he first definition for love in the dictionary describes it as “a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person.” By the time you reach the last entry, it is apparent that the actual word is used in many, many ways. You can give love, take love, make love, feel love, taste love and even be “in love.” The kind of love that our cover displays is that between two lovers. Two human beings who share a romantic bond, like no other. They create a tie that is emotive and strong; it is complex and primal by nature. When we connect on that level, it seems that each cell in our body responds to this intense, beautiful feeling. Love should rise above “like” or “lust,” as illustrated in one of our reader’s comments. “I remember seeing him and thinking: friend. He was cute, but not normally my type. As I got to know him better, through working with him, we became good friends. As time went on, I realized that I looked at him differently. He seemed more attractive to me, more handsome. Without notice, my body started responding differently around him. I started to crave him on a completely different level.” HB

Feng Shui for Romance Written By Rebecca Moore

There are also flower placements and bed placements that are excellent for relationships which are specific to each person and their home. A consultant can also help you take advantage of energies that are specific to attracting a relationship.

Do you dream of having the ideal relationship? With the right tools you can!

Getting Started

Another Consideration

The key to attracting the ideal partner is to know what you want. Make a list of all the qualities and physical features you desire in that person. Be as specific as possible, including that they are single and available. Go through magazines and find a picture of your dream person and place it with your list. Now, with the right mind-set, your daily exercise is to read your list, visualize yourself in the idea relationship and feel the emotion you would feel having your perfect partner.

You need to consider what that person eats. Why is it important to have similar eating habits? Because what you eat influences your body energy vibration. To have a great relationship, it is best that you match body energy vibrations. For example, a carnivore vibrates differently than a vegetarian. Someone who loves junk food will vibrate differently than someone with a healthy diet. More than anything, you have to have the desire to be in a relationship. With the right mind-set and knowing what you want, you can attract the perfect partner. Do your daily exercise, set up your bedroom and get ready for that special someone. HB

Next Make room for that person. It is essential to get rid of any clutter in the bedroom. If there isn’t enough walking space, you may need to move some furniture out. Now this is the hard one, but important, make room in your closet.

When it comes to the bedroom, it is important energywise to avoid dark colors and cold colors such as black, white or metallic. It is also best to avoid metal furniture and mirrors. The bed should be free of clutter, including the underneath, with plenty of room to walk around all three sides. If you use nightstands, be sure to have one on each side of the bed. Bedrooms should not be too bright or have too many windows. Always keep the windows covered at night.

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. HB

Mother Nature’s Love Potions

The brain simply cannot keep up with the demand to produce these feel good chemicals forever. The good news is that another chemical system will take over after these chemicals fade. If you and your partner make it through the infatuation stage to the deep attachment stage (characteristic of long-term relationships), the brain produces endorphins. These chemicals are very soothing in that they calm the mind, kill pain and reduce anxiety. Lovers feel secure with one another and the deep attachment continues to grow. With all of this information, it is now easier to understand why a break-up can be devastating for those involved, as they have been cut off from their daily dose of love chemicals. The anxiety, despair and pain felt after a romantic loss are similar to what a person addicted to amphetamines experiences during drug withdrawal. Romantic love has the ability to make one feel obsessed--to the point of losing their sense of self, especially if they have been rejected. In some cases, this feeling can become so overwhelming for an individual, that they may have problems navigating through it. This is where therapeutic approaches such as counseling would be appropriate to help facilitate a healthy emotional state of mind. HB References: 1. Baur, K., & Crooks, R. Our Sexuality. “Human skin is like a field of grass, each blade a nerve ending so sensitive that the slightest graze can etch into the human brain a memory of the moment,” Dr. Helen Fisher. Of the five major senses, touch is responsible for facilitating our bonds to one another through our skin; the largest organ of the body. The brain releases chemicals that serve as a kind of “love potion.” During physical intimacy or cuddling with a partner, the hypothalamus releases oxytocin, which in turn creates feelings of pleasure, sexual fulfillment, and fosters the feelings of being in love. When we first enter into a new relationship, it is as if we are in a euphoric state of romantic bliss, commonly referred to as the infatuation stage. This stage results not only from the release of oxytocin, but also from the brain chemicals norepinephrine, dopamine and phenylethylamine (PEA). These chemicals are opiates of the mind, being that they produce amphetamine-like effects, such as giddiness, elation, and a sense of ease. However, the body will eventually develop a tolerance to these chemicals just as it does to amphetamines. Once we begin to see our new found love interest on a daily basis, the high diminishes (studies have shown that it typically lasts two to three years). February 2010

February is American Heart Month.

Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are our nation’s No. 1 killer. Heart Attach Warning Signs -Chest Discomfort Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. -Discomfort in Other Areas of the Upper Body Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. -Shortness of Breath with or without chest discomfort -Other Signs May include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. More about heart attack Some heart attacks are sudden and intense — the “movie heart attack,” where no one doubts what’s happening. But most heart attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often people affected aren’t sure what’s wrong and wait too long before getting help. Immediately call 9-1-1 or your emergency response number so an ambulance (ideally with advanced life support) can be sent for you. As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/ vomiting, and back or jaw pain. Learn the signs, but remember this: Even if you’re not sure it’s a heart attack, have it checked out (tell a doctor about your symptoms). Minutes matter! Fast action can save lives — maybe your own. Don’t wait more than five minutes to call 9-1-1 or your emergency response number. Calling 9-1-1 is almost always the fastest way to get lifesaving treatment.

R U Healthy? A question you need to ask yourself is do you want to be healthy or just not sick? When you ask most people what makes you healthy, they’ll tell you “nutrition and exercise.” These are two big components to better health; but most people overlook the two key components: which are Emotional Health and the Brain and Nervous System. All of these play a major role in your overall function of good health. Nutrition is very important and is overlooked more than we think. Most people eat a lot of processed foods that taste great, but this is not very nutritious. A healthy diet is not as confusing or restrictive as you might think. It’s about choosing foods that provide your body with the calories and nutrients it needs to perform--not more or less. The best way to start is to learn the recommended daily calorie intake for your age, weight, height, activity level and gender. In other words, skip the fads and focus on proper nutrition. After figuring out your nutrition needs, you’ll need to decide what type of exercising will be best for you. Your exercise program should include something from each of the four basic fitness components: 1) Cardio respiratory endurance, 2) Muscular strength, 3) Muscular endurance and 4) flexibility. Each workout should begin with a warm up and end with a cool down. As a general rule, space your workouts throughout the week and avoid consecutive days of hard exercise. How often, how long and how hard you exercise, and what kinds of exercises you do, should be determined by what you are trying to accomplish. Your goals, your present fitness level, age, health, skills, interest and convenience are among the factors you should consider. Remember to maintain good thoughts because they affect your health. Neuroscientists are now finding the influence our emotions have on our health and well-being, and mounting February 2010

evidence that we do in fact control our health. Good emotional health is feeling good about yourself and those around you. It is having the ability to handle emotions, anger, stress, depression, etc. in healthy ways. Not having good emotional health is just the opposite and can include mental diseases and disorders. The most overlooked aspect of health is the nervous system. Research proves that the slightest pressure on a spinal nerve root as it emerges from the spine can reduce the function of that nerve by 60 percent, in a matter of minutes. Everyone knows that a broken neck, or similar spinal injury, can produce pressure on the nerves causing partial or even complete paralysis may result. However, one tends to shrug off the possibility that a subluxation (pinched nerve) resulting in pressure on these same nerves can be extremely destructive, causing a condition of decreased activity amounting to a slight paralysis--or the reverse, a dangerous increase in activity. For instance, a sluggish liver or gall bladder indicates decreased activity, and an over-active stomach or rapid heartbeat signifies increased activity. The normal nerve control that has been denied must be restored. By eliminating nerve interference, chiropractic care can not only correct numerous health problems, but also may prevent many conditions from developing. Incorporate these components of health into this New Year and experience a Happier and Healthier new you. HB References: 1. Nutritional needs: www.everydayhealth.com 2. contribute to depression as well. Maca is high in protein, abundant in amino acids, sterols, flavanols, alkamides, vitamins and minerals (especially calcium). The effects of maca are most noticed when taken consistently, about one to four tablespoons a day. Maca may be added to soups, stews, baked goods, salad dressings, smoothies, and pretty much anything else you can think of. The pleasant, malt-like flavor blends beautifully with chocolate. ometimes referred to as the “Peruvian Ginseng,” Lepidium Meyenii is an herbaceous biennial plant native to the Andes of Peru and is most commonly known as Maca. Traditionally grown at altitudes as high as 14,800 ft elevation, it favors the cold climate and soil conditions that other crops cannot tolerate. Nearly all maca cultivation is carried out organically, partly because there are so few pests at high altitudes, although maca is often planted in with potatoes because it repels other root crop pests. For at least 2,000 years, maca has been an important traditional food and medicinal plant among the Andean people. It is regarded as a nutrient-dense, energy-imbuing super food; enhancing strength, endurance and libido. It is a revered aphrodisiac and longevity herb. The powdered tap root of the plant can be found in a variety of colors; gold, cream, red, purple, blue, black and green. Each is considered to have different nutritional and therapeutic properties. Cream colored roots are the most widely grown, and are favored for their enhanced sweetness and size. Blue and black maca are considered to contain the most energy promoting properties. Red maca has been clinically shown to reduce prostate size. The most commonly exported form of maca is maca flour, which is ground from the hard, dried roots. In Peru, maca is prepared in a variety of ways: fresh, dried, baked and fermented. Maca is considered safe to eat as any other vegetable food. Clinical research demonstrates it to be a powerful fertility enhancer for both men and women. It nourishes the endocrine system, and has been shown to be beneficial for problems associated with PMS and Menopause. Clinical trials show it improves semen quality and alleviates sexual dysfunction. Maca provides sustained physical energy, mental acuity, and enhances the function of the immune system. That is to say, love and the earth are best celebrated every day. Here are seven low-budget out of the box ideas for Valentine’s Day that are both romantic and healthy.

Enjoy a breathtaking view of Lake Tahoe, snow-shoeing in Mt. Rose Meadows. Many winter sporting goods places rent the necessary gear. Or, just bundle up in your best wet weather apparel, and enjoy the snow. Go sledding if you’re feeling adventurous. Cozy up with at hot beverage afterward.

2.) Ice-Skating:

Holding hands and skating under the downtown city lights, is old-school romantic, you’ve got to admit it. The moon will be waxing, (almost full) illuminating the night sky. Enjoy the many restaurants, cafes, theaters and night clubs nearby. There is plenty of centralized parking so you can enjoy an evening stroll by the river too.

bound to manifest itself elsewhere too. Take a ballroom dance class and learn a method of communication without words. There are many styles of dance that perfectly compliment the romance of Valentine ’s Day: The sultry tango, red-hot salsa, playful swing dance, and Rumba, the dance of love.

4.) Acro Yoga:

Acro Yoga combines traditional yoga asanas with Thai massage and acrobatics, offering up a movement practice that is both playful and therapeutic. Local classes and workshops provide a safe environment to learn how to balance your sweetheart on the soles of your feet.

5.) Spa Day:

Nurture yourselves with a soak in a natural hot springs. Many area springs have massage therapists and other wonderful spa services on site as well. If traveling to a spring is out of your budget, create a home spa instead. Gather simple massage oils, bath salts and other home spa materials. Check out a massage book from the library, and learn how to pamper one another together.

3.) Ballroom Dancing:

6.) Cook:

Instead of going out to eat, stay in and cook for one another. Divide the menu, or collaborate on a delicious meal. Create a romantic environment in your own home. Decorate with candles, flowers and incense. Play beautiful music. With just a little creativity, a familiar space can be magically transformed.

7.) Give back:

Instead of indulging the consumer frenzy of disposable furry pink toys and plastic heart shaped whatever, celebrate your love by extending that love to your community. Choose to volunteer with an established group, or do something simple, yet helpful, such as cleaning up trash in your neighborhood, or donating to a thrift store. Even a small random act of kindness has the power to transform some one’s day. HB

If you have never had a massage, doing so together can give you a greater sense of safety and comfort. Here’s how it works: you are both in the same room together, with two separate massage tables. You each receive a massage from your own licensed professional massage therapist, so while you may be wanting a deeper, more therapeutic massage, your partner can enjoy whatever type of massage he/she may want, such as a relaxing Swedish, hot stone or aromatherapy. listening to calming music. Although couples massage is generally considered for romantic partners, it also offers a wonderful reprieve for mothers and daughters or girlfriends on an outing. Do keep in mind that you will be dressing and undressing in the same room, so it may not be appropriate for everyone, such as a first date. Oftentimes, people will receive their first professional massage while on vacation, a cruise or at a resort. This can be very pricey. There are local businesses offering excellent couple’s massage at reasonable rates. This gives you a chance to get acquainted with massage while finding a massage therapist who you feel comfortable with for future sessions, while keeping some green in your pocket. Staying physically, mentally and emotionally healthy are key to our individual needs that help us live a balanced life. In addition to this is the daily challenge of keeping that balance with our significant other and loved ones. With all of the hustle and bustle, it has become far too easy to let time slip by without so much as a simple gesture of showing how much we care and appreciate those closest to us. This is the month for love and reminds us to stop the daily grind and turn that simple gesture into something more. Massage for two does just that! In fact, once experienced, most couples tend to continue getting a massage together as part of their monthly routine, recognizing the importance of their “play time” to help them stay connected. HB

with food. This book is dead set on helping you see the light at the end of the raw foods tunnel. In fact, there is a little section on page 37 that asks you to write down your intentions on “what you wish to create in your relationship with food.” It is another great step because once you write something down on paper you’re more likely to follow through with it. After you have an idea of where you are coming from and how you are going to proceed, they offer a few more ideas to help you on your journey. There are three sections that breakdown your food in relation to the garden, to your plate and to the planet itself. Most people do not spend time thinking about their food, in terms of the life it lives or our responsibilities to it. This section is the piece of the puzzle that ties it all together. At this point, you should feel excited about the upcoming sections. This is when you get to start eating! There are 29 yummy and delightful recipes that provide healthy, energy-filled nourishment. From beverages to desserts, you’ll find something that peaks your interest. As you leaf through the pages, notice the other “juicy morsels” they include. There are tidbits of information, scattered throughout the rest of the book, on one of the particular ingredients of each recipe. This cookbook is fun, easy-to-read and informative. It offers a realistic perspective on raw foods. It is definitely one to have on hand as you begin to shift your food lifestyle. HB

“The Healing Patch Cookbook,” written by Julie Cara Hoffenberg with Sarah Woodward, is touted as a gentle transition from cooked foods into raw foods. I believe that is a tall order for one little cookbook, as our lifestyles, livelihood and society are based on everything with convenience, fast and faster in mind. However, this book is not just for cooking. It truly does offer more than a litany of recipes. The material provides real information that might just offer that “gentle transition” they speak of. Like any good book, it possesses a story. The first few pages dive into the reason behind the cookbook itself, giving you a quick glimpse at the authors’ lives. It then goes into an almost self-help process, assisting you in approaching this concept of raw versus cooked; how you will begin your transition into the unfamiliar. After you find the path that fits your style and needs, they start digging into your relationship, with food that is. It is an interesting perspective, yet very basic by nature. our heart is under attack. Like a disease that ravages your body, a devious killer eats away at your capacity to love. You need to be aware of this social epidemic so that you are better able to fight back and protect yourself. Ultimately, the life of your soul hangs in the balance.

Entitlement is a big part of the age of the psychopath. Its thinking goes like this: “Not only does the world owe me a living, it owes me happiness as well. I ought to be able to have what everyone else has, and it’s ok to steal, lie or cheat to get what ought to be mine.” Entitlement extends to the belief that tragedy should not happen to you, and if it

does, someone is going to pay. Our society is increasingly litigious and even love relationships have a contractual air for many people. If lawyers could figure out a way, people would be suing God. In the age of the psychopath there is no self-reflection or self-examination, no exploration of your own role and motives in a situation. The only learning that takes place is how to beat the system, and how to manipulate other people to get what you want. The psychopath does not just lack the humility to reflect on and censure himself. He has absolutely no interest in such things to begin with.

This self-serving and manipulative approach to life is encouraged in our society. You see it on display in “reality” television shows, politics, business and celebrity tabloids. You have probably encountered it in your own relationships. In the age of the psychopath relationships are expendable, especially if they become too “messy” or no longer meet your goals. Honesty, integrity and commitment are often viewed as outmoded throwbacks of a bygone age. This apLife’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

persona. The persona is the role you play in social settings. It is meant to be an instrument of your true self, but in the age of the psychopath it is primarily a tool of disguise. It is something to be “managed” by publicity and marketing consultants, for example. Crimes such as rape or stealing millions of dollars from the public are not a time for genuine atonement, but rather a time for persona damage control. This perspective relies on the premise that with enough “spin” and time, the public will forget most anything. In the age of the psychopath, who you appear to be is far more important than who or what you actually are. Because of these psychopathic trends within society, the capacity for love and feeling is undeveloped in many people. Quality relationships, based in integrity, are increasingly rare. Many individuals who have been hurt in psychopathic relationships sometimes never open up to other people, or life, ever again. Others become like those who have hurt them. Only a small minority emerge from hurtful encounters wiser, and with a willingness to give and receive love still intact.

PSYCHOTHERAPY

Individuals with undeveloped hearts have not learned how to truly love or attach in a caring way with other people. They do not risk genuine intimacy. Love builds a feeling connection between people that enables them to sacrifice for something greater than themselves. The developed heart is able to empathize, to see and feel things from another’s point of view. With a developed heart you are able to value people in their own right, and not just for what they can provide you.

It is easy to love when you are “in love.” But the measure of mature love is how you love when you are not in love. It is the way you respond when you are hurt, angry or resentful about something that your partner or a friend has done. With a mature heart you use this difficulty as an opportunity for learning, personal growth and growth in the relationship. With an undeveloped heart you give free reign to your anger; or you call quits to the relationship without any sincere effort at resolving the problem or understanding your role in it.

www.renocarsonpsychologist.com

The path of the mature heart requires humility and courage. Humility is required because love comes from your soul, not your ego. Your ego’s role is to be the servant of love, not its master or possessor. Courage is required because love is a letting go process. It means taking the risk of honesty--with yourself and others--and not trying to control what you get in return. Your capacity to love is deepened through consistent effort in bringing understanding and integrity to all of your relationships. Like a stone polished by the ocean, this process takes time. But the thread that is your love may be the very fiber that holds the world, your family or your friendships together. HB

Our Daily Meds explains how the prescription med industry is in bed with doctors by paying physicians to be their so-called consultants, to sit on corporate advisory boards and to lecture other physicians. The prescription med industry pays for up to 80 percent of the continuing medical education doctors need to maintain their licenses. Doctors are no longer independent gatekeepers who keep us safe from drugs we don’t need, because far too many of them are financially tied to the industry.

Allopathic (conventional) medicine is very big business. As a result, our conditioning is to run to a doctor for every symptom. We have not been taught to believe that our own bodies actually do the healing. Instead, we’ve been programmed to believe that doctors and drugs are the answer. Actually most drugs simply affect the symptom, not the cause. That’s like erasing the skid marks after a traffic accident, or repairing the crashed cars, thinking that the auto repair and removal of the skid marks will stop future accidents. Go to www.mercola.com, the most popular natural health website in America, and watch the video entitled The Town of Allopath.

We are the only country that doesn’t control prescription drug prices. We are one of only two countries in the world that allow the drug companies to market directly to the public. So is it any wonder that we have such a huge illegal drug problem in this country, with prescription drugs being hawked in print advertisements and constantly on TV? Children grow up with this programming, hearing from a very young age how you need this or that pill to feel good and be happy.

We each have our own pharmaceutical company in our body, which knows exactly how much of each chemical and hormone we need in order to be healthy. Working in concert with our positive thoughts, beliefs and expectations, that pharmacy creates what we need when we need it. But it cannot override negative, fearful or worried thoughts forever. It can repair the damage caused by toxic thoughts, beliefs and stress for many years, but finally the barrage is too much, and the cells begin to break down or begin multiplying in an unnatural way.

The genius of our system is that if we start changing our thoughts right now, even after years of negative thinking, our bodies can begin to heal. Every organ and tissue in our body has its own vibrational frequency. After many years of vibrational abuse, those frequencies may have changed from normal healthy frequencies to dysfunctional frequencies. Scientists in Germany have developed a machine called Ondamed (pronounced on-da-med), which beams healthy frequencies into the body; thereby entraining the dysfunctional frequencies back to healthy ones. Professionals in sports medicine were the first to see the value in this therapy because of the need of fast healing for professional athletes. It is now being used for all kinds of ailments, and serves as proof of the effectiveness of vibrational medicine. Written By Dr. Martin Rutherford DC

Chronic diseases--especially “fibro”--are all the result of multiple vicious cycles occurring in the body. Vicious cycles that damage tissues and require an approach that addresses the different systems of the body that have broken down and are combining together to create the seemingly confusing constellation of symptoms that have come to be called fibromyalgia.

The Confusing Path to Find Relief

T

he fibromyalgia patient really Sleep, Blessed Sleep II has nowhere to go. Rarely is the “fibro” patient managed properly, relative to the pathophysiology of the condition. The medical model is far too simplistic-considering fibromyalgia a muscular or “psychological” problem--and doesn’t in any way address the functional changes for any length of time associated with or resulting from the “disease” (in other words, what is causing the pain!). So no matter what is done in the medical model, the patient doesn’t feel better. The fibromyalgia story is a painful, confusing, demoralizing one. Mostly affecting females, it debilitates the patient physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. The patient deteriorates slowly in the gut, brain (can’t think, forgets why they went into a room, cannot say the words they want to say) and energy. NO ONE BELIEVES THEM because they look fine, and besides the doctor says they are fine. After all, “all of the tests” are normal. The fibromyalgia sufferer knows they are not fine--but no one can “find it.” They are not disabled yet. They start to experience all of the symptoms. Finally enough tissues are destroyed in various systems of the body that some tests are positive, but are they the cause? They go on drugs (frequently the wrong ones), some of their blood work stabilizes and now they are told they are fine again, but they’re not! They still feel terrible, confused and scared. After medical intervention fails they try “natural” medicine. Thus begins the search for the magic herb, or vitamin, mineral, diet or procedure. They try one after another after another, but nothing ever stabilizes them. It’s the dart on the wall method, and it is doomed to fail and it does. The fibromyalgia patient’s spirit is broken. ties, etc. must be thoroughly assessed together at the same time; and handled in the proper order for the best chance of improving or resolving the condition completely.

A functional medicine approach is required. The key to success is a thorough history with acute attention to the multiple systems of the body; a thorough neurological workup, and the appropriate chronic pain testing procedures (blood, saliva, urine, DNA) to determine the triggers and metabolic imbalances involved in that person’s individualized situation. Only then can a natural medicine, non-drug, approach be utilized to Some of the more prominent systems greatly enhance the fibromyalgia sufinvolved in contributing to the pain are ferers overall quality of life, or possibly the brain, immune system, misdiagnosed even “cure” the condition. Wolfe Often times we get confused as clinicians and only look for the triggers. Many doctors mistake the triggers--that event which sets off the internal vicious cycles--as the cause. This approach is also doomed to failure and can give no more than temporary relief. Many fibromyalgia sufferers trace the beginning of their symptoms back to a major infection (pneumonia, bladder, yeast infection). For others it is a trauma (birth of a child, car accident). For some it is toxic exposures (cleaning fluids, paint fumes). Severe emotional stresses (divorce, death of a loved one). These are the triggers, not the causative mechanism that is currently creating the symptomatic downward spiral of symptoms the patient is experiencing.

Sex Gender and Heart Disease Written By Michael Gerber, MD, HM

ale vs. female death figures due to heart disease are pretty interesting. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, males are always ahead of females in heart disease deaths. However, after age 25 the ratio goes up to 1.5 times as many men are afflicted. By age 64, the ratio is up to over 2.5 times as many deaths for men vs. women (see graph). Why would this be? One major explanation is that estrogen, the dominant women’s sex hormone, is protective against heart disease. When estrogen falls after menopause female heart attack rates start to approach that of men’s. Anatomically men’s and women’s hearts are different. Men’s coronary arteries tend to be more like hard pipes where as women’s coronaries are softer. Men tend to build up more calcification in their arteries (90 percent) than women (30 percent) who have heart attacks. African American women are at a greater risk of dying from heart disease African American women are 1.69 times more likely to die from heart attacks than Caucasian women. If an African American woman has a heart attack, she is 69 percent more likely to die of that heart attack than a Caucasian woman. By the time African American women are in their late 60’s, 79 percent will Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

have developed high blood pressure, according to Dr. Judith Reichman. Heart disease is the number one killer of women It is estimated that one out of every two women will die from heart disease. Heart disease kills ten times more women than breast cancer each year, and more than all other cancers combined. One in ten women aged 45 to 64 already suffers from some form of heart disease. Nearly one fourth of women who died of heart disease were between the ages of 35 and 44.

The Stress Connection Recent articles have shown that high levels of cortisol (made in the adrenal glands on top of the kidneys) produced when under stress increases the amount of plaque in the coronary arteries. Cortisol is also associated with perivascular inflammation, which causes inflammatory heart disease. Clearly, stress reduction techniques and supplements are a key in managing heart disease. Heart Disease Prevention Healthy lifestyles are a very important beginning to avoid or postpone heart disease. Eliminating Trans fats (such as margarine and fried foods), sugar, smoking, excessive alcohol intake and damaged cholesterol (burned fat) reduces cardiac risk. Maintaining regular exercise and sleep pattern, blood pressure and blood sugar monitoring, stress reduction techniques, such as meditation and Yoga, and taking nutritional supplements are all important to reduce heart disease risk. There have been great advances in Western approaches to heart disease learned from the study of biochemistry and plant biology. Vitamin C is necessary for collagen, (blood vessels and ligament) formation and is most concentrated in our adrenal glands and brain. It is a must for vascular health. Remember, man is one of the only animals that does not make his own vitamin C. Magnesium is the most important mineral for vascular health and you cannot get enough from a standard American diet. Low magnesium levels can cause the spasm of arteries that lead to heart attacks and strokes. Removing the toxic heavy metals including lead, cadmium, mercury, February 2010

arsenic, aluminum and others via chelation is very important. Supplements that relax the lining of the arteries (endothelium) such as arginine, citruline, elagic acid which increase nitric oxide (arterial dilatory) are very important. Coenzme Q10 gives the heart energy and is used around the world for heart failure and for recuperation after heart operations. There are specific herbs that are heart friendly including Hawthorne berry, Cactus grande, Convallaria, Spigelia, Aesculus, Avena sativa and many more. HB References: 1. www.cdc.gov. is just one month old, yet most New Years resolutions are as distant a memory as midnight fireworks. Give up sweets. Give up alcohol. Give up wheat. Focused on the negative, most of these resolutions fail. Many people consume even more than usual as they try to deny themselves such pleasures. Put intentions for a healthy New Year back on track by building new enjoyable habits to replace the old. Instead of focusing on the negative, enjoy something positive. Instead of giving up morning pastries, savor delicious fruit smoothies. The new choice is immediately enjoyable, and has long term health benefits. The short term pleasure of drinking a delicious smoothie prompts another smoothie the next day and the next. Suddenly smoothie drinking becomes a habit.

Many sludge through winter weighed down by the remnants of holiday overindulgence. Sweet treats during the holidays make resolutions to stop the sugar hard to keep. The pleasures associated with sugary sweets impact the body beyond the taste buds. Affecting the same neural receptors as heroin and opium, eating lots of sugar can quickly become a strong habit. Weeks of eating this way can result in sluggish digestion and a feeling of lethargy. Many walk through life this way oblivious that anything is wrong because it has become their version of normal. Successfully navigating the first few days of building new habits may be the toughest part of the process. Focus on enjoyable parts of the new routine to reinforce the new behavior. People begin to feel fantastic after a couple weeks of eating more healthfully, and this is when the new habit really takes hold. As a person purges the toxic results of their old ways, they gain new energy from their improved digestion. Colon hydrotherapy can accelerate this process, and provide a feeling of wellness quickly. Imagine removing the stagnant putrefied remains of last month’s hamburger. Suddenly the body has less sludge weighing it down and more space to quickly digest a tasty smoothie. The sooner someone experiences the benefits of changing their habits, the stronger their new habits will become. Colon hydrotherapy clears the way for a fabulous feeling body. A person can crave goodness, and this is the goal. As a healthier lifestyle takes hold, people begin to desire nourishing food. Cauliflower soup and salad will sound like a great dinner, and the happier healthier body will feel satisfied by it. Some of the old habits may recur on occasion, but only as an occasional pleasure, woven into

PMS: It’s Real. It’s Treatable. Written by Rebecca Gelber, MD

our jeans don’t fit. You have a headache and zits across your chin. Worst of all, tiny hassles and slights you’d normally ignore can push you to tears, rage or both. You’re normally so sane. What happened? Up to 80 percent of women experience PMS, 10 percent with symptoms so severe that they find prescription medication necessary. Although pharmaceuticals such as antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications may help, many find these give incomplete relief while causing their own side effects including further weight gain and mental fogginess. Fortunately for most women, a combination of dietary changes, exercise, supplements and hormonal balancing can dramatically reduce symptoms. Although cravings for refined carbohydrates, salt, caffeine, alcohol and unhealthy fats are all common during PMS, avoiding these toxins will minimize symptoms. Eating multiple small balanced meals per day reduces both munchies and mood swings. Sleep and exercise are also critical to decrease stress hormones and release endorphins. Serotonin is a key neurotransmitter, critical in regulating sleep, mood and appetite. Decreased premenstrual levels contribute to depression, anxiety and carbohydrate cravings. Many prescription antidepressants used for PMS increase availability of this chemical, but levels can be naturally raised by supplements such as 5-HTP or foods rich in tryptophan, serotonin’s precursor amino acid. Chocolate, eggs, fish and meats, dairy products, nuts and seeds are all good tryptophan sources. Chromium, green tea and zinc may decrease carbohydrate cravings as well. During the premenstrual period, pro-inflammatory prostaglandin levels rise, contributing to cramping, bloating and back pain. An anti-

Several other supplements show promise. Calcium, magnesium and vitamin D3 work together to decrease cramping and bloating and are frequently combined in supplements. B vitamins, particularly B6, are important in decreasing both depression and water retention. Finally, hormones play a key role in symptoms. In those suffering PMS, during the weeks between ovulation and menses, estrogen levels remain too high relative to progesterone, resulting in estrogen dominance. For many women, treatment with progesterone during this time can alleviate some, and often all PMS symptoms. Progesterone is a natural diuretic and counters the bloating effect of estrogen. It also has an impressive effect on sleep quality, especially when taken at night. This may be through up regulation of GABA, a calming neurotransmitter in the brain. Normalizing the estrogen/progesterone ratio often decreases headaches, breast tenderness, mood swings and acne as well. Over-thecounter progesterone creams are available, but often give poor delivery and inadequate dosing. Prescription formulations are available in both creams and capsules. Provera, a pharmaceutical progesterone substitute, is not bio-identical and studies have linked it development of cancers, particularly of the breast.

blocks testosterone’s effects, may relieve these symptoms. PMS is a distinctly individual constellation of symptoms, and for each woman, a different combination of these strategies will prove effective. The key is knowledge that PMS is both real and treatable, and there is no reason to resign yourself to spending a quarter of your life depressed, angry, bloated and miserable. HB

Estrogen and progesterone are not the only hormones that come into play in PMS symptoms. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found some degree of thyroid dysfunction in over 90 percent of severe PMS sufferers. Testing, and treatment when indicated, may alleviate depression, weight gain, body aches and other symptoms common to both disorders. Finally, high testosterone levels occasionally contribute to irritability, acne and water retention. This is particularly common in younger women. Concentrated-C Super Food

e’ve all heard that vitamin C supports overall health and the immune system but there is a lot more to know about this nutrient, its benefits and most ideal sources. Did you know that your body can assimilate vitamins and minerals more efficiently when in whole food form? It makes sense! Our bodies were designed to eat the foods that nature provides. In an ideal world those foods are rich in minerals, vitamins, amino acids, anti-oxidants and life force. Imagine the density of nutrition found in wild foods grown in virgin soil, unadulterated by chemicals and over cultivation. Today’s diet contain a fraction of the nutrition that our grandparents received because of depleted soils, chemical agriculture, long storage and transit times and over processing. Therefore our bodies are craving for easy to absorb bio-available nourishment in a whole plant form. Super foods fulfill our body’s longing. Camu-Camu is one such food gaining attention by scientist, doctors and discerning health consumers. Camu-Camu (myrcia dubia) often called bayberry fruit grows on a small tree that thrives in the lush, enriched soil of the Amazon Rainforest flood plains. Because of Camu’s anti-viral, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant, qualities, its uses are numerous but diverse. Most of these benefits are linked to its high vitamin C content plus the high content of bioflavonoids. When used alone vitamin C is not effective, it must be accompanied by bioflavonoids. For example scurvy cannot be cured by synthetic vitamin C. Only natural sources of vitamin C, which also contain natural bioflavonoids, are effective. Camu-Camu is a superior choice over synthetic vitamin C to support and strengthen the immune system, liver, lungs, lymphatic and urinary systems. Plant based vitamin C such as Camu-Camu has the additional advantages of being nonirratating to sensitive stomachs and because it is a complete source, one or two grams a day is as effective as five to six grams of synthetic vitamin C. Camu, as a natural plant source of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) contains thirty times more vitamin C than an orange and also provided a significant amount of B vitamins, beta-carotene, minerals and amino acids including significant amounts of iron, niacin (vitamin B3), riboflavin (vitamin B2), thiamin (vitamin B1), potassium and essential amino acids leucine and serine. As the highest recorded source of vitamin C on the planet, no other form can give your body so much compacted energy and support. Continued on Page 38

BOOKREVIEW

Muscle Explosion Reviewed By Ffjorren Zolfaghar

sually, when I reach for a book on health, fitness or nutrition, I do not go for the one with a massive, ripped bicep on the cover; regardless if it is a female or male bicep. My mind would subconsciously pass right over that type of book because, quite frankly, there is no part of me that wants to look like that bicep. Well, sometimes you can’t judge a book by its cover. Author Nick Nilsson wrote “Muscle Explosion, 28 Days to Maximum Mass,” mainly for people looking to gain muscle mass. “It forces the body to build muscle. It’s a really good program for hard-gainers,” Nilsson said. It is literally a 28 day program that allows you to build muscle and strength in a very short period of time. The second week of the program compresses six months of training into one week. The book also covers basic nutrition and supplementation, which are both considered a large part of the program’s success. The actual program is laid out at the beginning of the book, in an easy-to-follow grid format, where the rest of the book provides details around each aspect of the program. There are also photos of suggested exercises that illustrate proper form and follow through. So, what’s the big deal? How does this book differ from all of the other body-building books? Nilsson’s approach is definitely not the norm. He shakes it up with innovative methods of building muscle and strength, helping a person gain five to 10 pounds of muscle in one month. Reducing your caloric intake to low levels, eliminating protein and overtraining are just a few of the strategies he uses. I am always up for something new and diverse, but the look of that bicep haunts me.

February 2010

“Women don’t have the hormonal capability to get completely ripped, so they would not end up looking like a female body builder,” Nilsson said. But, I don’t really need to gain muscle. I just want to be lean and strong, so I can run and ski longer, without the fatigue. Nilsson said that I could mitigate the weight gain by keeping my caloric intake lower than what he recommends. Then, I would see the muscle strength increase, but not the muscle mass. That sounds great to me. If I can increase muscle strength, I will increase my endurance, which will benefit me in all of the activities I participate in. Overall, it sounds like a program I would like to try. INGREDIENTWATCH Written by Lissie Lyles

ith diabetes and obesity statistics at epidemic proportions, it’s no wonder that most Americans are reassessing their relationship to sugar. Countless studies indicate that our increased consumption of refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup have contributed to a host of health problems, many never experienced by humans until our modern times. “Natural” sugars and sugar alternatives are popping up everywhere these days, but, as with anything else, not all sweeteners are created equal. Some sweeteners are better suited for certain foods and methods of preparation than others. Some “natural” sweeteners are not necessarily as healthy as they claim. Here is a guide to navigating the aisles of refined sugar alternatives:

The Skinny on Natural Sweeteners

the ground by the tree’s roots. It adds a wonderful flavor to most baked goods. There is a huge difference between organic and inorganic maple syrup! Many commercial maple syrups are really just maple flavored high fructose corn syrup. Even worse, maple syrups that are not certified organic may have been processed with formaldehyde. YUCK! Make sure to choose certified organic maple syrup.

Rapadura: Rapadura is the commercial name for dehydrated cane sugar juice, which has been used in India for thousands of years. It is rich in minerals, such as silica. Its taste is very similar to table sugar, and it can be used in baking in the same way. Large amounts of Rapadura can upset blood sugar levels, so it is best used in moderation; it may not be suitable for diabetics.

Raw Honey: Honey that

has not been heated to temperatures greater than 117 degrees is considered raw. Raw honey contains high levels of amylases, enzymes that digest carbohydrates. For this reason it is the perfect sweetener for whole grain cereals, porridges and toast. Glucose tolerance tests indicate that, for most people, honey does not upset blood sugar levels as severely as refined sugar. Raw honey has traditionally been used as a medicine since ancient times. It has therapeutic applications for relieving morning sickness, bladder infections, arthritis, digestive issues, bad breath, infertility, sore throats and migraines (just to name a few). Due to its low water content, it establishes a poor environment for bad bacteria to grow, making it a great natural preservative. Raw honey loses most of its medicinal qualities when heated, so it is best used in raw recipes, and low heat foods.

Maple Syrup: The concentrated sap of huge, deciduous

trees, maple syrup is rich in trace minerals, brought up from

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

Stevia: Stevia is a traditional South American medicinal herb. It can be found in the form of a powdered leaf from the plant, or a water-extracted liquid. Stevia is another sweetener that doubles as a medicine. Recent research indicates that it does not raise the blood sugar level, it may even lower it! Studies also reveal that it may be therapeutic for candida, when most sweeteners are known to aggravate the condition. A little stevia goes a long way! Just a pinch is equal in sweetness to a tablespoon of sugar. It is not well suited for most baking recipes. Stevia is an excellent medicinal sweetener when added to herbal teas, salad dressings, smoothies and raw desserts. Alcohol extracted stevia, and refined “white” stevia are not as beneficial. Unrefined stevia is dark green in color. Agave nectar: Despite what the fancy bottle might say, Agave Nectar’s claims of being a “raw” health food are greatly

exaggerated. For one thing, agave syrup is highly processed. The liquid of the plant is boiled and reduced for several days at high temperatures in order to manufacture the syrup. This inhibits the enzymatic activity present in living foods, thus agave syrup cannot be considered raw. Recent nutrition studies show that Agave syrup has a 90 percent concentration of fructose, the remaining 10 percent glucose. High fructose corn syrup only contains 55 percent fructose, to put things in perspective. Research suggests that fructose actually promotes disease more readily than glucose, and is especially taxing on the liver. “Raw” or “Natural” Sugar, Turbinado, Sucanat Sugar or Florida Crystals: These are all refined sugars, devoid of any nutritional value. Don’t be fooled!

The old adage “let thy food be thy medicine, and thy medicine be thy food” can even be applied to sweet foods. Choose your sweeteners wisely and you will be able to have that cake, eat it, and feel good too! HB References: 1. Fallon, Sally. Nourishing Traditions, Revised second edition. Coconut or palm sugar: Coconut sugar, also known as “palm sugar,” looks a lot like brown sugar and has a subtle caramel flavor. Derived from the nectar of the palm blossoms, this palm sugar has a long heritage in East Asian medicine and cuisine. It is mineral rich, containing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It can be used in place of sugar in any baking recipe and has a low glycemic index of 35. The Food and Agriculture Organization reports that coconut sugar is the single most sustainable type of sweetener in the world. Tropical palms are ecologically beneficial, and produce 50-75 percent more sugar per acre than cane sugar. They have been shown to build soil, regenerate ecosystems and require little water. Coconut palm sugar can be tapped without harming the tree itself for over 70 years! Ninety eight percent of the palm sugar industry is made up of small holder owned companies, as opposed to less than five percent small holder ownership for sugar cane.

ASTROLOGYHEALTH

ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOK

vital, life-giving ideas in a time of profound change Written By Eric Francis

Horoscope for Health | February - 2011

F

ebruary begins with a stunning New Moon in Aquarius on Feb. 2nd. This time of year is called Imbolc, or the Midwinter holiday of Celtic times. This is one of the most potent energy points of the year, a kind of acceleration point on the way into springtime. The word Imbolc means “in the belly.” It’s like the spiritual child within is, day by day, becoming stronger and closer to being an independent critter. Many of the horoscopes below have themes that feel like rebirth, contacting creative passion and nourishing the deeply concealed child within. If you feel the urge to bring that child out to the front of your life, I suggest you give him or her a chance to do what feels good. Late in the month, Chiron moves into Pisces, which will help you see the big picture and tap into your deeper feelings. Aries (March 20-April 19) Actual independence may not exist in human relationships, but for the sake of discussion, let’s call it the difference between thinking for yourself, or not. Your astrology, both in the current moment and for a long stretch of the future, is about you doing precisely that. There is a necessary first step--noticing all the ways you’re going along with the gang. There is a necessary second step, which is taking the risk of doing something else. Generally, you know you’ve reached the second step because you feel like it’s risky, like you might somehow be cast off. Encountering that fear consciously is vital, so that you can overcome it. Think of this as an initiation--as becoming a full-fledged member of the tribe, because you’re willing to be uncompromisingly yourself.

Taurus (April 19-May 20) Every religion professes that God’s love is more important than human love. Then we can get caught in a game where human love becomes a religious enterprise. What the two typically have in common is guilt. Can you imagine your relationships being free of this emotion? It may be challenging, though think of it this way. Start with the fact that you exist. You belong here, and you have a right to possess your existence. You’re not the property of anyone else--be it a person or an ideology. To act on that takes more strength than most people think they have, yet strength is built through exercise. Learning to be free is an ongoing journey, including regular reminders that others are free as well. When this inner process starts to gather momentum, it makes a lot more sense.

Gemini (May 20-June 21) What is so compelling about a certain person with whom you seem to be growing enthralled? In what ways do they challenge you? In particular, how does their presence relate to what you witnessed in your childhood family? One potential is that this encounter is dismantling your early examples of relating, the ones you once thought of as the only kind that existed. The other is that the situa-

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

tion is so similar to the lives of your parents and grandparents as to be indistinguishable. A lot depends on your discernment right now. If you find yourself needing to make decisions you don’t feel strong enough to make, that is a sign to listen to. Remember that you have the faith to live your life your way. Let me remind you how much depends on your doing so.

Cancer (June 21-July 22) Consider whether your relationships have had the quality of sacrifice and how that came to be. You grapple with possessing two profoundly different tendencies in your most personal encounters, each of which seems to negate the other. One is attraction to traditional, stable situations. The other has shades of potent individuality and group consciousness, which are closely related (only individuals can be part of a group). Based on the first quality, you crave deep one-to-one bonding, yet the models you’ve used throughout your life are falling apart. Based on the second, you’re likely feeling the need to be absolutely yourself, and to seek others on a similar mission. All of this may be leaving you feeling less than normal-and if so, congratulations. There is no such thing; there never was.

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) This will be an easy few weeks to find yourself getting totally wrapped up in the experiences of the people around you. If that works for you, and it just may be perfectly natural, then go for it. If not, I can make a simple suggestion--meditating for a short time every day will keep you centered. Not for long; you need perhaps half an hour of focused time. This will help you open a tap into yourself that’s continually available. This will free you to do something unusual, which is to be in a space of self-awareness and conscious self-relating, no mater what is going on in your environment. Whatever that is, it sure looks interesting, fun and just a little weird. The time you take for yourself will allow you to throw yourself in with full abandon.

36

February 2010

feel about yourself, the more money you can make. Another way to consider the equation is that your life-affirming feelings about yourself are your greatest asset. You have a truly unusual opportunity to tap into this idea in the coming weeks, and in the process to leave many of your old doubts behind. One of your most deeply held values is equanimity; that is, a state of authentic fairness. Events are likely to demonstrate that this quality must include you first; it goes both ways. Count yourself in. In doing so, you will set yourself free from the disappointments not only of your own past, but of past generations. This is a radical gesture. So be it.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) You seem to be incredibly busy--over the top. And, you may have an idea that you’re going to get results. I would propose that you’ll get the same results with a lot less effort; therefore, you can put the formidable power of your mind onto the assignment of figuring out how to do less, work less and take better care of yourself. You will have some brilliant ideas for how to do this, though I would propose that your desire is what is going to make this real. One of those ways of taking care involves how you direct the high-voltage energy of your mind. You are like a live wire; I suggest you figure out how to ground your energy, prioritize and take action based on the one thing you’re certain you want the most.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) Feminism typically proposes that women must stand up to men. I think there is something more significant, which is the need for women to stand up to their mothers: to the ideas that came from them (particularly about relationships), to the emotional issues passed down the generations, and in particular to mothers’ frequent refusal to allow younger women to be free. This affects all of us, regardless of our sex or gender. A fiery New Moon in your birth sign conjunct Mars (planet of desire) and Ceres (the old story with mom, or mom’s treatment of her daughter) encourages you to blaze the way forward, away from your past and your childhood; to vote for your own independence by bonding with independent women; and to encourage the daughters around you to be free people.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) You’re about to experience a rare burst of creative energy, and it looks like you’re in an environment where you’re truly appreciated for that. I don’t suggest you concern yourself with the second part, any more than you need in order to be grateful and welcoming. Notice the ways in which the people around you are happy and willing to support you, and get back to what you’re creating. Start while the idea is hot and fresh. As you move through your journey, you will probably encounter various sensations--doubt, fear, inspiration and a sense of release--but remember the sense of mission that’s at the core of what you’re doing. In a few words, I could describe that as making direct contact with the curious, raging child within you, notably, in the healthiest possible way.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) Your deepest desires are stirring; they seem to be coming to life, making themselves known to you as if they had an existence of their own. But they don’t, and they’re not separate from you--you give your desires life, and you may continue to do so a little more with each passing day. What you want often has a feeling of deniability, as if it’s not quite up to existing in the world; that is a form of doubt, and it’s rapidly being replaced by passion. It is true that to experience this passion you have to leave old grief behind, and at the same time you must risk future disappointment. It will be worth taking those chances. Your dreams are wild and you can now set them free, which is to say, you can set yourself free. HB

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) Do you wonder where your insecurities come from, or what it will take to create a space where you feel safe and welcome? You’re more accustomed to living on the edge of what you think of as safety than in the middle. You’re now being invited to go deeper first into the concept of what comprises a solid and dependable space--and then the reality of whatever that idea is. This does not need to take time; most of the time it does take is likely to be spent in a kind of negotiation about who you might betray by giving yourself what you need and want. I suggest you raise that question to full consciousness, and that you leave no stone unturned--especially the sense that you’re betraying someone by being free.

THE ABOVE IS NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN AS MEDICAL ADVICE. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) If you have an idea, run with it. It may not be perfect or up to Hollywood scale, but your deeper vision clearly is. Beginning something is the biggest step--and the most significant. You will establish an energetic anchor, spark your creative process, and commence a situation where one idea leads to the next. While you’re doing this, remember that true creative process is really about self-creation. You’re being born along with what you’re making, or whatever vision you’re bringing into the world. This is excellent news, and I am guessing you’ll agree. I can tell you that where you are at the beginning of your experience bears little resemblance to where you’ll be when it’s at full fruition, except that one led directly to the other, and there will be many innovations along the way.

Constipation

The Camu fruit, also known as the “feel good fruit” offers a broad range of health promoting properties such as: •

supports immune function

promotes healthy skin, hair, gums and nails

assists in managing adrenal gland fatigue

enhances memory functions and positive emotions

helpful in reduction of stress, anxiety, and pain

aids in anti-aging processes

suppresses appetite for natural weight control

Written By Shelby Molchan The word constipation is derived from the Latin word “constipatus,” meaning “to press or crowd together, to pack or to cram.” So to be constipated means difficulty moving the bowels due to packed accumulation of feces. However, constipation can also exist while the bowels seem to be moving normally despite an accumulation of feces in pockets of the colon. Celebrities that have reportedly used Colon Hydrotherapy to combat constipation, loose weight, improve physical appearance, boost emotional well-being and sharpen mental capabilities include Ben Affleck, Courtney Love, Andie McDowell, Janet Jackson, Cindy Crawford, Alicia Silverstone, Liv Tyler and Paris Hilton. Autointoxication is one result of impacted fecal matter decaying in the colon. Symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, intolerance, lack of endurance and frequent illness are all signs of autointoxication. The stress of today’s lifestyles and diets requires the body to function at peak capacity. In order to do this, the body requires optimal nutrition. Sadly, our diets do not support the type of lives we lead. Processed food, although cheap and easy, is nutritionally void and leaves the body in a state of perpetual want. Our stomach is full, but there is not enough nutrition in what was just eaten to get the body through the rest of the day. No wonder we crave sugars for energy and salt for proper electrolyte balance and absorption. The body is trying to tell us something.

Sustainable growing and harvesting of this wild Rainforest fruit is contributing to the sustainable development of the Amazon River basin helping the natives maintain their traditional ways of life and keeping the rainforest alive and thriving for future generations. A leading responsible advocate for CamuCamu is the Amazon Herb Company which offers the fruit in liquid, powder and skin care products. For more information contact Amazon Herb Shop at 1-800-239-5859 HB

Unfortunately that afternoon snack is usually just more empty calories and chemicals. Since we are not eating enough raw, unprocessed food, the body is not only deficient in nutrients, but the colon does not receive enough fiber and liquid to move matter efficiently and this is a recipe for constipation. A constipated bowel is a breeding ground for unhealthy bacteria, which can easily multiply and eventually over run friendly bacteria creating an imbalance in the gut. The thick mucoid lining of the colon becomes compromised and the blood capillaries to the colon begin pulling toxins into the blood stream and voila – autointoxication!

nations, yet during a Colon Hydrotherapy session they witness a dark, rock-like stool (impacted matter) moving through the waste tube. As the water softens and loosens decaying matter impacted in the bowel, abdominal bodywork helps to stimulate peristalsis in the colon and encourage the body to cast off that which it had previously been holding on to. In normally functioning alimentary tracts (the system between your mouth and anus), enzymes in saliva signal the colon to evacuate its contents in preparation for the incoming food, which means, that if you are functioning properly you will have a bowel movement within an hour or two of each meal. Therefore, if you are eating three meals a day, you should be having three healthy bowel movements a day! A healthy bowel movement is when peristaltic action produces the urge to eliminate, and the evacuation produces a long, formed stool of medium brown color. Having to force the elimination to come, feeling that the elimination is incomplete and/or hard, dry looking stools are all signs of constipation. Slower transit times can be the result of many factors, but some of the major ones are; dehydration, poor diet, stress, medications, poor bowel habits (denying the urge to eliminate) and electrolyte imbalance, which leads to mal absorption. A series of colonic irrigations done within days of each other to prevent re-dehydration will thoroughly soak and saturate impacted fecal matter so that it can be dissolved and removed effectively and comfortably. One Colon Hydrotherapy session can be equivalent to having 20 normal bowel movements and following a session many people report a sense of “lightness,” renewed vitality and an increased sense of well-being. Constipation is of epidemic proportions in the United States, as evidenced by the million dollar laxative industry. Most people are not even aware that their bowels are irregular, even though the body sends signals that things are going awry, such as constipation, acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, uncontrollable cravings and persistent weight gain. In 2010 colon cancer was the third most diagnosed cancer in the nation, with over 102,000 new cases diagnosed. Past generations, throughout the world, have used the state of the bowels to determine overall health of the body. With the rebirth of February 2010

Peripheral Neuropathy Written By Kim McIntire Certified Rolf® Practitioner and Massage Therapist You may be wondering what that numb, buzzing sensation is in your toes when you put on your favorite “going out” shoes, or ski boots. It can be a compression of nerves in the foot from You don’t have improperly fitting shoes or possibly an inflamed nerve from a past injury. That sensation is one of the feelings that a person with peripheral neuropathy has every day, with or without shoes or socks. It is estimated that 20 million Americans suffer from peripheral neuropathy. In 1999, annual costs to Medicare exceeded 3.5 billion. Peripheral Neuropathy affects the motor, sensory and autonomic nerves that connect the spinal cord to the rest of the body. Symptoms can include numbness, tingling, weakness and pain. There are many known causes including diabetes, nutritional imbalances, autoimmune disorders and direct impact to the affected nerve. Approximately 30 percent of peripheral neuropathy has an unknown origin. With direct compression, structural misalignment or repetitive stress, impingements of the peripheral nerve may not be known about for many years until symptoms begin showing. With the loss of sensation, a person must change the way they move and work, in order to compensate for the lack of coordination. If the medial cutaneous nerve of the foot is impinged, it may feel as though you are wearing a sock even with no sock on. Due to the proximity of the medial cutaneous nerve to the surface of the skin, any compression (i.e. sock or shoe) will cause pain. This pain may not be limited to the immediate area but may travel the length of the nerve. In this

February 2010

case this nerve was once part of the sciatic nerve and if the pain is treated at the lower back and pelvis then the root cause of the pain or weakness will not have been addressed. Because of the loss of sensation in the foot, a person may feel unbalanced or uncoordinated and begin changing their gait to compensate for the lack of sensation. Widening their stance in an effort to maintain balance to live in pain! will bring about other problems through the body, which in turn will cause more pain elsewhere. If the peripheral neuropathy is caused by a compression of the nerve from repetitive stress, old injury or structural imbalance, then neural mobilization may not only bring about relief but may also help bring the body back into balance. When combining neural mobilization with Rolfing® (to help align and educate the patient) and Pilates (to strengthen the core and learn control and body awareness), success and pain relief comes quickly. Some patients are told that they will have to live with the pain or that it is all in their head. This is simply not true. It does take a knowledgeable practitioner and work on the patient’s part. Diet, nutrition and proper movement and exercise, along with awareness, is important for any healing process. HB

What Is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is both an art and a science, practiced by physicians who are trained to understand and use principles of naturopathy to maintain or restore optimal health in their patients. These principles are taught in unique medical schools with methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. As all medical professions have embraced modern tools and “Natural methods of treatment are the most effective and appropriate, but avoiding disease and injury are always the wisest course”. procedures, naturopathic medicine extends into modern clinical sciences, devices and technologies. Naturopathy today is not limited to certain modalities and medicines, any more than other professions are limited to the resources of centuries past. Naturopathic physicians apply six ancient principles to each patient’s unique condition. While other philosophies of health and heal I. The physician trusts in the body’s inherent wisdom to heal itself, and knows that the healing process is ordered and intelligent. The physician facilitates healing by removing obstacles to health and by supporting the needed nutrition and elimination to restore balance. III. Identify and Treat the Cause: Tolle Causam Illness does not occur without cause. Symptoms are not the cause of disease, they are its indicators. Symptoms, therefore, must not be suppressed by treatment. They may be relieved to assist comfort, but restoring health requires treatment of the underlying cause. IV. Heal the Whole Person: Tolle Totum Complete health includes physical, emotional, mental, environmental, spiritual, and many other complex factors. Achieving personal health goals will build success into the future of both doctor and patient. V. The Physician as Teacher: Docere The physician educates and encourages people to take responsibility for their own health. Teaching the principles for a healthy life is definitive for a doctor of any medical philosophy. VI. Prevention: Preoccupo est optimus A system of health care must first prevent or avoid disease and injury. Natural methods of treatment are the most effective and appropriate, but avoiding disease and injury are always the wisest course. What Treatments Do Naturopathic Physicians Use? • Herbal and Homeopathic medicines • Clinical nutrition and dietary modifications • Indigenous medical arts of China, India, old Europe, and early America when clinically sound • Physical medicine such as massage, manipulation, body work, exercise and hydrotherapy • Counseling, Guidance, Grieving support • Managing or transitioning pharmaceutical use Where to Access Modern Naturopathic Medicine Presently there are 16 states, two territories and four Canadian provinces that license naturopathic medicine in some form. Nevada currently does not license naturopathic physicians. The Board of Homeopathic Medical Examiners is proposing legislation to more accurately describe modern natural medicine, however. ebruary is a special month, with one of my favorite holidays: Valentine’s Day! I remember spending a lot of Valentine’s Days with my dad. Even though I’m older now, he still sends me candies and a small gift each year. I also like Written By Ariana Purcell the idea of spending time with my loved ones, but this year is going to be a little different…a Valentine’s Day with 7th grade drama! With best friends changing 24/7 and back-stabbing, arguing drama…add in 7th grade relationships and it becomes a mess. With spring around the corner, new relationships seem to blossom or shrivel, every week. I have already witnessed several relationships begin and end, and then the same people end up in a new relationship two days later. Both the girls and guys make a big deal out of it. As if their world is crumbling around them. A lot of them are not going to celebrate Valentine’s Day because of it. To me, it doesn’t make sense. We’re only in 7th grade. Just because someone breaks up with you, it’s not the end of the world. With my school dance coming up, it’s getting even crazier. But even with new date jealousy, break-ups and general drama, my friends are still planning on going to the dance, with or without a date. Which is my point exactly, who needs a date? We don’t need a guy (or girl) to go to some dance. My friends and I will go as best friends and that sounds great to me! HB

Kayaking through Siberia, Part 2 My departure was delayed, waiting for the arrival of a sail I had ordered from the kayak manufacturer in Germany. By the time I finally took off, it was almost October. Too late, much too late in the season for such a dangerous venture! Strong winds pounded me heavily and whipped up treacherous swells. Water got into the boat. By the third day, I had developed severe sciatica. My response to the pain most likely saved my life for I turned around long before I reached the open sea, which most likely would have become my grave. What would my experience be in Siberia now? I traveled on, with anticipation and excitement, to Frankfurt and further to Yekaterinburg in the Ural Mountains, my new, one-seat foldable kayak in my luggage. My guardian angel Vladimir had seen to it that I was picked up at the airport by a friend. After feeding me breakfast and showing me the historic site where the last czar and his family were shot, he took me to the railroad station. A day and a half of travel by train and I arrived in Krasnoyarsk one hour after midnight. Would you believe Vladimir and his chauffeur were there at this “ungodly” hour to pick me up in a large, city-owned Volga to take me to a hotel? How did I get into this situation of being treated like royalty? I had met Vladimir on my bike ride across Siberia in the year 2000. By the time I had reached Krasnoyarsk on a gloomy, rainy day, three spokes had broken on the rear wheel of my bicycle. Though I carried spare spokes along, if this happened on the side of the chain, without proper tools, I could not fix it. To be continued… With joyful passion for peace and health, Hans, The Healthy Adventurer. HB

“HB Magazine is a great source for everyday healthy living. The first time I opened HB, I found something I could use to make my daily life healthier. Just last month, I learned about posture (I have since taped the article to my desk). I really enjoy reading a magazine that doesn’t tell me how I need to buy more expensive clothes, wear more makeup and be very skinny. HB allows me to open a magazine and learn how to feel better about myself! To top it off, HB is local-and I love that!”

ASTROLOGY&HEALTH

All Health is Holistic Health

Chiron Files Is Our Obsession with Relationships Healthy?

Written By Eric Francis

F

ebruary, time for the annual cult of romance known as Valentine’s Day. It’s just about time for all the coupled people to buy chocolate and flowers and diamonds, and pump the romance of their love affairs; and time for all the uncoupled people to unabashedly ramp up their search for the special relationship; or to sit home woefully dreaming of what might someday be or what one day was. With each passing year, Valentine’s Day competes with Christmas and Halloween for the “most money spent” award. Many single people feel left out; for some it’s a sad day. Have you ever questioned whether this approach to relationships--that is, to romance--is healthy? As an astrologer who has discussed relationships with nearly every client who has come to me, I propose it’s time to ask. Valentine’s Day mania is just an example of the many ways our society is oriented around “coupledom,” from benefits in the tax code to one of the biggest civil rights issues of our day, being the right of lesbian and gay people to marry. What is interesting is the extent to which this meme of pair bonding is presented as the only legitimate relationship option. If you’re not in a relationship, some odd rule somewhere says you have to be in one; there’s a kind of mandatory search for the “special someone.”

Does anyone remember that line from Fear of Flying, in which Erica Jong says she wants to be a whole person instead of half a couple? The astrology of 2011 is all about being a whole person. Astrology or not, the moment we’re in is calling on us to be a whole person, in harmony with our own energy. We talk a lot about being in integrity; that means whole and integrated. The astrology of our moment strongly favors whole personhood. In fact, if not for the devoted resistance to the concept that seems to be such a part of the dualistic human experience, I would say it’s all but inevitable. This is illustrated several different ways. First, Saturn in Libra is peeling back the facade from our relationships. The standard narrative (the nuclear family, monogamy is the only way; if you’re single, you’re weird) is wearing thin under the compelling energy of Saturn; astrology that is urging us to get real. Part of real is about making sure we are emotionally self-sufficient; part of real is about conducting our relationships on adult terms. One thing our society does is romanticize relationships; as if once you have one, you’ll always be on a Caribbean vacation. Saturn in Libra is saying we need to be more practical from the outset. Yes we need passion, yes we need to dream, and yes, we need to treat our relationships like real-world entities that require a strong sense of purpose and regular maintenance. One of the most challenging things about relationships is that they rarely acknowledge the individuality of the people involved--that the people in the relationship are whole people and not half a couple. Uranus entering Aries this month is likely

to stir up a tempest of the desire to be an individual. That may put a strain on some relationships that are not accustomed to this state of being; one thing we may learn is that our structures are too brittle and need to be more flexible. Chiron is about to enter Pisces for the next eight years, drawing us deep into our unconscious, helping us become aware of our motives, and what we need to resolve emotionally. We have a lot to learn about this; there is a deep need for emotional healing. I suggest that partners recognize that everyone has different emotional healing needs, and your primary relationship is not the only place you may need to get those needs met. Many people recognize their need to be more independent, but are afraid to do anything about it. Despite all they do with others, and seek from others, their deeper nature is calling on them to stand on their own feet. You may be one of those people, and if you are, I suggest you follow your instincts and take action that will help you get strong in the ways you need to get strong. You can do it--and you will benefit greatly from doing so. It’s just that you may not find a lot of support around you--but this fits the description of being able to live your life without needing the constant approval of others, or being driven through life by the fear of abandonment. HB And this, I would evoke as the new spirit of Valentine’s Day. Eric Francis is the author of the Planet Waves column, available by subscription at PlanetWaves.net.
