Automatic Public Conveniences
Automatic Public Conveniences Healthmatic has been designing and managing toilets for twenty five years and we have witnessed a full repertoire of events both within and around our toilets. Our designs have adapted to withstand high levels of violence as well as more subtle issues of anti-social behaviour within the cubicles. Toilets are in the front line of public services, and will inevitably, in their long life, be subject to numerous issues. These will vary from petty criminality like stealing toilet roll through to sustained malicious damage. Automatic Public Conveniences, or APC’s for short, are the best approach to locations which might expect to be exposed to medium to high levels of anti social behaviour. APC’s employ the three most cost effective approaches to dealing with the every day problems: •
Self-Cleaning Cubicles After each user, the toilet bowl and floor will be cleaned with disinfectant water. This ensures that no matter how dirty the previous customer, the new user will have a clean and fresh experience.
This reduces labour requirements and means that an APC needs to be visited a maximum of once per day in order to offer first class service.
•
Automatic Sliding Door Opening APC’s use a sliding, as opposed to a swing, door. The door will not shut when two men try and use the toilet at the same time. At the end of the cycle, the door will open after 15 minutes of use.
This significantly reduces the prospect of anti social behaviour in the toilet and will lead to increased safety for the regular user. • Managed Fault Reporting All APC’s are PC controlled and connected by modem to our head office. We monitor nine separate channels within the cubicle in order to determine functionality at any one time. This ensures that the toilet is operational and working to full potential at all times. As a consequence of their robust design and ability to identify and deal with issues at their outset, APC’s can expect their life to exceed twenty years. Our first set of APC’s installed into Aberdeen in 1990 are still in use today, as are many more examples from the 1990’s.
Cleaning and Maintenance APC’s are typically open 24/7, but it is possible to restrict access to particular times of day. Overnight the toilet will close down for ten minutes as it gives itself a deep clean. Healthmatic provide comprehensive operational cover with a daily cleaner and preventative maintenance program. The cleaner will call once per day to ensure that the unit has not been vandalised at all, replenish consumables and sweep around the exterior. The toilet will have a dedicated engineer with back up being provided from adjacent areas. The engineer will call on the unit once per week to ensure smooth operation, and will be onsite to fix any issues within 24 hours. Some clients have different arrangements with 4 hour call out time.

Installation Options APC’s can be installed in sets of one to four. The most popular is the single, but we install doubles and triples regularly and occasional quads. Generally, unless the toilet is an area susceptible to high anti social behaviour, if the need is for more than three cubicles then the client should consider the semi automatic option. When installed as a single, this will always be a DDA compliant cubicle, with the option to add cubicles which are either 1.5m or 1m in diameter. Typically the babychange will incorporated within the DDA cubicle, but this can also be added in one or more of the other units.
Inbuild to Existing Block Many clients already have buildings in reasonable condition. We can easily retrofit the cubicles into existing toilet blocks. The most important aspect to consider is whether the toilet block is still in the right position given demographic and movement changes within an area. Don’t just use a block “because its there” - there must be purpose to it. Secondly, we can advise you on the condition and aspect of the block. It is often more efficient to knock it down and start again.
New Build With a range of different environments to cater for, streets, parks, modern and traditional architecture, Healthmatic works with most building materials to create the desired result. The quickest build is a simple modular building, clad in brick, steel or glass - either with a flat or pitched roof - and as this is the quickest, it also is very often the most economic option. Healthmatic produces a number of standard modular options, the Wessex, 2000 and the 2010 - please contact us for details. Some councils however already have architect designed structures that they wish to use, and we also work with numerous main contractors who are
often aligned with the local authority in partnership.
Client Reporting All clients can access a comprehensive report on their toilets as any time over the web. This will give them a detailed breakdown of usage, attendances and any issues. The statistics are all available for download or come in pre configured reports.
