Free Far Infrared Sauna Session with First Visit My name is Todd Patterson. I had Gulf War Syndrome and was plagued with many symptoms. I had no energy, was pale and swollen, and in terrible pain. I had often considered ending my life because the pain was unbearable. Janet and I have been friends for a while. She had been trying to get me to Reno for quite some time to detox my body. Finally convinced, I arrived at the Circle of Life Spa for my first of many wraps, sauna sessions, and massages. I had some difficult and emotional periods as my body detoxed. Janet worked on changing my diet to encourage an alkaline environment which promotes health and healing. Janet and Carla were right there supporting me through it all. ďż˝ After two weeks, the three of us stood in the foyer of the spa hugging and crying as I prepared to go home, a healthy man. I never thought I would be pain free, yet here I stood feeling amazing. My swelling was gone and I looked vibrant because I had color and energy. Most importantly, I no longer felt pain. I was a vision of health that none of us had seen in quite a while. Today, my wife and I are adopting a baby girl from China. I can be the father I want to be because I am healthy. I thank Janet and Carla for giving so much of themselves to help me heal.

Dear Readers, Have you ever asked yourself, how grateful am I? I mean really grateful not just, “oh yeah, I am so glad I have this and that, but deep down grateful? Are you grateful for where you live, the people in your life, not only your family and friends but also the people to whom you spend your working hours? I feel very grateful to know and work with the staff at Healthy Beginnings Magazine they are considerate, intelligent and open minded. Open minded in that they truly think outside of the box, “the box” being what our environment breeds us to believe is true for all. Healthy Beginnings Magazine was created to educate on the many topics that support living a natural and healthy lifestyle. H B was not designed to get you to think our way or to look like us. It is my true belief that each human being has value, each person you encounter during your day can teach you something. Even if it is not a situation that is happy and wonderful, there is always a lesson to be learned. Healthy Beginnings will strive to bring you un-censored information because we believe you are intelligent and quite capable to decipher what will be of benefit to you emotionally, physically and environmentally. As my father once said to me “Dawn, people will give you advice all day long. Take what you need and let the other go!” Thank you, Dad. Those were powerful words of wisdom, because in those words you taught me to think for myself. I love you. I guess what giving thanks or Thanksgiving means to me is a recounting or looking back at all the exceptional people in my life that brought me to where I am today. And at the same time, who helped me be accountable for my actions in this wondrous journey we call life. Until Next month… Best in Health and Happiness,
Dawn M. Gowery

Our Cover Pomegranate – the bejeweled fruit – beautiful, edible rubies; shimmering shapes, glowing nutrients; tart, sweet and intensely exotic. An antioxidantrich “superfruit.” Thanksgiving coincides with the beginning of pomegranate season. It is one of the oldest fruits known. As a symbol of abundance, fertility, longevity and eternal life, the fruit has a long history of cultural and religious rites, legend and lore. It is depicted in ancient art, bas relief and sculpture and dried remnants have been found dating back to 1000 BC. The pomegranate is native to a wide region, from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran to the Himalayas in northern India; it has been cultivated over the whole Mediterranean region, the Middle East and the Caucasus since ancient times. Today it is also grown in Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America, California and Arizona, primarily for its juice. The fruit is a powerful source of antioxidants; its abundant polyphenols make it an excellent free-radical scavenger. Animal and human studies have shown pomegranate’s potent effects against certain cancers, heart disease and high blood pressure; other studies suggest it has efficacy against diabetes and lymphoma, and new studies are underway. Pomegranate is a staple in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking. It used widely as a garnish by Western chefs because of its colorful beauty and tangy flavor. New ways to use the fruit develop daily, especially as its exceptional health benefits are studied and confirmed. Brain Health:
Tips & Tricks By Lauren Birtwhistle
Procrastinating? Distracted? Disorganized?
Many adults suffer from these symptoms. Busy schedules can jumble your brain and not having the proper daily routine can make you more distracted. Don’t fret; there are several natural ways to get you refocused.
1.
Omega-3 fatty acids are something that most adults do not have enough of. • Omega-3 is necessary to allow the nerves in the brain to connect quickly. • Studies have shown that a healthy intake of omega-3 will improve concentration and focus. Fish oil is full of omega-3. • Taking 2-4 1,000 mg. capsules of high quality fish oil every day will most likely help you stay on track.
2. In addition to taking a fish oil supplement, combining it with
a daily dose of Zinc is a good idea. • Only 50% of adults obtain the recommended daily amount. • Zinc is a crucial mineral for your brain health and helps your body to absorb omega-3. • Studies have show that Zinc reduces impulsiveness. • Taking 15 mg-30 mg daily may help you to stick to your schedule and keep focused.
3. Need help remembering your schedule?
• Taking 150 mg-200 mg of bacopa twice daily has been shown to help people learn and retain information more easily. • Bacopa helps you by process visual information quicker and consolidate new information into memory more effectively.
4. Do not underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep. • Skimping on sleep impairs learning, concentration, alertness and planning. • If you are awake for 21 hours straight or combine 2 or 3 days of early mornings and late nights, your brain functions at the level of someone who is legally drunk. 5. Finally, be sure to include physical exercise in your routine. • Physical activity promotes the growth of new brain cells. • Even slight physical activity improves the brain. • Simply getting up and walking for about 30 minutes has shown to improve a person’s ability to learn, concentrate and abstract reasoning. Taylor Donovan Chiropractor
By Ffjorren Zolfaghar
T
aylor Donovan is a Chiropractor who has lived in Reno for two years, having moved here from the southern California desert town of Joshua Tree. He has practiced chiropractic medicine and healing for 4 years. His background includes strong basic science (biochemistry and molecular biology) and a ton of related holistic healing experience and training. At this point, you may already think you know who he is, or at least his “type.” You might be telling yourself: hmmm, another holistic bone cracker joining the ranks… Sadly, this is what humans do. Decide in advance about things, with little or no direct knowledge: Our brain pigeonholes our experiences and uses them to form new judgments, rather than utilizing the new information available to us each moment. However, you’ll find that Dr. Donovan doesn’t fit in a pigeonhole. He is far different from the experiences most of us are familiar with. Yes, he’s a chiropractor, but the areas of his study and the work he undertook after college clearly affect his personal values and the way he practices. The difference is most palpable in a oneon-one experience with Taylor Donovan the person, not Taylor Donovan, DC. Let me explain. Chiropractic care is about “reconnecting the mind with the body by ensuring that the nerves are communicating information properly to the muscles and internal organs,” Taylor said. He believes that it is vital to teach our body to self regulate from the inside out. Your body will start “falling
apart” at some point in your life. Therefore, it’s truly imperative for a person to find a practice that helps delay the body’s natural decaying process. Taylor has studied multiple styles of medicine, along with long living indigenous cultures to find a practice in which healing and wellness were key. Taylor studied biochemistry and molecular biology during the first four years of college. He was amazed at the very miracle that lies within one microscopic cell and the importance of intercellular communication. He minored in anthropology, focusing on medicinal anthropology. He was and is intrigued by the way a community ebbs and flows, together. He researched the various healing modalities that have existed in our world over time. Most importantly, he wanted to know which practices were essential in creating a healthy and prosperous environment for everyone involved. He took this knowledge and curiosity to the wilderness with an organization that helps troubled teens find a new path to a better life. Taylor worked with this group for 5 years in Idaho. He feels that bringing people into nature in a community-oriented setting, truly teaches a person how to find health, on many levels. Taylor wanted to focus on the actual therapy behind this concept, which took him to West Virginia. He worked as an adolescent therapist for a boarding school for two years. This was not the dark blue blazer and expensive dormitory type of school -- more like 28 days in the woods and village style living. Yes, they had 3 months of a “boarding school” existence at the end of their stay, but the majority of therapy came from their experience with nature and with each other. Taylor was in charge of the kids’ one and a half month
experience in “the village.” He created programs that taught them the impact that their individual actions had on the entire village community. After his stint in West Virginia, Taylor knew that he wanted to continue helping people find health, but in a different capacity. He went on to study the world of chiropractic medicine. He obtained his doctor of chiropractic credentials in 2004 from The Los Angeles College of Chiropractic. Taylor does not limit his healing work to simple chiropractic adjustments. He incorporates yoga poses, health classes, wellness assessments and nutritional supplements if he deems they are needed. He is currently taking yoga teacher training classes and would like to center his attention on the relationship between chiropractic and yoga. Taylor said that this connection might “define the rest of my career.” In his free time, Taylor enjoys biking, backpacking, gardening and reading and writing poetry. He seems most passionate about the sport “Ultimate Frisbee” and happens to be the captain of his team. Just for the record, it is not like frisbee golf, at all. What would Mr. Donovan be doing if he were not practicing in the field of chiropractic care? Taylor said, “I would most likely be living on a tropical coastal paradise with all of the incredible friends that I’ve shared my life with, practicing permaculture, performance arts, and mindful relationship work.” “Really though, my mission in these years is to serve the causes of vibrant sustainable health practices in community. Reno is my chosen playing field.” Find ad on page 27.

U.S. Farmers Can Barely Keep Up With Demand For
Organic Produce
By David Gutierrez
T
he demand for organic food in the United States outstrips the supply, according to industry groups such as the Organic Trade Association (OTA) and Organic Farming Research Foundation. This means that imports of organic food are rising, but industry leaders want the U.S. government to take steps to help boost domestic production.
To be certified as organic, food must be grown without the use of any synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, antibiotics, or genetically modified crops or animals. In addition, a field must be free of chemicals for three years before any crops grown there can be certified as organic. The lower profits during those three years prevents many farmers from making the switch.

“The conversion process may be quite daunting,” the OTA says. The group says that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides too little guidance for farmers wanting to switch to organic production, and is calling for measures to strengthen the industry and allay farmers’ fears through more money for research, strengthened crop insurance for organic farms, and expert advice for growers. According to Kathie Arnold of the National Organic Coalition, the government should “provide financial and technical support” to farmers during their threeyear transition period. According to the USDA, there are 8,500 organic farmers in the United States working approximately four million acres of crop and pasture land. The OTA says that domestic production is growing, but not as fast as demand. “In the United States, the buzz about organic has become a steady hum,” said OTA board member Lynn Clarkson before a congressional hearing on the topic. “Organic foods are increasingly sold in mainstream retail establishments, which together represent roughly 46 percent of sales.” The OTA told Congress that sales of organic food amounted to about $16 billion dollars in the United States in 2006, or 3 percent of domestic food spending. Sales are growing at a rate of up to 20 percent a year. The Organic Consumers Association (www.OrganicConsumers.org) is playing a key role in promoting honest, ethical organic standards and is currently engaged in a battle over organic standards with at least one large “organic” milk producer whose milk is not really organic, says the OCA. Bioidentical Hormones: Hype or Healthy? By M. Kelly Shanahan, MD, FACOG
O
ver the past few years, “bioidentical” has been the buzzword of hormone replacement therapy; a Google search for “bioidentical hormones” yields 88,700 hits! But are bioidentical hormones a panacea, or it is all hype? Like most things, the truth lies somewhere in between. What is a bioidentical hormone anyway? Many people use the term interchangeably with “natural”, implying that it is better than synthetic. All “bioidentical” means is that the hormone is chemically and molecularly the same as that produced in the body. All bioidentical hormones today are made in a laboratory – synthesized – from plant sources, usually soy. A common misconception about bioidentical hormones is that they are safer than synthetic hormones. While it is true that some animal studies have shown that certain bioidentical estrogens, specifically estriol, may decrease the risk of breast cancer, there are no large, well controlled studies of the same in humans. Because the FDA will not allow bioidentical hormones to be patented (since they are chemically and molecularly the same as the hormones our bodies produce), there are very few studies done; drug companies do studies in hopes of recouping the investment in future sales of a hot new drug that they patented. Until the government or academia fund a large trial, bioidentical hormones cannot be considered safer than synthetic. That said, there are advantages to bioidentical hormones. Because they are chemically the same as what our bodies produce, side effects are often milder. Bioidentical progesterone (e.g., Prome-
trium™), for example, does not produce the moodiness often associated with synthetic progestins like medroxyprogesterone acetate (Provera™). Compounded bioidentical hormones can be made in any dose and any combination, allowing you and your doctor to customize the prescription to fit you and your unique needs. Compounded medications, however, are not regulated by the FDA and it is imperative to use a reputable compounding pharmacy to ensure safety. Another common misconception is that bioidentical hormones are only available from compounding pharmacies. In fact, most of the estrogens widely prescribed today and made by big drug companies are bioidentical. Estrace™, Climara™, Menostar™, Vivelle™, Estrasorb™, Estrogel™ to name a few. Prometrium™ is, however, the only FDA approved bioidentical progesterone. There are two main advantages to using FDA approved medications: 1) quality control and 2) insurance coverage. The bottom line about hormones – bioidentical or not – is that the decision to use hormone therapy is one that should be made after careful consideration of both risks and benefits. You and your doctor need to discuss the specific symptoms you are experiencing and review your unique personal and family medical history to decide what is best for you. Reference: 1. Butt Out Now?
Why
By June Milligan, M.Ed., CHt
I
t’s always been a good thing to quit smoking, but why is it emphasized so much NOW? Because the ingredients in cigarettes have changed so much. They may look the same, but they’re most definitely not that cigarette of old. The cigarette grandpa smoked is long gone and has been replaced by a toxic brew referred to, by the cigarette companies themselves, as a “nicotine delivery device.”
Cigarette smoke now contains over 4800 chemicals.
Dr. Tony George of Yale University explains that cigarette smoke now contains over 4800 chemicals, including forty-three known cancer-
12
November 2007
causing compounds and over 400 other toxins. These include nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide, as well as formaldehyde, ammonia, cyanide, arsenic and DDT. Very few of these additives were used before 1970. The “new” chemicals are there to increase nicotine delivery effectiveness and to reduce harshness. However, they have a devastating effect on the human body. The irony is that many of the poisons found in cigarette smoke are strictly regulated by federal laws…laws which shamefully exempt tobacco products. So you can see that the tobacco industry lobbyists have been busy for many decades, and they weren’t lobbying Congress for your benefit. If you
tried to get away with dumping these additives on land anywhere, -you’d be arrested. And yet it’s okay for you to smoke them? Most of the chemicals inhaled in cigarette smoke stay in the lungs. The more you inhale, the greater the damage to your lungs. A chemical very similar to rocket fuel is infused into the paper to help keep the tip of the cigarette burning at an extremely hot temperature. This allows the nicotine in tobacco to turn into a vapor so your lungs can absorb it easily.
The ammonia is added to raise the dose of nicotine. By adding ammonia to cigarettes, nicotine in its vapor form can be absorbed by the lungs more quickly. This resembles what happens while smoking crack…allowing the brain to get a higher dose with each puff. A total list of all the additives in a cigarette is difficult to find even though the companies provided lists Tobacco have of ingredients to the Feds for more annually than a decade. kills more However, it’s against the people than law for govofalcohol, AIDS, ernment ficials to car accidents, release that information illegal drugs, to the public. Is it any murders and wonder that public confisuicides – dence in Congress now stands combined. at 16%? Let’s look at how much of these poisons are in a cigarette. Dr. Cheryl Oncken of the Yale University School of Medicine explains that in 1989 millions of cases of imported fruit were banned because a small amount of cyanide was found in two grapes. There’s THIRTYTHREE times more cyanide in a single cigarette than there was in those two grapes. In 1990, 72 million bottles of a popular mineral water were recalled because of small traces of benzene. Yet you’d have to drink 169 BOTTLES of that water in order to get the amount of benzene you inhale from only one pack of cigarettes. A study conducted by the Massachusetts Department of Health tested a hundred brands of cigarettes and discovered an average ten percent increase in cigarette nicotine levels between 1998 and 2004. This was not an accident. Tobacco
companies were hoping to increase addiction by increasing the nicotine level. This happened gradually, but Americans are finally recognizing cigarettes for what they are. The result of inhaling this witch’s brew of toxic chemicals is to deteriorate and contaminate every organ and tissue with which it comes in contact, to lessen vitality, to benumb the senses, to shorten life, to kill. More chemicals were added to make it possible for us to tolerate the toxins in the smoke, in other words, to keep us smoking more. They were added without regard to health and with the intent to keep us addicted. As the tobacco industry saying goes, “An addicted customer is a customer for life.” And they should add, “no matter how short that life is.” Tobacco use is the single most preventable health problem facing us today – in fact, tobacco annually kills more people than alcohol, AIDS, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders and suicides – COMBINED. Patrick Reynolds, son of the owner of R.J. Reynolds Company (makers of Camel and Winston) is one of America’s most outspoken critics of tobacco. He gives talks to high schools all over the country explaining how his father and older brother died of tobacco use, and why you should never start smoking. But if you did, stop today. November is the Great American Smokeout month. November 15th is the day when millions of Americans will stop smoking for one day and because of that, many will decide to quit permanently. Americans have learned the hard way about the dangers of smoking, so tobacco use is gradually decreasing here in the U.S. But in order to keep their sales high, the American tobacco companies are targeting the rest of the world. Anyone traveling across Russia, India, Southeast Asia, Africa or Eastern Europe can see giant billboards advertising American made cigarettes. For tobacco companies, the bottom line is far more important than the deadly effects, no matter where you live in the world. So Butt Out today.

Natural Solutions: Beat the Pain of Burns Cool it. As quickly as possible, run cold water over minor
burns, or use an ice pack. Place a few ice cubes in a plastic bag wrapped in a cloth (or use a commercial cold pack). Apply for 20 minutes, then wait 10 minutes before applying again. Flushing with cool water is especially important for chemical burns caused by drain, oven and toilet cleaners. Flush the area with cool water continuously for 15 to 30 minutes. If the chemical container is available, read and follow the first-aid instructions on the label.
Pacify the pain.
Doctors recommend aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil). A natural alternative is white willow bark (Salix spp.), which contains pain-relieving compounds similar to aspirin. Commission E endorses white willow bark for treatment of pain. For a decoction, soak 1 teaspoon of powdered bark per cup of cold water for eight hours. Strain. Drink up to 3 cups a day with honey and/or lemon. If you’re sensitive to aspirin, do not use willow — the herb may upset your stomach.
Apply aloe. Aloe first came to modern medical atten-
tion in the 1930s, with a medical journal report that the herb helped heal burns inflicted by radiation treatments. In 1995, Thai researchers treated 27 people with second-degree burns with either aloe gel or petroleum jelly under gauze dressings. The average time to healing in the petroleum jelly group was more than 18 days. In the aloe group, it was about 11 days.
Spread on honey. Indian researchers treated burn victims using either a standard dressing or one soaked with honey. The honey group’s burns healed twice as quickly (9 days vs 18 days). Lavender: Herbalists and aromatherapists Kathi Keville and Mindy Green, co-authors of Aromatherapy: A Complete Guide to the Healing Art, suggest placing a few drops of lavender oil on burns or mixing three drops each of lavender oil, tea tree oil, chamomile oil and calendula oil, and applying the mixture to the burn. Don’t break blisters. When burns cause blisters, it’s tempting to pop them, but doing so risks infection. If blisters break on their own, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water, then cover with gauze soaked with honey, aloe, lavender oil or tea tree oil. Wash the broken blister and change the bandage and dressing once a day. From Herbal First Aid by Michael Castleman, Mother Earth News February/March 2005

The Healthy Adventurer Biking across Australia, South to North Part 4: In Port Augusta, it was time to stock up with groceries. Ahead of me lay a desolate terrain devoid of people. 177 km further on was Pimba, a combination of service station, restaurant, convenience store and some cabins. About 40 km before I reached this metropolis, I was stopped by a highway patrol cruiser. Trouble? Well, sort of. I was told that the law in Australia required bike riders to wear a helmet. I never have worn one. Instead of arguing, that the baseball cap, in my opinion, was more advantageous, I agreed to buy one at the next opportunity. Great! He seemed satisfied with that and let me go. Shortly beyond Pimba, I met the first other bike rider I had encountered on the trip, a young man from Japan. We shook hands and took pictures of each other. I hope I did not discourage him by telling him that I averaged over 170 km per day, while he barely made 100 km. At this time I had the wind in my favor. Also, his luggage weighed 10 times more than mine, I am sure.. Though it was mostly sunny, I experienced the occasional downpour. The temperature changed greatly many times a day. At times I wore all the clothes I had. A few hours later I dressed down to shorts and T-shirt. At home, just before leaving on this trip, we had seen a movie highlighting some of the dangers of Australia: crocodiles, highly poisonous snakes and spiders. The only animals that bothered me so far were the very pesky flies. Though small, they were very aggressive. Just imagine how fast their little wings had to move to catch me when I was going 20 km/h or more. Victory for them when I slowed down! They tickled immensely and could not just be shaken away. When I wiped them off my face they switched to the ears and neck. When I tried to reach them there, they instantly returned to my face. In spite of such annoyances, this was a great day. I saw three emus and later three wallabies. The graceful emus are remarkable birds. Elsewhere they are raised commercially for their pretty plumage and protein rich meat. Their odorless fat is of high therapeutic value. It is an anti-inflammatory that promotes healing. The Australian Department of Health has classified emu oil as a pharmaceutical aid and has it listed on their “Therapeutic Registry”. At Everlasting Health we have very successfully suggested it for psoriasis, acne, eczema, arthritis, sore muscles, dry skin, cold sores, rosacea, and sport injuries and to counteract wrinkles and puffiness. It was wonderful to see the emu in the wild. I love what I am doing! Peace, joy and health! - Hans Next: The largest opal mines in the world
Pomegranate Juice
Non-Toxic & PH Balanced
DEODORANT
Shown to Halt
Alzheimer’s Disease Progression in Mice
By Jessica Fraser
A
recent animal study published in December 2006 in the Neurobiology of Disease journal found that dietary intake of antioxidant-rich pomegranate juice may reduce the buildup of harmful proteins associated with Alzheimer’s disease, by half. Researchers from Loma Linda University in California believe that Alzheimer’s may be caused by the buildup of plaque from deposits associated with brain cell death due to oxidation, called beta-amyloid deposits. Pomegranate juice, which is high in antioxidant polyphenols, may offer protection against the oxidative stress that causes beta-amyloid deposits. The researchers studied two groups of transgenic mice that had been genetically engineered to express a protein that eventually leads to Alzheimer’s disease. The mice – aged between six and 12.5 months – were split into two groups: The first group’s diet was supplemented with plain water, and the second group’s diet was supplemented with diluted pomegranate juice concentrate. The concentrate was diluted to resemble the strength of commercially sold pomegranate juices. The researchers then tested the two groups’ cognitive function by subjecting the mice to a water maze, which required the animals to swim various distances to find a submerged platform. The group given pomegranate juice negotiated the maze 35 percent faster than the water group, and also swam a more direct path
to find the submerged platform compared to the water group. The researchers then examined the amount of beta-amyloid deposits in the brain cortex of the mice, and found that the group supplemented with pomegranate juice had 50 percent less of the deposits than the non-supplemented mice. “This study is the first to show beneficial effects (both behavioral and neuropathological) of pomegranate juice in an animal model of (Alzheimer’s disease),” wrote lead researcher Richard Hartman. Hartman and his research team wrote that because pomegranate juice is so rich in biochemical compounds that it may act synergistically to produce Alzheimer’s protection, “...isolated components of pomegranate may not be as effective as dietary supplementation with either the whole fruit or its juice.” Natural health proponent Mike Adams, author of “The Seven Laws of Nutrition,” said pomegranate juice “...is emerging as one of the most astounding disease-preventing medicines from nature. Not only does it protect against prostate cancer and urinary tract infections, now we’re also seeing how it protects the nervous system from degeneration.” References: 1. Hartman RE, et al. Support the planet’s natural carbon cycle function:
Start Composting. By Mark O’Farrell
F
all is in the air! And of course that means leaves are on the ground and swirling in the air. People are scrambling to gather them up. Leaf blowers are howling and trucks are rumbling to the landfill and back. This great whirlwind of seasonal activity, just to keep nature from doing her job. If you want to do something healthy for your body, your mind, your landscape and Mother Earth, stop the intervention. Get out there and help the world’s natural carbon cycle function. Reduce pollution, sequester carbon and get some exercise building a compost pile. It will make you feel good! There isn’t a more productive way to break a sweat on a chilly fall morning than to gather up all of that landscape debris and turn it into a tonic for your plants. But don’t waste all of that energy by throwing it in a pile and forgetting about it.
Making a successful compost pile is easy if you understand and apply a few basic concepts. If you want to get a little more scientific about it, check out the following excellent reference: ATTRA.ORG. Otherwise, put on a sweater, get out there, and follow these basic rules! When you build a compost pile, you are really building an ecosystem for microorganisms. You want to pay attention to four basic principles to ensure that you build a beneficial environment for the organisms that you want and discourage the pests and unwanted organisms that might otherwise invade your pile. Recipe. The first step in successful composting is to start with the right ingredients. It’s a lot like baking a cake. If you don’t start with the right ingredients, nothing you do will ever make the cake come out right.

Be Well. Function Better. Your recipe can include a wide range of organic materials, but you want to make sure that the carbon to nitrogen ratio is approximately 30:1. That means that for every part nitrogen rich material, such as fresh grass clippings, weeds, manure and kitchen scraps, you include approximately three times that in dry, brown fibrous material such as leaves, dried plant material or chipped or ground woody material. You can make your pile as big as you can manage, but you should have enough material to make it at least a cubic yard, or 3 feet square and three feet high. Mix the materials together and wet them down when you start the pile.
Aeration. Ahh,yes. Another opportunity to get some of that much needed off-season exercise. In order for your community of decomposers in the pile to have the oxygen they need, you will have to turn the pile at least two or three times per season. More often, if you want to speed the composting process. Your microorganisms are getting a lot of exercise, too. They need oxygen.

Like any living community pile needs a reliable supply of water. It depends on thermophyllic organisms, or organisms that produce heat which makes adequate water essential The pile should be kept moist, but not too wet, or it will become anaerobic and ruin your compost. When you turn your pile add enough moisture to make it about as wet as a wrung out sponge. If it is too dry, you will see a grayish- white, ash-like residue that means your microorganisms have run out of water.
Humification. Finally, your pile needs to rest. After active decomposition, your compost should be dark brown and crumbly, with a minimum of recognizable fiber that needs to be screened out. Letting the pile sit for a few weeks will allow it to stabilize, so that it is the best soil amendment available for your lawn and garden. If you don’t have enough material for your own compost pile, you can always build community by working with your neighbors to pool materials for a community pile. If all else fails, you can take the easy route and find a local composting operation who takes green waste for a fee, like Full Circle Compost in Minden, NV. You may not derive all of the health benefits of working your own pile, but you will still be breaking the bad habit of disrupting the carbon cycle. A River Runs Through Us is such a vast alchemical change agent capable of far more than you could ever imagine, funny thing is that you are made of it. Give thanks by letting the important things in your life know that you love them.
M
y brother calls this month’s harvest celebration Thanksgetting because of the ease with which a majority of us consumes large amounts of calories and seek entertainment to assist with its digestion. If we were to ask what Jesus would do? He might encourage us to offer respite to a less fortunate person or honor God by performing a kind act. He might also encourage us to get onto the ground and offer thanks for such an incredible life we’ve been given and serve all of creation. I know that you all are partially afflicted with this epidemic of busyness sweeping our nation. We’ve become chrononauts battling against the passage of our lives and some of us have become chronoholics that storm raid through bullet-pointed agenda rallying and task mastering. Sounds heroic, but unfortunately many of us become plumb-tired and dazed from the speed of life and dogpiles of logistic associated with it. The paradox is that those that give away their time often have more of it.
Our lives are built on the shoulders of hundreds of unspoken lives; each of us is the culmination of a long line of ancestors. I believe that humans are unique in so many ways but especially in having the ability to love, laugh, and rejoice in awe and gratitude. It’s no mystery that we are great at surviving, but why limit yourself? We spend so much of our time thinking about what makes us feel good that we forget about what makes us great. What makes each of us great is our ability to create spaces and opportunities that are served and serviced by what is sacred to us in our worlds. I love assisting others in reclaiming their health. When we are healthy, we are able to be a support and inspiration to all of the relationships that comprise our life. Redefine success around the concept that it be measured by how much you give to others. My recommendation for a fulfilling November is to thank the challenges in your life, thank the busyness for all of its stimulation, thank your body and willingness to explore new ways of being in the world, thank your imminent death and eternal salvation, thank your family, friends, and other earthly inhabitants and thank the eternal holy moment for its crafty, vast, and unpredictable nature. Yours in health and gratitude,
Dr. Taylor Donovan, DC In addition to your time, give your love away www.renohealthforlife.com as well in the form of thanks and praises. Love (775) 348-YOGA (9642)

Sugar
cancer in overweight and sedentary women. Besides cigarette smoking, this is the first risk factor identified with pancreatic cancer. Colorectal cancer risk has been linked to higher insulin levels, as well. The pancreatic cancer study findings make sense. The pancreas produces insulin – the hormone that helps the body utilize blood glucose. Overweight people tend to be “insulin resistant”. This means the pancreas works harder producing more insulin. It’s a vicious cycle.
Feeds
Here’s some food for thought. Cancer rates have increased over the last 100 years or so. Let’s look at the consumption of sugar over the same period. In 1815, the average per capita consumption of sugar in Great Britain was 15 pounds per year. By 1974, the consumption had risen to 120 pounds per year. Holy cow – that’s a lot of desserts!
Cancer?
Nowadays, in the US, the average per person yearly amount is 150 pounds per year. This is NOT including corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup which is the stuff that sweetens soft drinks. The average American drinks 34 gallons of soft drinks per year. Ugly statistics. It’s also worthy to note that the use of refined white flour started in the early 1800’s in Europe. The rice that is so popular in Southeast Asian cuisine (highly processed) because of its color and quick cooking properties started to be widely used after World War II. Is there an increase in cancers due to these dietary changes? It would logically follow. Both white rice and white flour cause a blood sugar spike similar to white sugar. Diets high in white rice and white flour, known as refined carbohydrates are associated with increased incidence of Type II Diabetes. Not to mention the nutritional value is very poor because of processing. It is known that the fiber that is in brown rice and brown flour has protective effect against certain cancers including pancreatic and…Type II diabetes. Hmmm.
By Ainsley Laing
I
s there a link between sugar consumption and cancer? Seventy years ago, Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize for his discovery of glucose as the fuel that grows cancer cells. In other words, sugar feeds cancer. Ok, this makes sense. All of our body’s tissues use glucose for fuel.
A few new studies have followed along these lines and have associated sugar consumption with several types of cancer: A study done on women in Mexico linked high carbohydrate diets with breast cancer. The same link was made by a study done on American women. A small study at University of Southern California identified a significant increase in risk for small bowel cancer in people who consumed the most sugar in coffee, tea and non-diet sodas. A Harvard School of Public Health study demonstrated that a diet high in simple carbohydrate foods such as white rice, white bread and white potatoes increased risk of pancreatic
More and more, nutritionally oriented doctors are saying to cancer patients that cutting down on sugar and refined carbohydrates could slow the growth of the cancer (given that “sugar fuels cancer”). But the real science is not concrete enough for the medical community to say unequivocally that carbs increase cancer cell multiplication. Since sugar gives you no nutrition (vitamins, minerals, etc) makes the body fat and causes cavities, it can’t be good. Doctors, nutritionists and scientists may be divided on the subject, but you can bet that many of us will be eating “brown” and looking out for hidden sugar in food as much as possible. It looks like “the writing is on the wall”…. Ingredient Watch: By Lauren Birtwhistle
Natural Flavoring
What’s On The Label & What’s Not
In order to be classified as natural, an ingredient must meet several guidelines. A product labeled natural cannot contain synthetic or artificial ingredients and can only be minimally processed. Examples of minimal processing are washing or peeling fruits and vegetables, homogenizing milk, canning, bottling, freezing, aging, roasting or grinding. The exact definition of natural flavorings & flavors from Title 21, Section 101, part 22 of the Code of Federal Regulations is as follows: “The term natural flavor or natural flavoring means the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional.” Some companies do not list natural ingredients as natural on their labels, to protect the uniqueness of their product. It’s a way to keep their “secret recipes” a secret. If you are concerned about a certain flavor being natural and it is not listed on the label, call the company. Most companies will to answer your question. And the more questions they receive, the more likely they are to begin listing natural flavors on their labels. Keep in mind when considering natural flavoring, that even if it is natural, it does not mean that it is necessarily better then an artificial flavor. For example, when almond flavor is derived from natural sources, such as peach or apricot pits, it contains traces of hydrogen cyanide, a deadly poison. Benzaldehyde, the artificial almond flavor, is derived by mixing oil of clove and amyl acetate (also known as banana oil, a naturally occurring derivative of coal, not bananas) and does not contain any cyanide. Nevertheless, it is legally considered an artificial flavor and sells at a much lower price. Your choice!
Cellulose Cellulose is the chief constitute in the fiber of plants. It is the basic material for cellulose gum and is found in a wide variety of products. It cannot be digested by humans. When it is an ingredient in a food product it is used as a bulking agent or fill-

er, increasing the weight or volume of the food without adding calories or nutrition. It is used in some diet foods. Cellulose is however, a prime ingredient in paper and textiles, particularly rayon and cotton. There is no known toxicity.
Sucralose Most people have heard of Splenda, the artificial, no-calorie sweetener that is popular in baking because of its ability to withstand high temperatures. Well, another name for Splenda, is sucralose. Sucralose was originally thought to be a safe, alternative sweetener because it is derived from cane sugar. But unfortunately, the body does not recognize sucralose as a sugar, but rather a chemical substance. The sweetness from sucralose is actually from a chlorocarbon chemical that contains three chlorine atoms in each molecule. Sucralose has been approved by the FDA and is an ingredient in nearly 3,500 food products. The scary part? There have been no long-term human studies to determine potential effects. The few short-term tests that were reviewed were conducted by the manufacturer of Splenda. Although lacking in human studies, hundreds of animal studies have been conducted which reported certain common adverse effects related to sucralose. The most problematic of these include: • Shrunken thymus gland • Enlarged liver and kidneys • Reduced growth rate • Decreased red blood cell count • Aborted pregnancy • Diarrhea References: http://www.vegsource.com/articles/natural.flavors.htm http://www.intota.com/ http://tuberose.com/Sucralose.html http://www.truthaboutsplenda.com/index.html

Indoor Plants Are Clean Air Machines! In addition to cleaning the air, houseplants also improve humidity and air quality by giving off water vapor and releasing oxygen. Virtually every tropical indoor plant and many flowering plants are powerful removers of indoor air pollutants. And any plant helps lower carbon monoxide. One potted plant per 100 square feet of floor space can help clean the air in the average home or office. Below is a chart of plants from the NASA study showing those that most effectively removed pollutants from the air.
Pollutant
T
he winter heating season has begun and people in homes and offices will potentially be exposed to harmful gases that are being released from our furniture, carpets, cooking appliances and even second hand smoke, from fireplaces and indoor smokers. What’s a person to do? The answer according to National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) research is a very sophisticated pollution-absorbing device: the common houseplant. Research has shown that living, green and flowering plants can remove multiple toxic chemicals from the air in building interiors. You can use plants in your home and office to improve the quality of air and to make the environment a more pleasant place. Tightly sealed rooms, especially in office buildings, with beautiful, sometimes industrial furnishings, are proving to be hostile environments. All sorts of dangers lurk here -- formaldehyde and benzene fumes released from building materials, furniture and carpeting, ozone from copying machines, fumes from cleaning solvents, radon and secondhand smoke. By improving the air quality of your home or office it may allow people to feel better, be happier and improve everyone’s overall health.

Yoga Possibilities Finding Balance By Carole Bucher
A
Hatha: Hatha is a very general term that can encompass many of the physical types of yoga. Hatha style generally means a slow-paced and gentle class, and provides a good introduction to the basic yoga poses.
Ananda: A gentle yoga combining breath awareness, af-
Integral Yoga: Places almost as much emphasis on pranayama (control of breath) and meditation as it does on postures. It was developed by Swami Satchidananda who taught the crowds at Woodstock to chant “om” for peace, and his student, Dr. Dean Ornish, who uses integral yoga in his treatment of heart patients.
ll yoga is aimed at bringing balance to the physical, mental and spiritual parts of ourselves. Yet the emphasis of the various styles of yoga taught and practiced today differ considerably one to the next, even though they are based on the same postures (called asanas or poses). We hope the overview below will encourage you to try this wonderful activity. firmations, and yoga postures to move from body awareness to energy awareness to silent, inner awareness. Using affirmations while in the asanas is its distinct feature. Ananda was developed by American Donald Walters (Swami Kriyananda) who devoted 45 years of his life to studying the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda.
Anusara: A new style developed by John Friend, Anusara yoga is described as heart-oriented, spiritually inspiring, yet grounded in a deep knowledge of outer and inner body alignment. Each student’s abilities and limitations are respected and honored. Ashtanga:
Features several set sequences of postures, flowing at a vigorous pace, designed to build flexibility strength and stamina. Practitioners synchronize their breath with the postures and focus on continuity of movement and elimination of toxins through body heat. Introduced to the west by Patabai Jois.
Bikram/hot Yoga: Based on 26 traditional Hatha Yoga postures specially sequenced, beginning with Sun Salutations. Classes are given in heated rooms reaching 90 - 105 degrees and humidity at 60%. Practitioners sweat to remove toxins. Frequently referred to as `Hot Yoga’. Began in the west by Bikram Choudhury in 1971.
Iyengar: Focuses primarily on precise posture alignment,
held for longer periods of time, along with mental discipline to experience the full benefits of yoga. Assistive props are frequently used to help hold the postures for beginners. Iyengar principles are used by other styles. Teachers undergo especially rigorous training and may also be certified in yoga therapeutics. The Iyengar style was developed by B.K.S. Iyengar.
Kripalu: Emphasizes proper breath, alignment, coordinat-
ing breath and movement, and “honoring the wisdom of the body.” It include 3 stages, beginning with the steady practice of postures, then holding the postures longer, developing concentration and inner awareness; and finally surrendering to the body’s own wisdom. The end goal is the experience of meditation-in-motion.
Kundalini: Integrates postures, breath techniques, chant-
ing and to stimulate and move the normally dormant spiritual energy at the base of the spine. Postures emphasize flexing the spine and repetitive movement over holding classic static postures. Introduced to the west by Yogi Bhajan in 1968.

m e t s y S e n u m m I r u o Y n e h t g n and Lower Stress To Stre 10 Natural Ways
By Monique N. Gilbert, B.Sc.
Part 2 – 5 more ways:
A
healthy immune system regulates our body’s healing process and protects it against infections and diseases. When stress compromises our immune function, it can result in colds, flu, fatigue, cardiovascular disorders and premature aging. Stress increases heart rate, blood pressure, glucose levels, adrenaline, cortisol, free radicals and oxidative damage. This initiates the “fight or flight” response, places undue strain upon the heart, and can also increase the feelings of anxiety and depression.
6. Music.
Listening to your favorite music is a great method of reducing stress and relieving anxiety. Your individual preference in music determines which types of soothing sounds will best reduce your tension, blood pressure, and promote feelings of tranquility. Pay attention to how you feel when you hear a particular song or genre of music, and keep listening to the ones that produce a relaxing effect.
7. Sleep. Getting enough sound sleep
has a profound impact on your stress levels, immune function and disease resistance. A chronic lack of sleep can leave you feeling sluggish, irritable, forgetful, accident-prone, and have difficulty concentrating or coping with life’s daily aggravations. Long-term sleep loss can also result in heart disease, stroke, hypertension, depression, and anxiety.
Sleep time is when your body and immune system do most of its repairs and rejuvenation. Strive to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Remember rest and relaxation go hand in hand.
8. Positive Thinking.
Optimism can counteract the negative impact stress, tension and anxiety has on your immune system and well-being. Often it is how you perceive things that determine if you get overwhelmed, both mentally and physically. Having a positive attitude, finding the good in what life throws your way and looking at the bright side of things enhances your ability to effectively manage stress.

9. Tea. Regularly drinking tea through-
out the day can help strengthen your immune system and your body’s ability to fight off germs and infections. Both green and black teas contain a beneficial amino acid called L-theanine, which can increase the infection fighting capacity of gamma delta T cells. L-theanine also promotes a sense of relaxation, calmness and well-being by influencing the release and concentration of neurotransmitters (like dopamine, serotonin and GABA) in the brain.

TIPS FOR A
Healthier Bladder
F
or most women from a young age, it has been ingrained in us to go to the bathroom before a long car ride or a trip to the movies…“Just in case!” This preventative habit is actually counterproductive to the blood, sweat and tears our parents shed to potty train us. In fact, it is detrimental to the health of your bladder muscles when you try and go even if you don’t feel a natural urge. Normal bladder function involves coordination between the brain and bladder signals. Contrary to what most of us think, urinating is a voluntary action and it is the brain, not the bladder that should be in charge. Going “just in case” will, long term, contribute to undue feelings of having to go to the bathroom, often quite frequently. Here are some ways to regain brain over bladder:
1. Proper position This may seem like a “duh” moment, but it’s important that you are seated on the toilet with your legs slightly open and relaxed when you go to the bathroom. This allows the bladder and urethra the alignment necessary to properly expel urine. “Hovering” or squatting to avoid catching some dreaded germ from the toilet seat propagates a myth about the cleanliness of public toilets and is bad for our long-term bladder health.
24
November 2007
2. Relax…AHH For some people, going to the bathroom is fleeting moments of respite from a stressful work day. And it should be! Rushing through urination promotes “bearing down”, which is hazardous to the long-term health of your pelvic floor muscles. Instead, simply sit, relax and let it flow!
3. “Rock n’ Roll”…just trust us on this one If you feel like you are not “getting it all out”, try the Rock n’ Roll technique. After you have assumed proper position, relaxed and urinated, take a few minutes to rock back and forth, or front to back, on the toilet seat. Because the bladder walls have crevices where urine can deposit, you may have some residual urine after the first void. This technique may be helpful to get a little more to come out. But remember, no pushing!
4. Double Voiding This is another tried and true method for completely eliminating. After going to the bathroom once, stand up, sit down, relax (again!), and then try to empty your bladder again – without “bearing down”.
Your face deserves pampering.
5. Do some pelvic exercises
HINT: If you are not sure you are properly performing a Kegel, or unsure of which muscles to squeeze, ask your doctor or health professional to check for you. A little proper coaching can make a world of difference in the results!

6. Eat more fiber! Make sure to eat plenty of green, leafy veggies, bran as well as food items like oatmeal and prune juice. Lack of fiber in a diet can lead to constipation, which directly affects your urinary health. Chronic constipation can increase symptoms of an overactive bladder because constant straining and abdominal pressure weaken the support of bladder and pelvic organs. Additionally, women who are constipated have to strain and bear to get it out. This takes the pelvic floor in a direction we don’t want it to go – down!
7. Move it and lose it! Maintaining a healthy exercise regime will help keep your insides flowing (literally). Obese women are more likely to suffer from bladder problems. It’s summer time, so there is no better excuse to get off the couch and sweat your way to a healthier bladder!

Cetyl Myristoleate A Natural Anti Inflammatory With No Side Effects By Dr. Kurt Grange
What if there was a product In order to make any form of myristo- • It lowers blood sedimentation in lupus leate, including cetyl myristoleate, you patients. that could perform a pain relief have to start with myristoleic acid. There • It relieves certain symptoms of multiple miracle in 1-4 months? What if, after 4-6 months of use, the pain relief was permanent? What if this product required no prescription? What if this product had no side effects? According to Dr. Sherry A. Rogers, MD, in her book, Pain Free in 6 Weeks, these are some of the attributes of cetyl myristoleate (CMO). Is this too good to be true? The answer is Yes and No. Let’s take a closer look at cetyl myristoleate.
are only four sources for myristoleic acid, namely beef tallow, butter fat, chicken fat, and sheep tallow. The exact healing mechanisms of cetyl myristoleate action are not fully understood. Even though the mechanisms are unknown, we can clinically observe cetyl myristoleate’s actions. CMO seems to function in at least four different ways. One is its ability to lubricate connective tissue such as joints. Next, cetyl myristoleate acts as an anti-inflammatory. Third, CMO is an immunomodulator or immune system regulator. Cetyl myristoleate’s ability to regulate or calm down hyper-immune responses is one of its most exciting qualities and shows that cetyl myristoleate may be helpful in addressing the symptoms related to many autoimmune diseases. And finally, cetyl myristoleate functions as an analgesic or painkiller. This may explain why CMO has been helpful for many sufferers of muscle tension headaches and fibromyalgia.
Research shows that doses of cetyl myristoleate works extremely well for chronic conditions.
The pain relieving effect of cetyl myristoleate on joints was discovered in 1964 by U.S. National Institute of Health chemist H. W. Diehl. As Diehl got older, he began to experience osteoarthritis in his hands, his knees, and his heels. His family physician tried the usual regimen of cortisone and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs without much effect on the course of the disease. Finally his physician told Harry he could not have any more cortisone. “So,” Diehl said, “I thought about my discovery, and I decided to make a batch and use it on myself.” He did and successfully cured himself of his osteoarthritis.

Authentic CMO, as researched and developed by the San Diego Immunological Center has the following effects: • It reduces the activation of peripheral pain receptors. • It benefits virtually any and all ailments associated with autoimmune diseases.
sclerosis. • It reverses lung inflammation in emphysema. • It lowers the need for insulin in diabetics. • It reverses prostate inflammation. • It corrects Crohn’s disease. • It reverses fibromyalgia. • It improves the health of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) patients. • It lowers high blood pressure, yet elevates low blood pressure. Research shows that doses of 12 grams to 18 grams of cetyl myristoleate taken over a three to four week period of time works extremely well for chronic conditions. However, there are those individuals that may require a second round of CMO protocol. It has also been found that many of those individuals who have taken cetyl myristoleate, and have not responded, have often taken doses far below what is recommended.
As powerful a nutrient as it is, the effects of cetyl myristoleate can be helped by combining it with other natural substances. Two or three grams daily of omega-3 fish oil or two tablespoons of Golden flaxseed oil during the month-long course of cetyl myristoleate can help its effects. This should be accompanied by 300-500 mg of Vitamin E daily. A minimum of 1,500 mg of glucosamine sulfate should be taken daily for at least three months to assist in rebuilding cartilage damaged by degenerative arthritis. Remember,
glucosamine is a shell fish product. This fact should be taken into consideration if allergies to shell fish are present. It is also recommended that 2,000-4,000 mg of MSM and 1,000-2,000 Ester-C (form of vitamin C) be added to the regime. NOTE: Because the molecules of cetyl myristoleate are rather large, in order to get the most benefit from the CMO, it is extremely important to take pancreatic digestive enzyme supplements to reduce them to an absorbable size. It is also strongly recommended that “Night Shade” vegetables (potatoes, peppers, eggplant, tomato, tobacco, cayenne, chili, paprika) and carbonated beverages be removed from the diet. There is a wide degree of quality and results to be found in the diverse cetyl myristoleate products available today. In fact, some of the CMO formulas have no cetyl myristoleate in them at all! Before purchasing any of these formulas, please read the label to determine exactly how much cetyl myristoleate is available. It is imperative that the formula contains a minimum of 12% CMO. If the levels are below this amount, you’ll probably have to take a wheelbarrow full before seeing any results.
structure of the synthetic molecules is different and is not as bioavailable or bioabsorbable as natural. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse side effects from cetyl myristoleate. There have been no reported interactions with other medications or natural substances, and other substances do not interfere with cetyl myristoleate. In addition, test results show cetyl myristoleate to be a completely non-toxic material that does not build up in the tissues or leave behind any residue. In the natural world it works like this, acidity results in irritation. Irritation leads to swelling and inflammation. Inflammation stimulates pain and the destruction of body tissues. Cetyl myristoleate could be a merciful tool to break this debilitating cycle. A complete regime for arthritis and joint pain should include, CMO, glucosamine, MSM and hyaluronic acid (to stimulate joint lubrication). While these products are cheap and may retail for $3 or $4 a bottle wholesale, they are worthless as joint supplements or pain relievers. BAMBOO :
Facts Behind The Fashionable Fiber By Denise Rush

hat do conventional fashion designers Carilyn Vaile, Diane vonFurstenberg, Oscar de la Renta, and eco-fashion designers Amanda Shi of Avita, Linda Loudermilk, Katherine Hamnett, Miho Aoki and Dreamsacks have i n c o m m o n ? Bamboo! Bamboo fabric is becoming the new darling of the fashion industry, partly for its eco-status and sustainability, but also for its luxurious look and feel, downright gorgeous colors, and the wonderful way it moves
More specifically, bamboo fabric has many very unique qualities: • It has a natural sheen and softness that feels and drapes like silk but is less expensive and more durable. • Bamboo clothing is easy to launder in a clothes washer and dryer. • Bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal supposedly because of a bacteriostatic agent unique to bamboo plants called “bamboo kun or kunh.” The bamboo kun inhibits odor-producing bacteria from growing and spreading in the bamboo cloth, meaning that bamboo clothing is more hygienic and retains a fresher scent.
28
November 2007
• Bamboo clothing is hypoallergenic. • Bamboo is highly absorbent and wicks water away from the body 3 to 4 times faster than cotton. In warm, humid and sweaty weather, bamboo clothing helps keep the wearer drier, cooler and more comfortable and doesn’t stick to skin. • The structure of bamboo fibers make the fabric more breathable and thermal regulating than cotton, hemp, wool or synthetic fabrics. • Bamboo clothing is naturally more wrinkle-resistant than cotton, and while it might still require ironing after washing, bamboo fabric can be ironed at a lower temperature than cotton. Shrinkage during washing and drying is minimal at warm temperatures. • Bamboo fibers and fabrics absorb dyes faster and more thoroughly than cotton, modal and viscose, with better color clarity. Unlike cotton, bamboo fabrics do not need to be mercerized to improve their luster and dye-ability. • Bamboo clothing is 100% biodegradable and is decomposed in the soil by micro-organisms and sunlight without decomposing into pollutants such as methane gas a common by-product of decomposition in landfills and dumps. • Bamboo fabrics and clothing can be manufactured and produced without any chemical additives although eco-certification such as Oeko-Tex is necessary to insure that the manufacturing and finishing processes are healthy. • Currently, there are no known genetically modified organism (GMO) variants of bamboo; let’s hope it stays that way. If you are interested in purchasing bamboo clothing, especially if manufactured outside the US, look for certification from an independent and reliable certification company such as Oeko-Tex, Soil Association, SKAL, KRAV or similar organic or sustainable certification body to insure that the garment is top quality and healthy for consumers. Bamboo clothing, ranging from casual tee-shirts and yoga wear to beautifully designed dresses, skirts and pants may be found in Reno at The Far East Corner. If You Are Bed-ridden For More Than A Week, Eat more protein to prevent loss of muscle mass.
A recent small study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 86, No. 2, 366-372, August 2007 showed that calorie restriction under conditions of muscle inactivity (e.g., lying in bed or chronically restricted movement due to illness or injury) accelerated the breakdown and loss of muscle mass (protein), even at 2 weeks duration. The technical research conclusion was that “calorie restriction enhanced the catabolic response to inactivity by combining greater protein catabolism in the postabsorptive state with an impaired postprandial anabolic utilization of free amino acids.” What this means in easy to understand language is that people of all ages who are wheel-chair bound or must stay in bed for more than 1 week would be wise to eat plenty of complete protein (i.e., essential amino acids)-rich food to avoid loss of muscle. Food Additives
S
hopping was easy when most food came from farms. Now, factory-made foods have made chemical additives a significant part of our diet. Most people may not be able to pronounce the names of many of these chemicals, but they still want to know what the chemicals do and which ones are safe and which are poorly tested or possibly dangerous. A simple general rule about additives is to avoid sodium nitrite, saccharin, caffeine, olestra, acesulfame K*, and artificial colorings. Not only are they among the most questionable additives, but they are used primarily in foods of low nutritional value. Also, don’t forget the two most familiar additives: sugar and salt. They may pose the greatest risk because we consume so much of them. Fortunately, most additives are safe and some even increase the nutritional value of the food. *ACESULFAME-K Artificial sweetener: Baked goods, chewing gum, gelatin desserts, soft drinks. This artificial sweetener, manufactured by Hoechst, a giant German chemical company, is widely used around the world. It is about 200 times sweeter than sugar. In the United States, for several years acesulfame-K (the K is the chemical symbol for potassium) was permitted only in such foods as sugar-free baked goods, chewing gum, and gelatin desserts. In July 1998, the FDA allowed this chemical to be used in soft drinks, thereby greatly increasing consumer exposure. The safety tests of acesulfame-K were conducted in the 1970s and were of mediocre quality. Key rat tests were afflicted by disease in the animal colonies; a mouse study was several months too brief and did not expose animals during gestation. Two rat studies suggest that the additive might cause cancer. It was for those reasons that in 1996 the Center for Science in the Public Interest urged the FDA to require better testing before permitting acesulfame-K in soft drinks. In addition, large doses of acetoacetamide, a breakdown product, have been shown to affect the thyroid in rats, rabbits, and dogs. Hopefully, the small amounts in food are not harmful. Co-op America’s 12-Step Plan for By Alisa Gravitz
Climate Action
[Editor’s Note: In honor of former Vice President Al Gore being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his decades of work on climate change, Healthy Beginnings is reprinting this review of steps outlined by Co-op America one year ago to meet the challenge of climate change.]
W
ith the movie An Inconvenient Truth drawing record audiences last year, and groups as diverse as the “Evangelical Climate Initiative” and the Pentagon sounding the alarm on the coming climate catastrophe, our country could be on the cusp of taking real action on a very real danger. But how much action is enough to match the scale of the solution to the scale of the problem? Based on the data — such as rapidly melting polar icecaps — showing that climate change is happening faster than anyone had thought, it is increasingly clear: Baby steps won’t do it. We need a bold action plan that can evaluate corporate, government, community, and household plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions – especially carbon emissions -- to levels we can live with. Scientists at the Princeton University’s Carbon Mitigation Initiative (CMI) have taken up this challenge, and propose stabilizing carbon emissions by dividing this huge task into smaller, doable action “wedges” of equal size—each with the capacity to reduce carbon emissions by 1 billion tons/year by 2054. CMI lists 15 possible “wedges,” out of which we need to achieve just seven to reach carbon stabilization. Co-op America added their own filters to this building-block approach, screening out measures too dangerous, costly, and slow (like nuclear power plants, synfuels, and “clean” coal), and beefed up those that are safe and cost-effective. (Wind energy is cost-competitive at utility scale, and has beaten natural gas in certain markets. Solar energy will be cost-competitive within five years.) With these filters, they developed a plan that uses current technologies; is safe, clean, and cost-effective; and is big enough to meet the climate challenge—12 “wedges” when only seven are needed. Each of the following could reduce carbon emissions by at least 1 billion tons per year by 2054:
Here’s Co-op America’s 12-step plan: 1. Increase fuel economy for the world’s 2 billion cars from an average of 30 mpg to 60 mpg.
2. Cut back on driving. Decrease car travel for 2 billion 30-mpg
cars from 10,000 to 5,000 miles per year, through increased use of mass transit, telecommuting, and walking and biking.
30
November 2007
3. Increase energy efficiency by one-quarter in existing buildings and appliances. Move to zero-emissions plans for new buildings.
4. Decrease tropical deforestation to zero, and double the rate of new tree plantings.
5. Stop soil erosion and encourage local, organic agriculture: Apply “conservation tillage” techniques to cropland at 10 times the current usage. Choose local, organic food and diets with less meat.
6. Increase wind power. Add 3 million 1-megawatt windmills, 75 times the current capacity.
7. Push hard for solar power. Add 3,000 gigawatt-peak solar photovoltaic units, 1,000 times current capacity. 8. Increase efficiency of coal plants from an average of 32 percent efficiency to 60 percent, and shut down plants that don’t meet the standard. No net new coal plants; for new plants built, an equal number should close.
9. Replace 1,400 gigawatts of coal with natural gas, a four-fold increase in natural gas usage over current levels — a short-term step until zero-emissions renewable technologies can replace natural gas. 10. Sequester carbon dioxide at existing coal plants. Sequestration involves storing carbon dioxide underground, an unproven technology that may, nonetheless, be better than nothing.
11. Develop zero-emissions vehicles, including plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles powered by renewable energy.
12. Develop biomass as a short-term replacement for fossil fuel until better carbon-free technologies are developed — but only biofuels made from waste, and made without displacing farmland and rainforests. This framework can help us think big and fast enough to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. If we are to achieve each wedge by 2054, the next 10 years must see major action. Anything less and we’re kidding ourselves. The good news? We can do this. We have the technologies and the know-how. We can take many of these steps today, on our own. For the rest, we need to persuade our elected officials, contact our power companies and auto manufacturers, and demand action from those with decision-making power. The best news? Beating climate change opens the door to more jobs, energy security, progress against poverty, a cleaner environment, and a safer world — a better future for all of us. If you are interested in health, then you probably know the fruits and vegetables section of your local supermarket like the back of your hand. But be careful. The colorful stickers that are placed on your produce purchases will tell you more than you think. That’s right, they’re not just a code for the supermarket clerk to punch into the register to let you know what the price is. If a sticker has four numbers on it that means that it was grown conventionally. If the sticker has five numbers on it, caution should be exercised. Five digits starting with the number “8” means that what you are buying has been genetically engineered. In other words, the food’s genetic material has been altered. If the sticker has five digits and starts with the number “9,” then it means that the food was grown organically. It seems that people are willing to pay more for foods that they believe are healthier and more nutritious. So it should
come as no surprise that organic foods are the fastest growing segment in the natural products industry. “Certified Organic” producers of fruits and vegetables are forbidden by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) from using synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, genetically modified seeds, irradiation or fertilizer that has been derived from sewage sludge. So if you are interested in your health and buying “organic” foods to eat, then you’d better look for a “9” to start the five digit code. Can’t seem to get that sticker off? Real Free-Range Eggs

he new results are in: Eggs from hens allowed to peck on pasture are a heck of a lot better than those from chickens raised in cages! Most of the
eggs currently sold in supermarkets are nutritionally inferior to eggs produced by hens raised on pasture. That is the conclusion Mother Earth News Magazine has reached following completion of their 2007 egg testing project. The testing has found that, compared to official U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrient data for commercial eggs, eggs from hens raised on pasture may contain:

• 1/3 less cholesterol • 1/4 less saturated fat • 2/3 more vitamin A • 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids • 3 times more vitamin E • 7 times more beta carotene These amazing results come from 14 flocks around the country that range freely on pasture or are housed in moveable pens that are rotated frequently to maximize access to fresh pasture and protect the birds from predators. Egg samples of from each of the 14 pastured flocks were tested by an accredited laboratory in Portland, Ore. The 2007 results are similar to those from 2005, when Mother Earth News tested eggs from four flocks all managed as truly free range. But these tests are not the first to show that pastured eggs are more nutritious. Several studies conducted since the mid-1970s all indicate that pastured eggs are richer in nutrients than typical supermarket eggs. We think these dramatically differing nutrient levels are most likely the result of the different diets of birds that produce these two types of eggs. True free-range birds eat a chicken’s natural diet of all kinds of seeds, green plants, insects and worms, usually along with grain or laying mash. Factory farm birds never even see the outdoors, let alone get to forage for their natural diet. Instead they are fed the cheapest possible mixture of corn, soy
and/or cottonseed meals, with all kinds of additives. The conventional egg industry wants very much to deny that free-range/pastured eggs are better than eggs from birds kept in crowded, inhumane indoor conditions. A statement on the American Egg Boards Web site (www.aeb.org) says “True free-range eggs are those produced by hens raised outdoors or that have daily access to the outdoors.” Baloney. They’re trying to duck the issue by incorrectly defining “true freerange.” And the USDA isn’t helping consumers learn the truth, either: “Allowed access to the outside” is how the USDA defines free-range. This inadequate definition means that producers can, and do, label their eggs as free-range even if all they do is leave little doors open on their giant sheds, regardless of whether the birds ever learn to go outside, and regardless of whether there is good pasture or just bare dirt or concrete outside those doors! Both organizations need to come clean. True free-range eggs are those from hens that range outdoors on pasture, which means they can do what is natural; to forage for all manner of green plants and insects. The Egg Board statement goes on to say: “The nutrient content of eggs is not affected by whether hens are raised freerange or in floor or cage operations.”
Again, that is hogwash. They think they can simply ignore the growing body of evidence that clearly shows that eggs are superior when the hens are allowed to eat their natural diet. Or maybe they think it is OK to mislead the public to protect egg producers; bottom line. After Mother Earth News published its first report about the high nutrient levels in pastured eggs, the Egg Nutrition Council questioned their suggestion that pastured eggs were better in their Aug. 8, 2005, newsletter: “Barring special diets or breeds, egg nutrients are most likely similar for egg-laying hens, no matter how they are raised.” There’s that double-speak, again: “Barring special diets ...” Since when are diets not a part of how chickens are raised? At least six studies show that pastured eggs are better. The best they can say is “most likely” this evidence is wrong? Cite some science to support your assertions! The U.S. Poultry and Egg Association offer the same misleading statement on its Web site: “What are free-range eggs? Free-range eggs are from hens that live outdoors or have access to the outdoors. The nutrient content of eggs from free-range hens is the same as those from hens housed in production facilities with cages.” It’s amazing what a group can do with a $20 million annual budget. That’s what factory-farm egg producers pay to fund the AEB each year to convince the public to keep buying their eggs, which we now believe are substandard. The Egg Board’s misleading claims about free-range/pastured eggs pervade the Internet, even though the Board has been aware of the evidence about the nutrient differences at least since our 2005 report. We found virtually the same (unsubstantiated) claim denying any difference in nutrient content on Web sites of the American Council on Science and Health (an industry-funded nonprofit), the Iowa Egg Council, the Georgia Egg Commission, the Alberta (Canada) Egg Producers, Hormel Foods, CalMaine
Foods and NuCal Foods (“The largest distributor of shell eggs in the Western United States”). But the most ridiculous online comments turned up at www.supermarketguru.com, a site maintained by a “food trends consultant.” It says: “FREE RANGE: Probably the most misunderstood of all claims, it’s important to note that hens basically stay near their food, water and nests, and the idea of a happy-go-lucky bird scampering across a field is far from the natural way of life. The claim only means that the hens have access to the outdoors, not that they avail themselves of the opportunity. The hens produce fewer eggs so they are more expensive; higher product costs add to the price of the eggs. The nutrient content is the same as other eggs.” If you’ve ever been around chickens, you know that whoever wrote that hasn’t. Chickens will spend almost their entire day ranging around a property scratching and searching for food. Even as tiny chicks, they are naturally curious and will begin eating grass and pecking curiously at any insects or even specks on the walls of their brooder box. Scampering across a field, looking for food, is precisely their natural way of life.
Supermarket Guru did get one thing right, though. Free-range/pastured eggs are likely to be more expensive because production costs are higher. As usual, you get what you pay for. If you buy the cheapest supermarket eggs, you are not only missing out on the valuable nutrients eggs should and can contain, you are also supporting an industrial production system that treats animals cruelly and makes more sustainable, small-scale egg production difficult. You can raise pastured chickens easily right in your back yard. Or you can find pastured eggs at local farm stands and farmers markets, or sometimes at the supermarket. Tell the store manager you want eggs from pastured hens, and encourage the manager to contact local producers. To find pastured producers near you, check out www.eatwild.com or www.localharvest.com.
Further Evidence: In 1974, the British Journal of Nutrition found that pastured eggs had 50 percent more folic acid and 70 percent more vitamin B12 than eggs from factory farm hens.

Brush Your Skin By Barbara Hey
E
ver watch your cat or dog roll around in the dirt? That’s the animal version of dry brushing—giving the body a water-free once-over to wake up and invigorate the skin. With humans, no dirt’s involved thankfully—just a brush and a little bit of self-indulgence. Dry brushing, a way to purposively, gently stimulate the skin, enhances circulation in the blood and lymphatic systems, supports immune functioning, and exfoliates the skin. This practice crosses generations and cultures and occurs in one form or another in Africa, Scandinavia, the Middle East, and Asia. Native Americans used dried corncobs as the brush; the Japanese traditionally use a loofahlike sponge as the purifying prelude to a hot soak. These days healthcare practitioners recommend dry brushing to promote skin vitality and as a means to promote healing. In addition, many spas include dry brushing as part of a skin renewal treatment to slough dead skin, stimulate circulation in the skin’s surface, reduce puffiness, and restore a healthy hue. Katie Sheff, ND, with the Bastyr Center for Natural Health in Seattle, prescribes dry brushing for patients who are doing a detox or battling lymph issues (such as lymph fluid stagnation after surgery or a viral illness),

and for people interested in adding a radianceenhancing tool to their daily routine. Dry brushing works best as part of the getting-ready-for-the-day regimen. Set aside five minutes first thing, before jumping in the shower. Use any kind of brush, keeping in mind that a long-handled brush makes it easier to navigate the far-reaches of the body. Use a delicate touch—if you get too abrasive, the skin goes into defense mode. “It should be a touch that’s like a breeze,” says Sheff. The skin should perceive the contact as pleasurable, not as a clean-the-kitchenfloor scrub. When dry brushing is part of a spa skin treatment, it can have a bit more oomph. But, says Linda Mullen a certified esthetician at The Heartland Spa in Gilman, Illinois, “the pressure depends on the person, the skin type, the degree of sensitivity.” Brushing works to remove the surface cells, but in a gentle fashion. “In the spa, dry brushing is used as the first step, to prepare the skin for what comes next, like a soothing body polish, or an alternative to more rigorous methods of exfoliation like a sea salt scrub.”

Devil’s Claw
Extract May Reduce the Pain Associated with Osteoarthritis & Other Musculoskeletal Complaints By John Morgenthaler
D
evil’s Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is a shrubby vine native to southwest Africa, namely the Kalahari Desert, Namibian Steppes, and the island of Madagascar. Its name makes reference to claw-shaped, mini grabbing hooks that wrap around the plant’s seeds. The hooks serve to disperse the seeds by sticking to a passing animal. The root—actually underground tubers—is highly valued by indigenous African Bushmen, Khoikhoi and Bantu, as a bitter tonic for digestion and arthritic conditions. Devil’s Claw extract has been used for more than half a century in Europe for musculoskeletal pain and during that time has become an established treatment option. The European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy (ESCOP) now recommends Devil’s Claw extract for painful osteoarthritis and the relief of low back pain.
How does it work? The main active ingredient in Devil’s Claw is harpagoside, which is thought to produce anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, and antioxidant effects. Recent research has focused on the possibility that its antioxidant action may explain the antiinflammatory and anti-rheumatic actions, but the mechanism is unclear.
Who could benefit from Devil’s Claw extract? If you have osteoarthritis—especially of the knee, hip, or spine—there are a number of studies that show people have obtained pain relief from Devil’s Claw. And if you suffer from low back pain, you may benefit as well. In fact, studies show that Devil’s Claw has proved to be so effective that it allows individuals to lower their dose or even eliminate other drugs used to treat arthritis pain.
• In addition to showing that Devil’s Claw may reduce osteoarthritic pain as effectively as some conventional drugs, a doubleblind, four-month study of 122 patients in France showed that patients taking the herb experienced significantly fewer adverse events than those taking a prescription drug. Most notably, the patients preferred the Devil’s Claw extract over the drug. Helps relieve pain from osteoarthritis of the spine, hip, knee, and low back • Researchers at the University of Toronto, Canada, searched several databases and other sources to identify trials testing Devil’s Claw extract in adults suffering from osteoarthritis or low back pain. They found strong evidence for the use of Devil’s Claw extract in the treatment of acute, chronic, non-specific low-back pain. • In an open German study, 75 patients who had arthritic hips or knees took Devil’s Claw extract for 12 weeks. The physicians reported a continuous improvement in pain (45.5%), limitation of mobility (35.0%), and joint crepitus (25.4%), a peculiar crackling, crinkly, or grating feeling from the wearing out of cartilage. No significant adverse reactions were reported. The results indicate that Devil’s Claw extract is clinically beneficial in the treatment of arthritis of the hip and/or knee. Continued on page 47...
Scientific Research: Devil’s Claw works better than placebo and pain relievers for short-term pain relief • Two trials examining the effects of Devil’s Claw extract showed that daily doses were better than placebo and typical dose pain relievers for short-term improvements in pain.

Diabetes & Gum Disease What’s The Connection? By Tammy Davenport
G
um disease, also known as Periodontal disease, is one of the leading causes of tooth loss among adults and is also frequently linked to the control of diabetes. Gum disease is an infection of the gum tissues and bone that keep your teeth in place; it has also been linked to heart disease and strokes.
• Gums that tend to bleed easily • Gums separating from the teeth • Loose teeth • Frequent bad breath • Change in the way your teeth fit together • Change in the way partials or dentures fit
Factors That Link Diabetes to Gum Disease
Ways to Help Prevent Gum Disease
1. Studies show that people with insufficient blood sugar control seem to develop gum disease more frequently and more severely then people who have good management over their diabetes.
1. Maintain good control over your blood sugar levels. 2. Do not smoke. 3. Good oral hygiene and regular dental check ups are essential
2. Diabetes slows circulation, which can also make the gum
tissues more susceptible to infections.
3. Diabetes reduces the body’s resistance to infection which increases the probability of the gums becoming infected.
4. High glucose levels in saliva promotes growth of bacteria
that cause gum disease.
5. People with diabetes who smoke are far more likely to de-
velop gum disease than people who smoke and do not have diabetes.
6. Poor oral hygiene is a major factor in gum disease for everyone, but it is even more so for a person with diabetes. Signs and Symptoms of Gum Disease • Red and swollen gums

in preventing gum disease.
4. Eat a healthy and well balanced diet. Be sure to tell your dentist and hygienist that you have diabetes so that he / she can detect any signs of early gum disease. There are two major stages of periodontal disease, gingivitis and periodontitis. Even though people with diabetes tend to develop gum disease more frequently than others, if diagnosed in the early stage (gingivitis), it can be treated and reversed. If treatment is not received, a more serious and advanced stage (periodontitis) may follow which includes bone loss and is not reversible. Deodorants
&Anti-perspirants D
eodorants and antiperspirants are probably the most used cosmetic products on the market. Do you know the difference between them? Antiperspirants stop us sweating by using zirconium and aluminium to block the pores which release the sweat. The astringent (meaning tends to draw together or constrict tissues; sharp and penetrating; pungent or severe) ingredients also contract pores, limiting the amount of sweat produced. Deodorants mask the smell of sweat but do not prevent sweating. They contain a fragrance or have anti-bacterial ingredients, such as triclosan, which minimize the odorproducing bacteria. Deodorants may limit the smell, but they will still leave you with wetness. If you don’t like the idea of stopping your body from sweating, deodorants are the best answer. Aerosol and roll-on products will most likely contain ACH (Aluminium Chlorohydrate), whereas sticks, gels and other solid products are most likely to contain an antiperspirant salt called AZAG (Aluminium zirconium tetrachlorohydrex GLY). Whenever you buy deodorant or any product that goes on your skin or in your body, it is a good idea to first read the ingredients. They’re usually in very tiny print on the back of the label. If you have trouble reading small print, carry a magnifying glass around with you so you can read before you buy. This is critical because what you put on your skin can be absorbed directly into your bloodstream. And harmful ingredients in your blood can have potentially deadly effects on your body.

Here are 7 ingredients to avoid when choosing your deodorant: Aluminum chlorohydrate,
aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly or any aluminum compounds. These compounds are readily absorbed into the skin. They are very soluble and very effective as antiperspirants. Inside the body, the aluminum portion of the molecule ionizes, forming a free or radical aluminum. This molecule passes freely across cell membranes and forms a physical plug. When this plug is eventually dissolved it is selectively absorbed by the liver, kidney, brain, cartilage and bone structure. Research suggests that there is an association between aluminum and breast cancer.Parabens (methyl, ethyl, propyl, benzyl and butyl) are all derived from toluene, a toxic petrochemical derivative. Toluene is toxic if swallowed or inhaled. It is also harmful in contact with the skin. There is some evidence that repeated exposure to toluene may cause reproductive harm. Since 2000, 13 research studies have shown that various types of parabens act like estrogen in animals and in tissue culture. Estrogen is known to drive the growth of cancerous cells.
Triclosan is a skin irritant and may cause contact dermatitis. It may kill healthy bacteria as well as harmful bacteria and may contain carcinogenic contaminants. It is stored in body fat and is classified as a pesticide by the FDA. #

FITNESS
The Most Effective Fat Burning & Muscle Building
13 Minute Workout By Jesse Cannone
M
ost people who want to burn off some excess pounds and tighten and tone their bodies simply don’t have 2 hours each day to spend in the gym performing the bodybuilding style workouts that most “fitness experts” recommend. Plus, these workouts consist of exercises and techniques that do not exercise the body in the way it is normally used so they end up building a somewhat unusable strength. In my opinion, most people, unless their main objective is body building, shouldn’t perform the traditional style workouts While I do still believe that machine and free weight strength training is the best choice for body building, it is NOT the best choice when it comes to general fitness goals like strength, flexibility, endurance, etc.

I don’t know about you, but I can barely fit in 15 minutes for exercise let alone 2 hours… and I personally am not interested in muscle size alone (which doesn’t mean strength and usually leaves you stiff and inflexible)! I’m sure your schedule is probably the same. The good news though is you don’t have to… you can burn fat, increase flexibility, build unbelievable strength and endurance, reshape your body, and build a level of fitness that is truly functional. I want to share with you a workout that I do personally that delivers a great combination of strength, flexibility, cardio and muscular endurance, and fat burning. WARNING: The following workout will not only surprise you, but it will likely go against everything you ever thought to be true about fitness. Also, it is recommend you consult your physician before beginning any exercise program.
Are you ready? Good, here it is: The following exercises should be performed with little or no rest between and you may need to adjust the number of repetitions or time depending upon your current fitness level.
1. Jumping Jacks –1 minute 2. Bodyweight squat (one-leg

reps
3.
Push-ups (slower reps for advanced) – as many reps as possible

There you have it… sounds easy, right? That couldn’t possibly do anything, right? Will it personally challenge you? Try it right now! Drop what you are doing and give it a shot and see for yourself. If you find it a bit easy, perform it 2-3 times thru without rest. This workout will deliver more usable fitness results and benefits than any traditional gym or health club workout. Now, you can of course implement this type of workout in the gym and make it even better, but the beauty of this is you can do it anywhere! Also, this is just one example and as you can imagine, there thousands of other exercises you can add or replace; switching the exercises every 2-4 weeks or even better is to put together 3 or 4 different workouts and then rotate them is good. “Eliminate Body Waste… Or It May Eliminate You” By Carol Christian
D
etoxification is believed to be the first step to natural health. Removing potentially harmful waste from the intestines is a quick, effective and safe way to begin the detoxification process. The colon is one of the body’s major organs necessary for eliminating waste; if it is not functioning perfectly, the body can, in time, become congested with decaying garbage that can cause damage to one or all the vital organs. A slow and insidious process, over a period of years, toxic build-up can gradually lead to a variety of diseases, including arthritis, ulcers, cancers, diabetes, hypertension, heart attacks, stroke, diverticulitis, and skin breakouts. The warning signs can occur months or even years before and can be experienced by many people as a simple headache or a noticeable lack of energy. It is the inability to assimilate nutrients due to toxic build-up that eventually causes the body to break down. Here is an explanation of why this happens. Consider that today, much of our food is grown in de-mineralized soil. In addition, the food is injected with fertilizers; the air is polluted and the water is unclean. Combine that with sedentary living, proper elimination of body waste has become a major health issue of modern living. Statistics show that over $100,000 million is spent annually on laxatives in an attempt to combat this problem. Is it any wonder that few people have a normal functioning colon? In addition, it is reported that over 100,000 Americans undergo colostomies each year with over 100,000 dying annually of colon cancer – now ranked as the second leading cause of death in the USA.
42
November 2007
The digestive problems of those individuals who continually consume devitalized “garbage” foods results in unhealthy colons replete with abnormal pockets, bulges, twists and crooks that provides a safe harbor for impacted cement-like waste deposits that stick to the intestinal lining. This unhealthy state of affairs also serves as a home for parasites and harmful bacteria.
The muscles of the intestines contract with new life and vigor every time you fill the intestines with water. By removing unnatural conditions of filth and stagnation colon irrigation provides a simple and natural way to supply the needed exercise and cleanliness to the intestines as first step to optimum health.
Waste often forces itself out on a daily basis. However, naturopathically speaking, you can still be considered constipated even if you have two or even three bowel movements a day!
Though nausea and cramping can sometimes be experienced during colon hydrotherapy, it is the result of stored toxins being removed that are getting “stirred up”. Most patients are pleasantly surprised at the incredible results from the intestinal wash program they didn’t think they needed. Improved digestion, increased mental power, a sense of wellbeing and more vibrant health are only a few of the benefits. Patients with brain fog, extreme depression and pessimism have seemingly been “transformed” into cheerful optimistic people after all or most of the putrefying waste was removed from their colon!
“It may surprise you to learn that evacuation while sitting on a toilet is about as natural as eating while standing on your head! You were designed to evacuate in a natural squatting position with your weight on your feet. This is nature’s way of promoting peristaltic action necessary for complete evacuation. Any other manner impedes nature’s purpose. Some country’s toilets are designed to conform with nature’s own plan – not so in the USA”.
Colon Hydrotherapy Although one can take an enema at home, a gentle and natural detoxifier is colon hydrotherapy. Contrary to some objections, colon irrigation does not wash out the intestinal flora, valuable nutrients, nor is it habit forming. Quite the opposite is true! Flushing out putrefaction in the large intestine actually helps increase the beneficial intestinal flora. Every time you clean out the decaying waste, you actually help provide your intestines with an enhanced environment for the natural flora, which immediately begins to multiply in their media.

The Truth Behind

Hyperactive Kids
We focus on sports injury management & performance.
UK researchers have warned that children may develop hyperactive behavior if their diets contain food additives.
The Food Standards Agency, a non-ministerial government department of the UK Government, carried out a study on 300 randomly selected children and found that hyperactivity increased after a drink containing additive combinations. The agency says that hyperactive children might benefit from fewer additives. However, health experts claim that drugs, not diet changes, will be more beneficial in the most severe cases. The researchers say that 5-10% of school-age children suffer from some degree of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), with symptoms such as impulsiveness, inability to concentrate and excessive activity. They say that the number of boys diagnosed for with the condition is more than girls. With financial aid from the Food Standards Agency, Southampton University researchers examined whether giving additives to a group of ordinary three-year-olds and eight or nine-year-olds had any effect on their behavior or not. Children were randomly given one of three drinks—a potent mix of colorings and additives, a drink that roughly matched the average daily additive intake of a child of their age, or a “placebo” drink that had no additives. Upon measuring the hyperactivity levels in the study subjects, the researchers found that mix “A”, with the high levels of additives, had a “significantly adverse” effect compared with the inactive placebo drink. The older children showed some adverse effects after the second, less potent mix, but the response varied significantly from child to child. According to lead researcher Jim Stevenson, the findings indicate that certain mixtures of artificial food colours, alongside sodium benzoate, a preservative used in ice cream and confectionary, may raise hyperactivity. “However, parents should not think that simply taking these additives out of food will prevent hyperactive disorders. We know that many other influences are at work but this at least is one a child can avoid,” the BBC quoted him as saying. Julian Hunt, from Food and Drink Federation, said that the tests did not represent how the additives were used normally. “Manufacturers are very aware of consumer sensitivities about the use of additives in food and drink products. It is important to reassure consumers that the Southampton study does not suggest there is a safety issue with the use of these additives,” he said. The study has been published in the journal Lancet. -- London, September 2007

t’s almost winter, but your dog is still shedding. Don’t worry; this is very normal. Dogs not only shed their winter coats when the weather warms up, they prepare for winter by shedding as well.

• Vacuum often; don’t let it build up. • Avoid pet hair on every article of furniture in your home. • Have designated furniture that your dog is allowed; use machine-washable covers and simply toss them into the washer when needed. • Use seat covers or a washable throw in your car.
The process goes like this: After Dogs shed their winter coat, they develop a shorter, less dense summer coat. And in order to make room for a warmer winter There are many supplements and coat, the summer coat has to go too. And go it does -- all over your furniture, tonics that claim to stop pet shedding, but clothes and the inside of your car! don’t listen. Shedding is a natural cycle in All dogs shed. Some more then oth- a dog’s life. Don’t waste your money. ers, but unless your dog is hairless, it is a problem that every dog owner has to deal with. There a few simple solutions that can alleviate dog (or cat) hair popping up everywhere:
44
November 2007
The best way to tame your dog’s shedding is to commit to a daily or weekly routine of combing or brushing. Some breeds shed more then others. If your dog has a long, thick coat you may want to brush him every day. But if he has a
short, fine coat you may be able to get away with two brushes a week. There are many different kinds of combs and brushes. Some may work better on a short, fine coat and others were made for full-coated breeds. Ask your vet or pet groomer what would be the best for your dog; you may want to consider trying the new rubber hand brooms, as well. Shedding year-round is normal, but you need to distinguish between healthy shedding or something more. Excessive shedding may be caused by skin allergies or skin parasites. Poor nutrition is another cause of shedding. Changing your dog’s diet to a higher quality will almost always improve his coat. References: http://www.veterinarypartner.com
Real Free-Range Eggs Continued from page 33. In 1988, Artemis Simopoulos, co-author of The Omega Diet, found pastured eggs in Greece contained 13 times more omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids than U.S. commercial eggs. A 1998 study in Animal Feed Science and Technology found that pastured eggs had higher omega-3s and vitamin E than eggs from caged hens. A 1999 study by Barb Gorski at Pennsylvania State University found that eggs from pastured birds had 10 percent less fat, 34 percent less cholesterol, 40 percent more vitamin A, and four times the omega-3s compared to the standard USDA data. Her study also tested pastured chicken meat, and found it to have 21 percent less fat, 30 percent less saturated fat and 50 percent more vitamin A than the USDA standard. In 2003, Heather Karsten at Pennsylvania State University compared eggs from two groups of Hy-Line variety hens, with
one kept in standard crowded factory farm conditions and the other on mixed grass and legume pasture. The eggs had similar levels of fat and cholesterol, but the pastured eggs had three times more omega-3s, 220 percent more vitamin E and 62 percent more vitamin A than eggs from caged hens. The 2005 study Mother Earth News conducted of four heritage-breed pastured flocks in Kansas found that pastured eggs had roughly half the cholesterol, 50 percent more vitamin E, and three times more beta carotene. Dangerous Additives in Pet Food
ecent events have opened our eyes to the realities of potentially damaging and dangerous commercial pet foods. The pet food recalls have spotlighted problems with Chinese wheat gluten contaminated with plastic melamine and grains high in molds containing aflatoxins. But what about the ingredients that haven’t been spotlighted? One such ingredient is tetra sodium pyrophosphate used as a thickening agent and emulsifier in canned foods such as Purina’s Friskies. The HAZARDS OVERVIEW for TSPP (http://www.
jtbaker.com/msds/englishhtml/s4826. htm) cautions that: “Chronic ingestion or inhalation may induce systemic phosphorous poisoning. Liver damage, kidney damage, jaw/tooth abnormalities, blood disorders and cardiovascular effects can result.” Wouldn’t you say that feeding our animals such items daily would be considered “chronic ingestion”? Devil’s Claw Continued from page 35.
Conclusion:
What side effects are associated with use of Devil’s Claw?
Although Devil’s Claw has been suggested for many conditions, the best evidence supports its use for the treatment of osteoarthritis and low back pain. It provides a safer alternative to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which have numerous long-term side effects. Most important, Devil’s Claw extract has been shown to provide pain relief equal to or better than traditional over-thecounter and prescription pain relievers in numerous long-term, human clinical studies, with no serious side effects.
No evidence of toxicity was seen in the German study of Devil’s Claw at doses many times higher than recommended. A 6-month open study in the United Kingdom of 630 people with arthritis showed no side effects other than occasional mild gastrointestinal distress. Compared to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which have major side effects including internal bleeding, liver damage, and kidney damage, Devil’s Claw has been shown repeatedly to have minimal side effects.

What to look for in a reliable Devil’s Claw product: A reliable Devil’s Claw extract product should be correctly standardized and properly extracted to supply the active ingredient harpagoside. If the label doesn’t mention harpagoside, the product has not been standardized. For best results, look for a Devil’s Claw extract product standardized to contain at least 3% harpagoside.

Making Childbirth Easier Childbirth Education Classes: The Benefits for You By Chris Marlo
Considering skipping childbirth classes? Every couple will gain something from taking a good childbirth class. Some of the benefits include: Think again! If you are having your first child it is easy to feel overwhelmed 1. The opportunity to spend time with other expectant couples by questions and fears, and just not knowing what to expect – before, during and after the big event! Many new parents find that birthing classes really help to ease their worries and answer their questions. The common goal of all birthing classes is to provide you with the confidence you need to give birth and to make informed decisions during the process. Typically new parents take birthing classes around the 3rd trimester of pregnancy when the mother is about 7 months pregnant. The type of class that’s right for you depends on your personality and beliefs as well as those of your labor partner. There is no one correct method. (www.kids health.org)

and to share pregnancy experiences;
2. Increased involvement of the father in the pregnancy; 3. A weekly chance to ask questions; 4. Hands-on instruction in breathing, relaxation and coaching techniques;
5. A chance to learn coping strategies that may help reduce
your perception of pain and result in a slightly shorter labor. Studies show that the average labor of women who have had a childbirth education is slightly shorter than that of women who haven’t.
KIDScorner (What to Expect When You Are Expecting, Eisenberg, Murkoff, Hathaway) In today’s high tech world, childbirth education provides more than basic knowledge and skills. The most valuable childbirth classes will help women understand the possible negative influence of technology on the birthing process and will equip them with information and strategies to minimize unnecessary interventions. (The Official Lamaze Guide, Lothian and DeVries) The parent education movement began in the 1950’s in response to observations by health care providers in obstetrics that women in labor were often frightened and unprepared. This fear lead to increased physical tension, more pain and complications during delivery. Methods were developed over time to enhance relaxation, reduce stress and increase preparedness by education and increased comfort measures. Today prepared childbirth classes are recommended for all families by caregivers and the federally appointed panel on prenatal care. Studies show that childbirth education promotes positive attitudes toward labor and delivery, and fosters early maternal-infant attachment. (Maternity and Women’s Health, Lowder, Perry and Bobak) Many individuals facing parenthood have little information about what to expect and do not have the skills necessary to deal effectively with pregnancy, childbirth or parenthood. Childbirth education can fill this void. Childbirth classes not only prepare couples for birthing and parenting, but also promote wellbeing and increased intimacy in couples. Therapeutic effects include improved health behaviors and an increased sense of confidence to cope with birth at the end of the classes. (ICEA Journal, Humenick 2004).

MEDITATION&reflection
Add Value To Your Life Through Meditation By Ace Remas
A
valuable life is a worthy life, one with meaning and purpose. We all seek this. It may be in the joy of our relationships, in the pleasure of our activities and work, or in meeting the creative and physical challenges of our life. As we seek meaning and purpose, we of course encounter obstacles and distractions. We may lose our purpose, or even feel we can’t find it. We may get tired, discouraged, or afraid. Others may appear to block our purpose, and conditions such as money, jobs, even the weather, can obstruct our good intentions. It is difficult to pursue our passions without meditation. Meditation is that part of your day that can be the remembering, re-energizing, recuperating, or reaffirming you secretly seek in all your days. By using meditation to reflect on yourself, your relationships, and the conditions of your life, you are empowered by your insights. In actuality, what meditation brings is a calm mind, which then has a clearer vision of your wishes and the obstacles to them. With this clear vision, it is easier to know what to do. Conversely, the lack of purpose you may experience arises from the agitated state of mind that results from living without moments of reflection. Many people believe meditation is doing nothing because the body appears inactive. Even a calm mind sometimes is viewed as an absence of definitive action. But in truth exactly the opposite is true. Just doing something, feeling satisfied temporarily with the activity, often is avoiding the main issue of really deciding to do something. Really doing is sitting down, reflecting on the actual essence of your life, and then arising from that experience with confidence and determination.

OB/GY N Dr. Dennis delivers 98% of his own patients’ babies.
Here’s a very simple but profound meditation you can use to start. Find a quiet place to sit comfortably, undisturbed by others or noises such as television or radio. Give yourself at least 15 minutes alone like this, longer if you have the time. Sit with your back erect, your chin parallel to the floor, not too high or too low. Lightly close the eyes to reduce distractions. Rest the hands in the lap, the right hand in the palm of the left with the thumbs touching lightly. Focus your attention on the body to relax any tension you may find. As you relax, you become aware of your breath. Gently shift your attention to the breath. Concentrate on the breath, breathing in and breathing out. Enjoy it for a few moments.

When you feel calm and collected, bring to mind your good intention to live a meaningful life. Think of the people in your life and your love and affection for them. Think of the worthiness of your intentions to work diligently to give yourself and those you love the resources for a comfortable, safe life. Remember how fortunate you are to have these moments and this opportunity, and come to the gentle conclusion that indeed you are very fortunate. Tell yourself in meditation “I am very fortunate.” When some feeling arises because of this thought, meditate single-pointedly on that positive feeling for as long as you wish. If your mind wanders, just begin again. When you have finished, briefly reflect on your conclusions, and dedicate your good intention to the benefit of the people in your life. As the day unfolds, come back to that feeling of good fortune again and again as you are able. If you have the time, you can meditate more than once a day. The next morning repeat this meditation process. Over time with this small effort you will find your mind gradually transformed from distracted or agitated, to calm and collected. Naturally and effortlessly, you’ll realize your purpose as it emerges from the context of your life.

Natural Radiance Brush Your Skin Continued from page 34. According to Sheff, do-it-yourself dry brushing should follow certain rules: • Always brush toward the heart and with long strokes.
Ayurveda History & Philosophy
• Avoid tender areas where skin is thin and delicate, such as the face and nipples, and any irritated or cut skin. • Start with the tops of the feet and brush the front and back of the leg up to the hip. At the belly, brush in a counter-clockwise motion, ending at the heart level. • Next brush from the tops of the fingers up the arm and shoulder to the heart. • Reach to the back (that long handle helps) and brush from the buttocks up the back and around to the belly. For the full punch, follow up with a shower, varying the water temperature: cold, then warm, then cold again. The temperature shifts jump-start circulation and the elimination of toxins. In addition to its other attributes, Sheff says dry brushing keeps skin looking young and beautiful. “It rids the skin of dead cells and gently keeps skin moist and hydrated.” And the result, she says, is radiance. “Your skin glows.” Courtesy of Alternative Medicine http://www.alternativemedicine.com

Simplifying the Complex:
What is Craniosacral Therapy? By PJ Juhrend, PT
Believe it or not, your skull is made up of bones which actually move! At the top of the spine is the skull. The skull, the face, and the jaw make up the ‘cranium’ while a triangular-shaped bone, the ‘sacrum’, is located at the other-end of the spine. The spinal column connects these two and houses the spinal cord. Within and surrounding the brain is an intricate membrane and pressure-regulated system containing Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF). The CSF flows between the cranium and the sacrum and bathes the brain and spinal cord. These elements compose the complex Craniosacral System. Imbalance and restrictions within the system can easily be detected and treated using a highly-skilled technique called Craniosacral Therapy (CST).
Background Dr. William Sutherland, DO is credited for explaining how the production and flow of CSF produces a palpable craniosacral rhythm. The rhythm results from the minute, normal changes in fluid production and absorption. Sutherland’s Principle explains how such volumepressure changes (described as an expansion and contraction) can be felt at the cranium (the bones of the skull) and even throughout the body by a speciallytrained therapist. While conducting extensive research and seeking to support the fact that the body has an inherent capacity to heal, Sutherland believed that the craniosacral system could somehow be used in treatment. If structural barriers could be removed, the body’s normal self-correcting capability could be restored. As such,
CST frees membrane restrictions and normalizes the rate and amplitude of the craniosacral rhythm. In 1970, Dr. John Upledger, DO viewed the rhythmic movement of the craniosacral system while observing spinal surgery. Knowledgeable of Sutherland’s principle, he followed his observations and developed specific manual therapy techniques used to treat the system. Today, Florida’s Upledger Institute conducts research, education, and treatment for many who need this type of therapy. Most likely, therapists with CST expertise have been trained by the Upledger Institute. In 1978, a highly-respected microbiologist, Rene Dubos agreed with Sutherland stating, “The future of health care is in the treatment of patients rather than diseases and pathogens are not the cause of disease but rather the result of [bodily] systems failure; failed systems produce less than optimal function and varying conditions of dis-ease.”

People likely to respond to CST are those with headaches, back pain, fibromyalgia, head trauma, dizziness, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and those following viral or bacterial infection. Treatment consists of a gentle, hands-on technique necessary to correct rhythm imbalance and resolve restriction. Those who experience CST most often feel ‘more in balance’, ‘not-so-out-of-sorts’, more energized and with reduced pain. This simple yet complex therapy helps restore optimal health, normalize structure, and aids in the return of blood flow and nerve conduction.
