FOREWORD

At the outset, I would like to wish a very Happy New Year to all of our readers on this first month of 2023!

As one year welcomes the next, millions of people are taking this time to reflect on the past year to assess what was and to envision the year ahead to make choices on what can be. So, I take this moment to share some of my thoughts with you. Most would describe 2022 as a year that challenged us to grow in resilience as individuals and a society. That is, to accept whatever life presents us and expand our ability to respond in the healthiest way possible.

Thumbay Group is no different, and the previous year made us assess the needs of the community and choose actions that accelerated growth. Therefore, 2022 presented us with multiple opportunities, asked us to become more alert to changes around us, and be more adept at choosing healthy responses.

In the closing months of 2022, Gulf Medical University hosted two major events: the first was the 19th convocation ceremony under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council, UAE, and Ruler of Ajman, where the achievements of 439 graduates from 43 nationalities were honored. Secondly, the 16th edition of the Annual Medical, Art and Science Exhibition (MASE) concluded on a high note, which saw the participation of more than 55 schools competing in six different categories- including project, poster, painting, music, poetry, and business ideas. The previous year’s MASE had displayed 641 exhibits across various categories by talented students, and winners were awarded AED 30,000 in cash prizes. Last but certainly not the least, it also gives me great pleasure to state that 2022 marked completion of Gulf Medical University’s 24 years of operations-which has been one of the biggest milestones in the private health education sector.

In 2022, Thumbay Group also worked to address the challenges of our community. We

strengthened our investments in two business divisions, Thumbay Labs and Thumbay University Hospital, by launching 19 short–term online programs and the Centre of Excellence for Bone and Joint, respectively. Developed together with Gulf Medical University’s academia, the online programs led by Thumbay Labs aims to ensure students have access to better, high-quality research and industry expertise, which are currently utilized across the diagnostic industry. Also, the Centre of Excellence for Bone and Joint brings some of the best technologies to this region that will help patients access effective and efficient treatment models in orthopedics. In addition, Thumbay Group welcomed onboard 23 UAE nationals to our workforce, with an aim to empower and support skilled Emiratis to build a career path in the healthcare and medical education sector, and nurture their career paths.

In the past year, I have also been fortunate to be honored with the "Vishwa Manya" award by the Maharaja (King) of Mysore Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar and Anand Guruji. It was indeed special and I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to them.

To summarize, in the year gone by, we listened to the challenges that our community was experiencing, and we adapted our services and technologies to meet them. I look forward to the coming days with great optimism for the launch of our Healthvarsity. This one-of-its-kind medical learning platform has also been tied-up with the distinguished London University.

Last but not the least, my dear Thumbay Group colleagues, partners, and those of you we serve; I see the hills we have climbed together. I know that there is no mountain too high for those committed to climb it.

Thank you for the faith you have in Thumbay Group, and the choices you have made to make us part of your journey. In 2023, we will strive every day to earn the great honor you do us by being a part of our journey. We wish you all health, happiness, faith, and resilience in this New Year!

How happiness impacts your immune system

While most of us take care of our body by eating healthy, exercising, and more, Mai Elsayed, Clinical Hypnotherapist and PRCA NextGen MENA Committee Member reveals that by being in a state of contentment or happiness can actually contribute to a more robust immune system and keep you healthier in the long run.

NO SOLID DEFINITION FOR HAPPINESS

According to Elsayed, there is no one solid definition for happiness. She adds, “Biologically speaking, happiness is an emotional state that we experience when neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin get released by our body. It is objective because there are specific physiological indications that a person is in a state of joy. However, the psychological process of happiness is subjective as it differs from one individual to another based on their values,

experiences, expectations, and needs.” Some psychologists have described happiness as the lens through which one views the external world, but there are external and internal factors that contribute to the intensity of this emotion.

RESEARCH CORRELATING HAPPINESS AND IMMUNITY

Studies have shown that there is a link between the well-being of individuals and their level of happiness, reveals Elsayed. “In 2008, scientific research that was published in the Official

Journal of the Psychosomatic Society proved that happiness or ‘positive affect’ protects against cardiovascular disease. On the same days that participants’ heart rates showed healthier patterns, they also expressed feeling happy.” Additionally, the relationship between the immune system and positive emotions like happiness is not fully understood yet. However, many studies have shown that happy people tend to have a stronger immune system and therefore, can fight diseases much more effectively.

WHAT DOES BEING IN THE STATE OF HAPPINESS DO FOR WELL-BEING

There is an indirect link between feeling happy and our well-being. When people are happier, adds Elsayed; they tend to make better choices and engage in healthier behaviors including their food and lifestyle selection. “Similarly, eating healthy food, exercising, and sleeping early are all habits that boost our mood and enhance our mental health,” she says, therefore, engaging in healthy behavior makes us feel happier. A 2008 study that analyzed the link between a healthy lifestyle and psychological well-being found that 47 percent of the participants who expressed having sleeping disorders symptoms also reported low levels of positive affect. This could indicate that having a good night’s sleep is directly linked to our emotional state.

WORKING TOWARDS BEING HAPPY

Can a person inculcate certain habits/traits to initiate the process

towards contentment? Elsayed points out that in many cases, cognitive behavioral therapy helps patients develop a sense of emotional intelligence and understand what their internal and external emotional triggers are. “Also, doing inner child work in a therapeutic context can help trauma sufferers release so much of the psychological baggage that could be causing intrusive, anxious thoughts and unpleasant feelings.”

HAPPINESS CAN BE TAUGHT

Happiness can be taught by allowing people to do the things that bring them closer to their real self and who they really are. “So many of us lose the emotions of happiness whilst we grow up because we forget to allow our inner child to enjoy the process of everything we do. We get caught up in the responsibilities of life and forget to appreciate the little things that make us human and bring so much value to our life,” she says.

HELPFUL TIPS TOWARD ATTAINING HAPPINESS

Make peace with your inner child; accept that even as adults, we all have an inner child that wants to play and have fun. Allow that little one to enjoy the beauty of life.

Do the things that make your heart smile; we often allow ourselves to follow the paths that our guardians engraved for us without stopping to think if the life we are living today truly represents our values and identity. Ask yourself what you really want and engage in activities that bring you closer to your goals.

Understand that nothing lasts forever; sometimes, life throws unpleasant surprises at us but you need to remind yourself that every experience is short-lived. So, try to find the opportunity in every challenge instead of dwelling on the negative aspects.

Feel grateful for every little thing you have; gratitude is more than a magical feeling. It is a mindset and a way of living. The more grateful you are for the little things that add color and flavor to your life, the fuller and happier your heart will be. H

HOW DIGITIZATION HAS TRANSFORMED DENTISTRY

Innovation and digitization has trickled into every sector, including healthcare as digitization is transforming the way dentistry is being done and is also shifting the patient experience. HEALTH speaks with Dr. Vishaakh Bhalla, GP Dentist (Endodontics) to learn more.

MAKING DENTISTRY MORE SEAMLESS

These days, healthcare, including dentistry, is completely different than what it was even a decade ago. Digitization has actually made dentistry more seamless, from x-rays, to diagnosis and even the procedures. “Treatment prognosis has become better due to visualization and magnification allowing dental procedures to be completed much more precisely than they

were a decade ago,” he reveals. “The x-ray magnification is detailed and allows for absolutely impeccable attainment of treatment objectives while carrying out dental treatment.”

ENABLING DENTAL PREVENTION

In terms of prevention, digitization has leveraged dental prevention in multiple ways, says Dr. Bhalla. “Due to digitization, the use of apex locators and computer aided x-rays help enable a deeper understanding while diagnosing the dental issue,” he explains, for example, magnified x-rays allow the dentist to identify situations where a root canal treatment is required or if not severe, then planning for a dental filling.

EXCITING ASPECTS OF THE FUTURE OF DENTISTRY

Robotics, he says, in dentistry could entirely change the way dentistry is practiced around the world. “Using artificial intelligence in dentistry would allow to identify dental issues while they were still asymptomatic.” Yet despite advances in digitization, some aspects of dentistry remain the same, says Dr. Bhalla. He adds, “One is the trust the patient has in the doctor. Dentists striving for excellence and working as a team to deliver the best care for the patient. Digitization has made dentistry very convenient and quicker for doctors and patients alike, but as technology advances the extent of digitization is only going to get wider.”  H

Chronic sleep deprivation

According to Dr. Ajaz Yasmeen, Specialist Internal Medicine, chronic sleep deprivation is defined as preventing individuals from obtaining less than seven hours per night, but more than four hours per night. Chronic short sleep produces hormones and chemicals in the body, which he says highlights the risk of developing strokes, heart disease, and other conditions, including obesity, cholesterol, and diabetes.

Regulation of hormones

Having eight hours of sleep every night is one of the best ways to regulate stress hormones like cortisol. He adds, “Although getting your rest at night is best, making up for lost hours by taking a nap during the day can still help normalize your cortisol levels.” As elevated cortisol levels can trigger multiple health problems, including food cravings, elevated blood sugar, acne, high blood pressure, muscle loss, mood swings, irritability, and more, maintaining cortisol in the normal range is vital for optimal health.

Increased risk of diabetes

According to researchers, decreased sleep duration is linked with an increased risk of incident impaired fasting glycemia

(IFG), a pre-diabetic condition characterized by blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but yet not high enough to be classified as diabetes. Dr. Yasmeen elaborates, “It was found that less than six hours of sleep was associated with a significant, three-fold increased likelihood of developing IFG, compared to people who got an average of six to eight hours sleep a night.”

Risk of metabolic syndrome

Studies have also demonstrated the links between certain sleep problems and the development of metabolic syndrome, a medical diagnosis that refers to the presence of at least three of the five primary risk factors that are associated with diabetes, heart disease and stroke. The results of the study revealed that 70 percent of people who do not sleep well and 80 percent of those who have trouble falling asleep are twice as likely to develop symptoms of metabolic syndrome as those who do not experience sleeping difficulties. These five factors include high triglycerides, high blood sugar, excess abdominal fat, high blood pressure, and low HDL cholesterol.

Trigger for obesity

As both men and women age, they naturally spend less time in deep sleep, which lowers GH

secretion, a hormone that is secreted during the first round of deep sleep. Lack of sleep at a younger age can potentially drive down GH prematurely, accelerating the fat-gaining process, as this hormone directly controls the distribution of fat and muscle throughout the body.

Potentially triggering heart disease and stroke

According to a major longterm study, prolonged sleep deprivation increases the risk of suffering from a stroke or heart disease.

The trend for late nights and early mornings was described as ‘a ticking time bomb’ by the researchers at the University of Warwick who linked a lack of sleep to a range of disorders which often result in early death, explains Dr. Yasmeen. H

Digital Technology is Transforming the Plastic Surgery Sector

As the cosmetic surgery sector, both invasive and noninvasive, continues to boom, digitization is playing a key role in transforming this sector. Dr. Faisal Ameer, Consultant, Clinical Assistant Professor and Head of Division Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, reveals more.

Digital technology has revolutionized many industries, and plastic surgery is no exception, says Dr. Ameer. “In recent years, the use of digital tools and techniques has become increasingly prevalent in the field of plastic surgery, offering a range of benefits to both patients and surgeons.”

Key impacts

According to Dr. Ameer, one major area where digitization has had a significant impact is in the consultation process. He explains, “Traditionally, patients seeking plastic surgery would meet with their surgeon in person to discuss their desired procedure and review before-and-after photos. With the advent of virtual consultations, however, patients can now have a consultation with their surgeon from the comfort of their own home using video conferencing tools such as Skype or Zoom.” This not only saves patients time and money, but it also allows them to get a better

understanding of the procedure and what to expect before committing to surgery.

3D printing and CAD

Another area where digitization has made a big impact, he reveals, is in the use of 3D printing and computer-aided design (CAD) in plastic surgery. “These technologies allow surgeons to create a precise model of a patient’s face or body, which can then be used to plan the surgery and determine the best surgical approach,” he says, for example, a surgeon may use a 3D model to visualize how a patient’s nose will look after rhinoplasty, or how a patient’s breast will look after augmentation. “This can help the surgeon to better understand the patient’s anatomy and ensure that the surgery is as successful as possible.”

During the surgery

In addition to planning and consultation, digitization has also played a role in the actual surgical process. “For example, some surgeons are using robots to assist with procedures such as breast augmentation and tummy tucks,” says Dr. Ameer. “These robots can be programmed to make precise incisions and perform other tasks with a high degree of accuracy, reducing the risk of errors and complications.”

The application of digital tools

Digital tools are also being used to improve post-surgery recovery and follow-up care. For example, some surgeons are using virtual reality (VR) technology to help patients visualize their post-surgery results and get a better understanding of the recovery process. VR can also be used to provide post-surgical rehabilitation, allowing patients to perform exercises and movements in

a virtual environment under the guidance of a therapist.

Potential drawbacks

There are, of course, some potential drawbacks to the use of digital technology in plastic surgery, he says. “One concern is the issue of privacy, as the use of virtual consultations and other digital tools may involve the sharing of personal information online,” he says, adding, “additionally, there is a risk that patients may become overly reliant on technology and may not fully understand the limitations and potential risks of plastic surgery.” Overall, the digitization of plastic surgery has brought many benefits, including improved consultation, planning, and recovery. However, Dr. Ameer points out that it is important for both patients and surgeons to be aware of the potential risks and limitations of these technologies and to use them responsibly. “As with any medical procedure, it is essential for patients to thoroughly research and carefully consider their options before committing to surgery,” he explains. H

The Practical Aspects of Intranasal Corticosteroid Use: Important Educational Points Patients Should Know

Intranasal corticosteroids (INSs) are the most effective class of medication for controlling nasal symptoms. To achieve their optimal benefits, it is extremely important that patients use INSs correctly and consistently. Assisting patients with product selection and providing instructions regarding the proper use of INSs, pharmacists can help patients achieve the best possible outcomes. Diana Malaeb, PharmD., BCPS, PhD, explains more.

The two INS products

According to Malaeb, two INS products that are now available over the counter for the relief of nasal symptoms include Nasacort Allergy 24HR (triamcinolone acetonide) and Flonase Allergy Relief (fluticasone propionate). “Both products are indicated for use in adults and children; with Nasacort advised for patients’ over age two, and Flonase for patients’ over age four.”

Instructions for using INS Nasal Sprays

Before the first use, patients need to prime the spray bottle. To do so, advise patients to shake the bottle well and to press and release the nozzle, away from the face, until a fine mist is produced. The spray bottle should be re-primed if it has not been used for some time (two weeks or longer for Nasacort, one week or longer for Flonase).

First, remove the cap and shake the bottle. Press and release the spray nozzle until a fine mist is produced. This may take several times. Take care not to spray in your face. To use the INS spray, patients should first gently blow their nose to clear the nostrils. Instruct them to remove the cap and shake the spray bottle, then to close off one nostril by pressing against the outside of that nostril with their finger. It is important to administer the spray away toward the back of the nose and away from the nasal septum, as spraying INSs directly on the nasal septum may increase the likelihood of experiencing epistaxis. While sniffing gently, patients should press down on the spray nozzle to administer 1 spray. Depending on the dosing, another spray may be administered into the same nostril. Patients should then repeat this procedure with the second nostril. To help prevent dripping into the back of the throat, direct patients not to tilt their head back. After use, patients should wipe the nozzle with a clean tissue and replace the cap. At times, patients may seek advice on cleaning a blocked INS spray bottle. Instruct them to remove the cover, pull off the spray

nozzle, soak the nozzle in warm water for a few minutes, rinse the nozzle with cold water, and allow the pump to air dry before replacing the spray nozzle. Patients’ should not try to unblock the nozzle with a pin or sharp object because doing so can damage the nozzle, resulting in inaccurate dosing.

Instructions for using INSs

1. Blow nose gently to clear nostrils.

2. Remove cap and shake spray bottle.

3. Press against the outside of one nostril with your finger to close off that nostril.

4. Insert spray nozzle into the other nostril and aim the nozzle toward the back of the nose and away from the nasal septum.

5. Spray into the nostril while sniffing gently. Depending on the dosing, another spray may be administered into the same nostril.

6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for the other nostril.

7. After use, wipe the nozzle with a tissue and replace cap.

Dosing

Dosing varies by product, and it must be used every day in regularly spaced doses and around four to six weeks may pass before you begin to notice improvement in your condition. It may take several months before you feel the full effects of this medicine.

For Nasacort, adults and adolescents should start treatment with two sprays into each nostril once daily. After allergy symptoms improve, this may be reduced to 1 spray into each nostril once daily.

For Flonase, adults and adolescents should start treatment with two sprays into each nostril once daily. After the first week, this may be reduced to 1 spray into each nostril once daily. If one spray into each nostril does not control symptoms, the patient should go back to two sprays. Although nasal symptoms may improve within 3 to 12 hours, optimal control may take several days of regular INS use.

Patients should be aware that INSs work best when used daily.

Side effects

Gargling and rinsing your mouth with water after each dose may help prevent hoarseness, throat irritation, and infection in the mouth. However, do not swallow the water after rinsing.

The pharmacist’s role

Pharmacists should direct patients to prime the spray bottle before first use and if the spray bottle has not been used in some time, two weeks or longer for Nasacort, one week or longer for Flonase. To help prevent epistaxis, pharmacists should instruct patients to spray INSs away from the septum. Why is anemia so hard to grapple with?

Defined

According to Dr. Mamoon, having anemia, also referred to as low hemoglobin, can make you feel tired and weak. “Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that gives the red color to blood,” she says, and it carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. She adds, “The most common form of anemia is iron deficiency anemia IDA with symptoms that include low iron intake, blood loss anywhere from body, and increased demand like during childhood and pregnancy.” As red blood cells carry oxygen to the body’s tissues, IDA is due to insufficient iron. Without enough iron, the body is unable to produce enough hemoglobin in the red blood cells that enables them to carry oxygen, and the result of IDA is often shortness of breath and fatigue.

The risks and the red flags

Individuals at high risk for anemia, reveals Dr. Mamoon, include children, women of reproductive age, individuals prone to bleeding, as well as individuals undertaking blood thinning medications. “The red flags of anemia include weight loss, yellow discoloration of the skin, and active bleeding, amongst others,” she says.

Complications of anemia if left untreated

Undiagnosed or untreated irondeficiency anemia may cause serious complications such as fatigue, headaches, restless legs syndrome, heart problems, pregnancy complications, and developmental delays in children, she explains. “Iron-deficiency anemia can also make other chronic conditions worse or cause their

treatments to work poorly,” she explains.

Treatment for anemia

Iron supplements, also referred to as oral iron tablets, is the most common treatment for iron deficiency anemia, reveals Dr. Mamoon. “It often takes three to six months to restore your iron levels, and there are also forms of iron injections available,” she says, in addition to blood transfusion which is also an option in severe cases. She adds, “The first line in treatment is a diet enriched in iron rich foods which include animal sources of iron, which are fast and easy in absorption, including egg, liver, and seafood.” Other foods that can be used to help with anemia include beans, dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, dried fruit, such as raisins and apricots, as well as ironfortified cereals, breads, and pastas. “The daily requirement of iron is variable from person to person and in the same person intermittently.”

Conclusion

The good news, she says, is that IDA is a preventive disease by an early diagnosis of iron store depletion ID while before blood concentration dropped IDA and iron store depletion ID is both similar clinically in terms is symptoms. During a routine blood checkup, the blood reports can suspect iron store depletion before anemia actually develops even several months before. H

Why creativity is so important

According to Ghione, we are aware now more than ever the importance of looking after our mental health and well-being and the arts can play an important role in this. She adds, “Having a creative outlook can improve our overall health as being creative can increase positive emotions. Engaging in artistic activities – ranging from craft, sculpture, digital art, text, dance, film, literature, music and singing to gardening and the culinary arts, can help many people express themselves, without always having to use words.” The arts also help at a community level as it encourages social interactions. A creative output can help to boost confidence and make us feel more engaged and resilient.

Creativity put on the back burner

Ghione points out that today’s young adults need skills that look further than science, technology, engineering, and maths.

“STEAM, which include the arts, can help with teamwork, cooperation, creativity and adaptation to change are all skills which are important to instil in our children to help their emotional wellbeing as they grow older and into adulthood,” she says, adding, “we hope that by encouraging the teaching of STEAM, as children grow up, they will continue with their creative outputs into adulthood as they have seen

the benefits first hand from a young age.”

Creativity as a wellness exercise

Think of practicing creativity as a wellness exercise, says Ghione, like having a healthy diet or working out. “Even if we do not think of ourselves as artists or creative innovators, we all have the energy, intelligence and discipline to expand on our ability to express ourselves and be creative,” she explains, and drawing, painting, singing, dancing, or writing are all ways to unleash some of our creative talents. “In fact, the experiences we have while being creative or artistic are like experiences we gain during meditation, mindfulness, and yoga exercises. Creativity is designed to help us find peace, calm, and happiness in our everyday lives.” In children and teens, It’s incredibly important that children are exposed to the arts from a very young age, she says, and we have always had several activities for children and families taking place during and around of Art Dubai. “We’re particularly proud of the A.R.M. Holding Children’s Program which starts each year at Art Dubai and features artist led workshops for children aged 5 to 17 years,” she says, after each edition of Art Dubai, the program expands across Dubai to around 100 schools and more than 6,000 children and is the largest of its kind in the UAE. This kind

of innovative, artist and partner-driven approach is crucial, as it fills a gap in a meaningful way. “A.R.M. Holding, our partner on the project, has a commitment to artistic education and supporting the development of Dubai’s creative economy so there’s a depth and longterm approach to it,” she explains. “Our 2022 program focused on sustainability and encouraging the repurposing and recycling of discarded materials and was a huge success.” This year’s edition will feature Swedish artist Jacob Dahlgren, who will be leading students in imagining and collaging together designs that will later be sewn and transformed into flags, using mundane materials from Dahlgren’s local surroundings. An extension of his ongoing project Signs of Abstraction, the workshop will give students around the UAE the opportunity to learn how to think about their environments and work together creatively and abstractly towards a common goal, all while creating collaborative artworks. She adds, “We also run an extensive school tours program so children can come and visit the fair with their schools and have a curated trail. Then during the five days of the fair, we have a huge variety of art on show, ranging from painting, sculpture and live performances to the most cutting-edge digital art.”

Tips to help harness our daily creativity

Rather than boxing your creativity into one style, consider how you can make it something you do on a regular basis. Keep an art journal and a few supplies out. Doodle on your grocery list. Draw notes for the kids’ lunches. Giving yourself regular opportunities to create will allow you to expand the time you are able to spend creating. Also, disconnecting from technology and spending time in nature has shown to increase performance in creativity and problem-solving by 50 percent.

Nature provides emotionally positive stimuli for enhanced creativity, so if you can, set aside some time each day to be outside. Even 10 minutes a day can make a difference and give your mind a break. H

(August 07, 2022) ‘Digital Wellbeing’: The Need of the Hour in Today’s Digitalized and Technology Driven World!) They say that a dramatic spike has been observed in their usage that has now slowly developed into an unconscious, effortless reach-out for gadgets even when it isn’t mandatory, and gadgets and technology have been incorporated into our private and professional lives.

The implications

As per their research, it was discovered that their design to lure attention has enabled an average person to tap and swipe their phones around 2600 times a day, which has triggered an individual to spend around three to five hours per day. In university students across the globe, there is a risk of addiction due to the constant use of gadgets that causes abandonment of work and engagement in unnecessary screen time. Some of these implications include a decline in their academic performance and energy due to lack of sleep which has further added to a stressful lifestyle, as well as increased social pressure to constantly be

in touch with peers, safety issues due to excessive usage, and an overall decrease in mood and well-being.

The concept of digital well-being

Digital well-being essentially focuses on incorporating and adapting personal tech habits to fulfil essential targets. Digital wellness essentially prioritizes the level of self-control one can assert over their usage of digital devices and focuses on aligning them to achieve long-standing goals. Selfcontrol as the focus of attaining digital well-being is seen to be more effective, and a means to achieve personal and healthy lifestyles. Although individuals have expressed an interest in setting self-limits and restricting the usage of smartphones, committing to these has proven to be challenging. There has been the development of many productivity-promoting apps and tools for individuals to set restraints and limits.

The impact of excessive use of digital technology

According to researchers, current evidence suggests that typical or balanced digital technology use will not harm adolescents or students and digital technology use is more likely to affect short-term positive or negative affect than long-term life satisfaction. However, excessive, or inappropriate use may lead

to adverse effects including insufficient sleep, lack of energy, poor academic achievement, altered psychological wellbeing, withdrawal, functional impairment, compulsive behavior, physiological stress, mind wandering, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder related behavior, nonadaptive/ negative thinking styles, and/or decreased life satisfaction.

Digital detox

Digital detox interventions wherein an individual observes voluntary abstinence from social media and technology have been suggested as a solution to reduce the negative impacts of smartphone use on outcomes like well-being or social relationships. These interventions are a solution to minimize digital addiction, and in fact, digital detox intervention studies have shown that there has been a significant reduction in stress, improved sleep hygiene, and overall improved mental health. In her book 24/6, Tiffany Shlain discussed how it’s necessary to take a break from technology and smartphones once a day according to convenience to promote balance and recharge oneself with social interactions. She talks about putting aside a day for self-reflection and regaining control of one’s life. H

According to Dr. Khan, when we talk about sustainability, the first thing that pops up in our mind is the eco-friendly solution and a greener way of living. “However, environmental sustainability is a smaller part of the bigger picture,” he says, as many of us believe that after so many campaigns and school literature on environmentally friendly lifestyles, there is no significant change in society or why our kids don’t grow into adults who have sustainable resources. He believes the problem lies in us. He explains, “Family is the basic unit that constitutes the whole of society. Without sustainability in the fundamental unit, unstable and disturbing practices will persist. Kids are very good observers and followers; they don’t do what you tell them; they follow what you show them. So as parents, it’s our responsibility to raise mentally, emotionally, and economically stable children who will make ecofriendly choices themselves.”

Inculcating habits in children

Children absorb what goes into their family, he says, so if a family is emotionally and economically stable, it has more chances of raising tough kids who don’t panic about anything life throws at them. He advises to change your way of living and make choices to give your kids a sustainable future in all avenues including health, emotional, financial, or environmental. “Sustainability practices surely can be inculcated provided we as parents believe in them and practice them on daily basis and also talk about them frequently with our children,” says Dr. Khan.

Sustainability with gadgets

To help reduce our carbon footprint with gadgets, Dr. Khan suggests to use less energy and teach your kids

to practice using natural light and air as much as possible and save on using extra lights or heater. “Also, upgrade to energy-saving lights and appliances; replace your appliances and lights with LED and less energy-consuming ones,” he says. “Limit screen time as another way to teach your kids about energy consumption and to engage in some physical activity, have a no gadget hour every day, also try to limit the use of temperature regulating devices less and instead wear more layers of clothing.”

Lifestyle tips to encourage sustainability

● Be there for your child when they are sad, anxious, or afraid. Listen to their small problems and comfort them, so they grow up as strong adults with no emotional traumas.

● Play with your kids every day to release their energy and make a habit of working out together as a family.

● Make them shop on a budget at grocery store to establish money management and savings

● Practice the no-violence rule to raise stable kids with a positive mindset. Don’t shout and don’t practice physical punishment. Encourage them do things with patience which will build a strong character that doesn’t change and persists for a lifetime.

● Plant trees, clean your beaches

and encourage pets. This will help them stay connected with nature.

● Teach them empathy and make them understand the pain of others and to go a step further to encourage them to help someone either financially, physically or emotionally.

● Have a democratic system in your home where everyone can express their opinions and feel respected.

● Engage in some spiritual practices or religious activities to refresh the soul and mind and connect with nature. H

Setting milestones for the UAE

One of the key projects being showcased is the Sharjah Waste to Energy Plant, the region’s first commercialscale plant of its kind. The plant is equipped to divert 300,000 tons of waste away from landfill every year while meeting the power needs of approximately 28,000 homes in Sharjah. Here to explain more, Dr. Saliha Afridi, Clinical Psychologist reveals that good intentions and great goals are not enough to change behavior, and rather, we first must understand what purpose the current behaviors are serving before we can make lasting change.

The kinds of goals we should be setting

It is important to look at the different areas of your life and rate yourself on how you feel in the different areas, says Dr. Afridi. “Once you have done this, then set goals for each area, and then prioritize the ones that seem most pressing and will have the biggest impact on all the different areas of your life; for example, your physical health goals should be a priority because they impact how you show up in all areas of your life.”

Documenting your goals

Dr. Afridi advises next to write short term/quick win goals, medium term goals, and longterm goals for each area. She adds, “Do not ask others about what your goals should be. First, spend time with yourself and reflect on what gives you fulfilment and try to build that into your goals. You can then work with a coach or a therapist to discuss the life goals.” Just some of these categories include work, physical health, personal growth, friends and family, intimate relationships, finances, and fun/entertainment.

The steps moving forward

According to Dr. Afridi, people set goals without considering the science of goal setting and habit change. “They believe that

wanting something, mustering enough willpower, and believing that they are committed is enough to get them to achieve their goal, but this is not the case,” she says, as the more established the habit, the more difficult it will be to wire your brain’s neural pathways into a new and healthy habit. “Habit change is basically like trying to break an addiction—it takes intention, effort, willpower, understanding of the underlying issues, triggers, and bounce back plans.”

Creating intention

First, set an intention and be clear about your motivation. “The ‘why’ is more important to consider than the ‘how’ sometimes,” she explains. “Also, have a schedule and a plan.” Speak in “if-then statements” If I crave a cigarette I will chew gum, or If I go to the grocery store, I will avoid the junk food aisle. Time management becomes very important during habit change. If I want to start the habit of exercising

or decluttering once a week or calling friends or family more often, it will need to be scheduled in and planned for. She advises to troubleshoot and build in room for bad days. She elaborates, “Also, make micro-habits. Break the habit into the smallest steps. Instead of saying I will work out 30 minutes a day, start with 5k steps or 7 minutes at the gym, do 5 leg raises every time you go to the printer at work. The goal is not baby steps… it’s tiny, micro-movements until enough momentum and esteem are developed and then you can move faster towards your goal.” Also, change your environment. “If you are trying to lose weight, don’t bring sugar home, if you are trying to stop smoking don’t go into a smoking restaurant. Also have stress-reducing elements in your environment, as stress reduces willpower and we move into our default, unconscious settings. To stay conscious and on course, we have to manage our stress and our time.” H

Chef Gordon Ramsey never fails to impress with his diverse and healthy offerings at this selfserve brunch that’s absolutely perfect for families with a special kids corner and an outdoor play area for young ones to enjoy their time. We loved their cold starter counter which offered treats like beef tartare, smoked turkey breast, and much more. Then a huge, iced seafood section with oysters, lobster, crab, while in their hot starters section, we got to sample Gordon Ramsey’s signature appetizers including crab croquettes, beef tacos, chicken and leek pot pie, which was our unanimous favorite, and vegan sausage puffs.

A sporty polo style brunch, an Italian feast by the waterfront, and a celebrity chef’s family lunch; here is our roundup of some of the best dining experiences.

Mains included a selection of Chef Gordon Ramsey’s signature dishes, including whole baked fish from the wood oven, roast beef with the trimmings, a live barbeque station where we enjoyed Wagyu burgers and ribs, and we simply could not resist the gooey mac ‘n’ cheese from their live pasta station. There were Indian curries on offer, including dal makhani served with flaky breads.

They have a huge selection of desserts here, including a decadent chocolate fountain, my favorite sticky toffee pudding, chocolate brownie mousse cream, tempting salted caramel eclairs, a carrot cake that we had to sample more than once, and so much more. If you’re looking for a family friendly, fun brunch don’t miss this venue.

The Fabulous Brunch at Andalucia, Al Habtoor Polo Resort

With stunning views of the polo grounds and an expansive outdoor deck for dining and live barbeque, this is the ultimate sensorial experience the entire family will enjoy.

The self-serve brunch includes large salad sections spread across several counters with healthy options that included pumpkin and smoked cheese mousse, inverted tomato burratino, Mexican bean salad, Pommary chicken salad, seafood ceviche, prawn cocktail salad, and more.

The hot starters were diverse and included assorted dim sum, Indian samosas, spinach sambusak, cheese sticks, spinach empanadas, vegetable spring rolls to cheese sambosek and spinach fatayer, and more, along with two kinds of soups: lentil and mushroom.

The live barbeque grill cooking station featured the best in Argentinean meats with beef tenderloin, beef striploin, garlic parsley prawns, as well as Arabic styled shish tawook and lamb kofta, with lots of sides on the house. I enjoyed my tenderloin cooked medium well with a side of grilled corn, mashed potatoes, and topped with chimichurri sauce. There is also a live pasta station indoors where we enjoyed spaghetti Bolognese and fettucine alfredo.

As we watched the polo teams practicing while we dined, from the desserts section, we feasted on mud cake, ice cream, banana caramel tart, honey cake, black forest cake, opera cake, dark chocolate cake, and more.

Vivaldi at Sheraton Dubai Creek Hotel & Towers

A gorgeously decorated venue, this truly stands out not only for the dining experience but the stunning views of Dubai’s Creekside where we could see the yachts and abras drifting by as we dined.

We were first served a fresh breads basket with balsamic vinegar and olive oil and then from the antipasti, we tucked into the burrata which complemented the tanginess of the juicy cherry tomatoes. And the frittura di calamari e gamberi was fantastic with the crunchy calamari, zucchini, and prawns, served with a dipping sauce. We also loved the flavorful tomato and chunky minestrone soups.

The pizzas here, are of course in authentic Italian style and

we tried their signature Diavola with tomato sauce, mozzarella, spicy beef salami, and parmesan, topped with basil. In between, we enjoyed a nice variety of their signature mocktails, including Maracujna with passion fruit; the heady banana colada with coconut milk and fresh pineapple.

From the pasta section of the menu, we loved the tagliatelle porcini e tartufo which was tagliatelle pasta cooked with porcini mushrooms, and a generous shaving of black truffle, as well as the fettucine al salmone e limone which was fettucine pasta cooked al dente with salmon, lemon oil, cream and parsley. Our sharing main was the cotoletta alla Milanese which was a milk fed breaded veal rack

cooked in clarified butter and fresh herbs, served with rocket salad.

The desserts included a richly decadent tiramisu, torta ricotta e pistachio Italian cake with ricotta cheese and pistachio served with pistachio ice cream which we loved; then the cannoli Sicilani which was stuffed with sweet ricotta and chocolate chips, followed by specialty coffee.

Women and bone health

Question: Why are women more prone to issues with their bones? What do you suggest as preventive measures to avoid broken/fractured bones?

Dr. Amit Chaturvedi, Specialist Orthopedic Surgery, Center for Bone & Joint responds, “Patients’ mostly have issues with their bones at the early stages of the third and fourth decade. They usually consult with doctors due to back pain and neck pain. It is relevant more in women because of hormonal imbalance and osteoporosis. It is managed with homecare by exercise and a proper food diet. If a patient has episodes of severe pain that is tolerable, he/she should visit a specialist for a consultation. Some simple ways to promote optimal bone health is by maintaining an active lifestyle, keeping your weight under control, and maintain an intake of vitamin D and calcium to help strengthen the bones. As well as the intake of the correct supplements and sunlight exposure.”

Itchy, scaly skin condition

Question: For the past few years, I have developed red, itchy bumps on my back which has been diagnosed as psoriasis. What exactly is this?

Dr. Dhanya Rajkumar, Specialist Dermatologist responds, “Psoriasis is a common, chronic, inflammatory, and proliferative condition of the skin, associated with systemic manifestations in many organ systems. The most common characteristic is red, scaly, sharply demarcated lesions that are seen particularly over the extensor surfaces and scalp. In fact, according to the International Association of Psoriasis Federations, approximately 125 million individuals across the globe are affected by psoriasis. Special consideration should be given to lifestyle factors and behaviors that contribute to the overall health and treatment responsiveness. These include weight management and smoking cessation. I also recommend using thick, non-fragranced moisturizers daily in conjunction with baths which can be infused with colloidal oatmeal, Epsom salts or coal tar to help alleviate inflammation, irritation, dryness, and redness.

Quitting smoking

Question: I have smoked for the past 25 years and now I would like to quit for good. What are your tips to help?

Dr. Patrick Bigaouette, Psychiatrist, responds, “Nicotine stimulates the reward pathway in the brain, releasing dopamine, which feels good. Over time, you begin to crave the feelings you get from nicotine, and it begins to feel normal. When your body does not have nicotine, it goes into withdrawal. Developing a quit plan can help you prepare and follow through with your decision to quit. Here are some elements of a successful quit plan: start by a commitment to quitting; tell your family, friends, loved ones and those who will be part of your support system. Next, choose a date; be realistic and give yourself some time to get your quit plan in place. Now, form a support system; you might want to find someone to quit with you, join a social media or online support group. Also, know your triggers; maybe it is driving in the car, doing a particular activity or when you are stressed. Think about how you will manage your triggers or avoid them entirely. Also, consider cravings and brainstorm how you will manage cravings and address withdrawal symptoms. Have healthy snacks on hand, practice mindfulness, go for a walk or text a support person. And consider helpful aids, which could include nicotine replacement therapy, such as patches, gum, lozenges, or an inhaler to help.”
