Free Far Infrared Sauna Session with First Visit I’m a 55-year young woman on a journey back to health and this is my story. For the past 6 years I have been in and out of hospitals for various surgeries and I was sick all the time! On top of catching every illness that crossed my path, I had horrible back pain for as long as I can remember. The pain was getting so horrible that I could hardly move. I scheduled lower back surgery for June 2007. Before I had my back surgery I fell down and hurt my good shoulder. I still had severe back pain after my surgery and my shoulder started to get worse. I reluctantly went to my doctor to find out what I did to my shoulder. I was sure it would end up in another surgery. He diagnosed me with tendonitis and gave me a prescription for steroids. That was it... I’d had enough! Instead of getting the prescription, I called Janet at Circle of Life Spa… I wanted my life back!! I met with Janet and she explained to me that my body was full of toxins from all the surgeries and medications. She had me get in the floating tank and then the infrared sauna. I was so amazed at what one visit to Circle of Life did for my body – I wanted more! I got started on a weekly routine of mineral wraps, floating tank and infrared sauna sessions to detox my body. I’ve been detoxing for only 4 months but the results are incredible! I see changes in my body every day and so do others – I’ve had many people tell me that I glow! I’ve lost 27 pounds and all the pain in my body is gone!!!! You can’t put a price on good health and I’m so thankful for Circle of Life Spa for helping me to get my health back.

PUBLISHER LETTER

Dear Readers, Last month I could be found in a birthing room waiting the arrival of my first grandson. Alas, he did not come that day; he was born March 5th which just happens to be the birth day of Dr. Taylor Donovan. Welcome to this world, little Leuca; thank you for joining us. April is a busy month for Healthy Beginnings Magazine. You will find us at numerous community events. Leading off is the Banff Mountain Film Festival followed by the Nevada Women’s Expo, Tune into Kid’s Fair and last the Nevada Econet’s Earth Day celebration. Please check our Calendar of Events section for dates, location and time. As usual, we have much to be thankful for. HB Magazine would not be possible without our advertisers’ support, or without our loyal readers. Nearly everyday we hear from you, dear readers: expressing gratitude for Healthy Beginnings Magazine, a much-needed resource to our community; stating that this is your vehicle for finding natural and integrative health care providers. Whether you are a newcomer to Northern Nevada or a life long resident, the comments are the same. Please let our advertisers know that you found them in Healthy Beginnings Magazine. The HB team sends you all a huge, resoundingly happy and lovely spring wish.

A

sparagus bouquet! Vibrating with the force of spring – green, delectable and fresh, Asparagus officinalis Liliaceae, (garden asparagus) can grow up to 10 inches in 24 hours. Its arrival marks the beginning of spring in many cultures around the world, a seasonal delicacy from March through mid June, green, white or purple. Wild and domestic asparagus has been used as a food and medicine since very early times, for its diuretic properties, as a treatment for toothache and as an aphrodisiac. The roots and rhizomes are still used to treat urinary tract infections, kidney and bladder stones. Asparagus is nutrient dense: very high in folic acid and a good source of potassium, fiber, rutin, thiamine, vitamin B6, vitamins A and C, and cancer-fighting glutathione; however, the purine in asparagus can trigger gout in sensitive people. The sulfur-containing by-products of metabolism give urine a uniquely strange odor after you eat asparagus, but less than 50% of people are able to detect the smell because of genetics. Most of us don’t care anyway. All things considered, there are too many fabulous ways to enjoy spring asparagus!

INGREDIENT WATCH

Formaldehyde

What’s On The Label & What’s Not

By Lauren Birtwhistle

T

hinking back to your high school or college biology classes, you may recall the not-so-subtle fumes of formaldehyde lingering around the school’s laboratory. Aside from the foul stench, this chemical is capable of causing a lot more damage then you may realize. Why is this chemical so dangerous? Perhaps it is because of how often we come in contact with it in our every day lives. Formaldehyde is not just in labs. Here is a list of some of the most common products containing the chemical: • Pressed wood products • Carpets • Combustion appliances • Cigarettes • Clothing (to bind pigments, as a fire retardant, to create stiffness, water repelling and wrinkle resistance) • Grocery bags • Cosmetics • Paper products (paper cups, paper towels, napkins facial tissue) • Vaccines

Tired of working hard In this free 2 hour workshop, Jenn August, C.H. Success Coach & Hypnotherapist will teach you: • The #1 secret to making more money • How to stop struggling and start thriving • How to remove blocks to your success

Call 775-219-4901.

Reserve a seat for the 4/16/08 or 5/14/08 workshops.

and still struggling?

Come to “Make a Living Doing What You Love” Workshop

Spotting the chemical may be difficult. Pay attention to labels and do not just look for “formaldehyde”, but formaldehydereleasing preservatives. One of the most common names for a formaldehydereleasing preservative to look for is Quaternium-15. Other formaldehydereleasing preservatives include: • Bromonitropropane diol (Bronopol) • Diazolidinyl Urea (Germall II) • DMDM Hydantoin (Glydant) • Tris (Hydroxymethyl) Nitromethane (Tris Nitro) This colorless gas can take a toll on many different parts of the body. Effects can be caused by inhalation or contact with the chemical, even in low doses. Symptoms include irritated eyes and respiratory system, headaches, rashes, hives, dizziness, nausea, and chronic fatigue. Some less common symptoms of formaldehyde exposure are heart palpitations, ear infections, trouble sleeping, memory loss, trouble focusing, depression, weakness, migraines, abdominal pain, aching joints and muscles, and difficulty breathing.

April 2008

One of the biggest concerns and a very controversial topic is the use of formaldehyde in vaccines. Visit http:// www.informedchoice.info/cocktail.html for a list of common vaccines and their ingredients. You may be surprised at how many list formaldehyde as an ingredient. According to Hauptmann et al, in the American Journal of Epidemiology, “Concerns about the presence of formaldehyde are based on its toxicological profile and suggestions that it may act as a carcinogen. Although industrial exposure to formaldehyde may be associated with certain cancers, cancer risk has not been fully established and may relate to degree of exposure.” There is conflicting information about formaldehyde all across the internet. But with a chemical that is so common in consumer goods, any questioning leaves room for concern. PROVIDER

PROFILE

Tonda Adams, JD,CCHT By Sara Piccola empowering the person to eliminate the phobia. It’s similar to deleting an old computer program.

I

f you’re suffering from a phobia, fear, addiction, self-esteem issue or other type of trauma, Tonda Adams might be the person for you. Tonda is a hypnotherapist. She focuses on empowerment and personal change using hypnosis and therapy as tools to get to the core of the problem. Adams is a Certified Master Hypnotherapist, a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, and a Certified Alchemical Hypnotherapist. Alchemical Hypnotherapy focuses on our inner guides and the balancing of archetypes. Tonda has been interested in hypnotherapy most of her life, getting her first taste of it as a psychological tool in a business class in college. She pursued a degree in accounting and eventually wound up in law school. Two years into law school, Tonda’s husband, an attorney, died of a sudden heart attack. Between finishing law school and managing the law firm she shared with her husband, Adams found herself unable to grieve for her loss. She sought counseling through conventional therapy, grief therapy, medications, but nothing worked. Finally she encountered hypnotherapy and found the experience so powerful and healing that she decided to become a certified hypnotherapist. She opened her practice, MtnQuest Hypnotherapy, in Reno, and has been practicing here for 7 years. Hypnosis expands your everyday consciousness so that you have greater awareness of past events, feelings, and hidden motives. There are four levels of hypnosis; light, medium, deep (or somnambulism), and very deep. Most hypnotherapy is done in a light or medium state. During light and medium states your awareness is heightened and you are able to converse easily with the therapist. A light state could be used on a specific phobia. Tonda takes the client back through the experience and reframes the situation, April 2008

9

Deep states are best used for direct suggestion. The client no longer converses with the therapist. Deep hypnosis may be used on a client who wants to quit smoking. Tonda begins by putting the client into a medium state where they are still able to communicate. Slowly the client enters a deep state of relaxation during which Tonda begins direct suggestions. Direct suggestions consist of sayings such as, “You are no longer a smoker,” and “Smoking is poisonous to your body.” A very deep state of hypnosis is used by doctors for performing surgery without anesthesia. The necessary level of hypnosis varies from client to client and their reasons for seeking therapy. To determine the appropriate level of hypnosis Tonda discusses concepts of the conscious and unconscious mind with clients, including their thoughts, beliefs, and expectations about hypnotherapy. Therapy begins shortly after. Interestingly, Tonda believes that we all function in trancelike states of mind everyday as we perform activities such as driving, working, and eating. We are essentially in an altered state much of the time. So it’s fairly easy to slip in and out of a trance, sometimes just by hearing the sound of someone’s voice. I really didn’t believe this until I found myself in Tonda’s office being lulled into a trance-like state as I listened to her talk. At one point I realized I had a whole page of notes and didn’t remember actually taking them! Tonda assured me that similar things happen with her clients, and I believe it! Tonda’s passion for hypnotherapy comes from a longstanding belief in empowerment. If you are dissatisfied with something in your life it takes motivation, desire, and willpower to change. Tonda has found that many people don’t believe they possess these abilities and therefore feel unable to overcome trauma and other obstacles. However, because she experienced empowerment in her own life through hypnotherapy, she is now dedicated to helping others experience the same thing. In addition to office therapy, Tonda creates therapeutic CD’s for use at home and on the road. She is in the process of creating a new product, “Healing Stories on CD” which are designed to directly contact the unconscious part of the mind. Find ad on page 51. www.HBMag.com

BRAIN

HEALTH

Balancing & Strengthening

YOUR BRAIN

I

n the past issue, you discovered what side of your brain was the strongest. This article will show you a few exercises to work on the specific sides of the brain, as well as working on both sides simultaneously.

How Your Brain Improves The most powerful brains are the ones where many parts of the brain are activated and communicating on a regular basis. So how do you achieve this? Exercise! Brain exercise, that is. You need to give all the different parts a workout so that they will join in the every day processing to make your brain smarter and stronger. The more you exercise the different parts of the brain, the more you get all the jets of your brain firing and contributing, creating a symphony of power!

Parts of the Brain There are two major parts to your brain, the right and left hemispheres. Some of us work with one side more than the other. And some of us only work in limited ways with one side. Getting both sides flexing and communicating from the surface down to deeper levels will power up your brain. Try each of these exercises today to grow your brain.

Right Brain Exercises Beginners: Trace and Draw 1. First throw out any notion of “I can’t draw.” No one has to see this. Just have fun! 2. Find something to trace such as your hand, a picture from a magazine, a coin, a bottle. 3. Trace the object.

April 2008

10

4. Draw in additional detail. Start with obvious major lines, then finer detail, and then finally shading. 5. Do this once a week to work out your right brain and be amazed how you progress! That’s your brain improving! Intermediate: Messy Free Sketching 1. Pick a simple subject like a coffee cup, a glass with water, a bottle, a pencil, whatever! 2. Start drawing lots of lines very quickly. 3. Keep your hand moving, going over and over lines darkening where you “get things right” and leaving behind lines that are off the mark. 4. Have a rhythm of continuous movement and drawing. 5. Start with major outlines. 6. Add large sections. 7. Add smaller sections. 8. Add smaller detail. 9. Keep your hand moving and sketching. 10. Add shading. 11. Then step back and enjoy your masterpiece. 12. If you have time, do a couple more. The more you do this the stronger you build your brain!

Left Brain Exercises Beginner: Crossword Puzzle 1. Do the crossword puzzle in your local newspaper. 2. Or check out Bestcrosswords.com for multiple printable or online crossword puzzles. 3. This deductive thinking exercise uses your brain’s logic synapses heavily. Do this with some frequency and feel your brain grow.

TIRED OF

LIVING IN PAIN? LOST YOUR ENTHUSIASM FOR LIFE?

Intermediate: Design a Crossword Puzzle This will use your deductive reasoning in reverse of how you use it when solving a crossword puzzle. This is a left brain workout. You’ll also get some right brain through designing the layout. 1. Pick an even number of words, say 10-20 words. You can use a theme or not. Try for variety of type of word (noun, verbs, adjectives, etc) as well as length of word. 2. Make up a clue for each word. Clues can be in the form of a missing word from a famous quote, “sounds like” word, place where you would find or do this word, or whatever system you want to use. Global warming is influenced by the build up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from human activity, primarily the burning of fossil fuels to provide the energy and services we use every day. We burn fossil fuels for electricity (from coal and gas) in our homes and businesses, our cars, flights and to create the food, clothes and other things we buy and consume every day.

90 percent less energy to make recycled paper and it prevents the loss of forests worldwide.

Carbon offsets enable individuals and businesses to reduce the CO2 emissions they are responsible for by offsetting, reducing or displacing the CO2 in another place, usually where it is more economical to do so. Carbon offsets typically include renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation projects. As more and more people are concerned about global warming and seeking to reduce their climate impact, carbon offsets, along with personal carbon reductions, play an important part in the solution to global warming.

Become an environmental activist. Help us to lobby for more renewable energy and a reduced dependence on fossil fuel energy sources. Buy carbon offsets for your home, car, and airline travel.

Buy organic foods as much as possible. Organic soils capture and store carbon dioxide at much higher levels than soils from conventional farms. If we grew all of our corn and soybeans organically, we’d remove 580 billion pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere! Choose energy efficient appliances when making new purchases. Look for the Energy Star label on new appliances to choose the most efficient models. Clean or replace filters on your furnace and air conditioner. Cleaning a dirty air filter can save 350 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Fly less or buy carbon offsets. For a family of 4, a round-trip transatlantic flight creates as much greenhouse gas as driving for a year. Consider buying carbon offsets for the flights you must make.

Cellulite & Galvanic Technology Does It Really Work?

By Christina Rosevear

T

he term cellulite began appearing in English language publications in the late 1960’s. The earliest reference was in Vogue magazine, “Like a swift migrating fish, the word cellulite has suddenly crossed the Atlantic.” In the medical literature, cellulite is often referred to as adiposis edematosa. More descriptive names for cellulite include orange peel syndrome, cottage cheese skin, the mattress phenomenon, and hail damage. It is defined as excess adipose or fat tissue and can be located anywhere on the body that contains excess subcutaneous fat. It is most commonly found on the thighs and buttocks and appears as an uneven, bumpy skin texture. It is estimated that 85% of women have cellulite, though the condition is rare in men. Note that cellulite is unrelated to cellulitis, an infection of the skin and its underlying connective tissue. Cellulite is harmless and is considered a normal body change associated with puberty, not a disease. Cellulite does not discriminate. People of all shapes, sizes, ages and races have it; even the under-weight are not exempt. Galvanic technology has been in use in spas and salons for over fifty years to energize the skin and give a fresh, glowing look. These treatments utilize gentle galvanic currents which are thought to isolate cellular energy and promote circulation. A third party, single-blind clinical study was done to test the effects of regulated, positive and negative galvanic currents on the reduction of cellulite. Twenty-seven women between the ages of 25 and 50 were enrolled in this eight-week clinical study; body weights were within 30% of ideal body mass index (i.e., within healthy body weight). Cellulite was treated using an instrumentally produced, galvanic current and a “shaping/ conducting gel.” The gel contained ingredients thought to promote the effectiveness of galvanic cellular stimulation and break down the fat in adipocytes. These included xanthine derivatives from Theobroma Cacao and plant extracts (flavonoids and saponosids) from Chrysanthellum indicum, which prevent the generation of cellular signals that turn off lipolysis (fat breakdown). Extract of Chrysanthellum indicum is also known to reduce edema and inflammation and thought to promote drainage and elimination of toxins. The galvanic treatment, consisting of cellulite massage for 5 minutes on each area of cellulite, was conducted twice weekly, 2 times per day. Clinical assessments were made, including determination of appearance, smoothness and overall cellulite condition. Baseline data were compared to assessments at end of the eight-week study period. Improvements were seen in all categories examined: 50% of participants exhibited an improvement in appearance; 35% showed a smoother skin surface, and 46% had an improvement in their overall cellulite condition. April 2008

14

Thigh diameter was also measured at baseline, 4 weeks and 8 weeks. Seventy-three percent of participants showed a reduction in thigh diameter. The subjects themselves reported a 23% improvement in cellulite appearance. In conclusion, this study showed that the use of galvanic treatment accompanied by use of the “shaping and conducting gel” delivered significant and measurable improvements in the skin condition known as cellulite. HE ALTH B R I E F Government Labs Try Non-animal Testing By Maggie Fox WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Government labs will start moving to non-animal methods such as cells and computer models to test chemicals, drugs and toxins for safety, officials said on Thursday. Such methods are faster, and are likely to be more accurate and far less expensive, the National Institutes of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency said. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Human Genome Research Institute, both part of the NIH, said they would work with the EPA to make sure the newer methods are more accurate before expanding the program. SUPPLEMENTS 101

SLEEP LIKE A BABY. Melatonin Supports Healthy Sleep & Provides Other Health Benefits By John Morgenthaler

I

f you have difficulty falling asleep, you might want to consider inducing sleep naturally by taking supplemental melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone produced in the brain by a pea-sized endocrine gland called the pineal gland. The pineal gland regulates our internal body clock and sleep cycle through the secretion of melatonin, the release of which is stimulated by darkness and inhibited by light.

How Does Melatonin Work? Melatonin levels are low during the day, peaking at about 2 AM in normal, healthy young people and about 3 AM in elderly people, then steadily decline to minimal levels by morning. The maximum

amount of melatonin released in the bloodstream of the elderly is only half of that in young adults, which is why many scientists and health professionals believe that melatonin levels are a good marker of aging and longevity. The delayed timing and decreased intensity of the melatonin pulse is a result of the aging process.

A Powerful Antioxidant Melatonin supports a lot more than normal sleep patterns and the ability to function and think clearly. Scientists have discovered that it’s a powerful antioxidant that helps protect us from infection, inflammation, and autoimmunity. Addition-

ally, many believe that suppression of melatonin by light at night – experienced by night-shift workers – is a possible risk factor for developing serious illness.

Inhibits Cancer A recently published paper in Neuroendocrinology Letters says that disruption of the circadian rhythms caused by over-exposure to light at night—because of both night work and as a personal choice and life style—has been associated with cancer in humans. An increased risk of breast and colon cancer in has also been reported in shift workers. Many studies also report that cancer growth was inhibited in laboratory animals that were treated with melatonin.

Melatonin Extends Longevity In other preclinical studies, melatonin has been shown to improve immunity and extend lifespan. In one study, middleaged animals were given melatonin each evening. The treated animals became healthier, and exhibited better posture, increased activity levels, more lustrous fur, and lived an average of 20% longer than the control animals. In a recent study, animals with leukemia that were treated

April 2008

16

www.HBMag.com

with melatonin had a survival rate of 3040% versus animals that were untreated and had a 0% survival rate.

The Importance of Sleep Scientists know that sleep is as important as food and air. The quantity and quality an individual gets is also extremely important. Six and one-half to seven hours of uninterrupted sleep seem to be the magic number for a lot of people.

How much should you take? The appropriate dose can vary enormously from person to person. Several intelligent melatonin users started by taking 2 mg at 11 p.m., and then adjusted the dose from there. If they found that they slept well but were drowsy in the morning, they cut the dose in half. If they found the dose had little or no sleep-inducing effect, they increased the dose by 1 mg each night until they got the desired effect. We have received reports from people who get good results with less than 1 mg, and others use it in the vicinity of 3 mg.

Precautions Timing may be crucial for the most effective use of melatonin. Individual differences in the absorption and metabolism of melatonin may account for the differences in effectiveness. When you take melatonin seems to be much more critical than when you take other supplements. One melatonin user reported that he gave himself terrible jet lag by absentmindedly taking melatonin at 3 a.m. after staying up late. He recovered from his error, resetting his circadian rhythm back to normal with melatonin at 10 p.m. the following evening, but not before he had to spend an entire day experiencing the lousy, dull “jet lag hangover.” Also, people with autoimmune disease should avoid taking melatonin, or do so only under close supervision. Additionally, to avoid compromising your body’s ability to make melatonin, it is advised that you take supplemental melatonin intermittently and/or on an occasional use basis.

Conclusion There’s a lot we know about melatonin supplementation and there’s a lot more for scientists to discover. We know that it can help with sleep and that it’s a potent antioxidant that is proving to be beneficial for numerous health problems including depression and cancer. It also shows great potential as an anti-aging supplement. Although you may find that you need to experiment with dosage, start out by taking the recommended dosage on the label before sleep. Whether you need help sleeping through the night or just want to boost your immunity and possibly add some years to your life, you can’t go wrong with melatonin.

Hummus or Humus… What’s the difference anyway? By Craig M. Witt

H

is eyes sparkled and he felt an anticipatory rush as the brand new, 1-ton 4 x 4, diesel truck pulled into the compost sales yard. The splash graphics across the side of the cab identified its owner as a new local addition to Northern Nevada’s landscaping “Professionals.” “Awesome!” he thought, “It’s a new customer.” The taller of the two Patagonia dressed men stood at the sales desk and said, “I’d like to pick up a truck load of hummus.” The sales person couldn’t help himself and replied, “And how many truck loads of pita chips would you like to go with that? That’s a whole lot of bean dip!” Hummus or humus... what’s the difference anyway? Quite simply put, the difference is all in the “m.” Use two m’s and it is pronounced humm-us; that is “hum,” like you are humming a song. Use one “m” and it is pronounced hu-mus; that is “hue” like a shade of a color. Got it?

Hummus is people food. Humus is soil food! When your soil is hungry, the best thing you can feed it is humus. The recipe for humus is a bit more complex. In the literature that exists on humus, its definition really comes from what it does, because no one is really sure of what it is. Paul Sachs devotes an entire chapter to humus in his book Edaphos: Dynamics of a Natural Soil System. He states,

“Humus like so many materials on earth is abundant, renewable and essential for life to exist on this planet. Humus is complex and even after hundreds of years of research, no one really knows what it is.” He goes on to say that, “Humus in the soil has more real value than money, real estate, stocks or bonds.” “Humus is an amazing soil conditioner.” Dr. William Jackson devotes almost 1,000 pages to humus in his book Organic Soil Conditioning. He states “Through digestion, disintegration, and transformation processes; humic substance molecules are manufactured, representing sun, energy impoundment.” WOW!! Humus really does have incredible properties. So what are they? • Humus provides energy for plant growth. • Humus increases the soils water holding capacity. • Humus holds soil nutrients thus making soils for fertile. • Humus breaks up compacted clay soils. • Humus holds sandy soils together. • Humus increases aeration of the soil. • Humus stimulates and feeds soil microorganisms. • Humus produces healthier, more abundant yields of crops. This past February there was a four day advanced workshop on soils. After 8 hours of discussion of the importance of humus, the attendees came to the following conclusions; the word “compost” is

April 2008

18

a verb. When organic matter is properly composted the END RESULT is HUMUS. High quality humus, when fed to soil is the root of all “Healthy Beginnings.” This means, the plants say ahhhhh, and so do we! Now, when you’re hungry after turning your compost pile, a great hummus recipe can be found in Sally Fallon’s cookbook, Nourishing Traditions. Here it is:

HUMMUS Makes 2 cups

2 cups basic chickpeas, cooked 3 cloves garlic, mashed ¼ cup tahini 1 Tablespoon expeller-expressed flax oil ½ cup fresh lemon juice Pinch of cayenne pepper Using a slotted spoon, place cooked chickpeas in food processor. Add remaining ingredients and proceed until smooth. The hummus should be creamy and not to thick. Add some of the cooking liquid if it needs thinning. Serve with vegetable sticks and pita chips. By the way, please pass the bean dip! References: 1. Sachs, Paul D. Edaphos: Dynamics of a Natural Soil System. Vermont. 1999 2. Jackson, PhD., William R. ORGANIC Soil Conditioning. Colorado. 1993 3. The Most Powerful Drug

Used By Mankind By Tonda Adams, JD, CCHT

“One great use of words is to hide our thoughts.” -Voltaire

W

ords can create a feeling of euphoria or can cause a feeling of devastation. They can bring a country together or to its knees. Words can even put you in a trance.

Words are cups that hold the emotion of what we are communicating. When we are angry, the words we use are filled with that emotion. Irritation is just a lesser emotion of anger.

One definition of the word, ‘word,’ is an articulate sound or symbol expressing an idea, but it is so much more, it is a pointer to an emotion attached to the word. What do you feel when you hear the words stupid…ignorant…jerk? How do your feelings change when you say words such as love… peace… joy…yumm…tasty?

Babies are the most sensitive to sound vibration. Although not capable of understanding the meaning of a word, they definitely absorb the energy/vibration conveyed by the word. They know instinctively when a sound/vibration is soothing, or irritating to the nervous system. They pick up the emotional energy from those around them.

Perhaps you are wondering what this all has to do with the most powerful drug?

Perhaps you have seen the video clip circulating around the Internet: a father sitting beside an infant in a highchair. The infant appears to be less than one year old.

Each word has a vibration of emotions that we react to. Our bodies are sensitive to all vibrations, realized or not. When someone says a harsh, loud or abrasive word, our body reacts by a tightening of the muscles, and if we feel threatened, epinephrine propels through our body causing the heart to race, shallow breathing and a chain of chemical reactions. The two most powerful words in our language are the words “I AM.” These words have caused more pain and suffering than any other words in our language. Of course, it is not the words that caused the pain and suffering, but the emotional meaning we have attached to the words that follow. How many times have you said or heard the words I AM sick… I AM tired… I AM angry… I AM disappointed… I AM Sad…I AM lonely… “I AM”… “I AM”… who is this “I AM” that is qualifying the words with the emotion and creating the feeling of sickness, fatigue, anger, disappointment? There is only one person who can say “I AM” and that is you. Changing the words to I feel sick or I feel tired is much different than saying I AM Sick or I AM tired. This way you can actually feel the sensation without becoming it. Simply reframing the words will help you become aware of how often you use these phrases and assist in the emotional shift. A child hears these statements thousands of times before adulthood. These words are decrees that have been used so often they are programmed in our unconscious mind and have become a part of our map of reality.

April 2008

19

Dad says “what does a cow say” and the baby says “Moooo”…father continues to ask what various animals say and baby responds in like manner and then finally he ask, “what does mommy say” and the infant becomes very animated, shakes it’s little finger and says firmly “NO! NO!” Yes we learn very quickly about the emotional meaning of words. Babies and animals are amazing little receptors. They pick up our vibrations before we do. In the book The Way of The Wizard, by Deepak Chopra, young Arthur was asked what charms, incantations, spells or special words gave Merlin his power. Arthur replying to questions about how Merlin’s spells worked, said, “When I was an infant, I remember Merlin saying, ‘Eat.’ When I was a little older, he said, ‘Walk,’ and if I stayed up too late he said, ‘Sleep.’ As far as I can tell I’ve been eating, walking and sleeping ever since, so those must have been the most potent spells, don’t you agree?” How often have you said or heard someone say: I AM happy… I AM prosperous… I AM courageous…I AM loved and loving…I AM intelligent…I AM capable…I AM successful. Probably, not as often as the opposite phrases. It seems as though we have somehow got it backwards. It takes diligent and consistent awareness to change the old programming, but it can be done.

Jungian Dreamwork Series:

The Persona By Andy Drymalski, EdD

I

n last month’s article we examined the ego, Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung’s term for the conscious mind. The ego gives us our subjective sense of identity, and is typically symbolized in dreams by the dreamer or by a vehicle that the dreamer is in. In this article we explore a component of the psyche closely associated with the ego which Jung called the persona. “Persona” is derived from the Latin word for mask. In the theater of ancient Greece and Rome actors would wear a mask to signify their character (e.g., parent, child, warrior, etc.). In Jungian psychology, persona refers to the role that people play in social settings and society at large. The persona is closely connected to the ego because the role that we play in any social situation tends to structure our conscious identity within that setting. For example, your behavior and demeanor during a formal meeting with your boss may be quite different from what you would display at a restaurant with your friends later that day. Like the skin, which functions as a protective boundary between the body’s internal organs and the outer world, the persona serves a similar function between our inner self (thoughts, emotions, instinctual impulses, etc.) and our outer relationships. Because we don’t want to

be an “open book” to everyone we encounter, we wear a “cover” -- our public face. In daily life our persona is reflected in our choice of clothing, makeup or hairstyle, the way we speak, our posture and general demeanor. Even the type of car we drive, where we live, and our community and organizational affiliations are aspects of our persona. In dreams, the persona is most often symbolized by the clothes we are wearing. A woman dreams: “My sister is looking very thin and designed this outfit–all white. She’s wearing several different layers, and it looks more ridiculous than fashionable. Since she gets defensive easily, I don’t know how to tell her that maybe she shouldn’t wear that.” Although the main character of this dream is the dreamer’s sister, the dream is commenting on the dreamer’s persona for, as a general rule, the other people in our dreams symbolize some aspect of our own personality. The focus of the dream is the woman’s multi-layered, white outfit. There is something about the outfit that makes her look ridiculous. The dream is not necessarily referring to her actual wardrobe--she probably doesn’t even own such an outfit--but it is giving her information about the way she presents herself to others. The dreamer’s own association to the dream was that it referred

April 2008

20

to her tendency to play the role of a “good girl.” This association fits with the color of the outfit, for white is a common symbol for purity and innocence. While the role/ persona of a good girl may have been appropriate for the dreamer when she was six years old, it is a poor fit for her as an adult. The multi-layered aspect of the outfit may reflect the fact that rather than discarding this outgrown persona when she was no longer a child, the dreamer has instead added to or embellished it over the years. No persona can do justice to the individuality of the person behind it. The persona is first and foremost a means of adaptation to social life, and because of this is shaped as much by collective social forces (peers, family, the media, etc.) as by the demands of the unfolding personality. The best that any person can hope to achieve is a conscious and reasonable compromise between the two. The healthy persona must be flexible and adaptable to the different roles we play in the course of a day, and the course of a lifetime. For example, the tough persona of a drill sergeant may be very effective in the training of soldiers, but highly ineffective if carried over to his relationships with his wife and children. The persona that is flexible and appropriately matched to a person’s unique gifts, abilities, interests, and phase of life, becomes an invaluable instrument of that individual’s ministry and vocation in life. A woman dreams: “I am in a used clothing store, sorting through the dresses to find one I like. I’m not having much luck.” Finding our place and role in life

On some occasions our persona is revealed less by the clothes we are wearing than by the clothes we aren’t wearing. Dreams of being naked–wholly or in part–are fairly common. They typically occur when we find ourselves in a role that we are not familiar with, such as when we must give a presentation to strangers, meet our new in-laws, or navigate our way through a new relationship. Such dreams reflect our struggle to find the proper balance between self-disclosure and self-protection. If you dream of being naked the night after you had too much to drink at the office Christmas party, the interpretation might be obvious. (Perhaps Justin Timberlake would call this a “persona malfunction.”) However, if you dream of being naked in front of a new person you are getting to know and like, the proper interpretation might be that you need to be more emotionally–not necessarily physically–intimate, or revealing, with that person. Paying attention to the life context within which your dreams occur can assist you in deciphering their message.

RAWJUVENATION

can be a difficult process. Following the path of our own destiny is sometimes challenging when social, familial, economic and other pressures come to bear. It can also be challenged by our own attachment to the status quo, a reluctance to take risks, or an unwillingness to expend effort. The roles that we assume in each phase of our life represent not only our individual contributions to society, but also important steps in the development of our personality. The woman in the dream above may need to ask herself in what way she may be trying to “live life on the cheap.” There is nothing wrong with buying and wearing used clothing; this is not the message of the dream. The problem is in trying to fit into a role, or maintain an established role, simply because it’s the easiest thing to do. The Self (the Jungian term for the center, or core, of the psyche) seeks the fullest development of the individual personality, and holds little regard for our protestations regarding personal cost/effort. This psychological truth is symbolized in dreams where we are given the opportunity to buy a certain outfit, but its price seems exorbitant. The difference between the asking price and what we think is an appropriate price is symbolic of the difference between the value placed on personal growth by the Self, and the value placed on it by the ego. Too often we pad the wallet of our ego and short-change our soul. The next time you dream of an outfit that is quite pricey but unique or special in some way, do yourself a favor, buy the outfit! Then, when you wake up, reflect on the outfit. What kind of person would wear that outfit? Explore what it would be like to be that person. This can be a transforming process.

all i need is the air

that i breathe… By Scott W. Albrecht, IAQS, AOS, CMI, NTP

S

top for a moment and consider all the stuff you’ve seen coming out of the exhaust pipes of semi-trucks and factories. Well, according to studies done by the EPA, “Indoor air pollution is up to 5 times worse than outdoor air.” According to the American College of Allergists, “50% of all illnesses are either caused or aggravated by polluted indoor air.” Sick Building Syndrome has been around for years. Ever since the energy crisis of the 70’s we have built our homes and offices as air-tight as possible to save energy and, in so doing, have adversely affected indoor air quality. According to the Wall Street Journal, “Carpeting, poorly ventilated fireplaces, mold, bacterial toxins, dust mites … an almost endless collection of highly allergenic products has invaded our homes and we have sealed them in with deadly precision.” Our homes have become a virtual incubator and breeding ground for dust, dust mites, bacteria, mold, mildew, odors, spores, pollen, pet dander, tobacco smoke, and many other harmful contaminants that fill the air that we breathe. And therefore, it should be no surprise that the U.S. House of Representatives calls indoor air pollution “… the number one environmental health problem in America today.” It follows when USA Today carried the following headline: The Mighty Dust Mite Can Make Us Miserable and Sick. Speaking of dust mites and their by-products, did you know that when you look through the window on a sunshiny day and see

dust floating, most of that dust is dead skin cells with dust mites “riding on it”? And, YOU are sucking IN this ‘stuff’ as you breathe. A single ounce of dust (or dead skin) supports up to Forty-Two Thousand mites! Up to 12% or more of a pillow’s weight after 3 to 6 years could consist of dust mites, dust mite feces and dust mite carcasses. Wow! Well the point here is that dust mites are becoming a serious problem and people are being educated on this problem on a daily basis by the media. Still, the worst part – the reason most people do nothing about this problem – is because if they can’t see it, hear it, feel it of smell it, there IS no problem. Dust mites and their feces are a contributing source to some allergy and asthma attacks and can trigger ongoing allergy and asthma symptoms. All across the nation, people are now scrambling to find a solution to help reduce the dust mite populations from their homes. The good news is, that now there has emerged a new technology that actually helps reduce the dust mite’s food supply. How does it do this? Simply by reducing the mold and mildew that’s attached to dead skin which the dust mite eats. Reduce the dust mite’s food supply – you’ll reduce the dust mites. With the spring allergy season upon us, many people will go to their doctor who typically prescribes some sort of drug (or drugs) to treat respiApril 2008

ratory symptoms while the actual irritants and sources of the problem are ignored. However, expect to see an increasing number of air filter infomercials on the tube from now through early summer. From gadget-store and vacuum cleaner retailers to heating and air conditioning contractors and so many other spin-off businesses, marketers across the country realize that poor indoor air quality is a trend that’s here to stay. Even furnace and air conditioning manufacturers have finally warmed up to the problem and are adding electrostatic filter components to their systems. Unfortunately, just as with your cold air return filter, know that such filters function primarily to keep your heating and air conditioning units reasonably clean and easier to maintain – rather than significantly purify the air you breathe. In fact, when Googled, you’ll find more and more companies that have gotten on the air quality bandwagon. And should you begin such a search, note that there is a significant difference between an air filter or electrostatic precipitator with “passive technology” and an actual air purifier with “active technology”. What is Passive? What is Active? Passive technologies require a relatively small amount of the total air and pollution in a room to come to it and be collected. Active technologies go out into the entire air space dropping the dust from the air, neutralizing

www.HBMag.com

odors at their source and killing germs and pathogens in the air and on surfaces, thus “purifying” the indoor environment. When it comes to filters, the High-Efficiency Particulate Air filter or HEPA is the gold standard. HEPA filters are very efficient in the filtering of air that passes through the filter and they can filter down to 0.3 microns. Paradoxically, more than 97% of typical household particulate is smaller than .5 microns and may pass right through a HEPA. In fact, very small particulate is NOT effectively transported by air movement. So an air filter may be great at collecting “rocks and bowling balls,” but filters and plates have no real chance of removing the dangerous submicron particles. It is these submicron particles that are the real health threat. For the general health of your family, take some action to try and control the quality of your indoor air at home as well as at the office. But be careful. An “anything is better than nothing” attitude may get you nowhere. Rather, Caveat emptor. (Let the buyer beware!) Just because the package on the store shelf or product website claims to reduce dust by 99%, don’t accept such a claim on face value. Seek specifics. How much air is 99% clean? All the air in the room or house? Or only the air that passes through the unit? If the product makes a broad claim like: “All germs are killed” or “odors are eliminated,” don’t be “suckered.” Before you invest, call the manufacturer or sales representative and insist on seeing independent, peer-reviewed and published scientific validation to claims about a given air filter’s effectiveness. That kind of real proof is hard to come by, but it does exist with credible companies. And when you get it - read it. Lastly, ask whomever you buy an air purifier from if they will let you TRY if for several days RISK FREE. Ask them exactly how to set the dials, and do make certain that YOU read the operating instructions. Air purifiers like snowflakes are different. YOU make the choice that suits your particular needs. Especially with air purifiers, it’s just common sense to try a machine BEFORE you buy it. If you find a company that will loan you one to see if it “works on your problems,” of course TRY it. Amazingly, many are still asking: “Is Indoor Air Pollution really a serious problem and is breathing clean air really all that important?” Well, stop and think about this for a moment. You can live for approximately 1 week without water, 5 weeks without food, but if you stop breathing for only 4 minutes – you’re dead. Doesn’t it make sense to breathe the cleanest air possible? Of course it does! Remember, if you don’t have an air purification system, you and your family ARE the air purification system.

Artichoke,

A Liver-Healthy Vegetable By Bill Nickerson

The artichoke (Cynara scolymus), is as old as human civilization itself; artichokes were cultivated by the ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. It is native to the Mediterranean region, an area of the world with one of the lowest rates of chronic disease and one of the highest life expectancies. It is a perennial in the thistle group of the sunflower (Compositae) family. The "vegetable" that we eat is actually the plant's flower bud. If allowed to flower, the plant will produce a beautiful blossom of violet-blue color. Here in the United States, chances are the artichoke you bring home from the market was grown in California. Nearly 100% of all artichokes grown commercially in the United States are grown in California and 80% of those in and around the town of Castroville, in Monterey County, making it the artichoke "heart" of the world. Despite it’s long history, if you consider the lowly artichoke nestled in its market display and shielded by it's thorny exterior, it's ultimate value may not be

immediately obvious. In this era of fast food, the artichoke remains defiant–it offers no concessions to those who want a quick meal. It requires time to prepare and time to eat, petal by petal, until at last you reach the delectable heart inside. But even though it looks more like a hand grenade than a vegetable, it would be a mistake to ignore the many health benefits that artichoke has to offer. In a 2004 study conducted by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture of 100 common foods found in U.S. markets, it was determined that cooked artichoke had an extremely high oxygen radical absorbance capacity, compared to other vegetables; it’s total antioxidant capacity was surpassed only by dried pinto and kidney beans. This is important because artichoke can help to eliminate free radicals from the body, thereby reducing the oxidative stress that has been associated with the development of many chronic and degenerative diseases, including cancer, heart disease and neural degeneration. In addition to being a powerful antioxidant, the artichoke is also a choleretic, i.e., it helps to stimulate the production of bile by the liver. Artichokes also act as hepato-protectors; protecting liver April 2008

24

cells from damage that can occur as they process toxins in the body. A 2003 study tested four commercially prepared whole artichoke extracts and confirmed that, when properly prepared and constituted and with the correct dosage, artichoke extract clearly demonstrated these beneficial effects on the liver. Contraindications for the use of artichoke would include any form of bile duct blockage or obstruction and those with gallstones should seek the advice of their physician. People with an allergy to plants of the Asteraceae family should avoid artichoke; contact with the leaves or the plant itself may cause dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Fortunately, those who are able to consume artichokes can enjoy them in many ways, not only petal by petal. The benefits of artichoke may also be enjoyed in the form of a liquid extract, enabling you to drink your “artichoke a day”. References: 1. Range of Motion, Range of Emotion You thank God for the good in your life but don’t thank Him for the bad. That is where you go wrong. –Sri Ramana Maharshi

“Your guidance is helping me master multiple areas of my life... The Seven Keys to Self Actualization is like working toward my next black belt degree. I consider it an important investment in my life.”

If you are anything like me you prefer it when things are easy and comfortable. I’ve really had to learn to thank challenge and discomfort for all the goodness that they provide. Challenge opens me up to the changes that I really need to make, to continue the process of growth unique to my experience. It’s easy to become entrapped in craving convenience and shunning inconvenience. Become revolutionary and learn to love what’s uncomfortable. You’ll be surprised by what ends up happening. In my work with patients I actively encourage the paralleling between creating increased range of motion in the body and an increased range of emotion in feelings. It’s like manifest destiny all over again in a body that may have tightened up from trauma or postural constrictions. If you release one area of your life, you’re that much closer to releasing other areas. A radio receiver works by tuning to a specific frequency and picking up messages traveling within that bandwidth. Many of us have our awareness attuned to a few specific channels, while there exists a whole varied realm we rarely visit. I’m here to encourage you to get out of what’s normal for you. After all, it’s the diversity in our experience rather than the predictability of our comfort that keeps us engaged in our lives. Open up, receive, and feel free to feel free – sometimes that means changing your station. Take stock in the truth that life is motion. Life is motion, water is the messenger, and the air we breathe is our connection to Spirit. This is the basic triad to sustaining our life needs; all you need to do is add a little “sugar.” Attend to the basics by cultivating your joy around these things. Awaken and nurture your joy and help others to do the same thing – your joy and the joy of others really aren’t that separate anyway.

QUESTIONS OF SPIRITUALITY

Universal Laws for personal & professional success By Dale Halaway

F

or some, success comes easily and for others it is difficult. Some have found the success they were looking for and then proceeded to consciously (or unconsciously) sabotage it. The truth is, success is available to us all and we all deserve to have an abundance of it. It can be mastered by those who choose to live their life in alignment with Universal Law - a network of higher ground principles which point the way to a life of harmony, authenticity and simplicity.

When we consciously use these higher ground principles in our life, we can transform and accomplish anything (as long as we are not imposing our will upon others.) For these are the laws that govern our personal and professional success or failure, depending on how we choose to use them. We live in a Universe of Law and Order. These are definite laws that apply to every activity in life... the unseen forces that make or break every individual and or company. An individual is positive or negative, happy or miserable, rich or poor, depending on how effectively they work with the laws of their own nature.

These timeless laws are completely impersonal... Universal Law is here for us to use as we choose. The word “Universal” implies they are for everyone... applying to any and every situation in life. These laws are immutable. Whether we are aware of them or not, they operate 100% of the time - all the time - every time. The Law of Cause and Effect is just as real as the Law of Gravity. They include such laws as the Law of Discovery, Law of Manifestation, Law of Transformation, Law of Mental Equivalency, and the Law of Attraction. To better understand what causes success in our life, we will explore two principles in this article: The Law of Cause and Effect and The Law of Reflection. One of the multitude of ways in which the Law of Cause and Effect operates is that the energy we send out through our thoughts, words and deeds (known as cause), eventually returns to us in our everyday life experiences (known as effect). The Law of Reflection teaches us that our outer world (known as effect) is a direct reflection of our inner world (known as cause). We never see the cause; we only see the effect, which loudly affirms the nature of its cause. If our tendency has been to deal with the effects in our personal or professional life instead of seeking out and correcting the cause... then, the effect will simply repeat itself. It must. It is Universal Law. Whether our experience is one of reoccurring headaches or a repetitive pattern of high turnover in our business there is a cause - a reason as to why it is happening or it wouldn’t be happening. Every effect has its cause and every cause has its effect. In the case of healing a physical ailment like reoccurring headaches, we need to acknowledge that the aching feeling in the head is an effect - not a cause. If you want the headache to go away once and for all, you must identify and deal directly with the cause. Our attitude is a reflection of what’s going on within. A business that’s loaded with difficulties and hard times could be the effect of one’s negative thoughts, emotional imbalances, insecurities, lack of direction and goals, or negative control dynamics that are motivated by some inner fear (the cause). These effects are great teachers... for when we operate our lives on higher ground, we recognize pain and dysfunction as a signal that is telling us something isn’t working. Life is our greatest teacher and it teaches us, by cause and effect. Our life consistently mirrors back to us what is going on inside of us... be it positive or negative, this is the Law of Reflection.

What is Anti-Aging Medicine? By Mark Gunderson, MD

A

ge Management Medicine (AMM), or Anti-Aging Medicine, is a state of the art medical science whose goals are optimal health and restoring youthfulness in adult patients. The concept of Age Management Medicine began after a landmark study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1990. 12 adult males placed on human growth hormone were studied. The authors noted that the participants clinically looked 10 to 15 years younger following six months of therapy. Body composition improved. Bone mass increased. Fat mass diminished. Lean muscle mass increased. This gave physicians and scientists the first inkling that part of normal aging could be slowed and possibly reversed. Maybe aging can be treated like a disease model? Could or should aging be viewed as a treatable medical condition? The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M) was started in 1993 with 12 physicians and scientists. The lofty goal of A4M is to advance the science of aging and extend the human lifespan. It is the fastest growing new medical specialty with 15,000 members worldwide. It certifies doctors in the field of Age Management Medicine and is “dedicated to the advancement of therapeutics related to the science of longevity medicine.” Traditional medicine continues to be in a mode of fix-itwhen-its-broken approach. It has gotten lost in red tape. There is an over-reliance on drug treatment for everything. Hospitals, insurers, HMO’s, providers, and the drug industry have all gotten in the way of patients’ quest for health and quality of life. Advances in the basic sciences have primarily led to the conclusion that nearly all medical disease has inflammation as the common denominator. It is a process that causes blood vessels to constrict and blood clots to form. It is life saving in primitive man to help survive trauma, bleeding, infection, or injury. But inflammation is currently killing modern man. Modern man now is awash in inflammation. Poor diets contribute to inflammation. Lack of exercise leads to inflammation. Stress, depression, obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol, poor sleep, hormonal declines, and aging all contribute to inflammation. The food chain is awash in calories, bad fats, preservatives, and overly processed carbohydrates. The link between diet, inflammation, and chronic disease is clear. AMM is an ethical, state of the art medical science based on peer reviewed medical research. Patients’ concerns and quality of life issues are paramount. Fatigue, weight gain, osteoporosis, depression, loss of sexual performance, declining libido, muscle wasting, aches, brain fog, hot flashes, insomnia, anxiety, and diminishing quality of life are common complaints to

April 2008

27

physicians. Patients are tired of being told that these are normal symptoms of aging and that “all of your lab tests are normal.” AMM can improve inflammation by modifications in diet, exercise, reducing stress, improving body composition, and hormonal optimization. The goal of practitioners in AMM is to lower inflammation, improve health, and slow or reverse the progression of chronic disease -- all of which may make significant improvements in a patient’s quality of life, body composition and medical conditions. HEALTHY PETS

Successful

PET Adoption By Lauren Birtwhistle

W

hen you make the decision to adopt a pet, you not only save a life, you get a new best friend. Although a great decision, it should not be taken lightly. It is a major decision. Here are a few things to consider before adopting your new friend.

Why do I want a pet? Adopting a pet because your kids have been begging you every day for weeks is not a good reason to adopt. If you have children under six years old, you may want to consider waiting a few years before adding a new member to the family. Children should be old enough and mature enough to properly handle and help care for your new pet. Adopting a pet as a surprise or gift is never a good idea. A person should be well prepared and educated about their specific pet before bringing it into their home.

Can I afford a pet? The adoption fee is just the beginning. Although most shelters provide vaccinations before adoptions, as well as spaying and neutering, the cost of your pet’s care will continue throughout its lifetime. Annual veterinary visits, microchipping and allergy/flea control are still a small part. Remember the cost of food, toys, treats, collars and leashes, grooming supplies and possibly obedience classes. It adds up. Make sure you have the financial means to give your new pet what it deserves and needs for a happy and healthy life.

What kind of pet will fit my lifestyle? Before adopting that adorable puppy giving you the sweetest “adopt-me” look possible, consider what is best for you and your animal. Busy schedule? Con-

sider an animal that needs less attention like a cat, or an older dog. If you have limited space you may want to consider a bird. If you enjoy hiking and outdoor activities, an active dog would make a great companion. Make sure to research specific breeds and their tendencies before adopting. And know that nearly all species, including ferrets and horses, have rescue groups that will help you find the right animal for you.

Who else is in the home? If you have small children or other animals, you must make sure that the animal you are adopting is compatible. Most shelters will let you know if an animal is good with children or not. Often, you can bring in your other pets to a shelter and have them meet the potential new member of your family, before actually committing to the adoption.

Remember… This is not a temporary purchase. Adopting an animal is a major decision. Depending on the animal, you should be prepared to share your life with this animal for at least ten years or more. Be prepared for accidents in the house, soiled or torn furniture and unexpected medical emergencies. Adopting your pet should be a great experience that the whole family can participate in. Your new pet should be welcomed as a new family member and planned for and treated accordingly. April 2008

Make every day an Earth Day by building your very own compost bin. Use it as fertilizer to make your garden healthy and beautiful. Making Your Own Compost Bin Step 1: Choose a location. Make sure it is away from the main house, but close to a water supply. Step 2: Make a 4-5 foot long tube that is about 2 feet wide, out of chicken wire or snow fencing. Step 3: Bury the bottom of your tube at least one foot in the ground. This will keep animals from digging under and getting into it. Step 4: At the bottom of the tube, place a 6-inch base of twigs, brush and other small garden material to help air reach the bottom of your pile.

Step 5: Spread on another 4-6 inches of kitchen and garden refuse: leaves, grass or hedge clippings, egg shells, coffee grounds, tea bags, vegetable peelings, hay and fruit scraps. Anything green or brown. Step 6: Everyday, sprinkle the pile with water to wet it a little. Don’t use too much or flood it! Step 7: In a few days the pile should begin to get warmer. In cold weather you might even see steam rising from the pile. Mix or stir your compost pile frequently with a long stick. After about one year, the compost pile will be ready to use. You can tell it is ready when the mixture has cooled, turns dark brown and is crumbly. Now you’re ready to add the compost to your garden. Scatter it over the top and stir it deeply into the soil. Help the planet out some more and plant a bush or tree!

Levels of Acrylamide Chemicals – Natural News, Feb. 2008 A possibly carcinogenic chemical found in starchy foods cooked at high heat is found in high quantities in dried fruit, according to a new study conducted by researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and presented at a symposium on the chemical that took place in Boston. In the Swiss study, scientists found that acrylamide, a possible carcinogenic among humans, formed in dried fruit, particularly plums (prunes) and pears, even under relatively mild drying conditions. This was the first time acrylamide formation in food had been observed at temperatures significantly below the boiling point of water. April 2008

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

10 Unique & Healthy Ways to Say “I Love You” Why You Should Say it Now! By W.E. Lindsey

3. Take an afternoon off work to spend together. Take your daughter to the park, take your dad out for lunch and to a movie, take your husband to a football game (even if you hate the sport). 4. Find one of those ridiculous photos that people send in emails and print it off. Stick it in their wallet where they’ll be sure to see it, or place it in their briefcase, on their dashboard, their school lunch box.... Anywhere they’ll likely see it when you’re apart. Sign it with love. If you can’t find a funny photo, do a search for “funny animal photos” and you’ll be in business real quick.

L

ove may be a splendid thing, but how often do we share those warm fuzzy feelings with those around us? Especially when the relationship isn’t all that smooth or fresh? Romantic relationship or not, you likely have loverelationships with a variety of people. A spouse, a sister, a dad, a grandma, a daughter.... perhaps a friend you can’t imagine life without, maybe even your dog? Well, this top ten list doesn’t really cover the needs of canines, so hopefully you have a human interest you can shower with affection. One of the most common mistakes we make in relationships is failure to remind those we love how special they are. The best time to express this love isn’t on a birthday, it’s not at Christmas, not when you’ve had a few drinks and it feels more comfortable, and it’s certainly not something you should put off until one of you is sick or near death. The sentiment means so much more when it’s completely out of the blue. So, here are ten healthy, inexpensive, and anytime ways to express your love to someone of nearly any age or love-relationship:

1. Surprise them with their favorite dessert... homemade by you. Cut out a little paper heart from colored construction paper or card stock and write the words... “you’re special,” “wonderful friend,” or “happiness is you.” Then place the heart on or next to the desert plate. If you’re not one to bake, even better. Think about the sentiment... not so much the outcome of the special treat. 2. Write a poem... a silly one, a serious one, whatever you

wish... and make it personal so they know it’s just for and/or about them. Include fun things you’ve done together or inside jokes they’ll be sure to appreciate. April 2008

5. Clean their car or room, shovel their sidewalk, rake their leaves, mow their lawn, wash their windows or perform some other laborious task to show you care. Basically you’re giving them a break to do other things, or to do nothing at all. If it’s your wife... wash the dishes and do the laundry, even putting the clean dishes or clothes away in the proper place. Oh, does that ever say love or what? 6. Tell all your mutual friends and family how wonderful the

person is. Go on and on about how much they mean to you. It will get back to them!

7. Plant a tree or a bush and name it after them, even if it’s in your own yard. You could call it the Bruce Spruce or the Mable Maple... think of something catchy and fun. 8. If they have children, offer to baby-sit so they can get out

by themselves or schedule a date with their significant other. This is huge! If they don’t have kids, offer to do the same for their pets. I know it’s not quite the same, but maybe you could take their pooch for a walk?

9. Laugh at their jokes, even if they’re not all that funny. This is a compliment and will make you both feel good. If they’re not trying to be funny and laughter seems inappropriate, choose instead to smile whenever the conversation permits. Give your loved one every indication that your time together is a pure delight and means the world to you. 10. Just say it already! “I Love You” Come on, is it really that hard? Oh, and when you do... it’s essential you’re making eye contact. Remember... the key here is to perform these acts of love when your special someone is least expecting it. Give it a try and you’ll see how true the words “It’s the little things that count,” really are. www.HBMag.com

How do

You Want to be

FAMILY

Cared For? Choosing a Maternity Model of Care By Tiffany Hoffman, MS, ATC, LMT Birth is a very personal and powerful event in a woman’s life, and as such there is no one “right” way to give birth. There are currently two recognized Models of Maternity Care: the Medical Model and the Midwifery Model. Neither is exclusive to the care provider as there may be midwives who may subscribe to the medical model and physicians who prefer the midwifery model. These models apply to a philosophy of care, not necessarily a care provider.

D

o you believe that birth is a normal, healthy process that places trust in the abilities of the mother’s body, or do you believe it is a potentially dangerous undertaking that requires placing trust in modern technology? Do you want to have control of your healthcare decisions or do you prefer to place your care in the hands of a care provider? Do you feel that medication for pain relief is necessary during labor or do you believe that there are other natural ways to diminish the pain felt during labor? The answers to these questions will put you well on your way to determining the model of care and the healthcare provider that are best suited to your childbirth needs.

The Medical Model of Care sees birth essentially as an abnormal state that must be “managed” for the well being of the mother and the baby. A typical prenatal visit lasts anywhere from 6-15 minutes. The care provider is seen as the primary decision maker and “delivers” the baby. Interventions such as epidurals, episiotomies, and c-sections are much more likely and are sometimes desired by the mother. Women with preexisting health problems, e.g., diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, etc., may ultimately require this model of care because they are considered high risk. The Midwifery Model of Care sees birth as a normal, healthy physiological process that is a rite of passage rather than a medical event. It values the empowerment of the mother through education and truly informed consent and refusal. This model encourages the mother to April 2008

read and prepare for her birth – the more knowledgeable she is, the better. The childbearing woman is seen as the primary decision maker and she delivers the baby into awaiting hands. Care providers who subscribe to this model usually spend 30-60 minutes on prenatal visits to ensure adequate time for questions and education, addressing fears and family issues. Developing a trusting and nurturing relationship is a primary concern to this care provider.

A Typical Birth in Both Settings Midwifery Model (In this case, a homebirth)

You are laboring in various positions and/or in a tub, you have emotional and physical support, and you are wearing whatever you choose (or nothing at all). You can listen to your body and trust it to tell you which position is the best for your labor. You can eat light snacks for energy and you can surround yourself with as many or as few people as you wish. You can burn candles, light incense, dance, sing, moan or anything else you would like to do -- there really aren’t any hard and fast rules unless an emergency situation arises. Care is individualized and birth plans and family desires are honored to a large extent. There is no access to pain medications. Very few, if any, cervical checks will be done, unless you request them. If a desire for pain medication or a rare emergency situation

www.HBMag.com

arises, you will require a transfer to the hospital and the care of a doctor. Once the baby is born, he/she is placed on your chest for skin-to-skin contact and warming, and the umbilical cord is left intact until it is no longer pulsing, you discover the sex of your baby (if you don’t already know) rather than having it announced to you, and unless there is a need for further intervention, the baby stays with you until you decide otherwise. The newborn exam is done near you by the midwife while she educates you about your new baby. Breastfeeding begins anywhere from right away to sometime within the first hour. Barring any complications, you are left to sleep in your own bed with your baby after a couple of hours of observation. The midwife will visit you the next day to assess your health and the health of your baby, as well as to discuss your birth and your feelings about it. Postpartum visits usually occur at 5 days, 2 weeks, and 6 weeks.

Medical Model (A hospital birth) You change into a medical gown and are immediately given a cervical exam to determine dilation and effacement. You are then hooked up to a continuous fetal monitoring system and given an IV in case you need emergency procedures. You will most likely labor in bed and are left to labor with one or two people of your choice depending on the limits of hospital policy; you are checked on periodically by a nurse. Cervical checks are done several times in labor to determine your progress. You will be limited to only ice chips and water to ingest. There is almost immediate access to all that modern technology has to offer, including pain medication. There is very often a statistically based timeline (length of labor, time allowed after rupture of membranes, etc) that dictates the course of your birth rather than allowing your body to birth in its own time. After you give birth, the umbilical cord is immediately cut and the sex of your baby is announced to you. Most often the baby is taken to a waiting table to be assessed, warmed and cleaned up. If desired, the baby will be cared for while the mother rests. The baby will be required to spend several hours in a nursery to be observed with several other babies. Attempts at breast feeding may be initiated after the baby is cleaned, dressed and wrapped and you are cleaned up. You will be discharged after 24-48 hours after a vaginal birth and 48-96 hours after a cesarean section with any needed medications and an appointment to be seen in six weeks.

The Right To Choose In this country, and especially in Nevada, a woman’s right to choose not only her maternity care provider, but the place of her birth, is in jeopardy. In ten states midwifery is still considered illegal, even though most developed countries extensively use midwives for prenatal care, labor and delivery. In Nevada, midwifery is not regulated and therefore may cease to be an option in the future. As all women are different, the birth experience is just as individual. For some women, the technology, interventions and procedures of the hospital make them feel safer. For others, being at home, with few if any interventions, in a familiar environment feels safer. Not All Saunas

Are Created Equal By Peter Zulim

PART 1: General Considerations, Types of Heaters

I

n previous Healthy Beginnings Magazine issues, we have discussed the benefits of using a Far Infrared Sauna (FIR). So what about purchasing one for your home? One might think that all you do is go to your local sauna store and buy one. Sounds easy until you consider the details like, where am I going to place it, what kind of electrical outlet do I need, what features do I look for, and so forth. Buying a sauna can be a complex purchase given the cost and the physical logistics involved. Here is important information that will help you purchase your own FIR sauna. Saunas come in all different sizes and shapes, including different woods, types of heaters, electronics, and construction. The #1 consideration in purchasing a sauna should be to buy a sauna that advances your health. This means a sauna that does what it is supposed to do, i.e., it produces the correct micron of FIR energy and does not emit toxins from the materials used to construct it. You will also need to consider the size of the sauna and where you want to place it in your home or office. Other considerations are the controls, size and placement of heaters and benches and amenities, e.g., a stereo sound system or DVD player. The warranty and reputation of the manufacturer should also be considered. The heart and soul of your sauna are its heaters. There are essentially 4 types: carbon panel heaters, ceramic encased coils, metal rods, and ceramic rods coated with incoloy, a very stable base-metal protectant. Carbon panel heaters have an advantage over the other 3 types of heater because of their large size. This allows them to distribute the infrared heat more evenly, producing a softer heat that most closely resembles a warm sunny day. Some carbon panel heaters are merely carbon paper glued to a metal board and will peal away with extended use. Other saunas use

carbon placed in front of steel rod heaters. The most efficient design is a layer of carbon paste baked between two sections of a circuit board, with a thin copper wire up the length of each side of the heater. When completely baked, it is a solid panel rather than a multi-layered. Carbon is what conducts the electricity across the surface area of the panel, creating the FIR energy. A good carbon panel heater should not be hot enough to cause burns when touched by the body. These are the most complex heaters and cost more to manufacture. Ceramic encased coil heaters are much smaller than carbon panel heaters, producing much more heat per square inch of heating surface, making them much hotter than carbon panels. Ceramic heaters may cause burns if touched. They are often shielded by aluminum grates which also get hot enough to cause burns if touched. In addition, due to their size, the heat is much harsher; thus the time it takes for the sauna to heat up can be relatively longer than other heaters. These heaters are less expensive to make, keeping the price of the sauna a bit lower. Metal rod heaters are similar in design and construction to those in an electric oven. Whether they produce the correct micron of FIR energy is questionable since there has been no known testing of them. Some manufacturers spray-coat metal rods with a carbon-based substance supposed to increase the likelihood that the correct micron of FIR energy is produced. Metal rods do get hot enough to burn when touched and heat the sauna very quickly. This type of heater it is rather inexpensive to manufacture, which keeps the cost of the sauna down. Ceramic rods coated with incoloy appear similar to metal rod heaters but are much different. Incoloy is a metal alloy (a mixture of metals, e.g., copper, iron and

April 2008

36

other). The coating helps distribute the heat more evenly in conjunction with the heater housing (the metal box that holds the heater). This produces a somewhat softer heat than ceramic-encased heaters and the plain metal rods, but not as soft as carbon panel heaters. Incoloy heaters heat up quickly, and are often more expensive to manufacture than the other 3 heaters. Placement of heaters inside the sauna is very important. Being surrounded by as many heaters as possible is the goal. Most saunas have heaters on the front and back walls. Even more desirable is to have heaters on both side-walls and the floor. Floor heaters are important because a large amount of toxins are expelled through the feet when they are sufficiently warmed. Saunas without floor heaters are usually much cooler in the floor area. As the heat rises, cold air circulates in the bottom of the sauna. Side-wall heaters are a bonus because when you stretch out lengthwise, you can treat your spine and feet to FIR energy. The larger and wider carbon panel heaters distribute the heat safely and evenly. Other heaters tend to concentrate the FIR energy only in the small narrow area directly in front of the heater. Part 2 will cover types of wood and other construction issues, concerns about electromagnetic frequencies (EMF), warranties, dealers, manufacturers and good questions to get answers to before you buy. Universal Laws for personal & professional success Continued from page 26. If we’re working in an organization and we’ve been silently thinking of and resenting the fact that we are underpaid, not appreciated, and that we deserve more money and greater recognition, we are subconsciously severing our ties with that organization. The individual has set this law in motion and one day will experience the effects, which loudly affirms the nature of its cause and the operating manager/leader eventually says to this individual... “we have to let you go.” Actually, the individual let themselves go by their own repetitive pattern of self-sabotaging thoughts and negative feelings. It’s our dominant thoughts and feelings that influence the quality of our words and actions. This is what Ralph Waldo Emerson meant when he said, “The origin of every action is a thought.” Every so often, we pretend that we were the victim, we had nothing to do with it... it just happened. Success does not happen by accident and neither does failure. Things do not just happen, as many people in the past have thought; they come to pass and are a result of conscious or unconscious beliefs, intentions, motivations, choices and habitual patterns of thinking, feeling and speaking. The energy we send out returns to us in the form of our own life

experiences. In other words, whatever we habitually think, feel, say or do will eventually return to us in like manner. It’s the Boomerang Principle, “what goes around, does come around.” Wisdom is knowing in advance what the effect will be of a cause. Your thought patterns and feelings live in the inner world of cause and are the seeds for future deeds. The only thing that will move you to a higher place in life is the quality of your thoughts and feelings. Raise the quality and vibration of your thoughts and feelings today and you’ll change your life for the better tomorrow. When we consciously choose words and deeds that bring happiness and success to others, the fruit of our karma becomes happiness and success. Discipline yourself to think kind thoughts when thinking of others. Thinking kind and positive thoughts causes you to feel better about you and your world. Remember, you are creating your future experiences with your most repetitive “NOW” thoughts. Learning how to release the thoughts you don’t want to have manifest in your day to day reality, is the key. For more info call 775-825-1917. Find ad on page 26.

new concept in nutritional snack bars is showing up in health food stores, fitness centers and grocery stores. This new concept is that the bars have a 30 day date-stamped shelf life and contain no preservatives, ensuring you get the highest possible nutritional benefits. Plus, they are formulated for specific segments of the population. The bars contain a number of nutrients to fit a woman’s active lifestyle. Calcium, B vitamins, antioxidants A, C, and E are all added to supply a woman’s body with what it needs to stay healthy. For energy, organic brown rice syrup is added. It is a simple sugar that takes 2-3

hours to digest, providing the body with plenty of extra energy. Fiber is essential in maintaining a clean and healthy colon. These snack bars contain 50 grams of fiber each. The fiber is derived from rolled oats, milled flaxseed, nuts, and dried fruit. Milled flaxseed offers an extra nutritional benefit. It is rich in lignans and Omega-3 fatty acids, which recent studies are showing may benefit the heart and possess anti-cancer properties.

MEDITATION & REFLECTION

Calm Mind,

Happy Day By Ace Remas

W

hen you meditate with some determination each day, even for a few days, you will soon realize that the mind is not the brain. The brain is a physical organ, like the heart and lungs, with certain functions to perform. We can’t explain our experience of mind as having any physical qualities at all. We can’t touch it, weigh it, see it. Yet we know we have a mind, and we know it performs certain functions. Our thoughts, feelings and sensations arise from the mind. Our sense of self is conceived by mind. The principal function of meditation is to acquaint us with this mysteriously intangible object—our mind. As familiarity with its subtle qualities increases, we are better able to control those states of minds that determine our happiness or difficulties. Gradually we’ll come to realize that our happiness and contentment in life depend on the state of our mind and not on what we perceive to be external conditions. This realization is liberating because it is possible to control our mind. Try as hard as we can though, we cannot control the external world. Despite this fundamental understanding, we find it difficult to overcome the attachment to the idea that better conditions will bring us happiness. We crave external changes—such as a new partner, more money, a better job, recognition, companionship, possessions, and security—as the sources of happiness. We strive to attain these objects and conditions. But even success brings only short-lived happiness. Worry and fear of losing what has been attained often contaminates the happiness we might have achieved. On the other hand, failure to achieve these external conditions might even lead to depression, anger, frustration, and other negative states of mind. Yet despite the constant lessons of ordinary life, we remain convinced that better external conditions will produce the happiness we seek. This attachment to external conditions is caused by ignoring the formless quality of the mind. We wrestle with physical objects but what we are trying to subdue is the non-material, untouchable mind. Meditation teaches us to go directly to the source of all happiness, which also is the source of all our unhappiness—the mind. As we are able to develop concentration in meditation we experience more subtle states of mind. The more subtle this experience, the more calm the mind becomes. A calm mind is experienced as happiness. The pain, suffering, and discontent we live through is an agitated mind. By meditating we become familiar with calm states of mind, enjoy the experience and wish to repeat these experiences. With this motivation, we continue to gain familiarity with these happy states of mind. Gradually,

our wisdom increases and in our daily lives we begin to turn inward to a calm mind and refuse to become attached to or agitated by what is happening outside the mind. Over time, with meditation and the mindfulness to remember its lessons, we find ourselves happier, more satisfied, and with fewer problems. With fewer problems and a more balanced approach to the challenges of our lives we make fewer mistakes. The result is a happy life, even though no material action was required. How different is this approach to the way we normally face our life! And it is easy to do. It requires just a few minutes each day sitting quietly and reflecting on the truths of your existence. Here’s how to get started: After settling the mind by focusing on your breath for a short while, recall that the external world is not the source of happiness. You must turn inward, to the mind. You’ll feel resistance to this thought, even some fear that if you let go of your ordinary view something may go wrong. Conversely, you may feel some excitement that at last you have found relief from the causes of stress in your life. As your concentration increases, resolve to come back to the mind itself and not be drawn out by the temptations of your attachment or by the frustrations of your anger. Decide in meditation to renounce attachment and anger, to become a balanced individual, wise, compassionate, calm. Visualize yourself as having accomplished this, which will give rise to a positive feeling, a feeling of joy, purpose, attainment. Focus your concentration single-pointedly on this positive state of mind. Meditate on it without distraction as if your mind and this positive view have mixed together. Stay as long as you can. When finished, take a few moments before arising from your seat to dedicate yourself to recalling this positive feeling throughout the day. If you know challenging situations are going to occur in that day, such as meeting with the boss, a talk with your teenager, or facing traffic court, for example, make such an event a signpost to remind you about the inner quality of the mind. Keep a calm mind during the day, and you’ll experience a happy day.

Why Weight-Lifting is Vital to any

Weight-Loss Program By Christine Pinney Karkow

T

here are many reasons why people embark on a fitness program. The most common reason for many people, especially women, is the desire to lose weight, and/or “tone up.” When people say that they want to “tone up,” what they really mean is that they would like to change their body composition; to reduce body fat and develop nice, shapely muscles. The way to lose weight and/or body fat is simple: burn more calories than you take in. This is done through diet and exercise. This seems simple but many women fail to reach their goals of reducing body fat. There are several reasons for this. A large factor is that, for the most part, the “exercise” regimen entails only cardiovascular training, such as aerobics, stairmaster, elliptical and/or jogging. While these modes of exercise do burn calories, you will make much more progress towards a leaner body if you add 2 to 3 weighttraining sessions a week to your exercise program. This might seem counter-intuitive. Weight lifting to lose weight? Doesn’t adding muscle actually add weight? Muscle does weigh more than fat but it is much more dense than fat. One pound of muscle takes up only 1/5 as much space as one pound of fat. Thus, it is possible that you may not lose any pounds, but still lose inches. Ultimately, losing the inches and being more “compact” is your goal! By increasing your percentage of lean body mass (muscle) through weightlifting, your average resting metabolism increases because muscle is active tissue and burns more energy than fat. Muscle burns 6 calories per pound per day at rest vs. 2 calories per pound per day burned by adipose (fat) tissue.

Weight-lifting is an integral part of any “tone-up” plan; despite this fact, many women are reluctant to start a weight-lifting program for fear that it will result in them building “too much” muscle, looking “too muscular” or “too masculine.” The reality is that most women following a weight-lifting program will not ever put on the same amount of lean body mass as their male counterparts in the weight room because the levels of testosterone, the hormone responsible for adding muscle, are much lower in women than in men. Ranges of body types exist among men and women, some which have a higher propensity to add muscle than others. Some women (very few!) will add visible muscle mass, but will not end up looking like Ms. Olympia by doing resistance training 2 to 3 times a week. Add to this equation the factor of age; as one gets older, the body’s ability to add mass is reduced. However, significant gains in strength can be made at any age! You will find that by adding weight-lifting to a program of several aerobic sessions per week, along with a corresponding dietary program, you will achieve much better results in terms of reducing body fat and thus “toning up.” And don’t forget the other benefits of weight training – an increase in bone density and improved posture. in now and have placed all of our faith in some imagined future. Similarly, we’ve lost faith in our Self and have placed all our attention on the world outside. Now it is the world, it seems, that must “make us happy”—and herein lies the source of all of our misery. As long as you believe that it’s the world that must make you happy, you leave yourself open to great disappointment and much sadness. Why? Because as long as you refuse to see your inner potential for happiness now, you will not see it in the world. How can a mirror change the way you look? Think about that, for the world is only a mirror. You will only see in the world what you’re prepared to see in yourself—nothing more and nothing less. Know, therefore, that the journey to true happiness and to happiness now is not a journey of physical distance or time; it is one of personal “self-recovery,” where we remember and reconnect consciously to an inner potential for joy—a paradise lost—waiting to be found. One moment we look within and we see happiness nowhere; the next moment we look within and this time we see happiness now here. This is a revelation. This is enlightenment. This is joy! There’s a famous story from the Zen tradition that tells of an encounter between a young, eager student and a well-respected Zen master, noted especially for his perpetual grace and happiness:

Milking the Sacred Now The world has changed greatly in recent times in an effort to accommodate our desire for happiness now. Everything has speeded up. We live life fast—faster than ever. Fast technology, fast travel, fast careers, fast relationships, and fast results are all the rage in our “I want it now” world. Indeed, the world is fast becoming a vast convenience store where you can get everything in an instant—instant coffee, microwave foods, minutemeals, half-hour film developing, 24-hour banking, drive-thru funerals, quickie divorces, television shopping, home delivery of everything, and, of course, instant credit. We’re sold on signs that read “No lines,” “No need to wait,” “One stop,” “Open all hours” and “Buy now—pay later.”1 The problem with our “I want it now” society isn’t that we want happiness now, but that we’ve lost sight of how to experience it now. In particular, we say, “I want it now,” but we doubt and don’t really believe that “it is here now.” We’ve lost faith

“Master, I dream of everlasting happiness. What is the highest wisdom you can teach me?” asked the student. The master smiled. He took his brush and wrote, as if for the first time: “Attention.” “Wonderful,” said the student, “And what comes next after attention?” The master smiled. He took his brush and wrote, as if for the first time: “Attention. Attention.” “Yes,” nodded the student, utterly perplexed. “Anything more?” The master smiled. He took his brush and wrote, as if for the first time: “Attention. Attention. Attention.” “Okay, so what does ‘attention’ mean?” asked the student, unable to see. The master spoke: “Attention means attention.” “Is that all?” asked the student, obviously dispirited.

Every authentic school of wisdom and spirituality teaches you that now is the most abundant moment of your life. The bibles of the world, be it the Old Testament or the New, the Koran or the Bhagavad Gita, the Dhammapada or the Tao Te Ching—indeed, any true spiritual text—all agree that now is an eternal treasure chest dripping with beautiful, everlasting gifts of peace, happiness, love, and joy freely available to all on a 24-hour “Don’t pay now—don’t pay later” basis. Now is sacred! This is what the Zen master is trying to tell the eager young student in the story above. Indeed, talk to any spiritual teacher or guru worth their mantra, so to speak, and this person will tell you that now is always sacred. But why and how is now always sacred, you may ask? What if you’ve just been stood up on a date or you’ve just opened a bill or you’ve just chipped a tooth or your football team has lost again—how sacred is that?! The real secret to milking the sacred now is to place your attention not out in the world about you, but within yourself— your inner, unconditioned Self. In truth, the sacred now is an inner potential. It is eternal and abundant; and its geography is spiritual, not physical. In other words, the sacred now represents a permanent potential within you to experience love, freedom, and joy regardless of time, place, or circumstance.

SPICES HERBS &

SARSAPARILLA:

A Cowboy Spring Tonic

By Dr. Thomas S. Lee, NMD, APH

I

n 19th Century America, people used tonics, purgatives, and cleansers to treat not only themselves, but also their livestock and neighbors, to “eliminate poison from the blood and tissues, purify metabolic toxins left after a hard winter, and rehabilitate the body for the rest of the year.” These “medicines” were colorful and sometimes noxious remedies made from whatever plant, animal, and mineral products that were available. One of these —Sarsaparilla—is still popular today. Sarsaparilla, or Zarzaparilla, is the common name of a tonic beverage decocted from the roots of the Smilax medica plant. The Spanish roots of the common name are sarza for “bramble” and parilla for “little vine.” Most cowboy movies and TV shows from the 50s and 60s included “Sassparilla” on the saloon menu, along with rot-gut whiskey for wandering gunslingers and ranch hands. The two drinks have very opposite physical effects, so the next time you go to your saloon, knowing the herbal effects of sarsaparilla might make your choice easier.

Native to the jungles of Central America, the Smilax medica plant is a long green, thorny hardwood vine. Indian healers long ago found it surprisingly strengthening and energizing for those who brewed up the root and drank the extract.

Some History of the Tonic: American cowboys and ranchers in the 1800’s learned of sarsaparilla from the Indian and Spanish peoples they worked with. The herb had been brought to Europe in the 16th century much earlier by returning Spanish soldiers as a cure for syphilis. This of course was not true; but with the plant’s general strengthening and energizing benefits, sarsaparilla was a useful and beneficial treatment for a many conditions. In the mid-1800s in America, The patent medicine “quacks” claimed Sarsaparilla would improve everything that might ail a person. These were the M.D.’s of that era, known for their fondness for mercury, or “quicksilver” to cure anything and everything. Sarsaparilla was one of the relatively safer and effective patent remedies available. The bestselling brand of sarsaparilla was Ayer’s, which became famous through massive advertising in 1841 by James Cook Ayer, an MD from the University of Pennsylvania. He began compounding remedies in the back room of his drugstore in Lowell, Mass. By 1870, he was advertising Sarsaparilla in 1,900 newspapers and magazines. He filled hundreds of thousands of bottles daily, labeled them with paper from his own mills, and shipped them to the entire world on his own railroad.

The Connecticut State Agricultural Station, after analyzing Ayer’s medicinal sarsaparilla and eight others, found them to be “of a most complex composition, containing not only sarsaparilla, but yellow dock, stillingia, burdock, licorice, sassafras, mandrake, buckthorn, senna, black cohosh, pokeroot, wintergreen, cascara, sagrada, cinchona bark, prickly ash, glycerin, iodides of potassium and iron, and alcohol.” Although each of these ingredients has medicinal properties, the Journal of the American Medical Association argued that sarsaparilla was “so compounded as to be useless, though generally harmless.” Note, however, at the time, that endorsements for mercury and heroin as cure-alls were also being sold.

What’s in Sarsaparilla? The root of the Smilax medica plant contains biochemicals called saponins, which include phytosterols. Phyto means plant, and sterols are steroids in a plant or vegetable. Plant hormones are not identical to human hormones, but close enough so that the liver doesn’t have to work as hard to produce actual human hormones. Smilax sterols are close to human testosterone, progesterone, and estrogen. These hormones get depleted by many forces in stressful lives, and a plant sterol liquor, soup, or tea would feel like a tonic for anyone exhausted or injured. Smilax has been proven by herbalists and physicians to be an alterative, meaning a blood purifier, and an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body adapt to stressful conditions. Since our hormones affect every tissue and organ, a list of hormone-like effects supported by plant sterols would be a long one. You might read that “sarsaparilla is good for gout, rheumatism, colds, fevers, and catarrhal problems, flatulence, skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis, scrofula, ringworm, purifies the uro-genital tract, has tonic action on the sexual organs, and is said to excite the passions, making men more virile and

women more sensuous....” However, it should not be taken during pregnancy and lactation and should be avoided by men with prostate disorders, people with kidney disorders and those with sensitive stomachs.

OB/GY N Dr. Dennis delivers 98% of his own patients’ babies.

Specializing in: • alternatives to hysterectomy • pelvic pain • abnormal bleeding

How to Make It: The Sarsaparilla saloon beverage was distilled from the root of Smilax medica. Since ancient healers and local farmers were not technically able to distill alcohol, their decoctions involved boiling the roots for hours, and then mashing them and mixing the soup with a sweetener and an energizer like cayenne pepper or chilies. These additives were not only for taste. A sweetener would help the sterols be absorbed easily into the digestive system, and the pepper would increase the circulation in the membranes of the stomach and duodenum, helping the medicines be absorbed. Aztec stimulants of cacao were served as peppery aphrodisiac tonics for this same reason.

The Smilax root tastes bland and creamy. Make a mix like cocoa, mixing the powdered root and steeping it in hot non-scalded almond milk or rice milk for half an hour. Use about a tablespoon of powdered Smilax root per mug, and sweetening it to taste with agave nectar or honey. Add some Cayenne pepper to give it a little bite. Stress,

Adrenal Glands,

Sexual Responsiveness By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

the stomach, feelings of fearfulness and anxiety, insomnia, and, in more extreme cases, racing heart and panic. For this reason, the adrenal is also known as the stress gland. Stress researcher Hans Selye, M.D., taught us that all stresses affect the adrenal gland. Whether it is stress caused by our spouse, children, parents, work, heavy metals, parasites, poor diet, lack of sleep, pain, chronic illness, or any other cause you can think of, they all work on the adrenal gland.

T

here is a lot more to sexual hormones than estrogen and testosterone. Diminished libido can often be traced to the effects that stress has on our often overlooked adrenal glands: job stress, spouse stress, toxin stress, and lack of sleep all affect our love life. Lifestyle changes and nutritional support can restore our desire to heights many have thought they could no longer attain. When we think of sex hormones, we generally think about the ovaries, where women make estrogens and progesterone, and the testes, where men make testosterone. But the adrenal glands, which sit on top of each kidney, can play a substantial role in our sexuality. The adrenal gland is composed of two main parts: the cortex and the medulla. The cortex is the outside part, and produces many steroid hormones that regulate our blood sugar and fluid balance. This is also where women make their DHEA and testosterone. Although it is a relatively small amount of testosterone compared to men, it is still a very significant factor in the female libido. When the adrenal cortex is stressed out in women, it may reduce their sexual desire. The medulla, the inside part of the adrenal gland, makes adrenaline, which gives us that uncomfortable fight-or-flight response, sweaty palms, knot in

April 2008

44

The usual job of the adrenal cortex is to maintain blood sugar by storing glycogen (sugars in a long chain) in the liver. When we are stressed we use up all our adrenal reserves, and our blood sugar begins to drop. The brain registers this drop in blood sugar and signals to the adrenal medulla to start pouring out adrenaline into the bloodstream. This adrenaline mobilizes fat and takes it to the liver to be converted into blood sugar. This is all well and good. The blood sugar comes back up and our body doesn’t die—but now we are flooded with adrenaline. This happens to many people in the middle of the night. You might have experienced it yourself: you wake up with a start with lots of energy and begin reviewing your life history or the recent stressful events of the day. The adrenals are a big deal in many people’s sex lives. People usually feel sexier on vacation when the stress level is down. They can relax and also make up their sleep deficit. Many couples complain that they are just too tired to be interested in sex. A great rule for rebuilding the adrenals: “rest is the best.” One can guarantee that if one spouse is feeling fearful and anxious, he or she is definitely not feeling very sexy. Stress can likewise affect the man who has just had prostate surgery or is taking medication that interferes with his erection. He worries about it, the adrenaline pours out, and the anxiety about his performance further dismantles his sexual response. Stress about one’s appearance can also affect sexuality. Being overweight is a factor influenced by the adrenal gland. People who can’t mobilize their fat to make energy always have

www.HBMag.com

a depleted adrenal gland. Your adrenal cortex must be healthy in order to turn fat into blood sugar. When the adrenals are stressed and the fat begins to accumulate, people turn to sugar and carbohydrates to get some energy. When eating carbohydrates, the insulin comes out of the pancreas and stores all the calories as fat and the vicious cycle begins. So how can we maintain healthy adrenal glands and ensure our optimal sexual life? Begin by doing everything you can do to reduce stress. Resolve conflicts in your relationships, enjoy your work, stay positive in the midst of a negative world, help others, keep up a spiritual life with prayer and meditation, and, very importantly, understand how to supplement your diet with nutrients and hormonal support. Health-oriented physicians should have a broad range of tools to support the adrenal gland. Start with some basic principles. Use additive-free sea salt. Heresy? Not really. Unless you are very sick and in the end stages of congestive heart failure with swollen ankles and shortness of breath, even people with high blood pressure can take some salt without much problem, according to the National Institutes of Health. Salt levels in the body are controlled by the adrenal glands, and if you don’t take in any salt, the adrenal has to work a lot harder to hold the salt in the body. Strange as it sounds, adequate salt intakes mean healthy blood sugar levels. All of the adrenal hormones, and all the sex hormones for that matter, are steroids. Steroids are made from cholesterol. You need good sources of cholesterol. Forget the margarine and only eat butter. Keep up a good protein intake, which will also provide good sources of cholesterol. Remember what Dr. Robert Atkins and many others have told us: it is a highcarbohydrate diet that produces high cholesterol, not a high-cholesterol diet. In addition to basic diet considerations, supplementation is extremely important to keep our adrenal glands healthy in the face of the enormous stress

most of us face in our daily lives. The highest concentration of vitamin C in the human body is in the adrenal cortex. I recommend patients take 3,000 mg to 5,000 mg before bed. And patients under extreme stress can take many times this much without getting diarrhea. But don’t expect to be able to take this much vitamin C if you use a cheap product. Lower-quality ascorbic acid is very acidic and upsetting to the stomach and intestines, producing gas and diarrhea at much lower dosages. It is much better to take buffered vitamin C, which is much less acidic and easier on the system.

The Cure For

Spring

Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is very important in adrenal health. I advise people to take 500 mg or more, two or three times per day. It is great for energy, allergy, colds and flu, and sexuality. Adrenal extracts from the health food store can be very helpful. Tablets of adrenal cortex from your physician give great energy and are not too stimulating. Whole adrenal tablets really help energy levels but should not be taken too late in the day if there is a problem with sleep. DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a major adrenal cortex hormone that declines with age; when supplemented, it improves energy and Libido. Pregnenolone is another adrenal hormone available over-the-counter, and helps mood, energy, memory, vision, and hearing. Androstenedione is a direct precursor of testosterone in the adrenals, and, although short-lived, can have a salutary effect on sexuality. For people with more impaired adrenals, your preventive medicine doctor should have a range of adrenal supportive and replacement suggestions, including homeopathics, amino acids, herbals, and hormonal support. It is much better to balance your stress with lifestyle and supplementation strategies than to let it tear down your adrenals and impair sexuality. And remember: Always check with your health care provider before beginning any course of treatment.

A Powerful Addition to

Workplace Wellness By David Neeser

O

ur society has a documented health crisis that has cultivated an epidemic of weight related health issues, including diabetes, heart disease and obesity, with rates that currently exceed 25% of all Americans. These illnesses affect more than 33% of working–age Americans, cost employers over $33 billion yearly and are directly affecting this country’s ability to remain competitive in our global economy. By the year 2016 our nation’s health care costs are projected to double to $4.1 trillion per year. Solutions to this social trend include education and awareness, tax credits for employers and wellness programs in both the public and private sectors. In today’s workplace, wellness and employee healthcare are serious issues. Terms like “stress-related-illness” and “burnout” have become far too familiar. Thus companies are looking for more ways to keep their workforce happy, healthy and productive. Despite the existence of good workplace wellness programs, many businesses are still not familiar with them or do not have the financial resources to support such programs. Moreover, while employees are not able to pay for private health insurance, they cannot afford to pay outright for medical services. Thus employers are realizing that one of the best ways to trim health care costs is to help employees stay well. Providing a complete wellness program for employees can reduce a company’s insurance premium, increase company morale and create healthy, happy and productive employees. In fact, according to research by the Wellness Council of America, for every dollar spent on wellness programs, an employer can expect a four-dollar return on their investment in the form of lower premiums and employee productivity. The downside of deciding against an employee wellness program is that the productivity of the company is at increased risk. Losing employees to disability, illness or migration to competing companies that offer health care benefits means higher rates of employee turnover. These factors alone may be sufficient incentives for employers to consider adopting health and wellness programs.

April 2008

46

But do all wellness programs engage the employee? Have health clubs made a real difference? According to the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association, in 2005 an estimated 80%-85% of the population didn’t belong to a health club for three reasons; lack of time, cost and intimidation. In general, people associate working out as work and are less likely to think that health clubs, fitness and exercise are actually fun. Consequently more and more wellness directors are incorporating team sports and activities that are fun and social into wellness programs. These activities may include dodgeball, badminton, volleyball, basketball, softball, table tennis, dance classes, fencing and other team activities that bring people together for fun, competition and social recreation. Without the intimidating health club environment, the simple but powerful act of play provides the benefits of working out without the work! Play is what we all did as children when we came home from school. We didn’t go to the health club in the afternoons; we went outside and played with our friends. Play is not only an alternative mind-set to the traditional health club, but a refreshing concept in today’s hectic, time-starved environment. To conveniently access a healthy, playful and social environment outside the workplace will become the primary ingredients of a productive workforce. In summary, community and corporate wellness directors are now offering the additional choice of play as part of the traditional fitness and exercise model of employee wellness programs. If workplace stress and weight-related illnesses are robbing you or your employees of productivity, accuracy, creativity or morale, you can improve the quality of life and your bottom line by including play in your wellness program. OVERCOMING PAIN without surgery or drugs

By Frank Shallenberger, MD, HMD

Ozone & Prolozone®Therapy Ozone has been used in medicine for over 70 years. It is a naturally occurring molecule that consists of three atoms of oxygen. Because oxygen atoms usually combine in pairs, the 3rd atom of oxygen present in ozone gives it a much greater capacity for inducing healing (by donating the extra molecule of oxygen to damaged tissue) than any other naturally occurring substance. This high level of reactivity, combined with the innate safety of oxygen, makes ozone an ideal molecule for many regenerative processes. Prolozone therapy is derived from the Latin word “Aproli” which means to regenerate or rebuild, and the word “ozone.” It is called Prolozone therapy because the treatment uses localized injections of ozone gas to regenerate new tissue in areas where it has become damaged. Prolozone therapy is a non-surgical treatment that offers a permanent cure for almost any source of chronic or acute pain. It can be used to repair damaged joints, backs, necks, vertebral discs, shoulder rotator cuff injuries, soft tissues, tendons, ligaments and more.

Applications: If a reasonable trial of rest, chiropractic, and physical therapy haven’t cured a pain condition, or when the doctor has told you that your degenerated knee, back, neck, shoulder, or hip is going to need surgery, investigating Prolozone therapy is an excellent option. The damaged, degenerated tissues are starving for oxygen – which is the reason they hurt and won’t heal. Prolozone injections supply oxygen to the areas that need it most and stimulate specialized cells called fibroblasts and chondroblasts to produce more cartilage, ligaments and connective

tissue. The result is accelerated healing, even in chronically painful tissues that have long since been unable to heal.

CASE STUDY: Jack Jack was 52 years old when he first came to the clinic. He had always been an energetic, active man. But all that had changed five years before when he injured his back. He was forced to stop all forms of exercise, even riding his off road motorcycle and bicycle. After 18 months of medication, chiropractic, and physical therapy, he was told he had degenerated discs in his lower spine and required surgery. But Jack was opposed to surgery. So he continued his treatments, hoping for something good to happen. It never did. After another 18 months, his insurance company told him that unless he submitted to surgery, they would no longer cover his medical expenses. But Jack was adamant about not having surgery. So he started paying for the treatments out of his pocket. He quit working, and continued trying to get well naturally. Two years later, he heard about Prolozone therapy. When Jack came to the clinic, he was in obvious pain. He got up from the chair and walked into the treatment room with difficulty. He complained about severe pain in his lower back that radiated down both legs. He was taking narcotic pain medication every day just to get by. After the first injection, Jack immediately felt better. He returned for 4 more injections. These were given over a 2-month period. At the end of this time he was pain free. It is now a little over 2 years since jack was first treated. He is back to riding his bike, rock climbing, and back packing. His case is not unusual. Our bodies were designed to heal themselves. But in order to do so,

NATURAL BEAUTY

Your Skin is Like a

What you put on the outside of your body is just as important as what you put in your body!

I

magine your typical day: You get up in the morning and brush your teeth with toothpaste. Then you take a shower using shower gel or soap, shampoo and conditioner. After you’ve dried yourself off, you apply moisturizer to your skin, makeup to your face and perhaps some hair gel, mousse or hairspray. A spray of perfume or cologne, an application of deodorant and you’re ready for breakfast. What you’re probably not aware of is the phenomenal amount of toxins you’ve just absorbed into your body within your first hour of waking. Even worse, it is likely that every single product you used contains toxic and carcinogenic elements – from your toothpaste to your deodorant. Keep in mind that the skin is the body’s largest organ and it is very efficient at absorbing and transporting to the blood and cells whatever it comes into contact with. Barbara Griggs, the author of Green Pharmacy: The History and Evolution of Western Herbal Medicine (Healing Arts Press, Rochester, 1991) tells this story of healing via poultices applied to the skin: “This hot, aromatic poultice of stimulating and antiseptic herbs very probably did the trick – and reminds us that until only very recently, poultices and foot-baths were very common ways of applying and delivering medicine, not just because of their

Sponge

local heating or counter-irritant value, but because their virtues are absorbed through the skin. Mustard foot-baths – piping hot – have always been a popular remedy for coughs, colds and ‘chestiness’ in my family – a folk-remedy of long standing which we have always found highly effective.” Ointments and creams are also commonly used to deliver relief thru the skin and have been used for millenia. Conditions such as arthritis, fungus, numerous skin conditions, sore muscles and joints and even angina are treated with ointments and creams. Ointments today contain drugs that are rubbed into the skin. Because of the possibility of side effects and over dosage, very specific instructions guide the proper usage of these products. These instructions include what side effects may occur and the action to take if they do. It has been widely known for generations that what comes in contact with the skin is absorbed and enters the bloodstream quickly. Try it for yourself. Peel a clove of garlic and stand on it with a bare foot and see how soon you taste garlic. Today, doctors use skin patches to deliver medications thru the skin and into the bloodstream without injections. The latest generation of this technology involves using a gel to rub on the skin and deliver the medication. These methods are revolutionizing the delivery of drugs for many purposes including pain relief, birth control and to stop smoking. April 2008

Be sure to read product labels. When you see ingredients listed that are long and hard to pronounce, many which contain numbers, ask yourself what these ingredients are and how safe are they? Look them up on the internet if you can. The truth is that there are hundreds if not thousands of synthetic, chemical products used in personal care products and they increase dramatically every year. There are reports and studies linking these chemicals to physical disorders on a regular basis. Furthermore, the FDA is not investigating the ingredients in personal care products. The result is that manufacturers can put practically any chemicals they want into personal products, even if they are hazardous chemical listed in the RTECS (Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances) database of toxicity, and even if they are considered a toxic waste chemical by the EPA. Some are known carcinogens and contribute to liver failure and nervous system disorders. The solution is to protect yourself by learning the truth about these products and to switch to products made with safe and or natural ingredients. There are safe products that you can buy that are worth looking for and finding. You don’t have to continue to expose yourself and your family to toxic chemicals in your personal care products. The Most Powerful Drug Used By Mankind Continued from page 19.

You will be amazed at the changes in your life, when you fill your mind with powerful thoughts, and express the emotion as words. At first you may not feel what you are saying, but if you are consistent, before you know it, you actually feel the change because the words themselves have an emotional charge. I am not suggesting that you suppress your emotions. Changing your feeling is not the same as suppressing your emotions. Have you ever met someone who seemed transparent? They said what they meant and acted in a consistent manner. It is refreshing to know these enjoyable people. They are original, natural, authentic and sincere. You feel like you can trust them. We have been deeply programmed with a means of communication that is extremely limited because the words often mean one thing and the emotional energy and body language say something entirely different. The words do not convey the truth of what we really feel. We attach emotions to words based on our social environmental programming, and each culture has a unique interpretation; yet the body language is similar. You know without a doubt when someone is angry regardless of the language. The actual words we use would not matter so much if they were said in a loving way. Luther Burbank, the renowned botanist and author of The Training of the Human Plant, wrote that plants may not understand the spoken word, but they were capable of telepathically understanding meaning. My stepfather was a perfect example of this; he developed a rose garden and was well known for his beautiful roses. However, while he was working in his garden, we would hear him cuss at his roses. Yet they flourished. The reason was because it was not the words he was saying, but the feeling of love that was projected even though he cussed. Plant life responds to the vibration of feeling, despite the words. Certainly there was a contradiction of words and emotions, but, if we really get in touch with, look at or listen, you will realize how few of our words convey the sincere emotion of what we are saying and feeling. Understanding the power of words and communicating what you actually mean emotionally through feelings and body language will cause others to feel you are original, natural, genuine and sincere. If you are not already, you too, will be counted among the authentic few. “Words are the most powerful drug used by mankind, by Kipling in his 1923 speech. References: 1. very indigenous culture originally searched among local natural resources looking for herbs to heal their ailments. They often found amazingly effective remedies.

In China, this quest for healing substances evolved into a sophisticated system seeking to identify both the specific qualities of any particular disease and the unique properties of the appropriate remedies for it. This system of herbal medicine is continually being refined even in modern times.

CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE

Looking Outside to Understand What’s Going On Inside It may sound funny, but to understand how Oriental Medicine uses herbs you need to pay attention to the weather. The reason is that the ancient Chinese saw themselves as part of nature. And as part of nature, they reasoned that the events and experiences they saw in nature applied equally to them. As a result, they described disease in terms that sound much like weather reports. For example, a disease might have heat symptoms, such as a fever. Or there might be symptoms that get worse in cold weather, like some forms of arthritis. The symptoms might move from place to place, like the wind, or they might include a sensation of heaviness and lethargy, like someone could feel in very humid weather. Over time these qualities became part of a coherent, systematic approach to healing with herbal medicine.

By Dr. Bruce Eichelberger, OMD

At their core, Oriental herbal prescriptions require an accurate diagnosis using the above concepts. At the most basic level, you can narrow down the qualities of a disease into 8 qualities:

Hot

Cold

External

Internal

Excess

Deficient

Yang

Yin

Notice that these qualities come in complementary pairs. These pairs aren’t absolute, nor are they opposites. Instead they are relative to one another and describe the poles of different ‘spectrums’ of symptom qualities. The spectrum of Hot-Cold, for example, includes Warm, Neutral and Cool. Just like the environmental terms used to describe diseases, these same terms describe the herbs used in Oriental Medicine. An herb has Hot, Warm, Neutral, Cool or Cold qualities. To treat a hot condition, you would typically use cold herbs. It sounds simple, but can be very effective.

Herbs in Chinese Medicine also have tastes that reflect their effect on the body as well as specific meridian/organ systems that they influence. Here’s an example. Ginseng is an herb you may have heard of. According to Oriental Medicine, it is sweet and slightly bitter tasting. Its temperature is slightly warm and it influences ... the spleen, lung and heart. In the case of Ginseng, its warm quality means that it stimulates activity in the body, particularly in the three organs it influences. The sweet taste (at least sweet in Oriental Medical terms!) means that it strengthens or tonifies the body. The bitter quality means that it helps descend energy in the body, which can help settle and consolidate a person’s energy.

This approach has several advantages. First, because there are always effects from an herb that you may not want, combining it with herbs that neutralize those unwanted effects helps focus the healing properties of the formula. In addition, you can use herbs to enhance the specific aspect of the formula you are going for.

they described disease in terms that sound much like weather reports.

In addition, each herb has specific functions, symptoms it treats best, and symptoms for which you should never use it. In the case of Ginseng, it’s great for strengthening digestion, increasing energy and improving general health, but you would want to be very careful using it with someone who has high blood pressure. All totaled, for each individual herb in the Oriental pharmacy, there can be up to 15 different qualities such as these. And when you consider that this pharmacy contains over 5,000 substances, you can imagine the amount of information necessary to create an effective formula for any particular condition.

From Herbs to Formulas Even though there is such detailed information for each herb in Oriental Medicine, you almost never see them used as single remedies. More commonly you’ll see them combined with other herbs into formulas specific for a person’s individual state of health.

In typical Oriental fashion, herb functions within a formula are described in metaphoric terms. The herb or herbs giving the primary effect are called the “king” herbs. Those herbs in the formula that support the function of the primary herbs are called the “minister” herbs. In addition, there can be “assistant” herbs to provide balance and neutralize unwanted effects from the king and minister herbs. Finally, many formulas have “messenger” or “guide” herbs that direct the effects of the formula to the correct area of the body. Oriental Medicine’s use of herbal formulas is very sophisticated and, when applied correctly, very effective for correcting health issues. Be sure your practitioner has a solid understanding of how to use these herbs so you can get the maximum benefit from them. References: 1. he wide array of energy therapy methods to choose from today can be confusing and overwhelming. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM, part of the NIH) has identified five domains of complementary/alternative medicine (CAM), one of which is energy therapies: “healing that involves the use of energy fields.” Two specific types are identified: (a) bio-field therapies, which are “intended to affect energy fields that purportedly surround and penetrate the human body,” and (b) bio-electromagnetic-based therapies, which “involve the unconventional” use of electro-magnetic fields, such as pulsed fields, magnetic fields or alternating-current or direct current fields. Healing Touch is a relaxing, nurturing energy therapy, which involves individuals in their own healing process. Using gentle touch on or above the body, Healing Touch assists in balancing your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well being, as it enhances the body’s relaxation response. The therapy works with your energy field to support the body’s innate, natural capacity to heal. It is safe for all age groups and works in harmony with standard medical care and other complementary modalities. Healing Touch may be used in a wide variety of settings, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, private practices, hospices, and spas. Your choice of practitioner is more important than your choice of a particular energy modality. The caring ethic of the practitioner is of even greater importance, due to the interaction between your energy fields. This interaction allows a therapeutic alliance to develop to a depth that may otherwise take many months in a more cognitive-oriented approach, evoking healing in the recipient. April 2008

Janet Mentgen RN, founded Healing Touch in 1989, as a certified program of study through Healing Touch International, which is endorsed by the American Holistic Nurse’s Association. The Healing Touch Curriculum is a 120-hour continuing education program consisting of 5 levels, moving from beginning to advanced practitioner. After completing four levels, students undertake a minimum one-year mentorship with a Certified Healing Touch Practitioner (CHTP). Upon completion, students are then eligible to apply for certification.

How can individuals benefit from Healing Touch? • Reduce stress, calm anxiety and depression •Decrease pain • Strengthened immune system • Enhance recovery from surgery/medical procedures • Deepen spiritual connection • Supporting cancer care • Easing acute and chronic conditions • Creating a sense of well being, inner peace and harmony “One’s thoughts, especially when amplified, by intent or emotion, leave an impact on matter.” -Valerie Hunt. pril 22 is Earth Day. How do you plan on celebrating? Well, people all around the world are stepping up and getting involved in fun and creative ways. Whether through the traditional river pick-up or a three day arts festival, participating in Earth Day is a great way to take back a few of our ecological footprints and join with others to make your community a better place to live.

The World

North Norfolk Coast will be celebrating Earth Day through education. Deepdale Backpackers and Camping, an eco friendly backpacker’s hostel and campsite, will be hosting a whole range of eco-friendly organizations for an exhibition of environmental technologies and advice. This free event is intended for both businesses and individuals interested in making their business and homes more earth friendly. The exhibition will have information about everything from solar panels to LED lights, even wind turbines. If you are looking for eco info, this is the place to be.

Calgary, Canada Calgary is urging their communities to take on the “22 minute makeover.” Ward 9, a community in Calgary, is encouraging this idea and challenging its members. The challenge is simple: Commit to taking 22 minutes out of the day to pick up litter around schools, work places and neighborhoods.

Can’t jump on a plane? Think Reno!

El Nido, Palawan, Philippines April 22, 2007 in El Nido, Palawan, Philippines will celebrate Earth Day through Coastal, Canal and Limestone Cliff Trail clean-ups by the residents of the El Nido Town. Community leaders and residents will be participating in these events. Even the guests in town are encouraged to join in the effort. April 22 is also the first day of the Kalugta’n Arts Festival (or Earth Arts Festival). The theme is “Pasiglahin ang Kulay ng Kalikasan” (Brighten up the Colors our Environment/Earth). The art is focused on nature, as well as the workshops. The art workshops start on April 23-25 and offer guitar, terracotta, painting, theater, keyboard, percussion, flute, creative writing and interpretative dance lessons for participants, ages 5-40 yrs.

Reno hosts a great Earth Day event each year at Idlewild Park. It is a free event with workshops, children’s activities, a sustainable farmer’s market, and much more. Spend the day along the Truckee River with other members of the community. Reno Bike Project will be offering a free bike valet service for your bike, roller blades, or skateboard. Simply drop them off in front of the California Building and receive a free raffle ticket for a New Belgium Brewery bike messenger bag with goodies. Bikes and parts can be donated to the Reno Bike Project at the Bike Valet. Whether near or far, make sure to join people around the world on this special day. In addition to being a great chance to spend time with others in the community, the planet will thank you! FITNESS

Warm Up With Balance Drills Elongate With Stretches By Kirk Sachtler, DPT, OCS, CMPT, CSCS

W

hile a common belief is that stretching before exercise will prevent various injuries, research challenges this notion. In fact, studies show that the primary time stretching prevents injury is when your range of motion is insufficient for the activity you are attempting. What does, in fact, prevent injury is improving your balance and agility, two skills that can be improved for benefit at any age.

How It Works Balance and agility rely on three systems in your body that are coordinated by the brain. These three systems are the: Visual, Inner Ear (vestibular), and Proprioceptive Systems. The rarely talked about Proprioceptive System is a system of neurologic receptors found in joints and muscles that give feedback to the brain about their position and motion, and, is simple to train.

Studies One study examined the effects of preexercise stretching on lower limb injuries during an 11-week training period with 1,538 Australian army recruits. A control (non-stretching) group and a stretching group were compared and found to have the same amount of injuries. Another study looked at marathon runner injuries. In this review of 1,543 high level runners, 47% who stretched regularly were hurt during a one year period while only 33% of those who didn’t stretch suffered injuries. Finally, systematic reviews of sports medicine literature showed again and again that stretching is not an antidote for injury. Much research has been done in this area and is easily accessed via the internet.

Preventing Injuries The research shows that warm-up activities should begin with dynamic maneuvers to elevate one’s heart rate, jumping jacks for example. This should be followed by brief (5-10 second) stretches of the muscles you’ll be using, which are then followed by balance drills that warm-up your Proprioceptive System. Lastly, perform some dynamic stretches, which are maneuvers similar to your event or activity, e.g., repetitive throwing motions for a quarterback or baseball pitcher. Consider the professional bicyclists who spin their bike for 30 minutes or more just before the start of a time trial, or the runners performing various sprinting drills before the event. Just because these people are world class athletes does not mean that you can’t use the same techniques! A great example comes from the Japanese National Volleyball Team. After running and jumping for several minutes they practice balance drills that you can do too!

Balance Drills You Can Do Begin by standing on one leg with the goal of holding this position quietly for 30 seconds. As you improve, increase the challenge by doing this barefoot. Once you can do this, put your shoe back on and stand on a soft surface like a pillow or plush carpet. Again, to increase the challenge, do this barefoot. For a really extreme challenge try doing these drills with your eyes closed! The important part is to keep the ankle still and gradually progress the time of practice.

When To Stretch Stretching is a fantastic, healthy activity. In fact, it is one of the best means to counteract the effects of gravity on our body. Gravity is the main reason we shrink as we age, and why our posture and joints deteriorate. The tremendous benefit of stretching is that it elongates our muscle system, which takes pressure off of our joints. This allows our body to attain better alignment and handle the stresses of gravity more efficiently. Consider stretching as a workout of and by itself, so set aside a specific time for flexibility training. Anywhere from one to four workouts per week can give you significant gains in flexibility. And the best time for stretching is anytime when you can ensure that your body is warmed up. If you are stretching as part of athletics, stretch AFTER the event or activity.

HEALTHY COOKING

H

urray! After months of warming our bones by the fire on cold winter nights, spring is finally here. With gradually warming temperatures and longer brighter days, spring enlivens all living things. And spring vegetables are perfect candidates for an elegant spring brunch menu. Asparagus, spinach, shallots and cherry tomatoes are a few springtime eats that go great together. An elegant spinach and asparagus quiche is a great way to celebrate spring flavors. The nutritional components of the quiche ingredients are as satisfying as their flavors. Popeye ate spinach for a reason! In just half of a cup of cooked spinach there are 32 calories, 1 gram of fat, 5 grams of carbohydrate, 4 grams of dietary fiber and 4 grams of Protein. Cooked spinach also provides a terrific source of Vitamin A, as well as Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Riboflavin, Folate, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Potassium, Copper, Manganese and Selenium. And even more, spinach is a strong anti-inflammatory. Asparagus is another nutrient-rich spring ingredient. In 1 cup of cooked asparagus, there are

only 32 calories, 1 gram of fat, 3 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of dietary fiber and 5 grams of protein. Asparagus is also a great source of Vitamin C, Iron, Magnesium and Zinc. The eggs in the quiche are also a key element of the overall nutrients in this dish, providing a significant source of Protein, Riboflavin and Selenium. Baking the quiche on thinly sliced potatoes provides a Potassium-high base, in place of the traditionally high calorie butter and flour crust. This quiche is a wonderful medium to enjoy spring’s super foods in an epicurean manner.

Asparagus & Spinach Quiche on Potato Crust For the Potato Pie Crust: Ingredients: 8 ounces small red potatoes (scrubbed or peeled and sliced 1/4 inch thin) 2 teaspoons Olive Oil Method of Preparation: Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees F. Coat a 9-inch pie pan with vegetable cooking spray. Beginning in center, arrange potato slices in slightly overlapping circles up to rim. Lightly brush with olive oil and press down gently. Set aside.

For the Quiche: Ingredients: 1 tablespoon chopped shallots 1 (10-ounce) of fresh or frozen spinach (if frozen, thawed and drained) 1/2 cup cooked chopped asparagus 1/2 cup sweet grape tomatoes (sliced) 1 cup part-skim ricotta cheese 3/4 cup grated sharp Gruyere cheese 1/4 whole milk 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1/4 teaspoon chopped rosemary 1/2 teaspoon chopped thyme 1/4 teaspoon chopped lavender 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper Method of Preparation: Heat a sauté pan over medium heat with a little olive oil or butter. Sauté the shallots, spinach and asparagus until tender-not mushy. Place the sautéed spinach and vegetables on top of the potato crust. Mix well. In a small bowl combine ricotta, Gruyere, milk, eggs, rosemary, thyme, salt and black pepper, and mix well. Spoon cheese mixture on top of the vegetables and top with lavender. Bake the quiche for 20 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean and crust is golden brown. For more info, contact Jillana at Jillananadine@yahoo.com.
