As we prepare for the holidays with family and friends, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your efforts over the past year. Health care is not without its challenges, but in the face of significant challenges, we are making significant progress. Organizational Excellence continues to enhance our work and the care we provide to patients. Improvement is occurring at the front-line on a daily basis. Over 1500 staff, physicians and learners have participated in Intro to Lean and are learning to increase value for our patients, by reducing waste in our system. This year, we launched HSN Report Out, which allows staff to share their improvement projects and spread their learning across the organization on a monthly basis.

This past year was one of the busiest on record in the ED. Despite increased visits to the ED, we were able to improve wait times. HSN has made new developments in research, seniors care and surgery. AMRIC broke ground on its new 12,000 square-foot research facility. We expanded our “48-5” initiative for frail seniors. We introduced new surgical procedures, including a new minimally invasive procedure for rectal cancer and a new facial nerve graft operation. The Virtual Critical Care Unit earned the Ontario Health Minister’s Medal Honouring Excellence in Health Quality and Safety. HSN also reaffirmed its commitment to children. The NEO Kids Foundation was launched to advocate and raise funds for more comprehensive children’s care in northeastern Ontario.
All of our achievements are the direct result of the passionate and dedicated team of staff, physicians, learners and volunteers at HSN. In the coming year, we will continue our work to provide quality patient-centred care.
