TODD’S SUCCESS STORY My name is Todd Patterson. I had Gulf War Syndrome and was plagued with many symptoms. I had no energy, was pale and swollen, and in terrible pain. I had often considered ending my life because the pain was unbearable. Janet and I have been friends for a while. She had been trying to get me to Reno for quite some time to detox my body. Finally convinced, I arrived at the Circle of Life Spa for my first of many wraps, sauna sessions, and massages. I had some difficult and emotional periods as my body detoxed. Janet worked on changing my diet to encourage an alkaline environment which promotes health and healing. Janet and Carla were right there supporting me through it all. After 2 weeks, the 3 of us stood in the foyer of the spa hugging and crying as I prepared to go home, a healthy man. I never thought I would be pain free, yet here I stood feeling amazing. My swelling was gone and I looked vibrant because I had color and energy. Most importantly, I no longer felt pain. I was a vision of health that none of us had seen in quite a while. Today, my wife and I are adopting a baby girl from China. I can be the father I want to be because I am healthy. I thank Janet and Carla for giving so much of themselves to help me heal.
Other services include: Far Infared Sauna, Floatation Tank, Massage, Dance Classes and Meeting Rooms.

contents Inside This Issue
To our readers, February is heart month and even though we do not have any articles that deal directly with the strongest muscle in our body, we do have plenty of articles that deal with reducing stress, which ultimately strengthens our heart and our overall immune system. Most importantly Healthy Beginnings’ content material is about preventing major illnesses in how we incorporate every facet of our lives to be more productive mentally, spiritually and physically. Education and timing is the key to changing negative habits be it in what we eat or what we think about. It is my firm belief and my opinion that what we eat and what we think about determines how we feel both physically and mentally. Look around you, it seems that those people that talk about being sick end up sick and those that talk about only the negatives tend to encounter the negative. Life is too short, do not take yourself too seriously, be silly every once in a while. We have so much to be thankful and greatful for… smile and you will see that the whole world will smile with you!! Thank you again for picking up Healthy Beginnings, It’s a Lifestyle Magazine we sincerely appreciate your support. Keep in mind this is “Your Local Resource For Healthy Living” your input is valuable. Until our next issue... As always, Best in Health and Happiness

Our Cover Written by Erina Fischer Think of February and you may conjure up images of cupid, hearts, love, roses, and of course, chocolate. In the past chocolate ( roses, and of course, chocolate. In the past chocolate (Theobroma cacao) has been branded as a dietary evil, but thanks to the advances of science we now know that good, quality chocolate is a phenomenal Superfood. Full of antioxidants and heart-protective benefi ts, in moderation, chocolate can be a wonderful addition to your diet. The beans from the cacao tree, native to Central and South America, were once used as currency. Now the chocolate popular today, made from cocoa powder, sugar and cacao butter is commonly used as gift giving. Caution to chocolate lovers: the real healthy chocolate is not your grocery store candy bar fi lled with vegetable oils, sugar and additives, but rather the true health benefi ts of authentic chocolate are found in pure dark chocolate with at least 70 percent cocoa content. Real chocolate provides anti-aging fl avonoids and polyphenol antioxidants that studies show prevent heart disease and reduce infl ammation. Chocolate contains many of the same benefi cial compounds found in red wine, green tea, fruits and vegetables. So grab a bar of real dark chocolate or a box of decadent truffl es and enjoy guilt-free with loved ones this Valentine’s Day.

NEWSbriefs Non-toxic Cure for Lymphoma
What’s New at The Pilates Coach in 2007
N
T
orman deLeuze, founder of ZD Wines, has been battling Lymphoma with non-toxic methods over the last three years. His tireless efforts have led him to try a number of alternative treatments but often without scientific research to prove or disprove their individual worth. The Lymphoma is not cured, but he is still doing well and enjoying life, which speaks volumes for the general approach. As a result of Norman’s many efforts to find a non-toxic cure for lymphoma and the belief in the excellence of the University of California Davis Health System, the deLeuze Family has gifted $200,000 to benefit the UC Davis Cancer Center. An additional, $13,300 was gifted in the name of ZD Wines First Taste members. The UC Davis Health System Department of Internal Medicine and the Division of Hematology and Oncology generously matched 75% of the total to create “The deLeuze Family Endowment Fund for a Non-toxic Cure for Lymphoma”. The Mission Statement is “This endowment fund is established to recognize and further promote the outstanding research approach of Dr. Joseph Tuscano and the UC Davis Cancer Center in pursuing a non-toxic cure for lymphoma which will have widespread availability for lymphoma patients. When a cure for lymphoma is found, this fund will be designated toward non-toxic cures for disease in perpetuity.” The remaining 25% of the gift will be for current use by Dr. Tuscano and the UC Davis Cancer Center. 8. Laugh. A good chuckle increases circulation throughout the body.

Dr. Bruce Eichelberger, OMD By Erina Fischer
“Whatever we experience for a long time, we call it normal, but normal is a setting on the dryer.”
D
r. Bruce Eichelberger, OMD, of the Reno Alternative Health Center, has been practicing Oriental and Natural Medicine for 35 years. His interest in Oriental Medicine originates from his college years. Along with being a major in psychology, Dr. Eichelberger studied Qi Gong, a form of Chinese martial arts and healing energy work. He describes becoming a psych major as being a “natural connection for me”, but was also drawn to the eastern healing work of Qi Gong, which translates to “cultivating vital energy”. Dr. Eichelberger studied under a Chinese Qi Gong Master who came to America to teach free from the oppression of communism. Dr. Eichelberger describes Qi Gong as “a healing process so rich and varied with 1,000 variables”. The individuality of eastern medicine made sense to Dr. Eichelberger.
free our energy, it allows our body to begin to heal. It’s this two-fold effect, inner-and-outer health, which can add quality to one’s life. “When you look as good as you feel,” Dr. Eichelberger said “You feel better. You have energy, vitality, resilience, adaptability and creativity.”
Dr. Eichelberger describes a balanced, healthy life as a function of our stress-management skills, balance between our relationship, spiritual and work lives, as well as outstanding genetics, an appropriate diet and exercise. Sounds easy, right? It’s possible to be stressed just thinking about all of the variables, but there is a difference between optimal health and perfection. Dr. Eichelberger understands that perfection is not an option for most, if not all, individuals, but rather is being able to recognize “One thing can’t address everyone,” Dr. Eichelberger said the signals that ourselves, mentally, physically and spiritually are “It doesn’t work like that, or we would all be well.” out of balance and knowing what minor, small compensations For seven years Dr. Eichelberger was an administrator at we can make to get back in our optimal zone. a martial arts school in Los Angeles. TOP 10 Supplements/Foods for Fitness Enthusiasts H
enry’s Farmers Market suggests the following foods and supplements to help keep fitness enthusiasts healthy this season:
1. Water, although technically not a food, is the most important thing a fitness enthusiast can put in their body. Water helps keep vital organs functioning properly by riding the body of toxins, hydrating muscle cells and helping the body burn fat by using it as an energy source. Athletes should drink at least one gallon of water per day, especially when exercising. 2. Sports Drinks, in addition to water, can help keep you hydrated during workouts. Sports drinks help replace electrolytes lost through sweat and provide carbohydrate energy to working muscles. Also, flavored sports drinks may be more appealing than plain water, so you might be more likely to keep drinking and stay hydrated. 3. A Multivitamin, taken daily is one of the best training tools for fitness enthusiasts. A multivitamin, which contains a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, will help keep the body healthy and give an athlete more energy.
4. Iron, is an especially important mineral for fitness enthusiasts. Iron carries oxygen in the red blood cells to the muscles and is necessary to produce energy. Lack of iron can cause anemia, fatigue and a decrease in endurance, so athletes need to make sure to eat plenty of iron-rich foods or consider an iron supplement. 5. Calcium is another essential nutrient for fitness gurus. Osteoporosis can be a problem for people, especially athletes and women, who do not consume enough calcium. Many people fall short of their daily calcium needs because they dislike or cannot eat dairy products. These people should look into taking a calcium supplement or eating soy products to make sure they are keeping their bones healthy. 6. Soy Protein can be an important tool for those looking to get and keep fit. Soy protein contains a good amount of key amino acids which may boost metabolism. Soy also contains isoflavones which can help lower cholesterol. Athletes can get soy protein from foods like soymilk, tofu, and edamame. It’s also a great idea to add a scoop of soy protein powder to the post-workout smoothie. 7. Low-Fat Proteins are important for athletes. Eating proteinrich chicken, fish and turkey (the leanest of all meats), will help athletes sustain energy during workouts and keep energy levels high throughout the day. 8. Carbohydrates with a low glycemic index, like vegetables, whole grains, brown rice, oats and sweet potatoes, provide energy without an abundance of calories to weigh you down. These carbs are filling and are rich in key nutrients such as B vitamins, iron and vitamin E. 9. Dairy products provide fitness enthusiasts with two key components – protein for energy and calcium for healthy bones. Lowfat dairy products such as yogurt, cottage cheese, skim milk and lowfat cheese make perfect post-workout snacks.

10. Fruit is a great way to add both vitamins and water to your diet. Try oranges and melons which have high water content. But be sure to go organic as conventional fruits with high water content often have high levels of pesticides. Fruits are ideal snacks for both before and after a workout since they hydrate and provide energy with natural sugars.

Lundahl and Associates reported that the design of the Tahoe Center saved 64 percent of the energy from a baseline laboratory building according to ASHRAE 90.1 standards, and between 70-80 percent of the normal water consumption used in similar buildings. “The building was designed as a teaching tool so that we can educate the general public as well as students,” said Todd Lankenau, a Principal of Lundahl and Associates. “We expect about 10,000 people per year to visit the Tahoe Center and learn more about sustainable design.” Some of the building’s numerous sustainable features include; structural concrete with 25 percent fly ash, wheat board cabinets and carpet tiles with recycled materials in classrooms and offices, particleboard substrate cabinetry and linoleum floors in laboratories, light
shelves that refract natural light from the sun inside the building up to thirty feet and interior glass walls that pass light to the corridors, and a compressed natural refueling facility located behind the building. In addition, trees harvested from the forested building site were milled in place, saving the transportation energy expenses. The milled wood was used for finish work, and unmilled wood was shredded and used for erosion control and ground cover. “We only disrupted the area that was absolutely necessary for the building, parking areas, and the infrastructure for the site,” said Lankenau. “We deliberately fenced off and protected everything else around it, so it was a very tight building site; it was almost like we were building in an urban environment.” According to Lankenau, students at Sierra Nevada College were able to participate in the project by helping with landscaping and setting up educational displays for visitors. Exhibits were created to explain the function of the building and how the building systems work, as well as how energy is saved, the history of Lake Tahoe, and the science that is being conducted to preserve the clarity and quality of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding environment. “TCES is a learning experience to teach how we can responsibly preserve the quality of Lake Tahoe and show visitors how to apply some of the systems we’ve used in the building to their own homes.” By Amanda Powell For more information about environmentally sustainable design, the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, or Lundahl and Associates, Architects, log onto www.lundahlandassoc.com.
Taking a “Wellness Day” to Celebrate You
M
any of us are accustomed to the concept of taking a sick day, when what we really need is a day just to catch up on home stuff, go to the beach or the mountains, or just have some personal time. Even better, what if we were to consider this experience a “wellness day,” knowing that we deserve to take precious time for ourselves? Wouldn’t this powerful label truly set our intention to experience a day of self-care and well-being? We may need to do some serious mental flossing to remove the thoughts and beliefs of guilt, unworthiness and the cyclical questioning of “Could I... dare I?!?” Yes, we can act with courage to travel the road less traveled and enjoy a day of inspired delight that can, and most likely will, have the power to spill into our coming days, and even into the remainder of our lives. What would you do during a whole day dedicated simply to creating a healthier you? There are no rules, but here are a few ideas to consider to make your day amazing:
SET THE STAGE
To more fully express your wellness day mission, choose to move throughout the day with intention and passion. You know that funky yoga studio you’ve been thinking about checking out? Go for it! Experience a new movement class like Nia, Pilates or even martial arts. See this day as the beginning, the renewing or the “re-youing.” Embrace exercise with gratitude and celebrate your body as you
celebrate your personal wellness day! Consider a day with no media. Yikes, what will you do with not being “over informed”? Quite possibly would you feel more peaceful, centered and at ease? Hmmm, nice beginning. No television, no newspaper and no magazines (outside of Healthy Beginnings, of course!). Next, consider a day where you do not indulge or succumb to fast food or other less-than-health- affirming food choices. Finally, consider spending the time alone or with others who are fully supportive of you … others who don’t need a lot of maintenance and share in your vision of raising loving consciousness.
GOOD EATS
To commence your wellness day on the nutritional front, you will benefit from a few necessary tools. I always begin with food – it is, after all, one of my favorite subjects. You can bless yourself and the environment with a variety of local, organic fresh fruits and vegetables. It is inspiring to consider the power that these types of foods possess. Local, organic foods tend to be more flavorful, and also supply key vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Early-season berries are starting to show up and these can be a delicious breakfast addition to whole grain cereal, a refreshing breakfast smoothie or just taken “straight up” by the handful. Your wellness can thrive when you choose to add a lively, fresh salad to your lunchtime fare. Transcend the basic and boring pale green salads and go deeper with arugula, green mustard, frisée, mizuna and baby spinach. Loaded with vital nutrients and flavor, new research from Cornell University deems leafy green spinach as a top cancer-fighter. Remember: the deeper the colors, the more abundant the disease-fighting, plant-based compounds called phytonutrients! Consider topping your colorful wonder with this tasty Raspberry Vinaigrette: • 2 Tsp. raspberry vinaigrette
• 1 Tsp. honey • 1 tsp. Dijon mustard • 2 tsp. of flaxseed oil • 1 Tsp. of extra virgin olive oil • 1 tsp. of water • 1 tsp. of fine sea salt • 1/8 tsp. freshly ground white pepper Whisk together vinegar, honey, and mustard in a bowl. Slowly whisk in oils and water until emulsified and enjoy! In the midst of your self-care afternoon, keep a stash of nuts close at hand. A small handful of nuts (about an ounce) every day has been shown to be a great way to keep cholesterol in check. Walnuts, in particular, show promise in this realm. For dinner, celebrate your sense of smell, taste and sight by exploring, building and enjoying a satisfying vegetable stir-fry. Add Vitamin C-rich red, yellow and orange peppers, kale and cabbage with hormonal balancing indoles. And don’t forget the asparagus, with its hearthealthy folate and potassium. Throughout this day, be mindful to how your intention of honoring your body, mind and soul with thoughtful care can raise the “vibration” inside and all around you. There is a wonderful, simple saying that “one high tide raises all ships.” Here is an opportunity to set the course for transformation for you and the world around you Experience today, and every day, as your wellness day! Starting The New Year By Adding
PILATES
To Your Workout Resolutions By Leslee Bender, founder of the Pilates Coach
W
ondering what to do after gaining a few unwanted pounds?? And feeling a little sluggish after the holidays. Believe it or not the average American gains up to 5-10lbs in two months. Between the rich food and alcohol our metabolism slows down and in a short matter of time we become like a car without gas or a tuneup. Pilates will not however burn a lot of calories like cardio. But, it will increase your core strength so you can indeed go longer. Pilates when done correctly tones and strengthens your muscles. There are many studios and classes offer cardio Pilates that claim to burn fat and you lose weight unfortunately this is not the case because form is lost and injuries occur. Joseph Pilates never intended for his program and method of training to be performed at warp speed by any student much less given by an inexperienced instructor. By activating your global core muscles you can achieve better posture almost immediately and it takes more calories to burn sitting up straight and activating your abs than not. We are professional sitters almost most of our lives at our new found friend the computer. Therefore we are rounded forward and live in flexion. By even sitting at our desk with feet flat on the floor and sitting up right inbetween bouts at the computer we will see changes.
Exercise
Begin standing with your feet in a neutral straight ahead position. Rock your pelvis back and forth and somehere in the middle you will find neutral. Relax your shoulders, visualize a
very tight belt around your waist pull it to the tenth hole. Now undue to the fifth, this is activation of about thirty percent of your core abdominal wall. Now take a deep breath in and smell a flower with your nose and as you exhale fog up a mirror with your mouth. Pull your abdominals gently ‘not hard’ towards your spine OK that’s part of it now the pelvic floor and yes we all have one! The best way to describe it is having to urinate!!! But you do not and hold it. Feel the bottom of your pubic bone as the first floor and the top of your sternum as the tenth. Feel as though the elevator is moving up to the fifth floor This the activation of what pilates called your powerhouse. By performing this simple exercise of core and pelvic activation you will begin to strengthen those deep muscles. By performing hundreds of crunches is a big and I mean big waste of time Remember we live in flexion!!!! So why make it worse??
When Looking At Where To Go Or What Videos To Buy
I highly recommend you find a trainer who has been teaching for longer than two years and has many credentials and has a deep understanding of anatomy not just a online course. Studios are opening like fast food chains and pumping out students like hamburgers as a big price. Unfortunately people see this as a way o make money and there is no quality control. There is a new alliance PMA and their standards are high of studios and trainers. I would suggest a studio that follows their guidelines of protocol and, as far as videos you can go to www.thepilatescoach and find many for those just beginning!!! Please see ad on page 14.

BRAIN MUSIC: A
It’s All About You
licia was beginning to struggle with her term paper. In the past this was when the trouble always began. First she’d find her mind wandering then she’d get that sluggish feeling. Finally, she’d have to confront the reality that no matter how hard she tried, it just wasn’t going to get done. This time, however, she spent a few minutes with her personal IRF and got back to work. Frank felt as if he had been gotten abuse at work all day. Maybe even all month. He was wound up and couldn’t manage to get the hassles at work off his mind. He had already yelled at the kids once this evening. This would have been the beginning of a very long night with an even worse day coming in the morning. However, he remembered his personal IRF recording and devoted some time to it. Refreshed, he went back to help his kids with their homework knowing he’d have a good night‘s sleep tonight and be ready to deal with work tomorrow. This is not a fantasy of the distant future. This is a description of a technology being used today. IRF stands for Induced Resonant Frequency. When correctly combined with two other techniques called Binaural Beats and EEG (brain wave) Coherence Analysis, IRF is a potent and benign tool for enhancing peak performance and normal daily functioning. The human brain produces minute electrical currents that are intimately associated with the very active electro-chemical processes that are an essential part of life. These tiny signals vary in predictable patterns at specific frequencies. Generally, we measure the EEG (electroencephalographic) frequencies in the range of 2 – 40 Hz. “Hz” stands for “Hertz” which means “cycles per second”. The brain has dozens of definable regions, and each one generates its own electrical patterns relevant to what tasks it’s performing and what impact those tasks are having on other regions. We’ve learned that certain low frequency brain waves often found at the interface between the Alpha band (8-12Hz) and the Theta band (4-8Hz) are associated with many peak functions as well as restorative and creative activities. During periods of quality rest the brain generates strong Alpha-Theta patterns. Unfortunately, many of us often don’t get quality rest and may not be receiving the full benefit of strong Alpha-Theta rhythms we should be getting. EEG Coherence Analysis identifies the unique patterns of coordination (and discoordination) in the brain. If there is a deficit in Alpha-Theta production, this can be measured, and a template of a stronger Coherence profile can be developed. Using this template, the pattern of Alpha-Theta frequency activity in need of support can be recorded. When these frequencies are placed on split harmonic carrier waves known as Binaural Beats, they become audible as a low rumbling sound. Listening to this sound can instruct your brain to strengthen your specific Alpha-Theta rhythm by inducing similar rhythms. This is referred to as Induced Resonant Frequency. Sometimes music is placed over these IRF sounds, but the low rumbling sounds themselves
are the music of your brain. Time spent listening to these IRF sounds appears to be similar to optimizing a computer by improving your efficiency at the electro-physiological level. The more efficiently your brain can function, the more efficiently you will perform. In an office setting active IRF therapy can be used for such problems as pain control, anxiety management, peak performance, and learning disabilities. Active IRF therapy uses your brainwaves in real time as they are produced to create the sounds coming back to you. When an IRF recording is made from the coherence of your brainwaves, listening to this recording can have some of the same effect without the need to be hooked up to an EEG. When combined with a therapeutic format such as biofeedback, the overall beneficial impact can be astounding. The extreme portability in digital sound reproduction has made the use of IRF recordings so simple that athletes use them during breaks in games or matches, students can tune-up for a few minutes before a test, or anyone in virtually any setting can use this elegantly simple and safe aid to clear their mind so they can be their best. SUPPLEMENTS 101
Super Silver “A Natural Antibiotic”
T
hroughout history, silver has been considered a universal anti-disease and anti-infection substance as well as one of the best sources of natural antibiotic treatments. At the turn of the century, scientists had discovered that the body’s most important fluids (such as blood) are colloidal (ultra-fine particles suspended in a liquid) and therefore absorb other colloidal fluids well. Consequently, colloidal silver was commonly used as a preservative and an anti-infection device throughout WWI and up until 1938. Some of the more “mature” readers of this article may remember their grandparents (before pasteurization) putting silver dollars in milk to prolong its freshness at room temperature. Prior to WWII, colloidal silver continued to be used by physicians as a mainstream antibiotic treatment and was considered quite “high-tech.” Then the pharmaceutical industry moved in, causing colloidal research to be set aside in favor of fast working and more financially lucrative drugs. Although colloidal silver’s medicinal properties have been shunned by main stream medicine, several prestigious universities (UCLA, U of Texas, BYU) and many respected medical and naturopathic practitioners have conducted research

on colloidal silver’s use and effectiveness. As a result, colloidal silver is making its appearance in some interesting places. It has been used in hospitals for years as a general antibiotic in newborn’s eyes. It is used in burn units as an antibacterial to prevent infection, reduce pain and encourage new cell growth. It is currently used in water, shower, air, and furnace filters. NASA uses a silver-based filtration

While studying regeneration of limbs, spinal cords and organs in the late 1970s, Robert O. Becker, M.D., author of The Body Electric, discovered that silver ions promote bone growth and kill surrounding “bad bacteria”. The March 1978 issue of Science Digest, in an article, “Our Mightiest Germ Fighter,” reported: “Thanks to eye-opening research, silver is emerging as a wonder of modern

medicine. Strains of pathogens resistant to silver’s action have failed to develop. Moreover, silver is virtually non-toxic.” Dr. Harry Margraf, a biochemist and pioneering silver researcher stated, “Silver is the best all-around germ fighter we have.” Antibiotic-resistant germs are now considered to be an epidemic in the United States and account for a growing number of serious infectious disorders. The majority of manufactured drug antibiotics each nullify only about a half dozen or so bacteria, whereas colloidal silver has been shown to be effective against 650 or more infectious disease organisms. According to Larry C. Ford, M.D. at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, UCLA School of Medicine, “There is no known disease-causing organism that can live in the presence of even minute traces of the chemical element of simple metallic silver.” Based on laboratory tests with colloidal silver, destructive bacteria, viruses, and fungus organisms are killed within minutes of contact. The presence of colloidal silver near a virus, fungus, bacterium or any other single celled pathogen disables its oxygen supplying metabolism enzyme. Within a few minutes, the pathogen suffocates and dies. It is then cleared out of the body by the immune, lymphatic and elimination systems. Colloidal silver has proven toxic to all tested species of fungi, bacteria, protozoa, parasites, and virus. Unlike pharmaceutical antibiotics, which destroy beneficial enzymes and probiotics, colloidal silver leaves these tissue-cell enzymes and beneficial bacteria unharmed. Thus colloidal silver is absolutely safe for humans, animals, reptiles, plants and all multi-celled living matter. Researchers report that colloidal silver is non-toxic, non-addicting, and has no
known side effects. It does not sting, and the body develops no tolerance to it. Its use does not harm the liver, kidneys, or any other part of the body and it is virtually impossible to overdose on it. In addition, it appears that disease pathogens cannot mutate or build up a tolerance to its effectiveness. Colloidal silver appears to be safe for children and pregnant and nursing women. It is tasteless, odorless, non-stinging and does not have contraindications with other medications. Taken internally it may help prevent colds, flu and all single cell organism-caused diseases. Colloidal silver can be used as a douche, atomized, nebulized, or inhaled. Applied externally, it has been shown to relieve pain and to encourage rapid regeneration of damaged cells and tissues such as in skin abrasions and burns (including sun burn). It may also be dropped into the nose, eyes and ears to help the body overcome infection.
tion, some other ingredient is present that could spoil. The container and dropper should be glass, as plastic cannot preserve the silver in liquid suspension for any length of time. Some brands with high concentrations of silver may actually not be completely safe. High concentrations of silver do not kill disease pathogens any more effectively than the safe range of 5 to 22 parts per million (ppm). A word of caution, it is advised that “homemade” colloidal silver solutions should not be used internally. However, homemade silver solutions could be useful for sterilizing surfaces, counters, tools, and as a hand wash. Any form of colloidal silver can be used effectively on food to help overcome the effects of pathogens such as E-coli.
Researchers report that colloidal silver is non-toxic, non-addicting, and has no known side effects.
When properly prepared and properly used, “it is believed that colloidal silver may prove to be one of the greatest rediscoveries in preventative, natural health care.” Many brands of colloidal silver are inferior. The highest grade is produced by the electro-colloidal / non-chemical method where the silver particles and water have been bound to each other by an electric current. The super-fine silver particles should be spherical in shape and be in the nano-angstrom size range which will keep the ionic silver particles suspended indefinitely in demineralized water. The ideal color of colloidal silver is a golden yellow. Darker colors indicate larger silver particles that tend to collect at the bottom of the container and are not true colloids. If a product contains a stabilizer or lists trace elements other than silver, or if it needs to be shaken, it is inferior. If a product requires refrigera-
Despite the research conducted and evidence supporting the healing or anti-pathogenic qualities of silver, the FDA restricts what can be said about the medicinal value of silver. Therefore, any information given here is not intended to be medical advice, it is simply reported data about colloidal silver and is intended for educational purposes only. If you have a medical condition it is strongly advised that you consult with a health practitioner and work with him/her on your protocol for recovery.

I gave up my stove!
The Discovery
I
didn’t know that I was going to be giving up my stove the day I went to the bookstore for a vegan cookbook, I just thought I was going to learn how to eat healthier. My husband and I had both read “Diet for a New America” by John Robbins and we agreed that we would like to try veganism together. As I thumbed through the books, I came upon something completely bizarre, a book on raw food preparation called “RAW” by Juliano. This was a completely new idea to me but I was hooked! I kept reading and looking at the gorgeous food pictures and getting more and more excited. The book talked about having more energy and losing weight effortlessly. It talked about living longer and being able to enjoy those extra years feeling strong and vibrant! At 44 years old, I was ready to start turning back the clock.
A Life Change
My husband and I began our new vegan diet with an emphasis on raw foods. What would happen over the next 3 and a half years was a complete life change for me and a significant life change for my husband. We would weave in and out of raw, vegan, and standard american diets and ultimately when we ate cooked food it would reinforce how much better we felt when we ate raw. I sought out informa-

tion almost daily and went to a Raw Culinary Arts School. I gave up my corporate job to teach others everything I was learning and developed a new mission for my life, to teach people how to live happier, healthier lives by making better food choices.
A Better Life
Through change in diet alone I lost over 30 pounds. I have more energy, more mobility, better digestion and elimination, and I am in a much better mood! I don’t know when my period is coming because the awful symptoms have disappeared. I use very little skin moisturizer now. I used to break out in itchy little blisters on my hands if I didn’t keep a certain brand on my skin at all times, a condition that started in my twenties. When the doctor wouldn’t prescribe any more cortizone cream I found one brand of moisturizer that would keep it at bay, I had to use it for nearly 20 years. I prefer to be healed than to suppress symptoms. I now live better because I learned to eat better. A simple foundation on which to build a life. A vibrant life!
Living The Mission
Over the next 12 months I will be here to help you discover the promise of raw foods: a happier, healthier life. This article was about me, how and why I came to the raw food lifestyle and what it has done for me. The next 11 articles will be about you and how you can take back control of your health and your life. The steps that you can take immediately to start feeling better will be the topic of next months article. The power is yours!

wonder how I would feel if I were a medical doctor and found one after one of the medications I had over the years prescribed in good faith was pulled off the market as either ineffective, harmful or outright dangerous. Would it remind me when I listen to the long list of side effects during the many TV drug commercials that I once swore an oath to “FIRST DO NO HARM”? And would I wonder what effect the 15.6 billion presently spent on drug advertising each year might have on my patients? How would it effect me realizing that we in the USA have the highest ratio of medical doctors per capita in the world (1:365) and yet belong to the sickest nations on earth? Would I shudder if I saw meticulous documentation establishing that the almost 800,000 recorded doctor and drug related fatalities annually are with a wide margin the #1 cause of death in our country? Would it disturb me to realize that virtually 100% of all medical education is fi nanced by the pharmaceutical industry? How would it effect my sense for justice, honor and freedom when I had to watch super powerful interest groups ganging up against modalities like homeopathy, chiropractic, naturopathy, acupuncture, ayurveda and in general all natural therapies and supplements? Typically it was their power not facts that lead to the ban of the herb ephedra and it is again their power that now surpresses to inform the public that the courts established the FDA action was a gross error. Would I be shocked and angered to fi nd out if I discovered a natural, safe, effective and economical approach to guide my patients to superior health my medical board would not only threaten me with probation and even license withdrawal and actually do so? This just happened to Dr. Jennifer Daniels in the state of New York. By natural means she cured diabetes and other diseases that are “incurable” to medical doctors. For these miracles her license was revoked. Could I accept that we will only “win the war against cancer” and for that any disease if we prevented it in the fi rst place? Would I ask myself what roll I play in prevention? How would I feel if I realized that a healthy, wholesome lifestyle has greater impact on my patients than drugs? What would it tell me when more and more of my patients successfully turn towards natural healing methods. In fact 62% of all Americans already do. How would it grab me that among them are the most renown and successful colleagues of mine like Andrew Weil, Deepak Chopra, Julian Whitaker, James Balch, Carl Hammerschlag, Bernard Siegel, Christine Northrup… a long, long list. – I think my conscience would drive me to join them. Natural House-Cleaning Tips: Traditional house cleaning products
are extremely toxic and regular use is thought to increase the incidence of cancer. Protect your family and the environment by using non-toxic products for regular cleaning from “Organic Housekeeping” written by Ellen Sandbeck.
2. Do not use harmful moth balls to protect your clothes, they are poisonous to humans, not just moths! Instead, use fragrant, natural substitutes, such as cedar, rosemary or lavender. 3. popular addition to sweet and spicy dishes, ginger (zingiber offi cinale) is a spice native to China and India, with use documented as far back as 650 A.D. Referenced in the writings of Confucius, ginger has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries and has been popular in Western Europe since the 9th century. The medicinal benefits of ginger are endless and it is a must-have staple for every kitchen. Ginger acts as a wonderful digestive aid by increasing saliva and digestive fl uids. Not only can it alleviate indigestion, but it can also be very benefi cial in reducing nausea. Ginger benefi ts circulation and can impart clear, glowing skin from the inside out. Ginger can be effective in treating arthritis, as it is an anti-infl ammatory, as well as asthma and other respiratory problems. Ginger is also
touted as an aphrodisiac, possibly due to the circulation benefi ts. Ginger can be purchased as the whole root and then peeled for use. Or it can be sold as dried, powdered, pickled or crystallized. Crystallized ginger is the young, immature root boiled in sugar syrup and then air-dried and rolled in sugar, yielding a soft, spicy-sweet treat that is divine in baked goods, teas or even better, by itself. The English used to sprinkle ground ginger into their beer, hence the origination of ginger ale that we know today. Not only used in Asian cooking, ginger can be used to dress up a salad, is an excellent addition for baking, jams, and beverages. For an easy marinade, mix fresh, peeled ginger with minced garlic, soy sauce and sesame oil and a little Thai chili pepper. Use for meat, poultry, fi sh or stir-fry.

s a holistic veterinarian practicing integrative medicine, I have five goals for my patients. These are the same goals I have for readers of my books and columns, and for listeners of my radio show, “Dr. Shawn-The Natural Vet”. These goals are: 1. Prevent disease 2. Say NO to drugs whenever possible, using natural therapies instead 3. Heal your pet rather than simply treat a disease 4. Offer “hope for the hopeless” cases 5. Help owners save money on pet care In this article, I want to talk about goal number five: saving you money on pet care.

There are many ways to help decrease the cost of caring for your pet. Preventing disease (goal number one) is important: healthy pets cost less to care for than sick pets. Preventing disease, while never a guarantee, can most readily be accomplished by feeding a wholesome diet, using the proper supplements to support the pet’s organs and immune system, minimizing the use of vaccines (pets do NOT need annual immunizations,) and minimizing the use of conventional medications. Another great way to save a lot of money on the cost of pet care is by having someone else pay not only to prevent problems, but also when your pet is ill. Pet health insurance is an important factor in cutting the cost of caring for your pet. I’m a big fan of pet insurance for one reason: I’ve seen too many pets that did not receive proper care or were euthanized simply because of finances. We can do so much for pets, but this excellent care does come at a cost. According to a recent survey in DVM Newsmagazine, pet owners stated they would consider stopping treatment or even euthanasia if the cost of care was over $1500. Yet, spending a weekend at the local emergency clinic can easily cost this much and further care adds to the cost. It is estimated that 60 percent of dogs and cats will develop some sort of cancer in their lives, with the cost of care for these pets ranging from $3000 to over $10,000. Since most owners would not be able to afford this care, even though they would gladly choose this care for their

pets, insurance is an inexpensive “must-have” for most pet owners. Here are some other facts to consider: • Young dogs and cats have the highest risk of accidents and certain illnesses because they are so inquisitive by nature, and their immune system is still developing. Puppies and kittens get into almost everything, and often swallow objects while playing. Also, with their undeveloped immune systems, they are more prone to disease from viruses and bacteria. • As our pets age, they experience much of the same problems we face (pets age faster!), such as arthritis, cancer, heart disease, and kidney failure, to name a few. • Pets remain childlike forever; they are curious about everything around them, and are susceptible to injury from running, jumping and playing. Pets use their mouths like children use their hands, so swallowing objects or getting injured is common. There are several plans currently available. My favorites are the plans offered by Pet’s Best insurance. Their premiums are inexpensive (usually $5-30 per month depending upon the plan chosen,) and they have the highest reimbursement available (80 percent of any veterinary bill!) Age Regression Hypnosis Past Life Regression Hypnosis How Can it Help?
T
hese two types of hypnosis are similar in that they take you back to find the cause of your current blocks and to clear past traumas. Age Regression is an effective way to go back to a previous time in your current life to the incidents and traumas that may have left an indelible imprint on your personality. In this way you can finally deal with them and move on. Past Life Regression is Age Regression taken further back to a previous life. Reincarnation is a belief that we have lived many times before and that our spiritual development evolves with each lifetime. In some religions, such as Buddhism and Hinduism, reincarnation is part of the belief system. Millions of people in India and Asia believe in reincarnation but in America, it has started to gain acceptance only in the past 100 years. In an altered state, you can access your subconscious mind, which is similar to a vast video tape library. Everything you’ve ever experienced is stored there, along with all the associated sounds, smells and emotions. As a child you may have sat on your dad’s lap, feeling his love and having his attention, while he was smoking. Another memory might be when you were included in your big brother’s gathering of friends for the first time, and were admired because you began smoking with them. You felt “big” and self-assured. When these and many other incidents reinforced your link between smoking and a feeling of love and acceptance, it becomes very hard to stop. Understanding that link through Age Regression hypnosis and exploring the many ways of being loved and accepted today would help you to stop smoking. The subconscious mind remembers behaviors that we have used to protect ourselves and repeats them until we tell it not to. The problem is, we’ve consciously forgotten why we needed these behaviors, or that we ever “did without them.” By allowing our subconscious mind to surface, through hypnosis, we can re-frame our outmoded behaviors and realize that we don’t need them anymore. Past Life Regression adds the assumption that you have had past lives and that by going back to view one or more

of them you will understand your soul’s path in the past, present and future. This type of regression is used to discover causes of fears, repeated dreams, undesired tendencies, even “psychosomatic” pains. Some people have found their “aha” moments when seeing or reliving a past life incident. Current problems can be understood and dissolved by seeing where they originated. During a Past Life Regression you are guided to “be” a past personality, and experience or view the incidents from that era that have influenced you in your current life. In this way you resolve issues and integrate the experience into the present. The subconscious holds emotional memories from past traumas, which we are mostly not aware of. Through hypnosis you can choose to access that emotional memory and deal with it. You can get to a point where you see the big picture. You learn how you created the situation you are in, and can then see how to get out of it. We all want to change and move forward, clearing whatever is blocking us. We want to see our future path clearly. Age Regression and Past Life Regression are two methods to achieve that goal. June Milligan, M.Ed., CHT, Joyful Changes (775) 786-9111 See ad on page 20.

E C S S C m U e S a s n e to you? o d t a h W You will face obstacles, speed bumps and pot holes on your journey of success. You can make the choice to face them head on. You can go over, under, around or through the troubles in your path, or you can look at them through eyes of fear and choose not to take the next step. I believe fear (which is faith in reverse) is a major reason for not using our talents. Many people don’t understand that failure is an event and not a person, so they decide to play it safe and not do anything at all. Then they will not have failed, because they never tried. Make your choice to begin your journey by taking the very fi rst step:
What is success?
S
uccess is not a destination, it is a journey. It is the direction in which you are traveling. It is the process of becoming the person you were intended to be – the person you really want to be. And it’s directly related to having a balanced life. Most people think of success in relation to business and fi nancial wealth. However, we all know people who have tons of money and are still miserable. They have the fast cars, the big house, the right connections, but their family life is in shambles, their spiritual life is a big black void and happiness for these folks is always just out of reach. Now, I’ll concede that money is important (it’s reasonably close to oxygen on the “gotta have it” scale) but it’s only one measure of success, not THE measure can’t buy! of success. You Can Achieve Success Your are not truly successful until Now, just in case you quessuccess permeates your entire life. Real tion whether or not you really success comes when you experience at can experience success in all least some degree of success in every area areas of you life, let me just of life: career, family, fi nances, personal, tell you…Yes, you can! I know mental, physical and spiritual. And if you from personal experience and focus on improving the quality of your through the experiences of life, your standard of living will go up. the thousands of people I’ve With this approach to success, you will worked with who, despite amazing odds indeed have more of the things money against them, have achieved true success. can buy and all of the things that money It’s Up to YOU!
1. Develop A Healthy Self-Image You have to see yourself as the successful person you are choosing to be. Just as a successful golfer knows he must “see” the ball going in the cup before he takes a stroke or a successful salesperson “sees” the customer buying before m a k i n g t h e calls; you have to see your success before you actually achieve it. When you learn to see yourself as a success you will begin to talk, dress, walk and act like a success.
Success is not a destination, it is a journey.
The Elevator’s Out of Order The elevator to the top is, has been and always will be “out of order.” In order to get to the top you have to take each step-one at a time. Fortunately, they are directly in front of you so you know where they are, what they are and how many stairs you must climb before you reach the top!
28
www.HBMag.com
2. Develop Healthy Relationships Life is an echo. What you send out comes back. What you sow, you reap. What you give, you get. What you see in others exists in you. Regardless of who you are or what you do, if you are looking for the best way to reap the most reward in all areas of life, look for the best in every person and in every situation and adopt the Golden Rule as a way of life.
3. Develop Strong Goal Orientation Do you have a target or a goal for what
you want in life? Having goals allows you to develop a plan of action. You must have a goal because it’s just as diffi cult to reach a destination you don’t have, as it is to come back from a place you’ve never been. You have to know where you want to go in order to get there.
4. Develop the Right Mental Attitude Is your’s an alarm clock or an opportunity clock? The way you start each day, the attitude with which you take on each situation, is a determinant factor in your personal success. The right mental attitude toward your goals, work and life is critical. Part of developing the right mental attitude is to train your brain by feeding it good information.
5. Be Willing To Work Real security is truly an inside job. It can’t be given or provided; it must be earned. Whether you are an employee or are your own boss, to be a true success you must work for yourself. Work is the price we enjoy to travel the highways of success. Imagine a salesperson saying to her boss, “Make me the sales manager and I’ll really show you what I can do. It’s true I haven’t done much until now, but I need to be in charge in order to do my best work. So, just make me the boss and then watch me go.” Life doesn’t work
on credit. You must fi rst put something into life before you can expect to get anything out of it. Success takes work, patience and persistence. It takes willingness to get back up after you’ve been knocked down.
6. Have A Burning Desire to Excel The desire to be one’s best enables an individual to take whatever ability they have in what ever they are doing and utilize it to the maximum. Desire forces an individual to pull out all the stops and give it everything they’ve got. Each thing we do should be done to the best of our capabilities, whether we’re taking an examination, reporting for work or getting involved in an athletic event. We should give it our best and then some, because our yearning power is more important than our earning power.
How to measure Success I have learned over the years that people around the world identify eight factors with success. We all want to be happy, healthy, reasonably prosperous and secure, to have friends, peace of mind, good family relationships and hope for the future. Success is personal. You can’t compare your self with any other individual, or rely on anyone else to achieve success. It’s up to you to take each step up to the top. Remember, success is not a destination it is a journey.

I also described how that deficiency acts to increase your rate of aging, especially the feebleness and frailty that is so common. In this second installment I am going to discuss how to treat growth hormone deficiency once you find out you have it. In particular, I will focus on natural ways to boost sagging levels.
Boosting Sagging Growth Hormone Levels
Growth hormone levels will become deficient as you get older. That’s a certainty. What is not so certain is when you can expect that to happen. In my case it happened in my late forties, but in others it arrives much later or even earlier. Genetics is the major factor that determines when we become deficient, but there are also some lifestyle factors

that significantly effect growth hormone production.
Exercise
As remarkable as it may sound, simply exercising for as little as twenty minutes, will often double growth hormone levels for the day. This may not sound like much, but it is when you consider that the majority of the adult population has no regular exercise routine at all.
Sleep
Growth hormone is made in a part of the brain called the pituitary during stage3 and stage-4 sleep. These are the deepest stages of sleep. You know when someone is sleeping in these deeper levels of sleep because it becomes much harder to wake them up, even with fairly loud noises. Likewise, when you are suddenly awakened out of stage-4 sleep as I am occasionally for some medical emergency, you feel as though you are drugged for several minutes.
Diet
It has been well established that fasting for as little as ten hours will boost growth hormone levels enough to increase fat metabolism and improve blood sugar maintenance. In fact, short periods of abstinence are much more effective in this regard than longer periods. Because although prolonged fasting increases growth hormone production, it also results in decreased IGF-1 levels. And remember that virtually all of the positive effects of growth hormone come from IGF-1. Since not eating for several hours tends to have a favorable influence on growth hormone production, it should not be too surprising that frequently eating has the opposite effect. In this day of 24-hour availability of food it is easy to forget that our metabolisms developed in an environment in which food was not readily available. The practice of “grazing” during the day that has been promulgated by some nutritionists is not natural, and does not follow the logic of our evolved metabolisms. In this regard I advise people to avoid breakfast at least
4-5 days out of the week. This simple measure results in a 14-16 hour fasting period. This can substantially increase growth hormone output. The composition of the diet is also important. A diet high in protein increases both growth hormone and IGF-1 levels. Conversely, a diet high in carbohydrates, particularly the high glycemic carbohydrates, results in lower levels of both of these hormones.
Treating Growth Hormone Deficiency
I love growth hormone! I believe it is the single most powerful hormone we can use to combat the aging process and many of the diseases of aging. But buyer beware. There are a lot of internet venders out there selling so-called growth hormone sprays or creams. These useless remedies often sell for close to what the real thing costs. There is not one study published or otherwise that shows that any of these products actually increase IGF-1 levels. Several of my patients have tried them, and I have yet to see one do what the manufacturers claim. The reason is that growth hormone can’t be absorbed through the skin or by mouth. The molecule is too long and complex. It is almost identical to insulin. No one has been able to make an insulin preparation that can be taken any other way than by injection. And the same is true for growth hormone. The only effective way to replace deficient growth hormone levels is by injection. The injections are simple and easy. They are exactly like insulin injections. Any one can do it. One issue about full time growth hormone replacement is the cost. A course of daily replacement can cost in excess of $150 per month. However, I think the benefits of replacing it verses living out the second half of life without it make it very cost effective. Fortunately, for those with budgets that simply can’t afford full time use, the expense can be offset by just using it less often. Studies have shown that even when growth hormone is replaced for only one week out of a
month, there is still a significant positive overall effect.
What will I feel?
Probably nothing. When properly prescribed to replace deficient levels, growth hormone is not a “performance” hormone. I know that athletes take it for performance enhancement, but this requires using doses that are much greater than the body actually requires. This is dangerous, and often leads to serious side effects. When taken in doses that are tailor made to simply replace sagging levels, very few people actually feel an effect from the hormone within the first few months of use. A year after taking it, however, the bones will be stronger, sexual function and sleep improved, and strength, stamina, and overall well being increased. Even better, is the knowledge that the process of the tissue breakdown that causes the frailty and weakness so common to the 70’s and 80’s is being significantly slowed.
What Else Can Help?
Obviously, it would be a little ridiculous to give growth hormone to someone who is not at least covering the basics by getting sleep, routinely exercising, and maintaining a high protein, low carbohydrate diet. Only then does it make sense to obtain an IGF-1 level. If it turns out to be low, then growth hormone replacement should be considered. Additionally, especially in people who are younger than fifty, IGF-1 levels can be significantly raised by taking certain protein constituents called amino acids. This is best done on an empty stomach before bedtime. There are a number of amino acid combinations that you can purchase at the health-food store that have been shown to have this effect. The ones that seem to work the best are l-glutamine and ornithine keto-glutarate. Before bedtime I recommend 2,000 mg of l-glutamine and 1,800 mg of ornithine keto-glutarate along with 300 mg of niacin (vitamin B3) and 3 ounces of fruit juice. The niacin and the fruit juice enhance the effect of the amino acids. I have seen this particular combination literally double the production of IGF-1 many times. In summary, when it is used in combination with a comprehensive and total program to improve energy production, replacing deficient growth hormone lev-
els often provides the missing link needed for a successful program to slow aging and prevent disease. Until next time, remember that one of the most incredible mysteries of life is that your body was designed to heal itself. All you have to do is to help it. Far-Infrared Sauna f o r H e a l t h a n d D e t ox i f i c a t i o n

here are 3 major ways to detoxify the body of the harmful environmental poisons that have built up in the fat and in the liver. You can do it through diet (alkalizing, fasting, juicing). You can detoxify using mechanical modalities (alkalizing wraps, colon cleansing, chemical cheleation,), or you can use a sauna. However, for detoxifying, not all saunas are equally effective. The best sauna method for removing toxins from the body safely and without “die off” or adverse symptoms is with the far-infrared sauna. Among the total spectrum of solar rays emitted by the sun, far-infrared (FIR) waves are the safest and most benefi cial. These energy waves stimulate nerve endings in the skin and eyes which transmit this energy to the brain centers. These impulses stimulate the hypothalamus in the

higher brain center which has an important controlling effect on the production of neurochemicals. These neurochemicals control all quality of life processes such as blood pressure, moods, the aging process, sleep, pain, the immune system, etc. When using various sources of conventional heat (sun, wet/dry sauna, heat lamps, etc.) the outer surfaces of the body become far hotter than their interior areas. The interior heats up by conduction from the surface and does not heat the body evenly. By contrast “FIR” energy penetrates deeply and has a uniform heating effect. This stimulates the body to employ the process of “vasodilatation” (the increase in the size of blood vessels thereby increasing blood flow). This increased blood (from the penetrating the infrared energy) brings nutrients and oxygen to the tissues of the body and at the same time provides for the elimination of accumulated toxins. Far-Infrared systems have superior depth of penetration of the infrared energy. Tests have shown that humans absorb greater than 90% of the “FIR” energy waves that reach the skin. This energy penetrates body tissues to depths of up to 1.5 inches. In the “FIR” sauna, temperatures of 110-130 degrees ‘F’ (50 degrees ‘C’) are used compared with 180-235 degrees ‘F’ used by conventional saunas, which makes the “FIR” sauna a far safer system. Studies carried out in the U.S. compared the perspiration of individuals using a conventional sauna with those using a Far-Infrared thermal system. In the conventional sauna, the analyzed perspira-
tion consisted of 95-97% water compared with the “FIR” system where only 80-85% was water. The non-water makeup percentage consisted of cholesterol, fat-soluble toxins, toxic heavy metals (lead, mercury, etc.) sodium, ammonia, and uric acid. Since “FIR” systems are reported to help generate 2-3 times more perspiration than produced by conventional saunas, the implication is that while detoxifying the body, they may also produce increased calorie consumption. For over half a century experts have studied the relationship between ions (positive or negatively charged particles) and health. They all agree that in this day and age our health is greatly infl uenced by the quantity and quality of the ions contained in our environment and the nutrients which enter or infl uence our body. It is common knowledge among scientists that ions (especially the anion, which is a negatively charged ion) is an important factor in obtaining and maintaining optimal health. These negative ions are the most active form of ion and have a major infl uence on biological tissue (the body). An excellent source for anions is from a session in a “FIR” sauna while drinking Sango Coral Calcium in distilled water. The optimal health affect of these ions on the body can be achieved in 30 min. to 1 hour sessions. Biological he usual format when speaking about holistic or biological dentistry is centered on mercury fillings, root canals and fluoride. Dental materials are very important in the treatment of the teeth and the effects of total health. However, there is a whole area of research that correlates periodontal health (gums and bone) to systemic disease. The average person has 1500 billion bacteria in the mouth, comprised of 300 species of microbes living under the gums and along the roots of the teeth. When the microbes increase to proportions of high viral, bacterial and fungal loads they spill into the blood and travel to all parts of the body. In their New York Times best seller “You: The Owners Manual” Michael F. Roizen, M.D. and Mehmet C. Oz, M. D. state that “you need to combat gingivitis and periodontal disease which can cause inflammation in your body and aging of your immune and arterial systems.” A number of studies show a correlation between periodontal (gum) disease and systemic diseases such as cardiovascular (heart) disease, diabetes, sinus problems and multiple other concerns. So the head is really connected to the rest of the body! It has been suggested that all diseases start orally and the challenged immune system shows up as problems in the mouth. When we are born the cells in the body are non-pathogenic. The toll that is placed on these cells through toxins, lack of exercise, life style choices, acidic blood environment, diet and a weakened immune system pushes these microbes to
pathogenic forms causing tumors, cancer and other maladies. A simple scheme suggests a transition from normal cells to viral forms and a state of accumulation with urogenital tract diseases, colitis, and lymphatism. The next form would be bacterial and produce a state of inflammation with disease such as otitis, acne, laryngitis, pulmonary diseases, asthma, prostate adenoma, etc. The following stage would be fungal and a degenerative stage producing anemia, embolism, diabetic gangrene, glaucoma, varicose veins and so on. The immune system at this point would be under heavy stress. It has been said that the mouth is the gateway to the immune system and by treating the mouth you can treat the entire body. The American Dental Association has estimated that 80% of American adults have periodontal disease, including gingivitis. Also patients with diabetes have twice the chance for heart attack and three times chance for stroke. The Journal of Periodontalogy demonstrates clearly that infections in the teeth and gums have been linked to many diseases. Future articles will deal with the treatment reversing the onslaught of oral infections. Zeny N. Ocean, D.D.S. , Zeny N. The Ups and Downs of Mood Disorders response at all to the medications. In addition, many people suffer adverse reactions to antidepressants, such as weight gain, nausea, headaches, dizziness, drowsiness and sexual problems. Decreasing responses to medications and increasing occurrences of side effects have more and more people turning to alternative therapies for support. Natural approaches to anxiety and depression include identifying the underlying chemical imbalances and establishing a restorative program to level out the ups and downs of moods disorders.
Mood Disorders and Neurotransmitters
H
ave you been diagnosed with depression? Do you often feel anxious or worried? Are you easily angered or frustrated? Do you have difficulty dealing with stress? Have you been told you’re too sensitive? Mood disorders are on the rise within the U.S. population. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), 40 million adults in the U.S. suffer from anxiety disorders and one in ten adults experiences depression each year. Antidepressant medications are commonly recommended in conventional practices for the management of anxiety and depression. However, there is a portion of the population taking antidepressants that only have a partial response or no

Neurotransmitters play a key role in mood regulation. Neurotransmitters are molecules that transmit messages between nerve cells. They are used to communicate information in the brain, organs and tissues. When we are sufficient in neurotransmitters we feel balanced mentally and emotionally. When our neurotransmitters become deficient or excessive we begin to experience the signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety. The neurotransmitters that commonly influence how we feel include: the inhibitory neurotransmitters serotonin and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) and the excitatory neurotransmitters epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine. For example, adequate levels of serotonin evoke feelings of confidence as well as a positive, easy going nature. But when this
neurotransmitter’s levels fall, feelings of negativity, irritability and worry set in and sleep quality diminishes. High levels of the excitatory neurotransmitters, epinephrine and norepinephrine, result in energized, alert and upbeat feelings, whereas low levels can cause decreased motivation and lethargy. The key to establishing and maintaining mental and emotional well-being is balancing the inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitters. When imbalances do occur they are often the result of poor diet, chronic stress, hormone imbalances, long-term illness, genetics or exposure to nervous system toxins.
Beginning a Restorative Program
A thorough evaluation of current signs and symptoms and a detailed health history in addition to mood-type questionnaires, hormone assessments and neurotransmitter testing are useful for identifying specific hormone and neurotransmitter imbalances contributing to mood disorders. In addition to promoting mental and emotional stability, natural remedies are aimed at enhancing the body’s ability to deal with stress, increasing energy levels and improving sleep patterns.
Diet
A diet high in protein is important for providing the body with amino ac-
ids. Amino acids are the building blocks required for making the different neurotransmitters. Eggs, poultry, fi sh, lamb, beef and dairy products are examples of high protein foods important for balancing brain chemistry. Amino acid therapy in the form of supplements may also be necessary to target specifi c neurotransmitter deficiencies. In addition, a serving of protein at each meal helps stabilize blood sugar levels. When blood sugar levels rise significantly or fall too low, due to high carbohydrate meals or skipping meals, moods are greatly affected. It is also important to eliminate the foods that contribute to bad moods. These foods include refi ned sugars and fl ours, artifi cial sweeteners, food additives and caffeine, which are all over stimulating to the nervous system. Eliminating the foods that your body is sensitive or allergic to will also help reverse bad moods.
Vitamins and Minerals
Vitamins and minerals are important cofactors in the synthesis of neurotransmitters. Without available B vitamins and magnesium the biochemical reactions that change an amino acid into a neurotransmitter can not occur. Vitamin B6 in particular is needed for making GABA, serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine in the body. In addition to playing a key role in neurotransmitter synthesis, B vitamins are important for nerve development and health, hormone production, blood sugar metabolism, energy regulation, stress management and premenstrual syndrome relief. Magnesium is a calming mineral also involved in a number of cellular processes important in nerve function. Magnesium defi ciency is a common problem in such conditions as chronic stress, depression, tension, attention defi cit disorder and poor memory.
Botanical Medicine
Nervine botanicals are plant medicines that improve nutrition and function to the nervous system. St. John’s Wort is an effective herb for relieving signs and symptoms of mild depression. It has been shown to increase the amount and effi cacy of serotonin in the brain. The botanical, Valerian, stimulates the brain to release the neurotransmitter GABA. It helps the body to relax and offers relief from stress. Valerian can also be used to promote sleep. The reasons behind the increasing rates of anxiety and
depression in our society are not clearly defi ned. We can not always change the stressors in our lives, but we can adapt to a healthier lifestyle to help support our moods. Through proper counseling and education we can implement diet and exercise plans and natural therapies that improve our ability to cope with stress and decrease our susceptibility to moods of anxiety and depression. The health suggestions listed above are only examples of the natural therapies available. Natural remedies can increase or decrease the effectiveness of medications and should be recommended with care to prevent interactions. hopes to see his vineyard flourish throughout his lifetime and has no plans to replant, allowing the character of the vines to embolden as it matures. Biodynamic growing is also incorporated into Frog’s Leap farming practices. Biodynamics, rooted in homeopathy, uses lunar cycles and focuses on natural rhythms of the entire farming system. John takes a practical approach to the complicated practice by using common sense, for instance, his composting methods are in line with Biodynamic practices. “Organic is the path to make our wines better and higher quality,” John said “Not only better for our bodies, but our business and environment.” Standing out from commonplace “green washing”, Frog’s Leap is authentically organic, and congruous with its maverickstyle, the vineyard also functions as an impressive sustainable farm. Frog’s Leap’s Vineyard House is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, meaning every material gone into construction of the charming facility, complete with a wrap-around porch, is recycled. The building uses geothermal heating and low-emitting, non-toxic fabrics and paints. “The house is heated, cooled and lit without a single fossil fuel,” John said. John’s first endeavor in green-building began with his immense two-story warehouse with all of the wood recycled from a condemned bridge that he purchased. An organic garden,
grown privately for employees and family, flourishes behind the Vineyard House. Frog’s Leap utilizes all of the recycling services available to farms, an unfortunate rarity in the Napa Valley. “The first step is to conserve,” John said “The second is to produce.” Frog’s Leap Vineyard is 100 percent solar-powered by 1020 photovoltaic panels placed on half an acre, providing enough electricity to power 150 homes. The environmental preservation is impressive, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1600 tons, the equivalent of planting 440-acres of trees. Any energy not used by the winery is sold back to the power company, effectively producing energy for others. It is not just the organic wines, nor the green-buildings that make Frog’s Leap an exceptional vineyard, but John also practices “employee sustainability”. Obtaining good labor in the winemaking industry can be a significant challenge, because of seasonal migrant workers and fear of dangerous pesticide use. John is proactively working to effect change by offering shared-labor with other vineyards in the area. Sharing the labor force permits winemakers like John Williams to be able to provide insurance benefits and steady employment. Through his effort, workers are able to reside in the area, fostering loyalty and devotion, which bestows success on the vineyard. “Farming, winemaking and having a family business means to have a longer view.” John said. And John is not stopping at his own property line, his vision extends to the local, as well as the global picture. John is a catalyst for change in the Napa region he calls home and is calling all fellow vineyard owners to follow suit. Recently he hosted a conference on organic vineyards and sustainable farming, in which 120 farmers attended. “Green-washing” may be a trend, but John is upbeat about the process and sees it as “one step at a time”. “The valley is an ecosystem, not just a farm,” John said. “I want neighbors to join in.” Through good stewardship and independent style, Frog’s Leap continues to provide the Napa Valley wine community with a positive future for generations of enjoyment to come. pH Balance, The Cause of Disease H
ave you ever wondered if many of the diseases raging through our society have a common cause? Many doctors, herbalists and nutritionists believe that the explanation may come down to three words: Acid Alkaline Imbalance. Over-acidity, which is very common today, can become a dangerous condition that weakens all body systems. It gives rise to an internal environment conducive to disease, as opposed to a pH-balanced environment which allows normal body function necessary for the body to resist disease. A healthy body maintains adequate alkaline reserves to meet emergency demands. When access acids must be neutralized our alkaline reserves are depleted leaving the body in a weakened condition. The concept of acid alkaline imbalance as the cause of disease is not new. In 1933 a New York doctor named William Howard Hay, M.D., published a ground-breaking book, A New Health Era in which he maintains that all disease is caused by autotoxication (or “self-poisoning) due to acid accumulation in the body: Now we depart from health in just the proportion to which we have allowed our alkalies to be dissipated by introduction of acid-forming food in too great amount... It may seem strange to say that all disease is the same thing, no matter what its myriad modes of expression, but it is verily so. More recently, in his remarkable book Alkalize or Die, Dr. Theodore A. Baroody, N.D., D.C, Ph.D., says essentially the same thing: The countless names of illnesses do not really matter. What does matter is that they all come from the same root cause... too much tissue acid waste in the body!
(or acid-base) ratio called the pH which is a balance between positively charges ions (acid-forming) and negatively charged ions (alkaline-forming.) The body continually strives to balance pH. When this balance is compromised many problems can occur.
pH and Bone Loss:
A recent seven-year study conducted at
the University of California, San Francisco, on 9,000 women showed that those who have chronic acidosis are at greater risk for bone loss than those who have normal pH levels. The scientists who carried out this experiment believe that many of the hip fractures prevalent among middleaged women are connected to high acidity caused by a diet rich in animal foods and low in vegetables. This is because the body borrows calcium from the bones in order to balance pH. — American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Understanding pH pH (potential of hydrogen) is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. It is measured on a scale of 0 to 1 —the lower the pH the more acidic the solution, the higher the pH the more alkaline (or base) the solution. When a solution is neither acid nor alkaline it has a pH of 7 which is neutral. Water is the most abundant compound in the human body, comprising 70% of the body. The body has an acid-alkaline
