites and professionals pointing towards sprouts as an enzyme- and nutrient-rich way of promoting good health and warding off disease.

started growing their own by soaking the seeds in water, but found that they did not taste the same as those grown in a garden.

Some of the most interesting sprouts, such as peas, lentils and sunflower, don’t grow well in water and will usually mold before they mature. Even those who already eat a diet full of vegetable and fruits will benefit from adding sprouts to their plate. “We feel more energetic,” Morning says. “It’s hard to explain; you’ve got to experience it for yourself.”

Morning adds that he is not a gardening expert but that he wishes to have as much professional information as possible to educate the public about the benefits of sprouting and the advantages of the cabinet he has designed. “To enable me to give as much information on ­proper sprouting as possible (what are the best nutrients, watering cycles, etc.), I would be willing to give a unit for free to any gardening professional who would give me the appropriate information as well as feedback on how our sprouting cabinet performs versus other solutions.”

While numerous studies refer to the benefits of sprouts, some caution is ­needed. Commercially grown sprouts are associated with multiple outbreaks of harmful bacteria like salmonella or the toxic forms of Escherichia coli. Such infections, which are so frequent in the United States that investigators call them “sproutbreaks,” may be a result of contaminated seeds or of unhygienic production with high microbial counts. All the more reason to know for a fact where your sprouts are coming from! Then you can say with the same enthusiasm as ­Morning, “We love our sprouts!”

The Power of Soul in Every Cell

n the 20th century, “mind over matter” was emphasized. In the 21st century, “soul over matter” will play the vital role in healing and transforming all life.

This is the philosophy behind the group Love Peace Harmony Vancouver. apply. “The soul inhabits every cell in our body, even our DNA,” states Sha. “Heal the soul first, then healing of the mind and body will follow.”

Soul power is based on the concept that everyone and everything has a soul.

It is not simply acknowledging that you have a soul, but that every organ, every system and every cell within your body has a soul. Pain and disease are imbalances that result from blockages within these systems, organs and cells. Love has the ability to melt all blockages, creating healing and transformation of every aspect of life. In a soul healing session, the Four Power techniques are used. For an idea of

how this works, imagine a physical area of pain in the body, for example, a painful knee. Body power involves holding the hands on the pain site or across the abdomen where your physical power resides.

Mind power involves creative visualization of pure golden light. Chanting brings in sound power, using the words “Golden light heals my knee” several times a day.

Then soul power is manifested by an invocation like, “Dear soul, mind and body of my leg: I love you, honour and appreciate you. I am grateful to you for carrying me well all these years. You have the power to heal yourself.” By giving a soul command and communicating with love, all blockages to healing are undone.

Other electrical energy devices ­exist, like the standard TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation). But most electrical energy machines only have an output device; both the ElectroAcuscope and Myopulse have an input and an output device.

The Electro-Acuscope and Myopulse each provide a biofeedback reading―from the input device―that shows electrical energy in your tissues. The output device then gives out a corrective electrical signal that works to open up the cells, release toxins and restore ­normal cell electricity.

The goal is to return the body to a regenerative state. “It’s about getting the body to do what it’s supposed to do, to ­repair itself.”

“This is not a quick fix,” Jacquie adds. For simple pain relief only one treatment may be needed but those with a ­chronic condition may require treatment over several weeks or months. Jacquie recommends at least three treatments in a row because of their cumulative effect.

Quick fix or not, I leave the office feeling positive effects from the endorphin pump and neck work. I move my neck around freely, amazed at the improved range of motion. (I suffer neck pain as a result of an old whiplash ­injury and sitting long hours at the computer.)

That night I had one of the most comfortable sleeps in a long time.

From Trauma to Transformation: Embracing Our Innate Ability to Heal

I

n our attempts to heal our past, talk therapy can lead to better understanding and coping. However, we often find the same familiar patterns playing out in our bodies, wreaking havoc with our ability to engage in life. This is ­because our bodies operate on a level deeper than what our cognitive brains typically have access to.

Our bodies can remember experiences where we have not felt safe or OK, leaving our nervous system on the lookout for similar situations so that we can be ready to protect ourselves next time.

When our nervous system registers one of these threats, we either go into high alert―adrenaline pumping, ready to go―or we freeze. In the midst of such a physiological response, the body is not ­interested in listening to our brain’s reasoning; it is only interested in responding to the sense of danger.

Talking about past trauma does not alter these physiological response patterns. The body has its own story to tell and it is demanding to be heard.

I believe that true healing must ­involve enabling the body to tell its ­ story―enabling the body to process,

r­ esolve, release and integrate past trauma.

Trauma here refers to not only horrific or life-threatening events but also to any experience that is too big for the system to fully move through and integrate at the time of the event.

It is not the event that defines the experience as trauma; it is the individual’s perception of the event as a threat to ­safety and the way the nervous system adapts to be prepared for similar events. This then leaves us living our lives through ­distorted adaptations that can be triggered by the smallest of events.

However, the body knows how to tell its story if we remember how to listen!

The body knows how to move through these experiences and restore itself to a healthy regulated state, enabling us to ­accurately assess our current safety.

There are many ways to facilitate the body in moving through these old stories, including body-focused activities such as certain forms of meditation, breath work, massage, yoga and primal dance. In the realm of psychotherapy there are scientifically recognized modalities such as Peter Levine, PhD’s Somatic Experiencing®.

Somatic Experiencing brings con-

scious awareness to the here-and-now body experience. We gently touch in to trauma while also weaving in the body’s known experience of safety and connection. This engages one’s inherent body wisdom to move through old body memories and enable the nervous system to ­restore itself to its natural pre-trauma state with the capacity to engage in life more fully, with greater flexibility and ease.

The implications of healing ­trauma cross over into the spiritual realm. In Trauma and Spirituality, Peter Levine talks about how surrendering to our trauma can lead to spiritual transformation.

He writes that, in his experience, as “individuals mastered the traumas that had haunted them—emotionally, physically, and psychologically, unexpected ‘side effects’ appeared. Seemingly out of nowhere, these surprises included ecstatic joy, exquisite clarity, effortless focus, and an all-embracing sense of oneness.”

Through our nervous system, we have the ability to perceive and connect with others and with our environment and, ultimately, with all that is. Therefore, as the trauma disruptions in our nervous system are healed, we are literally restoring the capacity of human potential―which I believe is unlimited. This ability to reach our potential is inherent in our being and our body is waiting to take us on the journey from trauma to transformation.

To Vaccinate or Not Vaccinate Your Child

s a parent, one of the most difficult decisions you may make for your child is regarding immunizations. Vaccines are such a broad topic with many facts, scare tactics and opinions out there that informed consent for parents can be difficult.

The concern is not only the ­vaccine itself, but also the preservatives and ­adjuncts (or adjuvants, substances that make the vaccine work better) added to them. Most of the parent complaints I hear in my office are about the preservatives in vaccines, the large number of vaccines given at once and whether booster shots are really needed. Alternatives to vaccines are also a hot topic.

This article is not intended to try to persuade you one way or the other, but to inform you about the options or lack of options that are available in Canada.

Preservatives and adjuncts In Canada, it is impossible to get a standard vaccine that does not have preservatives and adjuncts in it.

Today there are different preservatives used, the most common being 2-phenoxyethanol. The use of ­mercury in the preservative thimerosal should be mentioned. Since 2011, mercury has been ­taken out of childhood vaccines in ­Canada. This is a very good thing!

Let’s spend a little more time on the use of aluminum as an adjunct. Aluminum is added to the vaccines to increase the immune response to the vaccine.

Typically aluminum wouldn’t be considered an issue, as it is everywhere in our environment―our food, ­water and soil. When ingested orally, aluminum isn’t absorbed well through the ­intestines. But with vaccines, aluminum is injected directly into the body, so all of it is absorbed.

What is the safe level of ­injected aluminum? It has been found that 4 to 5 micrograms (mcg) per kilogram of body weight can cause buildup in both the brain and bones. For an average adult, this amount would be 350 mcg whereas for a baby this would be 10 to 20 mcg per injection. The amount of aluminum is the same in an infant dose as an adult dose.

Here is a list of the amount of aluminum per shot in some common vaccines: • Haemophilus influenzae typeB (Hib): 225 mcg • Hepatitis B: 250 mcg • Diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus (DtaPs): 170–625 mcg • Combo vaccines: 330–850 mcg Single-dose vaccines Until recently, one was able to order

a single-dose vaccine. For example, instead of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine, you could get each one individually. This gave patients the option of having the injections at different times with the rationale that the immune system could handle separate doses better. Single doses would perhaps be of benefit during a measles outbreak, in which boosters could be given to the public, and for women found to be without rubella immunity (checked during pregnancy) who wanted to get vaccinated against the disease.

Vaccines are presently not available in single doses in Canada. A few years back, this was not an issue, but the pharmaceutical companies have stopped making single doses. Most of the alternatives to vaccines (such as single-dose vaccines and preservative/adjunct-free vaccines) as described by Dr. Sears in his popular book, The Vaccine Book, are no ­longer or were never available in Canada and ­becomingly increasingly unavailable in the U.S. as well.

Titer test So there is the bad news, but what can be done about it?

One solution may be to test for blood titers. This blood test looks at the amount of IgG antibodies to a certain disease to see if the individual has ­immunity, ­whether

naturally (from having the ­disease) or ­artifically (through a vaccine). The test can be done for all the viral diseases that we commonly vaccinate for.

Roughly speaking, with the first vaccine dose, 60 percent of those vaccinated will be immune, the second dose about 75 percent and the third dose up to 95 percent will have immunity. There is a small percentage of individuals that vaccines do not work for. Thus your child might gain immunity from one vaccine and no boosters or might have no immunity at all from the recommended doses.

So why are titers not typically done?

In my opinion, the cost and parental emotions are the reasons. Titers are covered by the Medical Services Plan if the doctor sees fit to have it done. The rubella ­titer is routinely done during pregnancy.

If you’re studying abroad, titers are sometimes recommended by the school if vaccine records are lost. Paid for privately, titers cost about $35 per disease.

As for parent emotion, most parents have a hard time seeing their child in distress. It is hard enough to see your little one getting a shot let alone drawing blood for the titer test. Once the titer is done, a child who is found to not have immunity would still need to get the combo dose― remember, single-dose vaccines are no longer an option. If the child becomes ­immune with the first vaccine, there is no need for the boosters.

Alternative to vaccines We would like to make this point very clear: there is no alternative to vaccines. If you are looking for immunity for a specific virus like the measles, there is nothing naturopathically that can be given that is the same as a vaccine. Having said that, there are many things that you can do naturally to boost your child’s whole immune system and help prevent the illness.

If only the decision to vaccinate or not to vaccinate was more black and white. It really is up to the parents and what they feel is right for their child.1 H

Chinese Medicine for Baby Eczema

I

t is every parent’s wish that their child grows up healthy and every parent’s nightmare when their child becomes ill. Atopic eczema is no exception. The ­incessant itch and associated lack of sleep is exhausting for child and parent alike.

A few years ago, Sam, an 11-monthold with bad eczema, came into my c­ linic wearing socks on his hands to stop him from scratching. Sam’s mother had ­already tried many other remedies including an allergy elimination diet to see if any foods she was eating were affecting Sam through her breast milk. But all ­attempts at figuring out an allergen were in vain, as the eczema remained the same no matter what she did or did not eat. Like many other mothers, she became paranoid to eat anything at all for fear she was somehow poisoning him. She continued to blame herself for his condition.

While sometimes the simple ­removal of such things as wheat or dairy may prove beneficial, often times it is not so easy. I regularly remind mothers that ­eczema can be due to things beyond just our diet. Tears swelled up in the mother’s eyes when I told her that I did not think anything in her breast milk was making Sam sick and that she should breast-feed with confidence.

Sam was covered from head to toe in a very red rash, which was quite wet in certain areas like his neck, wrists and ankles.

In Chinese medicine we prescribe herbal medicines based on the degree of wetness versus dryness seen on the skin, thus focusing the treatment on the i­ndividual.

I diagnosed Sam with eczema due to dampness mixed with heat and prescribed an external herbal wash, as well as a tea that his mother would give him via a s­yringe several times per day.

Sam continued on herbs for about one year, having minor flares from time to time, but nothing nearly as bad as when he first came to see me. Overall, he cleared by about 90 percent. While I always hope for total clearing with my patients, sometimes all herbal medicines can do is to offer safer management, something that both my experience and modern research has confirmed. How to Cure Candida A low-sugar or low-fat diet?

eep in our bellies lives a wily, tentacled, opportunistic fungus and its name is candida. When the digestive tract is balanced, candida lives harmoniously with its neighbours.

But when good bacteria decreases, candida takes over, leading to problems like fatigue, headaches, itchy skin, eczema, rashes, brain fog, aches and pains.

“Candida is extremely common,” says Glynis de Crewe-LeBlanc of Lifelong Health (www.lifelonghealth.ca), a clinic of traditional Chinese medical doctors, acupuncturists and herbalists in White Rock. “A large percentage of the population is walking around with it.”

Candida adores sugar and uses simple carbohydrates as its main source of fuel.

When candida takes hold, it steals nutrients and, like a little devil on your shoulder, encourages sugar cravings to ensure its survival. Traditionally, a low-sugar, low-carbohydrate approach has been the favoured treatment for candida. This involves eliminating all refined sugars, simple carbohydrates and, in many cases, all fruits. The idea is to starve the candida of its primary food source so it will die.

But now a growing number of practitioners are considering low-fat diets to address candida. They maintain that too much fat in the blood can cause insulin resistance, which means that sugars aren’t carried into the cells as quickly as they should be. Sugar then accumulates in the bloodstream, leaving a prime meal for candida to feast on.

Low-sugar vs. low-fat Avoiding sugar can be the simplest and most direct way of starving sugarhungry candida and preventing further

overgrowth. Typically, low-sugar diets are also high in fibre, providing a good environment for healthy gut bacteria and promoting the elimination of wastes.

One downside to this approach is that our bodies need carbohydrates to function optimally―especially the brain, which runs on glucose. And a diet that limits all carbohydrates, even fruit (which has beneficial properties), can be difficult for people to follow and stick to.

“From a holistic perspective, any time we restrict a macronutrient, whether it’s protein, fats or carbs, it’s going to come as a detriment to a certain extent,” says Dr. Jason Marr (www.drmarr.com), a

At Lifelong Health, practitioners use a combination of both low-sugar and lowfat foods to address candida.

“The fatty foods definitely feed yeast,” de Crewe-LeBlanc says. “It’s the acidic factor in the fat, and anything that is acidic feeds bad bacteria.”

By limiting carbohydrates and bad fats while promoting alkaline-forming foods, de Crewe-LeBlanc believes that clients can effectively banish candida, as it cannot live in an alkaline environment.

Dr. Marr says that low-fat diets aren’t

the answer to candida, since our bodies need fat to make essential things like hormones and cholesterol. With regards to the argument of insulin sensitivity, he says that carbs―not fat―are the ultimate culprit in that scenario.

“There is some merit behind insulin resistance increasing the sugar that is available for candida to thrive on,” he says. “But insulin resistance comes with obesity, poor diet choices, high glycemic index foods and high levels of refined sugars. You could certainly induce resistance by eating a lot of fat, but ­generally it’s a high-carb diet that causes insulin ­resistance.”

Ultimately, a fad diet, whether it’s low-sugar or low-fat, doesn’t address the entire picture. Lifelong Health uses a variety of methods to treat candida, including cleanses, food combining, fasting, colon hydrotherapy, Chinese herbs and ozone therapy. Dr. Marr might suggest additional supports like probiotics, caprylic acid, hydrastis or grapeseed extract.

And nothing beats a balanced, ­nutrient-dense diet filled with whole foods to combat candida or prevent it from happening in the first place.

“Changing the terrain of the digestive system, your blood and lymphatic system makes it less likely for any candida to grow,” says de Crewe-LeBlanc.

The C. difficile Dilemma: A Place for Probiotics?

hould doctors and other hospital staff be washing their hands with yogurt rather than antibacterial soap? This odd-sounding suggestion was part of a recent discussion paper by Professor Mark Spigelman of the UCL Centre for Infectious Diseases and International Health. In the paper, Spigelman questioned the current practice of ­using broad-spectrum antibacterial agents on hospital staff’s hands and patients’ wounds, often stripping them of beneficial bacteria only to lay a welcome mat for potentially deadly superbugs.

“Any student who has grown bacteria in a lab will know that they generally do not grow on top of one another,” he pointed out. “So when we wash our hands, we could actually be killing off harmless [normal] bacteria to the extent that we leave space for other bacteria, such as MRSA [Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus known as superbugs] strains, to settle.”

Spigelman suggested a better ­defence may be to actually encourage the “good” bacteria (probiotics) so that they can discourage the growth of “bad” bacteria.

“Perhaps we should be thinking about ­using probiotics,” he said, “and even dipping our hands after thorough washing into a solution which contains harmless bacteria, which could then colonize our skin and prevent pathogenic bacteria from settling on it.”

Probiotic power Spigelman’s idea may seem radical or ridiculous to some. But for those of us in the natural health field, it makes good sense. Better yet, it’s a sign that modern medicine is beginning to understand and

accept the great health potential of probiotics.

“Probiotics” refers to a wide range of beneficial bacteria that normally colonize a healthy intestinal tract. Along with aiding digestion and nutrient absorption, and supporting the immune system, probiotics compete for space with troublesome intestinal bacteria including E. coli and C. difficile. Just as in Dr. Spigelman’s handwashing example, the more good ­intestinal bacteria we have inside, the less chance that bad bacteria have to take hold when they enter the system.

One of the main threats to healthy levels of good intestinal bacteria is the use of antibiotics. While antibiotics are often

As Health Canada explains on its website about C. difficile, this nasty intestinal bug can settle in when good bacteria is sparse: “Using antibiotics increases the chance of developing C. difficile diarrhea. Treatment with antibiotics alters the normal levels of good bacteria found in the intestines and colon. When there are fewer of these good bacteria in our intestines and colon, C. difficile has the chance to thrive and produce toxins.”

Star supplement: S. boulardii It’s encouraging to learn that in some progressive hospitals, particularly in

­ urope, patients are routinely given proE biotic supplements to help guard against hospital-acquired infections like C. difficile and associated diarrhea. I’m also encouraged to see some local doctors ­beginning to send patients to our store for high-quality probiotics to take along with an antibiotic prescription.

One of the most well-researched supplements in this class is a probiotic yeast known as Saccharomyces boulardii. Along with encouraging the growth of good bacteria, S. boulardii helps to reduce the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea by limiting the ability of bacterial toxins to bind to the intestinal wall. Studies suggest that taking S. boulardii may also prevent a recurrence of C. difficile-related diarrhea, which is a common problem for many infected patients. Look for S. boulardii products in health food stores.

Protect yourself!

While hospital and medical staff may be doing their best to control the spread of disease-causing pathogens in hospitals, we can also protect ourselves. If you’re prescribed antibiotics or are required to visit or stay in a hospital, consider a high-quality probiotic supplement to help boost your protective, beneficial bacteria.

After all, it may be a while before those hand-sanitizer dispensers are filled with yogurt!1 H

Have You Tried Greek Yogurt?

As part of Dr. Jonn Matsen’s Eating Alive Program, we recommend that you choose plain yogurt over the flavoured ones that are so popular on TV. Flavoured yogurts are touted to be healthy because of the beneficial bacteria that they contain. However, the fact that they also contain sugar defeats the benefits of the healthy bacteria because the sugar actually feeds any intestinal yeast that you may have and the yeast competes with the good bacteria.

If you don’t like plain yogurt because of its taste, then you’re in for a treat if you try Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is thicker and creamier than regular yogurt because it is strained three times instead of two.

Greek yogurt also contains more protein, fewer carbohydrates and less sodium than its regular counterpart. The only drawback is that it also contains less calcium.

Greek yogurt is also better to use in cooking because it doesn’t curdle when heated. And because it’s so thick, it’s great to use in dips and sauces. Or use it in place of regular yogurt when making tzatziki and other dips.

If you prefer a sweeter taste, add a small amount of natural sweetener such as honey, pure vanilla extract, stevia or cinnamon. Or stir in some chopped fruit.

I like to add frozen raspberries to plain Greek yogurt and eat it once the berries have thawed. I find that it doesn’t need any added sweetener.

Book Review Alzheimer’s Disease: What If There Was a Cure?

r. Mary T. Newport practises ­pediatrics with a specialty in ­neonatology.

Thought it’s far afield from Alzheimer’s disease, she began coping with the disease after her beloved husband, Steve, ­began showing signs of Alzheimer’s around 2000. Desperate to find a way to keep Steve functional as long as possible, Dr. Newport began researching after his rapid deterioration began in 2004. Quite by chance in 2008, she discovered that medium-chain fatty acids can sometimes reverse or at least stabilize the disease.

When Steve took about two tablespoons of coconut oil (a source of these fatty ­acids) at breakfast before a memory test, the results were dramatic: Steve passed the test with flying colours. Since then, Steve has continued to maintain improvement while taking daily doses of coconut oil fortified with medium-chain triglyceride oil with meals.

Onion, Mushroom and Spinach Sauce This sauce can be used on steak, roast beef or chicken. It’s also good served over poached eggs on toast. If you want to omit the toast, just put some sauce in a bowl and serve the poached eggs on top.

1/2 tablespoon (7.5 ml) coconut oil 1/2 tablespoon (7.5 ml) butter 1 shallot, chopped, or 1/2 small onion, chopped (see Notes) 1/2 pound mushrooms, chopped 2 cups (500 ml) fresh spinach

1 cup (250 ml) plain Greek yogurt sea salt and pepper, to taste Melt the coconut oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the shallot and mushrooms, cover and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring often. Stir in the spinach, cover and cook, stirring once or twice, for 2 to 3 minutes or until the spinach is wilted. Stir in the yogurt and heat through. Season to taste with sea salt and pepper.

Notes: *Shallots belong to the same family as onions and garlic. They look like small elongated onions and are milder and sweeter tasting than onions with a slight garlic taste. *Greek yogurt is thicker and creamier than regular yogurt and is better for cooking since it doesn’t curdle when heated.
