This year also witnessed the Gulf Medical University Convocation, where over 500 bright minds were celebrated for their academic achievements. I am delighted to announce that Thumbay Group has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sharjah Healthcare City to establish the first private Thumbay Psychiatric and Rehabilitation Hospital in Sharjah. Could AI Be Your Next Therapist?

As AI brings about dramatic changes to healthcare, experts weigh in on the extent to which technology can be used in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions, while calling upon regional governments in the GCC to update policies and regulatory frameworks to keep pace. Mental health struggles are more common than many of us think, affecting millions around the world. The pandemic only magnified the silent crisis, with more people than ever facing emotional and psychological challenges.

A 2019 estimate by the World Health Organisation (WHO) indicated that around 12% of the world population suffered from some sort of mental or psychological problem that needed attention. Recent statistics show that the number has continued to rise. While the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a sharp increase, the numbers have kept growing in recent years.

Within the Middle East, however, the numbers remain much higher than the global average at more than 15%, with an alarmingly high depression and anxietyrelated cases.

The situation is further worsened by the fact that most individuals - a recent study puts it at 70% - facing mental health challenges do not receive adequate treatment. The reasons

range from individuals choosing not to seek help to others avoiding treatment due to the social stigma surrounding mental health. Additionally, many face barriers such as a shortage of qualified professionals and limited medical facilities, particularly in rural areas.

Enter Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the rapid advancement of Large Language Models (LLMs), which, much like in other areas of healthcare, has been addressing key pain points and, in some cases, surpassing human capabilities. Inperson consultations and therapies are fast making way for chat-based interventions.

However, addressing mental health disorders goes far beyond just diagnosis and medication. It involves exploring the complexities of the human mind through psychotherapy, influencing thoughts, emotions and behaviours to foster healing and well-being.

AI Advancements

Misha Akbar, Founder of Sama Health, an online platform for culturally relevant therapy for South Asians in the UAE, terms the evolution of technology and its impact on mental healthcare as simply staggering, especially “starting from the early days of computerised cognitive behavioural therapy programmes to the current use of AI for early detection, diagnosis and management of mental health disorders.”

The most impactful advancement, she argues, is AI’s role in helping therapists analyze data and extend their reach. “The use of AI in brain activity to assist with diagnosis and treatment planning is monumental, promising a critical role in early intervention initiatives and bridging the gap in mental health care,” says Akbar.

When combined with wearable devices, which can track stress levels, share data with primary care providers, and create tailored treatment plans, AI, she notes, has also paved the way for virtual mental health support when human therapists are not immediately available.

The capabilities of LLMs in assessment and intervention have also led to the development of numerous mental health applications, making support more accessible, affordable, scalable, and personalized. Today, AIdriven chatbots are helping tackle the global shortage of mental health professionals by offering 24/7 assistance and extending care to underserved and remote communities. The use of technology has also been instrumental in overcoming cultural, religious and perception-related barriers to mental health care.

Smriti Joshi, Chief Psychologist at Wysa, an AI-powered mental health platform that combines digital support with optional human intervention, says AI has truly democratized mental health as these tools promote inclusivity by providing support in multiple languages. They also function effectively in low-bandwidth settings, making mental health resources accessible to millions.

By offering a private and non-judgemental platform, AI reduces the stigma often associated with seeking help, which is especially important in communities where mental health concerns carry social judgement, says Joshi.

According to her, AI also adapts to local cultural contexts, using relatable metaphors and addressing specific stressors to enhance engagement

Sarmistha Mitra, CEO and Founder of The Wellbeing Sanctuary, which provides solution-focused therapy, both in-person and virtual, says AI technologies are enhancing mental health services by providing accessible and personalized care.

According to her, AI can be instrumental in facilitating better mental health care, particularly by connecting patients with suitable therapists. “By analyzing a patient’s specific needs, preferences and even their communication style, AI can match them with the most appropriate therapist, ensuring a quicker, more tailored connection.”

Discussing some of the local initiatives, Mitra says The Dubai Health Authority introduced ‘Mindspire’, an AI-driven app that analyzes users’ daily voice logs to recommend appropriate therapy and facilitate doctor appointments. Additionally, the Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), she says, has partnered with China’s Infinite Brain Technologies to develop precise digital therapeutics for brain health, aiming to revolutionize treatments for mental disorders.

Broader Reach

As Akbar points out, people can now access support whenever they want in a safe and non-judgmental environment. Several start-ups, she says, are doing groundbreaking AI work for the early detection of mental health issues by analyzing subtle changes in speech patterns and available psychological data. “This is huge as it means we can focus on early detection and intervention of mental health challenges before they spiral,” says Akbar.

Dr. Nawal Yousaf, Founder of London-based Fitra Health, which offers evidence-based self-guided cognitive behavioral therapy programs aimed at improving mental health outcomes for underserved populations, points out that tools for prevention, screening, and treatment are now available thanks to advancements in technology. Fitra Health provides culturally tailored interventions specifically designed for Muslim populations, particularly in the GCC region. The programme adapts therapeutic approaches to align with Islamic values to ensure relevance and resonance within the target demographic.

According to her, AI can identify at-risk individuals by analyzing patterns in language, facial expressions and behavioral data, allowing for timely interventions.

“For example AI-powered technologies like eye tracking systems detect early signs of depression, and then there are also virtual reality platforms to offer simulated therapeutic interventions,” says Dr. Yousaf.

Key Innovations

According to Joshi, one of the most innovative contributions is the use of Virtual Reality. The Virtual Reality Lab at King’s College London, she says, has emerged as a leader in using VR. “Their work spans various conditions and integrates VR with AI, wearable devices and mobile health (mHealth) applications,” she says, adding that their V-NeST therapy targets negative symptoms of schizophrenia, such as social withdrawal and reduced motivation, providing immersive interventions that improve recovery prospects.

Similarly, the Alan Turing Institute in the UK, Dr. Yousaf says, is pioneering AI-driven predictive models for mental health. Their approach, she points out, uses machine learning to analyze routine clinical data and identify individual risks for conditions such as depression and anxiety. “These advancements, along with AI-driven VR therapies for trauma and anxiety and mobile cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) applications, are reshaping mental health care by making it more precise, accessible and personalized,” she adds.

Committed to Adopt

Commenting on the adoption in the region, Dr. Yousaf says there is a growing enthusiasm in the GCC for innovative technologies.

Emirates Health Services (EHS) is at the forefront of this effort, introducing projects such as the Immersive Reality Laboratory for psychological therapy, which uses virtual reality to treat conditions like anxiety, autism-related behavioral issues and internet addiction.

EHS is also advancing AI in healthcare through initiatives such as the AI-based Stroke Recognition Application, which aids in early stroke detection, and the AI-based EEG application for epilepsy diagnosis.

“These technologies are being increasingly integrated into mental health care, offering personalized, real-time treatments and diagnostic support. The region’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge solutions into its healthcare systems aligns with national visions such as the UAE’s Vision 2031,” adds Dr. Yousaf.

According to her, the UAE is at a turning point in harnessing the advancements in AI. However, she argues that much work must be done to create awareness.

Joshi too notes that there is a strong foundation for adopting AI-driven mental health solutions in the GCC but points out that it comes with a mix of opportunities and challenges. High rates of smartphone use, good internet infrastructure and a young, tech-savvy population that is generally open to digital solutions create an environment that can readily support the adoption of AI-based mental health interventions.

However, there are still barriers that need to be addressed such as digital literacy gaps and cultural awareness about mental health.

According to Mitra, despite the availability of AI solutions, a significant portion of the population in the region including many in the UAE may not be fully equipped to utilize them due

policymakers need to focus on, she says, there is an immediate need for the strengthening of data privacy and accessibility laws. “Mental health data must be treated as medical data, as it is just as sensitive. The highest levels of encryption and security must be used,” she says.

Also, not all individuals or caregivers are fully aware of how to effectively use AI tools or understand their potential benefits. Joshi argues that AI can be leveraged and can play a critical role here by helping with psychoeducationproviding accessible information on mental health and guiding people in recognizing symptoms and understanding when to seek further help.

In February 2019, UAE issued Federal Law No 2 of 2019 (Health Data Law), which regulates the use of information technology and communications (ITC) in the healthcare sector.

Saudi Arabia’s Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL), the first comprehensive data privacy law in the Kingdom which became fully enforced from September 2024, aims to regulate the collection, processing, and transfer of personal data in the country. Health data is covered under the ‘Sensitive Data’ category with more stringent guidelines and regulations.

“This kind of support can empower users and their caregivers to make informed decisions and overcome reluctance,” she adds.

Regulatory Assistance

Akbar notes that policy and regulatory frameworks will have a huge role to play in ensuring that appropriate measures are taken when integrating AI into mental health care. Identifying some of the aspects

creating frameworks for AI accountability “Clear guidelines must be established on how AI tools are integrated into mental health, from detection to design, testing and deployment. More importantly, access to the data and its use must be defined clearly. Data must be anonymized to protect individuals’ identities where possible, especially regarding research,” she notes.

Akbar emphasizes the need to garner support for digital mental health platforms through government-led programmes and subsidies, which she argues will make these resources and tools available to all.

Pranav Gupta, Global HeadCommercial & Partnerships at Wysa says governments in the region should encourage the adoption of digital health solutions by integrating AI mental health tools into national healthcare frameworks to complement existing mental health services and scale access.

“Clear guidelines should ensure that AI solutions comply with regional data protection laws such as the

UAE Data Protection Law or Saudi Arabia’s PDPL,” he adds.

Among the other policies, he says, the governments should promote awareness and support campaigns that destigmatize mental health; support multilingual and cultural customization; and incorporate Arabic language and content that aligns with cultural and religious values.

Calling upon the governments to encourage Public-Private Partnerships, Gupta notes that “collaboration between governments, private organisations and healthcare providers can drive the deployment of AI mental health tools in schools, workplaces and public health systems.”

He also calls upon policymakers to facilitate funding or subsidies to ensure that migrant workers and other underserved populations can access mental health solutions, addressing a significant gap in the region. “By prioritizing these changes, the GCC can lead in leveraging AI to address mental health challenges in a culturally relevant and inclusive way,” he adds.

While AI can provide personalized insights, human involvement remains crucial in decision-making, especially for complex mental health issues.

According to Akbar, future advancements must focus on cultural nuances and socioeconomic factors but ultimately AI should and must never replace human therapists; instead, it must complement them. Explainable AI must be used at every stage to inform and educate individuals on how their data will be used, she adds.

AI Concerns

The growing adoption of AI in mental health has raised various questions about algorithmic bias, data privacy and the ethical consequences of replacing human empathy with AI-generated replies.

Dr. Nawal Yousaf, Founder of London-based Fitra Health identifies that one of the major issues is safeguarding sensitive patient data. While AI tools, she says, can process and synthesise vast amounts of personal

information for tailored mental health care, they also create risks of data breaches or misuse.

Algorithmic bias presents another challenge. “If AI systems are trained on biased data, they may perpetuate disparities, disproportionately affecting marginalised groups or exacerbating the stigma surrounding mental health. Policymakers and developers must align on ethical standards to ensure fairness and inclusivity in AI applications,” she adds.

Smriti Joshi, Chief Psychologist at Wysa notes that AI might not have the nuanced judgment of a human therapist, especially during crises or in complex cases.

“AI should always be seen as a complement to human care and not a replacement, particularly for more complex mental health needs,” she adds.

True healing often lies in uncovering the root causes of emotional and psychological distress, and as Sarmistha Mitra, CEO and Founder of The Wellbeing Sanctuary points out, the process of identifying deeprooted issues requires a nuanced understanding of an individual’s history, subconscious patterns and cultural context, which can be challenging for AI. “This makes it difficult for AI to narrow down and address underlying causes effectively, emphasizing the need for a human touch in therapeutic settings,” she says.

“Research consistently shows that virtual therapy, including both human-led and AI-driven approaches, works well for mild to moderate issues like anxiety and depression but struggles when it comes to more complex mental health conditions,” says Joshi.

According to her, one key challenge is the lack of human-like empathy and responsiveness that is often

required for complex trauma or severe mental health crises. “While AI-driven virtual therapists are not yet capable of replacing human therapists for complex cases, they can still serve as an important adjunct,” says Joshi.

The future, she argues, likely lies in hybrid models, where AI augments human therapists rather than replace them, offering scalability and support while ensuring that the nuanced, empathetic human touch remains available for those who need it most. H

Robotic surgery, a marvel of modern medicine, is revolutionizing the way we approach complex procedures. Using roboticassisted systems, surgeons perform intricate operations with greater visualization, advanced dexterity, heightened precision using minimally invasive techniques that mean shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery time. HEALTH takes look at how this transformative technology is becoming the mainstay in the UAE health sector.

When Augustus A*, a 58-yearold chartered accountant was diagnosed with stage One Prostate Cancer, he was devastated, with thoughts of vulnerability and mortality. Luckily for him, a Dubai hospital that offered robotic surgery for prostate removal, under a UK board certified doctor, signed him up. After a few rounds of chemotherapy, Augustus underwent minimally invasive robotic surgery for prostate removal.

All About Robotic Surgery

To put it very simply, robotic surgery refers to intricate surgical procedures carried out using a mechanical arm or arms, controlled by the surgeon, bearing surgical instruments and a camera, especially to avoid the need for large incisions.

Robotic systems like the da Vinci Surgical System, commonly used in many hospitals, are equipped with advanced instruments and a high-definition 3D camera that offers surgeons unparalleled views

of the surgical site. These tools allow for extraordinary precision, making them especially effective in delicate procedures such as prostatectomy, kidney surgeries, and gynecological treatments. The adoption of robotic surgery highlights its myriad benefits: reduced blood loss, less post-operative pain, lower risk of complications, and shorter hospital stays.

As in the case of Agustus, who underwent a robotic radical prostatectomy using the da Vinci system, which allowed the surgeon to precisely excise the cancerous tissue while sparing critical nerves. This nerve-sparing technique preserved the patient’s urinary and sexual functions post-surgery, showcasing the remarkable outcomes possible with robotic intervention.

Benefits of Robotic Radical Prostatectomy over Open Surgery

Leading urologists who use robotic surgery say it has redefined prostate cancer treatment. Elaborating on the benefits of conducting a robotic radical prostatectomy over conventional open surgery, Dr Amer Mousa, Consultant Urologist and Robotic surgeon at Clemenceau Hospital Dubai said, “Robotic radical prostatectomy (RRP), typically performed using systems like the da Vinci robot, offers several advantages over open surgery for prostate cancer. The robotic system provides magnified, high-definition, 3D views of the surgical field, allowing for better identification of anatomical structures. Robotic instruments have greater dexterity and a range of motion beyond that of the human hand, enabling meticulous dissection and suturing. Studies consistently show significantly lower

intraoperative blood loss during robotic prostatectomy compared to open surgery, reducing the need for transfusions. My highest volume after doing more than thousand operations is just 50 ml.”

Dr. Mousa continued, “Robotic surgery involves small incisions, which leads to less scarring and a more cosmetically favorable outcome. Smaller incisions and less tissue trauma result in reduced postoperative pain. The recovery period is shorter, allowing patients to return to normal activities much sooner. All my patients are being discharged within 24 hours This approach decreases the risk of wound infections, hernias, and other complications associated with large open incisions. Robotic surgery allows for precise preservation of the bladder neck and surrounding tissues, which may lead to earlier recovery of continence. This is one of the most important issues which all the patients are concerned about and coming with very positive feedback. The enhanced precision helps with nerve-sparing techniques, potentially improving postoperative erectile function outcomes. I think this is the wonderful positive feedback which I have received from my patients because they feel excellent with this function.” Dr. Mousa concluded that Robotic prostatectomy achieved comparable, if not superior, oncologic outcomes (e.g., positive margin rates) to open surgery due to the surgeon’s ability to perform

precise dissections. “This means excellent outcomes for the patient. Robotic systems provide better ergonomics, reducing surgeon fatigue and potentially enhancing performance during complex and lengthy procedures.”

Insights from UAE’s Leading Hospitals Offering Robotic Surgery

In the region too, there appears to be an uptick in cases of hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and autoimmune thyroid disorders such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease.

According to 2020 statistics presented at the 10th Annual Middle East Otolaryngology Conference in Dubai, around five per cent of the UAE population suffers from thyroid diseases.

According to the National Centre for Biotechnology Information, though a tiny butterfly-shaped gland in our throat, the thyroid is a very important endocrine (hormone-producing) gland, crucial to regulating our metabolism and moods. One the main reasons for rising obesity apart from insulin resistance is an underactive thyroid which in many cases goes undetected for long periods.

The thyroid gland, often described as the body’s metabolic powerhouse, plays a critical role in regulating energy, weight, and overall well-being. When it malfunctions, the effects can be profound, ranging from unexplained weight gain or loss to debilitating fatigue and mood changes. Yet, many women remain undiagnosed due to the subtle onset of symptoms, mistaking them for stress or aging-related changes.

Imbalanced Secretions

GCC Healthcare Gets Mega AI Push

New policies, regulations, and increased private sector involvement are focusing on improving healthcare infrastructure and building new capacities even as fragmented systems, incomplete digitization, and a shortage of skilled data and AI professionals remain across the region.

The healthcare sector in the GCC is experiencing remarkable growth, driven by a strong focus on adopting emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are leading the regional initiatives, with substantial budget allocations and the establishment of new centers. Other GCC nations are also joining the effort, aiming to enhance preventive care and leverage predictive analytics to transform healthcare outcomes across the region.

Healthcare expenditure in the GCC is projected to reach US$ 135.5

billion in 2027, as per a report by Alpen Capital, with growth ranging between 4.4% and 7.4% across the GCC. UAE itself is likely to witness 7.4% CAGR.

New policy initiatives, regulations and private participation aimed at enhancing existing infrastructure as well as building new capacities are taking center stage. There is a strong focus on digitizing electronic medical records, leveraging data analytics, and improving disease management.

Saudi’s Digital Leap

Saudi Arabia is making significant investments to strengthen the technological capabilities of its healthcare system. In 2022, the Kingdom signed an agreement with Orion Health to build the world’s largest health information exchange (HIE) in the country.

The HIE will take data feeds from more than 5,000 governmental and private healthcare providers, covering 32 million people, and with a capacity to grow to more than 50 million. The

initiative aims to create a single, holistic view of every single patient’s medical and care information.

According to a report by McKinsey, in Saudi Arabia digital healthcare could play a vital role in increasing healthcare efficiency and producing better outcomes, unlocking as much as $27 billion by 2030.

Ali Ustun, Partner, McKinsey says AI development efforts rely heavily on large datasets, requiring extensive training and fine-tuning on text, image, or other data types. “Any initiative aimed at consolidating healthcare data at the national level—such as Qatar’s Health Information Exchange (HIE) Hub, Saudi Arabia’s NPHIES platform, or Abu Dhabi’s Malaffi— directly supports the creation and enhancement of AI solutions built on these datasets.

“In addition, national large language model (LLM) initiatives are playing a critical role. These efforts contribute to the development of advanced healthcare AI solutions, further strengthening the region’s capabilities in this domain,” he adds.

UAE’s AI Advancements

In 2020, the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) launched AI-powered preventive healthcare platform dubbed ‘Enayati’ to monitor health indicators and predict any possible health risks that may put patients’ lives at risk.

The collaboration with Cognizant seeks to leverage AI-powered clinical insights and link medical, medications, and diagnostic information to support various use cases, including switch prediction, prescription journey improvements, disease outbreak predictions, and rigorous risk assessments.

Talking about AI adoption in healthcare in the region, Ustun highlights the UAE’s launch of a Center of Excellence for AI, with some of its stated aims being advancing medical technology and enhancing healthcare capabilities through AI-driven analytics and decision-making tools, as a key development.

“This momentum is complemented by a growing emphasis on partnerships with global technology leaders, particularly hyperscalers and developers of large language models (LLMs). These collaborations are essential for driving innovation and ensuring that the region remains at the forefront of AI advancements in healthcare,” says Ustun.

According to him, private hospital networks in the GCC are inherently more flexible when it comes to sourcing the talent needed to develop and deploy AI solutions. “These networks often operate using well-established hospital information systems that consolidate data across their entire network, making it easier to integrate AI-driven clinical or administrative solutions into their platforms.

However, despite these advantages, he argues that there has not yet been a significant difference in the deployment of AI-driven solutions between private and public healthcare institutions in the GCC.

Key Challenges

One potential challenge to AI adoption in the GCC healthcare sector, he says, is the fragmented structure of its healthcare systems, which results in dispersed and inconsistent health data. The lack of comprehensive, high-quality data platforms poses a challenge in scaling AI adoption and realizing its full potential impact.

“One key issue is the incomplete digitization of healthcare providers— many hospitals and clinics have yet to fully implement electronic medical record (EMR) systems to capture all patient encounter data.”

According to him, there are promising initiatives addressing these challenges. Terming Qatar’s National Health Information Exchange Hub as a significant progress, he says Saudi Arabia’s NPHIES platform too aims to consolidate provider and payor activities, enhancing clinical services and claims processing.

Similarly, Abu Dhabi’s Malaffi, the emirate-level health information exchange platform, he says, aims to improve data consolidation and accessibility.

Another challenge, according to him, is the relatively younger maturity or absence of comprehensive national insurance schemes in these countries. This, he argues, limits the availability of claims data, a critical resource commonly used in more developed healthcare markets. “Furthermore, proper data management practices, which are essential for establishing robust data governance, safety, and security measures, are still in their nascent stages,” he argues.

The shortage of skilled data and AI professionals across the region too remains a significant obstacle.

“There are many challenges around sourcing and deploying talent quickly, further complicating efforts to scale AI adoption effectively in the healthcare sector,” says Ustun.

The healthcare industry, he says, typically falls behind other sectors in adopting the latest technological advancements. “This is partly because healthcare is a highly complex industry with specific requirements for data standards, interoperability, and governance,” says Ustun, adding that AI implementation can be improved through introducing targeted mandates and incentive programs, such as those linked to insurance and value-based payment mechanisms. Combating Cervical Cancer

While the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) causes six different kinds of cancer, Cervical Cancer (CC) caused by it is one of the major concerns. As we observe the Cervical Cancer awareness month, it is important to know that nearly 99 per cent of Cervical Cancers are linked to persistent infection by HPV.

It is also important to remind all that this is perhaps the only cancer that can be eradicated with primary intervention such as screening and vaccination something that the World Health Organization (WHO) has resolved to do by 2030. As per Global Cancer statistics, CC is currently, the fourth most common cancer in women with 660,000 new cases and 350,000 deaths due to it reported in 2022. There is plenty that can be done with education, screening and early diagnosis. Precious lives can be saved.

Early Intervention

Take the case of Tina* a housewife from Abu Dhabi. It was just another normal day when Tina, a 39-yearold mother of two, discovered that she was bleeding even though it was not the time of her periods. Deciding to consult a doctor if it recurred, she went about her work. But when it happened again a couple of days later, a worried Tina scheduled a consultation with her gynecologist who advised a full check-up.

The results revealed abnormal changes in her cervix, prompting her doctor to recommend further tests.

A Pap smear followed by a biopsy confirmed early-stage cervical cancer. Thanks to early detection and prompt treatment, Tina’s prognosis was excellent.

Today, she is not only cancerfree but also an advocate for cervical cancer awareness.

Tina’s story highlights the importance of routine screenings, which can save lives by detecting cervical cancer in its earliest stages. Yet, despite being one of the most preventable cancers, cervical cancer remains a global health concern.

The Nitty Gritty

Cervical cancer develops in the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It is primarily caused by persistent infection with certain types of HPV, a common sexually transmitted infection. While most HPV infections resolve on their own, some high-risk strains can lead to cervical cancer if left unchecked.

Speaking to Health, Ms Aisha Mulla, Director of Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP), UAE, that is actively involved in the extending support to all cancer patients said, “Cervical Cancer progresses slowly and is one of most preventable

cancers. Proper education, regular screening and vaccinations against HPV are our best defenses.”

The Role of Vaccine in Cancer Prevention

The introduction of the HPV vaccine has been a game-changer in cervical cancer prevention. The vaccine is most effective when administered before the onset of sexual activity, typically between the ages of 9 and 14.

Dr Amala Khopkar Nazareth, pioneering obstetrician and gynecologist at the Prime Healthcare Group, emphasizes, “Studies show that the HPV vaccine can prevent up to 90% of cervical cancer cases caused by high-risk HPV strains. It’s a simple step with far-reaching benefits.”

Routine Pap smears and HPV tests are critical in detecting precancerous changes in cervical cells. Guidelines recommend pap smears every three years for women aged 21-29; and Pap smear combined with HPV testing every five years for women aged 30-65.

Dr Amala further adds, “Regular screenings can identify abnormalities long before they develop into cancer. Women need to prioritize these check-ups, even if they feel healthy.”

While HPV is the leading cause, other factors can increase cervical cancer risk, including smoking, longterm use of oral contraceptives, and a weakened immune system. Quitting

smoking, practicing safe sex, and maintaining a healthy diet can lower risk.

Symptoms

Cervical cancer often shows no symptoms in its early stages. As it progresses, women may experience:

Unusual vaginal bleeding (between periods, after intercourse, or post-menopause).

Pelvic pain or discomfort during intercourse.

Persistent vaginal discharge with an unusual odor or appearance.

Diagnostic Tests

Once abnormalities are detected, further diagnostic tests help determine the presence and extent of cervical cancer. These may include:

Colposcopy: A closer examination of the cervix using a special magnifying instrument.

Biopsy: Removal of a small tissue sample for analysis.

Cervical Cancer in the UAE: Bridging Gaps

The UAE has played a very proactive role in creating awareness, screening and preventive programs for Cervical Cancer. Enumerating the proactiveness of the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHaP), Dr Husain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Ondersecretary for Public Health at MOHAP while thanking WHO for the honor pointed out that since 2018, his ministry had included the HPV vaccine for females in the national immunization program and

recently expanded the program to also include male students up to the age of 13-14 years. The free vaccination drive and subsidized screening programs have helped. Another study conducted by the Burjeel Cancer Institute added that owing to the result-oriented approach the number of Cervical Cancer cases in the UAE had dropped from 81 in 2015 to 36 in 2017. Latest statistics still must be compiled but the trend has been of rapid decimation of Cervical Cancer cases.

“I was only 27 years old when I was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer, Stage 3 in September 2022. That day is deeply etched in my memory. I was experiencing heavy vaginal bleeding, and it was not my time for menstrual period. I was confused, scared, and devastated when I underwent screening and given the verdict.

“As young girl with no background or knowledge of what was about the unfold, the only thing I could think of was my sibling back in the Philippines as I was the sole earner of the family. My mother passed on eight years ago prior to my diagnosis in 2022 and that was only a strong reminder of how tough this battle would be.

A Harrowing Phase

“I braced myself for the challenge ahead. I was lucky to have the support of my friends in the UAE who stood by like a rock, helping me hold myself together, holding my hands through the treatment cycles and standing my me through the long road to recovery.

“I underwent 27 Radio Therapies and five chemotherapies at the Advanced Care Oncology Centre (ACOC) followed by Branchy Therapy.

“It was a difficult time and my body was weak. I had no energy to go to work. Thank God for my compassionate friend Luisa Mendonza who took care of me during the treatment period, I was able to sail through it.

Streamlining health insurance with AI and Machine Learning innovations is not a conjectural dream but already being implemented as new technology digitizes the health insurance management systems.

The health insurance landscape in the UAE is rapidly changing with the impact of AI and other technological innovations introduced recently. This will streamline insurance coverage for the end user, the systems in place responsible for speeding up approvals as well the implementation from third party organizations marketing a plethora of insurance policies representing various insurance providers.

In December 2024, UAE’s Ministry of Human Resources (MOHRE) announced a mandatory health insurance basic cover for all private sector employees and domestic workers who joined the workforce from January 1, 2024. As announced by Dr Mohammad Salem Al Olama, undersecretary of UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), this new insurance cover is going to be linked to the integrated digital healthcare system, the Riayati platform which is part of UAE’s National Unified Medical Record (NUMR) and the population health management projects. The health ministry and the UAE government is taking bold steps to integrate health insurance system

with the national healthcare system digitally which will help further the cause of an integrated healthcare delivery system in UAE.

As of now, the health insurance sector has absorbed digitization, machine learning and AI into its back-office systems as well as in interface with clients.

Speaking to HEALTH, Hitesh Motwani, Chief Marketing and Digital Transformation Officer at InsuranceMarkets.ae shared the way the insurance sector including their organization has taken to integration of their back-office operations with Generative AI.

Current Adoption: While full-scale implementation of generative AI is not yet widespread, several insurers and healthcare administrators are exploring its potential through pilot projects. Motwani further pointed out that there was immense potential for expansion in this area. “As the technology matures, its adoption is expected to grow, transforming not only the back-office workflows but also the overall customer experience in the insurance and healthcare sectors.”

Besides back-office systems integration, AI and Machine Learning software is being used widely in detecting fraud, waste and abuse in insurance claims. The health insurance data base is huge and it becomes manually impossible for insurance staff to process claims smoothly while being able to detect any phony claims.

However, with new tools and software based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, insurers are finding it possible to combat health insurance fraud. The advanced analytics software allows insurances to deeply analyze each case study, look at the history of illnesses of a patient, their claims pattern and identify if there is fraudulent activity. Now, this is being applied to random cases. As research evolves, advanced and sophisticated software systems based on AI algorithms are being introduced which will help largely eliminate fraud or at least help the insurer flag a trend, say market pundits. The MENA region is witnessing a significant rise in the consumption of chronic medications, particularly for conditions such as hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes. This growth is attributed to advances in healthcare systems, including improved disease awareness, highly qualified medical staff and the availability of effective treatment options.

Cinfa, with its strategic focus on expanding its presence in the region, is set to benefit from a projected market growth of more than 7% in the next five years. The company has invested heavily in a new NEO plant designed to double production capacity and introduce Industry 4.0 technologies. In addition, Cinfa is increasing its R&D efforts in key therapeutic areas such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and neurology. What emerging trends related to chronic diseases are you witnessing in the region? What are the factors contributing to the same?

The consumption of chronic medications in the MENA region has seen significant growth in recent years, particularly for conditions such as hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes, where both diagnosis and treatment rates have increased. This outcome can be attributed to the advances in the region’s healthcare systems, including disease awareness campaigns carried out by the health authorities, highly qualified medical staff, excellent hospital management systems and the availability of a wide range of effective healthcare solutions.

What is the current state of the drug market in the region, and how is it projected to grow in the coming years?

Over the next five years, Cinfa expects a market increase of more than 7% in the region,

driven mainly by improved regulatory processes, better patient access schemes and growth in healthcare infrastructure and private sector participation.

To achieve this, we have increased our development, production and distribution capacity with a new manufacturing plant called NEO, which Cinfa calls a Smart Factory - a facility based on the concept of Industry 4.0: a facility in which all processes are integrated, digitized and automated according to the needs of each drug and its different manufacturing stages.

We believe that harmonizing administrative, quality and clinical requirements across the GCC countries as well as standardized evaluation timelines would be helpful.

The production processes are organized in a vertical format so that the circulation of materials is carried out from top to bottom between the different existing plants.

This would avoid transfers within the same plant to a large extent and ensure the containment of the processes, which are carried out in a closed circuit, and with separate flows at all times so that the different drugs or materials never come into contact with each other.

Tell us about Cinfa’s growing business in the region and your future plans.

Cinfa has been achieving consistent growth in private sales across the MENA region in the past few years, driven by remarkable success in areas such as cardiovascular, antiinflammatory and anti-infective therapies. Cinfa’s products in areas such as neuropsychiatry, men’s healthcare and gastrointestinal therapy are on the rise and are expected to play a key role in driving corporate growth in the upcoming years. Cinfa’s private sales in the MENA region will exceed $40 million in 2024. Besides, Cinfa has already partnered with the public sector in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, where Cinfa brands have been widely used in many government hospitals in both countries.

Our new NEO plant for drug development, production and distribution is a cutting-edge facility, backed by more than $44 million in investment and four years of dedicated effort. This advanced facility in Spain will double our production capacity to 200 million drugs per year.

Could you share some of the new R&D areas and innovations Cinfa is focusing on?

One of Cinfa’s primary R&D focuses is type 2 diabetes mellitus, a highly prevalent condition that has been on the rise globally in recent years and is linked to high morbidity and mortality. We are actively working within two key therapeutic groups: DPP-4 inhibitors and SGLT2 inhibitors.

Cinfa is actively working towards localizing product manufacturing in the MENA region, aiming to speed up supply and reduce costs.

We also want to emphasize our ongoing efforts and investments in R&D focused on cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death worldwide. Specifically, we are working on a range of more effective and safer antithrombotic drugs such as platelet aggregation inhibitors, direct thrombin inhibitors (DTIs) and direct factor Xa inhibitors, aimed at both treating and preventing blood clots in veins and preventing stroke and embolism.

And last but not least, we have an R&D line in neurology. What are your views on the current regulatory environment in the region, and what recommendations would you suggest?

Today, the regulatory framework in the region is becoming more aligned with the standards and requirements set by key regulatory authorities, such as the EMA, USFDA, MHRA, PMDA and Swissmedic, which are highly regarded in the evaluation of new drug applications.

Cinfa is aware that each country wants to look after the interests and health of its citizens. Therefore we believe that harmonizing administrative, quality and clinical requirements across the GCC countries as well as standardized evaluation timelines would be helpful.

What initiatives are underway to boost local production within the GCC, and what are CINFA’s plans in this regard?

In alignment with Cinfa’s mission of providing authentic and accessible healthcare solutions to patients, we have taken active steps towards localization of product manufacturing in the MENA region. This initiative will accelerate product supply, make newly launched products more affordable and introduce new manufacturing technologies to the region.

Are there any PPP initiatives in the region, and are you part of any such initiatives?

Cinfa has just started a fruitful collaboration with the department of health in UAE by including many of its products in the unified procurement tender. This tender will cover the needs of patients who are examined at several institutional hospitals. Moreover, Cinfa is extending this collaboration to scientific activities by participation in the first healthcare supply chain congress scheduled on February 7 and 8, 2025, in Dubai. The congress will focus on expanding knowledge on key areas related to healthcare institutions such as pharmacoeconomics, strategic procurement and inventory optimization. H

MECOTEC to Launch New Cryo Chamber Line-up as it Acquires Restore Hyper Wellness’ Polish Manufacturing Unit

Germany’s MECOTEC, a global leader in the cryo technology industry, has acquired Poland’s Zimno Tech, a leading cryo chamber manufacturer, further boosting the portfolio of its world-renowned offerings and its momentum in the industry.

The partnership will enable MECOTEC to roll out new product lines that will immediately be available globally, said Enrico Klauer, chief executive officer of MECOTEC.

As part of the strategy, a rebranding of MECOTEC and Zimno product lines will be rolled out: MECOTEC’s Cryo chambers, which include the cryo:one and cryo:one+, will now be under the Core series, while Zimno’s Cool line-up, including the 1Cool, 2Cool and 4Cool chambers, will be under the NEO series.

MECOTEC’s single room cryo chambers can provide extremely cool temperatures of up to –85°C, while Zimno’s can go further down up to –110°C.

The value of the acquisition was not disclosed, but Mr Klauer said it will give MECOTEC an exclusive contract with Restore for the next years, including for all new shops to be opened, in addition to the logistics and deliveries of the products, which are expected to be available November 2024.

The expanded product line – which Mr. Klauer said will feature upgraded designs that will provide more diversified offerings – will also allow MECOTEC to offer more competitivelyand reasonably-priced products, an essential selling point in order to attract more businesses and consumers to experience the benefit of cryotherapy.

In addition, MECOTEC will also provide comprehensive service and support to the franchise network of Restore Hyper Wellness, Zimno’s franchisee in the United States.

“With our current products, we are positioning ourselves to be more focused

on attracting premium clients,” Mr Klauer said.

The decision to partner to acquire Zimno comes at a time MECOTEC is “growing so fast”: it opened a new facility in India and is currently expanding aggressively in the Middle East, especially in the UAE.

The Zimno acquisition is also part of MECOTEC’s strategy of buying into more companies to boost its research, development and production, Mr Klauer said.

“We need to grow in every kind of direction, so we’re looking for acquisitions as well. We’re also looking for some investors, so we’re looking in both directions,” he said.

The acquisition will underpin MECOTEC’s prolific growth: in the past year, it has grown its revenue in the UAE by 95 per cent and in Asia alone by about 250 per cent, proving that cryo therapy is in the mainstream and is being favored by more people as their well-being practice of choice.

Additionally, the company is forging ahead with “a lot of projects” in the Middle East, particularly in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait. MECOTEC entered the kingdom earlier this year, part of its expansion strategy in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), after making inroads into the region through the UAE in 2022.

The UAE has proved to be a perfect springboard for MECOTEC in MENA: from 5 units of its world-renowned cryo devices having been delivered and

installed in the UAE when it started there in 2022, the company has grown this count to 38 across the MENA region in a matter of 18 months, 80 percent of which are in the Emirates.

UAE Introduces Affordable Health Insurance Starting at Dh320

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE) has introduced a new basic health insurance package for private sector employees and domestic workers across the UAE, aimed at providing healthcare coverage to those not yet insured.

The initiative, in collaboration with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, and the Ministry of Health and Prevention, is part of the Health Insurance Scheme approved by the UAE Cabinet.

The scheme, effective from January 1,

2025, will extend coverage to workers in the emirates of Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, ensuring that 100% of workers in the UAE will be covered by insurance. This expands on the existing mandatory health insurance system in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which already provide coverage for private sector employees and domestic workers. Employers will be required to purchase the new health insurance policy as a prerequisite for issuing or renewing residency permits. However, this mandate will apply only when residency permits are due for renewal, not for work permits issued before January 1, 2024.

Mayo Clinic researchers have developed an innovative testing strategy for mesothelioma that could potentially increase the detection rate of cancer DNA in the blood. This approach focuses on shuffled or swapped sections of DNA in mesothelioma cancer cells, called chromosomal rearrangements.

By detecting these complex DNA patterns, rather than just single-point mutations, the method could lead to

The newly introduced insurance package, available through the DubaiCare Network, includes coverage at seven hospitals, 46 clinics, and 45 pharmacies.

“Actually, I don’t see an inherent immediate danger. Analyzing human beings and behaviors is incredibly complex, because it’s both intricate and instinctive in a way that machines cannot replicate.

AI can assist clinicians in various aspects, but it can never replace the essential work we do, especially in the different specialties of psychology,” remarked Dr Machado.

Patients find the AI-assisted interpretations quite comprehensive. Take the case of Khalid*, a 35-yearold software engineer from Sharjah who frequently used Google to investigate his recurring headaches. Speaking to HEALTH he said, “I would end up with a list of conditions ranging from stress to brain tumors,” he recalls. “It gave me more anxiety than answers because I had no way of knowing which applied to me.”

While tools like Google Docs allowed users to manually log symptoms or track patterns, they still required a lot of effort and expertise to interpret the data. For people like Khalid, managing health felt like piecing together a puzzle with no clear picture in sight.

For him, transitioning to an AIpowered health app was a gamechanger. “Now, I log my symptoms in an app that compares them with my previous data. It can differentiate

He added, “The frequency of using generative AI is more related to age than to nationality or culture. The generation between 20 and 30 are the ones that use more CHATGPT in consultation sometimes even during the consultation. The generation from 30 to 40 years old use it for self-assessment but they don’t bring the subject to consultation. However, the study shows us that they use it in the same frequency daily.”

Biometric sensors, for example, have taken the game a notch further with its ability in authenticating and monitoring using individual biological and physical characteristics.

“For example, our AI tool might suggest a workout plan but a trainer can tweak it to account for a client’s preferences, injuries, or unique goals,” adds Mounir.

Lazar Zekic, 34, who owned a gym in Serbia but is now a personal trainer in the UAE, says he has been using AI to train clients. “It is an amazing feature that allows me to design the program in seconds. If I need to make any adjustments afterward, apps enable me to easily switch the exercises. Designing AI programs follows specific steps to ensure progressive overload, whether it involves the number of repetitions, the weight, or other factors,” says Zekic.

As travelers traversed the length and breadth of globe for trade it was not just for commercial transactions. They exchanged accoutrements, language, food flavors, aromas, flavors, spices, cooking styles and the journey continues….

Nestled on the busy arterial Sheikh Zayed Road, Bistro Aamara, awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand rating, situated on the second floor of Voco Hotel, brings alive ancient Silk route-inspired cuisine with a modern and contemporary twist. Every recipe is reinterpreted by ingenious improvisations in seasonings, spices and presentation that carries the ancient touch yet blended with eclectic new culinary idiom that makes this world a global village.

Beginning with the Bohemian interiors and comfortable settings, Bistro

rest his weary heart and soul and indulge the taste buds.

We ordered the Seasoned Melon and Feta salad with mesclun, balsamic pears, sprinkled with oregano and drenched in a Tarragon emulsion. The crisp, crunchy salad with Eurasian flavors, accompanied with oven-fresh focaccia bread, was just the kind of entrée that helped us bring our true epicurean spirits to the fore.

This was followed by a plate of vegetarian starters - smoked jackfruit and corn shami kebabs presented on bite-sized saffron warqi paratha, dipped in chutney and with cheddar Queso. Perfect teaser to the sumptuous afternoon.

The Chicken Tikka Karaage complemented these starters well with its crispy tanginess enhanced by the Togarashi mayo with sweet and sour dressing, tingling the tangy taste buds.

While the stomach was gorged with the generous helpings and full flavors, our souls wanted more. So, we ordered the vegetarian Dan Dan Udon style noodles with assorted mushrooms, accompanied by Tahina and peanut sauce and crispy XO and a grilled butterflied prawn. The prawn was well-grilled infused with flavors of Peri-peri, fennel and

accompanied with the Middle eastern Muhammara and Indian twist of raw mango salad. These two main courses covered so many countries on the ancient silk route that one felt like a veteran time-traveler.

It was a leisurely lunch, enjoyed with great relish as we experimented with surprise flavours, expecting the unexpected. With such serenades to the salty, tangy and spicy tastebuds, our sweet tastebuds were piqued to know what was in store.

The Valrhona Manjari Fondant, a combination of cool French vanilla ice-cream was presented with a warm cacao fondant and kumquat marmalade. This was followed by a second dessert a Tom Kha a foamy dome-shaped mango flavored creation with a core of tender cream accompanied with a jasmine rice crisp. Both these exquisite desserts provided the perfect finale for a sinful afternoon.

One might need years to be able to do justice to all the recipes and flavours. But the lunch gave us a cameo introduction to the microcosmic world of the Silk Route travelers. Ingredients

Olive oil 50ml

White Onion 50gm

Celery stalk 50gm

Yellow bell pepper 50gm

Red bell pepper 50gm

Green zucchini 50gm

Yellow zucchini 50gm

Black olive 30gm

Green sicilian olive 30gm

Basil leaves 10gm Capers 30gm

Tomato sauce 150gm

Sugar 5gm

White wine vinegar 35ml

Cocoa powder 2gm

Salt to taste

Crushed peppercorns to taste

Method

• Chop all the vegetable in even size

• Heat a pan to medium heat

• Add olive oil and then add each hard vegetable one by one; cook until soft

• Add white wine Vinegar for deglaze; make sure the vinegar evaporates

• Finish with fresh basil leaf, tomato sauce and seasoning

• Served with Sicilian chickpea Fritters (Panella)

• Garnish with toasted pinenuts and fresh parsley leaf

Pumpkin Risotto with Walnut & Sage

Ingredients

Olive oil 25ml

Chopped white onion 35gm

Arborio Rice 400gm

Safron Water 15gm

Vegetable Stock 300gm

Pumpkin (diced) 120gm

Butternut cream 250gm

Toasted walnut 40gm

Sage 03gm

Parmesan cheese 150gm

Unsalted butter 150gm

Salt & Crushed pepper to taste

Fresh Black Truffle Slice 20gm

Truffle oil 50ml

Method

• Heat a pan, add olive oil and sauté onion, sage and diced pumpkin pieces

• Add a little stock In the pan to deglaze the vegetables

• Add risotto rice and saffron water

• Cook until rice is El-dente

• Add butternut cream and toasted walnuts to the risotto. Finish with aged Parmesan cheese and butter

• Garnish with aged Parmesan cheese, toasted walnuts, fried sage, fresh black truffle slices and a little truffle oil.

Stuffed Beef Tenderloin Skewers

Ingredients

Slice tenderloin fillet 400gm

Olive oil 25gm

Chopped white onion 25gm

Toasted pinenut 40gm

Soaked golden raisins 40gm

Salt to taste

Crushed black pepper to taste

Breadcrumbs 50gm

Caciocavallo cheese 100gm

Chopped flat parsley 10gm

Artichoke cream 25gm

Nonna Silvana Salad 100gm

Method

• Slice the beef tenderloin into pieces weighing 25 gm each

• Place with spices in mixer and blend well

• Heat a pan, add olive oil, pinenut, raisins, breadcrumbs, salt , peppercorn and parsley.

• Once the mixer which may be heated up with the blending cools, add the Caciocavallo cheese.

• Take the beef slices and add the mix; each piece of tenderloin must have at least 18 gm of filling

• Once done, roll and place on skewers and grill for 2-3 minutes with fresh red onion wedges and bay leaves.

• Serve with artichoke cream and Nonna's Silvana Salad.

Canoli With Ricotta Filling

Ingredients

All Purpose Flour 500gm

Sugar castor 50gm

Egg yolk 2nos

Refined oil 50gm

Saturated fat 30gm

Synthetic vinegar 20gm

Red Wine 100gm

Salt 3gm

Cocoa powder 4gm

Ricotta cheese 350gm

Breakfast sugar 40gm

Vanilla essence 3gm

Cinnamon powder For flavor

Chocolate chips 50gm

Method

• Mix dough to make the cannoli. Place all ingredients on the list from flour to cocoa powder in the dough machine and mix for 3-4 minutes at the speed of 3, until the dough becomes crumbly

• Once crumbly, take it out and knead it well with hands for a few minutes and then place in the chiller for two hours

• Later, roll out this dough into a think sheet with the rolling pin and cut into the required sizes.

• Brush the sheets with egg yolk to help it stay in shape, roll into cannoli tube and deep fry for two minutes and 30 seconds at 180 °Celsius.

• For the filling:

• Take the Ricotta cheese, vanilla essence, cinnamon powder and sugar

• With a handheld mixer, beat the mixture until it becomes smooth and creamy.

• Then with help of a spatula fold in the small pieces of chocolate and fill into the cannoli shells

• Garnish with toasted pistachio nuts and dusted breakfast sugar

Brioche With Pistachio Icecream

Ingredients

All purpose flour 300gm

Sugar 35gm

Salt 7gm

Bread improver 2.5gm

Fresh milk 150gm

Egg yolk 2Nos

Unsalted butter 60gm

Milk powder 10gm

Fresh yeast 25gm

Method

• For the bun, add all the ingredients and knead into a soft, smooth dough. You can do this manually or in a dough machine

• Once done, divide the dough into small even-sized balls.

• Keep at room temperature for rest and proofing for a minimum of 50 minutes. Then bake for a minimum in an oven for over eight minutes at over 180 °Celsius

• Once the bread is baked, do not forget to brush it with refined oil

• Serve the brioche sandwiched with roasted pistachio ice-cream
