One day, you have everything planned, and then life interrupts with a resounding, “Nope, it’s time for a detour.” Life can change in an instant, whether you are ready or not. Sometimes, the detours that impact us most are the detours of others. I recently reconnected with a long time friend. It was great to hear his voice as we laughed together, reminiscing about years past and catching up on life, golf, grand kids, and his son’s upcoming championship football game. You know that little glow nostalgia creates on the inside? I was feeling it. Everything changed the moment he said, “I just got out of the hospital.” “What?” I responded. “Yeah, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I had the surgery. Everything looks good, but this is by far the toughest thing I have ever faced.” The “C” word. It seems no one is immune! Cue my need to know more about how prostate cancer affects men. It turns out that this year, an estimated 161,360 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. For unknown reasons, the risk of prostate cancer is 74% higher in black men than in non-Hispanic white men. About 92 percent of prostate cancer is found during the local, or regional, stage when it is confined to the prostate and nearby organs. According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in men in the United States. An estimated 26,730 deaths will occur this year. While prostate cancer death rates have declined, it remains more than twice as high in black men than any other group. Keep in mind, a man’s survival depends on the stage of the disease and the specific type of prostate cancer diagnosed. Fortunately, my friend received excellent medical care and has the support of a loving family. His wife suggested surgery instead of radiation, and that turned out to be the right decision. Further test show a small sampling of cancer after his prostate was removed; 39 appointments for radiation every day for 2 months.

Fueled by Doughnuts

Run Like There’s Doughnuts at The Finish Line Rachel celebrated Montclair Bread Company’s 4000th like on Facebook with a doughnut themed 4K in 2014. She had never run before but the running bug bit her that day. She started running with a few local friends and realized that running with them was much more fun than going it alone so she created Fueled by Doughnuts. Her goal was to create a community that supported local runners and made it so that they had enough options to never have to run alone. In two years, the group has grown to almost 1500 members many of whom participate in the annual races including the 5k Doughnut Run (12/10 - sold out in 3 hours!), the Baker’s Dozen Half Marathon and Relay (3/25 - still spaces left) and the Baker’s Revenge Trail Runs (2018 schedule TBD). There are weekly runs open to all starting at 16 Label St (unless noted).: Tuesday at 5:30 am & Tuesday at 6:30 pm (coached speed work at the Brookdale Park track) Wednesday at 6:30 pm Thursday at 6:30 pm (trail runs at different locations late spring through early fall) Saturday at 8 am (7 am in the warmer seasons) Rachel and her team work to make sure that newcomers are welcomed and everyone is matched up with people running similar distances and paces. All runs end with doughnuts! In addition to the weekly runs, there are several special events throughout the year. Some of the favorites are the scavenger hunt in the spring, Oktoberfest and the annual holiday ugly sweater run and potluck coming up on 12/20. FxD started their first marathon training program this fall, coaching 30 local runners through the fall marathon season. The training program for the Baker’s Dozen Half Marathon starts January 1st and offers a virtual training plan option as well as the in person training. Interested runners can find more information on the Fueled by Doughnuts Facebook page and information on the upcoming races is available at http://www.montclairbread. com/races.

fter a series of unexpected but welcome events in the spring of 2016, Dr. Frantz Pierre-Louis and Dr. Esira Jaimie Beaubrun followed their own path and vision and opened People Care Institute in June 2017 to bring compassionate, people-centered care to Bloomfield, New Jersey and the neighboring areas. Dr. Pierre-Louis is Board Certified as an Infectious Disease Specialist and an Internist. As a graduate of the State University of Haiti Faculty of Medicine (MD), he followed his passion for Internal Medicine by successfully completing his residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Dr. Pierre-Louis then aspired to better the human condition by tackling infectious diseases through a fellowship at the University of Medicine and Dentistry - New Jersey. Dr. Beaubrun is a Board Certified Internal Medicine Specialist. After beginning her medical career also at the State University of Haiti, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, she discovered her calling in the treatment of the whole patient. Dr. Beaubrun went on to further her commitment to patient care by successfully completing her residency in internal medicine at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in New Jersey. Dr. Pierre-Louis and Dr. Beaubrun are not only partners in life and the proud parents of two daughters, but they have also paired up to bring compassionate medical care to their community. Preventative and restorative healthcare is offered to patients 18 and older at their Bloomfield office and several nearby hospitals. Both Dr. Pierre-Louis and Dr. Beaubrun are affiliated with numerous hospitals located near their office as displayed on their website peoplecarenj.com

10

www.hwfessex.com

At People Care Institute, Drs. Pierre-Louis and Beaubrun treat the whole person, not just the disease. They attach particular importance to all aspects of preventative medicine. Educating and informing patients on the health effects of nutrition, environment, supplements, and vaccinations help build positive long-term relationships. They work with and respect many other doctors in the community who also care for their patients ; they offer many age appropriate screenings for cancer and specific preventable diseases; they essentially offer personalized health coaching for a variety of health conditions and this sets them apart. Patients prefer the people-centered approach offered at People Care Institute, as evidenced by their testimonies: “Dr. Beaubrun has an extraordinary ability to connect with patients and make them feel at ease, she is honest and caring and there is no better patient’s advocate than her.” “Dr. Pierre-Louis is compassionate and humanist totally dedicated to the cause of his patients, and he practices medicine with his heart and his mind which allow him to diagnose sometimes very rare diseases that could elude many..... he seems to always have a plan for everything, if not he definitely knows where to find it “ They always strive to be accessible to their patients when needed and they go to great length to remain in contact with their patients and exceed their expectations. For example, they use reliable technology as another way to connect safely with patients through Telemedicine services which allows their patients sometimes to see them from anywhere through their computer before a more formal visit in the office. Because they value an integrative approach to health, their website and monthly blogs promote healthy behaviors and lifestyle changes that can be adapted and personalized for every patient. Drs. Pierre-Louis and Beaubrun believe health is an asset worth more than one’s bank account. It is essential that all people have healthcare providers in their corner they can rely on. They are eternally grateful to their patients and they appreciate that there is no greater gift in life, and no greater privilege, than being able to preserve it and impact it in a meaningful way.

Obesity & Cancer

If FAT Wasn’t Enough!

“Shopping for clothes that are anything besides leisure wear is painful” By Selena Ricci

T

here are few things worse than being so fat that you hate looking in the mirror. Shopping for clothes that are anything besides leisure wear is painful and don’t get me started on what it’s like to get winded when you bend down to tie your shoelaces. Even if you somehow manage to find clothes that you feel slightly confident in, you’ll quickly get thrown back down to earth when you realize that you have to purchase an extra seat every time you fly.

percent of the people diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States. More specifically, there are 13 different types of cancer that overweight and obese people are more likely to be diagnosed with. That’s right, 13 different types of cancer. With numbers like that, I knew that I needed to make a change. How Can You Decrease Your Risk of Obesity-Related Cancers? With all of the different everyday challenges I faced as a “fat” person, the wake-up call that I needed to get healthy began with that CDC study. While making healthy changes won’t transform your life overnight, gradual steps can instantly improve your overall health and reduce your risk for cancer and other obesity-related health conditions. The American Diabetes Association has some great info on losing weight at a healthy pace. They found that just 150 minutes of exercise each week and a 5 to 7 percent reduction in body weight via healthy eating can help to reduce your risk of developing diabetes by 60 percent. But this doesn’t mean that you suddenly have to hit the gym 6 times a week and live off of salad. I found that tracking my steps each day with an app on my phone was a great way to get moving.

The embarrassment of having people stare at me as the airline hostess explained that I was making other passengers uncomfortable due to my size was the most horrifying thing I had ever dealt with. While it was one of those moments where I realized that the weight was too much, reading about a recent CDC study on the cancer risks for overweight and obese people was the moment I decided to change. 13 Types of Cancer Linked to Obesity: The Moment When I Finally Said Enough Did you know that 2 out of every 3 adults in the United States is overweight or obese? While we may live in a time where people are more accepting of others, no one should be okay with tipping the scales so much that they are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than slimmer people. The everyday annoyances that come with being fat, like the inability to climb a set of stairs without losing your breath or having to shop at specialty stores for clothing are many –but what about the health risks? In the US, smoking is the only health risk related to cancer that is anywhere near as dangerous as being overweight or obese. In addition to heart disease, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, diabetes and other debilitating health conditions, cancer is a huge threat to people who are overweight and obese. In fact, CDC studies have shown that people who are overweight or obese actually make up about 40 Health Welln

Make More Healthy Choices After I started moving more, I decided to make better choices surrounding food as well. To kick off my healthy eating experiment, I started counting my calories. This helped me to quickly understand that even when I was eating healthy, I was eating portions that were way too big. By working closely with my doctor on a diet and exercise plan, I was able to improve my heart function and reduce my risk of developing those 13 types of cancer. If you are overweight or obese and the daily struggles of being fat haven’t been enough to motivate you to change, then maybe the fear of cancer will. While it’s not always easy, I can guarantee you that it’s all worth it.

Your Nutrition &Your Health By Dr. Frantz Pierre-Louis & Lloyd Pierre-Louis

W

ith the right food, medication is of no use... With the wrong food, the doctor is of no help. This is the general idea stipulated by the Ayurvedic medicine. This statement perfectly aligns with the opinions and beliefs of many people from the scientific community among others. Frederic Saldmann, a French cardiologist, nutritionist and speaker addressed relentlessly the virtues of food and even insisted that it is the most powerful and effective medication: “You are a power of nature without knowing it”. And this is a reinforcement of a concept outlined in many books such as ‘’The best medicine, it’s you!’’, ‘’ Take your health in hand’’, ‘’Your health without risk’’, among others. Besides, all these books promote the nutrition aspect of adopting specific diets to achieve and maintain good health while staving off various chronic diseases and even cancer. Speaking of diet, many studies revealed that people who repeatedly go for extreme deprivation to lose weight only get results for a short-term basis, and then get the weight back due to the ‘’yoyo effect’’. In fact, good nutrition is more about quality, diversity than extreme deprivation of certain foods, in which case the body is often depleted from essential nutrients. Moreover, “ consistently eating right (and working out) are the pillars of looking and feeling better.” And the keyword here is ‘’consistently’’: consistency is the solution for achieving this goal; it is the difference between eating healthy all day every day, versus doing so once in a while. That being said, nutrition somehow is to health what gasoline is to a car. This is fundamentally the human fuel. And with this, comes the concept of quality. By analogy, the quality of our food intake on a daily basis is more likely to guarantee longterm health than the other way around, the same way as proper, clean and high-grade gasoline is more likely to ensure the longevity and efficiency of a car motor. Finally, since we cannot live without food, isn’t good nutrition necessary for a good health?

r. Bedes Osuala has always had a great passion for helping others. At the early age of 17, he arrived in the US from Nigeria to pursue his dream of becoming a physician. Away from home and family, with little support and money, his dream to become a physician burned in his heart and mind. After earning his degree at Jersey City University, he had the choice of going to medical school or dental school and his choice was clear. With dental school, he wouldn’t have to worry about the burden of tuition, while medical school offered much less financial help. Feeling that he could make a great impact in the lives of others through dentistry, Osuala went on to attend the University of Medicine and Dentistry. He told himself, “I’ll try dental school for 2 years and if I don’t like it, I can always go back home.”

A Future in Dentistry Fast forward to 15 years later and Dr. Osuala, his family, staff and his patients are all very happy that he decided to stay. Dr. Osuala is now the proud owner of Supreme Dental Associates with 2 successful locations in New Jersey. He has a longtime practice in Orange as well as a new location in Maplewood, which has been designed to provide patients with the most advanced dental care available. As a full-service dentist, Dr. Osuala and his team provide patients of all ages with the highest-quality dental care. With a strong focus on preventative care, the staff at Supreme Dental Associates works hard to educate patients on the benefits of good oral hygiene. In addition to offering routine dental exams and cleanings, Dr. Osuala also offers extractions, root canals, fillings, traditional wire braces and Invisalign®, teeth whitening, emergency dental care and more.

patients to learn and understand more about their own oral health. With the most advanced technology available –including digital imaging– the new location allows patients to enjoy a more interactive experience. From getting a closer look at their dental scans to asking questions about their treatment plans, the team at Supreme Dental Associates is better able to provide patients with compassionate and family-friendly dental care. Compassionate and Comprehensive Dental Care for All Patients The highly-skilled and knowledgeable staff at Supreme Dental Associates value respect, caring, honesty and kindness. After many years of working with patients ranging in age from 1 to 100, Dr. Osuala’s passion for changing the lives of others through advanced oral care only continues to grow. And because of this, he and his team are dedicated to helping each of their patients enjoy the benefits of a healthy and beautiful smile. From treating common oral diseases to transforming lives with orthodontic care, nothing feels greater than seeing patients leave their offices with bright, happy smiles.

By offering a full range of general dentistry and orthodontic services, Dr. Osuala and his team are able to help patients of all ages enjoy healthy and white smiles. Many patients first visit his offices for a regular dental cleaning, only to end up coming back again and again. It is not uncommon for patients to tell Dr. Osuala that they’ve never felt more safe, comfortable and welcomed by a dentist than when they visit Supreme Dental Associates. It’s a Family Affair When visiting Supreme Dental Associates it doesn’t take long to discover what Dr. Osuala’s patients already know. From the moment you arrive, his warm and friendly personality greet you, instantly putting you at ease. Along with his longtime Lead Dental Assistant, Myriam Deshonees, Dr. Osuala works to make each patient feel comfortable and relaxed during each visit to his practice.

Lead Dental Assistant, Myriam Deshonees

Most of the patients at Supreme Dental are referrals, something that gives Dr. Osuala great pride. Once he’s treated one family member, it is not uncommon for them to bring their loved ones to come visit Dr. Osuala with all of their oral health needs. After many years serving the Orange, NJ community, his unique one-on-one approach to patient care has helped him to easily grow his practice. Creating lasting professional relationships is also something that is very important to Dr. Osuala and his staff. Making these lasting bonds and connections with each of his patients is paramount in their practice and something that has always come naturally for Dr. Osuala. With the addition of the new Maplewood location, Dr. Osuala is very excited for his

alk along Montclair’s main streets and its commitment to health and wellness is hard to miss: Yoga studios, gyms, massage therapy centers, restaurants touting organic and vegetarian options, and practitioners of traditional and alternative medicine dot the streets. All told, Montclair has 23 yoga and Pilates studios, 32 fitness centers, 14 acupuncturists, 26 chiropractors, 78 dentists, 117 personal trainers and 200+ physicians specializing in everything from pediatrics to plastic surgery to keep you looking and feeling your best. It’s hard to say when this movement began or how it started, but it just keeps growing, with no end in the number of health and wellness enterprises eager to serve this health-conscious community. Cyclebar Montclair and Souled Out Fitness, both on Bloomfield Avenue, recently opened for business. Juice Culture on Valley Road in Upper Montclair opened last summer, started by a Mom who missed the healthy smoothies and juice joints she left behind in moving from New York to Montclair. Add to this a host of non-profits working to make Montclair a healthier place for people of every age and income level. “There are two farms in Montclair and every school has a garden.” to get moving. Its motto: Bikes and Feet on Every Street. “We ’re concerned about people who don’t have cars and those who, like my daughter, might not be driving yet but need to get around independently,” says Laura Torchio, a past president and current board member. “Speed is more of a problem than volume,” she adds. So the group works with the township to support “traffic calming” measures— narrowing lanes and adding curb extensions, for example—which work better than speed limits to slow drivers down. Farming promotes health, too. “There are two farms in Montclair and every school has a garden,” says Angelica Diggs, coordinator of Montclair Community Farms. Since 2011, well over 4,000 lbs of locally grown produce have been distributed to senior residents, and increasing numbers of youth have gotten involved. In 2016, a mobile farm stand built with funds from the USDA expanded the farms’ reach. Another program, Aging in Place, set out to transform Montclair “from a good place to live to a great place to grow older.” Besides addressing issues like pedestrian safety, transportation and housing, Aging in Place launched the Montclair Institute for Lifelong Learning, featuring free exercise, art and educational classes for those 55 and up.

For some older residents, Montclair’s Seniors in Taxis program is the ideal health promoter. Josie Zeman, 76, goes to the Y on weekdays. But walking there, working out and running errands is too much. So she uses the discounted taxi vouchers—“For $15, I get $30 worth of rides”—to get to the Y. “Afterwards I can walk to the library or Whole Foods or wherever else I need to go,” Zeman says. If the destination is a health-related facility, there’s no dearth of places to go. Some, like Montclair South Dental on Orange Road, have been in town for years. Owner Fara Azar, DMD, bought the practice in 2006 after working there for a decade, her husband and office manager, Sahba Azar, says. The practice provides full-service dentistry, including cosmetic and restorative procedures, orthodontics, periodontics and traditional treatment. “We cater to people of all ages with all kinds of oral health needs,” he says. Noting that dental problems can adversely affect overall health, he adds, “We have a caring staff who care about our patients’ wellbeing. Their oral health and general health are what we focus on.” At Lemongrass, a store and studio on South Fullerton Avenue that opened in 2015, the focus is on healing— through meditation, yoga, rituals involving ancient Tibetan singing bowls, and more. Owners Sylvia and Dhruba Neupane moved here with their children in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake in Nepal. Why Montclair? “I studied several towns and thought this was a good spiritual place,” Dhruba says. “It is a pleasure to bring our authentic culture and spiritual practice here.” Church Street’s Sweetberry Bowls—called Playa Bowls until November, when owners Desi Saran and Frankie Lo Piccolo, rebranded—chose Montclair because it’s a health-conscious town. “We believe our super fruit bowl shop, which specializes in acai, pitaya (passion fruit), coconut and greens, provides a positive addition to the varieties of health food found here,” Lo Piccolo says. The latest addition? Healthy choices for pets. Lukas and Berube Healthy Pet Markets on South Fullerton Avenue opened for business a few days ago.

Alkaline water is a liquid and anti-oxidant that neutralizes the free radicals in the body responsible for aging and cancer. The Fighter Civil rights attorney, Ali Freeman is familiar with fighting for others. But when diabetes attacked his health, he discovered that his toughest battle yet would be to spar for his own life.

A

Photos by: E Laney

By Melissa Shelby

li Freeman, an undisputed medical champion has faced a series of hard-hitting medical blows as a result of being a diabetic. Particularly, complete loss of vision in one eye, level-five kidney failure and a quadruple by-pass heart surgery. The health heavyweight has a strong desire to inform others about the seriousness of the silent killer. Sitting upright in a light blue dialysis chair, Freeman exhales while peering at the needle that enters his left arm. For the past seven months, three days a week, four hours each day, he visits Beaumont Hospital for the routine procedure. He is hooked up to a dialysis machine that performs the function of eliminating toxins and excess fluid from the body, a task that kidney failure limits his body of completing alone. Freeman often wishes that he would have followed his advice. At 32 years-old, Freeman was diagnosed as a type-2 diabetic. He was given a glucose meter and began taking Glugophage and Lisinopril for maintenance. While Freeman attended regular doctor’s appointments, he did not test his blood sugar as often as he was instructed to. According to Freeman, two decades ago the cost of the testing strip was pricey. Each strip was $1.25 testing four to five times per day would cost him between $35 and $50 per week, which was out of his budget. Therefore, instead of testing four to five times per day, he tested four to five times per week. FACTS According to the American Diabetes Association, every 21 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes. Nearly 21 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes; almost one-third, or 6.2 million people, are unaware they have the disease. Diabetes is a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose levels that result from defects in the body’s ability to produce and/or use insulin. FORECAST Pre-diabetes, a condition that put individuals at a greater risk for developing type-2 diabetes, the person’s cells become resistant to the action of the insulin, the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin to combat this resistance, according to the

30

www.hwfessex.com

Mayo Clinic. Instead of moving into the person’s cells where it is needed for energy, sugar builds up in the bloodstream. “Too often, pre-diabetes is dismissed or not taken seriously,” said Dr. Jim Lederer, Vice President of clinical improvement for Novant Health, a non-profit healthcare organization. “Early diagnosis and intervention are critical to reduce the chances of developing diabetes and the inevitable complications that come with the disease.” FAMILY Early on Freeman understood that diabetes, the number four killer amongst African Americans was present in his family history. His mother, a diabetic amputee lost her battle with the disease, dying of renal failure at the tender age of 53. For this reason, Freeman never drank alcohol or used drugs. Still, be-

cause of his stature 6’3, weighing nearly 300lbs, he was not surprised when he was told that he was pre-diabetic at 25 years-old. ROUND I The blood of a diabetic runs like syrup, very slow, making it hard to get to each part of the body. The smaller limbs, such as the toes, legs and feet often go without oxygen, which leads to amputation. In Freeman’s case, blood was not flowing into the tiny vessels of the eyes or kidneys. Having experienced the burst of blood vessels in his eyes, Freeman felt his vision worsening. In an attempt to save his sight he had laser eye surgery. Ultimately, he lost complete vision in one eye.

High Intensity Interval Training

ROUND II Hearts were all over the shelves inside of Walgreen’s, some filled with chocolates and others on the front of greeting cards. Freeman went in to develop photos and left with yet another stinging blow. The pharmacist voice over the loud speaker kept announcing that the store was doing free blood pressure checks. He would have ignored it, had she only said it once, but over and over he was reminded that it was fast and free. Freeman’s blood pressure read was, 200/170 way out of normal range. He was sent directly to the hospital. On that day, he found out that he was at a LEVEL FIVE kidney failure and immediately put on dialysis. According to Freeman, his doctor’s words were honest and direct, “If you do not get this under control, you will die very early”. Determined to combat diabetes, Freeman instantly changed his diet and physical activity. Daily, he walked three miles, cut sugars and unhealthy carbohydrates. One year later, Freeman had shed a whopping fifty pounds. When he went back to the doctor, he no longer needed insulin or blood pressure pills. His A1C1 reading 6.4 was good, his diabetic flow finally controlled. ROUND III A conversation about an unexpected birthday gift would lead Freeman to another gut-wrenching discovery. Lauren Wilson, decided that she would make her 31st birthday memorable by donating one of her kidneys to her father. But before the two could undergo the surgery, Freeman would need to have a cardiac catherization, to make sure that his heart could withstand the kidney transplant. The heart check showed alarming results, both of Freeman’s coronary arteries were blocked. The left artery was blocked 75 percent and the right – a staggering 90 percent. Freeman underwent a quadruple bypass surgery that relieved both blocked arteries. After two months of recovery, Freeman received cardiac clearance – just in time to walk his little girl down the aisle. UNAMIOUS DECISION Freeman’s medical history is extensive, his physical and emotional journey very long. Still, he stands, 6’3 inches of determination and strength. As he prepares for his forthcoming kidney transplant, he understands the complications and challenges that lie ahead - armed with endurance, he’s prepared. “I don’t worry about what could happen, I could have had a heart attack but God didn’t want me to. I could have stroked out, but God didn’t want me to. I’m still here, because God wants me to be”.

Survivor’s story By Jane Meggitt

“As a woman who had always been on top of her game in terms of her appearance, losing hair was hard.”

E

very woman with breast cancer goes through that specific moment when she suspects something is wrong. For Debra Raines, it was at age 44, in 2004, while trying on outfits in a store in preparation for a vacation. Right there, in the dressing room, she felt a lump in her breast. She’d had false alarms before, because her breasts tended toward the cystic, but she knew this needed checking and soon arranged for a mammography.

Becoming a Member of the Club No One Wants to Join There was urgency in the voice mail message from her primary care physician, telling her to follow up with a breast specialist immediately. She makes an appointment with the specialist, but the news is still unreal: “You have cancer.” While the doctor talks about the next step, Debra feels like she’s having an out-of-body experience. Her first impulse is to schedule the biopsy for another time, but the doctor is having none of it, and is ready with the syringe. Afterward, the doctor speaks of surgery, chemo and the rest, but she was going through emotional overload. Returning to work after the appointment, she tells her supervisor about her diagnosis and starts to cry.

32

www.hwfessex.com

Stage Two Cancer Treatment Debra’s diagnosis was stage 2 breast cancer, for which she underwent 18 months of treatment. “This disease is known to be very aggressive in women of color. Our tumors tend to be more aggressive. That’s another reason why our community is disproportionately affected... we have a higher mortality rate from this disease than Caucasian women,” she says. Debra had a lumpectomy after getting three professional opinions. After the lumpectomy, she went through eight sessions of chemotherapy, scheduled every two weeks. After chemo, she started daily radiation, Monday thru Friday, for six weeks. “After radiation, my oncologist informed me that a new treatment had come out that he thought would also help benefit me, and he recommended that I have the treatment for a year,” she says. However, this treatment, called Herceptin, was tough on her body and Debra was only able to tolerate it for six months. Enduring Chemotherapy and Hair Loss Chemotherapy kills cancer cells and can keep the disease from recurring, but it’s a difficult journey. Some women sail through the chemo experience with relatively few side effects, but she was not so lucky. The side effects

“Debra is conscious of her diet, exercises daily, and embraces overall wellness as a lifestyle.” know that each day that I am healthy and able to get out of bed on my own and get myself to work and put in a productive day is a blessing from God,” she says. Do Your Research and Take Care of Yourself So what advice does Debra have for the thousands of women – and men – who will find out they have breast cancer this year? Get your tablets, laptops, mobile devices or pen and paper and do your research,” she says. Look up the doctors you plan to see, and check out at least three facilities, if possible, where you can go for care. Always get a second opinion, no matter how reputable your initial breast specialist. Be selfish as you go through the cancer journey, as you take your well-being into your own hands. Remove yourself from toxic people and situations, if you want complete healing. Cancer is a blessing as well as a curse, as it can lead to development of your spiritual growth.

affected her nerves, resulting in burning and tingling sensations in her hands and feet. Then, of course, there was losing her hair. As a woman who had always been on top of her game in terms of her appearance, losing hair was hard. One Sunday in the midst of her chemo treatments she went to church, wearing a hat to disguise her bald head. Everyone was happy to see her, but she was overwhelmed with fear that the hat would fall off. That night, she experienced a bit of divine intervention. A music awards show was on TV, and Melissa Etheridge, also going through chemo, was onstage rocking and completely bald. “From that moment on, I felt encouraged and empowered to wear my bald head with pride. After seeing her, I wore it as a badge of honor. That’s what God can do,” she says.

Debra is conscious of her diet, exercises daily, and embraces overall wellness as a lifestyle. “Building and maintaining my spirituality is very important to my well-being also. I have a strong faith and am grateful to my heavenly Father for all that He has done for me by bringing me through a life changing experience,” she says.

Surviving Eleven years have passed since Debra became a breast cancer survivor. Now, she helps others on the journey as she herself was helped. Along with her family, who stayed strong and were always there for her, she relied on the Sisters Network of Central New Jersey. These days, she lives life with the understanding that she must stay relentless in being physically active. She never takes life, or time, for granted. “I know that each day is a gift. I

can Heart Association reports that “more than one-third (about 35%) of U.S. adults are obese (more than 78 million adults).” Perhaps even more disturbing is that almost 32% of 2 to 19-year old in the United States fall into the overweight or obese categories. Continuing to carry too much fat for long periods of time begins to harm how well many body systems function. Besides heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke are more common in people who are overweight. Workplace Support Comes at the Right Time Attacking obesity early is key to preventing many of the worst health effects. Many workplaces have begun to offer savings in health insurance costs for employees who meet certain wellness criteria. Brenda Price, an overworked accountant, was thrilled when her office joined a wellness cooperative. She says that some co-workers just want to slim up for the summer, but she knows several people who have diabetes and high blood pressure linked directly to obesity. Many programs offer access to healthy eating and lifestyle education classes, along with access to local fitness centers. It is common for workplaces to support weight loss initiatives through proper diet and exercise.

t the age of 38, Nicole Harmon decided it was time she learned first hand what drew so many people to the gym. She had struggled with her weight since middle school, and each new fad diet just caused the yo-yo effect. Each new stage of life added fat that never seemed to stay off for long. Being considered obese drained her both emotionally and physically. Knee braces and ankle wraps could not keep up with her worn joints. Her biggest worry came the day her doctor diagnosed her with heart disease. Searching for a Healthy Lifestyle Harmon began the search for a fitness center close to her home. She settled on a local gym in Essex County but was admittedly concerned about the stares she knew she’d get. “There was no doubt in my mind that the judgment would be palpable. I could not have been more wrong,” she said. According to Harmon, the seasoned members made her feel like she belonged from day one. If she was feeling discouraged, they filled the gap and provided the motivation she needed to keep moving forward toward her weight loss goals. After going from 283 lbs to 176 lbs in 14 months, she’s thrilled with her progress. “I knew it was time to start this journey because I only have one heart, and it was beginning to fail,” she said. “Transitioning to a healthy lifestyle was tough at first, but eventually I realized how much easier it was to do things like walk up the stairs at work. Seeing the physical benefits of exercise in the mirror was a bonus.” There were no Copyscape matches found. Healthy Eating Leads the Charge Against Obesity Harmon is not alone in her battle against obesity. The Ameri-

Prepare Traditional Dishes With A Healthy Spin If you are tasked with bringing a dish or making the whole meal you obviously have more sway over what you make. When you prepare traditional dishes with a healthy spin, it can make the meal much better for you. Things like cauliflower macaroni and cheese, gravy made without butter, or desserts baked with applesauce instead of oil are a few options. There are so many great substitutions you can make that you’ll never be hungry or feel like you’re missing out.

five Tips For

Healthy Eating at the Holidays

he holidays can be a difficult time to face if you’re trying to watch your weight. All those delectable treats and goodies at every meal can be tough to pass up. You can indulge a bit at the holidays even if you’re trying to practice healthy eating habits. After all, you don’t want to have extra pounds to shed with a brand new health resolution after New Years. Here are 5 tips for healthy eating to get you through the holidays.

Avoid Overeating The best way to put a firm obstacle on the road to obesity is to really stop overeating. It’s all about mindful awareness of when you are just about full. When you are eating, you don’t want to get overly full. Once you feel that total fullness, you’ve already overeaten. Learn to stop when you feel satisfied, but not grossly full. This can be done with some practice. Another bonus tip is that when you are at a holiday gathering for a meal, only eat half of what is on your plate. Save the rest in a “doggie bag” or bring your own reusable to-go container to take the rest for later. Make Good Substitutions This is easier said than done, but you can do it! A little bit of confidence goes a long way. Making good substitutions can be as easy as choosing a healthy choice over a less healthy one. For example, when faced with an appetizer platter, focus on beneficial and filling vegetable choices instead of fried foods, cured meats, or fat-filled cheeses. Salsa over creamy dips. Fruit for dessert instead of pie.

Never Go To A Party Starving This is a great tip to prevent binge eating at parties. Always have a healthy snack before you go. Make sure as well that you’re drinking lots of water because sometimes thirst can be mistaken as hunger. Stop Stressing Stress can be a contributor to weight gain. With that being said, stop stressing about the actual holiday dates. Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day are only three days. It’s just a few days to worry about, so make sure you enjoy time with family and friends without worrying excessively about your weight loss. Those are the days to splurge a little, if you’re able to watch your healthy eating plan the rest of the holiday season.

Medical trends will help you improve your health and well-being

S

ome of the biggest healthcare and medical trends for 2018 have nothing to do with gadgets or new medical techniques. The increased number of generics that will be released over the next few years is due to the expiration of the original patents. This, combined with the abundance of new, technological advancements, are two of the most important trends when it comes to reducing the cost, as well as the effectiveness of medical treatment plans. The following trends affect all types of healthcare ranging from effective treatment options for managing pain to lifestyle tools that make living healthy easy and cost-effective.

PRP Injections with Stem Cells and Growth Factors Platelet-rich plasma injections use the patients own stem cells and growth factoring agents to stimulate healing on a cellular level. Although it has been used over the past few years, the procedure has become more popular because it uses the patients own cells to elicit a healing response.

Apps and Exercise Devices like the new Fitbit Ionic® Watch combines the latest apps with the features of your smartphone. The apps in the past were primarily to help individuals who were trying to regain their place in the gym. Newer, more advanced apps are being designed to track the person’s progress and communicate with

Wireless Technology to Prevent Heart Failure Cardiologists can now have the technology to place small wireless sensors directly into the pulmonary artery. This allows it to measure the amount of pressure in the artery and send data directly back to the doctor where it can be used to prevent serious heart attacks or other types of cardiovascular/pulmonary distress.

Genetic Testing for Personalized Medical Care Advancements in genetic testing have made it cost-effective for the development of personalized treatment plans. Doctors can now order genetic testing that allows them to customize a patient’s treatment plan according to their exact body chemistry and structural make-up. Genetic testing can identify the potential risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other serious health conditions.

Mobile Healthcare Much like the apps we use to monitor our exercise and weight loss patterns, there are programs for our phones and tablets that allow us to communicate effectively with our healthcare providers. This type of mobile healthcare allows you to visit your doctor when a physical visit to the doctor isn’t possible.

Over three years later, it’s grown into the hottest HIIT studio in New Jersey. Founder Adrienne Felder taught group exercise classes for over 15 years in the competitive and tough fitness world and realized that it wasn’t always easy to fit in and feel welcome. This motivated her to develop a place where people felt at home and could reach their goals without fear of judgement. After teaching large classes in several regional fitness chains, Adrienne conceptualized an intimate place where every person felt like they were receiving one-on-one training. That place is architect studios: a place built on love, laughter and (A LOT) of sweat.
