Here’s how to summer-proof yourself with this pronged approach
From real tips on how to protect your skin and eyes, to knowing what to eat, drink, and wear, here’s a look at how to stay cool as the season sizzles.
Pamper your skin
It’s summertime and as the mercury rises, it’s time to apply generous amounts of sun block cream for effective protection from ultraviolet rays (UV), to help prevent premature aging and keeping a cool eye on hydration. Seasonal factors such as humidity and dust have an adverse impact on the skin, leaving it dry, irritable, and prone to acne breakouts and rashes.
Unfortunately, the answer isn’t to pile on the cream – this just blocks pores and gives bacteria a warm, welcoming place to fester. The right routine becomes imperative, especially if you want that just-offthe-beach glow. Wondering how to go about it? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
Dr. Azita Ahmadi American Board certified aesthetic skin specialist
4 June/July 2023
Dr. Azita Ahmadi, American Board certified aesthetic skin specialist, with a fellowship from the American Academy of antiaging, and proprietor of Serenity
Aesthetic and Slimming Polyclinic, Dubai feels residents of UAE and other countries in the Middle East, need to be conscious of following a proper skin care routine, especially during the summers.
“Strong sun rays, both the UV rays A and B, have a damaging effect on the skin and during summers, one must minimize sun exposure which can trigger premature aging. Prolonged exposure can cause deep sunburn as well as malignant sunspots. Wearing an effective sunblock cream is essential and in the peak of summers, I would recommend at least a SPF 50 cream which provides effective sun protection for up to two hours in a single application. The inorganic compounds in some good creams break up the UVA and UVB rays, preventing it from being absorbed by the skin.”
Wash your face twice a day, for best results
Choose a gentle, hypoallergenic cleanser or even one that is homemade with natural, organic ingredients. Heat means more oil production, which can lead to acne. Choose one that works for your skin, by first identifying whether you have dry or oily or combination skin. If you have oily skin, it is prone to breakouts, try one with salicylic acid. But ensure that you don’t ‘clean’ your face too often as this will strip it of essential oils and do more damage than good.
Toner is a friend: Use a gentle toner after your wash to close those pores, once again fighting the odds of a breakout.
Add a serum: With free radicals being part of our natural aging process, a serum that’s high on antioxidants can help you stem the free radicals and protect your skin. Try a water-based serum for skin that can get you hydrated without becoming oily.
Moisturize: It’s easy to forget to moisturize during summer but do so often with a light potion that won’t cause breakouts but will hydrate.
Don’t forget the SPF: Slather on sunscreen and reapply every two hours or so. It doesn’t matter whether you are indoors
or outdoors, what matters is you have a healthy layer of protection against the sun’s harmful rays. Choose SPF 50 as dermatologists recommend.
Exfoliate: Once or twice a week. This will unclog your pores and keep you from breaking out. But don’t overdo it – exfoliating more than once or twice a week will dry skin out and cause it to crack. Similarly, don’t exfoliate if you have sunburn as this will damage the already hurting skin.
Here’s how you can protect your skin
Dr. Ahmadi adds that following a proper skin care routine, especially during the summers, will preserve youthfulness and freshness.

How to stay hydrated?
And while experts recommend 11 cups of water for women a day and 16 for men, this doesn’t mean overdoing it; we also get water from the foods and beverages we consume.
Looking for easy ways to get your 11 cups? Al Mahmoud suggests the following tips:
Hydration becomes a watchword every year as summer strikes –and for good reason. Consuming enough water is imperative to regulate body temperature, keep joints lubricated, prevent infections, deliver nutrients to cells, and keep organs functioning properly, explains a US-based Harvard University blog.
Nour Al Mahmoud, clinical dietician and nutritionist at Prime Health Care Group seconded that. She adds, “Being well-hydrated also improves sleep quality, cognitive alertness, and mood.”
Begin your day with a couple of cups of water: After a long night without water, this will replenish your reserves and wake you up better than coffee ever could.
Always keep a water bottle by your side: Nowhere is the adage ‘out of sight out of mind’ truer than when you are busy and don’t have a visual reminder to drink.
Use an alarm for a reminder to take a sip: It’s easy to get wrapped up in the day’s events and forget to take care of yourself. Set an alarm so you don’t forget.
Drink a glass of water before each meal: Often, the body signals hunger when we are thirsty – know your signals and drink a glass of water before starting your meal; it’ll keep you hydrated, and it’ll keep you
from eating empty calories.
Try an infusion: Cucumber and mint, strawberries and other fruits make for a delicious way to up your water game.
Keep an eye on the color of your urine: Dark yellow means dehydrated. Ideally, urine should be colorless.
Say no to sugary drinks: Replace it with things like lemonade or buttermilk.
Eat fruits high in water content: think watermelon, oranges, grapes. Set a daily goal: And see if you are up to the challenge.
Signs of dehydration
If you observe any of the following signs, you may be suffering from dehydration.
Feeling thirsty
Muscle cramps
A decrease in normal volume of urine.
Dark-colored urine
Dry skin
Feeling fatigue and lethargy.
Fainting Confusion

How nutritive is your plate?
craving a quick and easy snack. Melon: With a host of Vitamin B, magnesium, potassium, and fiber, not to mention water content, melons are a sweet option.
Buttermilk/lassi: This cool drink with yoghurt will keep the heat at bay perfectly. It is also gut friendly, as it is rich in probiotics. Add roasted and powered cumin for extra flavor.
Leafy greens: Light on the stomach and high on nutrients, these make for the perfect summer food.
digestion, relieving anxiety and even soothing inflammation.
Jafri adds, “It’s not just what you are eating, it’s also about how you are cooking it. Take advantage of the heat to change the way your meal is prepped. Choose raw, go for more salad, garnished with seeds and nuts which requires less stove work, grilling food and adding cool soups or cold dishes to the menu can help you not only save time, but also effort while making the spread more nutritious.”
Frozen sugary treats litter supermarkets and proliferate advertisements on all media – but beware, this may do more harm than good. Looking for a refreshing something to keep heat at bay while cooling you down? Fahmida Jafri, dietician and head of nutrition, Thumbay Hospital, Ajman provides a list of nutrition rich summer foods to stay cool. “Check out healthy alternatives that’ll cut out the extra calories while taking care of perfect nutrition,” advises Jafri.
Cucumber:
Rich in water content and low in calories, cucumber makes for an excelling munchy, especially if you are
Lemon: Jazz up that glass of water with a squeeze of lemon. Rich in vitamin C, this will not only boost your immunity but also help your skin glow.
Yoghurt: Packed with probiotics and cooling impact, add a little yoghurt to your meal.
Mint: This herb has cooling properties. Besides, it tastes delicious.
Coconut water: Nutrient dense and filling, coconut water is a lovely replacement for a cold drink.
Chamomile: A cup of chamomile tea before bed can help you get a great night’s sleep, but it has so many other benefits as well – these include
5 tips for healthy, summertime cooking:
1. Plan ahead: This will save you time in the kitchen while also ensuring less waste.
2. Keep it simple: No one wants a heavy meal on a warm summer day, a light easy-to-make one will suffice.
3. Use your appliances: To chop or combine ingredients and give one-pot or crackpot meals a try.
4. Add salads and cold soups to your repertoire.
5. Grill or air fry instead of trying to save on oil and heaviness.
Skin reflects inner health, so what you eat and drink – is just as important as what you put on your face.

Keep a check on your eye health
Eye care is an integral part of your overall health care, point out Mayo Clinic ophthalmologists. When summer strikes, it is not enough to wear sunglasses in summer – while they are an important tool in your arsenal for eye health, there are other precautions one must take for going easy on the eyes, as viral infections, such as conjunctivitis are very common during summers.
Avoid exposing your eyes to excess air conditioning or air from a fan – this air, which gusts at high speeds can result in dry eyes. Instead, always carry with you some moisturizing eye drops, to relieve any itchiness or dryness that occurs. Heading to the pool? Follow best practices, afterwards use your eyedrops to rinse out your eyes –this will keep them cool and keep any irritants such as chlorine or bacteria from staying in your eyes. And finally, wear a hat to shield you from those UV rays in the summer months. Be cool.

Physical fitness in the summer
Summers are no excuse to give up on your fitness routine. To stay fit, it’s important to stay active but to keep oneself motivated through the warmer months is literally like pitting oneself against the elements of nature. As mercury shoots up, it’s time to plan a smart workaround for a workout to keep you on your toes.
One of the most important elements of outdoor workouts is to avoid the peak summer sun. Recalibrate the outdoor exercises, limiting them to dawn and dusk. If you are an avid swimmer, do your laps post sunset.
During the day, be wise to plan out your weekly workout, devoting a day each to upper, mid and lower body, using body weight, planks, burpees and sit-ups at home. If you do opt for jogging or calisthenics, choose to do that in your gym. Working out is important but equally important is planning your fitness regime according to the heat to avoid any palpitations, sun stroke and sunburn. Here are few handy dos and don’t’s for your summer fitness routine
Cold shower: Take one before a workout to help bring down your core temperature and keep an individual cooler for longer even as you sweat
it out. US-based Penn Medicine goes so far as to suggest keeping your hair wet when you exercise, ‘to help you to stay cool during your workout’.
Right time: While early mornings and evenings are perfect for exercise, avoid hitting the outdoors when the sun is out in force –between the hours of 10 and 3 - as this may cause dehydration and even heat stroke.
Think about the water: While summer can be brutal for sports, it’s a great time to get into the swimming pool and practice a few laps or games such as water polo. Exercising in the pool is also great for your joints and easy on the body – so you get the workout you need and want minus the strain.
Do not overexercise: While some breathlessness and
palpitations are inevitable when exercising, know when you need to stop, rest and wind up for the day. Don’t push yourself too much as your body is already working overtime to cope with the heat of the day.
Wear loose, light-colored clothes: These will allow for ventilation and won’t soak up the heat. The worst color you can wear at this time is black.
Stay hydrated: Keep a sports drink on hand to replenish the electrolytes - potassium, sodium, chloride, phosphorus, magnesium, and calcium - lost during exercise. Also keep a bottle of water to sip from in between your bouts.
There you have it – a five-pronged approach to comprehensive health care. Happy summers! H

Making skin sense
Our skin is the largest and one of the most vital organs, covering 2 sq meters across the human body.
“The first Kaya Clinic was established in Dubai in 2003. Twenty years ago, aesthetics and beauty treatments were largely confined to a few peels and laser hair reduction. Over time, as skin care and aesthetics treatments became more sophisticated, we added equipment, treatment modalities, skin care specialists, making sure to address the needs of our clients.”
Adapting to client needs
Dr Mansi Suman Mukherjee Dermatologist - Kaya Clinic
Kaya Skin Clinic, UAE, celebrating its 20th anniversary, has set trends, and introduced the cutting edge technology to serve the aesthetic needs of both women and men of this region to rejuvenate and restore youth.
Chronicling the journey of two decades Dr Mansi Suman Mukherjee, dermatologist at Kaya Clinic, shared the trendsetting milestones of Kaya Clinic.
Dr Mukherjee feels Kaya Skin Clinic succeeded because it was receptive to the changing needs of a multinational, multicultural population of UAE and quickly incorporated advanced treatments, technology, equipment and highly trained dermatologists to their clinic to adapt to the changing requirements of its discerning clients.
“We have been the leaders in this field. Over the years, our clinic continued to understand the need of different skins, for both genders, from different races, elaborated Dr Mukherjee.
She continued, “We, at Kaya Skin Clinic have evolved over time to be able to treat different skin types. We kept abreast of the latest advancements in aesthetics and cosmetic care and incorporated all sophisticated techniques and equipment, augmenting our team of doctors to provide treatments tailored to the individual needs of the client. “
The clinic has advanced cosmetic skin care treatments ranging from injectables, anti aging treatments, lasers, chemical peels, acne and pigmentation treatments, body contouring and sculpting, to hair rejuvenation and regrowth. From just one clinic in Dubai, the group expanded the chain to have 23 clinics across the UAE , KSA and Oman catering to the varied needs of over 350,000 customers.
Of genetics and epigenetics
Dr Mukherjee reiterated that with a variety of non-invasive and invasive treatments offered at Kaya, natural aging could be slowed down.
“The pace of aging depends on two factors – genetics and epigenetics. While most of us understand that our hereditary heritage plays an key role in the way we age, we can address this with epigenetics. Epigenetics is the study of how our behavior and environment can cause changes and affect the way our genes work. Based on those principles, we provide individualized treatments. So, if I have a young 20-year-old come in for
12 June/July 2023
an acne treatment, we consider, her skin, her diet, and nutrition and hormonal changes to decide on the course of action,” explained Dr Mukherjee.
There is no fixed age when you begin treatments. The age of clients visiting Kaya Skin Clinic ranges from 20-85 years. Usually, the clinic gets women in their early twenties who come in for pre-rejuvenation to preserve their skin and beauty needs.
Dr Mukherjee explained, “Preventive care of the skin helps improve texture, prevent pigmentation, and slow down wrinkling. We usually turn away a teenager who may come in for filler or injectable. However, if a 14-year-old comes in for treatment of severe acne, I will treat her to prevent the scarring later. It all depends on the skin condition of an individual.“
She added , “We have people who come in for anti-aging treatments and our approach to treatment is not just filling or removing all lines, but understanding the bone,
soft tissue structure and skin quality to individualize treatment and achieve natural results. A filler or injectable in the right place helps support the bone structure, soft tissues and prevent sagging. A single treatment with fine hyaluronic acid injectable treatment and improve hydration of the skin exponentially. We sometimes have men come saying they have a weak chin or jawline that affects their board room dynamics. Giving a filler to contour their jawline makes a significant aesthetic difference to their look. Different individuals have different needs and treatments always should be individualized. “
Bouquet of services
The clinic has clients who come in for consultations for a variety of reasons. A plethora of skilled Cosmetic Dermatologists and highly trained staff work in tandem to address the needs of the clients. There is also cellulite treatment, FDA approved technologies to build muscles in four to six sessions, fat reducing technologies for body contouring, body sculpting, face lifting technologies like Emface, Ultherapy and also treatments for pigmentation,
acne , acne scarring , hair rejuvenation and hair restoration, all non-invasive. Where invasive treatments are required, the aesthetic plastic surgeon steps in.
In conclusion, Dr Mukherjee said, “Skin care, cosmetic dermatology, aesthetics, and hair growth restoration is a very niche area, and one requires a set of really knowledgeable Dermatologists and skilled staff to address these needs. At Kaya we have all the specialists. There is no “One size fits all” solution. We consider all the diversities of race and skin care needs and provide a tailored holistic treatment plan. The right guidance, right treatment can work wonders.” H Scan

CAN YOUR TREADMILL GIVE YOU A HEART ATTACK?
SLOW AND STEADY WIN THE HEALTH RACE EVERY TIME, ADVISE CARDIOLOGISTS.
Do you experience shortness of breath or chest pain while on the treadmill, racking up those daily steps?
Don’t ignore the discomfort; it may be a sign of something far more sinister than exercise well done.
Dr. Rajeev Lochan Head of the department - Cardiology, Al Zahra Hospital, Dubai
While there are many benefits to exercise including better sleep and reduced risk of heart disease, these rigorous rounds, and repetitions, exert pressure on the heart to pump more oxygenated blood. If the body is not used to these demands, it can cause sudden arrhythmia,
or irregular heartbeat. This in turn may lead to sudden cardiac arrest. A cardiac episode may also be caused by blockages in the heart; pressure on the heart may cause the plaque to rupture. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of healthy individuals in their
forties who have experienced cardiac episodes post a treadmill workout.
Those at risk for cardiac arrest are typically males over 35, and with often undiagnosed heart disease.
16 June/July 2023
Dr. Rajeev Lochan, Head of the Department of Cardiology, who established the first JCI accredited “Heart Attack Center at Al Zahra Hospital, informs that their team receives many heart attack patients; the majority are less than 45-years of age. Physical /emotional stress, improper food, de-hydration, and smoking habits, have been the common risk factors. With angioplasty, most of these patients’ heart arteries are opened within the first "Golden Hour". On discharge, they are advised to exercise regularly, but to start walking with gradual increments. They are cautioned not to start running on a treadmill or jogging.
Dr. Lochan suggests that starting exercise has many more advantages than risks, provided one starts gently and increases the extent and intensity gradually over weeks and months. Irrespective of the fact that the individual may have exercised regularly, if restarting after a gap, he should be gentle in approach.
“Those who work out once a week rather than every day are more at risk of cardiac trouble; a consistent schedule allows the body to become accustomed to the added pressure and allows it to adapt and thrive. It is ideal to perform 30 to 45 minutes mixed exercises five days in a week,” advises Dr Lochan
What are the high-risk markers?
The Journal of the American College of Cardiology in a paper on ‘Sudden cardiac death in older athletes’ lists some of the markers for those at high risk of cardiac surgery. These include high cholesterol; diabetes; a strong family history of sudden cardiac death or early heart disease; or obese with a body-mass index over 28.
Does this mean I shouldn’t exercise?
Not at all. The American Heart Association states on its website that everyone should get ‘at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-
intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity, or a combination of both, preferably spread throughout the week.’
How this helps
Lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, dementia and Alzheimer’s, several types of cancer, and some complications of pregnancy. Better sleep, including improvements in insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea. Improved cognition, including memory, attention, and processing speed.
Less weight gain, obesity, and related chronic health conditions. Better bone health and balance, with less risk of injury from falls. Fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety. Better quality of life and sense of overall well-being.
What to keep in mind when exercising
Don’t overdo it: Whether you are weight training or running on a treadmill, increase your burden slowly and gradually. Ask yourself, ‘Am I fit enough?’ If you have family history of cardiac arrests or are at risk, get a check up by a physician or cardiologist before working yourself to the bone. Stay hydrated: Ensure a healthy intake of fluids while you exercise. Know when to stop. Don’t work out right after a heavy meal.
Say no to steroids.
When should you take extra precautions while exercising?
If a doctor has warned you about being at risk for heart disease.
If you’ve recently experienced a heart problem.
If you live an inactive lifestyle and are trying to make a change
Seek help immediately in case of any of the following symptoms:
Chest discomfort: This may be the first sign of a cardiac episode; if you should feel uncomfortable pressure or fullness at the center of your chest stop exercising immediately. Seek medical help if the feeling persists for more than a few minutes.
Breathlessness: Especially when felt with chest discomfort needs attention. Dizziness or light-headedness: Should you feel light-headed, stop exercising immediately.
Heart rhythm abnormalities: Palpitations, unusual heartbeat sensations may point to more nefarious health issues.
Unusual sweating: Exercise leads to sweating, but cold sweating or nausea may mean possible trouble. If you have either symptom, stop for a few minutes to access the issue.
Did you know?
Endurance runners are also at risk of cardiac trouble.
Runner's cardiomyopathy affects about 25 percent of the population. For those with the condition, at the end of a marathon, the right atrium and right ventricle dilate and there are elevations of blood troponins and B-type natriuretic peptide, which point to temporary injury to those chambers.
Your heart, your lifeline
Proper exercise, nutrition and fitness is the way forward. However, before you embark on a regime, consult your doctor to assess your cardiac health. H

How Yoga Helped Me Fight Depression and
Get Fit
On the surface, Dr. Datar had a perfect life as the chairman and managing director of Al Adil Trading Company, a loving wife and two beautiful children. But underneath it all, there was a man struggling to balance his professional and personal life all the while grappling with increasingly ill health. A chance encounter with a yoga guru changed it all.
Health in doldrums
Dr. Dhananjay Datar,
Chairman and Managing Director
of Al Adil Trading Company reveals how finding that elusive work-life balance saved his life.
Dr. Datar had a disturbed lifestyle; with late nights and irregular eating patterns, which resulted in severe acidity, back pain, and headaches. And he was once again fighting an old enemy, depression. [He had suffered from bouts of depression twice before, once as a child when his dog died and once when his family was involved in a near-fatal accident
during which he lost 16 kg and was placed on anti-depressants. “I couldn’t eat or sleep peacefully. I underwent nine endoscopies, tried various therapies and medications but to no avail. I had started to fear death,” he says. Another encounter made him realize that it was time to focus on his well-being at this time as well. “Once when I was at the Krishna Mandir in Dubai, I saw a poor but stout man outside the
INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY

temple eating lunch happily with his family. I realized then that the most precious treasure in life is a sound mind and a sound body. I became determined to regain my lost health.”
Early days
When he began yoga, Dr. Datar recounted how he was suffering from body stiffness and he spent most of his time meditating, walking and a few asanas. Within a month, says his yoga guru Ansuiya Singh, he had started to feel better and become more limber. He started to confide in her about his health problems and they began to target those areas. He also went to an acupuncturist for his back pain and an Ayurveda doctor for his acidity. This three-pronged approach relieved his condition. With this, he developed an interest in the different asanas (yoga postures), the areas these affected, and how they could be taken up a notch. Soon, he was able to work through simple to complex poses without problems.
Healthy journey
Yoga boasts many benefits as it not only improves strength but also balance, relaxation and manage stress. In fact, John Hopkins Medicine in the US reported the following, “According to the National Institute of Health, scientific evidence shows that yoga supports stress management, mental health, mindfulness, healthy eating, weight loss and quality sleep.”
According to Singh, the most amazing thing was when he did a headstand all by himself without any support. “It was during the time of COVID-19 and we were social distancing. But he was in such a focused place that just with guidance and determination, he managed the headstand.”
A new road ahead
Dr. Datar credits his new lifestyle – eating on time, sleeping well and focusing on yoga and meditation –for his happier self. He explains, “I do regular exercise and have a simple but nutritious diet. I devote time to myself, my family and business equally. I have decided to enjoy life to its fullest.” Today, there is a spring in his step. He wakes up and walks for 30 minutes, does 45 minutes of breathing exercises, followed by one hour of yoga. The transformation has been spectacular. “Since I met him, it’s like he’s become 20 years younger. He has so much more energy,” says Singh.

Saluting the Warrior Angels
A tribute to the noble profession of nursing
In the healthcare sector and in our everyday lives, nurses play a critical role in ensuring the health of the nation.
On May 12, the world paid tribute to these brave warriors who have been at the forefront serving patients with compassion and loving care. Health magazine zooms in on two different kinds of nurses, those who work in hospitals and those who provide home healthcare. We salute the dedication, patience, and passion for serving humanity.

Building a better world
For nurses working at hospitals the dynamics of care is slightly different but when it comes to dedication and commitment, that is required in the same proportion as that of nurses in home health care.
Without passion for the job, none of it would work, but with it, the impossible begins to seem possible. For, 37-year-old Swapna Devassy Kutty her job as a unit manager in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at PRIME Hospital, Dubai not only fulfils here passion, but is a humbling experience that emphasizes the vulnerability of life. Her day begins at 7am, with accessing the records of patients in her unit – their progress and
setbacks – and assigning nurses to their stations. She leads the way in helping the staff be ready for emergencies on the ground so they can save lives. “In the critical care unit, doctors’ rounds are unlike those in non-ICU wards; we need to know the general condition, go through the previous lab reports, correlate reports… then we need to go for our multidisciplinary rounds. These are undertaken by doctors the head of the departments, junior doctors, other specialists, the nurse managers, the team leaders, and the staff. Together, we discuss intricacies of a patient’s condition and with everyone giving in their inputs it is a well-rounded analysis. We also double check to see if

anyone missed anything,” she tells HEALTH, adding that next comes discussions – and sometimes, counselling - with the family of the patient.
This level of dedication to work often comes at a personal cost.
I have three children, aged 11, 9 and three. And things can get difficult, especially in times like the pandemic, when we were worried not just for our patients but also for our children. But it’s passion that carries us forward. We can see the impact of our caring in front of your eyes, in the patient's improvement. So that helps ones strengthen one's skills. Moreover, it gives you more confidence to serve. This year, the theme is nurses are our future. It means we can build a better world by providing our care,” adds Kutty, with conviction.

Home health care nurses
While there is no doubt that nursing is one of the noblest professions in the world, when it comes to home health care, the impact that nurses have is amplified manifold. These warriors have to not only be committed to long-term care of patients such as critically ill children, young road accident victims, and geriatric patients, but must also remain emotionally invested with the families of these patients.
Dr. Tazaka Andrabi, is the nursing manager at Healthserve. Established by a former navy medical corp. specialist, Dr. Shekhar Mehta, Healthserve is a DHA licensed home health care service in Dubai. Dr. Tazaka has spent over two decades in nursing in KSA and the UAE. Working at Healthserve for over six years, Dr. Andrabi reveals the intensive commitment in home health care.
Considering her job to be a mission, Dr. Andrabi explains, “At Healthserve, we have highly skilled and experienced home healthcare and site nurses from different nationalities. We have various nurses and physiotherapists who focus not just on clinical excellence but
provide a genuine and warm human touch for our patients, too. We work on their customized care plans and are responsible for their care, 24/7 with no holidays or breaks. Our patients are scattered across the UAE.”
As a nursing manager, Dr. Andrabi conducts training for her nurses, maintains their schedules and rosters, conducts visits to homes, and ascertains that the patients are being well looked after. She describes a typical day in her life. “Once I am at work, I make sure to boost the morale of all my nurses. I always tell them to think of your patient as your own father, mother, or sibling, feel their pain to be able to be receptive to their smallest need and to serve them with unparalleled dedication. I organize surprise on-site visits and checks to ensure the quality of the service provided by our nurses and accompany them for patients visits.”
Dr. Andrabi feels home health care nurses have a greater emotional and physical stake in their jobs than hospital nurses due to long working hours. “In a hospital, a nurse’s duty is to her patient, and she can tune out once she steps out of the premise. Here, our nurses must be sensitive enough to understand the needs of not just the patient but that of the families. We have patients in all age groups ranging from children up to even 100 years old; some of them are intubated; we have a young road trauma victim who is paraplegic and there are many complicated cases. Our nurses are trained not just to provide good clinical care, but also to extend full emotional support to the family and stand with them in these difficult times. We were completely dedicated to our work throughout the pandemic, continuing with home care, making sure to follow all infection control protocols and minimize the risks. “

In love with the nursing profession
Meet Diaphan Infante, 38, a dedicated home health care nurse with Health Serve for over three years.
I took up nursing on the request of my mother and soon adjusted to it. In nursing, I must tell my fellow nurses too, if you have deep compassion and love for your profession, your dedication to the patient comes automatically,” says Infante, who is currently working on duty for a geriatric patient at her home. “I can see my patient is completely dependent, she is on mechanical ventilation. As a home health care nurse, I am not just looking after her complete nursing needs, but I must establish trust and a bond with the family. I realized the patient is someone’s wife, mother, sibling and daughter and they are so upset about this condition. I try to bring as much comfort to the family because they know their loved one is being looked after well,” explained Infante.

Elaborating on her role, she adds, “Home health care nurses must be emotionally invested in their patients. The last patient I

Everyday feng shui tips to restore harmony and prosperity in your home.
• Keep your space tidy and organized: Clutter obstructs the flow of energy, so it’s important to keep your space tidy and organized.
• Avoid mirrors reflecting the bed in the master bedroom. Mirrors
bounce off the energy in the room and can result in depleting energy and triggering sleeplessness.
• Avoid plants inside the bedroom as their energy can contradict your sleep.
• Keep doorways completely clutter-free to encourage free-
flowing energy channels.
• Avoid furniture with sharp edges as it directs detrimental chi at you.
• Do not mix colors in furniture and walls. Try to maintain light colors in furniture and add cushions in color tones of your choice. Red acts as simulator, orange promotes happiness, yellow gold symbolizes power, use green cushions for new beginnings and healings.
• Avoid hanging knives in the kitchen. It can trigger arguments and lead to harm.
• Place a money toad close to the main door, diagonally facing the house to attract wealth and prosperity.
• Hang a six-rod hollow metal windchime in the Northwest of your house for the year 2023 as this segment is afflicted with negative energy. The sound of these windchimes will create positive vibrations and dispel
negative energy.
• Place a salt lamp in the north of the living room and keep it turned on 24x7. This will clear all kinds of blocks in career and wealth enhancement.
• Place a Bagua mirror above the main door outside the house to protect the house from all negative frequencies coming in. According to classical feng shui, the Bagua works like an amulet warding off bad energy and protecting your home.
• Hang a pair of Wu Lou’s on each side of the bed on the headboard side behind the bed. The Wu Lou is a symbol of health, prosperity, and wealth. Hanging it on either side of the bed will help clear up all stress-related issues as well as ill health. H

“Healthy eating should be a habit. It becomes even more important in the summers when the mercury rises. I have taken care to create an eclectic, multicuisine menu for this issue of ‘HEALTH magazine’. The cooking styles are all healthy - roasting, baking, steamed and sautéing. The ingredients are all seasonal and locally available. For dessert, I have chosen a sugar-free option that relies on the natural sweetness of mango and honey and is complemented by the nutty flavor of wholesome chia seeds.”

Dining Out
The Royal Budha
An authentic Thai dining experience in the heart of new Dubai and a redefined dining experience spearheaded by Master Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, here’s a roundup of our favorite venues in Dubai.
soup, which was served in generous portions sizes and was brimming over with fresh vegetables herbs and prawns. We loved the green papaya salad and the beef satay, which was served with a peanut dipping sauce. For beverages, we tried the Siam Tom Yum, a heady blend of lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, red chili, and soda.
garlic, black mushroom and Thai chili. And who can resist a warming Thai green curry which was brimming over with tender chicken in a rich coconut milk sauce which paired fabulously with the steamed jasmine rice and Pad Thai noodles.
The Royal Budha encapsulates an edgy modern vibe, with dark colors, plays on lighting, and accents of gold. The menu offers a diverse range of Thai dishes, from appetizers to wok fried and steamed mains to noodles and rice and desserts. The vegetarian menu is ample and any dish can be tailormade to suit vegans.
The welcome drinks (ginger shots) arrived on Thai inspired tray followed by the prawn crackers and taro crackers with dipping sauces, we tucked into the unlimited dim sum, an amazing offer available on the weekends. It included chicken, veg, seafood and different variants of dim sum, including steamed seaweed rolls, crispy buchi with peanut filling, which was our unanimous favorite, steamed barbeque chick pau, and more. We next sampled the Tom Yam
For our mains, we tried their most popular dishes across the menu, starting with the Pla Kapng Nueng Manao—a flavorful steam sea bass, available as a fillet or whole fish, drizzled with Thai lemon dressing Thai chili, coriander leaves and fresh garlic. The Goong Thod KraTiem Prik Thai was deep fried tiger prawns accompanied by a garlic and black pepper sauce. Of the veg dishes, we enjoyed the Phad Phak Bung Fai Dang—a green leaf similar to spinach, with soya bean paste,
We also enjoyed some authentic Thai desserts, including Gluay Thod I-Tim, or crispy fried banana served with vanilla ice-cream and my all-time favorite: Khao Niew Ma Muang, which was the sweet, sticky rice served with ripe mango slices and coconut milk.
Don’t miss this delightful Thai dining experience which brings together flavorful food, an edgy ambience, and attentive service, under one roof.

A bustling casual dining space in Bur Juman that is the brainchild of celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor, The Yellow Chili offers a redefined North Indian dining experience like no other. Here you can savor non-veg and veg dishes cooked to perfection while enjoying a casual, laid-back ambience with the family.
We started with tamatar dhaniya ka ark, namely, tomato soup with coriander, followed by the spinach & chickpeas chaat, a delightful juxtaposition of crispy spinach,
and chickpeas, tossed with sweet sour dressing and sweetened yogurt. We also tucked into the non-veg platter which was a diverse range of moreish kebobs ranging from with mutton seekh kebobs, kasundi fish, tandoori murgh, assortment of tadka and fennelgarlic chicken tikka served with a green coriander and mint chutney, picked spicy onions, and Indian pickle. And my favorite of the appetizers was the Dahi ke kebob, which was a heavenly crunchy ball made of crispy fried kataifi
style curry with hints of cinnamon and cloves; and the very regal dish borrowed from the royal nizams of yesteryears—Dawat-E-Murgh, chicken simmered in a heady gravy made of peanuts, sesame, and coconuts. All of these signature dishes went wonderfully when paired with the garlic and butter naans, as well as the paneer kulcha.
They also offer lots of fresh juices as well as specialty mocktails and mojitos—we loved the mango margherita and the Peru pyala, made of guava juice, lemon and mint served in a chili rimmed glass. The desserts were divine, and I loved the Motichoor -Panjiri tart served with rabdi mousse as well as the malai kulfi on a stick.

Everybody Can Clay
mud on a potter’s wheel to create art work is not just a hobby but a therapy, says Mud House studio owner, Preeti Pawani.
Molding
One therapeutic way of doing this is to take a one-hour session at a potter’s wheel, feel the moist, cool touch of malleable clay in the palms
of your hand and work through it at the spinning wheel to create a shape and form at will. Psychologists call it the Haptic experience – a tactile exchange of sensation. Our hands are like a fine-tuned perceptual instrument. As the clay touches the hands, it awakens a very distinct sense of touch that acts upon our subconscious awakening other pleasant tactile memories, resulting in deep relaxation.
Awaken your inner muse
Dubai’s Mud House, pottery studio at Al Quoz, is just the place to
provide you with that healing touch. With a winning slogan, Let’s Clay, The brainchild of art enthusiast Preeti Pawani, this pottery studio was launched two years ago, to bring solace to the frayed nerves of people dealing with post-pandemic trauma. It has now become the goto place for stressed out corporate employees, school children looking to channel their creativity, housewives reawakening their art muse, and much more. The studio
As we navigate through the maze of life, trying to make sense of the chaos, sometimes we look to be grounded and in harmony with the natural elements.
40 June/July 2023
is overflowing with inspirations for creativity through music and the spinning wheel.
Recounting her own journey in the world of creative art, Pawani explains,
I trained in the art of clay molding and loved creating pieces, firing them into exquisite ceramic art at the kiln. It is a truly unparalleled feeling of joy. Therefore, I decided to share this tremendous decompression I felt with others.
The studio is the place where she spends maximum time creating exquisite contemporary pieces of modern clay art that are also now available at Dubai Duty Free shops too.
Pawani, who is passionate about pottery, found this as a perfect way to combine art with business and she felt that Dubai that had a rich tradition of pottery, lacked a potter’s community in modern times. With complete support from her husband Harish, a Dubai businessman, and son Vishaal and his wife
How pottery can create that right shift within you
Firstly, psychologists often point out that it is very important for all of us to break the regimented schedules in life, let the little child within us out and let go of the everyday stress in life. That is exactly what Mud House does.
One can simply don the apron and sit at the wheel and plunge hands guilt free into mud. There is joy in getting dirty. Old friends, office colleagues, neighbors, families come here to take these group sessions and bond over mud. The instructor provides the exact instructions to help you exert just the right pressure on the wheel to be able to coax the clay into transforming into a mug,
glass, bowl for anything else you might will to create.
Once that is done, take it to be glazed and fired at the kiln. The next time you return, collect your labor of love from the store shelf and pour yourself a cup of tea in your own creation. The pleasure and satisfaction of doing that is unparalleled and the deep healing that it provides is just what the doctor ordered.
Five health benefits of mud pottery
• Helps reduce stress by simulating the tactile senses.
• Helps improve focus and concentration.
• Sharpens creative instincts.
• Triggers endorphins, the feel-good hormones
• Can help support your entrepreneurial instincts and awaken high self-esteem. H

Five common gynecological complaints and how to handle these
Education and awareness on gynecological issues can help avert major complications for women who offer suffer in silence. Timely intervention can avert a major health crisis, says Dr. Usha Kiran, Consultant Gynecologist, and advanced Laparoscopic surgeon.
2
Menstrual Problems
What is it?
Cervical Dysplasia
What is it?
This is a condition in which lesions develop in the mouth of the cervix (or the neck of the uterus); negligence may lead to it growing into life-threatening cervical cancer. This is entirely preventable with due diligence and early intervention.
What needs to be done?
Undergo regular PAPs smears (done with a speculum, and a little brush that helps collect cells from the cervix to be examined under a microscope). Every woman must undergo a PAP smear test from the age of 21-22 every two years after
one becomes sexually active. They need to undergo PAP smear every 3-5 years up to the age of 65. PAP smears are not advised for women above 65 years.
Cervical cancer is directly linked to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). There are many types of HPV viruses - low risk and high risk- but ones which cause cancer are those in the high-risk category. These viruses are transmitted through intimate contact like any other infection but stay in the cell. Most of these viruses are maybe tackled by the immune system, which may change the cell DNA, leading to malignancy.
The test helps to pick up abnormal cells and monitor these as cells do not turn cancerous in a day. An advanced Colposcopy and biopsy is advised for moderate to severe cases. If you are HPV positive, you might require PAP smear annually.
Menstrual problems are common gynecological problems that begin with menarche (first begin menstrual cycle) when the axis between Hypothalamus gland, the pituitary gland, and the ovaries (HPO axis) is in the process of getting set up. In the first few years (2-5 years) there might be irregularity for some.
What needs to be done?
For every issue with menstrual bleeding a timely screening with the gynecologist can help. Menstrual issues get compounded if there’s stress, overexercising, under-exercising, sedentary lifestyle patterns… all these factors affect the HPO axis.
In the early stages of puberty, a girl might experience painful bleeding because of the tightness of the cervix and may faint during their period. This usually gets settled as the girl marries and experiences motherhood. In rare cases, a cervical dilation may be required, under doctor’s advisement.
Young girls who get too heavy periods are advised to undergo examination

and check their hemoglobin levels to rule out anemia. Low hemoglobin can be corrected with iron supplements prescribed by the gynecologist. For troublesome bleeding, non-hormonal medications are prescribed as hormonal medications are not given to patients below 18, because it can impact bone growth.
Menstrual problems including blood clots in periods, during the reproductive age group are triggered by heavy or intermittent flow should be checked by a doctor. Consult your gynecologists for any change in your menstruation pattern, especially if you see big clots in the flow. If there is an unusually foul odor, consult a gynecologist who will check for bacterial infections.
Intermittent bleeding between the normal period cycle is a subject of medical concern and requires proper investigation. Any delay of more than 35 days is called a late period and any period which comes within 21 days of the previous cycle is abnormal and requires proper investigation.
Women over 40 develop ovarian cysts and fibroids, or without this might experience heavy bleeding due to hormonal imbalance. Or they could be suffering from endometriosis or adenomyosis, cysts and so on. All women over 40 with any problems with their menstrual cycle, must undergo investigation with ultrasound and a hormonal profile to determine the cause.
Any bleeding for six months after menopause needs to be investigated with an ultrasound and an endometrial biopsy to rule out the possibility of cancer.
3
Urinary Incontinence What is it?
This refers to a lack of control on bladder muscles, resulting in leakage.
There are two types of urinary incontinences – Urge Incontinence and Stress Incontinence.
What needs to be done?
Stress incontinence can occur in woman after pregnancies and childbirth where the pelvic muscles get lax or after menopause, where the anatomy of the vagina and the bladder muscles gets altered and starts sagging.
Urge incontinence happens in senior women when their bladder gets irritable because of a lack of hormones and tissues thin out. They experience pain and discomfort and have to rush to the toilet with an urge to empty the bladder and experience some leaks.
For urge incontinence, there is medication and counselling with bladder retraining. In case of severe stress incontinence, the patient might require minimal invasive surgery to tighten the sagging or lax anatomy which can give good results.

Uterine tumors
What is it?
The common uterine tumors are fibroids which are usually benign. But less than five per cent could turn cancerous so consult your doctor and go in for a screening.
What needs to be done?
In cases where there are multiple fibroids, the gynecologist can advise surgery if they are distorting the uterus or causing heavy, painful, or irregular menstrual bleeding and pressure your bowel and bladder. Sometimes fibroids can turn cancerous. Usually, the older concept was leaving such fibroids alone as they shrink with menopause. However, it is advisable to undergo minimal invasive surgery for a fibroid that is 5-6 cm in size, especially when you are a long way from menopause.
Patients can undergo uterine artery embolization which involves blocking the blood vessel going to uterus and to the fibroids. However, there is a chance the uterus develops an alternative blood supply, and it is also not the best option for patients planning motherhood. For women in childbearing age, myomectomy or surgical removal of fibroids is recommended and women after menopause can opt for uterus removal.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse What is it?
Women in from the age of late fifties can suffer from pelvic prolapse because of aging and due to deliveries, both natural and Cesarean, with weakness in the ligaments of the uterus. This involves uterus prolapse, the vaginal front wall prolapses resulting in retraction of the bladder, that causes bladder irritability, frequent urination, incomplete emptying of the bladder and even incontinence. It can also cause constipation or incomplete evacuation of the bowel. If the uterus wall has prolapsed it can result in a dragging sensation, a backache and if the cervix is outside, it can result in ulcerations.
What needs to be done?
Pelvic floor exercises are recommended in younger patients who might experience a prolapse after childbirth. Mild cases can be treated with physiotherapy and pelvic floor exercises and conscious weight reduction.
In severe prolapse, uterine sling surgery is advised to anchor the uterus and cervix to different points in the pelvis, that helps get the organs in original position. Senior patients, post menopause, with grades two or three prolapses should opt for uterus removal and vaginal wall repair. H

than 100-related viruses. HPV is also responsible for some other anogenital and head and neck cancers. In men, the viruses can cause anal, penile and mouth and throat cancers. The good news is there is an easily available HPV vaccine in the market that can immunize against the virulent antigen.
cancer. We, as MSD, are proud to have supported the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention to expand its female HPV national immunization program to include males- a historic move for the country which is the first in the GCC to adopt gender-neutral vaccination for HPV.
Cervical cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in women aged 15 to 44 years in the UAE. One of the chief causes of this type of cancer is the human papillomavirus, (HPV) infections, a group of more
As part of World Immunization Week, held annually at the end of April, Ashraf Mallak, Managing Director of leading biopharmaceutical company MSD in the GCC, told Health Magazine:
Raising awareness of HPV is the cornerstone of our efforts to eliminate HPV-related diseases such as cervical
Mallak added that UAE’s move is in line with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) call to eliminate cervical cancer. “With the UAE leading the way in the fight against cervical cancer, a benchmark has been set that will surely generate more initiatives in that same direction from the region and across the globe,” he explained.
How does HPV spread?
HPV is transmitted during skinto-skin and mucosal contact. Different types of HPV cause warts on different parts of the body.

Ashraf Mallak, Managing Director of leading biopharmaceutical company MSD in the GCC, tells HEALTH about the importance of vaccines in the fight against HPV infections.
Symptoms of cervical cancer
WHO puts the symptoms of earlystage cervical cancer as:
Irregular blood spotting or light bleeding between periods in women of reproductive age. Postmenopausal spotting or bleeding.
Bleeding after sexual intercourse.
Increased vaginal discharge, sometimes foul smelling.
UAE milestones
The UAE started making inroads into HPV immunization back in 2008. “In the UAE, our journey started in 2008 when Abu Dhabi included HPV in its immunization program. MOHAP has then included the program as part of the National Immunization Program (NIP) for all schoolgirls at federal level. The UAE became the first country in the region to adopt HPV as part of the NIP,” explains Mallak.
Now, more than a decade on, he says: “HPV-related cancers continue to be a top priority for MSD as we continue to deploy efforts to prevent and eliminate cervical cancer across the Gulf Cooperation Council. Proprietary We have been working hand in hand with authorities to ensure successful implementation of vaccination programs across regions and we are now working closely on policy shaping to advance those,” Mallak added.
We are also collaborating with patient organizations such as Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP) to raise awareness on the importance of prevention of HPV and cervical cancer, through annual activities including screening and education.
Must-have jabs
Raising awareness and inoculation are key to fighting HPV and its related complications. “Vaccines are one of the most powerful innovations in the history of medicine. Some diseases don’t exist anymore, thanks to vaccines. Others have been pushed to the brink of eradication and are now easily prevented, thanks to vaccines,” explains Mallak.
How do vaccines work?
Vaccines trigger a body’s natural response to a perceived threat, thereby fortifying its defenses and reducing one’s chances to contracting the disease.
“MSD has been guided for over 130 years by the view that great medicines and vaccines change the world, inspired by its Founder George W. Merck… Our vaccines team from across the globe have been working tirelessly, discovering, developing, and delivering vaccines to protect generations from infancy to adulthood, to help prevent disease around the world. I commend them for all their efforts in bringing us closer to a world free of preventable diseases such as cervical cancer,” he adds.
There are 2.18 million women and girls in UAE who are at risk for cervical cancer caused by HPV – a simple jab can save their lives. H

Question: I am a 58-year-old recently retired professional and have been experiencing foggy vision. I fear I might have cataract and wonder how this has happened so early. What should I do?
Brendon Vaz, Dubai
Dr Saeed responds, “cataract is cloudiness of a clear, natural lens of the eyes, and it develops mostly in the aged, although it can occur at an early age in diabetic patients or following trauma or an intraocular inflammation. Most people require a cataract surgery as soon as they feel their quality of life is affected. It’s a myth to wait for the cataract to ripen or use eye drops to treat the cataract.
You need not fear undergoing the procedure as cataract surgery as it is one of the safest procedures; it is of short duration and is a painless procedure done through Phacoemulsification of the cataractous lens with an intraocular lens implantation. The patient can resume his normal life within 24 hours, post-surgery, with this modern technology.
I would advise you to not delay your decision. Please consult an Ophthalmologist if you experience foggy vision and it affects your day-to-day life.”
Question: I have been suffering from acid reflux from a long time and have been advised a colon hydrotherapy. Can you elaborate on this and if it can help?
Tina Khan, Abu Dhabi
Dr Ludmilla responds, acid reflux happens when your stomach contents move back to your oesophagus. If this becomes a regular feature than it can harm your health.
The amount of stomach acid generated depends on the signals triggered by our five senses. This signal is assimilated by our nervous system, and it begins to regulate the stomach acid when you begin eating. Owing to stress when digestion is disrupted, the food starts fermenting. When this improperly processed food reaches the intestine and colon, it is further fermented, generating toxins. That’s why to restore flow of energies, to digest food properly one needs colon hydrotherapy. If you do not eliminate toxins, then this fermented food build-up can poison you. When a person suffers acid reflux, he experiences not just acidity and indigestion but also irritability, discomfort, short temper, bad breath, heaviness, discomfort etc. He can’t feel happy or being successful in his activities at all!
Holistic medicine that includes homeopathy, ayurveda and acupuncture, can restore your digestion with increased energy flow. Colon hydrotherapy helps clear toxins and digestion and absorption.

Nutritionist,
Question: When I diet, I lose a few kilos of weight but the moment I stop , the weight immediately piles back and more than before. What should I do?
Distressed, Dubai
Deepshikha reponds, “Usually, when an individual tries out on an extreme fad food choice, such as very low carbs or very low-calorie diet, he or she gets caught in a vicious yo-yo cycle of losing and gaining weight. Please check if you are doing this. When an individual cuts back more than 500 -1000 calories per day, that affects the body’s metabolism- it slows down, as the body adapts to surviving on fewer calories. Therefore, any weight reduction that happens, is because of extreme reduced calorie intake.
The production of hunger hormone ghrelin slows down and the satiety hormone leptin goes up. The body is under stress, so it produces more cortisol which results in disruption of sleeping patterns. Sleep deprivation of even 30 mins to 1-hour triggers increase in production of hunger hormone which results in hunger pangs and therefore binges.
When the very low-calorie diet is consumed, the other sensory organs of smell and taste get sharper making a person think more of food and that too result is sudden urge to binge.
Therefore, I advise people not to set unrealistic goals of losing 4-5 kg in a week. If you lose weight gradually with a thoughtful and mindful eating pattern, combine with reasonable workouts and strength training, then you can be successful in losing substantial weight over time and keeping it off; therefore, focus on quality of food rather than quantity.

Question: I am a 35-year-old single woman working at a multinational. I am slightly overweight by about 20 pounds and often get bullied and body shamed. So much so, that I have serious body image issues and low self-confidence? Can you help?
Bushra Khan responds, at the stage you are in life, it is important to seek a bigger purpose and meaning in life. You need to re-examine your goals and modify them. Focus on your inner world, build your confidence, be in the present, make connections with people in the community - be it friends, family members and get attached to service or community work. That will help you find self-worth and fulfilment.
As for the 20 pounds you have gained, I would advise, do not let go of yourself. Examine what has gone wrong with your health. Is it poor nutrition, lack of proper fitness goals or some underlying clinical condition such as an underactive thyroid that has resulted in weight gain. Or is it emotional eating? Check and rule out things so that you can focus on real issues. Put yourself first to be able to listen to your body. Once you do that, you will be able to set goals and feel motivated to move ahead in a positive frame of mind. For deep-rooted issues, work with a therapist.

IS LIPOSUCTION FOR ME?
While liposuction is becoming more mainstream, there are still many misconceptions and queries about the procedure. Here to explain, Dr. Rani Umul Khair, plastic surgeon, reveals the facts about liposuction.
distributed bulges of fat; and/or have realistic expectations.”
Suggested latest technologies
Dr. Khair explains that she uses nearly all liposuction technologies as they become available. She adds, “Depending on the specific needs of the patient, I recommend ultrasound assisted liposuction (VASER®); LASER (diode LASER) liposuction; Renuvion (J Plasma); Argon Plasma; and radiofrequency assisted liposuction (Bodytite).”
Risks of liposuction
An overview of liposuction
Liposuction, reveals Dr. Khair, is a surgical procedure whereby a tiny 3 to 4 mm incision is created and easily hidden in areas. “Then a cannula is inserted and used to suction out the fat to slim and contour different areas of the body.”
Ideal candidates
Ideal candidates are individuals who are bothered by excess fat deposits in certain parts of the body or that do not respond to diet or
exercise, are good candidates for liposuction. She elaborates, “The ideal candidate for liposuction can be broadly identified through the following indicators: individuals over the age of 18; healthy individuals with no underlying medical conditions that can impair wound healing; individuals who are within 30 percent of their ideal weight; non-smokers; have firm and elastic skin; stable weight for at least six months with a working diet and exercise regime; abnormally
When performed by a boardcertified plastic surgeon with a vast experience in liposuction, in individuals with the right indications and at an accredited healthcare facility, the risk is minimal, she says. “Further, a close follow-up with the operating surgeon and adherence to all post-operative protocols minimizes any untoward outcome,” says Dr. Khair, however, it is a surgical procedure and like any surgical procedure carries inherent risks. She adds, “I ensure that I provide the most scientific and honest opinion to my patients. With open communication and proper planning lot of the risks can be minimized. Patients can however still experience soreness, swelling, and bruising in the operated area. Bleeding, infection, or small burns can occur, though these are rare in my practice.”
Dr. Rani Umul Khair
54 June/July 2023
The amount of aspirated fat
According to the medical literature, in one session, she explains that up to 10 percent of an individual’s body weight can be aspirated and not more than two areas of the body. “As per the guidelines set by the UAE health authorities, we are allowed to aspirate only up to five liters of fat in a single operation,” she says. “Liposuction beyond this is considered mega-liposuction and carries serious health risks and should not be performed.” It is recommended to stage liposuction if there is a need to surpass the safe limits of liposuction.
Post liposuction weight gain
As liposuction is a body contouring procedure, Dr.Khair reveals that to maintain a sustainable result of liposuction, one has to maintain a healthy lifestyle. She elaborates, “To understand why weight maintenance is important, I would like to describe the physiology of fat response to weight. The number of fat cells in an individual is fixed in number. The fat cells do not increase or decrease in number with weight gain or weight loss. However, the size of the fat cells increases with weight gain and decrease with weight loss. In surgical liposuction, we practically remove the fat cells and hence the number of fat cells is now reduced in the operated area. The fat cells removed by liposuction are permanently lost. However, to maintain the result of liposuction one must maintain weight.” Hence, following liposuction there is a possibility that if a person follows unhealthy lifestyle and gains weight, fat cells in the non-operated areas and the residual fat cells in the operated area may increase in size. A small one to two kilograms weight fluctuation, which is expected for a normal individual, will not affect the results significantly.
Who is NOT a candidate for liposuction?
Individuals with underlying medical conditions like bleeding disorders, cancer, heart disease, severe lung disease, uncontrolled diabetes, blood pressure, taking certain medications, etc.
Patients who have a history of blood clots.
Someone who has an active infection in the body. Obese individuals. Active smokers.
Individuals on unhealthy lifestyle
who are sedentary, who do not restrict calorie consumption, and who want liposuction to do the magic.
Patients with unrealistic expectations.
Patients with certain psychological disorders and those who suffer from Body dysmorphic disorders.
Patients who want to undergo liposuction to impress their partners or spouses. H
