At Maryland Health Magazine, we understand the vital importance of taking health seriously. Heart disease, cancer, and diabetes have touched many of our lives, either personally or through someone we know.
We are seeing an increasing number of multigenerational households nationwide. According to Pew Research, 20% of women aged 65 and up live in such households compared to 15% of men. When all options have been exhausted, families face the difficult decision of choosing between nursing home care or at home care.
There is no greater cause or time spent than becoming educated, informed, and active participants in caring for our health.
Obesity, a growing concern across the nation, is linked with a higher risk of developing chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. FVENUS DENTAL LAB
YOUR 24/7 SOLUTION FOR DENTURE AND PARTIAL REPAIR WHILE YOU WAIT!
BY JASMINE WHEELER
Its late Friday night and your partial or dentures break, and you are hours away from an important meeting or social event. Unfortunately, every dentist and dental office you call is closed. For many people, broken dentures or partials are more than a minor inconvenience; they can impact speech, appearance, and overall confidence. This is where Venus Dental Lab, located in Gaithersburg, MD, comes to the rescue.
ounded by Fred Kamali, a dental technician with over 40 years of experience, Venus Dental Lab has become a go-to resource in Montgomery County and surrounding communities for patients needing emergency denture repairs. While many dental practices require patients to wait days for denture or partial repairs, Fred recognized the pressing need for a more immediate solution. Offering 24/7 emergency repair services, Venus Dental Lab can help those in critical need of quick, high-quality dental solutions.
| The Origin of a Crucial Service
Dental Lab Inc
Fred’s journey to providing emergency denture and partial repairs began in an unexpected way. About 15 years ago, a man walked into his lab, desperately seeking a quick fix for his broken partial. At the time, Fred primarily repaired dentures and partials sent to him by local dental practices, but this client’s story left an impression. The man couldn’t afford a new partial and was frustrated by the long wait times at his dental office. He asked Fred, “Can you fix it for me right away?”
Fred agreed, and a short time later the repair was complete. The man was both surprised and grateful—not just by the speed of the service but by the reasonable cost. He even suggested that Fred advertise this unique, fast service, convinced that many others would benefit from the convenience.
Although Fred was initially skeptical, he decided to give it a try. When the first flyers went out in the mail, the response was overwhelming. The phones started ringing non-stop, proving that there was indeed a significant demand for immediate, affordable denture repair.
Over the years, Venus Dental Lab has shifted its focus away from repairing dentures for dental practices and now serves only individual patients. By offering 24/7 emergency services, Fred has transformed Venus Dental Lab into a lifeline for people in need of urgent denture repairs. It’s not uncommon for Fred to receive calls late at night from patients who are in a bind.
In one such instance, a woman called around 11 p.m., saying she had broken her dentures and had an important meeting the next morning. She was surprised that Fred even answered the phone. He calmly responded, “It takes me 15 minutes to get to the lab, how long will it take you?” In under an hour, the woman left the lab with her dentures fully repaired, ready for her meeting the next day.
OMGOSH!! I had the WORST day, as I fell and my poor teeth chipped! I cried and cried, as this is a huge blow to self esteem!! My bf googled and the ONLY place open was VENUS, and to our surprise…they are open 24/7!!!
Thank you so much for comforting me, assuring me and building me back to happiness like Humpty Dumty !! Lol. I’m so so grateful. Love always
| Dedication to the Community’s Dental Needs
This level of dedication is what sets Venus Dental Lab apart. Fred understands that dentures are more than just dental appliances—they’re essential to a person’s daily life. His experience as a dental technician allows him to provide fast, expert repairs, ensuring that his clients can go

My lower denture broke in half late Friday night. I called various dentist offices Saturday morning and most couldn’t see me until Monday at the earliest, most didn’t have a dental lab onsite and one even stated that they wouldn’t repair a denture made by another dentist and I’d have to get a new one. I found Venus Dental Lab online and called. I went in at 10:15 and left one hour later with my denture in once piece. I’m so grateful not to take time off work and to have the issue resolved while I waited. I’m very happy and highly recommend cutting out the dentist middle-man.
about their lives with minimal disruption. Fred’s story is a testament to the importance of recognizing and responding to the needs of the community. While many dental labs may operate strictly during business hours, Venus Dental Lab is available 24/7 because dental emergencies don’t always happen at convenient times. Fred’s dedication to his craft and
his clients has made him a trusted name in Gaithersburg and throughout the state of Maryland and beyond.
In celebration of over 40 years in the dental technology field, Fred continues to be a beacon of reliability for those in need of denture and partial repairs. Whether it’s a late-night emergency or a last-minute repair before a big event, Venus Dental Lab is committed to providing timely, affordable, and expert service.

THE HEART HEALTH FOUNDATION: to
A LIFELINE HEART HEALTH AND PREVENTION
In the late hours of a seemingly ordinary evening, Dr. John Martin, MD, MBA, FACS, a seasoned vascular surgeon, faced a harrowing succession of emergencies: a fatal ruptured aneurysm, a stroke from carotid artery plaque, and a cardiac arrest. Each patient’s condition was preventable, highlighting a grim reality in healthcare — too often, treatment is a race against time that could have been preempted with early detection. This pivotal night sparked a transformative idea in Dr. Martin’s mind, leading to the creation of The Heart Health Foundation (HHF), a beacon of hope dedicated to combating heart and vascular diseases through proactive measures.
| How It All Started
Dr. John Martin was inspired to start The Heart Health Foundation in 2000 after a particularly hard day at the hospital, witnessing three patients die from complications due to cardiovascular disease. Each of these lives could have been saved if their conditions had been detected and treated before the emergencies that brought them to the hospital.
On his drive home that night, Dr. Martin decided to take action. The next day, he informed his team about his vision for a screening program that would be different: it would be free, accompanied by extensive education, easy to understand, and not aimed at generating referrals for his practice. Instead, the focus was on sending patients back to their primary care doctors with the necessary information to manage their health. Thus, The Heart Health Foundation and the Dare to C.A.R.E. (DTC) initiative were born.
| The Scourge of Cardiovascular Disease
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death globally, claiming approximately 17.9 million lives each year according to the World Health Organization.1 In the United States, one person dies every 33 seconds from cardiovascular disease. In 2022, 702,880 people died from heart disease. That’s the equivalent of 1 in every 5 deaths.2 These statistics underscore the critical need for initiatives like those spearheaded by HHF, focusing on prevention and early detection to drastically reduce mortality rates.
| Mission of The Heart Health Foundation
At its core, HHF is committed to saving lives by reducing the incidence and impact of heart disease, particularly in at-risk and underserved communities. The foundation’s mission is twofold: to offer free screenings that can detect heart and vascular diseases before they become life-threatening, and to provide educational programs that empower individuals to take charge of their heart health. The free screening program, Dare to C.A.R.E. (Carotid Artery, Abdominal Aorta, Renal Artery, Extremity Artery Disease), is a cornerstone of this mission. It’s designed to transform community health dynamics by making prevention accessible to all, regardless of socio-economic status. Since its inception, nearly 70,000 Anne Arundel County residents have been screened for risks of cardiovascular disease, a testament to the foundation’s dedication and reach.
| From Citizen to Patient to Director: Elaine Furgeson’s Journey
Elaine Furgeson’s journey with HHF is both personal and inspirational. Today, she is the Executive Director of HHF, a position she has held for 19 years, but that’s not how she started. Her involvement began with her daughter, who worked at the hospital and volunteered with the Dare to C.A.R.E. program.
Elaine recalls those early days vividly: “My daughter worked at the hospital and worked with the program a little bit; she was volunteering. We used to do these big night lectures, and the next
night we would do a screening.” It was during one of these screenings that Elaine’s own life took an unexpected turn.
Her daughter had urged her father to attend a screening, knowing the family’s history of cardiovascular disease. Elaine didn’t plan to go herself, convinced that she had no risk factors. But when her daughter insisted, saying, “Mom, if I sign you up, he will probably go,” Elaine agreed, despite her reservations. “She signed me up, even though I shouldn’t have gone. Guess whose carotids were 99% blocked? It was me. I could not believe it,” Elaine says, still struck by the shock of the discovery.
The diagnosis came as a complete surprise to Elaine, who had been in her early fifties at the time. “I was in such a state of shock, I went into shock and had to be rushed to the emergency room. Two weeks later, I had the surgery.” This life-altering experience not only saved her life but also led her to become deeply involved with HHF.
Dr. Martin recognized Elaine’s potential to inspire others through her story. He invited her to share her experience, and she quickly became a powerful advocate for HHF. Under the guidance of Elaine Furgeson, HHF has flourished, expanding its reach and deepening its impact. Furgeson, who brings a wealth of experience in non-profit management and a deep passion for community health, has been instrumental in driving the foundation’s programs. Her leadership is characterized by a commitment to excellence and a relentless pursuit of community well-being, ensuring that the foundation’s activities are both effective and inclusive.
| The Role of Chesapeake Medical Imaging
Chesapeake Medical Imaging, under the leadership of Dr. Mark Baganz, has been a key partner in the Dare to C.A.R.E. initiative for over four years. Dr. Baganz, who has known Dr. Martin for many years, was immediately drawn to the Foundation’s mission.
“We’ve admired the organization for many years and were honored to work with them,” Dr. Baganz says. “Dr. Martin has an impeccable reputation for doing great work professionally and is very involved in philanthropic causes. Vascular disease is epidemic in this country, especially in certain communities. The fact that there is a charitable organization providing free screenings with no strings attached is a testament to Dr. Martin and everyone in the organization.”
This partnership has been particularly impactful in areas with high vascular disease risk, such as Prince George’s County and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Chesapeake Medical Imaging provides the necessary equipment and facilities to ensure these communities receive the care they need.
Chesapeake medical Imaging is a Radiology practice with 12 offices throughout Maryland, www.cmirad.net.
| The Cornerstone of HHF:
Free Screening Events
A cornerstone of HHF’s strategy is its free screening events, which have become a hallmark of the foundation’s efforts to combat heart disease. These events are held quarterly and begin with an educational lecture followed by a day of screenings. The format is designed to not only assess but also to educate participants about their health status and risks.
Dr. Martin likens the effort to “emptying the ocean with a spoon,” a metaphor for the daunting task of tackling heart disease one individual at a time. However, through persistent efforts and community engagement, these events have grown
Dr. John D. Martin receives Non Profit of the Year 2023 from Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce.
in scale and efficacy, drawing more participants and garnering community support.
Through extensive fundraising and community collaboration, Dr. Martin and his team have enabled HHF to offer these lifesaving services. The screenings are comprehensive, checking for common yet deadly conditions like aneurysms and artery blockages, which, if caught early, can be managed with a high rate of success.
The Heart Health Foundation exemplifies the power of proactive healthcare. Through its free screening events, educational programs, and dedicated leadership, HHF is not just treating diseases — it’s preventing them, thereby reshaping the narrative of cardiovascular health in at-risk and underserved communities.
As HHF continues to expand its reach, its impact echoes Dr. Martin’s initial realization: the real solution to combating cardiovascular disease lies not in treating the condition, but in preventing it before it strikes.

Meritus Health Leadership in Diversity and Equity Council holds event to highlight the role of diversity, equity, inclusion in healthcare.
HEALTH EQUITY SUMMIT focuses on ‘building quality care in our communities’
HAGERSTOWN, Md. — The Leadership in Diversity and Equity Council at Meritus Health recently held its first Health Equity Summit, “Building Quality Care in our Communities.”
The Oct. 23 summit focused on the efforts by various organizations throughout Maryland to address health disparities, foster diversity in the workforce, and provide responsive care that recognizes the different backgrounds and experiences of patients.
“The commitment to promote equitable practices and to eliminate disparities ultimately results in the core work of improving quality and patient safety,” said Chante Richardson, Ph.D., MBA, the associate dean of health equity, diversity and inclusion at the Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine, which is set to open in 2025.
High-quality and equitable healthcare plays a pivotal role in achieving health equity, Richardson said.
“It is crucial for healthcare providers to address systemic, avoidable, predictable, and unjust differences in access, treatment, and outcomes among individuals and populations,” she said.
The summit was meant to facilitate collaborative learning among diverse professionals, speakers, and presenters, enabling the exchange of innovative ideas and recommendations, fostering collaborations, and guiding future
initiatives to create a society where everyone can lead a healthy life.
The day’s objectives included catalyzing systemic change for diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare, exploring actionable strategies to tackle health disparities, and building a cohesive community to address disparities in care.

THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY HOPE LODGE COMMUNITIES: FOR CANCER PATIENTS WHO NEED TO TRAVEL FAR FOR TREATMENT
Tina Martin and David Medford were high school sweethearts who went to the prom together, but lost touch over the years.
Thirty-five years later, the pair rekindled their love story through social media, and now Tina considers herself blessed to have David by her side as her caregiver helping her navigate a very rare, aggressive cancer called AITL (angioimmunoblastic t-cell lymphoma).
“God put us together,” said Tina. “We were meant to be.”
The pair live in Windsor, Pennsylvania. Tina was misdiagnosed twice before she received an accurate diagnosis at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. The drive from their home to Johns Hopkins for treatment takes one and a half hours, so the couple were incredibly grateful to stay cost-free at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge Baltimore, one of 32 American Cancer Society Hope Lodge communities
in the U.S. and Puerto Rico where cancer patients who need to travel long distance for cancer treatment can stay.
“There’s no way we could afford a hotel,” said Tina, who is on disability and has been receiving cancer treatment for the past two years. This was their second Hope Lodge stay for 55 days so that Tina could receive a bone marrow transplant. Their previous stay was three weeks.
The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge communities across the country provide a free place to stay during treatment to remove cost barriers to care so that people with cancer can focus on getting
better. These communities provide comfortable guest suites with private baths, as well as inviting spaces with all the comforts of home, including a communal kitchen where guests can store their groceries and prepare their own meals, dining area, laundry rooms, and places to gather or find a quiet respite – all at no cost to guests.
“Hope Lodge is wonderful. I can sleep so well here. The staff are so accommodating. Having access to a kitchen is absolutely great. And the free transportation van to the hospital makes it so possible to be treated. Without Hope Lodge, I wouldn’t be able to get this treatment. I feel grateful and blessed,” said Tina.
Hope Lodge guests don’t just find a place to stay – they find a community of support and an emotional connection with others facing the same journey.
“As a caregiver, I have a sense of peace and security at Hope Lodge,” said David. “I can take better care of Tina here. Hope Lodge gives us hope. It truly takes a village. It makes me believe that we can do this.”
Since 1970, Hope Lodge communities have provided more than six-million-night stays to cancer patients. Approximately 29,000 patients and caregivers are hosted annually, providing approximately 500,000 total nights of stays and saving guests $55 million in total lodging costs. With hotel rooms
“Hope Lodge is more than just a room, more than just a space for me to stay. It was, and it still is, relief to my heart and to my soul.”
Hilda, Cancer Survivor
costing an average of $190 a night and many patients needing weeks or months of outpatient treatment, the average guest’s savings for lodging is $9,000.
Volunteer groups often visit their local Hope Lodge to host communal guest dinners and activities such as Bingo, games, arts and crafts, yoga, or meditation, and to give concerts or play live music.
Donations are also welcome to help support Hope Lodge operations and supplies.
The 26-guest room Baltimore Hope Lodge, where Tina and David stayed, is in the midst of a Capital Campaign to build a new, larger, reimagined, state-of-the-art Hope Lodge that will feature eight additional guest rooms with private bathrooms, increasing its capacity by 30%. Hope Lodge Baltimore is often full with a waiting list. The future, 34-guest room Hope Lodge will help decrease barriers to care and increase health equity. It will be located across from the present Hope Lodge that opened in 1987 on West Lexington Street on the University of Maryland campus. For information and to donate to the Hope Lodge Baltimore Capital Campaign, see www. hopeishomebaltimore.org.

THE VICIOUS GRIP OF ADDICTION: A Personal Journey Through Despair
BY RODNEY FOLMAR
IT WAS A CHAIN OF EVENTS THAT NO ONE COULD HAVE FORESEEN — A MERCILESS DESCENT INTO THE ABYSS OF ADDICTION THAT ULTIMATELY CLAIMED MY SISTER’S LIFE. THE JOURNEY I EMBARKED ON, WITNESSING ADDICTION FIRSTHAND OF SOMEONE I LOVED, HAS LEFT ME WITH A PROFOUND UNDERSTANDING OF THE COMPLEXITIES AND DEVASTATION THAT ADDICTION CAN BRING.
IN THIS ARTICLE, I WILL ATTEMPT TO EXPLORE ADDICTION FROM BOTH A PERSONAL AND MEDICAL PERSPECTIVE, DELVING INTO THE VARIOUS FORMS IT CAN TAKE, SUCH AS ALCOHOLISM, DRUG ADDICTION, GAMBLING, SEX ADDICTION, FOOD ADDICTION, SMOKING, AND VAPING.
Iw ill also attempt to unravel the enigmatic question that plagues the minds of those who watch their friends and loved ones succumb to the clutches of addiction: why do people continue to engage in behaviors they know, or should know, will harm, or even kill them?
| The Grim Unfolding
“Typically, the start of addiction arises from the need to fill a void. In a world full of ongoing difficulty and strife, human beings need effective coping mechanisms to manage our mental and emotional health. Without them, in our most vulnerable times, any one of us could find ourselves seeking relief through ineffective coping behaviors and habits.”
India B. Jackson, LGPC OMHC Mental Health Therapist GY Counseling, LLC.
For years, my sister remained vehemently opposed to alcohol. The mere whiff of it in our house or on my breath was enough to ignite a fierce argument.
Her stance was unwavering, and I respected it, sometimes. But then, her life took an unexpected turn when she began working in an automobile plant. As far as I can recall, it was there that her journey into addiction commenced, and it was a surreal transformation to witness.
At first, it was just a drink after her shift—a means to unwind and temporarily escape the stress of her job. Soon, that solitary drink expanded to become a companion on her breaks, and then it became apparent that she was returning home after her shifts, reeking of alcohol. It was a gradual but
alarming progression. Eventually, she was showing up for work already under the influence, and the consequences were dire. Over several years, my sister spent days on end in the hospital due to her excessive drinking.
| U Turn?
One day, as I visited her in the hospital, an encounter with her doctor changed everything. Dr. Stevens, (not his real name) a short, nearly bald man, entered the room. His appearance bore an eerie resemblance to a statistics professor I once had in college. With a solemn tone, he said, “I need to speak with you,” casting a discreet glance in my direction, implying that I should leave the room. But my sister, determined and resolute as ever, asserted, “That’s my brother; he can stay.”
The conversation that followed was a stark contrast to the turmoil we had grown accustomed to. It was immediate, emotionless, steady, and plain. Dr. Stevens delivered a message that would reverberate through our lives, altering the course of my sister’s battle with addiction: “If you have another drink, you’re going to die.”
| The Immediate Impact
Dr. Stevens’ words hung in the air, a chilling pronouncement of the gravity of my sister’s situation. I was horrified by the stark reality of her condition, but a glimmer of hope also surfaced. It was the hope that her drinking problem was finally over that she wouldn’t have to endure the agony of hospital stays any longer, and most importantly, that she was going to live.
However, if I recall correctly, it wasn’t more than two weeks after that fateful conversation when I discovered her at someone’s house, engaged in the very act that was supposed to be her undoing—drinking.
It was a devastating blow, one that shook me to my core, and it marked the beginning of a rapid descent into the abyss. Less than six months later, my beloved sister was gone, another victim claimed by the merciless grip of addiction.
| Understanding Addiction
Before delving into the harrowing stories of addiction and its various forms, it is crucial to comprehend the medical definition of addiction.
The American Society of Addiction Medicine says, “Addiction is a treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an individual’s life experiences. People with addiction use substances or engage in behaviors that become compulsive and often continue despite harmful consequences. Prevention efforts and treatment approaches for addiction are generally as successful as those for other chronic diseases.”
At its core, addiction involves the following key elements:
1. Compulsion: Individuals with addiction experience an overwhelming urge to engage in addictive behavior or consume the substance, even when they are fully aware of its harmful consequences.
2. Loss of Control: Addiction erodes an individual’s ability to control their impulses, leading to continued engagement in the behavior or substance use, often in escalating amounts.
3. Negative Consequences: Despite the detrimental effects on one’s health, relationships, and overall well-being, addicts persist in their addictive behaviors.
4. Escalation: Over time, addiction often leads to an increased tolerance, requiring greater amounts of the substance or more intense engagement in the behavior to achieve the desired effect.
5. Withdrawal: When the addictive substance or behavior is withheld, individuals with addiction often experience withdrawal symptoms, which can be both physical and psychological, further fueling the cycle of addiction.
| Addiction: A Multifaceted Beast
Addiction is not a one-size-fits-all condition; it manifests in various forms, each with its unique challenges and consequences. Let us explore some of the most prevalent types of addiction, shedding light on the complexities they present.
1. Alcohol (Alcoholism): My sister’s battle with alcoholism serves as a tragic illustration of this pervasive form of addiction. Alcoholism is characterized by the uncontrollable urge to consume alcohol, often leading to physical and psychological dependence. It can result in a range of health issues, including liver damage, heart problems, and cognitive impairments.
2. Drugs: Drug addiction encompasses a wide array of substances, from opioids to stimulants and hallucinogens. The opioid epidemic, in particular, has devastated countless lives, with individuals becoming dependent on prescription painkillers or turning to illicit drugs like heroin. Drug addiction not only threatens physical health but can also lead to social isolation, criminal activity, and a host of mental health issues.
3. Gambling Addiction: Often referred to as a “hidden addiction,” gambling addiction can wreak havoc on a person’s finances and personal life. Compulsive gambling leads individuals to gamble excessively,
often leading to financial ruin, strained relationships, and severe emotional distress.
4. Sex: Sex addiction involves the compulsive pursuit of sexual activities, often leading to risky behaviors and the neglect of personal responsibilities. It can strain relationships, erode self-esteem, and result in legal troubles.
5. Food: Food addiction is marked by the uncontrollable consumption of certain foods, typically those high in sugar, salt, and fat. It shares similarities with other addictions, including cravings, loss of control, and withdrawal symptoms. Obesity and related health problems are common consequences.
6. Smoking: Nicotine addiction remains a significant global health concern, as smoking continues to claim lives through a range of tobacco-related diseases. The addictive nature of nicotine makes it exceedingly challenging for individuals to quit smoking, despite the well-documented health risks.
7. Vaping: Vaping is the inhaling of an aerosol (mist) created by an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) or other vaping device. E-cigarettes (often called vape pens) are battery-operated vaping devices that heat a liquid until it becomes an aerosol mist, which is inhaled. E-cigarettes contain Nicotine, that can make anxiety and depression worse.2
| Revisiting My Sister’s Story
| Conclusion: Breaking the Chains
My sister’s tragic journey through alcoholism takes on new meaning when viewed through the lens of addiction as a complex and multifaceted condition. It underscores the importance of empathy, understanding, and a holistic approach to addressing the underlying factors contributing to addiction.
As a society continues to evolve in its understanding of addiction, there is hope for improved interventions and support systems that can pave the way for recovery and healing.
As we navigate the intricate web of addiction, it is imperative to view it through the lens of compassion and science. Addiction is not a choice but a disease, one that requires medical attention, understanding, and unwavering support.
By shattering the stigma surrounding addiction and embracing evidence-based treatment approaches, we can pave the way for a brighter future—a future where individuals are not defined by their addiction but by their resilience and capacity for recovery. What I now understand is that I didn’t grasp the vicious grip of addiction.
“Addiction is not a character flaw, it’s a brain disorder. We must approach it with the same compassion and urgency as any other medical condition.”
Dr. Nora Volkswagen, Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
As her addiction progressed, the changes in her brain’s reward system would have made it increasingly challenging for her to resist the allure of alcohol. The temporary relief it provided from the stress and pressures of her life would have reinforced its use as a coping mechanism, despite the dire consequences she faced. The cycle of escalation and the grip of withdrawal symptoms would have made it extremely difficult for her to break free from the chains of alcoholism.
Considering these insights into addiction, my sister’s tragic journey takes on a new dimension. It becomes clear that her descent into alcoholism was not a simple choice but rather the result of a complex interplay of factors. The stress of her job in the automobile plant, combined with potential genetic predispositions and psychological vulnerabilities, likely contributed to her initial experimentation with alcohol.
| Understanding Addiction as a Disease
It is essential to recognize addiction as a disease rather than a moral failing. Addiction is not a matter of weak willpower or a lack of self-control. It is a chronic medical condition that alters the brain’s functioning and impairs an individual’s ability to make rational decisions. This shift in perspective is crucial in addressing addiction effectively and providing individuals with the support and treatment they need.

ORAL PHYSICIANS
Your Dentist As Your Doctor
When we think of a “doctor’s visit,” the mind often drifts to familiar scenes involving colds, checkups, or perhaps even chronic conditions managed by a medical doctor (MD). But it’s essential to remember that dentists
are doctors, too, specializing in a field that directly impacts our overall well-being: oral health.
With titles such as Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), dentists undergo rigorous education, akin to medical training, that covers
not only the complexities of the mouth but also the interconnectedness of oral health with the rest of the body.
T he influence of dental health on overall wellness is profound. Studies show that gum disease and plaque buildup can impact cardiovascular health, even linking certain oral infections to risks of heart disease and stroke. This connection between the mouth and the body emphasizes why dentists are crucial healthcare providers, diagnosing and treating issues that extend far beyond just teeth.
One Maryland dentist who exemplifies this role as an “oral physician” is Dr. Edward H. Chappelle, Jr., DDS. Dr. Chappelle has dedicated himself to providing comprehensive dental care, earning a reputation as a trusted healthcare provider throughout Maryland and beyond. His approach to dentistry embodies the philosophy of treating not just isolated symptoms but addressing dental health as a critical component of a patient’s overall well-being.
| Dr. Edward Chappelle, Jr.: Your Trusted Oral Physician
The role of a dentist transcends Dr. Edward H. Chappelle, Jr., DDS, grew up in a family rooted in medicine—both of his parents were doctors. This early exposure to healthcare sparked an interest, but it wasn’t until he was in college that he realized he needed to decide on a career path. «You know when your parents’ friends and grandparents’ friends keep asking, ‘Are you going to be a doctor like your parents?’ That’s when I started thinking seriously about it,» Dr. Chappelle shares.
He admits he was an average student in his early years—not due to lack of ability, but because he didn’t put much effort into his studies. “When
I did apply myself, the results were pretty good,” he says. This realization, combined with his interest in science and working with his hands, led him to pursue a career in dentistry.
Dr. Chappelle is also a proud husband and father of two children, Edward III and April, whose support inspires his dedication to providing compassionate care to his patients. He brings a holistic perspective to his practice, believing in treating the whole person rather than just addressing dental issues as they arise.
| A Comprehensive Approach to Dental Care
At Your Bowie Dentist, the focus is on more than just teeth. Dr. Chappelle and his team adopt a holistic approach, working to uncover the root causes of dental issues. For instance, poor dental health can exacerbate conditions such as diabetes and sleep apnea—both of which can significantly impact overall health if left untreated.
The connection between dental health and sleep apnea is particularly striking. “The number of patients with undiagnosed sleep apnea is astounding,” Dr. Chappelle explains. “There are so many people who have some form of sleep apnea but don’t recognize it. Over time, the body accommodates it, but the underlying issue remains.”
Sleep apnea, a condition caused by diminished airways, can lead to serious health complications if untreated. At Your Bowie Dentist, patients benefit from treatments that not only improve
their dental health but also address conditions like sleep apnea, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, further showcasing the vital role dentists play in overall healthcare.
Routine checkups and cleanings are fundamental in preventing issues with teeth, gums, and jaw bones, or in catching and addressing any problems before they escalate. Dr. Chappelle utilizes state-of-the-art technology to assess each patient’s dental health, developing personalized care plans tailored to their specific needs.
His practice offers a wide range of dental services designed to address various patient needs. These include fillings, dentures, crowns and same-day crowns, root canals, bridges, cleanings and exams, teeth whitening, orthodontics, and periodontics. Each service is delivered with precision and care, utilizing advanced dental technology to ensure patients receive the highest quality treatment.
| Preventive Care: The Hallmark of Modern Dentistry
“Regular dental visits allow us to diagnose and treat problems in their early stages or even prevent them altogether,” says
MORE
THAN JUST TEETH
While many people may associate dentists with cavity detection and wisdom teeth extraction, the field of dentistry encompasses a wide range of oral health services and treatments. Dentists play a crucial role in maintaining and improving oral health, which can have a significant impact on overall well-being. Here are some of the many aspects of dentistry that go beyond cavities and wisdom teeth:
1. Oral Cancer: Dentists are trained to spot early signs of oral cancer, such as unusual growths, sores, or discolorations in the mouth.
2. Diabetes: Gum disease and dental infections can be more severe in individuals with diabetes. Dentists may notice signs of uncontrolled diabetes, such as gum inflammation and poor wound healing.
3. Cardiovascular Issues: There is a link between gum disease and heart problems. Dentists can identify signs of gum disease that may be related to cardiovascular issues.
4. Nutritional Deficiencies: Oral health issues like bleeding gums and mouth sores can sometimes be indicative of nutritional deficiencies.
5. GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease): Dentists can observe erosion on tooth enamel caused by acid reflux, which may signal the presence of GERD.
6. Eating Disorders: Dentists may notice signs of eating disorders, such as tooth erosion and damage due to excessive vomiting.
7. Sleep Apnea: Dentists can recognize the signs of sleep apnea, such as worn teeth or an oversized uvula, and refer patients for further evaluation.
8. Respiratory Conditions: Chronic bad breath may be a sign of respiratory issues, and dentists can recommend a patient see a physician for a diagnosis.
9. Osteoporosis: Dentists may detect changes in the jawbone density that could be associated with osteoporosis.
Dr. Chappelle. Preventive measures include routine teeth cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, and education on proper oral hygiene practices.
At Your Bowie Dentist, the philosophy is simple: preventive care is the best care. Dr. Chappelle embodies the role of an oral physician by emphasizing the importance of routine checkups and cleanings. His practice is dedicated to ensuring that dental issues are caught early—before they escalate into more serious health concerns. Dr. Chappelle’s approach goes beyond just addressing immediate dental needs. He believes in educating his patients, ensuring they understand the connection between their oral health and overall well-being. During each visit, Dr. Chappelle takes the time to assess the current state of a patient’s dental health, identifying any potential issues with teeth, gums, or jaw bones. By using state-of-the-art technology, he can develop personalized care plans that not only address current concerns but also prevent future problems.
| The Broader Role of Oral Physicians
As an oral physician, Dr. Chappelle offers a comprehensive range of services designed to meet all aspects of dental care. His dedication to embracing the latest dental innovations ensures that his patients benefit from the most advanced care available.
It is high time that we broaden our view of what it means to visit a doctor. Dentists, like their counterparts in other medical fields, are vital members of the healthcare community, focusing on preventing, diagnosing, and treating conditions that affect an integral part of our body: our oral cavity. With their extensive training and specialized knowledge, dentists ensure our smiles are not only aesthetically pleasing but are also indicators of our overall well-being.
As we continue to appreciate the deep connections between oral health and overall health, we recognize the dentist’s office as a critical battlefield in the fight against diseases that affect the whole body.
So, the next time someone says they are going to the doctor, remember that if they’re seeing their dentist, they are indeed visiting a doctor—one who is just as essential to maintaining their overall health.

Rise to Chief of Radiology & Co-Founder of Ascension Medical Educators
Dr. Asante Dickson stands as a pioneering figure in the world of healthcare, having risen to the prestigious position of Chief of Radiology through a combination of talent, determination, and an unyielding commitment to excellence.
More than just a skilled physician, Dr. Dickson is also a motivational speaker and a passionate advocate for empowering underserved communities, particularly youth and people of color.
| Formative Years on Long Island
His childhood in Freeport, Long Island, played a pivotal role in shaping his identity and career aspirations. Growing up in a unique area that blended the tranquility of suburbia with the vibrant, diverse culture of nearby New York City, he was exposed to both worlds, giving him a distinctive perspective. “Long Island was a great place to grow up, especially Freeport. It had that mix of suburban life but also an urban cultural vibe. That mix is definitely a part of why I am who I am today.”
Dr. Dickson’s parents were educators who instilled in him values of hard work, intellectual curiosity, and confidence.
His mother earned her Ph.D. in urban education from the City University of New York and served as an English teacher and later as an assistant superintendent. His father was a media specialist with a variety of talents—librarian, videographer, mechanic, handyman— and also coached his soccer team. Their remarkable work ethic and unwavering belief in his abilities helped him grow into a self-assured young man. “I was taught by my parents that if you’re waiting for somebody else to tell you how smart and good you are, you will be waiting forever. That’s why there’s no bigger fan of Asante Dickson than Asante Dickson.”
| Rising Through the Ranks
Dr. Dickson dreamed of attending an Ivy League school, which led him to Cornell University for his undergraduate studies in biology. He then pursued a medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine, completing his M.D. after an internship in internal medicine at Georgetown. He further honed his skills during his first year of radiology residency at Howard University Hospital, followed by completing his training at Stony Brook University.
“We’re all looking for somebody we can see ourselves in.”
Driven by a passion for mastering challenging medical fields, he chose a fellowship in neuroradiology at Stanford University, recognized as one of the top programs in the country. “Neuro is the hardest fellowship to get, so I’m going to do whatever they say is the hardest.”
After his fellowship, he returned to Stony Brook University-Winthrop as an attending physician before relocating to the Washington, D.C. area. There, he joined Adventist HealthCare as Chair of Radiology, where he successfully transformed the radiology department into a high-performing unit, significantly improving both inpatient and outpatient services.
In 2023, Dr. Dickson achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Black Chief of Radiology for Holy Cross Health in Southern Maryland.
| Mentorship & Community Impact
Dr. Dickson explained that representation in healthcare is essential, and having more diversity in rooms where important decisions are made can make all the difference in the world. “There’s no system in the United States that isn’t run by people who can be influenced by biases, and healthcare is no exception.”
In 2019, he co-founded Ascension Medical Educators, LLC (Ascenmed), a professional services firm comprising medical educators and physicians dedicated to providing expert academic advising and mentorship for those seeking careers in medicine.
He explained that entering the medical field, especially for those who aim to rise in the organizational hierarchy, requires extreme personal sacrifice, time commitment, stress, exhaustion, and more.
“I was always vowing that when I get out, I would not leave people to sustain and deal with this trauma by themselves.”
Particularly for people of color, this stress can be heightened because few in their families or communities can relate to those experiences and offer guidance on how to navigate that world.
“We’re all looking for somebody we can see ourselves in.” Ultimately, he decided to be that person for young professionals entering the medical field.
“There’s no system in the United States that isn’t run by people who can be influenced by biases, and healthcare is no exception.”
He emphasized that representation in healthcare can often mean the difference between life and death, and having more diversity in decision-making rooms can significantly impact outcomes.
Dr. Asante Dickson’s journey
exemplifies that true success is not solely defined by personal milestones but by the lasting influence one has on the lives of others and the broader community. He will continue to inspire and empower the next generation of healthcare professionals.

BY DAINE TAYLOR
SUICIDE BY FOOD CONVENIENCE
United States have surged, affecting both adults and children. According to the CDC, nearly 42 percent of U.S. adults are classified as obese, with nearly 20 percent of children and adolescents impacted as well.
OAs the condition becomes more prevalent, the health consequences grow, affecting not only physical well-being but also increasing the risk for long-term conditions. Addressing this epidemic requires a multifaceted approach, including greater awareness about healthy eating, particularly as fast food has become an increasingly central part of the American diet.
INSIDE THE RISING OBESITY EPIDEMIC
The CDC’s 2021 study highlights the adverse dietary factors linking to fast food consumption, including beverages.
State-level data tell an even clearer story. A 2020 study in The Journal of Nutrition found that people who frequently indulge in fast food have significantly higher body mass index (BMI) levels. In states where fast food is more accessible, obesity rates tend to rise, revealing just how crucial our eating habits are to our health.
But it gets worse. A 2022 analysis in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine showed that adults eating fast food more than twice a week face a 56 percent higher risk of obesity compared to those who eat it less often.
Recent data from America’s Health Rankings reveals that over 33 percent of Maryland adults are classified as obese. These trends cut across various racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic lines, underscoring the urgent need for inclusive health resources and the
Kills
to fast food consumption.
THE WEIGHTY TOLL OF OUR ‘NO WAIT’ CULTURE
For many of us, fast food has become a go-to choice, thanks to its convenience, affordability, and cultural impact. Convenience is a huge reason why fast food is so popular. It’s designed for speed and efficiency, giving you a quick meal solution when life gets hectic. You can grab ready-to-eat meals in minutes, making it an appealing option for busy families and individuals alike.
Let’s talk about cost. Fast food is often cheaper than preparing meals at home, which makes it a tempting choice for those
on tight budgets. Value meals and combo deals create the illusion of getting “more for less,” making fast food even more attractive.
And we can’t ignore taste. Fast food is engineered to be delicious, often loaded with high levels of salt, fat, and sugar. These ingredients make the food satisfying — and sometimes addictive —encouraging you to come back for more. Plus, the larger portion sizes and variety of options maximize your enjoyment.
The fast-food business model thrives on profit, focusing on keeping production costs low and driving high-volume sales. This usually means using cheap, caloriedense ingredients that lack nutritional value. And with heavy marketing aimed at younger crowds, fast food has woven itself into the fabric of daily life.
THE HIDDEN COST OF CONVENIENCE
The obesity epidemic has a hefty price tag. In fact, obesity-related healthcare costs in the U.S. reach about $190.2 billion each year, impacting not just individual health but also the broader economy.
These healthcare expenses cover a range of conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension, all of which require ongoing medical care. This places a significant strain on healthcare systems, insurance companies, and government programs. As obesity rates climb, so do the costs associated with medical care, leading to higher premiums and taxes for everyone.
So, what can we do about it?
Addressing the dietary habits tied to fast food is critical to easing these economic burdens. Proactive public health measures, like educational campaigns promoting healthier eating habits and initiatives aimed at reducing fast food consumption, can significantly help curb obesity rates. By encouraging better food choices and providing resources for meal prep and nutrition education, we can shift dietary patterns away from highcalorie, low-nutrient foods.
THE IMPORTANCE OF TRANSITIONING TOWARD HEALTHIER FOOD CHOICES
While the fast-food industry may not change anytime soon, making smarter
food choices on your own can have a huge impact on your health and longevity. It all starts with understanding what’s really in your fast food and how it affects your long-term health.
Staying active is a great way to balance out eating habits, helping manage weight, boost heart health, and relieve stress— making it easier to counter the effects of high-calorie, low-nutrient foods.
Findings from the 2019 Maryland Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System indicate that only 52 percent of adults in Maryland meet the recommended 150 minutes of weekly physical activity. By 2020, 66.5 percent of Maryland residents over the age of 18 were classified as either overweight or obese, underscoring a growing public health concern in the state.
To empower better choices, we need to make nutrition education widely available. Schools, community centers, and healthcare providers can offer workshops and resources that promote
balanced diets, helping you make informed decisions about your food.
Let’s not forget about portion control. Recognizing appropriate serving sizes is vital for managing caloric intake and preventing overeating. Simple tricks, like using smaller plates and measuring out servings, can make a big difference in your eating habits.
Consider incorporating more plantbased foods — like fruits, veggies, whole grains, and legumes — into your meals. Cooking at home lets you control the ingredients and portion sizes, helping you foster healthier eating patterns. By focusing on your well-being, you can navigate the fast-food culture and make choices that truly benefit your long-term health.
A Calling, Not a Job
BY CAROLYN TOLBERT
DR. EUGENIA CATERNOR’S JOURNEY TO BECOMING A LEADING WEIGHT LOSS SPECIALIST.
Dr. Eugenia Caternor’s journey from Ghana to becoming one of the country’s leading weight loss specialists is nothing short of inspiring.
From her early days in high school, she was the go-to person when classmates felt sick, always armed with Tylenol or Ibuprofen. This innate desire to help others guided her career choices and ultimately led her to a calling she sees as more of a ministry than a job.
Dr. Caternor had long dreamed of attending medical school, a goal she brought with her from Ghana. However, her father advised her to pursue nursing first. “If you finish nursing school and still want to continue, then you can go to medical school,” he told her. “But if you choose to settle down and have a family, at least now you have a career.” Reflecting on this advice, she says, “It was the best thing I could have done.”
| Expanding Her Expertise
Heeding her father’s advice, Dr. Caternor relocated to the United States in 1996. Without delay, she began her pursuit of a nursing
degree from George Mason University, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in 2002.
Driven by a passion for learning and a desire to make a difference, she expanded her educational credentials by obtaining a Master’s Degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Doctorate in Nursing from Indiana State University. In addition, she obtained a Psychiatric Mental Health Certificate from LaSalle University. Dr. Caternor is also a Certified Advanced Grief Counseling Specialist and Weight Management Specialist.
| A Shift to Weight Management
Dr. Caternor’s professional journey began in primary care, where she quickly noticed a troubling trend. “I was working in a primary care office and saw that many patients had chronic illnesses like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.
“Instead of addressing the root cause, we simply increased their medication,” she recalls. This realization prompted a significant career shift. “I felt like I wasn’t
truly helping my patients. By not educating them on a healthy lifestyle, I was contributing to the problem.”
As a nurse, she gained extensive experience in hospitals and home care settings and also served as an adjunct faculty member in the nursing program at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland. Determined to make a real difference, Dr. Caternor left her primary care position in 2014 to focus on weight management. She believes in treating obesity as a chronic disease, a stance supported by the World Health Organization, which has recognized obesity as a chronic condition requiring
long-term treatment and management. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity affects over 40% of adults in the United States, highlighting the urgent need for effective weight management solutions.
| Addressing Mental and Physical Health
A significant part of her practice involves addressing the psychological aspects of weight management. “Many patients feel discouraged because they’ve tried everything and nothing seems to work. I tell them that with God, all things are possible. Mental health and obesity go hand in hand.”
| Sustainable Weight Loss Solutions
Her practice offers a comprehensive approach, including FDA-approved appetite suppressants, which are most effective when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity.
In a society that often stigmatizes obesity, Dr. Caternor offers hope and tangible solutions. She treats her patients with empathy and understanding, helping them navigate their weight loss journey with the support they need to succeed.
Her holistic approach not only addresses the physical aspects of obesity but also the emotional and psychological factors, ensuring her patients achieve lasting health and wellness.
Balancing ACT
The Power of Self-Care for Health and Happiness
by Reha Shackelford
In the hustle and bustle of being a wife, mom of two, entrepreneur, and attorney where the responsibilities and commitments seem to multiply by the day, the concept of selfcare is something I recognize as a necessity for my life’s demands. Defined as the deliberate and mindful practice of tending to one’s physical, emotional, and mental needs, self-care has evolved from being dismissed as a luxury to being recognized as an essential component of promoting overall health and wellness. This article delves into the myriad of reasons why prioritizing self-care is paramount for our health and how it can empower us to lead more fulfilling lives.
| Physical Health and Vitality
A fundamental pillar of self-care is maintaining physical well-being. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep are cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle. Engaging in regular physical activity releases endorphins, the «feel-good» hormones that contribute to a positive mood and reduced stress. My favorite hot yoga studio in Northwest, D.C. offers classes for children to ensure scheduling time for my own class doesn’t take a back seat to childcare. Similar to yoga, self-care encourages us to listen to our bodies, recognizing when rest is necessary and when we need to move and invigorate ourselves. By adopting self-care practices that prioritize physical health, we enhance our immune systems, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and cultivate an enduring sense of vitality.
| Mental and Emotional Resilience
In a world inundated with stimuli, our mental and emotional health can easily become compromised. Practicing self-care offers us a toolkit to navigate the challenges and pressures that life presents. Meditation, mindfulness, and journaling are practices that can help us center ourselves and manage stress. Engaging in hobbies we enjoy, spending quality time with loved ones, or simply taking a leisurely walk can restore our sense of balance. I enjoy a renewed sense of mental clarity by spending just an hour at Great Falls- a National Park nestled along the Potomac River in northern Virginia. Self-care nurtures our emotional resilience, fostering an environment where we can process emotions healthily and maintain a positive outlook.
| Reducing Stress and Preventing Burnout
The demands of daily life can often lead to stress, and prolonged stress can give way to burnout – a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion. As a mom of two, a wife, an entrepreneur, and an attorney mental exhaustion is almost inevitable that’s why on any given day I prioritize self-care and build it into my routine as it acts as a buffer against life’s challenges. Practicing self-care provides me with a designated space to unwind, recharge, and detach from stressors. Whether it’s a quiet moment with a book, a long soothing bath (or a simple eucalyptus shower in a time crunch), or engaging in creative pursuits, self-care rituals
counteract the effects of chronic stress and mitigate the risk of burnout. A quick and easy self-care tool I utilize is buying myself flowers from my favorite florist in Ann Arundel County, Maryland. Taking a moment to stop and smell the flowers (pun intended) on busy or stressful days provides a much-needed reprieve from the chaos.
| Enhancing Productivity and Creativity
Contrary to the belief that self-care is solely about relaxation, it has been shown to significantly enhance productivity and stimulate creativity. When we prioritize our well-being, we optimize our cognitive functioning. This translates into improved focus, problem-solving abilities, and innovation. Regular breaks, healthy eating habits, and quality sleep not only sustain our physical health but also empower us to perform at our best in all areas of life.
| Nurturing Relationships
Self-care extends beyond individual well-being; it also positively impacts our relationships. Yes, all of them! When we take care of ourselves, we are better equipped to engage with others empathetically and authentically. We are more attuned to the needs of our loved ones, fostering deeper connections. Additionally, setting boundaries and saying no (even to our children) when necessary are crucial aspects of self-care that enable us to maintain healthy relationships without overextending ourselves
| Cultivating Self-Compassion
An essential aspect of self-care is self-compassion,
which involves treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding that we offer to others. Often, we hold ourselves to unrealistic standards and berate ourselves for perceived shortcomings. Self-care teaches us to treat ourselves as we would a dear friend – with empathy and acceptance. This self-compassion extends beyond physical appearance to encompass all aspects of our being, nurturing a positive self-image and bolstering self-esteem.
| The Holistic Approach
It’s important to recognize that self-care is not a one-size-fits-all concept. It encompasses a holistic approach that considers the unique needs and preferences of each individual. What constitutes self-care for one person might differ for another, and that’s perfectly acceptable. The key is to cultivate a routine that aligns with your personal values and contributes to overall well-being.
| In Conclusion
In a world that often glorifies busyness and achievement, the practice of self-care serves as a reminder of our intrinsic worth and the necessity of nurturing ourselves. By dedicating time to our physical, emotional, and mental needs, we foster resilience, balance, and a deeper connection with ourselves and others. Self-care isn’t an indulgence; it’s a commitment to leading a life that’s characterized by optimal health, well-being, and a profound sense of fulfillment. As we navigate the complexities of life, let’s remember that caring for ourselves is not selfish but rather an act of profound self-respect and self-love.
AT HOME CARE:
BY WENDY BEGAY
The story of At Home Care begins with its founding in 1977, rooted in the humble and heartfelt beginnings of its founder, Irene Cady-Harrington. Growing up, Irene spent countless hours in her grandmother’s 14-bed rest home. Her grandmother, a dedicated nurse, ran the home with a blend of professionalism and warmth that left a lasting impression on young Irene.
As a child, she would visit the patients, listen to their stories, and share in their joy as they showered her with candy and affection. These early experiences, though seemingly ordinary at the time, planted the seeds of compassion and care that would later flourish into a full-blown career.
| I’m Going For It!
Initially, Irene envisioned a future in social work or journalism. However, her professional journey led her to a 14-year career in personnel management, where she developed skills in interviewing and placement. It was during this period that Irene observed the nascent home care industry and recognized a gap in the market.
Driven by a belief that she could offer better, more personalized care, Irene made a courageous decision. With only three months of rent and car payments in the bank, she left her stable job and said, “I’m going for it.”
With determination and a clear vision, Irene began reaching out to social workers, doctors’ offices, and others who served the senior population. She chose Silver Spring, Maryland, an area with a mix of affluence and a significant aging population. At that time, nursing

homes were not as prevalent, and assisted living facilities were yet to become mainstream. Despite the presence of a few big franchises, many did not endure. At Home Care, however, did more than just survive— it thrived.
| Building a Legacy of Trust and Excellence
At Home Care has grown to become one of the five oldest agencies in the Maryland area, a testament to its reliability, professionalism, and dedication to quality care. The agency is regulated by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Its mission is to provide excellent care at affordable rates, ensuring that individuals requiring full or part-time assistance can maintain their independence and dignity within the comfort of their own homes.
The aging population in Maryland mirrors a national trend, with an increasing number of seniors opting to age in place rather than move to institutional settings like nursing homes or assisted living facilities. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that over 15% of Maryland’s population is aged 65 or older, a figure that continues to grow. The demand for home care services has surged accordingly, making agencies like At Home Care indispensable.
| The At Home Care Difference
One of the key distinctions of At Home Care is its commitment to personalized care. Unlike nursing
homes or assisted living facilities, which often provide generalized care to large groups, home care allows for one-on-one attention. This approach fosters a sense of familiarity and security, enabling clients to maintain their routines and preferences. Personalized care not only enhances physical well-being but also significantly contributes to emotional and social health.
| Resilience During the COVID-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges to the home care industry. Irene recalls, “COVID crippled the industry for a while, but no one in our office stayed home. Those who were already on cases continued to care for their patients.” At Home Care’s dedication to its clients was unwavering.
Despite the risks, the staff remained committed, ensuring that clients received uninterrupted care. The pandemic also brought about a shift in dynamics, as many individuals who began working from home chose to stay with their aging parents, temporarily reducing the need for external care services. Nonetheless, the need for professional home care, especially for complex medical needs, remained critical.
| A Leader in Home Care
At Home Care’s enduring success and reputation are a direct result of its commitment to excellence. With over four decades of experience, the agency has set the standard for quality home care in Maryland.
Its longevity is a testament to its ability to adapt to changing times while maintaining the core values of compassion, integrity, and professionalism.
| Looking Ahead
As the demand for home care services continues to rise, At Home Care is well-positioned to lead the industry. Irene’s vision of providing exceptional, affordable care remains the cornerstone of the agency’s operations. The future looks promising, with At Home Care dedicated to empowering individuals to live fulfilling and independent lives in the comfort of their own homes.
In conclusion, At Home Care’s story is one of genuine beginnings, courageous decisions, and unwavering dedication to making a difference. It stands as a model of excellence in home care, a legacy built on the simple yet profound principle of treating each client with the utmost care and respect. As Maryland’s home care industry evolves, At Home Care will continue to be a trusted leader, setting the benchmark for quality and compassion.
I Love You Get Screened
A
Message from the American Cancer Society
to Help
Detect Cancers at their Most Treatable Stages
“NEARLY HALF OF ALL DIAGNOSED CANCERS IN THE U.S. HAVE A RECOMMENDED SCREENING TEST TO CATCH THEM EARLY. AND WHEN CAUGHT EARLY, CURE RATES CAN SURPASS 90%,” SAYS AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY CHIEF PATIENT OFFICER ARIF KAMAL, M.D.
Screening tests are used before a person has any symptoms to help find cancer early, when it may be easier to treat.
The American Cancer Society is making a big push to reduce the screening gaps in the U.S., which became greater than ever during the pandemic. Millions of Americans miss their cancer screenings due to the COVID-19 outbreak, according to a study led by the American Cancer Society and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in February 2023.
«The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a detrimental effect on important cancer screenings in this country,» says Jessica Starr, associate scientist, cancer risk factors and screening surveillance research at the American Cancer Society and lead author of the study. “It’s critical to get people back into their doctor’s offices to help prevent and catch cancer at its earliest stages when it might be easiest to treat.”
To address this, the American Cancer Society launched a national campaign called, «I Love You - Get Screened.» It includes some specific calls to action, such as the “Grab Your Girls” breast cancer screening message, which is emphasized during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October. Grab Your Girls encourages women to hold each other accountable to get their mammograms by grabbing their female family and friends and urging them to get screened.
An example is Washington, D.C., area resident Madeline Long, a breast cancer survivor who volunteered to be a Faces of Hope ambassador representing the American Cancer Society Grab Your Girls campaign. In 2011, screening saved a trio of women in her family – including herself. Long had a lifesaving mammogram thanks to the urging of her mother who had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. Madeline’s mother got her mammogram because her sister was diagnosed during her regular annual mammogram. All three women were diagnosed within weeks of each other. This is the kind of screening encouragement that Grab Your Girls wants to inspire.
Breast cancer death rates have dropped by 43% since the early 1990s because of “better drugs, more research, and more women getting screened. Screenings actually work,” says American Cancer Society Chief Medical Officer William Dahut, M.D. “We encourage every woman to begin talking to their physicians at age 40 about screenings and by age 45 have a screening annually.”
Colorectal cancer is another cancer for which screening is particularly effective in saving lives. According to cancer.org: “Colorectal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer and is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. If all adults 45 and older were screened for colorectal cancer, we could avoid thousands of deaths each year and prevent many people from ever getting the disease.”
Screening can often find colorectal cancer early, when it’s small, hasn’t spread, and might be easier to treat. A polyp can take as many as 10 to 15 years to develop into cancer. With screening, doctors can find and remove polyps before they have the chance to turn into cancer.
“Further, the American Cancer Society created the first cancer screening information and location tool at www.cancer.org/get-screened, where users can put in their zip code and find local resources,” says Dr. Kamal. “Coupled with our health insurance specialists at our free 1-800-227-2345 line, we hope that questions of «how will it be paid for?» and «where do I get screening?» are answered quickly.”
In addition, The American Cancer Society, NFL and Sleep Number have come together to create The Defender Tool which puts into one place a cancer screening quiz and location database. By going to crucialcatch.cancer.org, individuals can take a short quiz to find out what screening tests are right for them, then answer a quick lifestyle assessment to see how their life choices can affect their cancer risk.
| Cancer Screening Recommendations
Here are the American Cancer Society’s screening recommendations for people of average risk for certain cancers. Talk to a doctor about which tests you might need and the screening schedule that’s right for you. It’s also a good idea to talk about risk factors, such as lifestyle behaviors and family history that may put you or your loved one at higher risk.
Age 25–39 Screening recommendations
• Cervical cancer screening recommended for people with a cervix beginning at age 25.
Age 40–49 Screening recommendations
• Breast cancer screening recommended beginning at age 45, with the option to begin at age 40.

Desmond King II’s Biggest Win: How
Youth Sports Day is Redefining Inclusion
Nottoway Park’s football field buzzed with an energy usually reserved for NFL stadiums. But today’s stars weren’t seasoned professionals— they were children with special needs, each ready to experience the thrill of football in a new way.
The inaugural Youth Sports Day, was a groundbreaking event co-sponsored by the King Kares Foundation, Capstone Sports Network, and KippsDeSanto & Co. This collaborative effort wasn’t just another corporate social responsibility tick-box; it was a vibrant celebration of inclusion, ability, and the unifying power of football.
At the heart of the event stood Desmond King II, the Houston Texans’ star cornerback whose prowess on the gridiron is matched only by his passion for giving back. King, whose brother has autism, brought an authenticity to the day that transcended his NFL stardom. King Kares’s foundation played a pivotal role in bringing the event to life. “For me, this isn’t about being a football player,” King shared. “It’s about being a brother, a friend, and hopefully, an inspiration.”
The day unfolded like a well-executed game plan. Skills clinics led by patient volunteers saw children mastering the basics of football. Minigames erupted with laughter and cheers, while adaptive football demonstrations opened eyes and minds to the possibilities of inclusive athletics.
Perhaps the most touching moments came during the one-on-one interactions between King and the young participants. The All-Pro defensive back, known for his lightning-fast reflexes on the field, showed a gentler side as he guided small hands through the perfect spiral or celebrated a wobbly but enthusiastic attempt at a field goal.
Behind the scenes, the triumvirate of KippsDeSanto & Co., Capstone Sports Network, and King Kares Foundation ensured the day ran as smoothly as a well-oiled offensive line. Their combined expertise in finance, sports management, and community outreach created a solid foundation for the event. Additional corporate sponsors like Tesla brought their innovative spirit, while other supporters, including CSN, The Blank Canvus, and Adaptivities, each played crucial roles in

creating an event that was as seamless as it was meaningful.
For KippsDeSanto & Co., a leader in the financial sector, Youth Sports Day represents a new playbook in corporate philanthropy. “We’ve always believed in giving back,” said a company spokesperson. “But partnering with Capstone Sports Network and King Kares allowed us to create something truly special. We’re not just writing checks; we’re creating experiences, changing perspectives, and hopefully, improving lives.”
The impact of such events extends far beyond a single day on the field. Dr. Elena Rodriguez, a child psychologist specializing in special needs, explains: “Inclusive sports events like this are crucial for physical health, social development, and self-esteem. They show these children—and the world—that disability doesn’t mean inability.”
As the sun began to set on Nottoway Park, tired but happy children clutched autographs and newly learned football skills close to their hearts. Parents exchanged contact information, forming impromptu support networks. Volunteers and corporate sponsors mingled, already discussing plans for next year.
In a world often divided, Youth Sports Day stood as a testament to what can be achieved when community, corporate responsibility, and compassion align. It’s more than a football clinic—it’s a glimpse into a more inclusive future, where everyone gets a chance to play.
As Desmond King II put it, summing up the day: “On the field, we measure success in yards gained and points scored. Today, we measured it in smiles, in moments of connection, in barriers broken down. By that measure, this was the biggest win of my career.”
With the resounding success of this inaugural event, KippsDeSanto & Co., Capstone Sports Network, and King Kares Foundation are already hinting at plans to expand the concept. The field of dreams they’ve created may soon grow into a league of opportunities for special needs children across the nation.
