Negotiating through the Maze of Mental Health

Mental Health is a crucial aspect of our lives that helps us bridge the gap between reality and perception. It is crucial to understanding how we deal with stress, how we process the setbacks of the external world and maintain our physical and emotional wellbeing that is key to true happiness. Let’s take a deep dive into the Nexus of Mental Health with personal fulfilment in modern society.

4 Mar/Apr 2024

When Raul failed to clear his grade tenth examination the third time, owing to being dyslexic, a disability that he hadn’t got help for, he just couldn’t handle his own sense of shame and preferred to jump from the tenth floor of his residential building.

We have had many instances where young Rauls have taken an escape route to death when they perform poorly at exams, have a heart break, or disappoint themselves when they fail to measure up to their own benchmarks.

"Mental health in teenagers and adults affects the dynamics of life at home and the workplace impacting quality of living, productivity and resulting in serious relationship breakdowns.

Fear, failure, disappointment, disenchantment are some of the negative emotions that many of us face. Some can confront it with self-belief, confidence, and fight back. Those who give in to stress and suffer debilitating mental health issues succumb to the pressures," said Dr. Ahmadiazad.

Let us look at how mental health defines the lives and success of people and can be a curse if issues relating to it are not addressed.

What constitutes mental health?

The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated October 10 as World Mental Health Day and has recognized mental health as a universal human right.

WHO defines mental health as a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community.

It includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, shaping how we think, feel, and determine the world. It is a vital pillar of overall health, influencing our ability to handle stress, form relationships, and make decisions. From childhood to adulthood, mental health plays a profound role in every stage of life, impacting our thoughts, moods, and behaviors.

How poor mental health impairs critical thinking?

Mental health is the cornerstone of our overall well-being, influencing how we think, feel, and interact with the world around us. From anxiety disorders to depression, bipolar

disorder, substance abuse, and alcohol addiction, the spectrum of mental health challenges faced today by society is vast and complex.

Illnesses in this realm, ranging from mild to severe, can significantly disrupt daily life, affecting one’s ability to work, maintain relationships, and engage in routine activities. Despite their prevalence, mental health conditions often face stigma and misunderstanding, hindering individuals from seeking help and support.

While the effects of mental health challenges may manifest internally, their repercussions extend far beyond the confines of the mind. Research has shown that mental illness can contribute to a myriad of physical ailments, ranging from chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease to weakened immune systems, sleep disturbances, and cardiovascular issues such as hypertension and stroke. Unhealthy coping mechanisms, including substance abuse and overeating, further compound the toll on physical health, leading to a cascade of adverse effects on the body.

5 Mar/Apr 2024

Unraveling the complexities of mental health issues

The five major mental health concerns are anxiety disorders, clinical depression, substance abuse, schizophrenia and bipolar disorders and a common thread in all these is severe stress and the toll it takes. Individuals with a compromised mental health state often succumb to different stress triggers and look to escape these through defense mechanisms.

Anxiety disorders stand as the most prevalent mental health issues today, yet they often dwell in the shadows of misunderstanding and stigma. Distinguishing between typical anxiety and a disorder is vital. Those with anxiety disorders experience intense fear or distress disproportionate to real events, impacting personal and professional relationships. These disorders stem from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and environmental factors.

The Many Faces of Anxiety Disorders

According to the American Psychiatric Association, anxiety disorders manifest in a various type, each presenting unique symptoms that can disrupt daily life:

Panic Disorder: Characterized by sudden, intense panic attacks accompanied by physical symptoms like chest pain or dizziness.

Phobias: Overwhelming fears leading to

avoidance, such as agoraphobia (fear of public places) or specific phobias like fear of flying or heights.

Social Phobia: Intense fear of social situations, resulting in avoidance and self-consciousness.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Triggered by reliving traumatic experiences, with symptoms like flashbacks and depression.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Marked by persistent unwanted thoughts and compulsive behaviors like washing or checking.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Excessive worry about everyday situations, accompanied by physical symptoms like trembling or fatigue.

Effective Treatment and Early Intervention

Effective treatment for anxiety disorders typically involves a multifaceted approach, combining medication and cognitivebehavioral therapy (CBT). Antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs are commonly prescribed to target the biological aspects of anxiety, while CBT helps individuals reframe anxious thoughts and behaviors. Additionally, exposure therapy may be used to address specific phobias or panic disorders. Support groups and educational resources also play vital roles, providing understanding and coping strategies. Early diagnosis is crucial for successful management, as many individuals suffer for years before receiving appropriate treatment. Seeking help from a specialist in anxiety disorders is essential, and involving loved ones in the treatment process can enhance recovery and resilience, paving the way towards healing and an improved quality of life.

6 Mar/Apr 2024

The substance abuse stigma

In today’s fast-paced world, the pressures and stresses of everyday life can sometimes become overwhelming for us. For many individuals, the allure of substances that promises an escape from reality can be all too tempting. Substance abuse, whether it involves legal substances like alcohol and caffeine or illicit drugs such as cannabis and cocaine, can quickly spiral into a silent struggle that affects both mental and physical health. However, substance abuse is often intertwined with challenging mental health circumstances, Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD) or stressful life situations, such as unemployment or strained relationships. Teenage depression, for instance, is a common precursor to drug addiction, highlighting the complex interplay between mental health and substance abuse.

Manifestation

Victims of substance abuse often try to disguise their addictions. But one can spot the signs in behavior shifts, hygiene neglect, financial strain, and social withdrawal. As substance abuse progresses, individuals may lose zest for life, neglect self-care, face relationship strains, and battle cravings and loss of control.

Treatment options

The first aspect is recognizing the signs in your loved ones and helping them without making a judgement.

Seeking professional help early is pivotal to halt addiction’s advance and protect mental and overall well-being. Recognizing the signs and seeking support opens doors to recovery through therapy, support groups, and rehab, offering hope for reclaiming control and lasting wellness. In the UAE, we have smoke cessation clinics, drug

deaddiction clinics and mental health clinics that can offer constructive help.

Mental Health Matters

Alcohol abuse can take a profound toll on mental health. Early warning signs may include changes in sleep patterns, withdrawal from social activities, feelings of hopelessness or helplessness, and mood swings. Addressing these challenges requires a supportive environment comprising trusted individuals who offer guidance, respect, and understanding.

Finding Support

Recovery from alcohol abuse is possible with the right support and resources. Peer support groups offer a valuable source of encouragement and understanding, providing individuals with a sense of community and shared experiences. Active participation in treatment decisions empowers individuals to take charge of their mental well-being, while personalized recovery plans foster growth, wellness, and the realization of one’s potential. While alcohol may seem like a temporary escape, its effects can be far-reaching and harmful. By acknowledging the risks and seeking help when needed, individuals can

tame the temptations of alcohol abuse and pave the way towards a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Clinical Depression

As a mood disorder, depression goes beyond mere sadness. It is a complex mental health condition that can strike anyone, regardless of age. It seeps into every aspect of a person’s existence, making it difficult to function normally. Relationships suffer, work or school becomes a burden, and the simplest tasks feel like monumental challenges. In the darkest of cases, depression can even lead to thoughts of ending one’s own life.

Major depressive disorder is the most common form of depression, marked by episodes that last for at least two weeks. These episodes can recur over time, lingering for weeks, months, or even years. Despite efforts to change their circumstances, those struggling with depression often find themselves trapped in a cycle of despair.

The symptoms of depression are both emotional and physical, ranging from unrelenting sadness and loss of interest in oncebeloved activities to changes in appetite or sleep patterns. Feelings of worthlessness and difficulty concentrating add to the burden, leaving individuals feeling drained of energy and hope.

7 Mar/Apr 2024

A ray of hope with treatment options

Recognizing the signs of depression is the first step towards finding relief. Early intervention and effective management are crucial for reducing the impact of this challenging condition on both mental and physical wellbeing. With the right support and treatment, those battling depression can begin to see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, guiding them towards a brighter tomorrow.

Bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder is a complex mental health condition characterized by extreme shifts in mood, ranging from euphoric highs to profound lows, often making daily life challenging for those affected. These mood swings can include hallucinations and disruptions in energy levels, thinking patterns, behavior, and sleep.

While the exact cause of bipolar disorder remains uncertain, it’s believed to result from a combination of genetic predisposition, chemical imbalances in the brain, and environmental triggers. Genetic factors play a significant role, with about 4 out of 5 cases having a genetic component. Additionally, changes in brain structure and chemistry, along with stressful life events like abuse or family conflicts, can precipitate episodes.

Symptoms

Symptoms of bipolar disorder vary widely and can manifest differently in individuals. Manic episodes are characterized by feelings of euphoria, heightened energy levels, impulsivity, and a decreased need for sleep. On the other

hand, depressive episodes entail profound sadness, fatigue, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, and thoughts of self-harm or suicide. Some individuals may experience rapid shifts between these mood states, while others may have mixed episodes with symptoms of both mania and depression simultaneously.

Stabilizing the Swings

Treatment for bipolar disorder focuses on stabilizing mood and managing symptoms to improve overall quality of life. This often involves a combination of medications such as mood stabilizers and therapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Early diagnosis and ongoing support are crucial for effective management, highlighting the importance of seeking professional help for those grappling with bipolar disorder. By understanding the intricacies of bipolar disorder and adopting appropriate treatment approaches, individuals can manage the rollercoaster of emotions associated with this condition and work towards achieving greater stability and well-being in their lives.

Split personality or Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a dissociative

personality disorder. It has a genetic origin and might run in a family. It begins with psychosis, with delusions of persecution and grandeur and degenerates into a complete loss of touch with reality. The person begins to live in a fictional world with multiple fictional personas.

Symptoms

An individual suffering from early signs schizophrenia, might be introvert, but high functioning person with a meticulous approach, a stickler for punctuality, might talk to himself/herself and suffer from mood swings of extreme elation, aggression to depression.

Seeking help from a mental health expert is like throwing a lifeline to such a person who might be plagued by inhibitions and have no clue how to tackle his own behavior. A combination of medication and structured counselling can help such a person integrate into a regular routine and lead a normal life.

8 Mar/Apr 2024

How to deal with a mental health crisis.

• Shed inhibitions and discuss your issue with family.

• Do not abandon a vulnerable family member and try to have a well-knit social support network.

• If you are staying by yourself, seek advise from office colleagues or friends.

• Mental health is a wellrecognized area, and all leading hospitals have psychological counselling as well psychiatric wards to carry out treatments.

• There is no shame in seeking psychological counselling if a situation or person at the workplace is stressing you out or if a student is under stress.

She champions the use of AI tools, such as chatbots for school counseling, to enhance accessibility, ensure confidentiality, offer personalized support, and reduce the stigma associated with seeking mental health assistance. Misra also highlights the importance of ethical considerations and the necessity of human oversight to ensure AI complements traditional counseling methods effectively.

The UAE’s progressive stance on mental health, championed by professionals like Anamika, sets a benchmark for comprehensive and inclusive mental health care. Through legislative reforms, awareness campaigns, and the embrace of digital health solutions, the UAE is paving the way for a future where mental well-being is prioritized and stigma is eradicated. Digital media overuse is one of the most important aspects of digital addiction that we see in kids today who are either busy on their smart phones, tablets, or electronic games. At schools, children are called Digital natives and do most of their learning on smart devices.

In a Malaysian Pediatric Journal, Louis Lai Sheng Ren, a psychologist at International Psychology Centre explains the phenomenon of overexposure. “The moment a child disengages from usual activities like sports or meeting with friends to spend time on the internet or play online games by themselves, the technology use can be classified as harmful overexposure.”

A moment of truth that all of us must reckon and deal with. It’s time we brought down the curtains on this, with tact and smart negotiation skills.

Lead by Example

Children learn by example. Parents need to display that balance in their own use of digital devices and allocate family time where members keep away their phones and bond over a board game, read a book, learn a musical instrument or physical activity in the park. That translates into quality time spent with family, something children look forward to. This demonstrates to children the importance of finding a balance between screen time and other enriching experiences.

Set Clear Boundaries

Establish clear rules and boundaries regarding screen time usage

and ensure that your children understand and adhere to them. This may include setting specific time limits for device usage, designating screen-free zones within the house, and enforcing consequences for violating rules.

Create Tech-Free Zones

Designate certain areas of your home, such as the dining room or bedrooms, as tech-free zones where electronic devices are not allowed. This encourages unplugged interactions and promotes family bonding without the distractions of screens.

Engage in Family Time

Plan regular family activities that encourage interaction and engagement without the use of

electronic devices. Whether it’s a family picnic, a creative project like completing a giant puzzle, or even teaching your child to cook. Children are usually restless and curious and helping them discover new activities, naturally nurtures their self esteem and happiness, reducing reliance of technology.

Encourage Hobbies

Encourage your children to pursue hobbies and interests that don’t revolve around screens. Whether it’s sports, arts and crafts, music, or gardening, helping them discover and cultivate their passions provides fulfilling alternatives to digital entertainment.

Stimulate creativity

Stock your home with books, board

17 Mar/Apr 2024

games, puzzles, and other forms of entertainment that stimulate creativity and challenge their imagination without the need for screens. Encourage your children to explore new activities and interests that expand their horizons beyond the digital realm.

Be Patient and Supportive

Breaking the cycle of screen addiction takes time and patience. Be supportive of your children as they adjust to new routines and boundaries and provide encouragement and praise for their efforts to reduce screen time.

Identifying Indicators of Screen Addiction

It’s imperative for parents to remain attentive and identify the signs of screen addiction in their children. Some common warning signs include:

Difficulty controlling screen use. Decline in interest towards other activities.

Excessive preoccupation with screens

Impaired social interactions

Family conflicts arising from screen usage.

Break Screen Time Addiction

The World Health Organization (WHO) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) point out the need for establishing a no screen time at all for children until 18

to 24 months, except for video chatting. AAP says kids ages 2 to 5 should get an hour or less of screen time per day.

If you suspect that your child is struggling with screen addiction, there are steps you can take to help them break the cycle:

Establish a consistent schedule for screen time and stick to it. Encourage physical activity and outdoor play as alternatives to screen time.

Prioritize family meals and quality time together without screens.

B e mindful of the immersive nature of digital content and its potential to captivate young minds.

Address withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, mood changes, and sleep disturbances with patience and understanding.

With patience, support, and vigilance, we can empower our children to thrive in a digital world while still embracing the joys of unplugged living. H

Mind heartyourhealth!

Do not ignore and be regular on your heart checks says Dr Brajesh Mittal, senior interventional cardiologist educating on the essentials that every woman must know about heart diseases.

Nathalie had just turned 60 and retired from her job as sales director in a large FMCG chain. She was looking forward to enjoying adventure treks, coffee on a moonlit beach, walks by the sea and many such fun moments with her friends, when she suffered her first heart attack.

It was a diffuse tightness radiating from the central chest region to left arm and jaw as she turned in for the day. Being vigilant, Nathalie asked her husband to drive her to the nearest emergency. Within the next 20 minutes, Nathalie was diagnosed as undergoing a heart attack. Timely procedures by the interventional cardiologist helped clear the severe blockage in her one of the major coronary arteries.

Most women think heart attacks happen to men and they are not at risk. According to the American Heart Association, Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) kills more women than all forms of cancer combined, yet only 44 per cent acknowledge

CVD as health threat.

According to Dr Brajesh Mittal, Deputy Medical Director of Medcare Hospital, leading interventional cardiologist, and convenor of SHAKE (Saving Heart Attacks Key Efforts) conference, it is important for women to understand that they too are at high risk of developing CVD - to get away from a misconception that CVD is a predominant disease of men.

“Women typically turn up for medical consultation regarding heart disease at a much later stage than their men counterpart. Though CVD and heart attacks are equally devastating in women; the only

22 Mar/Apr 2024

respite is they have at least ten years extra span of onset. Typically, after menopause, women have a higher risk because of drop in estrogen and progesterone levels.

Dr Mittal continued, “In women the risk of CVD starts much earlier if they undergo major health issues during pregnancy and childbirth viz gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, hypertension. They have narrower blood vessels including cardiac arteries and are at higher risk for coronary heart disease (CAD) when plaque builds up.”

Neglecting red flags

Dr Mittal added that women usually hold the controls for family wellbeing and are often taking a lot of emotional stress. They need to be mindful of their emotional health as they tend to bottle up their emotions and have a higher rate of incidence of clinical depression, PTSD etc. especially after a miscarriage or because of the stress of juggling domestic and work duties, and the toll of caring for the family.

“Women tend to place their health on last priority often skipping regular check-ups or recognizing a red flag. Added to this is chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, and obesity, early menopause… all these factors increase the risk of heart disease. The problems get compounded if they smoke or have alcohol. Women think heart disease happens to men folk. However, given all the above reasons, it is important a woman undergoes heart screening after 50. If she has a family history of heart disease or other risk factors, she needs to undergo annual screening much earlier.”

Who is at risk for heart disease?

Women with a family history of CVD

Women suffering from

gynecological problems such as PCODS, endometriosis, those with gestational diabetes, premature delivery, early menopause, and those with low iron count.

Smokers and regular alcohol drinkers

Those who are obese have a sedentary lifestyle.

Women with emotional disturbances and depressions Patients with breast cancer are treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Women with diseases like SLE, Rheumatoid disease have also increased incidence of CVD.

Symptoms to watch out for

Chest pain, uneasiness, excessive sweating, radiating pain in left arm to the left jaw.

A feeling of dizziness, palpitation, breathlessness, being unsteady on feet.

Excessive exhaustion and fatigue

Unexplained pain in abdomen, indigestion, nausea after a physical work out.

A stitch in Time…

Every woman over 50 must go in for regular ECG and heart screening.

Women with a family history of CVD or those with existing diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, must establish a regular heart check routine by the age of 40 years of age.

Cutting back on smoking, alcohol consumption and including a higher plant-based portion in the diet, nuts, seeds, high fiber green salad, would help keep LDL cholesterol within check and help delay heart disease in even those who have a predisposition.

Follow an active lifestyle by including at least 30-45 minutes of cardio in your daily routine.

A little education, awareness and lifestyle tweak can go a long way in helping our mother’s daughters and sisters cut back the risk of heart disease!

Myths and Facts

Myth: CVD is less common in women.

Fact: More women than men die of CVD.

Myth: Cancers are number 1 killer

Fact: CVD related deaths are more than all cancers combined.

Myth: CVD is less serious in women

Fact: CVD is more serious in women, higher complications, and deaths.

Myth: No chest pain means no heart problem

Fact: More than 50% women do not have typical symptoms of chest pain; their presentation can be quite varied. H

CVD in women continues to be seriously understudied, underrecognized, under-diagnosed and under-treated. This is primarily the result of various misconceptions, including the widespread view that cardiovascular disease affects men more than it does women. We have kept a special session for Women’s’ Heart in our forthcoming SHAKEHEART 2024 conference on April 21. 5 common gynecological issues to look out for

It’s the month when we celebrate womanhood and all women must take pride in their identity, prioritize their health, go for regular screenings, be prepared for the common pitfalls and health scare and consult the right physician ranging from the gynecologist, nutritionist to endocrinologist, right up to the urologist and oncologist. Seeking medical help at the right time and undergoing regular screenings can help every woman avert major health scares.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a disease in which tissue like the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. It can cause severe pain in the pelvis and make it harder to get pregnant. Endometriosis can start at a person’s first menstrual period and last until menopause. Its cause is unknown, and it can be managed with a healthier lifestyle. Otherwise, surgery is recommended.

Symptoms

• Pain in the lower pelvic region while urination or during menstruation and sexual intercourse

• Bloating, nausea

• Heavy bleeding during menstruation

• Depression, anxiety

• fatigue

Prevention

Studies have shown that intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, rich in antioxidants, lycopene and also consumption of foods rich in omega

three fatty acids can help mitigate the condition. In addition, cutting back on alcohol and caffeine and increasing physical activity can help increase estrogen level in the body and cut back the risk by 40 per cent.

Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition that affects women of reproductive age. It usually starts during adolescence, but symptoms may fluctuate over time. PCOS can cause hormonal imbalances, irregular periods, excess androgen levels and cysts in the ovaries

Symptoms.

• Irregular periods, usually with a lack of ovulation,

• Difficulty in conception and experiencing infertility.

• Excessive weight-gain due to insulin resistance

• Appearance of facial hair (hirsutism) in some cases.

Screening and management

PCOS is a chronic condition and cannot be cured. However, some symptoms can be improved through lifestyle changes, medications, and fertility treatments. The cause of PCOS is unknown but women with a family history or type 2 diabetes are at higher risk.

Patient suffering from PCOS will require an ultrasound scan - which can show whether you have a high number of follicles in your ovaries (polycystic ovaries). The follicles are fluid-filled sacs in which eggs develop. You may also need a blood test to measure your hormone levels and screen for diabetes or high cholesterol.

Pre genetic disposition cannot be averted, it is possible to manage the condition with Lifestyle Changes

• Reduce Sugars and Carbohydrates. Many women with PCOS also have insulin resistance, in which the

24 Mar/Apr 2024

body doesn’t use the hormone insulin effectively. ...

• Manage Weight. Many, but not all, women with PCOS are overweight. Exercise Regularly.

Perimenopause

This is a natural process and a step before menopause when a woman’s ovaries stop working and there is a fall in estrogen levels.

Symptoms

Women usually experience a delay in their menstrual cycle, hot flashes and might experience clinical depression. Perimenopause

is the way a woman transitions to menopause and therefore it is important to consult your gynecologist and know the risk of depleting estrogen levels.

Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Management

Women need to protect themselves from the falling hormonal levels that impact bone density, leading to osteoporosis, disturbance in mental equanimity and result in physical and emotional upheaval. Although there is no specific treatment required, but women can mitigate symptoms by physical workouts, deep breathing, having fresh fruits and vegetables, opting for hormone replacement, taking antidepressants, and consulting one gynecologist.

Menopause

This is a natural biological process that every woman undergoes, usually between the age of 45-52 when she has her last menstruation. Once a woman does not menstruate for over 12 months, she is said to have undergone menopause.

Symptoms

Owing to the hormonal changes in the body, a woman can feel anxious, depressed, experience mood swings, experience skin dryness, pain during sex and a

psychological feeling of a loss of womanhood.

Management

All women are advised to undergo regular mammogram and other preventive cancer screening as well as bone density tests. Women are advised to consult their gynecologist, psychologist, and nutritionist to get the right guidance for their physical, mental, emotional and nutritional guidance to transition smoothly.

Stress Urinary incontinence SUI

This is a condition that is seen in many women post childbirth, usually in women over 50, when the pelvic floor becomes weak. The muscles of the urethra weaken, and the patient has weak bladder control.

Symptoms

Urine can involuntarily spill over when the woman coughs or laughs. It is deeply embarrassing for the woman.

Management

In initial stages pelvic floor exercises, such as Kegels can help tighten the pelvic muscles. Healthy eating habits that encourage weight loss, active lifestyle for weight loss and cutting back on alcohol and caffeine are recommended,

When lifestyle changes cant help, consult a gynecologist who can prescribe medication.

When all else fails, the gynecologist will advise a surgery to inject a water-based gel in the walls of the vagina to bulk up the muscles and encourage bladder control. H

Established over a sprawling area of 65,000 square feet, AGC boasts a diverse selection of indoor and outdoor plants, fresh and artificial flowers, barbecue stations, garden furniture, gardening tools and accessories and so much more! In the short time it was re-opened to the public, since remodeling, the center has fast

become a magnet for gardening enthusiasts all over the UAE.

At first glance, AGC appears to be a lush exotic oasis that has magically mushroomed in the Al Warsan area of Dubai. With its fabulously curated selections of the highest quality horticultural specimen and spectacular range of garden and gardening amenities, the Acacia Garden Center is easily one of the largest and most well-stocked garden centers of its kind in the UAE, if not the region.

Green initiative 26 Mar/Apr 2024
GCEO & Chairman at the Garden Center.

Located in a plot allocated by Dubai Municipality for retail horticultural activities, Acacia Garden Center is a one-stop shop for homeowners as well as small to medium sized businesses looking to upgrade their home and office environment.

A Dream-Come-True

‘’I developed a strong passion for plants early in my career,” says Naser Ahmed, CEO of Tanseeq Investment Group, of which Acacia Garden Center is a subsidiary.

“I am actually a civil engineer by trade but landscaping became my profession,” he explains.

The seed of the idea for building one of the best garden centers in the UAE began germinating in his mind in 2011 after he was inspired by visiting numerous garden centers in the Netherlands during his business trips. The Dutch are renown for their state-of the-art garden centers world-wide.

‘’Those visits left a lasting and indelible impression on me. I was confident that I could launch a garden center in Dubai that not only matches the Dutch’s high

standards, but perhaps even exceeds them.’’

Ahmed nurtured the idea of a Dutch-inspired garden center for close to a decade, determined to create a garden center that would be one of its kind in the region. Acacia Garden Center itself had been newly established in 2010, but Ahmed was looking to completely transform it. Taking it one step at a time and putting a great deal of methodical thought into every aspect of the renovation, he began to finally build the garden center of his dreams in 2023.

The most challenging part was obtaining the necessary approvals from local authorities for the required refurbishment of the garden center, he says. After that the actual process of renovation went very smoothly.

Unique Business Model

‘’The entire process of refurbishment, commissioning, and opening took about six months, because the plan was already clear in my head,” described Ahmed, taking much-

deserved pride in this Herculean accomplishment.

Keen for the garden center to be an attractive retail experience for a wide range of customers and clientele, Ahmed commissioned the existing garden center to be almost completely over-hauled and re-constructed to a fully airconditioned space, complete with a semi-indoor café (coming soon). Supported by large plant nurseries located at a short distance from the garden center complex, AGC offers a unique business model to the region.

With over 30 years of experience in the landscaping industry of the Middle East, Ahmed is well-versed in the intricacies of operating a horticultural business. “The complexities of managing a landscaping and horticulture business have become second nature to me,” he says.

A section of the complex has further been optimized into a courtyard comprising a show garden. In total, he concludes, the complex comprises 56,000 square feet of retail area with 40% of it fully airconditioned.

27 Mar/Apr 2024

Haven for Gardening

AGC required only minimal changes to its outdoor space such as repainting the exteriors, installing several necessary shelves as well as adding some much-needed shaded area. Acacia Garden Center was soon ready to be opened to the public in November 2023.

“The garden center was brought to life with great efficiency by our in-house team in a remarkably short amount of time,” says Ahmed.

During both the planning and renovation stages of rebuilding the project, Ahmed continually sought expert advice from the team at GardenCenterAdvice, a highly respected Dutch-based platform that works closely with suppliers to deliver products to garden centers across the world.

A Unique Design

‘’Acacia Garden Centre is distinguished by its groundbreaking design, thanks to my good friend Dries Jansen of GardenCenterAdvice,’’ says Ahmed.

Acacia Garden Center’s jumbo collection of garden center essentials, remain one of the key features that sets AGC apart. Thanks to a dedicated and extremely wellinformed team of sales and support

staff who are always available to offer expert advice, the garden center has quickly become a favorite amongst customers in not just Dubai but across the country.

As it boldly declares in its website, Acacia Garden Center is truly ‘the ultimate botanical adventure’. A visit to Acacia Garden Center will transport you to a completely different world - one that is a green wonderland teeming with an extensive range of diverse and splendid flowering and nonflowering plants, a huge assortment of cacti, exotic plants, water plants and shrubs, and of course, plenty of local favorites and indigenous flora that are perfect for indoor and outdoor use.

Going Green!

Ahmed remains conscientious of the necessity of sustainable initiatives, even in horticulture. In order to save space, AGC offers the relatively novel technology of vertical gardens to eco-conscious customers.

The Customer Experience

Large geometric shading offers a beautiful retreat for lounging customers. The patterned shape above lends itself to an exquisite,

shadowed arrangement on the ground. If one looks closely, one can even see the shape of flowers and trees created under their feet, in keeping with the obviously botanical theme of the garden center.

Large water features are also visible in several areas of the center that not only help cool the environment in the hotter months, but also offer a soothing and pretty sight.

Customers can easily navigate the store that houses various product categories in a well-thought-out layout, making shopping an eminently pleasurable experience.

Acacia Garden Centre has products that cater to homeowners for DIY projects as well as small and medium enterprises. Care has been taken to ensure that all outdoor plants and trees which have been specially sourced from international vendors are properly acclimatized to the local climate.

Passion on wheels

Yes, if there is one subject, apart of course, from business, that can keep Dr Dhananjay Datar, and his sons Hrishikesh and Rohit discussing, debating, and bonding for hours, it is automobiles. We are talking about luxury cars.

Of boys and their dream machines

The CEO of Adil Trading Co, who is a connoisseur of luxury automobiles, shares an insatiable and unique bond for luxury cars with his scions, a bond that is strengthened every time they happen to come across a beautiful machine on the road.

The Datar family believes in working hard and playing hard too. Once they have poured their heart into their business, they take time out for a leisurely cruise in their dream machines.

30 Mar/Apr 2024
Zip, zap, zoom is the shared mantra that keeps this trio team of father and two sons bound together in a shared passion for the most elegant dream machine on wheels.

If Dr Dhananjay and younger son Rohit cherish the Rolls Royce, a brand that embodies the epitome of luxury and sophistication (a bespoke edition and a Phantom are parked in their garage), Hrishikesh is a fan of Bentley and Mercedes admitting to having a soft spot for the Mercedes G63.

True RR connoisseurs

For both father and son, the Rolls Royce, a mean machine meticulously crafted to perfection, is more than just an automobile; it is a symbol of success, refined taste, and of having arrived in life.

“I am completely charmed by the sleek royal design and opulent interiors of the ‘Phantom’. Every time I slide behind the wheel I am blown away by its super performance on the road,” explains Dr Dhananjay.

Rohit who shares this love, adds: “I am charmed by the classic handcrafted wooden features of the vehicle, its luxurious soft-leather upholstery and unmatched driving experience. I am an avowed RR lover.”

A fan of timeless elegance

Ask Hrishikesh about the reasons behind his choice and he articulates a similar reason for his preference.

“The sleek lines and powerful engines of Bentley have worked their magic on me. This automobile has a timeless design and is known for its exquisite craftsmanship. It’s a contemporary machine that appeals to my sense of style and my taste for classic elegance.”

As for the G63, it is its robust performance and off-road capabilities that can stoke his spirit for adventure and thirst for thrills.

Clearly, what appeals to the three petrol heads is the fact their favorite machines are an ode to magnificent artisanship, cuttingedge technology, and breathtaking performance- factors that appeal to those who appreciate quality, refinement, and class. These vehicles without doubt embody status, luxury, and prestige even as they reflect a certain level of success and dignity.

These factors combined with the brands’ history, heritage, and reputation are what contribute to making these cars appealing to discernible gearheads.

A love passed down from father to sons

It would not be wrong to say that it was Dr Dhananjay who passed down the legacy of his love for all things classic, elegant, refined, and sophisticated to his sons who wholeheartedly embraced it even as they began forging new trails exploring the world of automobiles helping strengthen their bond.

The trio’s shared passion for luxury cars means they spend hours discussing the latest models, embarking on road trips together creating memories that are sure to last a lifetime.

For them, their love for luxury cars is more than just a hobby to be indulged in over the weekends. It signifies a unique bonding amongst them and is a testament to their shared values, dreams, and aspirations. H

Ramadan Detox

The Holy month of Ramadan is the time when we can achieve optimum health by detoxifying our mind, body and soul through food, hydration, thought, breathwork, and sleep. Experts share tips on reclaiming optimal health.

One of the best ways to practice self-discipline is to reign in the five sensory organs and the best way to do this is mind control. During the Holy month of Ramadan get ready to detoxify the mind and body with not just regulation of food and hydration through fasting, but through breath, thought and sleep regulation too.

Intermittent fasting observed during the Holy month of Ramadan for food and hydration helps reboot our physical health. Add to this regulating our circadian rhythm through corrected sleep cycles, breathwork to detoxify our respiratory health and discipline our thoughts with spirituality and meditation can greatly help towards enriching our mind, body, and soul to be a better version of ourselves.

Experts tell us how each of these practices during the Holy month of Ramadan can be the time of serious health reboot for all.

Reset with right nutrition!

Clinical Nutritionist, Juliet Vinolia gives us a few pointers on detox during Ramadan.

Abstaining from consumption of food and water from dawn to dusk results in following the rules of Intermittent Fasting and improves insulin sensitivity and autophagy. In other words, lesser amount of insulin is released in the pancreas and the liver releases stored glucose to be converted into energy throughout the day. Fasting during the holy month will not only help you clear digestive issues such as gas, bloating, acidity, and high blood sugar, but also clear up your skin and brighten your eyes as skin goes in for rejuvenation.

Fasting during Ramadan is not only healing) but also rejuvenating. When individuals have a balanced meal at the pre-dawn hours before sunrise, they pack the body with correct nutrition. As fasting

encourages the body to consume dead cells (autophagy) and clear up that back log, it also clears the body of dead tissue and paves the way for fresh tissue and cell regeneration.

Healthy Gut microbiome

Juliet adds: “Healthy sustainable weight loss can be achieved through a nutrient-dense diet, ideal fasting hours and adequate sleep. Fasting activates the gut brain axis and the gut microbiome flourishes which has a direct impact on both our mind and body. The neurotransmitters released from our gut calm our nervous system and reduce stress and inflammation in our body. There is ongoing research in the management and prevention of complex neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and other auto immune conditions triggered by inflammation, where a healthy diet with balanced nutrition plays an important therapeutic role.

“A diet rich in fresh, raw fruits and vegetables, seafood, olive oil, nuts while ensuring adequate soluble and insoluble fiber along with probiotic rich fermented foods can help rejuvenate our gut lining helping in nutrition absorption and help repair DHA, prevent mutation and cancer.”

The right nutrition for suhoor and iftar

Balance your proteins, carbohydrates, and fats when you are observing a fast. If you intend your intermittent fasting time to really work for you, make sure you load yourself with the right nutrition during suhoor.

• Opt for healthy cooking styles such as steaming, broiling, baking, and grilling. Portion control, slow eating with chewing every morsel for at least 30 times, will help in assimilating nutrition and also in weight loss.

• For proteins you could have an omelet made with a spray of olive

oil and loaded with veggies, mushroom and low-fat cheese which is rich in proteins, minerals and health fat and carbs.

• A steel rolled oats porridge with low-fat milk, soaked overnight with fruits such as berries, soaked nuts, chia seeds will not only be a source of complex carbs, but also provide high fiber; nuts such as walnuts are a rich source of calcium, magnesium, and potassium. The overnight soaking action makes the oats rich in probiotics, to help your gut bacteria and help you maintain a steady blood sugar.

• Include, other food items such as avocado, pomegranate seeds and a glass of fresh coconut water, Laban. These will take care of the trace minerals and keep you well hydrated.

• During iftar, end your fast with a couple of dates which are a good source of iron, fiber and complex carbohydrates that will stabilize your blood sugar and have a clear vegetable soup, chicken, or bone broth for hydration. Avoid fruit juices and carbonated drinks that can spike blood sugar.

• For dinner opt or grilled or steamed fish, salad, some cooked vegetables and one whole grain dish made from either brown rice, millets, or whole wheat. Cut back on high sugar desserts.

Quench your Thirst!

Reboot with ample hydration. Water is an essential elixir for the human body which is made up of

60 per cent water. Experts say we lose fluids through our normal metabolic processes of urination, sweating, breathing etc. In normal circumstances, one needs to replenish lost fluids by drinking at least 8-10 glasses of water throughout the day. During Ramadan it is essential not to undergo a electrolyte balance by having plenty of fluids during suhoor and at iftar to get through the day. Electrolytes are important minerals in your blood such as sodium, calcium, potassium, magnesium that give off an electrical charge when dissolved in blood or urine. They are found in the extra and intracellular fluids in our body. An electrolyte balance keeps us alert and lucid in comprehension and understanding as well as preventing muscle cramps, even coma. During Ramadan by abstaining from excessive sweet drinks and introducing plenty of plain water, clear soups, water rich fruits and vegetables during the non-fasting hours, one can replenish sodium, potassium, magnesium, and other salts.

Be in sync with your circadian rhythms!

During the Holy month what many people often disrupt is the sleep cycle. This in turn impacts our circadian rhythms and metabolism.

37 Mar/Apr 2024

Our circadian rhythm refers to our natural biological clock that is influenced by sunrise (light) and sun set (darkness). As human beings our bodies are programmed to be active during the day and rest during night. Typically, the body goes through anabolism, metabolism, and catabolism phases. So, we eat and are active during the day, deriving physical and mental energy through nutrition, physical activity, and an active thinking process. Once it’s bedtime, we unwind, give the body time to rest and recover and that is the period when a lot of repair and rejuvenation processes take place internally.

Adults are required to maintain a stable and regular circadian rhythm to have a robust metabolism. During the Holy month, when you rise before dawn and have a full meal and are active, make sure to catch eight hours of sleep through the night. This would mean, have a light iftar meal to end the fast at sunset, followed by a balanced, nutritious meal at dinner and retire by 10 pm to be able to get up pre-dawn. Whatever deficit there is in the eight hours of rest can be compensated for with short intervals of power napping through the day.

Thought and mind control.

Negativity has the power to deplete your energy, raise your cortisol levels, result in stress that has a profound impact on your digestion, sleep, and its psychosomatic impact can trigger chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, acne, obesity and the like.

Regulate your thoughts and build a positive and optimistic eco system in your mind that will in turn have a salubrious impact on your physical, mental and emotional health. During the Holy month, as you fast,

conserve your mental health by not subscribing to thought of anger, disappointment, despondency, and bitterness. Slowing down the pace of life, finding time to meditate, detach and focus on your inner world, can help you regulate negativity and thereby lower cortisol and other stress hormones.

Breathwork

Breathing on the face of it seems like a simple process of inhalation and exhalation. We inhale oxygen and exhale Co2. However, we have several different kinds of breath when we are fearful, nervous, angry, stressed out and calm. When we have stress, anger, fear or any other negativity our breathing becomes fast and shallow which is not advisable for health. When we are fearful, nervous, stressed out or angry, the body goes into a fight or flight mode releasing a large amount of cortisol hormone.

When we regulate our breathing, in other words, look to slow down the pace, breathe deeply, hold the breath and exhale slowly, we naturally calm our mind. Practicing breathwork for even 15- 30 minutes, especially during the holy month,

can tremendously help in calming you down and reducing the level of cortisol secretion in your body. The way you go about this is - follow the 4-6-8-6 formula in breathing. Inhale slowly and deeply for four counts, pushing your stomach out as you taken in oxygen, hold for a count of six and exhale slowly emptying out your lungs, pulling in your stomach to the count of 8. Once you have emptied out your breath, repeat the pattern. Inhalation, breath holding, to deep exhalation and then holding breath to a count of six to build up a CO2 level temporarily in blood improves inhalation of oxygen. Repeat this pattern of slow breathing. Practicing this pattern of breathing even for 15 minutes can help lower cortisol, improve blood pressure, your moods and make you calmer.

A complete detoxification can reboot our mind, body, and soul, help us pause and shed the excessive build up of fat, toxic emotions and tune our impaired metabolism. It is akin to re-tuning a musical instrument for an optimum result. H

The magic of Intermittent Fasting

You can witness cellular regeneration and optimum health with improved insulin sensitivity and better glucose management with Intermittent fasting. The Holy month of Ramadan supports a unique form of Intermittent fasting with a fast of 14 hours or more and a window of eating 8-10 hours in a 24-hour cycle.

40 Mar/Apr 2024

What is intermittent fasting?

Intermittent fasting is a process where one prolongs the window between the last consumed meal and the next one giving the body time to rest and burn fat.

The Japanese cell biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi, who won the Nobe Prize for medicine in 2016, first discovered the miraculous autophagy of cells triggered by long hours of fasting.

Ohsumi discovered that when our body is in fasting mode for a long period, it triggers autophagy, a process where the body turns to its dead tissue and cells and devours these in absence of food thereby housekeeping at the cellular level, regulating metabolism, and giving space for healing and rejuvenation.

That sudden burst of energy and focus and a glow to the skin after fasting is the rejuvenating impact of autophagy on us at a cellular level.

Nutritionists point out that with a reduced window for eating between sunset and dawn, people experience the depletion of glycogen stores in the liver, their Body Mass Index falls, and they experience fat loss. If done correctly with the right choice of foods during the eating window and a combination of light exercise and breathing, Ramadan can help people reboot themselves physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and reset the body to optimum benefits.

David Sinclair, longevity researcher and expert at Harvard, and author of the book Lifespan states that among the four factors that impact longevity the main ones are calorie restriction, food quality, and exercise.

Doctors studying the impact of Intermittent Fasting on the human body point out that it not only increases cell survival rate, it enhances metabolic pathways with better glucose and cholesterol maintenance), increase

mitochondrial function and energy production, and improves brain function.

How to get optimum results during Ramadan

Intermittent Fasting is a way of calorie restriction and the smaller window one has to consume food the lesser food will be consumed. So in a dawn to dusk fast, make sure to eat wholesome proteins, dense carbohydrates and healthy fats, as well as get good hydration that holds you up well during the fasting period.

Shop for organic, fresh wholesome products, focussing on greens, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds

Keep your window of having food for four hours. During suhoor, have a well-balanced nutritious meal during the pre-dawn hours hydrate well and that will carry you through the day. End your fast with a dates, nuts, clear soup and water. During dinner time, start with a large garden salad, including grilled and steamed meat or fish in your meal, restrict desserts to healthier choices of those that are non-fried, non-dairy and have organic sugar substitutes such as stevia.

Try and not be awake through the night as lack of sleep as disruption of sleep interferes with the body’s healing mechanism and metabolism. By sleeping in the night, one will also eliminate the urge to binge. Your next pre-dawn meal for suhoor should have ample gap after the dinner.

Try and do some deep breathing, meditation, and light exercises in the gap between the time you end fast and dinner. That will help you recalibrate a sluggish metabolism. Deep breathing will help lower cortisol and other stress hormones and have a calming impact on your mind and body. This aids a better metabolism and weight loss. H

In conversation with Roxanna Jaffer

A passionate catalyst for change, author, CEO of Sovereign Hotels Ltd and Resident Director of Holiday Inn, Barsha, philanthropist and a humanitarian, Roxanna Jaffer talks to Health demystifying nuances of life and her journey described in her book, Why I did not Die. A full life fraught with so many vicissitudes of pain – both physical and emotionalthat chiselled her into the consummate writer and people’s person she has become today.

Q: At the end of every chapter, you have included a section on the lessons from each of the incidents. What are the most seminal lessons?

Whilst recuperating and reflecting on the incident, whether it was in hospital or at home, I had many realizations. About five or six major realizations per incident. Lessons I gleaned about life, people, pain, humility, forgiveness, divinity, the need to live one’s life for others …. Aah, about 50 learnings which I share in my book as self-help tips for all my readers.

For me, each incident is very important. The first among these I learnt the hard way is “Melancholy is but a sin”. I learnt not to wallow in self-pity, cry over proverbial spilt milk. I realized if I were to be sad about what had happened to me, I would never be able to get out of that feeling. As my husband Sadru says, do not have any gremlins in your mind. I do not let negativity take a home in my mind.

The second lesson is “Life is a gift.

Only I could make the best of every pitfall/ calamity. After the first incident of burns, when I emerged from a 10-day coma, I realized, oh my God, I’m alive. Although I had no idea then I was in coma for so long. I realized everything occurs only according to God’s will. We are only actors or puppets without strings where someone else is running the show. We are being pulled. Alhamdullilah the strings were being pulled for me to continue living by God.

Another vital learning was forgiveness. I have named that learning as a Shakespearean dilemma, ‘To forgive or not to forgive’. I was 50 when I forgave my birth mother for that one incident, which readers will learn about by reading the book. When I did forgive her, a huge weight was lifted from my shoulder, my heart. It also lifted the dark cloud that I may have had in my soul.

Q: What is your take on the power of collective prayer? In the first incident, when I woke

up after a 10-day coma, I was surrounded by the beautiful girls of my grandmother’s orphanage singing devotional bhakti songs, praying for my life. I was from Kenya and these young, mostly Hindu girls didn’t know me at all. However, their piety together created such a powerful energy that I believed their joint prayers raised me from the dead.

In the last episode at the Al Zahra Hospital, where had I not undergone the emergency surgery, I would not have survived, as confirmed by my surgeon. Yet I believe I was saved duet to a Khatam Qur’an dua offering by a Pakistani friend through a group of 100 children together in Islamabad in my name. Imagine the power of this. In both instances, these young children were giving a part of themselves through selfless collective prayers. People go to the temple or the mosque to pray because praying in unison has a powerful impact.

Q: What is your view on virtues versus values.

I’ve often wondered about the true nature of virtue. Is it God given or is it

46 Mar/Apr 2024

something one learns from parents. Is virtue learned from religion or from culture?I think whatever values you imbibe, each one of those is important. In fact, on page 64, I could not help but question my soul. I learned that gratitude and selflessness were the highest virtues for me. Today, I am living in a state of gratitude. Thankfulness, Shukrana is the virtue or value I am living with every day.

Q : You have referred to the teachings Gita, the Bible, the Qur’an. can you share your thoughts?

My own understanding of religion is imbibed from teachings of all. My own mother was from India and although a Muslim, her spiritual consciousness was influencedby the Hindu ethos. She would sing bhajans (devotional songs), tell me about her ideologies of Krishna. I frequented the Swaminarayan Temple in Mombasa fascinated by worshippers during the arti, going into a trance. I have held their hand to feel that divinity. Then in my religion, I was influenced by devotional songs written by Pirs called Ginans. Therefore, growing up, I was very conscious of all faiths, which led me to learn from all scriptures. I discerned a single universal truth in all scriptures – the oneness of humanity. This learning was emphasized with the incidents in my life, bringing close to the divine.

Q: Is true maternal love possible only through birth parents or can your adoptive parents be equally strong in their love? Well, I can say now, that my birth mother in giving me away, gave up a part of herself and she parted with me, with love to someone she completely trusted. The love of my adoptive mother was expressed when I fell off the roof of my school in Mombasa. I was partly paralyzed, and she put her heart and soul into nursing me back to health. Could this be an esoteric reason why my birth mom gave me away? The

incident is proof that motherly love is possible from adoptive parents.

“Not from your womb but definitely, of the same rib. Waking up in the wee hours to check if I'm still in the crib. Nursing my accidents and fall, from the roof, selflessly, Kesar milk, with lessons of love about humanity…. Indeed, a role model, this Alma Mater.”

Q: How did you deal with the trauma of the injuries?

Of course, it was difficult. Trauma changes you. It impacted me emotionally, spiritually, and indeed physically. I had many realizations and have become the person that I am today. It taught me to forgive, to not be sad, to know about true love, to understand about giving to humanity.

However, you must have discerned that I am the eldest of a total of six siblings -four of us in my birth mother’s family and two from my adoptive family. By default, I was the eldest of six. They all looked up to me. I was their role model and in no way I could shatter their belief in me. I learnt to be able to absorb all the pain and trauma, so that they wouldn’t hear of it.

The book helped me sublimate by trauma. We are all learning along the path of life. As the Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh, elucidates in this verse: “Nothing is born, nothing dies. Nothing to release. Samsara is nirvana…”

Q: Please share the work you are currently doing.

A: I am a sustainability trailblazer and have outlined a strategic roadmap that drives innovation in aiding humanity.

The first initiative that I took up was to mentor youth who were unsure of the path to get into business, were scared to go up the corporate rung because they had no wherewithal to

live their dreams. When I mentored successfully, I realized I had a knack. Along with three of my friends I embarked upon a vocational project in New Delhi and in the Hunza Province of Pakistan. Both places their literacy rates were high but these youngsters with graduate degrees were in menial jobs. I founded a not-for-profit NGO called An Advent for Building Human Capital (ABC) to give this youth an opportunity to build their place in society

Today, when I see some of them (two people I trained, owning a 12-room hotel in Hunza), I cannot describe the sense of fulfilment I have.

At my workplace, we have over 26 nationalities working in complete harmony. I wanted them to inculcate working in complete harmony and inculcate a sense of helping others in the community in their spare time after work. One idea was to send them to local hospitals, pay a visit to patients and just hold their hands, to show them love and give warmth. Many asked me how this would help. I explained it was an action of giving hope of life and healing through energy transfer. The idea was a great success. Today several ex-employees tell us they are engaged in helping the poor, the sick and the needy in their own hometowns.

This idea of standing up for another life has been so well ingrained. In the end it’s about a small, simple, everyday fact of life – of every human being connected to another.

Further, my employees have started a new initiative: ‘Eat what you plate. Plate what you eat.’ I feel I have been a catalyst in this. Each day they recount as a notice of kilos wasted which could have fed many hungry in the world. A great teaching for our hotel dining guests! An indirect teaching on conscientiousness about reducing food wastage.

47 Mar/Apr 2024

Q: Tell us about your collaboration on United Nation’s Hunger project during Ramadan.

We have partnered with the United Nation World Food Program’s campaign to eradicate poverty and to feed hungry children in war or climate-ravaged zones.

We have an initiative, ‘Embrace Ramadan’ running since 2016 where we pledge to feed four

Why I did not Die

For aeons, philosophers, seers, and mystics have contemplated upon Death, calling it an integral part of life, a culmination, an eternal disruption that gives way to the open vista of eternity and infinity, something we are unable to see.

Until, we have someone like Dubaibased litterateur, Roxana Jaffer. A multi-faceted persona she is the poet, author, businesswoman and above all a humanist, who narrates a transformational account of her journey through life where she courted death no less than eight times.

hungry in the world with every iftar that is consumed during our All-Day Dining. To date we have supported 546, 060 hungry globally.

With these and many other initiatives I really hope I have inculcated a way of happiness in others. This is therapeutic and helps combat deep trauma from incidents of with magnitude of pain. The incidents that I experienced caused intense pain, both physical and

any fear of falling, pain, dying, because I was able to integrate the learning from each within me. These incidents define who I am today. When people are confronted by such crises they need to seize the bull by its horns, accept and assimilate it within oneself. My motto in life is Que Sera Sera.” Indeed, that is what the book conveys.

Scintillating narrative

The book is not a parable, or allegory or fable. It is hard as nails account of her dance with death.

emotional, which was mitigated by making a concerted effort to bring happiness in the lives of other people.

that most of us lead. For Roxanne every single day has been a gift, and her life has been punctuated with such epiphanies where people around her marvelled at the way she dealt with it. If you look closely at the episodes one can point out that she had an encounter with all five primordial elements –earth, ether, fire, water, and space- and in every episode, there was always divine intervention that restored status quo in her life! It is not surprising that Roxana has been called the miracle child by her friends.

Roxana’s book “Why I did not die” does not question the Almighty. In fact, the title is a rhetorical statement, an acceptance or acknowledgement of destiny where she was a hair’s breadth away from death and yet lived. Every experience brought her numerous lessons in its wake.

Defined by life’s experiences.

Speaking to Health, Roxana elaborated, “I never thought of these incidents as those evoking fear or anger. Despite my experiences, I never suffered from

From being scalded by a cauldron of boiling oil which triggered a 10-day coma, to going through the trauma of abduction, adoption, plunging down 20 meters that left her paralyzed, to life altering automobile accident and an ice cave mishap in the caves of Austria that required her to be air-lifted for surgery in an ambulance to UK, to a drowning encounter in the Indian ocean and the near fatal brush with death in the emergency room of a hospital with lifesaving surgery… there is never a dull moment in the book.

A miracle child

It’s not a mundane, everyday life

Roxana message for readers. “Most people fear meeting their end. Life is just one little dot in our journey to eternity. I had written a poem about this called Shoonya or Zero which signifies infinity. People need to experience real bliss, beyond the momentary pleasures. I have glimpsed that, and I think this should be the eternal quest for all.”

A must-read

What is truly endearing about the searing honesty of the narrative. The author’s voice is that of forbearance, wisdom, patience, and humility without a tinge of sadness or regret or ‘why me’ questions. Every chapter is framed by the learnings from each episode. It feels like the Pilgrim’s Progress chronicle where every little incident has a wider allegorical implication with a rich tapestry of profound takeaways. To say that the book is unputdownable is therefore, no exaggeration. H

Ask the Experts

From pediatric questions to general medical queries, our panel of experts are here to answer your questions.

Q: Elaborate on pneumonia and at what stage it requires critical care. What are the chances of full recovery?

Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the lungs of patients causing infection in the air sacs (alveoli), resulting in pus build up. This usually happens in the winter season and is a community acquired condition where the patient might catch the microbial infection from the workplace, school or any other public place. Patients will experience cough, fever, breathlessness, and the severity of the symptoms will determine the course of treatment. We evaluate and determine the severity as per certain scales and scores. Once a case is determined as mild, patients are sent home with an oral medication course to continue treatment. In cases that are more than mild the patient is required to seek admission to the general ward and is kept under observation in hospital. Severe cases require Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission.

There is a CURB- 65 score system with five elements. C stands for confusion or altered mind status, referring to the mental confusion of patient, U stands for high levels of urea, it’s a blood test indicator for renal function; R – Respiratory or breathing rate, if exceeding 30 for instance,

B stands for blood pressure if the systolic is lower than 90 and 65 stands for the age of the patient. If the patient is aged 65 or above, he or she is at high risk. All these factors are considered. The score is between 0-5 with each factor having a score of 1 on a scale of 0-5. If the patient scores between 0-1, he or she can be treated at home; if the score is between if its 2 or 3, patient requires admission in regular room, and if the score is 4-5 patient requires admission in the ICU. This is co-related to the pneumonia severity index. This too has five categories defining low, moderate, or high-risk patients. High risk is those with a score of 130 or above. In this assessment we consider the gender of the patient, the case history of the patient, if he has COPD or any chronic lung, heart, kidney, neurological or neoplastic disease history, we consider this along with the other symptoms the patient presents with. The patient is admitted into the intensive care unit and the treatment protocol is started. The assessment is done case to case depending on how the patient responds to treatment.

The chances of recovery are good, and we have categories of fast responders, moderate responders, slow responders and the last category of patients who might not respond to treatment and might succumb to the condition. The last category is a very small percentage.

Q: What are the key pediatric concerns that every parent should be aware of, for children in the age group of 1-5 years?

As your child grows, it’s crucial to stay informed about their health and well-being. Here are some common concerns that mothers should be mindful of:

Nutritional Challenges: From picky eaters to poor eating habits, nutrition-related issues can impact your child’s growth and development. Understand how to address these concerns.

*Developmental Milestones: Keep an eye on developmental milestones such as establishing good eye contact, beginning to speak with a few words, and progressing steadily between 15 to 18 months of age.

*Bowel Movements: Changes in bowel habits, like constipation, can indicate underlying issues that need attention. Monitor your child’s bowel movements.

*Energy Levels and Activity: Lack of energy and reduced activity levels could be signs of nutritional deficiencies such as anemia. Ensure your child has a balanced diet.

* Gross Motor Development: Encouraging and monitoring your child’s gross motor skills development, like walking, climbing stairs, etc. is vital for their physical growth and coordination.

*Persistent Fevers: Fevers persisting above 37.8 degrees Celsius for more than 48 hours warrant attention from a pediatrician.

By staying vigilant and informed about these common pediatric concerns, mothers can play a proactive role in safeguarding their child’s health and well-being during these formative years.

Q: What should be the essential guide to daily skincare routine for every woman?

A stellar skincare routine isn’t just a luxury—it’s a necessity. Here’s a basic skincare routine that promises to rejuvenate and protect your skin.

Morning Marvels

Cleanser: Kickstart your day with a gentle cleanser that respects your skin’s natural pH balance. Washing your face helps remove any overnight buildup and preps your skin for the day ahead.

Toner: A quick sweep of a hydrating toner, like rose water, helps refine pores and restore pH levels, making your skin receptive to further care.

Essence: Here’s where the magic happens. Essences such as the Missha Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence is a cult favorite for a reason. Packed with fermented yeast extract, this essence delivers moisture, improves texture, and enhances the overall clarity of the skin.

Moisturizer: Hydration is key. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin that bind moisture to the skin, keeping it plump.

Sunscreen: A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher shields your skin from harmful UV rays, preventing premature aging.

Makeup Remover: An oil-based cleanser or micellar water works wonders in dissolving makeup without stripping your skin.

Cleanser & Toner: Repeat your morning ritual to wash away the day’s grime and rebalance your skin.

Bedtime routine: Whether it’s addressing fine lines with retinol or combating dark spots with vitamin C; pick a hero.

Moisturizer or Night Cream: Opt for a richer night cream to support your skin’s natural repair process.

Incorporate a gentle exfoliator weekly to remove dead skin cells and indulge in a mask tailored to your skin’s needs. With these steps, your skin will not only feel cherished but will also reflect its health and vitality, making every day a good skin day.
