Summer Reflections to Reground and Refresh

I

always look forward to summer, don’t you? For me, it represents finding more time to visit family and good friends—the ones I don’t get to see during the other nine months of the year. Barbecues and lazy days of heat (hopefully!). Opportunities to make memories. Children enjoying the water. Fruits and vegetables freshly picked from the garden. And introspection. I look forward to summer because it’s a time for introspection. Maybe this is just me personally, or maybe you can relate. Somehow, when the temperature rises, time seems to slow and our thoughts, to still. Typical worries ease, affecting our actions and choice of activities, allowing us to get back to the basics about what’s important to us— relationships, health, love, laughter, joy, and inner peace. With this comes an increased willingness to explore ideas and new experiences. There’s an openness to our thoughts that’s pushed aside when we are otherwise caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. So, I invite you to read this issue of Health Action with an open mind. In keeping with the idea of introspection, we’ve included articles about water, earth and other electromagnetic energies. What

a perfect time of year to explore your own opinion about the forces that surround us and influence us. We’ve also had the privilege of including the life stories of two women, Kay and Olga, who have 193 years of combined wisdom to teach us. Kay, at 100 years old and as lively as the flower in her hat, is a longtime member of HANS. I have always so appreciated Kay, with her charm and grace. Olga, 93, was recently introduced to HANS and her story of breaking world fitness records at her age is an inspiration for any and all. Also in this issue... The concept of being a criminal is one that initially seems repugnant, but Shawn Buckley makes an important case for being a “health criminal” in the face of legislative challenges that impact our ability to access natural health products, in his article on page 6. Amongst these pages, I hope you will find other thought-provoking articles that inspire you to fill out the membership form on page 15 and support HANS’s non-profit work.

Letters to the Editor I read “To Vaccinate or Not Vaccinate Your Child” in the spring Health Action. I was shocked to hear two people in the health field say there are no alternatives to vaccinations. We decided to use the homeopathic vaccination alternative route to the conventional way and are most satisfied with that approach. Sherry Elser, Vancouver, BC I would like to respond to the informative article, “To Vaccinate or Not Vaccinate Your Child.” I appreciate the writers’ acknowledgement of the challenges parent face when deciding on ways to immunize their children. For that reason, I would like to clarify that there are options and/or alternatives for parents to take. There’s a useful chart on my blog entry April 19th, 2012 at www.accessnaturalhealing.blogspot.com that can help parents curious about homeopathic alternatives. Time to Become a Health Criminal? by Shawn Buckley, LLB

M

ost of us were brought up to be law-abiding citizens. When we hear about crime, our instinct is to hope that the perpetrators are brought to justice. We do not think of ourselves as criminals and we would be horrified to find ourselves in a position where we felt we had to break the law. Sadly, more and more of us are going to find ourselves in the position where we will be compelled to break the law and become health criminals. This will happen for two reasons. First, because we are losing access to products we rely on for our health or, in some cases, for our very lives. Second, the Federal Court has recently made it more difficult to legally access vital medications. Most of us are aware that we are losing access to natural health products because of the Natural Health Products Regulations. For many of us this is not doom and gloom. The store shelves are still full, and most of the time our health practitioners have effective products with which to treat us. However, when all is said and done, we will have lost access to the majority of the natural health products that we had access to before the Regulations. And for some of us, products that are essential to manage very serious health conditions, or that are essential for us to stay alive, are taken away. A widening net The most difficult calls I receive are those by people who depend on a natural product that has been taken away. The story is always the same. They have a serious health condition. They have tried all the approved chemical drugs, which either did not work or the side effects were intolerable. They found a natural remedy that works. They can no longer get the natural remedy because Health Canada does not

approve of it. They are desperate and do not know what to do. The “what to do” when products we need are taken away has become more difficult by a Federal Court decision in Truehope v. Canada. Truehope developed a vitamin-and-mineral supplement to treat bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. Health Canada learned of the supplement because the Alberta government, impressed with initial study results, funded a clinical trial. After shutting down the Alberta government’s clinical trial, Health Canada told Truehope to stop selling because Health Canada had

“For the Canadians who depended on the product, it was a question of life and death.” not approved the product. At the time, roughly 1,000 Canadians were successfully managing serious mental health conditions with the product. Truehope told Health Canada that they could not stop selling or people would die and be hospitalized. Undeterred, Health Canada seized two shipments as they came across the U.S. border. Health Canada then told customs to turn away other shipments. For the thousand Canadians who depended on the product, the “what to do” question was one of life and death. Health Canada completely ignored their letters and calls pleading for access to the product. For anyone wanting to understand the seriousness of the pleas for help, almost 800 pages of notes by Health Canada counsellors were filed in the Alberta Provincial Court. Ordinary people explain how they have become well and beg 6 | Health Action | www.hans.org

for access to the only product that works for them. In some cases, Health Canada is even asked what they are going to do about the person’s suicide if the person runs out of the product. I personally believe for many reasons that there were suicides. The head of the Alberta Branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Ron LaJeunesse, held press conferences blaming Health Canada for suicides of CMHA members who could no longer access EMPowerplus. I saw LaJeunesse testify about going to one of the funerals. Experts like Dr. Charles Popper of Harvard Medical School testified that, if EMPowerplus was taken away, there would be deaths and hospitalizations. Some people who depended on EMPowerplus gave evidence that they were not willing to become mentally ill again and had a suicide plan in place if they ran out. Roughly 300 people disappeared from the Truehope program during the 10 months that Health Canada restricted access. Court action to save lives To ensure that people were not put into danger from Health Canada seizures, Truehope started a Federal Court action challenging Health Canada’s seizure power. Truehope’s argument was that the government cannot seize vital medications, be they chemical or natural, without two things. First, you have to tell the people whose vital medication was seized that you have seized it so that they can take steps to protect their health. Second, there has to be a fast and accessible way to ask for your vital medication back. In effect there has to be an accessible way to argue that your need for the medication is greater than the government’s interest in pursuing full compliance with the law. Truehope led extensive evidence,

including the evidence referred to in this article, to show that there was death and harm caused by the seizures and turning away of the product. Indeed, I invited the Court to find as a fact that Health Canada’s actions led to death. I think that this put the Court in a bind. The evidence of death and harm was overwhelming. If the Court accepted it, one would think it would be difficult to ignore that notice and a quick right to be heard are necessary. One would also think that, logically, Health Canada was acting criminally in causing death while in possession of information that should have made it clear they were putting people in danger. Evidence excluded As it turns out, the Court excluded most of the evidence of death and harm. The Court said that the parties, Truehope and David Hardy, did not have standing to bring this evidence before the Court. “Standing” is simply a legal term to say whether or not a party has the right to “stand” before a court and ask for the relief they want. To have standing the party has to have an interest in the law sufficient to enable them to challenge it in court. In the Truehope case, Truehope ran the Truehope Program, which was the only way to access EMPowerplus. They were responsible for managing people with EMPowerplus. According to the Alberta Provincial Court, it was legally necessary for Truehope to continue to provide EMPowerplus at this time. David Hardy was one of the people who had EMPowerplus seized by

Health Canada. The product was for his family, including two of his children who depended on it to manage serious mental health conditions. Mr. Hardy was also one of the directors of Truehope. After finding that Truehope and Mr. Hardy did not have “standing” to lead most of the evidence of death and harm, the Federal Court excluded the evidence. Once a Court excludes evidence, it is as if the evidence does not exist. With most of the evidence gone, the Court dismissed the case. The Court disagreed that people need to be told when their vital medications are seized. The Court disagreed that there has to be a quick and accessible way to argue for the return of vital medication. Rather, the Court said that it was enough protection that people who have vital medications seized can apply to the Federal Court for their return. Dubious solution I am alarmed with the proposition that we are protected by applying to the Federal Court. Most telling is that of the 1,000 people whose lives were threatened by Health Canada, none started Court action. I expect that several sought legal advice and discovered that Court proceedings tend to be expensive and slow. The Canadian government with unlimited resources aggressively fights such actions, making them expensive and drawn out. For many people who depend on vital medications like EMPowerplus, Court proceedings are simply not a viable o ption. What happened in the 10 months that

Health Canada restricted access to EMPowerplus is that smuggling rings sprang up across Canada. Otherwise law-abiding citizens began smuggling the product for themselves or for family members. In effect, thousands of Canadians became health criminals. In light of the Truehope decision, it would appear that there are going to be more and more health criminals across Canada. As we lose access to more vital natural products, many of us are going to be forced to break the law to maintain our health or the health of those close to us. I wish that it was not coming to this. The Natural Health Products Protection Association that I am a part of is wanting to challenge the current regulations in an effort to stem our loss of vital products. We are, however, going to need manufacturers, distributors, practitioners, and people who depend on products that are now illegal to become parties. In effect we need people with “standing” so that we can try to arrive at a more balanced regulatory environment. If anyone is interested, please email us through our website. And in the meantime, do what you can to protect yourselves and those close to you.1 H

Looking for a New Home? Beware of EMFs Before You Commit by Jim Waugh

S

hould you be considering the purchase or lease of a condominium, townhouse or house, keep in mind there probably will be one or several more smart meters attached to or located within the building. Prior to making a commitment on the property, it is very important that you locate the meter (or meters) so you can assess how the electromagnetic radiation it emits may affect your living environment. Smart meter is the term for a new digital electric meter that will replace existing analogue versions by the end of 2012 in B.C. The new meters will not be read by humans; instead, they will send information about your electrical power usage to BC Hydro without wires, using technology similar to cellphone antennas and Wi-Fi. A lot of folks have health and privacy concerns about these new meters. For more information, see the links here: www.citizensforsafetechnology.org and www.stopsmartmeters.ca. Smart meters are designed to communicate in networks with collector meters and receiving antennas mounted on poles and other structures so their ra-

dio-frequency transmissions will radiate outward 360 degrees for considerable distances. In addition, smart meters emit unhealthy levels of power-frequency magnetic fields. Both of these frequencies easily pass through most building materials, including concrete. In the case of a house, the smart meter may be mounted on a wall common to a room where the family will spend signif-

“Their transmissions radiate outward 360 degrees for considerable distances.” icant time, like a bedroom, family room, living room, dining room and kitchen. Smart meter frequencies will be radiated by the meter and may overlap frequencies from neighbouring meters. People who are sensitive to electromagnetic frequencies may find this radiation quite uncomfortable or even intolerable and react with allergic-like symptoms. Smart meters in townhouse commu-

nities may be mounted on individual units or may be clustered in electrical rooms attached to a wall of a unit. I have seen situations where as few as two meters and as many as 24 smart meters mounted on walls common with bedrooms and other rooms where family members spend time. Condominium installations can vary. In some buildings the meters are clustered in one or more rooms in a basement. The condos above or adjacent will be affected to some degree by the radiation, depending on distance. In other cases, meters for each floor are clustered and mounted in one or more electrical cabinets accessible from the main hallway. The rear of these cabinets (approximately one metre deep) will invariably abut a wall common to a condo unit. In some cases, there may be an identical meter cabinet located on the floor above or below or both. While shielding against electromagnetic frequencies from smart meters is possible, it is not always affordable or cost effective. You should be aware of the potential costs before a purchase or lease agreement is signed.

“While shielding against electromagnetic frequencies from smart meters is possible, it is not always affordable or cost effective.” 8 | Health Action | www.hans.org

Some guidelines for inspecting properties for a future home are: 1. Always locate the smart meter and the meters of neighbouring properties, beside, above or below and determine how the radiation might impact your living space. 2. In the case of strata or co-op developments where smart meters are clustered in electrical rooms or cabinets and situated near a unit you are interested in, never assume the strata council will approve funding to shield your unit from the smart meter radiation. 3. Don’t expect leniency or understanding from BC Hydro or from the government. 4. If you have questions about actual radiation levels or about shielding against radiation, always seek advice of an experienced professional.1 H Jim Waugh is the author and publisher of Living Safely with Electromagnetic Radiation. Feeling Stress in the Bedroom? Check Your Geopathic Zones by Sondi Bruner

I

don’t make a habit of inviting strange men into my bedroom who are cradling oddly shaped toys. And yet, here I am as Vlasty Senovsky, clad in a bright purple shirt, camel vest and bolo tie, slowly treads across my floor with his arms outstretched, following the path of his gold dowsing rods. Just so we’re clear, that’s not a euphemism―he’s actually using dowsing rods. Senovsky (www.geopathic-consulting.com) is an expert at divining geopathic stress zones, and he’s in my bedroom because that’s where we are most affected by the harmful effects of geopathic stress. Never heard of geopathic stress zones? You’re not the only one. More attention has been paid to them across the pond, but here in North America they can be considered the domain of kooky pseudoscience. Geopathic stress zones are magnetic energies emitted from the earth. Senovsky says they are invisible to the naked eye, but they are all around us, slashing our environment vertically, horizontally, even existing in corkscrews and spirals. When we’re exposed to geopathic stress for long

periods of time, they can be detrimental to our health. Senovsky believes that geopathic stress zones are connected to a wide range of health issues―sleep disorders, behavioural issues, asthma, allergies, aches and

“The study showed energy deficits in the lymphatic system, cardiovascular system and pineal gland when exposed to geopathic stress.” pains, even more serious conditions like multiple sclerosis and cancer. While the zones aren’t necessarily the cause of these conditions, they impact your body’s ability to fight disease. “Each and every one of us is born with some kind of weakness,” Senovsky explains. “And that weakness, once you are exposed to a geopathic stress zone,

might be activated. A person might start complaining of a certain condition that wasn’t there before. But maybe it was there before, it was just latent and now it’s coming to the surface.” But if we can’t see geopathic stress zones, how do we know they exist? There is a small body of evidence that suggests they do. For instance, one study conducted by researchers in Austria tested the effects of geopathic zones versus neutral zones in the same room. The study found that test subjects showed energy deficits in the lymphatic system, cardiovascular system and pineal gland when exposed to geopathic stress. For Senovsky, personal experience is all the proof he needs. He was introduced to geopathic zones and dowsing in Czechoslovakia in the mid 1980s and found he had a natural talent for it. He only dowsed recreationally for family and friends until the late 90s, when his wife became extremely ill with no explainable cause. “It was a critical moment, because she was on the brink between life and death for some time.”

“She had to stay in bed for 24 hours a day and that made it even worse,” he says. “She was losing weight, she couldn’t swallow, she couldn’t eat anything.” Senovsky discovered a horizontal geopathic stress zone slicing all the way down his wife’s side of the bed. Up to that point, he hadn’t realized horizontal zones even existed. “I moved the bed to our dining area, where I discovered a weak positive zone, so I thought she would have better chances of survival there,” he says. “Her journey was really long―it took two years before she recovered.” As his wife healed, Senovsky began his geopathic consulting practice, travelling to people’s homes, offices and even hospitals to detect zones and show people how to counteract them. Not all geopathic stress zones are negative, but the positive ones are few and far between. During the day, zones are less active and then they peak between 1:00am and 4:00am, when most of us are sleeping. “During the day, when you are passing through those geopathic stress zones,

they are not dangerous. They just force your immune system to be alert. But if you stay on that geopathic stress zone for more than five minutes, you start to be in trouble,” Senovsky cautions. “And when you stay in the geopathic stress zone for the whole night, it’s a disaster because in the morning you’ll wake up with all the symptoms.” Which brings us to my bedroom. Senovsky maps my bedroom using his dowsing rods, a measuring rod, a geiser meter and a gigahertz meter. What he finds are four separate geopathic zones. On my side of the bed, there is an intersection of horizontal and vertical zones that lands right around my pelvis. At my husband’s pillow, there is another crisscross of zones. (Incidentally, my husband has long suffered from sinus headaches. While I haven’t experienced any fertility issues, I do have stomach problems.) “It’s fun, it’s like detective work,” Senovsky says. “If one person in each family could dowse, the nation would be much healthier.” So with all of these zones in our bedroom, are we doomed? Not so, says

enovsky. He has a variety of tools in his S arsenal that neutralize the zones. Each solution is zone-specific―for example, he’ll use something called cup mark stones to pacify vertical zones, slender wooden dowels to counteract Hartmann zones and power plates (small white squares etched with metal designs) to balance horizontal zones. Senovsky says that geopathic stress zones are not the only factor in illness, but they are a critical component that needs to be addressed. “Unless you do something to the environment first, you’re not going to improve,” he says. “Then everything else that follows can be a successful treatment.”1 H

Energy Water Makes Waves by Sondi Bruner

I

n the world of health, nutrition and wellness, there are few topics more confusing (and controversial) than water. We grapple over what type of water is best to drink, how to filter it, how much to drink, when to drink it and what minerals to add to it. And when you throw the philosophical, energetic dimensions into the mix, the subject becomes even more gnarled and tangled. According to Sherry Strong, a Vancouver-based nutritionist and food philosopher, there is an intuitive, natural reaction that we have to water, regardless of how in tune we are with our bodies. “From a philosophical point of view, there are many things that we get a sense of long before we can actually establish any kind of credible science,” she says. “The earth is this complex ecosystem, and, like the human body, water is like the blood that runs through it. When people taste water from a spring, they notice that it tastes different and it feels different. And they may not have the words to explain it or define it; it’s just a knowing.” Anyone who has examined the more ethereal, energetic properties of water is likely familiar with the work of Masaru

“There is a connection between being dehydrated and chronic disease. ”

is definitely good for us. It’s no accident that our bodies are 75 percent water―and it’s the one nutrient above all others that we need to survive, and thrive. Almost everything on the earth dissolves in water, making it the universal solvent, and it’s intricately involved in practically all of our bodily functions. “There is a connection between being dehydrated and every single chronic disease that we are facing,” says Dr. Elizabeth Wanek, a functional medicine physician in North Carolina. “To treat the disease, we have to primarily support the body being hydrated. And then we have to support the essential elements of the body as an electrical system, and as a battery, and support water primarily to flow.”

“I think Emoto has done two important things,” says Jim McMahon, an ecologist who also owns Sweet Water, a business that sells water purification systems. “One, I think that he demonstrates that the human mind, that thoughts, produce energy. And the second thing is that water can reflect that energy.” Philosophical arguments aside, what most experts can agree on is that water

The new kid on the block— or in the pipe Another unique role of water is its involvement in creating electricity, carrying electrolytes around the body so energy can be generated. “Water is what conducts the electricity, and, specifically in a human being, the flow of water is what’s generating the power on which we run,” explains Dr. Wanek. “We are a hydroelectric plant, and

Emoto, who spent years studying how our words and thoughts can affect the physical properties of water. Emoto conducted experiments where he exposed water to both positive and negative words, then froze the water and took pictures of the resulting crystals. Positive words like love and gratitude produced beautiful, dazzling water crystals, while negative words such as dislike and hopeless created fragmented, broken crystals.

“If you confine water in a straight pipe, there’s going to be friction against the pipe walls, and the water will generate heat and lose energy” 12 | Health Action | www.hans.org

what we’re generating is electricity.” In the natural world, water is constantly flowing―in rivers and streams, over waterfalls, in mountain springs, exchanging energy as it goes. As it moves through substances like rocks and sand, it also undergoes a natural filtration process, picking up certain minerals and losing others. A water system called the vortex water revitalizer is meant to mimic the way water is found in nature. Using a spiral piece of plumbing, the system swirls the water entering your pipes. Proponents of the system claim that this process energizes and revitalizes the water, making it more hydrating and easier for our cells to absorb and assimilate it. “Water itself, given the opportunity like in nature, will always be moving and spiralling in accordance with the universal laws,” says Mikael Lund of World Living Water Systems, who has sold vortex water systems to people in more than 50 countries. “If you expose water to a strict confinement in a straight pipe, then there’s going to be a lot of friction against the pipe walls, and the water will generate heat and then it will lose energy. The vortex water revitalizer is a life-forming energetic process, because it’s following natural flow dynamics.” Lund says vortex water tastes better and is instantly absorbed, improves the quality of skin and hair, encourages plants to grow bigger and stronger, makes appliances last longer due to less rust and

corrosion, and reduces environmental pollution because it produces water that is cleaner. “People have a hard time believing how can water do all that,” he says. “I have a different kind of question. How come water stopped doing all those things?” Dr. Wanek uses a combination of vortex water, fulvic acid and diet to treat her patients and has seen vortex water improve a wide variety of complaints including arthritis, diabetes, body pain, fatigue, weight gain, cravings and insomnia.

“As water moves through substances like rocks and sand, it undergoes a natural filtration process.” “People start to feel better, very simply,” she says. “We give the water for free to people who are willing to come to my office. I had one lady, she took a gallon home and came back the next day and couldn’t believe how much different she felt. She goes, ‘This is amazing, I didn’t believe I could ever feel like this.’ There are people who try it and have an incredible experience just drinking water.” Research continues Is vortex water a way to bring the benefits of a mountain spring in your home?

Jim McMahon says that with the amount of pollution in our waterways, the most important thing about a home water system is removing contaminants so we can drink water that is pure. “By spinning water you are restoring its natural vibrancy, its natural energy, but whether or not revitalized water does anything for my health is unknown to me,” he says. “If water has that energy, does that somehow benefit my cells? I think intuitively, one might surmise that it does.” From an energetic perspective, McMahon points to Emoto’s work as an illustration of how the mind on its own can influence the shape and effects of water. “What I think that Emoto has shown is that if I pour myself a glass of filtered water and I hold it in my hand, that I can modify the frequency of that water with my thoughts,” he says. Sherry Strong says that despite all our scientific advances, we can’t always use research to explain every facet of water and its effect on human health.1 H

The 3Rs: Reflexology, Reiki & Relaxation by Alexis Costello

A Exercise for Every Age by Alexis Costello

T

here was a time when life slowed down for people after retirement, when the most strenuous activity was swinging a golf club. Those days are long gone. These days, seniors are encouraged to stay active and fit. And yet, when it comes to fitness DVDs, those tight and tiny 20-something-year-old bodies demonstrating exercises don’t always accurately reflect the needs of a 60-, 70or 80-year-old fitness enthusiast. An individual embarking on a fitness program in their 60s or 70s has very specific health concerns. Flexibility, maintaining bone health and recovering from injury are key issues. Vreni Gurd and Joan Santopinto are both CHEK (Corrective Holistic Exercise Kinesiology) practitioners who decided to use their experience and expertise to help this specific group of people. “We had a lot of clients who were really inspiring and we wanted to document them,” says Santopinto. Some of these clients are featured in their DVD, demonstrating exercise techniques that apply to individuals into their 90s. “Our main goal is to help people get their function back,” adds Gurd. “Once they lose flexibility their strength goes down and their world gets smaller.”

Santopinto and Gurd want to change the way people think about exercise or hiring a personal trainer. It’s not always about bulking up or getting a perfect beach body. “People don’t really understand what corrective exercise is. It restores alignment and posture, involves specific movements like getting up and down off the floor, means no injuries or pain and generally the ability to do what you want to do.” While the DVD is focused on antiaging, the exercises found within can be helpful for anyone who has lost some of their function. For instance, women in their 20s and 30s who need help restoring core muscles after the stress of pregnancy and childbirth. If they don’t recondition and reset the core muscles properly, they can still suffer from pain or stiffness 20 years later. Hopefully within the DVD or on their website, you can find the keys to feel fantastic. For my part, watching the DVD trailer full of 70- and 80-year-olds in better shape than me has made me want to go take a walk. melie St. Pierre became interested in natural health and healing at a very young age. When her mother was diagnosed with cancer, they began researching alternative treatments, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that she developed a passion to practice. Most of us are familiar with reflexology as a modality to promote health and well-being. By stimulating the appropriate points on the feet, hands or ears, the reflexologist can encourage better circulation to these areas, relieve pain, stimulate nerve flow and enhance the body’s healing capabilities. While reflexology concentrates on the physical health of the body, reiki works on an energetic level. The word reiki comes from the Japanese term for “universal life energy,” and while there are a few different systems and schools of reiki practised, all seem to agree that it creates a sense of peace, serenity and relaxation, clearing away emotional, mental and physical stress. The marriage of reflexology and reiki creates a combination that appeals to St. Pierre and her clients. St. Pierre uses reiki to prepare the body to receive the reflexology treatment, getting the most from a session. “I really believe relaxation is the key to healing,” she says. “The more tense our body is, the more sensitive to attack and disease.” Receiving reiki first puts the client into a deep state of relaxation, then moves into reflexology treatment. Her business Enerflow Alternative Healing officially opened a year ago. “My goal is to really be there for people to achieve well-being in their lives. I am always trying to learn and grow and I want to share that with others.” Amelie St. Pierre, Enerflow Alternative Healing, www.enerflowhealing.com (778) 668-6750

Neurological Integration Comes to the Fraser Valley by Julie Cheng

A

t the age of four, Evan Varley was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. He started on applied behaviour analysis therapy in addition to physical, occupational and speech therapies as part of his treatment. Evan eventually started on the biomedical approach to autism that included a change in his diet. His mom Claudette Varley tried for two years to get him to eat gluten-, dairy- and egg-free. Nothing worked. “My fear was, he’ll end up eating nothing,” she recalls. “I needed something else that would help heal his gut.” Then in 2011, a breakthrough. Varley brought her son to see a Neurological Integration System (NIS) practitioner at Klinik Vancouver (klinikvancouver. com). NIS is completely non-invasive, an important factor especially for her son. Since his NIS treatment, Evan’s constipation, sleep and behavioural issues have largely improved. Varley decided to try NIS for herself. For 10 years, she’d been taking pills for hypothyroidism, fibromyalgia and sleep issues. After NIS, she has been off all her meds. After these positive results, Varley became a qualified NIS practitioner to help others heal. As a registered nurse

with 20 years’ experience, she is used to assessing patients. “I’m still assessing, just in a different way,” she says. “[NIS] gets to more of the root of the problem, and fixing the root cause as opposed to just looking at the symptom.” Three people might come to see her for allergies, she says, but the root cause might be completely different for each. NIS has long been popular in New Zealand, Australia and Germany and is slowly coming to North America. As far as she knows, Varley is the only NIS practitioner in B.C.’s Fraser Valley. One fan is Marjorie Perzow, a former nurse and a member of Health Action Network Society. “Claudette is professional, pays attention to details in her sessions and is passionate about doing this work,” Marjorie wrote. How does NIS work? “NIS is based on the neurophysiology principle that the brain governs optimum function of all body’s systems,” says Varley. From time to time circuits in the body become disconnected. Stressors can be physical, emotional, hormonal, neurological, pathological or structural. To find the disconnect, Varley runs through a set of over 30 protocols. Different protocols determine the presence

of viruses, bacteria, fungus and parasites. There are two new protocols, one for histamine, which helps the body deal with allergens, and virus in bone marrow, which addresses low white blood cell counts. NIS uses principles of kinesiology and the Chinese meridian system. The client sits with an arm stretched out; Varley does a muscle test while contacting specific anatomical contact points, like pulse points that correlate to glands and organs in the body. Once a weakness is determined, Varley taps on the area of the head called the post central gyrus. This “tapping” while still holding the contact points tells the brain to reconnect the neurological circuitry. “Like your fuse has been blown and I’m just reconnecting that fuse.” Kerm Sheenh first visited Varley in June 2011 to relieve her frequent headaches. “After my first treatment, I didn’t have a headache for two weeks,” Kerm recalled. She continued to see Varley for the next few months and noticed a marked reduction in headaches. NIS can be especially helpful with pathogens, hormonal imbalances, mercury toxicity and right/left hemisphere imbalance (presenting as language or speech issues, learning difficulties, ADD/ADHD, autism), says Varley. Today Evan is seven years old and doing well at school. “He has done above and beyond my expectations.” Claudette Varley, New Leaf Wellness, (604) 850-2511 www.newleafwellness.net

The Kidneys: A Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective by Steven K.H. Aung, MD, OMD, PhD, FAAFP, CM

T

raditional Chinese medicine (TCM) considers the energetic organs of the body rather differently than in western medicine. Our two kidneys, for example, are considered in TCM to be one single organ system, out of the 12 energetic organ systems in the body (which include the lung, heart, stomach and spleen). The kidney organ system has its own meridian system, and is associated with the healing colour blue, the element of water, the negative emotion of fear and the positive emotion of willpower. The kidney is also associated with the ears, the sense of hearing, and the control of the bones, teeth, nervous system, hair on the head, hair on the reproductive organs, neurological tissue and the brain. It is very important to strengthen the kidney, as its main functions are to regulate reproduction, to mediate the genetic expression of a person’s essence (the energy that unifies “nature” and “nurture”) and to store the congenital (present at birth) and acquired vital energy of the body known as qi. Spiritually, the kidney controls important aspects of both the inner and outer consciousness of a person. The zang and fu pairing In TCM, all the organ systems are paired according to their zang (solid) or fu (hollow) characteristics. The kidney, which is a zang organ, is paired with the bladder, which is a fu organ. These two organ systems network as yin and yang with one another.

The bladder not only stores and excretes urine, but it also complements the kidney, by regulating the exchange of energy between the inside and outside, and the outside and inside of the body to the organ systems. In this way, the kidney and bladder can balance the body’s inner and outer spirits and promote the mental health and stability of a person, such as willpower.

“The kidney controls important aspects of both the inner and outer consciousness of a person. ” When a person becomes unwell, the functions of the kidney and the bladder become disordered and quality of life diminishes. The disorder usually affects the kidney in acute conditions, whereas it affects the bladder in chronic ones. Therefore, by observing which organ systems are involved, you can assess the status of the condition. The kidney’s meridian system Each of the 12 organ systems has its own meridian system that is made up of one left and one right meridian. Along the meridians, many acupoints can be employed to various functions, such as toni-

fication, sedation, or altering the flow of qi throughout the body. The kidney meridian has 27 acupoints, starting at the bottom of the foot, running up the medial (middle) side of the ankle to the knee, up the medial thigh, then to the anterior (front) pubic bone, and then up to the front of the chest to terminate beneath the inner side of the clavicle (collarbone). All these acupoints have their specific actions. For instance acupoint KI.1, on the bottom of the foot, absorbs the earth energy into the body. KI.6, located on the inside of the ankle, controls human essence and is used to treat infertility or stabilize the person’s genetic factors. KI.10, on the knee, is essential for improving and building up kidney energy. KI.27, at the bottom of the clavicle, can be used to treat the lymphatic system throughout the whole body. Are you a kidney personality? The kidney reflects the colour blue and so blue colours energize and revitalize kidney qi. Furthermore, the kidney is associated with the element of water, according to the Five Elements Theory. It is possible to ascertain whether individuals have a water personality by examining their hands, face or nature. According to hand diagnosis, if their fingers are shorter than their palm, thenar muscles (found at the base of the thumb) are not well developed, and the palm is concave

“The kidney is positively associated with willpower when you are healthy and negatively associated with fear when you are disordered.” 18 | Health Action | www.hans.org

with many lines inscribed upon its surface, they are said to have a water personality, or a water-kidney personality. This indicates a person who is sensitive, flexible, fond of water and a great thinker. Signs of kidney problems If the kidney is out of balance, we will feel pain and burning sensations in the soles of the feet. In western terms, this is known as plantar fasciitis or calcaneal spurs. Emotionally, the kidney is positively associated with willpower when you are healthy and negatively associated with fear when you are disordered. Thus, when the kidney is weak, we feel fearful, but when the kidney is healthy, we have willpower. In addition, the kidney plays very important roles in a person’s anatomical development and intellectual consciousness. In children, fear can hinder physical and psychological development, which is manifest in physiological problems such as stunted growth patterns, diseases of the teeth, and slow physical and mental development. There are several pathological outcomes to kidney disorders. When a person has kidney problems, they will often complain about pain in the kidney, bone and the urinary tract. Symptoms include changes in the frequency, urgency and dysuria (pain or difficulty) of urination, as well as feeling emotionally fearful. When the kidney is weak, it is difficult to deposit calcium in the bone, and may cause osteopenia (reduced bone mass), and even osteoporosis, in serious cases. Menopausal hot flashes can be also associated with kidney qi deficiency. Since the kidney is a water organ, it functions to cool the heat of the body, and when the kidney is deficient, the liver organ system, which is associated with wood, dries up. The excess heat in the body ignites the wood of the liver and thus can cause hot flashes. Since the kidney controls the bones, any disorder involving the bones, such as broken bones or trauma to the bone, can make the kidney disordered. In TCM, it is insufficient to treat osteoporosis solely with vitamin D and calcium. It is vitally important to treat the kidney to make the bones stronger.

Diagnosis To diagnose kidney disorders, it is important to do examinations on the scalp, the ears, the chin and the kidney meridians. Greying hair and hair loss are associated with a yang deficiency of the kidney. Therefore, implantation of hair is only a superficial treatment for balding, and it is not enough. It is important to strengthen the kidney energy so that the hair will grow again. On the face, it is possible to observe the health of the kidney by observing the chin; when the chin is small, the kidney is weak, and vice versa. Dimples on the chin are associated with kidney essence deficiency, and can be seen in youngest siblings and persons of low birth weight or with congenital defects. Redness of the

“It is insufficient to treat osteoporosis solely with vitamin D and calcium. ” chin indicates increased heat in the kidney; unhealthy teeth, middle ear infection and deformities of the outer ears all indicate kidney disorder. Other kidney symptoms include ringing of the ears (tinnitus) and hearing loss. These symptoms are all associated with kidney; for example, in babies, teething is frequently accompanied by ear problems, which is associated with kidney energy disturbance. Therapeutic approaches From a nutritional point of view, in order to strengthen the kidney, all ages should eat dark-coloured foods such as blueberries, blackberries and black fungus. As for herbal medicine, a specific herb called GeJe Kidney Nourishing is appropriate for kidney yin conditions such as tinnitus, urinary infection and warm limbs. For kidney yang conditions such as fatigue, urinary incontinence and cold, sweating limbs, the herb Lau Wei Di Huang balances the flow of kidney energy. Acupuncture can help to readjust physiological imbalances in the internal 19 | Health Action | www.hans.org

organs and the meridian systems. Manipulative therapy on the kidney meridians and acupoints is also very helpful. Exercise plays an important role in strengthening the kidney, since its meridian begins on the bottom of the foot. Every time you walk, climb or jump, the kidney is stimulated. Kidney stimulation is particularly important for growth, and healthy gene expression in infants and children. Touching or pressing the bottom of babies’ feet strengthens their kidney energy to grow healthy and strong. For adults, walking on the beach, on uneven stones or in shallow water always stimulates the kidney and has beneficial effects. Tai Chi Chu-an and stretching exercises like yoga and Qi Gong are useful to strengthen the kidney and energize its corresponding bladder meridians. Lie on the beach with your back on the sand, so that the bladder meridian is in contact with the earth, look up at the blue sky, listen to the waves, flex your knees and put the soles of your feet at a 90-degree angle. Holding this position will strengthen the kidney. Finally, phonation sounds such as Woooo directly stimulate the kidney, while sounds such as wOOOO support the kidney by stimulating the bladder. The greatest benefit to the kidney can be obtained through phonation by sounding Woooo for 5 or 10 minutes, followed by sounding wOOOO for 5 or 10 minutes. The kidney in TCM is not only an organ system, it also makes an energetic and spiritual contribution to the body.1 H

Kay’s Keys to 100 Years of Health by Julie Cheng

hen Kay Charter saw her doctor just before her 100th birthday, she thanked him for keeping her healthy all these years. The doctor said, “I don’t know what I’ve done to keep you healthy.” This feisty patient has filled only one out of the half dozen prescriptions he’s ever given her over the past three decades. “I haven’t taken medication for 30 years now,” says Charter. Though she has overcome serious health issues, like colon cancer and a broken hip, today Charter is a picture of health with a strong heart and good blood pressure—all thanks to what she calls clean living. Charter was born in England in January 1912. Shortly after her birth, her father sailed across the Atlantic―just after the historic sinking of the Titanic. The rest of the family followed a year later and settled on an Alberta homestead. Today Charter lives in BC and has been a member of Health Action Network Society for more than 30 years. Says

HANS staff Michelle Hancock, “She is amazingly fit and spry for her age.” What are Charter’s keys to lifelong health? “I was born at exactly the right time to be healthy,” says Charter. “I was also blessed with a healthy body and a good immune system.” During the flu epidemic of 1918, she was the only family member who didn’t get sick.

“At age 95, she bought an exercise bike and uses it every day.” “Living on a farm was the perfect life for a young person,” she explains. “You were doing things outside, there was no such thing as junk food … food was produced on your own land.” Growing up, “we were out kicking something around or jumping and hop scotching … going to school I walked a

mile and a half or rode horseback, so I got my exercise.” This remarkable woman still keeps physically active. At age 95, she bought an exercise bike and uses it every day. Charter’s interest in healthy living started in the 1940s around the time her son Dennis was born. Her doctor then was Dr. E. E. She eats three good meals a day, takes supplements, does not drink, smoke or eat junk food or meat. She especially appreciates the nutritious, delicious meals that her daughter Laraine and son-in-law Barry make for her, also noting how much they help her carry on with her healthy, happy life. While she loves food, Charter keeps her weight down―another factor that benefits her health. Charter has kept her mind sharp and her heart happy by working hard, being

active in her community and staying in touch with friends. She started work at age 15 earning $800 per year, she’s been “president of this, secretary of that,” and, in the 1960s, served for one year on city council in Vernon, B.C., where she owned a successful business. “I used to write an awful lot of letters to the papers and the politicians. That keeps you thinking.” Nowadays she enjoys connecting to friends the modern way. “I get so many people saying they like getting my emails. That’s a real pleasure. I guess I’ve always been a people person.” A member of the Mormon church for 40 years, Charter’s faith also keeps her going strong, as does a positive attitude. “Attitude has so much to do with people’s health. If you’re positive and happy about things, I credit that, too.” Travel also “stretches your mind and your heart.” Since taking a cruise to Hawaii in 1935 that cost $110 while making $75 per month, she’s travelled the world. The state of today’s health care system concerns Charter. Those who want to stay healthy, she says, must pay out of their own pocket, for supplements, nutritious foods and alternative health modalities―plus pay taxes―while “others can let themselves go and be sick and get all these drugs.” She points to the half dozen prescriptions—the 80 percent―she’s never filled. What a difference it would make in the health system, she says, to save that money and spend it in better ways. H

Breaking Records at 93 Olga Kotelko—An Athletic Wonder by Roxanne Davies

T

o say that Olga Kotelko is aging gracefully is a little like saying Wayne Gretzky was pretty good with a puck. At 93 years of age, while most of her contemporaries are waiting for the inevitable end, this amazing track and field athlete continues to outrun, outjump and outthrow other female athletes in her age class. The track and field star owns 23 world records and has won more than 650 medals. She recently returned from the 2012 World Masters Indoor Competition in Jyvaeskylae, Finland, with a cache of 12 gold medals. It may be true that she smashed world records in meets where there are few competitors in her age category, such as high jump and long jump, but the truth is that she broke world records and at her age is still improving on her past performances. In 2009 she was inducted into the Canadian Master Athletes Hall of Fame, received a YWCA Woman of Distinction award and was named Master Athlete of the Year 2010 from Sport B.C. At the Masters Competition in Finland in 2010 she threw the javelin more than 15 feet farther than her nearest age-group rival. More than 600 gold medals later, Kotelko shows no signs of slowing down. At age 93, she holds world records in 200 metres, 400 metres, high jump, long jump, triple jump, discus throw, shot put, javelin throw, hammer throw, weight throw, weight pentathlon and 4 x 100-metre relay. “I’m not old. I don’t know what old is,” Kotelko said. “There are many older adults, over 50, 60 and even older, who are becoming serious athletes and they

are competing in local, national and international competitions and doing very well. They are experiencing a level of fitness that can fight debilitating aging and this is the secret to staying young and healthy. When you feel fit, you are flexible, which is a natural feeling. Your body is balanced, and coordinated with strong bones and muscles. What a great lifestyle I started!” Like a fine wine, she insists she’s getting better with age. She strives to run faster, jump higher and throw farther with each successive year and she doesn’t plan to ever stop competing.

“Self-discipline is crucial to my success and is of the utmost importance for control, determination and perseverance. No cheating!” “I first met Olga in 1998 when she had just begun her track-and-field career at age 79,” recalls her track-and-field coach Barb Vida. “The spirit of the true athlete does not simply show in competition but in practice as well. Olga has embraced athletics as a second career. She maintains a positive disposition that makes it extremely easy for coaches to work with her. She is extremely dedicated, persevering through a constant

program of exercise, which includes general and functional weight training, cardio training in addition to her track-and-field technical training. “Now at the age of 93, her athletic achievements continue to impress me and many others. In the words of Olga’s first coach Bob Robinson, who trained the Olympic sprinter Harry Jerome, ‘This super-senior has achieved more in the realm of senior female track-and-field athletics than any other Canadian and, indeed, more than any athlete in her age in the whole world.’ ” Vida believes that Kotelko’s message to seniors is that life can be beautiful no matter what your age. “Listen to your body and get moving. Ageing may be affected by our genes but our real biological age depends largely on our daily habits, stress level and mental and physical exercise. The connection of body, mind and s pirit.” The seventh of 11 children growing up on a farm outside of Saskatoon, Kotelko’s road to world-class athletic competition has been a long one. Like many farm children, Kotelko and her siblings worked hard to help put food on the table. “Before going to school there were 15 cows to milk by hand, separating the milk from the cream, washing dishes for 15 people. During harvest time my brothers and sisters would help father bring in the grain. “We attended a typical one-room schoolhouse. It was a two-mile walk in the morning and we would rush to finish our chores so that we could get to school and play before classes started. Our favourite game was softball, if we had a bat, if we could find a ball.”

“I first met Olga in 1998 when she had just begun her track-and-field career at age 79.” 22 | Health Action | www.hans.org

Her life before athletics was very full: working as a school teacher for 34 years, raising her two girls on her own as a single parent and working summers in the office of the Royal City Cannery didn’t leave much time to herself. After retirement she left New Westminster and moved to West Vancouver to live with her daughter and her family. They encouraged her to stay active and so she decided to try slo-pitch, indulging in her childhood passion. Olga took up track and field because throwing and running were very similar to the skills necessary for softball. One of her first meets was in Tucson, Arizona, where she won her first international gold medal, and she was hooked. Medical researchers took notice of the dynamic nonagenarian and invited her to take part in studies to understand whether it was her genes or her training that made her athletic success so remarkable. At McGill University researchers put her through a gruelling series of tests to test lung and heart function. The most precious test they would perform on her was a muscle biopsy, a decent gauge of

general good health. Her aerobic capacity was good but it was her muscle fibres that amazed the scientists. A biopsy of three pieces of leg muscle were analyzed and a technician declared, “This is the healthiest muscle I have seen in my life.” These exceptional muscle fibres have allowed her to excel in power sports. Now Kotelko is writing a memoir and sharing her personal story, her exercise plan, her diet and recipes and her secrets for staying healthy in body, mind and spirit. She demonstrates her stretching exercises, massage, reflexology, yoga and the use of stress balls. Her unique approach to exercise and diet and, yes, even insomnia, will help and inspire people to stay healthy, no matter what their age. She proves that we can hope to be reasonably independent and alert well into our 90s. Her motto: No matter who you are, no matter where you are, just start now! As Canada prepares for a “grey tsunami,” baby boomers will face a gradual and progressive loss of physical and mental abilities. Medical resources will be stretched to the max. So far we have treated exercise as a luxury rather than a

Kotelko demonstrates that an active person can remain healthy and avoid a long bout of ill health in the last years of life. “This is what we all should experience. I am referring mainly to athletes, because this is the world I know. My wish is to offer a glint of hope on how we can ward off the gradual loss of physical capabilities. Whether we are talking about the ability to think, run, jump and throw things, I believe we can extend our physical integrity to the end. Can we actually hope to die of nothing?” H

Time-Tested Zinc for Your Skin by Karen V. Bowers

Z

inc has a long history of medicinal use and is a mineral essential for good health. It promotes immune function to fight illness, supports healthy cell growth and development, is vital for DNA repair and plays a role in hundreds of body processes, especially those affecting the skin. The first zinc remedy was mentioned in Egyptian papyri in 2000 BC. Zinc was used extensively throughout the Roman Empire, and its use continues today in household items like calamine lotion and diaper rash creams. Whether it’s taken as a supplement or applied topically, medical research is understanding that zinc plays a major role in helping blemishes heal faster, reducing inflammation caused by rashes, defending against a sunburn and, when taken orally, regulating the skin’s oil-gland activity caused by changing hormones. It is used for acne, eczema, psoriasis, dandruff, athlete’s foot, burns, boils and infections. Conversely, did you know that extremely low levels of zinc will lead to severe dermatitis and ulcers? How’s your zinc supply? Skin is in a continual state of renewal and this places a high demand on zinc; specifically, 2.5 grams per day is what we need for normal health and development, and the epidermis requires more zinc than any other part of the body. We can eas-

ily attain zinc from a diet that includes meat, oysters, turnips, peas, oats, peanuts, almonds, whole wheat grain, pumpkin seeds, ginger root and pecan nuts. Zinc deficiency is, in fact, quite widespread throughout the world and can result in poor appetite, growth failure, mental lethargy, delayed wound healing and immune disorders. Within the last two decades research has been focusing on the scientific basis

“The skin’s epidermis requires more zinc than any other part of the body. ” for the use and benefits of zinc. What is emerging is the importance of zinc’s enzyme activity, which promotes the synthesis of protein into collagen―a critical process that’s needed for healing. Studies have shown that specific amino acids bind to a zinc ion and form a finger-like shape. This shape, termed a “zinc finger,” allows zinc ions to interact with DNA and rejuvenate DNA/RNA by promoting the repair of damaged DNA strands. Is it possible that the white paste we have been slathering onto rashes has been doing more than give comfort? Several scientists support this theory and studies continue.

Factoring in zinc fingers Zinc finger ions are the focus of discovery for therapeutic purposes to treat diseases such as cancer, hepatitis and viruses such as herpes. Zinc finger ions have a direct role in scavenging free radicals, and research has shown that they reduce the cellular and genetic damage caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. Zinc particles are currently being used in a multitude of sun preparations to reflect UV light. To this point all of the discussion has been about defending against UVB and UVA radiation, which are recognized as causing skin cancer. UVA rays are most dangerous as they cause the same cellular damage all year long; to DNA this represents the same damaging effects in December as in July. Zinc ions are opening up dialogue about the ability of repair at the cellular level and, for the first time, studies are suggesting that true DNA protection may be capable of happening daily for year-round defence.1 H

Can Sugar Speed Up Aging? by Mandana Edalati, ND

A

ging is a complex process that affects every organ, cell, molecule and body function. Consuming lots of sugar will most definitely accelerate this process. When sugar gets into your circulation, it goes through a process called glycation in which the sugar binds to proteins, creating molecules called advanced glycation end products, also known as AGEs―a fitting acronym for the topic at hand. AGEs cause damage to different proteins throughout the body. Approximately one third of the body’s protein is collagen, which is found in areas such as muscles, bones, blood vessels, ligaments and the skin. Your skin also contains another protein fibre called elastin, making the skin the perfect target for the AGEs. Elastin and collagen are the building blocks that keep your skin firm, smooth and help maintain its elasticity. When these protein fibers are damaged and their structures are weakened, the skin starts to lose its resiliency and begins to sag and form wrinkles. To add to the insult, AGEs also turn off some of your body’s antioxidant enzymes, further reducing your protective mechanisms against aging. The negative effects of AGEs are pronounced in individuals with delayed diagnosis of diabetes or poorly controlled diabetes. Chronic high blood sugar levels in diabetics lead to the accumulation of AGEs, which in turn not only reflect as premature signs of aging as the skin’s elasticity becomes compromised but can also damage the blood vessels of the heart, eyes, kidneys and the extremities. The blood test HbA1c (hemoglobin A1c) is used to measure the amount of glycation on red blood cells. The higher the HbA1c levels, the higher the glycation and the more accelerated the process of aging and damage to the body. The good news is that there are steps that can be taken to minimize AGE formation. One way to do this is to reduce your intake of sugar since a rise in blood sugar levels is one of the main driving

forces behind glycation. According to a 2011 Statistics Canada report, Canadians consume an average of 26 teaspoons of sugar a day, equal to about 88 pounds per year. About 35 percent of this intake comes from added sugar. Avoid adding sugar to your food and drinks. If you are used to adding sugar to your tea, next time try adding a dash of cinnamon instead. It gives tea a mild, sweet flavour and has the added benefit of supporting healthy blood sugar levels.

“Canadians consume an average of 26 teaspoons of sugar a day.” Always read labels for hidden sources of sugar. Many store-bought sauces, salad dressings, dried fruit, canned foods and breads contain added sugar. Other high-sugar ingredients to avoid include corn syrup, malt, molasses, fructose, turbinado, dextrose, glucose and fruit juice c oncentrate. Eliminate poor quality carbohydrates such as white bread and pasta. These products quickly turn into sugar and spike

25 | Health Action | www.hans.org

up blood sugar levels. Also avoid “sugar-free” products as most are made with artificial sweeteners that, among other side-effects, can trigger sugar cravings. Another way to reduce glycation effects is to consume more antioxidants. Antioxidants help to neutralize free radicals that damage your skin. Many antioxidants inhibit AGE formation. Blueberries, blackberries and tomatoes are excellent sources. Drinking green or white tea on a regular basis as well as supplementing with vitamins C and E also helps enhance your antioxidant levels. More sugar does in fact amount to more wrinkles. But the skin is just an external indicator of internal health, and eating sugar will actively age you inside and out. Making a conscious effort to reduce your intake of sugar and increasing your antioxidant intake will have a great impact not only on your skin but also on disease prevention and overall health.1 H Dr. Edalati practises in North Vancouver and is the founder of Wellness Naturopathic Centre, focusing on allergies, anti-aging, infertility, women’s health, hormonal imbalances, pediatrics, gastrointestinal disorders and weight management. www.wellnessnaturopathic.com (604) 987-4660

Slowing the Reproductive Clock Fertile hope for women 35+ by Lorne Brown, BSc, CA, Dr.TCM, FABORM

T

here’s been a lot in the news lately about how female fertility declines dramatically after women turn 35. Of course age matters, and if you’re in your 20s or early 30s and wondering if now’s the time to expand your family, don’t wait. But what if you’re one of the millions of women in your late 30s or 40s who discovered love late or only now decided to add to your family? If you’re trying to conceive, then hearing physicians and the media say things like “advanced maternal age,” “low ovarian reserve,” “high FSH,” and “poor IVF responder” is sure to strike fear into your heart. Until now western reproductive medicine has insisted that a woman is born with a fixed number of eggs and that the sharp decline in the quality and quantity of eggs after age 35 is irreversible. However, new studies challenge the absoluteness of this view. A recent study from Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto on coenzyme-Q10 (Co-Q10) and egg quality suggests that, in fact, it may be possible to improve egg quality and slow down or even reverse the aging process.

In the study, scientists found that by injecting old, retired breeder mice with the antioxidant Co-Q10, they were able to stimulate more eggs to develop, and the genetic quality of these eggs—their youthfulness—resembled those of mice eggs in their reproductive prime. The offspring of these older mice, who were the equivalent of a 50-year human, were as healthy as those from younger mothers. It appeared that the Co-Q10 was actually able to rejuvenate the mitochondria (the cell’s power source) and repair damage to the DNA. Another study, published by Dr. Jon Tilley in Nature Medicine, shows that stem cells found in human ovaries are capable of generating new eggs—suggesting that under the right conditions, women can keep producing new eggs indefinitely. Thus, it appears that the state of women’s eggs may be less predetermined than previously thought. And this gives hope that there are things that you can do to preserve and improve your fertility. Chronological versus biological age Our chronological age is fixed,

d erived from how many birthdays we have, but our biological age can be accelerated or slowed down depending on lifestyle and environmental factors. Studies of the Okinawans of Japan, who have the longest life expectancy as well as the longest health expectancy of any people in the world, show that diet, exercise, stress and lifestyle can have a very significant impact on your health and longevity. And it appears that accelerated aging in human eggs may also be affected by external factors as well. For example, it has been shown that women who smoke go into menopause on average two years earlier than women who don’t. A study published in Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology on biological versus chronological ovarian age shows that both environmental and genetic factors contribute to egg quantity and quality and that biological age is more important than chronological age in predicting the outcome of in vitro fertilization. Accelerated aging Our current lifestyle in the West, characterized by chronic stress, lack of

Reach your fertility potential 1. Eat a whole food diet Whole foods are foods that are in the state that Mother Nature made them (the apple instead of apple juice), minimally processed and refined as little as possible before being eaten. Slow carbs: Eating carbs in their natural unprocessed state causes a slower and lower rise in blood sugar. Slow carbs include beans, peas, lentils, whole grains, vegetables and most fruits. Eating slow carbs helps to minimize insulin resistance, regulate blood sugar, balance hormones and prevent gestational diabetes. Plant-based foods: These include a rainbow of high-fibre fruits and vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains. These foods are loaded with antioxidants and phytonutrients that fight inflammation (a common cause of infertility) and nourish your reproductive system. Healthy fats: Eat fats that are pressed naturally from whole-plant foods (coconuts, nuts, seeds, avocado, olives) or are short-lived, deep sea fish such as salmon, herring and mackerel. Healthy fats combat cellular inflammation and improve hormonal sensitivity. 2. Maintain a healthy weight Strive for a body mass index (BMI) of between 20 and 25 and a waist circumference of less than 35 inches (89 cm) for women and less than 40 inches (102 cm) for men. Losing just 10 pounds (4.5 kg), if you are overweight, can greatly enhance your chances of pregnancy. 3. Exercise regularly Exercise burns calories and helps regulate your insulin levels, reversing some of the metabolic imbalances that

c ontribute to weight gain and fertility problems. And when you exercise, your body rewards you by releasing a cascade of feel-good hormones (endorphins). These endorphins are Mother Nature’s antidepressants, lowering your stress and boosting your sense of well-being. You can get the positive effects of exercise by vigorous walking or running 30 to 40 minutes every day. Amplify the effects of your workout by incorporating more activity into your daily routine: park your car a few blocks from your destination, take stairs instead of an elevator, hike, bike, swim or join a dance class. 4. Manage stress Chronic stress shuts down all nonessential systems and directly affects the

“Healthy fats combat cellular inflammation and improve hormonal sensitivity.” hypothalamic-pituitary-ovary axis (HPO) that regulates fertility hormones. As well, stress diverts the blood supply away from the ovaries and interferes with your body’s ability to respond to even balanced hormones. Self-care, meditating and mind-body programs can help reduce distress and promote deep relaxation. Connecting to what’s important to you and expressing gratitude all help to counter stress and promote well-being. This allows your body to relax and naturally rebalance your reproductive hormones. 5. Nurture your social network Humans are social beings, and studies have shown that having a supportive community of family and friends is the most important determinant of mental and physical health. This is particularly important for women who are distressed. Studies have described a “tend and befriend” response to stress in women where women seem to deal with stressful situations by bonding and nurturing each other. 6. Consider natural approaches Fertility acupuncture: Studies 27 | Health Action | www.hans.org

show that acupuncture can improve blood flow to the reproductive organs, balance hormones, optimize implantation and reduce miscarriage rate. Frequency of acupuncture (such as three times per week) appears to improve effectiveness. Custom Chinese herbal formulas: Chinese herbal therapy corrects underlying deficiencies, balances hormones and regulates the menstrual cycle. Fertility/ anti-aging supplements Women: • Prenatal multivitamin/mineral • Folic acid 1 mg/day • Co-Q10 100 mg/day • Greens: wheat grass 2 shots/day, or spirulina 3000 mg/day • Omega-3 2000 mg/day • Vitamin D 1000 IU/day

sleep, a high-fat, fast-food diet and overconsumption of stimulants, accelerates the aging process. These factors leave us prone to diseases such as cancer and diabetes and hasten the ticking of the reproductive clock: • Processed food diet • Elevated stress/cortisol levels • High inflammation levels • Lack of exercise • Poor sleep • Social isolation and lack of support network • Environmental toxins

Men: • Iron-free multivitamin/mineral • Antioxidants • Omega-3 2000 mg/day • Vitamin D 1000 IU/day • Zinc 30 mg/day (a handful of pumpkin seeds) • Co-Q10 60 mg/day • Selenium 250 mcg/day (2–3 Brazil nuts)

O

A final few words on the marvels of medical technology: we are fortunate to live in an age where reproductive technology exists. Even with proper diet, exercise and rest, some couples will require the use of donor sperm, donor eggs and in vitro fertilization. But by living in a way that promotes peak fertility―at any age—you will optimize egg quality, as well as improve the uterine environment for implantation and gestation of a healthy baby. If you are 35-plus and want a child, you can make changes to your lifestyle that slow down the aging process and help you restore your fertility potential.1 H
