Monday 1 Memories of Manchester

New MRI Atrium 10am-4pm/Drop in Allow volunteers from the Manchester Museum to take you on a trip down memory lane as they showcase objects from Manchester’s history.

Explore and Tour

New MRI Atrium 12 Midday Lime Arts is a team of artists working in the hospitals in Manchester for the past 36 years. Come and meet the team and explore the public artworks within the hospital through a series of tours that will take place throughout the day.

Wildlife in your Backyard

Eye Hospital Atrium 10am-1pm/Drop in Using the insect collection at Manchester Museum, our Curator of Entomology will offer advice on how to increase the diversity of insects in your garden. Artist Lucy Burscough will respond to these themes with a practical workshop – please feel free to join in.

Precious Objects

Eye Hospital Atrium 10am-1pm/Drop in Join Manchester Art Gallery’s Senior Conservator Claire Grundy in exploring some of the most interesting and precious objects in the gallery’s collection and find out more about the fascinating work of a Conservator.

Singalong

Eye Hospital Atrium 2-2.30pm/Drop in A fun, informal drop in session led from the atrium piano by Holly Marland, Music for Health Lead at LIME. From familiar songs to improvised ditties, this session will appeal to everyone, whether you feel like joining in with the singing, having a bop or listening!

Tactile Discovery

Eye Hospital Atrium 1-4pm/Drop in Manchester Museum has fantastically diverse collections including archaeology, zoology and botany. Join us for a extraordinary opportunity to touch real collection objects and get closer to history and the natural world.

RMCH Atrium 10am-4pm/Drop in The Children’s Hospital atrium will be home to an evolving artwork over the course of +Culture Shots week. Installation artist, Stella Corrall, will be working with her flexible plastic medium to create an organic artwork based on weaving, knotting and tying.

Radical Knitting

New MRI Atrium 10-4pm/Drop in Discover and have a go at Artist Sarah Marsh’s radical approach to knitting and learn more about the Gallery of Costume and Manchester Art Gallery’s recent Health and Wellbeing community project ‘We Sit, We Knit, We Unwind’.

Tuesday 2 Living Worlds

New MRI Atrium 10am-4pm/Drop in Volunteers from Manchester Museum will introduce you to our Living Worlds collection.

Royal Exchange Theatre

New MRI Atrium 10am-1pm/Drop in Come and join members of the Royal Exchange Theatre’s Young Company and adults from the Booth Centre progression group for an informal and relaxed morning of drama games.

Mobile Haptics

Eye Hospital Atrium 10am-1pm/Drop in Haptic technology is a touch enabled computer system which works by using high quality 3D scans of museum objects, allowing the user to investigate and examine the form of artefacts, which would otherwise be too fragile, small, heavy to handle, through a touch sensitive stylus.

Tall Tales for Tall Men Who Fall Well Short

Eye Hospital Atrium 11am Plentiful evidence survives from Ancient Egypt for the practice of healing and other means to promote health and well-being. This session draws on the rich Egyptology holdings of the Manchester Museum to describe ancient Egyptian approaches to disease and misfortune.

Eye Hospital Atrium 1-4pm/Drop in Tony Curry performer poet, qualified community youth and community worker. In 2012, he launched Manchester Men’s Health, an organization that seeks to improve the health and wellbeing of men. Come and find out more! Be sure to catch Tony’s performances at 2pm and 3pm.

Memories Matter

Saint Mary’s Atrium 1-4pm/Drop in Have you ever wondered how we care for collections at the Manchester Museum? How we investigate objects and figure out how to treat them? Come and talk to members of the Manchester Museum conservation team and get up close and personal with some fascinating objects.

Afrique Performs

Saint Mary’s Atrium 10am-1pm/Drop in Meet international performer and poet Chanje Kunda, who uses expression, creativity and diversity to transform lives. Be sure to catch Chanje’s performances at 11am and 12pm.

Saint Mary’s Atrium 1-4pm/Drop in Get hands on with history! Discover Salford’s fascinating social history collection of objects and find out about how to stimulate memories with treasured items and photographs.

Musical Interplay

Saint Mary’s Atrium 2-2.30pm/Drop in Come and try out some easy to play percussion instruments accompanied by the soothing sounds of the Kora played by Holly Marland, Music for Health Lead at LIME. Everyone can be part of music whether listening or playing and this workshop should stimulate ideas about using music in healthcare settings.

Culture Tots

RMCH For Outpatients only 10am-12pm/Drop in Baby Explorers (Manchester Museum) and Toddlertastic (Whitworth Art Gallery) come together at Manchester Children’s Hospital. Outpatients and staff are welcome to join in these creative, sensory, discovery and play sessions for babies, toddlers, under 5s and their grown ups.

Caring for People with Dementia: Art Based Approach Kanaris Lecture Theatre, Manchester Museum Atrium 10am-3.30pm Booking Essential FREE light lunch and refreshments provided International guest Pamela Aldridge from Alzheimers South Australia will deliver a workshop which will focus on understanding the person with dementia, behaviours of concern and how the Montessori Techniques have enhanced the lives of those affected.

Ancient Medicine Eye Hospital Atrium 1-4pm/Drop in Curator of Archaeology at Manchester Museum, will introduce ancient medicine, show Roman medical instruments and votive objects from the collection.

Learn of the great British Art collector from the regency period who had artists like JMW Turner paint at this country retreat. Meet the staff and discover the legacy of the Leicester family.

Montessori Techniques

Eye Hospital Atrium 2pm Sura’s family have been custodians of Mandinka stories and songs over centuries, passing down the art of the Kora (West African harp) from father to son. One of the most exciting young West African musicians in the UK, Sura will take us on a journey through time from the past to the present, with hope for the future!

North West Arts and Health Networking Event Exploring Memory Loss and Imagination

Eye Hospital Atrium 10am-4pm Alzheimers South Australia are pioneering Montessori based activities for people with dementia to great effects. A chance to meet the experts and discuss the benefits of this approach.

Eye Hospital Atrium 6-8.30pm The North West Arts and Health Network is a free and informal network of people and organisations that are interested in the relationship between creative, culture the arts and wellbeing. It is part of the National Alliance for Arts, Health and Wellbeing which is chaired by Clive Parkinson.

The Gallery of Costume, Platt Hall, is part of Manchester City Galleries and is host to a first class, international Costume collection.

Shoeboxes and Speeches Saint Mary’s Hospital Atrium 10am-4pm How might things look in the future? Artists from the Pankhurst Centre in Manchester have been working in partnership with the Royal Exchange Theatre to explore the possibilities. The result (which include a talking chair, worlds in a box and creative activities) are currently on display in the Theatre’s Education Lounge until September 1, and for 2 days only come to +Culture Shots.

RNCM Piano Series Eye Hospital Atrium 3pm Bringing the +Culture Shots 2013 programme to a close will be a musical performance courtesy of the RNCM’s Piano Series. Allow a piano duo and double bass to play for you in a free concert that is sure to round off +Culture Shots week beautifully.
